Sonic Generations: the 2011 masterpiece that was my best friend growing up. Well, second best, after my imaginary friend Rupert. Rupert and I loved to watch Family Guy on FOX, and he would skip all the parts where Peter swears or does naughty dances.
I remember one day I came home from school and I couldn’t stop crying; I was glued to my mattress in a sorry state of decay. That same day, you see, was one of the worst days of my life. I was playing football with George, and he kicked the ball directly into my crotch. It hurt so much that I dropped the racket, and to make it even worse, Michelle saw (and laughed at me and put it on Snapchat). Michelle is my neighbour who I have loved ever since I was a young scamp in the olden days. However, little did I know it would be the only bad day I'd ever have again - all thanks to Sonic Generations.
Whilst weeping my sorrow moans on my Spongebob-embroidered bedsheets, I felt the warmth of a few lumens scintillating across my damp face. I was bewildered; “What could this sensation be?”, I asked myself. Insidiously, I loosened my iron-tight eyelids to allow the embrace of vision to hug me once again. It was my Xbox 360. I never thought i’d see it again - at least not powered on. This is because my evil stepmother said I wasn’t allowed electronics for a week last tuesday, due to my failure of the FitnessGram Pacer Test. In this test, I forgot to tie my shoelaces and fell over on the first lap: earning my humiliation and, once again, featuring on Michelle’s (who i love and was my neighbour) snapchat story once again.
What is more strange than this long-lost friend of an Xbox reanimating itself, is that the screen gently turned into a blue, as mysterious as the innocuous depths of the bottomless ocean. Hurriedly, I put on my glasses - as there was no way I was wearing them voluntarily. I had to see what bizarre aqueous visage was on the screen.
It was Sonic Generations.
I recognised that familiar blue rat anywhere. Rupert and I used to draw fanart of him and we watched sammyclassicsonicfan every day of our lives on Youtube. Could this be the friend I was looking for, who would turn all the clouds into rays of enlightening sun? It was.
But there was something different about Sonic - something a bit more classical. He retained his older look, which I found attractive. He promptly slid up the power-rankings and was now 2nd place, behind my sexy neighbour Michelle. Classic Sonic from Sonic Generations video game approached me from the backlit screen of my Playstation Vita and said to me, in a deific voice: “Thomas, you must not be afraid. No more shall Harry strike you in the nether-regions with a football. I am here now, and we will be friends forever”.
I was aghast with delight. As if from the heavens, Classic Sonic from Sonic Generations video game had possessed my Nintendo Switch and divinely blessed my life with his friendship.
Ever since that day, I have never feared the oncoming darkness in life. My wife Michelle and her boyfriend have been great additions to my life - and it’s all thanks to Classic Sonic from Sonic Generations. He has guided me to great heights in life, as I have attained jobs at both McDonalds AND Discord - where I work as a moderator. Without this video game illuminating my life, I never would have escaped the shackles of my Spongebob bed sheets, and I certainly wouldn’t be the sink-fixer I am today. Thank you, Classic Sonic. And thank you, Sonic Generations.

The problem with Future Sonic is that his stages are actually pretty good with fast paced action, freedom of movement like you'd get in SA2. What happens is that during the stage the game forces you to play on a 2D plane like you would with Classic Sonic. Not only are the 2D parts terrible it breaks the mental flow that you would retain when doing the high speed segments, having to force the player to context switch all time is bad game design. Besides that, the 2D sections for Future Sonic is abysmal, where the entire game inherits the same aweful floaty control handling from its predecessors, for example you'd expect to land on a platform on the exact spot but because Sonic's shoes are made of butter you will slide off even though you didn't move the analog stick, same goes for Classic Sonic.
It was a blast to run City Escape again despite the awful 2D sections, however Rooftop Run and Planet Wisp were creative but to actually play through them was a convoluted nightmare.
The stages where you have to navigate through water is cancer, underwater gameplay was never good, has never been good, so is the case here.
Was the Casino Night DLC a joke? Because the pinball machine and slots didn't add much if anything at all to the game.
The last boss was a huge dissapointment because the previous boss with the Egg Dragoon was amazingly well done, but going into the last boss I was very dissapointed because all I did was press the A button to boost, dodge projectiles, that's it. The last boss was trash.
If the developers stuck to pure 3D instead of flipping back and forth between 3D to 2D to 3D, I would have had better praise for this game.

