Teil.

I look up to Shadow the Hedgehog as a hero, I think he made this game great. When I look into his red eyes I remember the spaghetti my mother used to make me.

Oh yeah!
Rolling around at the speed of sound
Got places to go
Gotta follow my rainbow

Guess what lies ahead
Only one way to find out
Must keep on movin' ahead
No time for guessin', follow my plan instead

not perfect, lots of things got rough with time, but god isnt it just fun and satisfying. except the treasure hunting in later stages everything else is just plain fun, with sonic and shadow levels being so good making me replay them a lot. music slaps, not only does it fit the environment and level, it fits the current ongoing story events (be it green forest and white jungle as the best examples). the story and characters were crafted with such a care, thats absolutely absent in current sonic games.
adventure 2 may not be my best sonic game, but i do hold it probably the closest to my heart.

But if we talk about it publicly, we are ostracized. Remember when Glenn Beck was kicked off Fox News? That’s because of his segment on why Sonic is better than Mario. So we try to keep quiet about our love of Sonic. But one of my favorite pastimes is to collect rare and obscure Sonic games. I own at least three Sonic pachinko machines and even own a signed copy of Sonic Dreams Collection.
I will often go to flea markets or garage sales looking for vintage Sonic games and other merchandise. I have spent approximately sixty five thousand dollars on Sonic media, including a very expensive commission of a drawing of me hanging out with Sonic and Knuckles at Six Flags. But that was far from the biggest price I ever paid for Sonic. No. That day came just a few weeks ago when my wife, who is a doctor by the way, and I walked into a Gamestop.
The building itself was decrepit and disgusting. The lights flickered grimly, and half the shelves were basked in darkness. The whole place reeked of body odor. There was a sullen look of despair on the face of every single person there. There was truly a depressing presence hanging over every inch of that place. In other words, it looked like a perfectly ordinary looking Gamestop. But it wasn’t. This Gamestop housed a truly eldritch horror that I was unknowingly about to welcome into my life.
There was, of course, the standard affair of PlayStation and Xbox games. Nothing too exciting. I had no interest in Red Dead Redemption 2 or Sekiro, Shadows Die Twice. I have no interest in normie trash like that. Eventually, a display case in a dark corner of the store caught my eye. Now we are talking. My wife, Dr. Shapiro, and I sauntered over to the counter for a closer look. There were some random Gameboy and PlayStation games. But what really surprised me was a CD with the words Sonic Adventure 2 written on it in black sharpie.
The Gamestop clerk walked over to us.
“Is there anything I can help you with?” she asked, her horrible breath wafting into my face.
“Yes,” I said. “What is the deal with this copy of Sonic Adventure 2?”
The woman scratched her head. “If I remember correctly, some crazy lunatic brought that game in. He said it was haunted.”
“Really?” I asked.
She replied. “Look, I don’t fucking know. Now do you want it or not?”
“I’ll take it!” I exclaimed. My wife paid for the game and we quickly exited the store. On the way home, I explained to my wife that Sonic Adventure 2 for the Sega Dreamcast is far superior to the Nintendo GameCube port. The GameCube port was horribly butchered. You would think the port was done by Democrats. Yes, it’s that bad. When we finally got home, I dusted off my old Sega to give my new game a try.
The game started up perfectly normally. I breezed through the main menu and went to story mode. Hero and Dark story were both already available as usual. But I noticed another story. Hell story. I could not recall there being a Hell story when I first played Sonic Adventure 2. So that seemed a little odd. But I was too excited to play some Sonic to think about it for very long. I selected Hero story and was presented with the opening cutscene of Sonic jumping out of a helicopter.
The first level City Escape started up and I felt a rush of excitement. My only complaint with this level is the lack of homeless people scattered throughout the streets. This is clearly supposed to be San Fancisco, and we all know that liberal run cities are a hotbed of homelessness and poverty. No wonder Sonic is trying to escape from the city. Because liberal run cities are awful and I hate them.
It had been a while since I played Sonic Adventure 2, but had little trouble handling the blue blur. I guess you could say I am a bit of a professional gamer. I quickly made it to the chase sequence with the semi truck. But I noticed that there appeared to be realistic human screaming whenever the truck ran over the cars on the sides of the road. It sounded a lot like how some people scream when I own them with facts and logic.
Sonic was then cornered by a GUN agent inside a robot called Big Foot. But every time Sonic hit the cockpit, the pilot would scream out in pain and call for his family. Once I defeated him, the robot exploded and realistic chunks of blood and guts rained down over the battlefield. I didn’t remember any of this from previous playthroughs, but sometimes even extremely smart Harvard graduates like me forget one or two things.
Then my favorite Sonic the Hedgehog character appeared. Shadow the Hedgehog. I was so excited that my voice almost raised by half a decibel. I know all the words to this scene so well that I was mouthing along with the characters. Except there was one problem.
Shadow is supposed to say “My name is Shadow. I'm the world's ultimate life form! There's no time for games. Farewell.” Instead he said this. “My name is Shadow, and your days are numbered, Ben Shapiro.”
I have been threatened at least sixty times in my life, but never by a cartoon hedgehog. Needless to say, this was quite unusual. Is it possible that the big tiddy goth girl who worked at Gamestop was telling the truth? Was there some kind of evil force locked away inside the disc spinning around inside my Dreamcast? Or maybe that half a Bud Light I drank was really getting to me. I decided to keep a level head and push onward.
The next few levels went by without too much trouble. I’ve always been a fan of the Knuckles and Tails levels. I have watched a lot of YouTube videos of people saying these levels are not as good. But those people are morons. You heard me, morons. Anyway, I made it to the scene where Amy breaks Sonic out of Guantanamo Bay. I love this scene. Sonamy is easily my favorite ship. They have such great chemistry.
Seriously, do not try to tell me that Sonic belongs with Sally Acorn, or Princess Elise, or Big the Cat. Amy is his one true love. I’m sorry, but hedgehog marriage should be between a hedgehog and a hedgehog. Otherwise, the entire society of Mobius would collapse. I have done quite a bit of research on this so do not even bother trying to debate me in the threads.
Getting back to the game. I noticed something a little strange during the Guantanamo Bay cut scene. In the jail cell are copious amounts of notes written by Gerald Robotnik. But I noticed a different note sprawled along the wall in hyper realistic blood. It said “I’m coming for you Ben Shapiro.” I had no idea what to make of this. Was this some kind of visual glitch? Sonic Adventure 2 is a pretty old game, after all.
It was at this point that I was getting very tired. I had a busy day of talking about how all people on Medicaid are freeloaders ahead of me and I needed my beauty rest. I turned off the Dreamcast, got up to stretch and made my way for the bathroom until I heard a faint whisper. A faint whisper that shook me to my very core. It said “Hey I’ll play with you some other time!”
And it almost sounded like Sonic. It sounded somewhat like Ryan Drummond, but there was a hint of Jaleel White. Maybe a touch of Jason Griffith and a splash of Roger Craig Smith. Also there was some Martin Burke and Ben Schwartz too, as well as Jaleel White. I immediately wet myself. Possibly out of fear, or possibly because I have poor control of my bladder, or possibly both.
I put on my jammies and hopped into bed with Doctor Shapiro, who is also my wife by the way. I tossed and turned for several hours. Sleep eluded me. My mind was racing with thoughts about what had just happened.

