Über das Spiel
A One-of-a-Kind Cyberpunk Setting: Experience the unique “Tech meets Magic” dystopian future of Shadowrun, a fan-favorite game setting now celebrating it’s 25th anniversary. Shadowrun: Hong Kong is a perfect entry point to the setting for those with no prior Shadowrun experience, while providing plenty of classic Shadowrun characters and tech for veteran players to sink their teeth into.
Command Your Team: Just like Dragonfall, Shadowrun: Hong Kong features a crew of flawed, dangerous runners with backstories that could only be possible in the tech-meets-magic Shadowrun setting. The members of your team are designed to play contrasting roles during missions, and each has a distinct set of skills, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Each team member also has challenges to face in their own lives, which you can choose to brush aside or play an important part in.
Gripping, Turn-Based Tactical Combat: When you’re running the shadows, every turn matters. Choose your actions wisely - move to better cover, charge into melee, or lob a fireball into a crowd of enemies. With over 200 weapons and spells at your disposal, every turn is filled with meaningful choices.
Skill-Based Character Progression: Choose a starting character archetype and build from there! Street Samurai and Physical Adepts use advanced combat skills to dominate the battlefield, Shamans and Mages summon powerful allies and cast deadly spells, while Riggers and Deckers provide critical technological support, projecting their consciousness directly into drones and computer systems. Shadowrun: Hong Kong’s classless skill system allows you to grow your character in any direction you choose.

Doesn't give necessary info on purchases or skills. For example you might be able to choose between one of two abilities for your companions but one of them doesn't tell you the AP cost of the ability. You might want to buy a new drone but it won't tell you what skills the drone has forcing you to buy each of the four one at a time, go into a mission, and then get into a fight to see. You might want to buy a new spell, drone, weapon, etc for a companion but some of those have skill requirements and you can only check your companions skills when going into or during a mission. You also can't change your companion's items until you load into a mission, even though the selection screen before a mission shows you everyone's inventory you can not make changes until the level loads and it brings up the inventory screen again.
There were a lot of bugs in the game back when I played it, I know that some have been fixed, at the time some of the bugs I had that should be fixed now include characters unlocking a new item but the devs forgot to put it in the game, upgrading a characters ability and then that ability disappears, conversation options not working.
It's a well written game with great characters and a great setting whose combat and upgrading mechanics can't quiet match the rest.
I still really enjoyed the game because most of it is just reading and interacting with the world while being able to take non combat focused approaches, but the actual combat gameplay is still poor and so easy that combat is basically just a waste of time that never really makes for a good representation of Shadowrun.

Let's identify immediately the one downgrade: the Matrix. Every incursion is now a real-time arcade/stealth session without stealth mechanics, then a bit of Simon Says, then some other disappointment in the same vein, unchallenging but thoroughly annoying. So much so that I came to ignore obstacles, raise all alarms, then wipe out all defenses in combat. Yet even that proved more tedious than running through detectors and playing only 1 round of each mini-game.
Unfortunately, visiting the Matrix might be more useful than ever.
Everything else is quite similar to the previous opus: narrative structure, good writing, visuals, skills, memorable moments, and so on.
Reviews warning you that verbosity is overdone are correct. Many of you who don't usually skim texts will start skimming here. Or skipping. You'll tailor the game pace to your liking by ignoring some seriously bloated - and not that fascinating - lore dumps. But you'll still want to have a look-see so as to not miss on side-quests and companion quests.
On the plus side, a follow up campaign is included. It acknowledges the ending you chose (or fought to achieve) in the main campaign. The variations alone are quite entertaining, in addition to the missions themselves.
Furthermore, the game depicts a Hong Kong that feels like Hong Kong; or a mix of its past and its future. Great setting, more colourful and compelling than Berlin in my opinion.

Graphics overall are simple yet the small touches and special effects here and there have a nice charm. The death and magic animations stand out as well done yet it looks too simple sometimes.
Music is nice but can get a touch repetitive on longer missions.
There are issues with inventory management (not being able to move things into the slot when you should or items not usable at all for one reason or another), lack of different mission endings and a potential forced reload (bug that has been known on Steam since 2014),
Biggest gripe is the story length. The world building, exposition, and story itself made me think the game was going to be longer than expected. The final boss felt like it should have been the penultimate mission or upscaled in difficulty and placed after a more tough encounter. The remaining plot threads are resolved with a couple of paragraphs. If this final outcome can be altered via different choices or mission results it isn't that clear.
Overall not a bad game. Just feels like it needed a bit more time, budget, or a bit of a rethink about how it plays out. Easily a game to buy at full price if you enjoy this game genre.

