An absolute classic, I had already played it on the C64 and AMIGA. BUT WITH JOYSTICK, as it was still called back then.
a game that was released for the xbox, where you have to fence AND dance, and that doesn't even have controller support. no way.

Sid Meier´s PIRATES - der Klassiker aus meiner Jugend: Als 15-jähriger auf dem Commodore Amiga 500 gegrinded - auch heute noch ein seltener Spaß in gefühlt VGA - Grafik. Bedienung einfach und sehr intuitiv. Viel Spaß in der karibischen See mit jedoch nach einiger Zeit immer gleichem Ablauf... Sehr schön zum Zeitvertreib und für Fans ein Muss - hat jedoch nicht mehr den Glanz der 90er Jahre, als dieses Spiel neu auf den Markt kam.

An absolute classic! I grew up playing this game on the family computer, and while I never got particularly far, young-me loved this game, and I still do! The somewhat-poorly-aged graphics are easily accounted for by the game's snappy and fast-paced action, charming visual style, surprisingly interesting story, and the beauty of travelling across the ocean that this game so perfectly captures. If it seems interesting, I say go for it! It's certainly cheap enough to warrant at least a try.

Jo ho für das Piratenleben. Schiffe Entern, Gold Rauben, seine verschleppte Familie Stück für Stück befreien, um Gouverneur's Töchter Werben (hässliche wie hübsche, kommt auf die eigenen Standards an) verschollene Städte und Schätze suchen. Es ist älter (15 Jahre für dieses Remake, das Orginal ist noch vieel älter), aber macht es Laune ohne sich großartig rein finden zu müssen. Einen Tip am Rande, kauft lieber die Version von Good old Games, Steam hat leider die Eigenschaft alte Spiele einfach nur unbehandelt auf die Plattform zu werfen, aus dem Grund bekommt man hier einen DirectX Fehler unter Windows 10, auf GoG lief es ohne selber Hand anlegen zu müssen. Bei der letzt genannten Plattform gibt es auch ohne große Umwege die Anleitungen und Referenzkarten ohne große Umwege direkt dazu.

Twenty years ago, this was one of my favorite games. I spent hundreds of hours playing it, and would have recommended it without reservation to anyone who likes pirate games.
Now, though? It's a Windows 95/98 game, trying to run under Steam/Windows 10. Needless to say, the odds of getting it to run AT ALL are slim enough to slide under a door. If you CAN get it to run, it's still as fun as it ever was, but that's IF you can get it to run.
If an enhanced edition is ever created, I'll be at the head of the line to try it.

Played this to death back in the day (before Steam). It still holds up to the test of time, plenty to do and fun to be had.

I find this game fun. The dancing people (maybe men?) complain about is ridiculously easy if you listen to the music and follow the beat. Sailing around hunting for targets is more difficult, but the Governors and bar hostesses help. Wooing and fighting for a Governor's daughter is kind of strange for a grandmother in her 70s, but I think of my pirate as one of my grandsons, so I want the best for him. If I get comments, I hope they are kind.

Still the best pirate game out there. Until this gets either a respectful remake from the ground up, or Ubisoft gets is affairs in order and make a pirate game that isn't under any of their major franchises, this is still the top sea dog.

For all its faults, the freedom that Sid Meier's Pirates! provides under its soft time restrictions is what makes it a fun challenge. The story itself is simple: you're a kid whose family gets kidnapped by a big bad, and years later, you grow up to find yourself sailing on a pirate ship to find them and take rightful vengeance on the man who wronged your family... or not. You could entirely ignore that quest and create your own legend. Beat every famous pirate, find their buried treasure, board or sink as many ships as you like, find lost civilizations, make a ton of money off the competing nations' wars as a privateer playing every side, ransack cities across the Caribbean, woo a governor's daughter. Any or all of those plus finding your family, if you're capable. Not a lot of pirate games out there let you do what this game does.

The soft time restriction I mentioned is in managing two closely tied factors: age and health. As years pass at sea, you're liable to get all sorts of injuries whenever you get into fights, and the older you get, the harder it is to engage in those sword fights. And at some point, you can even get to an age where you *have* to retire as a pirate. That said, depending on your chosen difficulty and specialization, you can set yourself up to be able to do as much as you want in the time you have, and seeing how far you can go and how much you can do is part of the challenge that not a lot of games these days want to hand to their players.

On top of that, there's also managing crew morale, but as long as you're not at a point where your crew is mutinously angry at you, you'll basically be just fine. And even if you do wanna see what a mutiny's like, that's just added challenge. Get yourself marooned, get your booty and your ship stolen and see how well you can recover. Even failure adds a layer of depth and challenge to this game. But on keeping your crew happy, it's a matter of how much money you've got that'll be split among you and your crew and how long you've been at sea, so you'll want your time spent in between splitting booty to be profitable. That means engaging in everything that makes money, most of which involves a lot of naval combat, which moves us onto...

