YANOGA REVIEW
GRAPHICS - ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
From a graphical point of view ''Sonic Allstar Racing'' pretty much feels like a older ps3 game. Stiff animations and blurry graphics with a time to time rough 60fps.
From a design point of view on the other hand this game is brilliant. Very big variation on tracks and characters. You can feel the love and every map has his own little twist with little charming details. Because of this the game still is graphical enjoyable.
MUSIC - ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Brilliant soundtrack. Every Course got his own little themend song. Not quite on a Mario Kart Level but definitly top tier!
STORY - ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
No Story - Only Cups and little missions without a storyline.
GAMEPLAY - ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
The Heart of every Kartracer-Game. And what of a game this one is!
The sense of speed, the drifting-mechanic and all of that with the best of the Sega Squad is quite a trip. The cherry on this gameplay cup of tasty driving are the stages. I can't remember the last time where there was such a huge variation on tracks. You'll drive through a casino, a pirate ship, Tokyo, a Dinosaur Vulcano, a zombie mansion and thats not even the half of the brilliant tracks on this game. Only critic I've got is that COM is quite ''rubberband'', so they will teleport behind you when you doing to good. The Devs probably did that so that the Races will be exciting even when you driving the perfect round but for me that was a huge disruptive factor.
But in result this game is an absolut racer-blast!
WORTH BUYING - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
When you look for an alternative for Mario Kart than look no further!
This game is gorgeous and I had a lot of fun. Only the Singeplayer content is quite small with about 4 hours of acitivities but for a small buck (under 7-8€) I would definitly pick it up! PRO TIP: Take someone with a motorcyle because it seems like the tracks where designed with that in mind.

I used to play the shit out of this on the DS. Returning to it is nice, but it really makes me appreciate Transformed more. This game is quite lacklustre, the missions are boring and there is only six grand prixs that I managed to finish in two hours. There is a real lack of originality amongst the stages, they all come from one of five franchises: Sonic, Jet Set Radio, Super Monkey Ball, The House of the Dead, and Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. They all share similar level design and set pieces which leads to repetition. The game could really have benefited from having a more diverse stage count, but thankfully this was rectified in the sequel.
The characters are also very unbalanced, with no way to even it out. Every character is stuck with their default stats, and there is no reason to pick anyone besides Ryo or Shadow as bikes seem to dominate this game. The vehicles themselves are weird and I can see why they added boats and planes in the sequel. For example, Tails' car is a specialised version of the Tornado... a plane. Ulala's is also a flying futuristic vehicle, so with the inconsistency I can see why in the sequel they evenly gave everyone one car, boat and plane and I think that works better.
I would say this game controls tightly when compared to its sequel. In Transformed, sometimes I feel a real lack of control over my vehicle as a boat or a plane, and as a car it can feel as inputs are are not sharp. Whereas in this game, the controls feel amazing. I never once had a problem with them or felt I wasn't in control of my vehicle at any given point. I also much prefer how boosting is handled in this game, you get your level three boost quite quickly which really helps you speed through these stages.
As a whole, Transformed is still the better game. The transforming cars and stages and more content make the original feel bare-bones, but there is still enjoyment to be had here. If you get this game on sale (I literally got it for £1) or even full price (£5) and think of it as an expansion on what you have already played then you'll have a great time. If you have not played either and want to give this a go, playing this will make you appreciate Transformed's additions even more.
On a side note, come on SEGA, port Superstars Tennis to PC too.

The Short Version:
One way of describing the idea of All Stars Racing would be to call it “Sega’s answer to Mario Kart”, and you can see why. It has a similar charm, a familiar gameplay loop to those experienced with kart racers and, most importantly of all, is fun to play. Sadly, it doesn’t take long for the appeal to wash away.
The problems it suffers from are plentiful, ranging from lackluster content, balancing issues, a few technical hiccups and a lack of replay value. If you’re looking for some cheap fun that’ll last you a small handful of hours, you might be satisfied with this. If it’s something more you’re after, you should probably avoid this one.

