https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2010573756

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is a detective mystery game starring the iconic detective. Him and Watson will solve 6 unrelated cases, although the story has an overarching plot, it is almost unmentioned in the 6 cases, some which are adaptations from the Sherlock books. Gameplay-wise, the user interface is simpler and more modern, being reused in the sequel The Devil's Daughter and a major improvement from Testament.

Gameplay-wise its very similar to TDD, with open areas you can revisit while collecting clues, ability to deduce multiple suspects & dealing with them, and of course, puzzles. The puzzles are quite easy, but can be skipped, especially useful during those annoying lockpick puzzles. Don't skip them all, though, since puzzles play a pretty big part in the game, and you need to complete 45 to get an achievement, but there's plenty more. You can also disguise your Sherlock, but most disguises are for use in story-related events and most of the time you can only change the color of your suit.

Personally this is my favorite Sherlock game. It has beautifully designed levels, such as an ancient Roman bathhouse and a botanical garden. The 6 cases have proper length, none too short, but some can be a bit longer than the others. The graphics look realistic while still a bit stylized, and the performance is stable. I would be greedy if I say I wish this game was longer, as I was thoroughly enjoying it. The only bad thing about this game is the lack of manual saves, but travelling to a new area always triggers an autosave and you can freely load previous saves as long as its in the same case. While I'm not a big fan of allowing wrong deductions happen, at least here you can check your conclusion was right or not and replay.

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is a very good detective mystery game, and probably even the best one I ever played so far. If you're a fan of those types of games, or looking for one similar to a point-and-click mystery game but 3D, you should give the Sherlock games a try. And if you're already a fan of the character, either from the books, movies, or series, you should give the games a try.

Graphics might not be that great but damn the game sure has beautiful sceneries.
Various good cases like murder, theft etc
Choices do matter you can come to wrong conclusions if you don't properly deduct ending up sentencing the wrong person.
I had the first one wrong but after you get a hang of it the game becomes really easy even the puzzles become easier.
Movements felt sluggish but that's fine but the damn Watson would always block the path and not move that was too frustrating.

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments was a nice evening entertainment for my wife and me.

Solving the six cases in this game is really more entertaining than it's challenging though. The only case I found rather difficult was the very first one: All three suspects had a strong motive in my opinion. The game is pretty linear: You solve each case one after another and your ingame note book does quite a good job at reminding you of any open leads and outstanding research that has to be done.

So if you're looking for hard puzzles to solve, this game might not be it. If you can settle with a rather casual experience and interesting detective stories, this game is great.

It is a game that I see as the second best game in the Sherlock series.

The plot of the story and the progression of events are extremely catchy. Each case makes your decision-making more difficult. But the part that makes the game enjoyable is exactly here.

As I said, if you like Sherlock games, I say buy this game, otherwise I wouldn't want you to return this game because it doesn't suit your game taste.

Pros
+ Complex deductions where it requires you to really take note of everything in your mind because not everything is listed in the evidence for you
+ Multiple endings just to see whether you got your conclusions right and what morality you decided to shape Holmes into
+ Graphics are a huge improvement
+ Controls are super easy
+ Observation really is key
+ The return of a really good boi
+ Instead of one huge mystery, you got 6 cases to solve
+ The occasional humour between Holmes and Watson is welcomed
+ References to previous games based on chronology
+ Puzzles are a lot easier to solve this time to the point I didn't need a walkthrough
+ It's a Sherlock Holmes game!

Cons
- I don't know why the game crashes once in a while. It's a good thing checkpoints are there to back you up
- I feel that there are not enough puzzles that I was so used to in the older games. Nemesis, Ripper, and Testament had the perfect balance of it though they maybe a bit more puzzle based
- Although there are 6 cases to solve, I find that some of them feels too short (can't be helped when you got 6 cases) and the later half of them are too obvious and easy to solve
- Some puzzles could be a bit more challenging but I supposed that the difficulty went to the deductions and morality choice

+ Great cases
+ Great puzzles that are varied in style
+ Hours worth of game time

- The only issue that I have found is the game has a tendency to lag causing it to become unplayable meaning you are required to come stop the game and restart it.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this game, especially if you are interested in the crime-fiction genre. The only thing that stopped this game from getting a 10 was it's frequent lagging, which if you play for fewer hours shouldn't affect you so much.