There’s a lot of competently written text, mostly one-on-one chats with team members, and myriad ways to complete quests through dialog. I’ve become accustomed to CRPGs that have some amount of voice acting, even if it’s just the first line of a conversation, however this has virtually none. Definitely for people that don’t mind reading for a good chunk of the game.
Most action sequences are turn-based, possibly XCOM (2012) influenced for zones of travel using a turn unit, and an interesting variance of tactics depending on character speciality. Most hacking involves walking through non-real space, a la the Matrix, to traverse in real-time past timed routine guards & defensive entities. Combat uses different powers in cyberspace, otherwise it’ll feel similar to fighting on the streets. Information is extracted via a ‘Simon’ puzzle coupled with a matched sequence of disappearing symbols.
I wish the UI interface wasn’t so clunky. Loading saves, going to new areas, initiating conversations, and looking through menus definitely doesn’t feel ‘snappy’. Their later Unity title, Battletech, has similar problems.
If you want a classic RPG feel, and think the universe is interesting, then I definitely recommend this title -- 7/10.

Should you buy this game?
Yes.
If you like the Shadowrun games or simply looking for a turn-based strategy that has a heavy emphasis on the dialogue, buy this game.
In-Depth Review
Visuals
The game still has the same-looking visuals as its earlier predecessors: buildings full of neon lights, characters in a top-down view, and good-looking portraits will be what you will expect from the game. It also tries to incorporate people from different countries, which are portrayed differently by their facial features. Unlike the first two games, you won't always see big company buildings in your missions - slums and even ships will also be one of your destinations, making you see the other side of the spectrum.
Story
The game has a lot of dialogues at the beginning. You'll have to deal with a lot of unnecessary facts, whether it's news coverage, philosophy, or even history. To be honest, I got overwhelmed by all of them. I'm not someone who can stand reading heavy topics for a long time, and if you have played other Shadowrun games, you'll notice that their dialogue tends to be wordy without leaving any detail out. While I appreciate the approach, I feel that the dialogue can be chunked into tiny bits, especially with how it becomes later on.
There isn't much dialogue nearing the end of the game. Just like Dragonfall (my review), Hong Kong tries to let you bond with your neighbors, whether it's teammates or shop owners. Talking to them between missions will be required to know more about their story. However, the length of their story is kinda weird. There are a lot of topics to talk about at the first two visits, to the point that you have to spend 30+ minutes after a single run. You can even get more dialogues if you talk to a character several times. On the contrary, there aren't new dialogues near the end of the game.
The Game
Gameplay
If you have played other Shadowrun games, the game is basically the same. It's a turn-based strategy with a heavy emphasis on dialogue. You need to take on missions with 2-3 other people and finish the job that was given by your client. The game is more generous on the number of your teammates this time. Instead of having 3+1 teammates like in Dragonfall, you'll have 3+2 teammates, giving you more variations to your team.
You are free to build your character however you want. Just like other Shadowrun games, there are different types of professions in the game. Each character has their pros and cons, and since this game is generous with skill points, you can build your character to be specialized in 2-3 types. One noticeable change from the first two games lies in how rigger, drone user, works. The accuracy for their drone seems to be improved and more drone variations are being sold to the shop. I even wanted to play as a rigger because of it.

The game also gives you freedom in how to finish the missions. There are several ways to reach your objective, whether it's to use your charisma to smooth talk everyone, upgrade your security clearance in the matrix, or even use guns to kill everyone in your way. The latter one is always the easiest, but exploring everything without getting loud will usually give more rewards from the additional exploration. This also adds replayability if you want to play the mission with a different approach.
Money is limited. Unlike the first two games, you don't have a lot of money this time. I even had to save money to buy the best weapon because I know that I won't be able to afford it otherwise. At the end of the day, I still managed to get everything that I need with a little money to spare, but I'm not sure if I could afford the best gear if I play with other builds, especially shaman that requires disposable tokens to play.