THE FINALHAZARD
--------------------------------------
THE PROTOTYPE OF THE ULTIMATE LIFE
Can you feel life moving through your mind
Looks like it came back for more - yeah
Can you feel time slipping down your spine
You try and try to ignore, yeah
But you can hardly swallow
Your fears and pain
When you can't help but follow
It puts you right back where you came
Live and learn
Hangin' on to the edge of tomorrow
Live and learn
From the works of yesterday
Live and learn
If you beg or if you borrow
Live and learn
You may never find your way
Can you feel life tangle you up inside (yeah!)
And now your face down on the floor, oh
But you can't save your sorrow
You've paid in trade
When you can't help but follow
It puts you right back where you came
Live and learn
Hangin' on to the edge of tomorrow
Live and learn
From the works of yesterday
Live and learn
If you beg or if you borrow
Live and learn
You may never find your way
There's a face searching far, so far and wide
There's a place where you dreamed you'd never find
Hold on to what if...
Hold on to what if...
Live and learn
Hangin' on to the edge of tomorrow
Live and learn
From the works of yesterday
Live and learn
If you beg or if you borrow
Live and learn
You may never find your way
Live and learn
Hangin' on to the edge of tomorrow
Live and learn
From the works of yesterday
Live and learn
If you beg or if you borrow
Live and learn
You may never find your way
Live and learn
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Live and learn
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Second time in 2009. Damn, what a great game.
And here we are in 2021. This still rocks.
See ya in a decade or so, and if it'll still hold up when I'm an old grumpy fart - this'll be a true testament to its legacy.
10/10, live and learn, hanging on the edge of tomorrow, live and learn from the works of yesterday.