Not a terrible game, just bland.

For me Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments is not a detective or puzzle game but just a point & click simulator totally controlled by Sherlock himself (not you, you are just a puppet). It holds player's hands so hard that there is almost no joy or freedom during the searching of clues. In this game, the hard part is not figuring out what to do but what the game wants you to do. Sometimes when I found evidences, the game simply won't allow me to ask the suspects about them, no matter how obvious those evidences are. Even after I already understood the case pretty clearly and more or less solved it in my head, I still had to make many particular moves to unlock new dialogues, locations and deductions, otherwise the game just won't let me proceed, which makes no sense. It also forces player to use some kind of supernatural detective mode to discover important invisible information, which is just annoying. Last but not least, in this game player needs to get to locations back and forth quite frequently, and the loading is just unbelievably slow.

After playing it for 2 hours, I felt nothing but pure vapidity.

Though it's got some seriously rough edges, Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is a faithful and entertaining romp through the adventures of the world's greatest detective.

Talking about the game's premise and story can feel a little bare-bones, strangely enough. Though Crimes and Punishments does technically have a recurring, central narrative, the gist of the game is mostly straightforward: the player assumes the role of the titular detective and solves their way through six separate mysteries. The mysteries are excellent and will see you doing everything from tracking down a ghost train in the English countryside to hunting through ancient Roman ruins for lost treasures, but in aggregate, the game's episodic nature can make summary feel sparse. That's not a mark against the title though; like the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories, the extremely segmented nature of the experience keeps the novelty of each case fresh and prevents any familiar tedium from slipping in. The novelty of these cases is also helped by the excellent voice work and animation which, although not especially noteworthy in the case of the latter, sells the varied and charming characters effectively enough.

Like the cases themselves, the actual act of investigation tends to be extremely varied, and this is to the game's benefit. In any given mystery, you'll find yourself pursuing clues in the usual, observational ways, but other clues require a slew of surprising mini-games to unlock. (I won't lie - when you first get to play as Sherlock's hound, Toby, I let a delighted and frankly embarrassing noise.) Most of these are excellent, but these minigames often represent the game's weakest components, too, with finicky controls or arbitrary skill gates. Crimes and Punishments lets you skip these segments if they wear on too long, but that can often feel like a concession to poor design.

Really, well-aged visual presentation aside, the game's biggest strength is the deduction mechanic. See, the game allows players to connect the dots themselves, weighing the value of different clues to reach different logical ends. It can be a little hand-hold-y, but the willingness to let the player arrive at the wrong conclusion for each adventure or to miscalculate various information is actually really welcome; it keeps the overall experience of solving these crimes from feeling too railroaded.

The game isn't without significant problems, though; oftentimes, the game assumes the player to make very specific logical leaps that are not necessarily well sign-posted. The second and third cases were especially bad about this, although I'll concede it might just be that I overlooked crucial subtext to various clues - a forgivable side-effect of empowering the player to more effectively play detective. The other problem, and this is by no means a deal-breaker, is the writing can sometimes feel more interested in the granularity of its crimes than any big observations. Even the title, Crimes and Punishments, feels like it was chosen after-the-fact. (The game attempts to justify this in the late game with some reveals and allowing Mycroft to quote the Dostoevsky novel; the former attempt feels rushed and unfocused, while the latter is shot in the foot by making Sherlock's brother quote [i[Raskolnikov[/i] of all characters.)

Nevertheless, lack of thematic focus notwithstanding, Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is honestly quite enjoyable, especially for mystery junkies like myself. The $30 pricetag feels steep for a 2014 game, which makes me want to recommend waiting for a sale rather than buying it at full price, but for a mid-tier production, it's aged wonderfully. If you've got a hankering for a bit of mystery in your games, you might consider stepping down these Victorian backstreets with spyglass in hand.