Matrix
The other change that the game has lies in the matrix. If you are new to Shadowrun, the matrix is similar to the internet where you can explore and interact with a system, except that your mind will also be transported in the process. Decking, the term that is associated with going into the matrix, is divided into two types: exploration and hacking.
The exploration part requires you to be stealthy, exploring the area without being spotted by Watcher ICs. Being spotted will lead to battle which will increase your trace level, spawning Black ICs that can damage your body in real life after you reach a certain amount. To be honest, I don't like to play a stealth game with a mouse. It's hard to move my character with precision, making it easy to get spotted in a more difficult area. Luckily, the game gives a lot of leeways before your character is spotted by Black ICs. I only experienced it once at the beginning, and it's not even hard to defeat them in the first place.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=779628024
The hacking part is a simple minigame that again, is divided into two parts. The first part is a memorization section where you need to memorize a series of number that is being shown. The second part, on the other hand, is way harder. There will be a series of symbols given at the top screen and you need to find the matching pattern at the bottom. This is my favorite part since it feels like I'm doing something to hack the system.
Length and Difficulty
The game is longer than the first two games. I finished the main game in 41.2h, spending an additional 1.2h to explore all 4 endings. There is also a bonus campaign that gives a little insight into one mystery and a conclusion to you and your team. I finished the bonus campaign in 9.5h, although I had to replay it to get one achievement.
As for the difficulty, the game offers 3 difficulties. I played in easy, and as someone who is bad at strategy games, I find it to be harder than the first two games. Some battles will require you to fight three-way battles while others require you to fight heavy-hitting enemies. Although I never used any items in the first two games, I had to use some revives in the difficult battles to get through.
Conclusion
Shadowrun: Hong Kong tries to blend some elements from the first two games. It has everything that you want from them, whether it's the turn-based strategy or the dialogue branching. I always like to explore my options whenever I played the game, trying to find how others react if I answer differently. Those who aren't familiar with the series might have difficulties understanding the in-game slang, but that can always be fixed with a bit of Googling.

An excellent world, gritty and cyberpunk, with a dystopian core.
The character creation is unique and depthy, the interactions with the world are meaningful, the narrative journey and payoff are both equally enjoyable.

I played the game before this ages ago when it came out and I loved it. Even if the combat can be a bit basic.
Same goes for this game but the combat has been complicated a bit more. More fun traps and what not. Hidden walls and secret stuff. This didn't really feel like an extended edition unless I missed something. Otherwise pretty solid game.

The game is set in a universe where magic and meta humans have come into a technologically advanced world. While I did roll my eyes a bit at that, the game takes itself seriously enough where it doesn't feel goofy or campy. It's played straight and it does create a setting unlike any other fictional world.
The game sets you off with a prologue where you and your adopted brother have to track down your foster father in a cyberpunk / dystopian Hong Kong.
The game plays out like an isometric RPG where your created character and your party moves through confined tile sets be it while traipsing off on missions or when you are back at home base, roaming the central hub out of which you operate.
The art in this game is gorgeous, in parts. I say in parts because majority of the interior tile sets seem very sterile. The art of the city-scape however is jaw dropping. Heoi, which is your central hub city, evokes a feeling which is akin to what commanding the Normandy is like in Mass Effect. The atmospheric rain, the faltering neo signs, the poverty and squalor mixed in with the seedy underworld really sets a vibe of what the life of a shadowrunner could be like.
The in-combat gameplay is similar to XCOM with a tactical, turn-based approach to fighting off enemy forces with you and your merry band of shadowrunners. It's not the strongest part of the game and neither is it difficult. If anything feels like filler to the meat and potatoes, which is the reading.
There is a lot of text to go through as none of the dialogue is voice-acted but the characters, the dialogue and the interactions are top tier. The writing is what elevates this experience and makes it an outstanding game to go through. In my opinion, playing through Shadowrun Hong Kong wouldn't be worth it if it existed without the contextualization through the excellent writing.
The music in the game is excellent and I find myself listening to some the tracks online which isn't too common for me.
There are some negatives as well. The over arching story isn't the best and I think the game could have been paced a little better. Towards the end, the plot points escalate at a rate way quicker than what the game sets it up to be in the initial 10 hours which I found rather awkward.
The game could also have done a better job with highlighting differences between the character classes. I didn't really enjoy playing the game with the first character I created which meant I had to begin all over again after a few hours playing through it.
The different races seem like they would lock you out of certain playstyles and while the game does try to impose certain restrictions on how good you could be at certain attributes depending on your character's race, I don't think they explored this system well enough.
And the menu UI, the godawful UI in menus really need a facelift. It wasn't a hindrance in enjoying the game but it is definitely something which I hope the developers take into consideration if they release more games in the genre or even in this series.
Overall I'd say this is a game definitely worth experiencing. I can't give the perspective of a seasoned isometric RPG player in terms of how good the mechanics are but from my novice perspective this is an amazing game to get into this genre of games.