Well, the naval combat, of course. What right would any game have to call itself a pirate game without it? And boy, is the naval combat in this game a great time. Upgrades to your ship, the kind of ammo you have, the type of ship you're manning and what you're fighting, as well as your position on the field relative to the wind direction all add up to a naval combat system that, while still ultimately simple to learn and navigate, has TONS more depth and challenge than even AC:4 Black Flag ever did. Of all this game's mechanics (of which there are many, from the sword fights, the janky stealth, turn-based army battles, to even a goddamn dancing minigame), this is the one that aged like wine the most.

All the freedom to screw around in the Caribbean in a pimped up galleon with a cartoon-y art style that serves the theme of a swashbuckling E for Everyone pirate adventure, without the Assassin's Creed bugs and tailing missions, without the always-online garbage, without any overpriced DLC. Come on, man. Tons of great games from Sid Meier's Pirates!'s era are getting harder to come by, let alone get working on a modern system. Other than lacking widescreen and not being able to alt+tab, a game of this age with quality that's held up for this long, in a genre that is utterly barren of titles that can hold a candle to it, I don't see why I wouldn't recommend this game for people to play today.

When I was 8 or 9, my brothers and I had to stay with my cousins for a week while my mother was recovering from surgery. While I was there, I spent 10+ hours a day playing this game on my cousin's old desktop, absolutely enamored to the extent that I would often refuse to leave, even to eat or sleep.
I became feared in both the game and my aunt's house alike -- heaven help the fool who tried to get in the way of my insatiable need to devour as much treasure as possible. My war galleon would not be swayed from its mission, and neither would I, even when cousins tried to drag me kicking and screaming to eat a real meal instead of the leftover fudge from Christmas and underripe bananas that I had been subsisting on in my cave.

Eventually, we returned home, and I mourned the loss of my pirating career. No game ever lived up to it, not even my once-beloved LEGO® Star Wars or Zoo Tycoon, and even years later when I'd forgotten its name, it still lived on in my memories.

I found it again on Steam a few years ago after a few very lucky searches. Since then, it has lived on in my wishlist, waiting for the day when I finally have a windows PC instead of a school-issued Macbook on which I could play it again in all its glory,

My friends, that time has come. I am in college now, and I can make my own financial decisions, and I decided to spend 10$ on a nearly 20-year-old game. It was worth every penny. Do yourself a favor and buy this game -- I promise, it's everything I remember, and more.

This is the best non sports game I have ever played! While I played Mario as a youngster, I have stuck with sports games since then, until a friend turned me on to this gem. I highly recommend this my biggest issue is I cannot find a replacement for the original manual that my exwife burned because she is evil

This is by far the absolute best Pirate game ever created. The biggest downside is that the game is quite dated at this point. I've logged hundreds of hours into this game over the years (don't let my steam fool you, I had this on CD long before). If you like pirate themed games, snatch this up when you can.

I don't always long for a remake but when I do, it never gets considered .... oof. I would kill for a remastered version of this game or a Sid Meier's Pirates! 2.

Though Sid Meier's Pirates is one of my favorite childhood games, it's not just a sense of nostalgia that makes this game great. Sure it might have some bugs, and travelling east against the wind is often a slog, but those are small potatoes compared to the sense of adventure you get when setting out towards new waters, the thrill of battle (okay those can kind of grind to a halt too, but only if your ship is *really* damaged and low on crew), and the satisfaction of plundering ships, conquering cities, and uncovering buried treasure.

The story element of having a lost family to search for is a nice emotional touch, and between that, your ability to [strike]simp[/strike] I mean privateer for your favorite nation, or just plunder any and everyone to your heart's desire, there's something for anyone to do.

If you love the romance of pirate legends, you're sure to sink as many hours into this game as you do ships within it.

Nostalgia factor on maximum, this is one of my favorite games of all time. Still have my original disk copy as well. The game will run on your average smart fridge and all these years later it is still an enjoyable game to play.

One of my earliest memories is playing this game with my older cousin. I had thought about it from time to time but I could not figure out at all which game it was. Stambled upon a Let's play series about it on yt and bought it immediately.
It is lacking in comparison to modern games but it was a great nostalgia trip.

A nearly 20 year old remake of an over 30 year old game that somehow still holds up.

To call this old would be an understatement, but to call it less than a classic would be insulting. There's very few games from the 1980's that are still relevant today as anything but a distant memory. Yet Pirates isn't just remembered, it's still played.