I loved this game. It feels so much more fun than the previous one. Solving cases one by one is a good idea: it allows for playing in segments like a session per case.
Voice acting is good but sometimes I found it out of place for some reason. Like, some cringy intonations or wrong emphasis on words. I dunno: it just felt weird :D Anyway I loved it. Man, Sherlock is being voice by a guy that voiced Rufus in Deponia!
Holy Baker Street!!!
Unfortunately, I also felt that the actor puts much less effort than into Rufus, but it's subjective.

New gameplay mechanics are all easy to follow up and fun to exercise.
This game should be considered a fun casual detective adventure with some interesting puzzles.

After solving a case you're presented with a choice: let the criminal go somehow or punish him. Then a cutscene plays out. It's all really cool - right after you get to see how much people chose what. Pretty interesting to see where you ,might go against the crowd.

I recommend playing this game if you miss quests, love being Sherlock Holmes and are ok with not-so-hard puzzles. Have fun!

Summary

The Sherlock Holmes series is one of my favorite detective game series (not like there's a lot of them anyway).

This one does lack the eye candy of the newer games, but still manages to look decent.

Cases are interesting and do not always end in the way you thought they would, on the other hand, making the final decision was usually very simple in my opinion, once you gathered all the evidence.

I did appreciate that all the puzzles (except for one), can be skipped. So, if you are in just for the detective part you won't have to worry about puzzles.

I really liked the moral choices, where you could let the suspect go or have him sent to jail, also there being a unique cutscene/dialog for all of these options.

Few words about the gameplay, it is a detective game, there is not much action gameplay, most of the time you collect evidence, talk to suspects and solve puzzles or react to quick time events, do not expect chasing criminals with revolver in hand.

The difficulty part is very individual, and I bet the game would be a lot more frustrating and less enjoyable if it was any harder, but I found it sometimes maybe too easy. Most of the suspects tend to talk only about things relevant to the case and also all the evidence you find does have something to do with the case, it does make sense a bit since you are a Sherlock Holmes anyway. There is no way to fail a dialog option/confrontation with a suspect, if you fail, it will just give you another try until you get it right.

Playtime: Around 10 hours

Achievements: Can be done in single playthrough (make sure to do A Complex Mind achievement, otherwise you will have to rerun the whole game)

Overall: 9/10

Very good game. Bought it basically just because I was bored and stumbled upon a 80% Frogwares sale so I bought Crimes and Punishments. Before I even finished the first case I immediately went to Steam Store and used the sale to buy 3 more Sherlock Holmes games from them plus The Sinking City (didn' buy that one on Steam ;) ).

I heard about these games throughout the years and never got around to try them and it was a big mistake. So many games give you the illusion of choice while always secretly pointing you towards a single possible resolution. Not this game. You actually have to listen what people say, form conclusions based on your own theories without the game leading your hand and then you have to actually decide who did it and sometimes even specify how. Many cases have a lot of different endings with you having the final say on the punishment to be executed, whether the suspect was rightully accused, or not... A breath of fresh air.

There are some problems, though and all of mine were technical. First of all, while the game natively supports 21:9 resolution, it switches to 16:9 in cutscenes, not a big deal HOWEVER there was a one activity where you had to scrub dirt from a wall and it never seemed to recognize all of the dirt being cleaned. I assume this was because a 16:9 rectangle of dirt was generated with invisible parts above and below my screen. You can luckily skip any activities so it was fine, just keep that in mind. Same thing with some body inspections, where for instance half of a persons head is not on screen and you have to click the top of the head. The clickable zones are big enough for you to click them but are at the very edges of your screen.

There are some issues even for 16:9 users. Some clickable areas are misaligned with their respectable items. There are a couple of quick time events one very important one where the clickable zone was just WAY of the area you'd expect it to be at. Also, I got hard-locked in the last case because of a bug. I was following 2 different leads and going in between them back and forth instead of focusing on one which lead me to have 2 areas of imagination activity in the same zone. One of them would disappear after I finished the other clue. Problem was, the second one didn't want to appear before the first one was completed. No way to proceed further, eventually just restarted the case and did the clues one by one.

Very much reccommended and looking forward to Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One! :)

Genuinely one of the best games I have ever played, I got hooked in from the very first case. The exploration, drawing conclusions, all the different characters and the attention to detail make this game so incredibly enjoyable, I am already replaying it.