The gameplay is also quite refined. Maybe the shootouts are less challenging than in previous Shadowrun titles from the same developer (and overall, in terms of all turn-based squad tactical games), but, if you're looking for trouble, you'll definitely find some. You just need to pick up the aggressive lines and cross the ways with every punk on your horizon. Speaking a bit more about the matchings with the previous Shadowrun games, the Cyberspace and 'hacking' process had evolved as well! Of course, I still prefer the Sega Megadrive variant, but, as for the Harebrained Schemes version, I'd say it's the best they have to offer throughout all three games they made.
But. As I said, you really need to engage yourself in this world with something. Shadowrun Hong Kong is a good, proper isometric RPG of old-school. But boy, it is too slow AND too depressive at once. I love Shadowrun universe, but I am really struggling with myself here because I know there are thousands of more engaging games. Not only I'll get my endorphins faster somewhere else, but, in the end, in the aftertaste, I can't really say that the 'pleasure' of completing this Hong Kong run is anyhow better or more refined than playing some other games. It's like an overdose of sedatives. I doubt many people would really need that pill.
Once again! Shadowrun HK is a well-made game. Quests, texts, fights, music, visuals - all is good enough. But the vibe... the pace... Not exactly tuned for enjoyment. Play it like you don't have so many other games in your collection. Play it if you can really play the part of being the shadowrunner, doing some shady work, and making some meaningful decisions on your way. If possible, don't look for the guides. I use them in many games, but this one isn't really appropriate. I'm talking about high chances of losing the aspiration to play it any further.
The overall mark is 7/10. Could be higher, if someone would directed the game as a whole to be a bit more intense. I certainly can't recommend it for aspiration-seeking cholerics (they won't read this text for that long anyway), and I seriously suggest not starting Shadowrun Hongkong if you're already feeling blue. You can get the rain overdose these days, chum. Stay safe. Stay cool. And don't mess with the megacorporations, without a good reason.

SHHK features some beautiful very atmospheric areas and art. While the characters aren't super detailed if you look closely compared to some other games during this time period, the end result is still a good looking often vibrant scene that has a lot of charm. The music is very solid and really works well with the imagery to help set a dystopian type of scene. The writing was the best in the series along with the character development in my opinion. I wanted to know what my teammates were feeling, their backstory, how they felt about a previous mission etc. The main characters including some npc were all very likeable with completely different personalities and skillsets. Also with the skillsets on pretty much every job it's ideal to have a decker so if your main character is not a decker you will be using Is0bel quite often.
This game is by far the longest in the series with Returns being the shortest. This can be a positive for some and others may not like reading as much and want more action. A lot of this text is optionable however you may need to talk to certain people enough times for specific achievements or endings. For the most part I tried to read text from all the characters that I could but at times it seems like a bit too much. The combat is fairly simple but it has enough depth to it to keep it somewhat interesting. I'd recommend playing on at least hard difficulty because normal is too easy. Make sure when you are in your base area you that you upgrade your teammates with the arrow on the bottom right. It took me halfway into the game before I realized that was there and I've seen others complain of the same issue. I also experienced a few game breaking bugs however there is a cheat menu that you can pull up to possibly alleviate this or you will just need to restart your game.
If you liked Returns and Dragonfall you would certainly appreciate this game. If you are someone who wants a lot of combat and not much story this is not the game for you unless you ignore a lot of dialogue and just steamroll through the battles. SRHK caught me by surprise with its length if you intend to read most of the dialogue. You could potentially sink a lot of hours into these games if do the player made campaigns in the steam workshops.

