The bland brown textures, the CoD-like shooting mechanics and the lifeless expressions from characters who talk to you, this doesn't get any more 2008.
The game has some uniqueness with the campaign taking place in a Russian island and the TMD (that device on the player's arm). Another thing I liked about this game is that with this type of FPS games, where there are both normal soldier enemies AND monsters, the developers usually make you fight the monsters more than the regular enemies but in Singularity the developers realized that monsters suck ass, so you mostly fight enemy soldiers.
With the good stuff out of the way here are my main problems with the game.
The game is very short, I played for 7.4 hours, 1 - 2 hours of which were me AFKing. For $20 a 5-6 hours of a very linear CoD-like campaign doesn't seem like such a good deal.
A lot of the gimmicks in this game are either useless or counter-productive unless the game forces you to use them. Like your ability to age props is only used in order to progress further or collect stuff, I just wish they would make the game more detailed by adding random props to age, just like Half-Life 2 lets you play around with your gravity gun and random props. The game also gives you the ability to turn enemy soldiers into monsters, but after the first couple of times it gets boring and just ends up stretching the game - The monsters are supposed to be blind and only spot you via sound but for some reason they instantly chase you, the monsters can also kill you in 2 hits which is quite easy for them in this game because the levels are very narrow.
The game suffers from terrible level design. there are multiple ways to go through and things to explore but everything looks so bland and confusing it gave me a headache and I tried my best to finish this game.
This is one of those games where if you turn back to a character talking you wouldn't hear them, usually you can solve this by enabiling subtitles but for whatever reason this game doesn't have the option to enable subtitles (atleast not while playing).
Sometimes the checkpoint can be annoying and aiming with your hand-device thingy can be a pain in the ass because it doesn't like going where the crosshair points.
There is also a multiplayer mode but obviously it's dead.
Overall, I'd recommend getting this game during a sale if you really like old CoD campaigns and want one with some gimmicks.
4/10
I'm going to forget about this game by the end of the week.

How it stood the test of time? I have no idea. I need to replay it some day. But I will never forget how amazing and revolutionary it was at the time for me. I recommended this obscure game to everyone I knew. Simply amazing.

While its not the most visually striking FPS at first glance, it comes to strength in its time-shift mechanic which brings you between the present and the past in the campaign, and allows you to harness the manipulation of time to age certain objects around you, or even enemies. And it feels comfortably intertwined with the gunplay, which is equally solid.
Essentially, it's a solid blend of elements taken from other narrative-focused shooters, with a BioShock-esque health system, a dark, gloomy atmosphere comparable to Half-Life, I'd argue even the tiniest hint of TimeSplitters, as you'll find yourself hopping between the present day and the past (and the fact that some of the mutants you'll encounter can vanish and flank you in a matter similar to the Time Splitters).
Definitely worth checking out, albeit at a sale. As much as I enjoyed it, it does show its age now, ironically.

On the surface, it seems like a more campaign-centric CoD clone with an extra gimmick tacked on and to an extent it is, but the level design and flow of combat I found to be more interesting than the slow cover-to-cover shooting that I associate with games from this era and the execution of said gimmick was actually pretty good, giving combat an extra dimension and allowing for some puzzles to rest your trigger finger.
It's not without flaws, however. The primary one is the story, which doesn't have to contend with a very high standard in its genre but could still have been a lot better. Characters are effectively static and the progression is very generic especially for a game in which the protagonist wields the ability to alter time.
The roster of weapons, I feel, could have been a little more interesting. No two weapons serve the same purpose, but the most reliable loadout is evident practically from the onset and fun stuff like the gun that fires exploding spikes or the grenade launcher with controllable projectiles are effective in only one level each.
Overall, worth it on sale. It has some minor replay value for different endings and secrets that may have been missed and is decent fun in its own right.

Features:
Bullet time, dismemberment and cover seeking enemies.
Time travel plot with a few half-life style puzzles and bioshock style upgrades for your time manipulator.
Worth it at 75% off, very few other games this decade have slow-mo or allow u to create time bubbles in an fps, and the bullets are projectile instead of hit-scan, makes for interesting firefights across your bubbles.