I'm a big fan of the morality aspect and the choice you have to make at the end of each case. You don't only decide which of the conclusions you came up with is correct, you also decide how to punish (or let go, if you decide) the presumed suspect.

It definitely is easy but you might still encounter some problems with figuring out how to do certain things.

There is a variety of cases and suspects, so many different motives. Oh, and if you played Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper, look through the telescope for a nice surprise :)

Well I would have given it good marks but like other Sherlock games before, it suffers from clunky parts that just stop you dead from progressing in the game. No spoiler here.. in the statue room I've done literally everything straight from the walk-through guide - multiple guides to be exact - yet the game won't acknowledge this. I've exited the room, come back in, deselected then reselected the statue's buttons, stood everywhere, reloaded from an earlier save. I've followed video of the walkthrough exactly but it just won't progress. This is so frustrating since I put so much time in, was really enjoying the story and it's at least the 2nd sherlock title I've had to abandon. I've been playing adventure games forever (since Zork and Maniac Mansion) and I'm not one of those reviewers who give Negative reviews at all. In fact it's the just the opposite, I probably Like 98% of all games. Plus I love sherlock an especially the rare Detective game. However this is just too much. I don't even care about the money, I'm not seeking a refund. Just for the damn thing to work. And now I'm afraid of playing any other Sherlock game. Don't they play test these things? Worst of all, I've emailed the developer TWICE weeks ago with no reply. They Suck!!!!!

Very interesting, a logical system for deduction and lots of fun. Only a couple of moments where game-play requires agile fingers, which shouldn't be needed in this type of game but can be bypassed. A good long game and plenty of variety in the cases. Recommended!

Even though minutely outdated, this game is good. Good enough to be passed as detective game with the exploration & puzzle elements that aren't that difficult or frustrating as some puzzle games tend to be.

This is an AA game that aged well.

Cons:
- You can see the lack of budget sometimes
- You are not the detective, the game is, you are an observer
- Loading screens. They take seconds with good ssd but still, probably the most loading screens i've seen in a game

Pros:
- Actually interesting stories (most of them)
- Good Sherlock-era atmosphere
- Decent graphics
- You can skip the puzzles you don't like
- A lot of content for the price

Get it if you like Sherlock, I mean there aren't many alternatives to this game tbh.

Very few clues but a hell lot of walking.. I mean I was excausted.. and bored! Scenaries are Top though! Characters also..
I felt more the need to go out instead of playing this through (but that could be a good thing, not..?:D)

This game is a bit difficult to play, honestly. Since there aren't many clear quest objectives, you end up having to wander around the crime scene for long periods of time trying to find pieces of evidence so that you can progress with the investigation. Despite this, the game was still somewhat fun to play, and the graphics weren't too bad.

Recommend – 9.5/10

This game plays like a six part mini-series. Each part is a different case with no real connection to the others. Each case has unique characters, clues, and plot. In addition to what you’d expect a detective based game to have (gathering evidence and interviewing people), there are short mini games that fill in for visualizing a crime scene sequence of events or analyzing evidence for hidden clues.

Pro’s
You can work as hard or as little as you like to figure out what happened. As soon as you’ve made enough deductions to convict someone, you can solve the case. However, there are usually many conclusions you can arrive to given all of the evidence that can be found and your chosen deductions. You must use all of the information from the case and make your final decision and the best thing is that the game has every different conviction ending filled in. It’s not just a passing block of text that tells you what happened. Different convictions in a case can have a dramatic effect on how the end of that case plays out. In addition to making a conviction, you also have a moral choice of arresting or absolving those that you convict. This brings so much replay value to the game as there are many ways the game can play out. On the technical side, the game runs very smooth and bug free, and has a very nice voice cast, visuals, and sound keeping you immersed in the game. Other nice touches were the ability to go back and examine clues, testimonies, and documents, thoroughly, at any time using your notebook.

Con’s
There are very small, nit-picky things that could be improved. Every time you do replay a case, the clues and people’s testimonies will be the same. This allows you to replay the exact same case and make different choices, but the challenge is lost. The other thing was in a couple cases, I knew who I wanted to convict, but I HAD to find one piece of evidence to push the story a little further, before I could perform an experiment that would finally produce that last piece of proof. I kind of wish I could dictate that I wanted to do the experiment and then be told what else I needed in order to perform the test.