This Game Is Proof Sonic Team Doesn't Know What The Hell Else To Do With Sonic
This is the only good sonic game I've played since Colors and that was a long ass time ago. It's really good, but everything good about it is due to it living through its predecessors. It does nothing of its own except for arguably one of the worst final bosses in the series history. The only part they had to figure out from scratch was that and they couldn't even do that. I'm not excited for sonic frontiers either. I'm scared lol.
Anyway the game is really good. Optimized like complete dog crap though. You'll run into lag and micro freezes no matter what kind of machine you've got and I know because I'm one of those guys who's got a very expensive rig. The controls work without issue but if you previously set up your controls to work with SA2 you're going to need to undo all of that for it to work. All in all I'm glad I took this long to play this game because I was craving sonic and there hasn't been anything good in a looooong while. This should buy me some time until Sonic Team figures out how to make a good game again.

Personal Review:
This is the game that perfected the boost formula in Sonic, however in comparison to the rest of the boost games it comes by short. It's levels are for the most part well made, however the worst part about them is Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic on his own when he is in a fully 3D area and it's all platforming and boosting it is amazing, such as one of it's late game zones' Sea Side Hill Act 2, however he still has 2D sections despite Classic Sonic being a thing and therefore giving over fully 3D stages to Modern Sonic would've been obvious but they didn't do this. Despite how good the game overall is in comparison to the rest of the games in the franchise, you can tell that it was rushed. There is pretty much no story, Sonic has a supise birthday party then a black dimension time thing comes by and takes all his friends and wipes out all color of the world. That's basically most of the story summed up. The music is amazing as always, it's kind of hard to mess that up in a Sonic game, nearly every old song from Sonic is remixed in a catchy way and it's overall fun to listen to it. The graphics are good, they go for a pseudo realistic style with Sonic characters put into it. The graphics aren't as good as Sonic Unleashed but they are still amazing non the less. The gameplay is nearly perfect the way Modern Sonic controls is the best he's ever felt, with his trick system and his drifting and improved boost, Classic Sonic on the other hand isn't really Sonic from his old games, he's slow overall and doesn't rely on momentum, the thing that keeps him going fast is an overpowered spindash which is fun to pull off at high speeds. Both styles are good but the best one out of them is Modern Sonic. After beating the main levels you get the choice of choosing 3 side missions to be able to progress to the boss and the next 3 levels to appear. The missions aren't terrible but you can tell that this was all filler content because Sega knew the game would be too short. Out of all missions on each 3 different eras there's always like 4 of them that are complete garbage to do, if you're going for full S rank DO NOT DO THESE STAGES, it does not count for any achievements and overall you will get frustrated trying to perfect them as some of these are really bad designed, I S ranked every stage and got all achievements for this game and it's not worth it, the side missions should just be completed once however you enjoy doing them and whatever rank you get stick with it. The game is again super short, if I were to replay the game right now knowing everything I'm doing in total the game would be 1 hour long, maybe 2 hours long. It's a fun game despite it's mishaps and overall it's worth buying, but you should just get it on sale, that's what I did, it costed just $1, and for a dollar it is hella worth it, it comes with its soundtrack and its DLC included, the DLC isn't good mind you but it's still cool to have. Overall it's a solid 8/10, the base game that is, with mods this game is a beast, 10/10 instantly, this game is carried by its own modders. The fact that half a game (Sonic Unleashed's day stages) is fully playable in a completely different game is astonishing, this game's modding community is amazing. All in all, it's worth the buy, even if it isn't on sale although I strongly recommend to wait for one, and it's fun even if it has no story, all that matters at the end is that a game is fun to play and this game goes above and beyond.