The unique aspect of Singularity is TMD - Time Manipulation Device which introduces several gameplay feautures such as aging/deaging objects, including human and some of mutant enemies thus making them to be completely erased (
doesnt work on all enemies though
); telekinesis; ability to throw a ball which makes time in its radius move slower and Impulse which has several usage cases depending on situation. When some enemy bothered me to death I just wiped him out using TMD, it felt very satysfying to watch I must admit lol
Pros:
- Endings. Keep in mind that this game was released back when Activision wasnt just pulling another reskined CoD every year, as a result this game has 3 endings. I have to say though that 2 of them doesn't make any sense at all after all you experience during playthrough and third one IS better than those 2
but still is not the fully good ending either
. Oh, btw
in order to see all 3 endings you don't have to replay the game from the start, just press Continue in Main Menu and game will throw you at last checkpoint before THE CHOICE
. The story itself and storytelling are pretty basic
except for some writings on walls you will see sometimes
.
- TMD upgrade mechanic. There is an Augmentator which allows you to upgrade the TMD and character itself. Upgrades are done by ingame currency E-99 which can be found throughout the game, just search for it in every corner/box. If you look carefully you can end up becoming very powerfull human being closer to the ending.
- Atmosphere.
Cons:
- Sound issue. I have no idea if this is exclusive for me but for some reason the game was WAAAAAYYYY TOOO SILENT that I had to crank up the volume of speakers up too max and still couldnt hear some of audio recordings accurately ( and yes I didn't try using headphones due to technical issues).
- There is no Singularity 2. Same with Bulletstorm, I really wish this game got a sequel where they could improve gameplay aspects they began in this part and dive deeper in the world where Katorga 12 is present. But seems god damn Activision wasn't pleased with sales so they didnt give a greenlight for sequel.
- Not all guns are usefull! There are 7 guns you can change between in special points and 2 you can not always carry with yourself. 3 out of 7 guns you can change between are completely useless on the highest difficulty, at leat for me. Revolver has annoyingly slow fire rate; there is some rifle that shoots projectiles that explode shortly after reaching the target, from my experience though projectiles just were flying through the target or doing basicly no dmg at all, using this weapon wasn't satysfying at all; grenade launcher primary fire has a delay before explosion and its alt-fire is the dumbest shit i have seen in this game - it releases an explosion ball which you can move using WASD and explode by releasing the fire button, but in order to do that you have to scan the area you gonna use this weapon on, remember where the obstacles are ,where did enemy hide and the distance between you and enemies what is impossible to do on the highest difficulty cause you loose HP very fast in this game + mutant enemies in 99% of cases run towards you and shooting a grenade close to yourself isn't a good idea. Concluding all of this - avoid this shit.
- Weapon upgrade mechanic is very basic. All you can do is upgrade mag size, reload speed and dmg the weapon does. Why the heck would I want to upgrade dmg of a sniper rifle which already one shots enemies or increase reload speed of the revolver?? If this mechanic could allow me to fix the bad points of guns I pointed previously It would be much better thus making every gun viable. But nope, I ended up using rifle + shotgun combo with occasional switches to minigun and taking sniper for locations where enemies were far enough.
- Energy for TMD device gets drained too fast before you even start the joy. Seriously though, aging/deaging human enemies results in TMD energy bar getting to 0 in like 2-3 uses in the beggining and like 4-5 if you upgrade its capacity. The amount is too low, it doesn't let fully enjoy the gameplay, enjoy using this powerfull device, doesn't let you feel like an unstopable demolishing machine because once you get taste of it and try to do some powerfull thing on another enemy the recharge animation begins -____-
- No replay value.
A couple of neutral points:
- Lenght of the game - 8 hours. This is how much it took me to complete in on highest difficulty. Worth to mention is that I wasnt rushing, was scanning the locations slowly and carefully to find upgrade blueprints and ingame currency, was reading every note and listening to every audio recording so you may finish it even faster if you rush through. For me the lenght feels ok because it fits with low amount of weapons, upgrades and capabilities of the game. For some of you this may be another negative point.
- Game assists you too much. There are checkpoints very close to each other; you will never find yourself out of medpacks cause they are everywhere; I didnt even carried the sniper rifle with myself because in areas where you clearly knew you gonna have some long range gunplay there always was a sniper rifle laying nearby ( what a coincidence eh?); the most boring bossfight ever, just shooting weakpoints and avoiding attacks. The only thing that made my playthrough a bit challenging is the fact that you get killed pretty fast at early stages so you are forced to use cover pretty much. Later, after you dump most of upgrades in HP I could freely run around and close to enemies to blast their heads off with shotgun. Again, some of you would want some chilling fps after work and rest put this as negative as well.
- Game as CoD is linear and some level designs feel uninspired. This resulted in me rarely switching my shotgun to something else, becasue why would constantly run a minigun or sniper in close quarters eh? And again some of you could miss some linear game after load of modern open world games and rest would always want some freedom to explore.
Concluding - 6.5 out of 10. Yes, I wrote that I am glad to add this game in my collection but that is the point... it is MY collection. If you like FPSs which involve more than just simple shooting from guns, you might consider checking out this game when it hits huge sale again, because it is very good in terms of gameplay ideas. Such a shame that such games don't get sequels where they can be improved.