Overall
I would recommend this game to anyone that likes detective based games. I have played other detective games out there and this one impressed me a lot. I think that this game should set a new standard for any other games of this genre.

This game is about the cases, obviously. Some are solved by poor guesswork, some you might not solve correctly because you didn't find enough objects to smash your left mouse button on. I'd say 3 out of the 6 cases are great and well thought which kept me guessing till the moment I have to make a decision. A bit stupid to have all the character customizations locked tbh, whats the point of having it there if you have to beat the game first. I like most of the interactive stuff the game offered except the puzzles. Thankfully you can skip that disaster so no problem. Overall for a detective game this is pretty interactive and a must try.

This is a good story-based, detective game, which captures the mood of Sherlock Holmes in the 1800s very well.

The good:
- atmosphere and setting were excellent
- interesting stories
- decent voice acting, nice soundtrack and pleasant graphics
- multiple detecting mechanics used, including finding clues, questioning people, deduction and puzzle-solving, and even using a scent-hound a few times

The not so good:
- the repeating lock puzzle became tiresome due to repetition - could have used some variety
- faces could have used a bit more animation
- the deduction interface was a bit clunky
- Watson has no sense of personal space, and follows you around like a puppy dog, sometimes backing you into a corner from which there is no escape!

Overall, a solid detective game and recommended for fans of the genre.

Crimes and Punishments is the best one in the series. Previous iterations have paid off; Frogwares got hold of lots of interesting mechanics; they were smart to discard the ones that were not good and keep and improve the good ones. The result is a great Sherlock Holmes experience. The short story format plays nice (in the line of the original stories), graphics are really nice and voice acting is good.

From my perspective, it holds your hand too much sometimes, blurring the line between a game and an interactive story. Some of the cases are kind of weird in that conclusion is hardly deterministic which does not go in line with the general tone of the original stories.

All in all, a must for Sherlock Holmes fans. Still not reaching the heights of the Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes :) but a great effort indeed.

A definitely imperfect game with a the occasional dip into strangely hard territory (both in terms of a few action sections, but mostly in terms of finding the right interaction at parts). Graphically fine, but clearly done on a reduced budget. Very limited of music. Characters are well voiced, though you can't expect a huge amount of emotion at play when dealing with a very by-the-books interpretation of Sherlock Holmes. Occasionally the plot makes illogical leaps, but they're generally small. The moral choice system is nice, but like many systems can degenerate into just 'replay the last five minutes three times to see all the different endings' that plagues other games. Performance seemed at times a little bit jumpy, and the loading times between areas often got slightly frustrating, though thankfully you can review notes in the interim.

If you want some classical Sherlock detective-ing, this will scratch the itch nicely, but don't expect something with either a heavy focus on mind-melting puzzles, or a gripping overarching story. 7/10

Always such a pleasure to play.

The most beautiful Sherlock Holmes game compared to The Devil's Daughter (I don't know how to properly tweak the lighting on that one).
Also the one that is easier to understand compared to the first one that I played, being Case of the Silver Earring, with each cases has its own moral choices and dependent on that choice come different endings, too.

Be a man of justice or be a man of compassion.
To condemn the act or absolve it all.
It is all your choice now.
But remember, Sherlock Holmes pursues the truth, not justice.
Evident in Arsene Lupin and Jack the Ripper conclusion.

Be the detective, make your choice, get your ending.
RECOMMENDED MASTERPIECE!

If you love detective games, this might be to your taste. Despite the fact that there are less puzzles in this game and they are too easy compared to its predecessor, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes, this game's strongest suit is the deduction and investigation system. In this game, it is entirely possible to interpret the clues and evidence the wrong way or overlook them, leading the player to come to the incorrect conclusion, thus pinpointing the wrong culprit. Therefore, it is up to you to evaluate the evidence and find the truth using your logical reasoning and observation. However, sometimes there could still be plot holes and red herring, depends on how you view it. The graphics are beautiful, the loading screens consist of Holmes sitting in the cab being pretty, occasionally Toby being a good boy, Watson is a prop. All characters are distinctive, voice acting is good and fit the characters. Interesting game overall.

