Über das Spiel
In SKYE you explore the land in your trusty seaplane. You can land your plane anywhere on the water and visit the local port to pick up quests. The surrounding environment allows for you to maneuver through rock arches, to pass rock formations and to soar island peaks.
The quests from the locals challenge you to guide ships, follow other airplanes, pick-up goods and to set the fastest times in races! You can also explore and experience the world at your own pace and allow yourself to be distracted by collectibles, can you find them all?
The world of SKYE has a painterly effect which gives it a unique look. The beautiful world is crafted with attention to each of its features: whether it's the waters surrounding the islands, the steep rock cliffs or the green plains filled with flowers.
SKYE is created by a team of 3rd year game development students from Breda University of Applied Sciences (formerly known as NHTV) with the soundtrack provided by Alex Tosh. After four months of active development, preceded by half a year of concepting, we are excited to finally be sharing our game on Steam!

If I have any complaints it's that the mouse doesn't really do anything apart from wiggle the camera a little, I thought it might have let you free-look around and see things below/behind you but there's no such option.
Other than that wee quirk, I absolutely recommend for a relaxing time! If you're hunting for achievements too, I got them all without a guide in about 1h30, the rest of my time is just flying around enjoying the scenery. Awesome job to everyone involved and thank you for the experience!

WHY did nobody tell me of this before, and how come this amazing idea and execution is only here, in this indie game, with 138 players all-time peak?
This is one of the most beautiful things my PC has seen.

It's a very short game but I still enjoyed it, wouldn't mind throwing a bit of money their way if they allowed donations since the quality is exceptional for a free game, heart went into making it and I didn't encounter any bugs or errors whatsoever.
Note:
---
At the time of writing, even if you get all achievements it doesn't count as a 'perfect game', not sure if this is because it's a free game or because Steam has listed it as 'Profile Features Limited', not really sure why the latter has been applied to the game.

The visuals have a pleasing, colourful and painterly look that evokes calmness. The only game that comes to mind for comparison is 11-11 Memories Retold. Soundtrack is very sparse, unintrusive and further increases the calmness of the game.
You start with your old friend Samuel calling you to help him fix his plane and deliver spare parts to the village of Libra. You don't have to follow his request, you're free to go fly over the island from the start and enjoy the scenery, fly circles around the lighthouse or pull some acrobatic maneuvers through the island's ruins.
If you decide to follow the story, there will be more quests and even some sidequests available from local denizens, an old fisherman and a weird old lady that gives off smuggler vibes. When you get the feel of flying, which is very arcady, but feels good, you'll want to test out your mettle at races and aerial shooting that the old lady seems to be very fond of. There's no actual combat and no real danger, you just shoot at floating dummy targets.
The game features two types of collectibles, forgotten spyglasses and unmarked floating targets that appear during the main quest. There's even a photo mode, if you want to test your artistic eye.
Mouse and keyboard controls are somewhat laggy, but they're manageable. It does play better with a controller. There are some minor control issues and the menu is overly fiddly, but that doesn't take away from a restful experience.
It's about 2 hours long meditative flying experience and my mind couldn't help but wander slightly to Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises as I was flying around the island and just letting my worries float away. And I love that the achievement thumbnails are postage stamps and the final one is a completed postcard.
Created by 3rd year game development students from Breda University of Applied Sciences, it's a student project worthy of your time. And let me draw your eyes to some of their other student projects, all offering something different, all free to play.
Take a peek inside the Cabinet of Curiosities if you like to walk off the beaten path and only sometimes return to the main roads. You might find something worth exploring. And if you do, thank you for the visit.
Follow the Average Achievement Hunter Curator for reviews and useful information on Steam achievements: 17 achievements, one slightly tricky one. Tricky one is a collectible race where you'll need to get a good handle of flying and learn the patterns. There's a good guide on Steam for the other collectible.

Here's what you do:
SKYE is a game about flying a small airplane while visiting an island. The story progresses by taking on missions for an hour or two and then the game is over. The missions include transporting cargo, escorting boats, flying through rings, and shooting targets. (Keep in mind the gun is unlocked after a few missions in, when targets are setup all around the island)
What I like:
+ The flying is fun, there is no way to run out of gas, ammo, or even crash, giving the player plenty of leniency to explore the island.
+ The game creator has made some updates to the game since it came out to fix bugs.
Conclusion:
This is a free game, only takes a couple hours to do everything, and is generally fun to just casually fly around in. It definitely feels like a prototype of a game which could be expanded to something bigger, but this is free so no complaints.

The art style and music are lovely.
You can fly freely wherever you want on the island.
The controls took a little getting used to, but otherwise were smooth.
There's no pressure, unless you want to get gold placement on the two races.
Overall, a great game to play for a while just to relax.
And it's free! So why not? This game is better than some of the ones I've paid for.
I only wish there was more!