In the story of Singularity, you are a US soldier sent to investigate an abnormality in Soviet soil. You then discover it is caused by an accident called Singularity which also causes organism mutation and history altering. Now your job is to fix the time interruption and capture the culprit while battling against mutated monsters and Soviet soldiers.
It sounds like an intriguing story and it might actually be, but I didn’t find out because of how the narrative was handled.
- There are tons of notes, audios and graffiti in the environments as supplements to the story background, but they are usually hidden and the game doesn’t give you any motive to look for them, and I doubt people will actually stop to read long texts and listen to long audios in a fast-paced shooter.
- The story offers three endings, but it only has one decision-making at the very end, feeling like an afterthought. I think a series of decision-making could have made players care about the story a lot more, but that never happened.
- It is a game made in a period when cutscene hasn’t become a standard narrative choice. Most story and explaining are told by dialogues, which you are likely to miss because you are busy with other things, or you don’t have the patience to listen. What is even worse is the game doesn’t have subtitles so that you can’t easily check what the dialogue is about.
- At the end of the day, dialogue is a hard narrative method to be done right. A lot of information will be missing, and it can’t give a stellar presentation as cutscene to fully immerse players into the character and the story, making them actually care.
So, if you are one of the few who really pay attention to the story from start to finish, you might have a blast. But the narrative failed to capture my attention, making the story more of a meh to me, and I am sure lots of people will feel the same way.
Gameplay-wise, Singularity is basically the same as other standard first-person shooters, except there is a time device that can pull objects, slow down and push away enemies, etc. I first thought it is another Bioshock where you can use abilities to aid your combat, but later I find it does so little you might just forget it exists. The reason is except for the push function (the only useful function for combat), you can’t use the device and weapons simultaneously. You have to lower your gun, use the device, then switch back your weapons manually to continue combat. You really don’t want to do this mid-combat because it is fast-paced and this game has sluggish control, taking ages to switch weapons. As a result, it is a massively underutilized feature and could have made a significant difference to the gameplay than just solving puzzles.
Now that you realize the time device is basically useless, we can talk about why the gameplay can cause a polarized experience. It comes down to combat and weapon design.
It is a game heavily punishes shooting inaccuracy due to several designs.
- Ammo is relatively limited, especially if you don’t actively search the environments.
- Though not as bad as Halo 2, TTD is relatively short (normal difficulty). You can die very fast if you don’t have health and defense upgrades.
- Enemy is fast. Monsters will rush at you at fast speed and human enemies will start shooting even before seeing you.
- Body shot doesn’t do much damage, especially when your weapons are not upgraded.
- The control is clunky and slow so you don’t want to reload or heal mid-combat.
Consequently, accuracy (headshots) becomes vitally important. Moreover, there are lots of mid and long-range encounters and many enemies will appear at the same time, requiring rapid fire and reliability at all range. Therefore, you want to stick to assault rifle and sniper rifle, which are the only two weapons that can ensure these three requirements. You can also pick up two one-time-use-only special weapons, but other than that, you just make it hard on yourself, because other weapons have problematic accuracy (pistol and shotgun have an aim down sight that super hard to aim), terribly short range or long latency (take time to take effects), making them just aren’t very effective in combat.
This is actually an unbalanced and flawed weapon design that conflicts with combat design. It can sour the experience as well. At first, I picked the wrong weapons and my experience was quite miserable, but after I picked the right combo, my experience took off and I finished the game under six hours because of how easy it became (not a hard game anyway). It is really bizarre to see how much a difference different weapon choices can make.
There are other pros and cons about this game, but none of them are as significant as the mentioned above.
- Graphics are beautiful as an old game.
- Enemy has okay variety and boss design is not bad.
- It is a linear structure game, but has a good design that encourages exploration.
- The game is way too short.
- The control is sluggish, as mentioned.
- Camera shaking is unable to turn off. It can shake like crazy and cause lots of uncomfortable flickering when aiming.
- The game has abnormally high sensitivity. Minimum sensitivity is just enough to get by ( for 700 DPI). You might need to adjust mouse DPI additionally.
- FOV is a bit uncomfortable, taking some time to get used to.
If the game fully explored and implemented this cool time manipulation setting into the gameplay, it could have been great. That obviously didn't happen, and given the flaws it has, I just don't think it is a good game. Your mileage may vary though, as I mention, it really depends on how you play the game.