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments

I have played a couple of Sherlock Holmes games before so I decided to get the Sherlock Holmes bundle during a Steam sale.

I enjoyed the game very much but there is some frustration with the game as well.

First off as expected you are Sherlock Holmes you go around solving crimes with your trusted companion Dr Watson, you take cases that are offered from Inspector Lestrade of Scotland yard.

I like the set up of this game you have your home/base on Baker Street as expected even with Toby the dog and Mrs Hudson, your own room where you can change your looks or get a disguise.

Your home holds your Science equipment and archives needed to solve the crimes so you will be moving back and forth from here, there is even a nice loading screen where you use old horse carriages to move around which is a nice touch (although a weird moment sometimes in this scene where Watson gets a little close to Holmes).

Using the map you can visit other locations like Scotland Yard where you can interrogate suspects check their evidence and there is even a morgue.

The crime scene (This changes every case of course).

Plus other case related areas.

There are a total of six cases that need solving in this game (couple of them are really good).

You collect evidence, speak to suspects and witnesses, examine items and even people to learn more about them and gather clues to come up with conclusions of what causes the murder/accident and how it was done.

There are a number of conclusions to each case each conclusion needs certain evidence and for you to connect them together for example suspect A killed victim with weapon B and if you decide that was how it happened you accept the conclusion and then decide if the person deserves to be punished or not.

You are also shown what other player choices were in that moment (like the Walking Dead games) I love this mechanic you can look to see if you made the right choice at this moment or at the end of the game (it is possible to get a case wrong).

I will admit at times when gathering evidence and coming up with my conclusions I am like hang on where did that come from there isn’t enough evidence or clues and that’s just an assumption and a couple of times one clue lead to the next but I still had an enjoyable time with it.

There are a few mini games and this can be considered the first issue from what I have read online a lot people playing this game found it hard or impossible to complete certain minigames you would follow the instructions and not get the desired result, I am not sure if this is a port over but from what I read console users had an easier time than PC players but they are doable and once you get the hang of it is easy.

I found being slower with your clicks and button pressing helps and for example in the arm wrestling study the opponents face carefully and don’t button mash.

The game has crashed on me a number of times I find after playing the game for so long it suddenly froze then crashed, going through my second play through now to get the last couple of achievements and it has crashed around five times altogether but the game saves quite often and I have never lost much progress.

Watson can get in the way at times when you are walking around but I don't think it is as bad as the other reviews make out.

Game is a few years old but graphics are fine as is the sound.

All the achievements are doable but one of them “A Complex Mind” was a bit of a pain and required me to have a second playthrough to get.

Game has Badges.

I did enjoy my time with this game I would recommend buying it or like myself buy the bundle during a sale!

Toby! The best nose in the British Empire!

Perfect for those who love detective games like LA Noire. Only downside is that the game is a bit old in 2020, this game came out in 2014. One of the easiest CSI games out there, the game is very forgiving when you make mistakes during dialogue. It will carry your hand at times so don't expect a challenge.

When I got this game, I was hoping to be able to make a series of logical deductions as I discovered clues, playing as Sherlock Holmes, to arrive at the solution to the problems, solving puzzles along the way of course. Instead, I’m stuck with the completely illogical “deductions” of a SH character that jumps to conclusions before he has finished gathering the facts and talking to the various people involved. No, breaking into a crime scene does not prove you are guilty of murder. This is not at all true to the “real” Sherlock Holmes character and takes all the fun out of the game. Very disappointing.

It is a strange type of game. Is just a story as the gameplay is not important but I found it very immersive.
The time period is well done and the game focuses on the logic behind the investigations. It is just as interesting as reading some Sherlock Holmes stories so if you like those you will like the game as long as you do not expect anything more then that. I bought it on a discount and was cheaper then the actual books so it was worth it.

In a detective game featuring Sherlock Holmes, the least you'd expect is sound logic, but the correct deductions very often are based on poor logic, sometimes requiring veritable leaps of faith or even disregarding contradictory evidence. Entire cases hinge on stuff that makes little sense. Often you'll find new evidence and will want to ask the suspects about it, but the game won't have accounted for it no matter how obvious an idea it would be, so it won't let you. In my opinion, these are fatal flaws for this kind of game. As more minor annoyances, the controls are bad and movement feels clunky to the point of irritation. And what's the point of the quick-time events? (Good luck with those if you're left handed, by the way, as the game doesn't even allow you to rebind your keys).

