One Hour Reviews #73 - Sins of a Solar Empire - Trinity
Sins of a Solar Empire - Trinity advertises itself as a combination of a 4X game and a real-time strategy game, and I find that to be a pretty accurate description. Having never played this or any of it's related games, I hopped straight into the tutorial, which is broken up into 4 parts: Basic Gameplay and Logistics followed by Advanced Interface and Logistics. Overall, I felt like the tutorial did a pretty good job taking me through the various aspects of the game. It actually took me about 45 minutes of my playthough just to finish the tutorial, so that only left me 15 minutes to start a new game.
One thing I found myself wishing with the new game was that there was something of a story more or a campaign. But instead you just get a selection of a bunch of scenarios. I didn't really have a good sense of where I should start, although each scenario does have a description of what it's about, and what style of play is best for each scenario. I was mostly bummed about the lack of a campaign just because I felt like there was all of this cool backstory with the different races that I was missing out on.
But as for the gameplay itself, I think it's a pretty solid game. The only real issues I had while playing was at times I struggle with selecting the units I wanted to. But to be honest, I think that had as much to do with my lack of skill with real-time strategy games. That's never been a particularly strong genre for me.
And that's what brings me to the one thing I would warn people about. This game really isn't kidding when it says its a real-time strategy game. Most 4x games I've played are more turn based, so if you are used to that kind of game, this has the potential to throw you off. In some ways I feel like it's more of an RTS with 4x trappings rather than a 4x game with RTS elements. I don't think that's inherently a bad thing, but if you aren't a big RTS fan to begin with, then I think it's going to really impact your enjoyment of this game. So I can still handily recommend this game, just keep this warning in mind.

But I'll give this game a yes because it was good. Great, actually. :D