Yeah, that. Longer (whole game), and more and more complex mechanics, for time and physics. Although time is also physics i guess.... Anyway, All used in combat and puzzles. Pretty neat.
Less Titans though....
Seriously, it's a bit older, but doesn't look or play too shabby at all. Apart from the odd small physics glitch.
It starts like a ordinary linear shooter, but not for long. It stays pretty linear ( a bit too linear and scripted) but definitely not ordinary, So far pretty impressed and surprised. Story a bit bonkers but cool.

Singularity had a rough development. After two years, the game was barely functional, and Activision gave them an ultimatum. They had 10 months to finish and ship the game, or else it would be cancelled. So the devs feverishly worked to cobble what they could into a game and push it out the door. The game had next to no marketing, bombed in sales, but they hit the deadline, and wouldn't ya know it, managed to turn out a pretty fun game. It's fairly standard in most areas, and derivative in parts (Keith Fuller himself stated in a Polygon interview that they copied Bioshock's audio logs simply because it was an easy, quick way to partially salvage the story). But the gameplay itself is solid and the concepts are neat.
As an American soldier, you're sent on a covert mission to a Russian island and quickly find yourself involved in some time shenanigans, where you'll bounce back and forth between Soviet Russia in the 50s and a now-altered present where Soviet Russia rules the world. Alongside more standard weapons, you also have a device that lets you manipulate time. It's pretty similar to Half Life 2's gravity gun, but it's a bit more integral to combat. You can create pockets where time is slowed down, age enemies into dust, slow down enemies that are phasing in and out of time, and more. And then there's my favorite weapon, the Seeker Rifle. It's an ordinary looking rifle that shoots explosive rounds, but when you aim down the sights you're able to control the bullet's trajectory. It operates the exact same way the remote-controlled Batarang does in the Batman Arkham games, except instead of just hitting switches you steer a bullet into someone's face and watch their head explode. Good times.
Sadly, outside of combat and some basic puzzles, the time manipulation is largely sidelined. Raven Software just flat out didn't have the time (ironic, innit?) to implement most of what they wanted to. Still though, it's a fun shooter, and well worth playing if you're a fan of Raven Software. It is fairly short though, so you may want to wait for a sale before you pick it up.

But it *does* demonstrate the potential of game developers s and how it is being hindered by Electronic Arts.
In short: Raven Software was/is being capable of producing works of art - sadly, EA never gave them a proper chance. They have been relegated to Call-of-Duty duty ever since. A massive waste of potential, if you're asking me.
So, yeah - SINGULARITY is *definitely worth a buy. It may be 10 years old at the time of this review, but it does hold up quite well. Lacks a bit of polish, but a true gamer won't be hindered by that.