>Unique mix of magic & cyberpunk.
>Dystopian atmosphere done right.
>Unique atmosphere and setting.
>Well made turn-based elements
>Unique story.
>Good amount of weapon/equipment/skills variety.
>Decent amount of replayability due to different character class focusing & different choices you can make.
Cons:
>Turn-based combat can be a bit repetitive but that would depend on the person.
Overall a sequel that has many improvements & additions while maintaining the standard of the others. Without a doubt a must play for fans of the others
I give it a 8/10

As I type this, this is a literal statement. There are two others that look a lot like this one - the base Shadowrun, and Shadowrun: Dragonfall. They are great campaigns, but you should play them through this game, which is the most updated of the three. (I don't know if you have to buy those two to play their campaigns through this, so buy this one first and see if it comes with all three. It doesn't matter if you end up playing them out of order as each campaign is its own self contained story.)
If you liked the PnP Shadowrun, or 2D isometric RPGs with turn-based combat, this is your thing. The rules are mostly ported from the old PnP game. Build your whomever-you-want and take him through a cyberpunk world that has lots to explore, hack, and fight. Storylines are reasonably strong, and provide a fine framework for you to gain more skill points and power.
I can't think of any reasonable critiques to lay on this game. I enjoyed both this and the other two games a lot. Worth your money and time if you are into this kind of thing.

In this game I was hoping for more of the same, but it seems like they didn’t realise what made Dragonfall work. The writing in Hong Kong is very poor. For a start there’s too much of it. It’s like purple prose everywhere. Highly detailed descriptions of environments I can already see my character in that don’t enhance my understanding of the story or setting except superficially. I’m told about my long-lost father figure and I’m reunited with a “brother” but I’m not given any reasons to care about him or find my brother intriguing. As the game progresses there were moments where I could talk to Duncan and reminisce with him, but it failed to make him sympathetic or likeable, his combat skills didn’t suit my party and I had no reason to use him on missions or to get to know him. This just seems like a failure in writing and game mechanics if he’s supposed to be like a brother to me.
The plot is very weak. You become indebted to a gang leader alongside your “brother” you have no reason to care about and some other characters for reasons that seem convenient only for the writing. There are bugs and there are holes in the UI and gameplay. You can buy equipment for your team-mates but there is no way to tell whether they have the prerequisite attributes in the store or hub world and you have to launch a mission to find out whether they can use the equipment you can scarcely afford. This seems like such a large oversight.
I stopped playing 30 hours in during a mission for a hacker at a convention. The whole set-up for going in as caterers appeared to be there only to serve as a reference to a Simpsons meme, which totally broke immersion/verisimilitude for me and didn’t seem funny. There was a whole room in the level devoted to a computer where you could read emails about a haunted noodle machine. There was a good joke in there, but a total waste of my time to devote a whole room and dialogue tree to do nothing to enhance the story or the gameplay. I encountered bugs where the whole level would freeze and quests would reset. I think this is indicative of the whole design philosophy and the deeper problems with the game. There is so much dialogue and descriptions but I couldn’t tell you what the premise is. There’s no cohesion. It’s like purple prose and white noise you have to trawl through everywhere to get to the next mission. What’s sad is that I played it for 30 hours because there are glimpses of a good game in there. Some of the writing is good. The rat shaman is a really interesting character. Sections of Gaichu and Racter’s stories were interesting but nowhere near focused or concise enough. It was like they just wrote a whole bunch of stuff, loved it too much and forgot to edit. NPCs blurt out their life stories to you in spite of apparently being part of a gritty underworld. The settings are described excruciating much detail and I find them to be a little problematic with potential orientalism.
Some of the missions had the right mix of testing skills, dialogue and combat and were fun and engaging, but there was always way too much dialogue in the hub world to get there. I don’t see why the game has developer commentary available and I really wish they focused their efforts on editing the story - removing plot points that don’t build on existing themes or fit with the premise, ensuring there were intriguing or sympathetic characters and party members whose stats you can check in order to serve the gameplay. They should have ironed out the bugs and cut down the purple prose, but unfortunately they didn’t and I therefore cannot recommend this title. I can recommend Dragonfall, so check that out if you haven't.