That being said, this feels like an alpha test for a massive open-world seaplane adventure. I finished all main quests in under an hour and found myself wanting more. With such a pleasant art style and easy gameplay, it would be incredibly fun if the game was at least 10x larger, maybe with multiple villages with different quests, a greater variety of missions, and a larger map.
tl;dr Nice game, too small

There are some problems here. The art style is the biggest one. It reminded me of oil paintings, it looks good from a distance if you squint and crook your head to the side, but not so much from up close - that'd be fine except we're flying low over a lot of that scenery. I note how a lot of the screen shots people have taken are of overhead or distant shots of the island, not up close. It doesn't look good.
Also, I'm not sure a plane behaves like this. When I push left, it doesn't roll over all the way, and even when I use the super secret analogue stick technique to get it all the way upside down, the camera snatches my nicely inverted plane back to level flight after a moment. The stopping distance is jarring, and there is an obvious difference in handling between airborne and grounded (seaed?) noticeable when the plane accelerates twice - once on the sea and then again in the air.
Also, why does the plane bounce? Well, refuse to explode? Y'know, when I plunge full-bore into a cliff (by accident of course), I was rather expecting a game over or a reset to checkpoint - y'know the reset that is there in lieu of stalling at the flight ceiling. Instead, the plane unhappily billowed and blazed, so for fun I flew directly into the ground for a few minutes and the fire poured from the engine for a satisfyingly long time afterwards.
There is a vibe of serene indie experience to this game. I'm sure most folks are very supportive and have enjoyed their slice of Skye. I enjoyed the structured missions and exploring. Escorting friends and challenges were high points. Things only started to pale when I discovered my death-defying feats carried no consequences and my attempts at aerobatics were foiled. It dawned on me that the serene tone was mostly found in the music and the actual mechanics are chaotic and fail to convey the same feeling; a pity, as flight can be very relaxing when treated with respect.

The control of the airplane is arcade style, and I personally would have loved to have some more real handling of the plane. Anyway, the arcade controls are spot on, and makes flying a breeze.
The achievements are well designed and you can get them all in just over an hour.
The missions are a bit boring, but are not really repetitive. (I guess a dogfight which could have been more fun, does not really fit the cute style of the game.)
The race mode is the most fun, with the second race being the only real challenge in the game.
Great if you want to relax....and it's free!

One of the best 58 minutes I have spent. The graphics are pleasant, the story-writing is simple but easy to follow and the whole game is so sedate that it could easily have been a sloth. Game play is clean and simple; it wasn't designed to be a challenging, complex game.
This is completely a work of art.

Very rough in areas though. New Game replaces your save file without warning (thanks game). I couldn't find a way to bring up my missions menu or even how to get to races. No key binding. No... well, no mention of what some keys even do other than hitting the keyboard and finding out the hard way.
Plays very much like a beta build or an abandoned game that had promise.

I'd have paid money for this.
But, it's free! And that's not really a price you can beat.
Skye is a game wherein you pilot a seaplane and effectively do what ever you want. However, you're able to visit a port on the seaside in the Village of Libra and get some quests that need done around the island. Most of these are simple fetch quests. Some are escort missions — your standard stay inside of a certain zone affair. There's no real combat so there's nothing to worry about — The President's daughter won't be screaming “Leon!” every two seconds. This is a relaxing, almost poignant game.
It's got full Pitch, Roll and Yaw control. You're able to throttle down, roll left, pull up into the bank and throttle through or just lackadaisically float about. It's pretty arcade-y feeling. Though, having it be full flight sim physics might have taken away from the relaxed nature the game is going for. It's not trying to be Crimson Skies — you do eventually get to shoot some targets, however.
A Painted World.
I'm not entirely sure what exactly this art style is, either some sort of voxelized/low-poly/cel-shading hybrid or something I simply cannot discern, it's gorgeous. Reminds me a lot of this game.

The soundtrack here is sparse, meaning few notes are actually played. It gives off a certain somber tone to the whole game. Aside from the races you can start in the Port of Libra, where the music takes on a bit more of a jovial feel.
Some might see a game like this and say it's not really a game or find that performing menial tasks for an old fisherman around an island is a waste of time. Others might find it profound. Like something off the beaten path — the world seems a lot different when you take into account every face you've ever seen is another player one. Each one with different stories to tell. I've landed somewhere in between those extremes in this instance. Perhaps the fact I've even thought to write this paragraph as a reaction suggests that this game might lead to some self-reflection or an existential crisis, if you're inclined that way. I guess that's what makes it 'artsy'.
I'd would go as far as to say that were there more islands to explore, more quests and a bit more story — more races — I'd have happily paid up to $15-$20 given what else is available in these types of artsy games — simply as a juxtaposition. I rarely, if ever mention specific numbers in these regards.
THE GIST:
It's free, it's cool. There are quests. But you don't have to do any of that —You can just fly around if you want.