It's still entertaining, and a couple of the cases do work well, so you will probably enjoy this if you're a big fan. But ultimately I thought it was disappointing.

“Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments” is a great investigation game. Visit the crime scene, scan for clues, observe details in witnesses and suspects to get background information, question them, then try to combine everything in Sherlock’s virtual mind to come up with a theory. The trick is: there are multiple possibilities, so you might get it wrong if you forget to take into account that one small clue that rules out the wrong suspects.

But even after fingering a suspect, you still get a choice on how to apprehend them. Do you strictly follow the law and convict them, or are you lenient? In other words, referring to the title, does the punishment fit the crime? Do you leave room for extenuating circumstances?

There are six cases in all, and it took me about 21 hours to finish. There are few things that bothered me.

When a case is solved, there’s the possibility to immediately check whether you got it right. If it turns out you’re wrong, there’s the possibility to go back and change your verdict. It would’ve been better in my view not to tempt the player but leave it until the entire game’s end to reveal which cases were solved correctly and which weren’t. I admit I got it wrong several times, and since I crave perfection I did go back to try again. Sometimes I even had to do it twice. That’s how bad I am at deduction, it seems.

The loading times in the carriages were very bothersome. Yes, you can take that time to review your notebook, or you can wait making your deductions until you’re riding, but when you’ve already done that in the heat of the moment, it’s quite boring watching Holmes and Watson sit still for two minutes. And sometimes there’s a lot of going back and forth between locations, having to research stuff in your library, or analyse evidence in your lab. Perhaps it’s possible, but I couldn’t find a way to skip these travelling cinematics.

Every now and then you have to disguise yourself. However, a visit to your wardrobe and make-up table is very slow. You quickly scroll between the possible clothes and fake beards, but the game cannot follow you and only shows them one by one with a serious delay until it comes to your final choice. This probably has to do with my outdated system. Other than that, the graphics are very fluid, which is quite amazing considering all the details in both backgrounds and characters.

During one case Sherlock goes Indiana Jones, exploring an archaeological dig and having to solve true adventure game puzzles, but you also have to traverse a rope bridge. The game has several of these subtle mini-games but this one was hell. I lost count of the times I got a wet suit.

For another case, you have to go “Home Alone” on a handful of bandits, rigging a house with traps. For some reason this just didn’t seem to fit with the seriousness of the rest of the game. And you don’t even get to see what happens to the bad guys. All you get are some distant sound effects.

It was a lot of fun to explore the detailed settings in this game. It’s a complete 3D-world I loved walking around in. I didn’t even use the map in the notebook to get back to the carriage when I wanted to leave a scene, but walked all the way back to where it was parked, taking in the scenery.

I find this game interesting and soothing. I play with my 6 year old son, and we enjoy solving mysteries together. My son wants to be a detective so this is his favourite PC game. There are moments of humour, like taking control of Toby or getting a shock when peering through the telescope!

While I don't have any personal experience about other Sherlock Holmes games I'd say that this must be one of the better ones. There is 6 different cases and it really took me about 20 hours to beat them all and I do know that I missed the right conclusion in one of them. That is the best thing in this game when it does not end your game if you make wrong concluding decision - it gives a tone of unpredictability. However much about everything else in the game is quite hand held and the system gives a lot of clues and over lines wrong possibilities when solving details in cases.

SH: Crimes and Punishments is a very quirky game in this manner when it can feel complex and very simple at the same time. Notes, conversations, clues and observations are all easy to get accessed to at anytime and there is relatively lot of information, but I never needed to waste time in them too much and usually things get cleared out easily and the answers are usually obvious. Same goes with the detective work and that classic point'n'click gameplay where you don't need seek every pixel carefully, but instead game points out when you have found everything in current scenery. Also the different vision filters are highlighted when you need them, which prevents players not to get too frustrated, but on the other hand not too challenged either.