The closest thing that I can compare this game to is Bioshock, Russian-style. Instead of dealing with slugs and little girls, you're dealing with time-tech. That being said, there are moments where I feel like I'm briefly in Resident Evil, or the new Doom, and while this certainly does not stand up to the new latter game (in regards to pacing at least), it's a passion-child of it's makers. There are so many moments that I can see that the developers put these little touches on things that make me laugh and grin, like when I jumped on top of an old movie projector and the rotating wheel actually kicked me off of it.
Aside from weird geometry issues, there are only two complaints: ammo and health are OVERLY abundant. I mean, I'm literally swimming in the stuff. And secondly, when you encounter the gun upgrader, you can swap out your weapons for whichever ones you prefer - however, this is not made clear very well.
Those two things aside, I will say that this is a game that is still fantastic, provided that you want an interesting single player experience, enjoy reading notes and listening to the audio cassettes that people decided to lug around and leave behind when they inevitably died.

Pro
-Gameplay (controls are tight weapons choice is decent)
-TMD (you will find out as you play the game)
-Horror elements to the story
-Story is good
-Graphics Still look solid even today (look at the water effects on the opening scene)
-Sound (weapons are punchy and feel like they have the appropriate amount of kick good voice acting)
-Unique setting of late 50's early 60's cold war
Cons
-Short ( 6 to 7 hours maybe)
-NOT ENOUGH TMD!
Overall there really isnt to much to complain about game wise other than the games length everything is really solid 8/10. I will say buy this game if you want to remind Activision that people will buy GOOD single player games.

could ever pass this game up. Game is about 7 hours long. Good story. Fun weapons. Only thing that's bad about this game is that there is no New Game Plus. It was almost perfect for me, but just that.

You enter on a mission with a party of soldiers, to uncover the secrets of an island overtaken by Russian government. You will quickly uncover secrets of the island, including an element native to the land. An element that powers time travel and time manipulation, among other devices and tools. While time manipulation may seem like a problem in and of itself, it also caused mutations exacerbated by excessive experiment. You'll experience unintentional time travel, moments of schizophrenia, and moments that could only be described as a mixture of science-fiction and the paranormal. Your survival seems like the major concern, but you'll soon learn that there are lives that must be saved, and you may be the only person to stop it, due to being the wielder of the Time Manipulation Device (TMD) strapped to your wrist. As you embark on this mission, you'll need to explore for secret collectibles and hidden upgrades for your weapons and TMD.
If you think things can't get any crazier, then you'll just have to play it for yourself, and see what craziness this game has to offer, in one of Raven Software's wildest, and most intense games.

Gunplay is decent, nothing outstanding.
The time control mechanics are a bit gimmicky.
Graphics options are pretty barebones. FoV can only be modified through third-party tools and is otherwise locked to 65. FPS is limited to 120 and a lot of graphical effects aren't in the options menu.
Characters are boring and uninteresting.
The audio-logs scattered around the game are really out of place and seem like a forced way of explaining environmental storytelling or adding pointless details to the plot.
I was at least pleasantly surprised by the endings. They start off as a generic CoD-style quicktime event where you gotta shoot the bad guy, but then you get an interesting choice between 3 endings. The good ending was pretty forced, but the other 2 were pretty nice.

It's a relatively linear game, though of course you have rooms to explore for ammo, logs, and whatnot here and there. And there's also some puzzles occasionally which involve the usage of your powers in the game.
Your powers are primarily time-based, though you do get a gravity-related one, and the focus of the game is on multiple realities (or splits in time). Throughout the game, you get the ability to age objects (or even enemies), or revert them into a younger/more stable state, as well as lift objects in the air, send blasts of energy, slow things within a defined space, and move things between dimensions.
You even get some cool weaponry with the sci-fi high-tech setting of the game, such as a rifle which lets you control the bullet as it flies through the air. You can readjust it as it moves in slow-motion and lead it right into enemies for instant kills (at least for most of them).
The story of the game starts when you are part of a team investigating an island, once owned by the Soviet Union, that generates a large enough electromagnetic pulse to damage some American military technology. Upon the island, you find secret labs and eventually get into the world of time manipulation. The island is very dark and creepy, as you encounter bizarre distorted creatures which seem to have been humans in the past, and once you get some of the time manipulation powers, you end up making portals between your present timeline and the 1950s, thereby causes things to go awry.
While Singularity is relatively short, I find its gameplay as a shooter very fun, and I think the general setting and story setup is interesting. Some of the story scenes are just great, and you can definitely feel tension as the conflicts arise. All in all, it's a little-known game that is definitely worth a try.