Bringing a Universe Together...
As the name might imply, Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing sees various Sega franchises come together to battle it out through racing, similar to how Nintendo does with Mario Kart. You have Super Monkey Ball, Billy Hatcher, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, and many, many more.
Accompanying a handful of Sonic characters is a playable representative from each featured series, bringing the total roster up to 20 racers. Each one has their own vehicle, which helps make them stand out. These designs range from pretty cool to rather dull, but they get the job done. The race tracks, however, are the main areas that visually shine the most.
Like the characters, the courses you compete on take place in a variety of environments based on different SEGA titles, such as the sunny and colourful Seaside Hill from the classic Sonic games and the arid Detritus Desert from Super Monkey Ball. Despite their age, these maps are still attractive to look at, and this is due to their vibrancy and presentation. Every track looks different and is filled with detail.
What helps make these races even more memorable is the iconic soundtrack. With the exception of a couple flat tunes, the music is catchy and adds to the excitement of the experience. As a whole, the sound is done rather well. There’s an exasperating narrator that can make your ears bleed, but luckily he can be turned off.
Unfortunately, these charming details are immediately let down by the numerous technical issues that are present. There is an excessive use of motion blur and visual effects, including a vignette that is most noticeable when boosting through the track. These intrude the experience and can actually make the races harder to navigate. The good news is that some of these can be turned off, in the graphics settings that are outside of the game itself, in a different exe file… a bit annoying that.
Then there are the FPS drops, and these are way too frequent. They usually appear at random, but the majority that I experienced occurred whilst drifting around corners or getting hit by other racers. I have no idea why it happens since my PC is more than capable but regardless, they impede on the enjoyment.
So… now what?
All Stars Racing contains the type of content you’d expect to see in any kart racer. There’s a grand prix mode comprising six cups, alongside a time trial mode for those who wish to compete against other player’s records, something that I didn’t really engage in, but it’s there for people who want it.
Then you have the side missions. They are supposed to be extra content, something to keep you playing after you finish all of the grand prix. The problem with them is that the majority are insanely easy, and can be completed in less than a minute. They are also basic. You do get the odd one that spices things up a little bit, but usually they fall flat. I only completed about half of them before I got so bored that I gave up.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2525168964
This is a huge issue because there's little else to do aside from these missions. There is the shop system that allows you to purchase new characters, races and songs to play in the background using an in-game currency called ‘miles’. If you want, you can grind away to unlock all of these, but aside from that, there’s nothing.
This could have been partly solved if the PC port included the online multiplayer mode, something which could’ve given it a much higher replay value. It existed on other platforms, but not for PC. There is a split-screen mode so I will give it that, but if you want to play online with friends, you can’t.
Let the Race Begin!
Ignoring the lack of content, how does it play? If you’ve invested time in other kart racers, you should be able to settle in rather quickly. The mechanics are simple: you can drive (duh), drift and perform a stunt, with the last two giving you a speed boost upon completion.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2525170520
Right from the get go I encountered balancing issues. Some characters have it way too easy, whereas others are virtually unplayable. Knuckles and Amy, for example, can build up a drift very easily and boost to their heart's content. On the flip side, you have Tails and Big the Cat, the former constantly swaying from side to side, and the latter being an absolute pain to control.
The ones that can build up drifts quickly and have shorter stunts will generally have an advantage. All of the others will struggle to compete with them, especially on tracks with tight corners. These issues become more noticeable the longer you play, and it got to the point where I only stuck with a select few characters since I didn’t see any reason not to.
Then you have the ones in the middle that while aren’t bad to play, just don’t provide any meaningful advantage, other than for the player to be able to say “Hey, look! I’m playing as the guy from Crazy Taxi!”. It’s a shame because when you can ignore poor balancing, the game as a whole is quite enjoyable to play.
What makes it fun is how action-packed it is. Whilst you’re racing, you are able to pick up power-ups. These items are diverse and have both offensive and defensive capabilities. On top of this, each character also has an “All-Star” move that is unique to them, and can be acquired if they are losing to grant them assistance. It’s a neat idea that’s executed well.
The entertainment value is further escalated thanks to the challenging nature of the AI. It’s far from perfect, as it takes them forever to use a power-up, but it’s difficult enough to be able to pose a threat.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2525168754
I did encounter some issues with hitboxes though, and these are especially visible when you collide with other racers. There were a few instances of characters falling through floors or being forced to a halt as a result of either colliding with someone or hitting a wall. It’s worth noting though that these glitches are uncommon, and that overall, there is fun to be had here, even if the enjoyment is short lived.

The game has a great roster of characters, some banging music and some really cool tracks to zip around.
I'm fond of the commentator in the game too.
Mission mode was alright, but some missions were a bit tedious.
It's still fun to play split screen multiplayer with, and I do, on the odd occasion.
The being said, the console version had ONLINE multiplayer which I loved, yet sadly this one does not.
So I'll say get this if you love fun and quirky kart/arcadey racers and SEGA characters, then when you've beaten this one, THEN get it's sequel, cos that one has different characters and tracks and, wouldn't you know it, an online mode for PC, whoopie!
Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing is a 8/10 for me :)