Now to give you an outright score, it would be a 7/10. Pretty fun game. But I want to go more in-depth.
As You know this game has 2 playable characters, Modern boost Sonic and Classic sonic. The level design of the main stages is very fun (80 percent of the time) but I have some issues with it. Modern sonic controls absolutely terrible when he doesn't have high speed. Standard 3d platforming with him can be inconsistent and frustrating (his 2d sections don't control bad tho). The levels are mostly designed with his speed in mind but when you want to slow down and explore for a little bit to get some collectibles it can be annoying as his controls are very slippery so this discourages you on exploring the level. But as I said before these sections only make up like 20 percent of his levels so it's not that big of a deal when the other 80 percent is absolute perfection. And oh boy the art design and graphics of this game is gorgeous and still holds up to this day.
I legit could not believe how beautiful some of these stages were.
Now to classic Sonic. Is He fun? well, yes and no. On their own the classic stages are pretty neat and enjoyable (even tho I would have made more use of momentum based physics in his sections if I was the developer, but oh well)
The problem is the modern stages are very fast and exhilarating and the classic stages slow down the pace of the game by a LOT so when modern fans play the classic stages they might not like the differences and the opposite can be said about classic fans playing the modern stages. These 2 completely different styles of gameplay do not fit together. Sonic team has made this mistake a hundred times like in SA, SA2, Unleashed and more. I personally think this is the biggest problem with this game.
I can go more about the upgrades, skills, side levels and etc (that are also good I should add). But this game is still great and I want everyone to have a blind first experience so I won't spoil much more.

A message/question to Sega:
I have a question (and I don't know where to ask).
Could you please release your older games (Virtua Fighter 1,2,3,4,5; Outrun; Skies of Arcadia; ...) and your new games (Sonic Colors Ultimate, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, ...) to Steam? I'm looking foward to play those games. ^^

Then you have maybe the second best iteration of Modern Sonic in terms of smoothness, animation, and overall coolness. The earlier Sonic Unleashed definitely had a cooler, more well animated Sonic than Sonic Generations, and Sonic Unleashed also arguably has a better story and level design for Modern Sonic,
Unfortunately, despite the gorgeous game animation, Sonic Unleashed was marred by the clunky and repetitive experience of playing Werehog missions. Some people enjoyed the Werehog, most didn't. Getting to play as Classic Sonic in this game so much better.
Overall, the best iteration of Classic Sonic coupled with the second-best iteration of Modern Sonic makes Sonic Generations an amazing game to play.

Let’s start with the game-play. The game frequently touts that both modern and classic Sonic are both playable characters. Classic Sonic plays how one would expect; 2D platforming along the lines of the original 2D Sonic games. Modern Sonic’s game-play follows the ‘boost’ formula from Unleashed and Colors: a mix between 3D running segments and 2D platforming/running sections. I’d estimate the game-play is 33% 3D and 66% 2D for modern Sonic. Unfortunately, this means that the 3D Sonic game-play from the Adventure era is not present. In my opinion, the 2D sections of Modern Sonic end up feeling too much like Classic Sonic's.
There are stages featured from many of Sonic’s games, featuring remixes of their original themes. Classic Sonic’s music is electronic while Modern Sonic mostly focuses around electric guitars. While the stages are a fun nostalgia trip, they're clearly chosen as fan favorites, rather than a smooth progression. Two of the final levels: Spagonia and Planet Wisp don’t thematically feel like ‘final’ stages, despite their higher difficulty. Speaking of theme, let’s briefly touch on the story.
Oh my bad, there is no story. There’s a thread-bare plot to provide context, but that’s about it. Throughout the game you save Sonic’s friends such as Knuckles, Amy, etc. And all they do for the whole game is stand around in the overworld. They make cameo appearances in the finale to give Sonic moral support (not that he needs it because he’s cocky af). This is a game celebrating Sonic... and no one else tbh. There are many attempts through the game to be funny, but most of it doesn't work for me. I likely enjoyed the jokes more when I played this as a kid.
This game can be beaten rather quickly (under 10 hours unless you’re really bad at this game), so let’s talk about replayability. Each stage has multiple paths; while the higher ones are typically shortcuts, you’ll generally miss these paths the first time you play each level. Part of the game's replayability is improving at these levels to beat them quicker and quicker (and reach S rank). These additional paths also tend to hide the red star rings: hidden collectibles that unlock various concept art, music, etc. More unlockables are earned through challenges, which revolve around gimmicks such as only having one ring, or needing to use a partner (AKA hit the Y button) to get around certain obstacles. They either section off parts of the main stages, or use a simple custom stage with existing assets. While they can be fun diversions, they won’t do much to keep you coming back, IMO. The unlockables I enjoy most are the music, which can selected before playing any level (including bosses). So if you don't like a certain stage's theme, just swap it out with something you like more.
Now some other things to mention:
This game comes with Casino Night DLC, but don’t let the name fool you into thinking it’s a full level. It’s just a pinball minigame.
Perhaps the main saving grace of the game is the plethora of mods available. These include graphical updates, model replacements, level packs, and even voice line replacements if you want to hear older voice lines. Even though the game runs and looks fine vanilla, it’s worth looking into mods even for a first time play-through. I haven't tried out the level pack mods yet, but I assume that they'll help the replay time.
Also, this game is a perfectly fine PC port. There are no optimization issues that I’m aware of.
Conclusion: The moment to moment game-play is a lot of fun, but the game as a whole is a bit short. People who really enjoy the game will get some more entertainment out of from the optional challenges, but many probably won’t. The wide selection of mods gives the game a helpful boost to its lifespan. $20 is a little expensive for this game, even with it being a cheap price for a relatively modern AAA game. This game is by and large meant for Sonic fans, but newcomers will still probably enjoy the gameplay despite the weak story and disjointed levels.