What is way more exciting than the combat is the decking. The mechanics are similar to the combat mechanics (turn based, hide behind cover, shoot baddies), but the positioning is far more interesting because there is a stealth component. If you get into the view cone of certain types of baddies it will more rapidly bring a counter closer to a point where you trigger all the alarms in the building and/or summon a bunch of mega-baddies. This makes you think much more carefully about where to put your guy and when to jack out. There's a timed memory mini-game too, which keeps the tension high, even when you're safely out of sight of the baddies.
All that said, the decking is still a waste of time if you only care about the story. It's really unfortunate you can't bypass all the fights and matrix sections, because the story is quite good. It's cyberpunk, it's a ghost story, it's set in Hong Kong - pretty much all the ingredients for an awesome adventure. The side missions do slow the pace a bit, but the characters are interesting and once you get to the final missions the pace picks up and your choices from earlier in the game pay off in a positive way. If you're looking for a cyberpunk fix and you're a fan of story games, this one definitely provides enough content to be worth slogging through the RPG-ish sections.

This game was recommended to me when I was delving deep into my search for more single-player RPGs with strong stories and decent replay value, and I'm so, so glad I decided to buy it. The fights could be tough for a casual gamer, but the strategics involved never seemed unfair, and the mechanics were pretty simple for me to pick up on. I know some people find it a bit too word-heavy, but I absolutely loved the detail that went into every teammate's backstory, as well as the incredibly unique and fun missions. This game was truly a master class in dropping a total newcomer to the Shadowrun world and not have them spend the first hour or two completely confused (Pillars of Eternity, I'll get through you someday...). I have such a soft spot for all the characters and, while I'm not too happy at the ultimate ending of the extended edition, this is a game that has massive replay value for sure and one I couldn't recommend enough.

Especially if like me you can grow tired of spending time outside of fights like in XCOM.
I would recommend playing Hong Kong last after playing the rest of the series: 1st Shadowrun Returns > 2nd Shadowrun Dragonfall > 3rd Shadowrun Hong-Kong
PROS:
- Tons of character classes/specialisations, high replayability
- Engaging dystopian/cyberpunk universe
- Story choices matter
- Lots of different ways to win both fights and story decisions
- Simple inventory, most of your time is spent playing
CONS:
- Some specs are a bit unbalanced, it only matters on hard though
TIPS:
- Start at min 4 charisma and level up to 6 to unlock most story options
- For an easy playthrough prefer high quickness, lots of chrome, and assault rifle spec + monowhip

The characters are all very good and all well written, just like in Dragonfall. I loved Racter. Overall, solid game, from the three new Shadowrun games, I rank this one 2nd, with Dragonfall on top of course.

Extended edition carries a bonus campaign in order to *have your revenge*
there are some other campaign that people made in workshop , however didint had the time to check them out.
the game takes around 30 Hours or so if u read all the dialogue. be ready for 40+ if u are going for all the side missions and everything.

Missions are WAY more diverse and interesting, and combat, while similar, is not such a one-trick pony, thanks to the rather deep (and initially confusing) skill system.
Missions are also not 90% combat with a console at the end.
There is some genuine creativity in questlines and missions. Also companions have their own good stories. Even non-party NPC like traders have their own story you (can) discaver over time. Giving the world more depth than the cardboard cutout npc of other games.
That DOES mean a lot of reading but it's worth it.
Edit: The Extended Edition Bonus mission are a bit of a drop in quality. They are indeed mostly relatively simple combat heavy missions. By that time you're high level and know what you'ee doing, still a shame.
Because earlier, WHEN there is combat it can get pretty unfair (multiple enemies spawning out of nothing behind you...) and annoying even in lower difficulty.
But it's the pc. There are ways, if necessary.. .
I highly recommend this and it's predecessor Dragonfall over the very expensive and - frankly - not very good Wasteland 3 already. I'd also do that for Atom RPG and of course Divinity OS, similar in concept but also better. Espeically in the story department.
All these are also a lot cheaper.