A single-player open world sailing game where you plunder your way through the Caribbean with only the vague goal of reuniting with your long lost family; but you have your entire life to do so and no pressure other than your own whims. From age 18 until you die of old age you can pirate your way to fortune and fame with ever changing loyalty, gaining ranks with various nations, switching sides as often as you want. Privateer one day, pirate the next and shaping the political balance and ownership of the various cities and towns you visit along the way.

Functionally the various parts of the game are compartmentalized as individual mini-games. Sword fighting against other captains, dancing with the mayor's daughter, taking a raiding party onto land, etc. Each on their own might be considered a bit shallow but taken as a whole you have a variety of things to do that give you just a casual fun world to live in while you plunder away for as long as you desire.

The game also uses your crews greed and boredom as a way to balance out your potential power. No matter how rich and prosperous you grow your crew will eventually want to split the spoils and disband. You keep your flagship, sell off the rest of your fleet and walk away with your share to start another crew. You keep your titles and various special items along with any quest progress. But if you want to say, invade a city you'll need to do that while your crew is large and not while you're in a rebuilding phase and setting up for your next round of adventures. Anyway it keeps the game from getting stale while you slowly make progress towards finding your family. (unless you just ignore the main quest and live out your life at sea)

The controls can take some getting used to, but once you do the timing and simplicity of it becomes second nature. There definitely comes a point where you master the game and it becomes repetitious, but the journey to get there is fun and nostalgic.

You could list modern games with more complexity, but very few with as much charm or the right balance of simple yet deep as to invite you to come back and play it again every few years for the rest of your life.

Bottom line: It could use a remaster to modernize the resolution options and polish off the rough edges, but game play wise this still has a lot of value.

There is only one way to describe this game. PIRATES! being based off the 1987 Pirates! this game is amazing in everyway possible (kind of) the treasure hunting is cool the dancing is cool the battles and dueling are all COOL. though some flaws do show through the cracks this game is great and i highly reccomend it. (though i forgot to mention the careers which you can get after retiring those are cool as well)

The graphics feel quite dated at this point but this still remains to be quite possibly the greatest pirate sim of all time. It has a story but honestly you'll lose yourself in the piracy sandbox! If they were to release a modern remake of this that would be amazing!

Honestly one of the best pirate games out there, the dated graphics show on land but you are hardly on it.

Classic. Yes, you can win nearly every sword battle by spamming the 4 key. Yes, you can beat the game using only the Indian war canoe. I have maxed out the game dozens of times, but I still keep coming back for more.

Pirating around on the Caribbean is great fun, but the main quest slows to a crawl and you're going to have to play the more tedious minigames to finish. I didn't bother this time around.

By far the best ship is the Indian War Canoe because it can sail against wind and with it you'll just board everyone in seconds and instawin the fencing match. It's really easy, at least before 'Rogue' difficulty and with items.

Still the quintessential pirate game from Sid Meier's. Does have some issues with crashing if you alt-tab, but I have yet to find another game that plays like Sid Meier's Pirates.

Played this when it first came out ages ago! Floppy disks were a thing just like a phone attached to the wall. The mastery of Sid was on display even way back when. The great elements the open world feeling. I like the new version its like visiting an old friend but they are more refined.

I have been playing this game for years, and still enjoy it very much. Does not require you to be a teenager, I'm pushing 80 years old. no need to read the small print and in a hurry, the game just flows along at tiur speed. My problem is I can't keep going using Steam it freezes up and stays that way. I played it yesterday but today I can't access it again.

Sid Meier's Pirates need a newer version of updates. like high definition updates, full widescreen support for all resolution, and patches for bugs fixed. also maybe achievement and Steam workshop.

Best Pirates game of all time. Nothing will ever compare, though they may try. For the best, old-school Spanish-fighting Pirate battles in all their Glory, look no further than Pirates! by the incomparable Sid Meier, whose games I've been playing since X-COM: UFO Defense to F-15 Strike Eagle, Sid will always hold a special place in our hearts.

I grew up playing this game with my dad. I was thrilled to find it last summer on sale. It brings back so many nostalgic memories. The graphics are absolutely dated and the controls are really wacky, yet its still so much fun.

This was one of my favorite games as a child, I remember having the CD copy my grandpa gave me so I could play on my moms computer. As a kid I didn't worry about getting a high fame level, being frustrated with the dance sections, and hating the romance aspect. All I did was find the biggest ship I could, put as many guns on it as possible, then hoarding gold like its, well, gold. Maybe it's nostaglia, but I love this game, really wish it had a HD remaster or a full on sequel. Highly recommend this game.

If there was ever a game desperate for a remake it's Sid Meier's: Pirates!

Pirates! came out before Johnny Depp made pirates cool. And if the name Sid Meier scares you off due to his much more complex titles in Alpha Centuari and Civilization; fear not. Pirates is a much more whimsical, open adventure game.