Audio: Amazing soundtrack always stuck in my head from SEGA history
Graphics: Bloody impressive for a Wii game. Pretty even today.
Performance: My computer isn't good, as in *drops frames often in any game <10 y.o on normal settings*, and besides a tiny stutter when loading in the map, the game is butter.
Gameplay: Simple, yes. Still not easy to win all the time. Items are stock standard, and shortcuts are numerous but kinda boring. You play this game for the drifting and speed-increasing mechanics with tricks, ramps, drifting and snaking, etc. Very fun.
Fanservice: everything for anyone who's played a SEGA console game before. As well as well known characters and tracks like SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, there's MONKEY BALL, BILLY HATCHER, JET SET/GRIND RADIO, HOUSE OF THE DEAD/CURIEN MANSION, VIRTUA FIGHTER, as well as arcade throwbacks like OPA OPA from FANTASY ZONE. So much for a SEGA fan here it's ridiculous. I want an expanded port of this game and Transformed combined.
8.5/10 Amazing game, a tad simple after a while

The courses fun, the races chaotic, the character unlocks rewarding enough for what it is and overall, it's nice to put a few hours into this casual experience.
downsides:
- The PC port, though good enough, is not great. (however controller vibration being included was a fun surprise)
- I've read somewhere that this game used to have DLC, but that's not to be found on this port.

A game that stood the test of time
Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing, released 10 years ago during the Playstation 3 / Xbox 360 era, is a kart game that still holds up today. While this PC port is miles behind of the PC ports that SEGA does today (mostly UI-wise and for the lack of Steam features), the game itself runs fine – even on a potato – and the experience is great for both single-player and split-screen for up to four players. There’s no online multiplayer, so keep that in mind. In my humble opinion, this is the second best Sonic racing title on Steam, getting behind of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, and one of my favorite kart racers, thanks to the great sense of speed.
A lot of content
While the graphics are showing its age, the gameplay is where is at, and there’s a lot of content, starting with the 20 characters from several SEGA IPs, like Alex Kidd, Fantasy Zone, Samba de Amigo, Super Monkey Ball, Space Channel 5, among others. There are four modes: Grand Prix (with six cups), Single Race (choose between 24 tracks), Time Trials (for trying to surpass you own high scores), Split-screen (local Multiplayer) and Missions (64 in total). You can also unlock more stuff using the SEGA Miles, which are the ingame currency – don’t worry; no microtransactions here. Also, it’s possible to have up to four racer profiles at once, so up to four people can have their separate profiles.
Not everything is great
Like I said earlier, this port is far from perfect. There are ingame achievements, but no Steam achievements, there’s no cloud save support and the User Interface shows only keyboard keys on the screen, despite the game supporting officially Xbox controllers – with rumble functioning and the buttons mapped accordingly with the Xbox 360 version. There are also some bugs, like zombies shaking, some lighting glitches and a very rare bug (that I’ve experienced only once during my 20 hours of gameplay) that makes the power-ups take a lot longer to be randomly chosen. And there’s no online multiplayer, but there’s Steam Remote Play (a feature for playing local multiplayer games online), so it’s still possible to play with your friends from far away, but I haven’t tested this feature, so I don’t know how good it works.
A good purchase, especially on sale
Honestly, the 10 dollars base price is fine in my view, but if you’re not sure you’re gonna like this game, wait for a sale – it’s frequently discounted for 75% off, so it’s a steal at that price. Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing is a great game, even if you started with Transformed, and it’s a blast - solo and with friends. Last, but not least: I haven’t experienced any technical issues, but if your game need some fixes and tweaks, check this forum thread for the solutions and workarounds.
Pros:
*Nice variety of tracks
*Great and fun gameplay
*A lot of content and unlockables
*Good soundtrack and sound effects
*It’s a game that stood the test of time
Cons:
*User Interface not adapted for Xbox gamepads
*No Steam achievements
*No cloud support
*Minor bugs and glitches
*Lack of official online multiplayer

Unfortunately, this port has not been updated and/or refined to work smoothly with Windows 10. I managed to get the game to work by tweaking a bunch of settings and was actually able to complete all tracks and circuits and yes, this is a fine kart racer when everything works fine. All Stars Racing Transformed (the next game in this series) is a much improved game in almost every way.

The items are just pretty generic and the track design is often ok but sometimes you get punished for boosting. The Super Monkey Ball tracks are especially annoying with those tight turns that you sometimes dont see. An actual minimap would've been helpful. The missions are fun, the characters are often ones you've never heard of, except you actually know more about Segas characters. The cars are pretty mediocre. I just dont understand why Eggman has a car that is literally the size of Shadows Bike x5.
Buy it if you like Sonic, but if you actually want a good Sonic racing game buy Transformed. Theres no real reason to get back to this racing game except nostalgia or wanting to finish every Sonic game. Everything that Sonic & Allstars Racing Transformed does is better than this.