The worst thing i found about this game was the Mech Stages. Not only do they control horrible, but at some points i really felt like they were just spamming enemys to make the level even more frustrating then it already is. This is aspecially aparent in the Final Story, where those 2 levels with Eggman and Tails were just- i don't know how to describe them they are so bad. Those made me rage the most. I amlost stopped playing because it had so many unfair deaths. Speaking about unfair deaths, the camera makes it impossible to play the Mech stages. Not only do they control bad but the camera makes it even worse. I had so many times falling into pits just because the camera wouldn't allow me to see anything. The Health mechanic sometimes is usefull but most of the time it's just gonna prevent you from doing any progress since you keep on dying. I thought that the main point of rings was that as long as you had one you were save? Aparently not. It throws everything out of the window and i can't describe how much i hate them.
Now for the good.
The game's Speed levels are absolutely incredible. They look beautifull even if their Polygons make them look very blocky, but most of the time i would just get a hold and look at the sceenery. Obiously that is not even touching the tip of the iceberg. It is an absolute blast finding secret shortcuts, and even if it only saves you a couple secounds, you nonetheless feel so incredibly good if you pull it off. It makes you feel like a speedrunner, despite not actually having done something really incredible. You would get rewarded for searching trough the areas. If you would go: Wait what if i use this power up here, then you would get rewarded for thinking it out wich really wants people to play again and see what they can do with their recently obtained power ups. Some of the Time limit mechanics can be very tideos, but it makes you feel like you're in stress, wich just adds to the experiance since you feel so glad when you then beat the stage.
Honestly i think the treasure hunting stages aren't too bad, exept for the later ones with time limits and such. I don't really have to say alot but it's fun to explore.
The chao garden is... well the chao garden. It's really fun to just replay levels over and over to get rings and little animals to give the chao his looks. I Currently am trying to make a Sonic chao, and it already is tons of fun. I don't really have alot of experiance with it, since i am not that kind of person to spend days just on the garden. Tho it is one of the reasons why i picked this game up.
So do i recommend this game?
If you are a Sonic fan who already played some of the games, Hell yeah!!!
However.. if you are a newcomer to the franchise, you may wanna start out with the more easy games. Sonic forces is a good example: It's short and easy. After that (or any sonic game really) you could try this one. But even i, a person that was fan of the blue blur ever since my childhood sometimes have difficulties playing the level. So, yes this is a fun game.
Sorry for the terrible Grammar. I Am german and don't quite got the drill.

Some twenty years later then I get round to SA2 and find...yup, it's pretty much exactly as I thought. Buried under an awful camera and similarly horrible camera controls, precision platforming that is unruly and some hilariously abysmal writing there are nuggets of enjoyment. Every so often the game just settles down and lets you mess about without being scared that a jump you know you have to make that should connect with a platform you're aiming at will inexplicably miss and send you into a bottomless void. To say the game is dated is a bit of an understatement, too. It's not that I'm finding it impossible to judge it on the merits of what it would have been like at the time, but that because I am I have no excuses for it; 3D camera positioning and control was still being honed in for sure, but it had largely been satisfied and the least said about the writing the better, even if it is oftentimes humorous for all the wrong reasons.
Recommending SA2 is incredibly difficult with the numerous later 3D Sonics available. Taking Generations as an example, where it has a different mentality to level design that is often better but rarely not quite as expansive and daring, mechanically it feels so much more confident with what it's doing and controlling Sonic is a joy, even at high speeds. Even Lost Worlds, a messy game of its own, controlling Sonic still feels comfortable and lets you pull off some neat moves pending the level design. SA2 glances in the direction of those moments where you can pull off cool moves having strung together a series of smart jumps, but by the time you get to enjoy these moments you're off searching for emeralds in pace killing treasure hunting levels or driving a walker through an incredibly linear and narrow path as the tone for your missile lock-on becomes instantly overbearing.
Those moments where SA2 are enjoyable just don't feel worth it for the hassle of getting to them, but the game is generally easy enough to get through it without restarting levels too many times, at least before the last few levels where the challenge ramps up significantly. The game is certainly ambitious, or at least was, but all those lofty ideas are let down by what I find to be quite a simple observation; it's just not that fun to play.