Play Shadowrun: Hong Kong…just don’t play it first. This game stands up fine on its own merits, but I honestly enjoyed Returns and Dragonfall more. Two welcome improvements are to decking and an excellent musical score. Additional gear, magic, and combat options are offset by combat being painfully easy. Be prepared to do A LOT of reading. I do not recommend graphics resolutions higher than standard HD. If you finish Hong Kong, be absolutely certain you fire up the expansion! IMO Shadows of Hong Kong is what this game was supposed to be!
-----
Hong Kong is the final installment of the Shadowrun series by HBS. Each game is independent, so you can play them in any order. I strongly recommend saving Hong Kong for last. I felt it was the weakest overall. While Returns was a shorter game with very limited gear and combat, the story was tight and combat felt more engaging. Dragonfall had the best story, more interesting combat, and most of the improvements to the interface, gear, combat, and magic that are also in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is still a decent game, and worth playing. The initial hook to the game was my favorite part of the story, and while the main plot was good, it fell a little flat near the end. The themes and character development are also excellent.
Your biggest time sink in Hong Kong is excessive NPC dialog (on the order of 2 hours of dialog between missions). Take the time to catch up with your party members because that unlocks quests, upgrades, etc. If the dialog is too much for you, though, you can skip the “life story” from the quest hub NPCs (except Crafty)…you will only miss out on a small handful of Karma (less than 5 points).
I do NOT recommend turning the resolution up past standard HD (1920x1080). I have a 2k set-up, and the dialog box became so small I felt disconnected from the game. Since you spend over half your time reading from that box, the high res mode was a major distraction.
Karma (XP) was awarded at a good pace, but I felt short-changed in the money department. That is probably because I built a troll samurai with heavy cyber, and cyber feels disproportionately expensive. Other builds would probably be ok with the money.
I really liked the improvements to decking. New elements were added that require you to pay attention to how you interact with elements in the matrix, and it feels more engaging.
Most of the class options are well balanced and feel pretty good. My troll cyber-samurai-meatball-tank was fun to play and quite effective. Mages are the only class that I didn’t like. While they aren't bad, they mostly feel like a low armor, low HP version of a gun samurai with different animations. I enjoy the feel and effectiveness of Shamans, Sprit Summoning, and Conjuration much more than mage Spellcasting.
Combat was ok, but way too easy. I played on Hard, and never once came close to getting KO-ed. I rarely used my consumables (grenades, spirit stones, etc). I attribute this mostly to bad AI. Bad guys only ever attack once and then move. Even if it is totally obvious the best move is to stay under cover and shoot multiple times…they attack once and then move…sometimes out of cover.
If you get to the end of Hong Kong you absolutely must fire up the expansion campaign. The gameplay doesn’t change, but the story and pacing are much better. Plus, I finally got enough money to deck out my cyber the way I wanted. Shadows of Hong Kong is what this game should have been. Unfortunately, it is too short to be worth playing the base game just to get to the expansion, but if you finished the base game you will really enjoy the expansion.

The sound design has also improved dramatically. Where before the sounds of certain weapons were nearly deafening and certain environmental sounds were extremely repetitive, everything is much more polished now in that regard. Gameplay-wise, it's fantastic. It's like playing a pen-and-paper game, which is actually very impressive. You can customize your character extensively through several different levels of progression, such as installing new and improved cyberware, improving your stats, unlocking new dialogue options, getting access to new gear, it's really intricate.
If you enjoy exploring every single detail on your way, finding codes for doors (and memorizing them as well, as the game doesn't do that for you) and making choices that have palpable consequences for the story, you will love this game. My only gripe is that it's actually quite short. Before buying it, I searched the playtime length and found that the very lowest hours for it ranged at around 22 hours, which is a lot for a breezing-through run. Now, I actually took my time with some of the quests, redid some fights that didn't go as expected, and still managed to finish the entire main story in under 12 hours. To be fair I did read through all of the text fairly quickly and I skipped several missions on the way, but I was quite surprised when the game started rolling credits. Also, and this is a good thing, a lot of the fights are actually entirely skippable, so your style of playing has a huge impact on how long your playthrough is.
The experience was definitely interesting because of Shadowrun's unique combination of sci-fi and fantasy, but considering I spent most of that playtime going through almost entirely disconnected stories, the main story resolved at the very ending was somewhat lacking in length, and felt abrupt and unexpected. It was so disconnected from everything that when I talked to a friend who had already finished it ages ago, he said he didn't even remember the ending, despite being very enthusiastic about the game as a whole. I did enjoy the game quite a lot, and especially the disconnected segments that felt like they were taken straight out of a Cyberpunk detective thriller movie. I recommend this to anyone looking for a fresh RPG to play.