If you're a 90s kid that spent alot of time growing up with all the classics and early 3D Sonic games, this little gem will blow you away with the first few sets of levels, bosses, and challenges. Replayability exists in the form of challenges and earning S ranks with some exploration in the main stages with collecting red emblems. Alot of the experience though is in that first playthrough, it really blows you away.
This game is meant to be played with a controller, trying to play with a keyboard likely takes alot of the enjoyment out of playing the game. Run config tool before starting the game for the very first time. Ran completely fine.

Before I played this recently after years, I hated on generations for so long. I enjoyed it each time I played it before (Even with the horrific 40fps I didn't know how to change), but as a memory I never remembered it clearly, and probably grew to like another Sonic game way more. I was always mad because Unleashed got one of my least favourite stages of the game and CD didn't get a full level. Both didn't have any of the unlockable music among my favourites (Except for one in CD). But it took me long enough to realise and appreciate the diversity between all the levels. I haven't played 3 of the games since they won't ever bring them to steam, so I can't think much about the other levels they had.
Most of all I hated on the characters and lack of involvement they had in the game, along with the story. Now I think that's as good as the characters could fit with the rest of the game, and it's not so bad (Though it could possibly be improved if the rest of the game was.)
Again, I love the game, I want to be able to choose music in time trial mode, and I want a sequel with more great remixed levels and maybe a better story.

First impressions:
I have to bind every button? [controller is highly reccommended]
I looked up a recommended keyboard bind. Did that. Then started playing..
So how is the game?
Game is pretty fun. Levels are dynamic, smooth. You can switch from classic sonic to 3d sonic. Both have different kinds of gameplay but are fun in their own ways. I prefer 3d sonic because of all the cool camera angles and ways I can fly across the map. You really feel fast, and badass.
Story is standard. You don't really play this for the story, you play for the levels.
It's beginner friendly and it never feels like it gets too easy or difficult. Sometimes the little tips the game gives you get a bit repetitive and annoying but it wasn't a big deal.

However, the 2D stages are so good that I don't care, the platforming is tight, the levels are beautiful and the music is just phenomenal. For me, Sonic Generations is worth it for that alone, if you like 3D Sonic too then this is a must play.

1: The level selection is great it chooses the best stages from each mainline Sonic game up to this point, not only is the level selection great and it chooses the best of the best, but the level design is amazing as well! Each stage has a lot of multiple pathways and is very extensive, of course this was to be expected for Classic Sonic, but the Modern Sonic stages are very good as well with good level design, long stages and a lot of different pathways, no playthrough trough one stage feels the same!
2: The music is amazing, almost all the remixed music that is included of the fan favorite Sonic songs are better than the originals, and not only that as unlockables there are lot's of extra music tracks from Sonic's long and extensive history to choose from!
3: The story is this game's biggest downside it's really lackluster and it doesn't have depth at all, that I have to say is the biggest downside of the game.
4: The game is pretty long too with 18 stages in total, 7 different boss fights and I believe around a 100 extra bonus missions to finish, and let me tell you these bonus missions maybe sound tedious but most of them definitely aren't and are a lot of fun extra challenges to complete.
5: Collectible's are super good too, the red rings are definitely worth getting for all the amazing concept art you get from them and the awesome Sonic music.
All in all I highly recommend this Sonic game for anyone who is a fan of platformers as it is truly one of Sonic's best 3D games out there!