I don't like to use the term genre-defying much, but I really don't know how to describe this game otherwise. You do have real time ship-to-combat, a 'kind of quick-time' sword fights, and some turn based tactical combat, all on top of a grand role playing adventure. The main objective is to find and rescue your family. You start out with a small ship and crew, and by finding buried treasure, attacking other vessels, even buying and selling goods, you become rich and powerful enough to take on the man who stole your family. There stats the track how many famous pirates you've killed, which treasures you've dug up, which Incan Ruins you've found, what ship upgrades you've found, what Princess you're courting (you can have a girl in every port if you play your cards right) and on and on to 100% completion.
Of all these the ship combat is probably the funnest. There's something about landing a full broadside on another ship that just never gets old, particularly the screams of the fleeing passengers as they jump ship. The sword combat is very simple and the dancing mini-game may have you tearing your hair out. Arguably it's the treasure hunting in Mexico that is probably the most frustrating, as it is very repetitious on harder difficulties.
Still, I can forgive Pirates! for delivering a unique experience that no game has come close to emulating, with the very imperfect exception being Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. Until a game comes out the replicates the charm and wit of Pirates!, this will always be my go-to Pirate adventure game.

The game is old but it still has value. I am going to replay it to see if there are any updates. The graphics were great the last time I played it. The story line was great. The music was top notch. Used to play it on the Wii when I was a kid. Playing it now, I can actually perceive how the game works and it's an entirely different experience. A bit repetitive but is designed the way pirate game SHOULD be designed.

If you loved the original release from the previous century, this later edition does not disappoint. Retains the charm of the original while adding new content such as new ships, ship upgrades, new personal equipment for your character, expanded romance and treasure hunting, and more.

Literally one of the best historical pirate games I've ever played in my life. My box copy came with a physical map of all the cities, and I have yet to find a source that has taught me more about this time period than Pirates! It's really an educational game that you don't realize will teach you something (I say this as a college student.)

It's just pure fun, ranging from the naval battles to the Turn-based city sieges. Want to conquer the entire Caribbean in the name of The Greedy Dutch? Go for it! Want to be a privateer and sell your services to the highest bidder? By all means! Do you want to peacefully trade and become super rich off leveraging the market? Nobody's gonna say no!

An awesome game and I can't recommend it enough.

It is an old but fun game, ıt aged well the one problem I have with this game is how easy the apprentice difficulty is. It literally plays the game for you so even if it seems hard getting in combat with higher difficulty levels it is the right and fun way to play this game. I recommend it to players who have the right expectations from a 2005 game and for those who like being a pirate.

You start your journey as an 8 year old boy during a banquet with your family - but little did you know that you would have an unexpected and very much unpleasant visitor - Marquis de le Montleban! With your property seized and your dynasty kidnapped, you flee and become a pauper.
10 years later and you are signing up as a pirate to ye olde' Americas to avenge and rescue your family!

Seriously tho, this was and still is an outstandingly good game despite how old it is - it was made 2 years before I was born. The graphics certainly are not the best however this game must be unrivaled for its time. The entire ocean is full of surprises and bursting with opportunities to plunder and pillage as much as your dirty little heart desires!

Conclusion: This is still a great game and a remastered version is desperately needed and would be an instant hit!

This game is an absolute classic. One I've been playing since the early days on the Commodore 64.

While I still enjoy this version a great deal, it's clearly in badly need of a refresh as it's unreliable on modern systems (crashes, mouse cursor and selection box getting out of sync, limited to 4:3 resolutions).

If they ever release a new version it'll be an instant buy, in the mean time I'll keep revisiting this every now and then.

A nice slice of childhood nostalgia. And it's a Sid Meier game, so you know the gameplay loop is solid.

The port works well--at least on my end. No lag or bugs, though I did have to get used to ship navigation all over again. Sword fights are actually tough on certain levels!

This really is a great life sim with RPG elements--a combination that's still hard to find, going on fifteen years later. You can avenge your family, become a merchant prince or a merciless pirate, fight 10 historical pirate lords, marry a governor's daughter, and help the Dutch take over the Carribean.

Magnificent.

you have a ship and you need to avenge your family but not really, target down spanish and french vessels till you have 10,000 bounty then marry one of the french governers daughter.

I quit this game after becoming marquis but then getting stranded with a bunch of Spanish ships and low crew, then I lost my frigate and only had a Treasure Galleon. Cried and quit forever. I think it's funny to say it's historically accurate which some article did, because for one- the fighting is swinging from ropes and shit, while in reality they'd probably shank you in the ribs, kick your dead body, impale you, and dump you in the ocean. But yeah, pretty fun while unbalanced game considering all you have to do to get good is just spam slash in duels- seriously, I took blackbeard's ship within the first 20 minutes.