Matrix running was a big draw for me to this series, and while I am ultimately satisfied that it was eventually implemented, the latest changes don't add anything to the experience for me, particularly the Watcer IC. While they are constrained to a predetermined track and require some timing to navigate, it is frustratingly difficult, and typically results in a system alarm that reverts the matrix aspect back to it's original conception, with the added roadblock that once a system is on high alert, your entire motivation to use the matrix in the first place is completely nullified since you will be unable to access controls or data nodes.
The dialog and the story are the real shining stars in this title. They are great but ultimately fruitless as it is very rare for your choices to have any kind of significant impact on the conversation at hand. This isn't a new thing for modern CRPGs, but it is incredibly tedious going through the same dialog three and four times due to a mission failure or bad team makeup. Given that it has no ultimate impact on the final outcome, it is not uncommon to place your mouse cursor on option one while banging the enter to key to brute force your way through a conversation you have seen three times already.
I really want to like this game, but I think I would rather play Dragonfall at this point.

Now at some 40h of game play the main plot is done and doing extras but it doesn't seem that the adventures are done and dusted even now.
Needless to say the price you pay vs how much entertainment you get from this is very good. Buy it. You wont be sorry. Playing through the previous games is somewhat recommended but not necessary at all since there are only a few references to the past here and there and they don't matter.

Just finished this game (~30hrs) and now I remember why I avoid text games.
Lazy stories and bad writing.
This is the exact opposite.
Holly crap.
What a journey.
Can't wait to play it again and see how things turn out.
Gameplay is fun and engaging. Character building is interesting once you figure it out.
The options man so many of them. If you like xcom and haven't played this... you 're missing out.
This is what xcom wishes it could be.
Graphics are ok (but they should have added the option to rotate the playfield).
Atmosphere is amazing and the music is great.
but the story, atmosphere and the characters are the main reasons to play this. and then replay it.
and then play it again.
Awesome game.

While not as a big leap in the gameplay department as how Dragonfall was to the original Shadowrun Returns, developer Harebrained Schemes still manages to offer improvements to the beloved tactics RPG, especially in the area of decking and hacking with some fun mechanics (I haven't really tested all the classes however, Street-Samurai for life!) and the quality of gameplay and story is as always top-notch with you the player this time shadowrunning through the dark wet streets of Honk Kong in a story that feels more personal than ever, dealing with family and loss. While dragonfall was again a major improvement over the 1st entry, this time around I guess it's up to your personal preference whether you prefer this story overthe previous one. I absolutely loved Dragonfall and I think that by a small margin i prefer the previous team and their bond, but Honk Kong still offers some unforgettable and beloved characters both heroes and villains with even more shades of grey sprinkled around and some tough decisions to make along the way. Add some ass-kicking soundtrack that really elevated the atmosphere of the asian megalopolis and you got a winner.
As always the game comes with an editor so you can create (or download) extra content from the community and resume your run in the shadows.
If there is one big criticism, that would the a problem that affected Dragonfall as well, meaning some bugs with one especially frustrating and almost game-breaking one that prevents you from progressing through a mission. Frtunately there is a rewind option but hear my advice : Make sure you SAVE OFTEN and SAVE IN DIFFERENT BACKUP SLOTS to avoid any significant loss of progress. Besides that i haven't really encountered any serious other issues.
With this, i finally completed all three shadowrun games.
[strike] (actually by this time of writing I have not finished the bonus content campaign so I can't comment of the quality of this extra episode) [/strike]
(including the bonus content which was unexpectedly lengthy, fun but storywise I feel not as good as the main campaign)
The return of this beloved classic was a rewarding experience and will fondly remember my time with it - despite me being mostly a JRPG fan, Shadowrun proved to be an excellent western entry in the rpg genre that impressed me with it's style (plus reviving some fond memories from the good ol' SNES days) - but i can understand the need for the devs to move on to other games. If Shadowrun ever... Returns (again) it will certainly need to innovate further than simply repeating for a fourth time - If or whenever that happens, I will be around with open arms.