Hey Sonic! Enjoy your future, it's gonna be great!
Sonic Generations is 2011 milestone celebration release of the franchise, taking place through renditions of popular stages from each mainline game. Our contemporary Sonic is joined by his younger rendition after a mysterious abomination starts to mess with space-time and threatens to destroy it altogether.
For the technical side of the graphics, it's a late-7th gen console port - 16:9 aspect ratio resolutions past Full HD will work fine, and much of everything looks decent, but taking a moment to look a little closer can show very low quality textures or texture filtering in several places. The art design of the stages, however, is excellent; they're remixed for both Classic and Modern gameplay, yet remain faithful to the source material throughout.
The less the supporting cast of characters talk, the better. I believe their problem isn't so much their presence, but their obnoxiousness, with many repeat voice lines especially in the longer final boss battle, where they all cheer for you and warn how THAT LOOKS LIKE A HOMING SHOT - but Eggman gets a pass because he's always entertaining to listen to. The sound effect palette and jingles are a little limited, and the latter is more obviously inspired by, if not straight up lifted from past games in the series. And yet, at the expense of being predictable, the music is fantastic - not just by being plain good videogame music, but in each stage having remixed versions of the original game's tracks for Classic or Modern gameplay.
The two parts of the basic gameplay are represented by Classic and Modern Sonic. Classic attempts to emulate the controls and feel of the old Genesis titles, but the attempt doesn't go too far, as he's very rigid and somewhat unsatisfying in jumping, doesn't respond to momentum as expected (or in later stages, respond well at all to slopes), and is generally slower to respond and react than I'd fancy. Not helping is the exclusively 2.5D side-on perspective of his stages, which still have the age-old problem of not showing enough of where in the hell you're running towards, unless you've practiced the given stage to near perfection.
Modern is, personally, much tighter. He revolves around managing a replenishable resource of boost to catapult to top speed and plow through enemies and obstacles through rollercoaster stages. It's more engaging than it sounds, as it's a major test of your reflexes and map knowledge - and this time, you can bloody see what's ahead of you half the time. While the fully 3D boosting segments are rightfully criticized for being too simple, the 2.5D Modern segments fall straight back into the no-man's-land of Classic gameplay - the only saving grace is the expanded moveset and maintained sharper controls of Modern.
Each main stage is playable in Classic or Modern, and one must appreciate the effort that went into translating the themes, visuals, setpieces and gimmicks from the old games into Generations' format - certain stage elements are even further inspired by additional stages from the old games, such that Sky Sanctuary has bits of Marble Garden and Hidden Palace. Even if they're clearable in below 4 minutes on average, each romp through the stages feels fresh and engaging enough on its own to warrant repeat playthroughs, which would almost make up for Classic's shortcomings... almost. It's a shame that each game represented is limited to just one stage featured in Generations - a thorough milestone celebration with multiple levels from each game would be absolutely sweet.
In addition to the remastered dual-gameplay stages, completing each of the Classic, Dreamcast and Modern level set unlocks challenge gates, and completing just one out of some 10 per stage is required to progress to the main bosses; completing additional stages unlocks extra skills for Classic or Modern Sonic, as well as artwork and music in the in-game gallery. Rival battles make a return as well, with the same remixing treatment as the regular stages.
All in all, this adds up to around 3-4 hours of playtime until victory, if playing at a moderate pace and without hunting for collectibles or extra content. It's a recommendation from me, because beyond my criticism thus far, Sonic Generations is simply a well polished and largely focused Sonic experience.

Even if you aren't planning on beating your old times, the levels are still fun to replay from time to time.
The game does have some flaws, though. The final boss is bad, the game's story is forgettable and the main campaign is short, but the game is otherwise incredible and absolutely worth full-price.