The game's success lies in the extremely interesting, versatile, atmospheric, well voice-acted and twisted cases, which lets a player to be a winner without needing to pull a hair out all the time. Its simplicity is masqueraded in its complexity and I did feel like Sherlock Holmes instead of being Dr. Watson. Crimes and Punishments is a remarkable adventure game which I can recommend merrily for everyone.

Hard to stop once you start. There are multiple endings, so they like you to hypothesize and try to line up the evidence to prove each one- even if you think that you know the solution. I also like the detailed graphics- the programmers knew that the people who'd be interested in this game would look for details and inconsistencies so they made it rich visually. .

The best one in the series I think. The cases are well done, creative, fun and interesting. Puzzles are clever and the mechanics behind them works well. The new engine is such a lift, even tho the controls sometimes feel a bit clunky. In my opinion it also looks beautiful in relation to the budget and the time of release. Holmes apartment finally comes to life and so does the scenes of the investigations. I nice varietety of puzzles, and modes to solve it all makes it a good challenge without feeling just random or far fetched, a trap many other games in the genre falls into. Would love several more just like this!

Next to The Devil's Daughter, Crimes and Punishments is definitely the best Sherlock Holmes game in the entire series thanks to its brisk pacing, multiple cases, and fun, intuitive puzzles. It lacks the vagueness of puzzles, the nonsensical story, and crawl of a pace that was featured in The Testament of Sherlock Holmes. Unfortunately, it also lacks the excellent writing and thrilling cases featured in The Devil's Daughter, though the writing is still strong here.

Overall, I can definitely recommend Crimes and Punishments to mystery aficionados and budding detectives alike.

Clues are there and it's fun to look for them.
The riddles are decent - you have to use your brain to solve them.
It still has action, even though it's a detective game.
You really have a choice inside the game. It's not just a matter of win or fail.
It's exactly what I wanted it to be and more.
Great game.

After playing their newest Sherlock game, The Devil's Daughter, I have decided to try this 1 out to and I gotta say I was not disappointed at all. I really like the concept of you as the player being able to play as Sherlock, this game expects you to be just that, I love puzzle solving games and if you love that to, I would recommend you to play this game. The puzzles are not as hard as the next game but still I find it very entertaining to play. Once again, I finished the game in 2 days just like the previous one because I'm so hooked to this game, I want to know about the plot. Atmosphere is not as creepy as the next game and you find it very hard, you can choose the skip the puzzle. Another amazing aspect of this game I would like to talk about is the multiple conclusions, if you feel that you are satisfied with the conclusion, you can just proceed to the next case. Not to mention, you can check whether you got the right or wrong conclusion, if you feel that you want to have a look on other conclusions, you can always replay the ending and see each outcome. It also tells you how many percentage of people out there who decided to choose the same moral choice as you. It is not wrong to be on the lower side, it just shows your personality as a person and I just like this feature in the game. This game has about 6 cases and each case is entertaining in its own way. Personally, the last case is the one I find most fun to play. I can't wait for them to release another Sherlock game, it's been 4 years since a new one. Overall, amazing game, 9/10.

The best of the Sherlock Holmes games in this franchise. I hope Frogwares returns to this version of Sherlock and Watson in future. Also thumbs up for Toby, the best boy in the whole of the British Empire!

Considering the fact that I have already played devil's daughter and enjoyed it, I find this game very interesting with same awesome deduction system and fairly better game play.

Brilliant game.
I was really surprised by this game.
Impressive graphic, also considering the year this was released, interesting stories, fair puzzles, great characters. Very intuitive, unlike other similar games, and also other S.H. games. *cough* Testament of Sherlock Holmes *cough*
It's way better than the previous one, which I reviewed as well, under every aspect.
If you want a good Sherlock Holmes game, buy this and you'll not regret.

A true masterpiece, one of the best detective games ever, together with L.A Noire. Beautiful Victorian England setting, very detailed environments, exciting detective work true to the original Sherlock Holmes mindset, great music and perfect voice-acting with admirable British accents, and not but not least, a great immersive story overall with nice moral and political choices. The puzzles and mini-games are moderately challenging and quite fun too. Just buy it and play it if you like the genre.