If you have an older PC or PS3/360....
Like TOTD: Overkill, you need to figure out how to get the game working on the most modern hardware, which mean in my case means sacrificing resolution and fullscreen. This was never a problem on my old laptop. Therefore, this game needs serious optimization in order to run properly on modern hardware.
Overall, this game is great. and optimization would make it even better.

Sonic Adventure 2 is probably one of my favorite games of all time, probably a lot of nostalgia, but I also think it, along with Sonic Adventure 1, are much better than most of the later 3D Sonic games.
I first grew up playing this on the Dreamcast, and then got it on the Gamecube, and then later played it on both PS3 and Xbox 360 and then PC, which has become my platform of choice for the game.
I should probably say that despite my opinion on the game, there are definitely glaring flaws, it's not a perfect game despite being one of my favorites, a few of the major flaws I can probably think of are:
- Mech stages and treasure hunting stages, while fun imo, aren't nearly as fun as the standard speed stages
- Treasure hunting stages feel downgraded from Sonic Adventure 1, as you can only track one emerald a time now instead of all 3 (without mods)
- Mech stages don't feel nearly as coherent to play as Gamma did in SA1, they're slower and feel more like a tank
- Shadow only having 4 stages never sat right with me
- The camera is B A D
- Lighting got a huge downgrade over the original Dreamcast version
- It, to me, feels even more linear than SA1 did
Despite those flaws, I still think the HD version is well worth the asking price, regardless of if you get it on Steam, 360, or PS3, however I'd more recommend the PC version because of the large assortment of mods.
You might also be wondering why I never mentioned the Chao World, well, even as an adult let me tell you something, the Chao World is probably one of the most enjoyable features to me, and continues to be a time sink to this day, especially with mods like Chao World Extended and Shaddatic's Enhanced Chao World greatly increasing the variance, replayability, and how much of a time sink it is.
However I feel the Chao World is something you should try for yourself, as some people (like me) swear by it, while others feel it's a waste of time and only play it to get the last few emblems.
Overall? I give this game 11 chilidogs out of 10

I prefer the first Sonic Adventure game over this one, 100% though.
Only issue I had with this PC port is the Full Screen thing. For a select few people (or all people?) it seems to crash after the Sonic Team logo in Full Screen. So you're better off playing in windowed mode.
There is a few mods and tweaks you can go through but it's something you should not need to do, but whatever.
7/10 runs great other than that resolution problem.

It has early PC port written all over it, requiring a game reboot if you so much as insert a controller while the game is running, so no hotswapping (That's the term, right?) for you. Also blank spaces where the hotkeys are (imagine a red square instead of, say, a circle button if you were playing with a controller) if you're playing with keyboard.
So, in summary, unless you care about mods, just buy another port of this game.

The Best Sonic Game
[strike]in my opinion[/strike]
I love the updated 2 player Battle modes, I love all 3 playable characters, I love the levels, I love the soundtrack, I love the Chao Garden, basically, I love Sonic Adventure 2 <3
The main game is a huge amount of fun but I also love the Battle modes too, I spend a lot of time playing them with my friends and my girlfriend and it's just very enjoyable
I do not have much playtime on the Steam version but I've played the GameCube and PS3 versions many many times and SA2B is my 2nd favourite game of all time, I really recommend this game

It froze 4 times within an hour.
The audio mixing is even worse than past releases.
The lighting is completely broken at some stages.
The controls and hit detection feel a bit off.
The Battle expansion must be purchased as DLC.
I have no clue what could have happened to this version of the game but it is really disappointing to see. SEGA needs to fix this. I've put a whopping 170 hours into the GameCube version over the years and was really hoping to have a more convenient way to play it. I strongly recommend against playing Sonic Adventure 2 on Steam.
