The Binding of Isaac mithalten.

Zu dem Zeitpunkt, an dem ich diese Review verfasse, gibt es nur drei Ebenen, jedoch machen mir diese jedes mal wieder Spaß. Freue mich schon auf das nächste Update!

This game screams quality. Everything good about it is obvious as soon as you you boot up the game. The vibe, art and sound direction are all top notch. On paper, this would be a very good game. But some gameplay issues make it a very frustrating experience. The sad thing is, these could have been avoided probably, but someone decided not to.

Most of the time, I don't feel in control of my character's movement. The character usually doesn't go in the direction I intend it to. When you attack with your sword, the game makes you fly towards the center of the enemy. And enemy projectiles can hit you because of this. Or when you dash, and there is an enemy in the general direction of your dash, game will make you dash directly at the enemy. And if enemy happens to be firing at you at that moment, disaster happens.

And game is full of this kind of issues. I assume some of the little mechanics were intended to help the player, but they have the inverse effect. For example, your character will automatically wall-run/slide when you are near the wall, but that can make you hit by enemy projectiles. Another example is that when new enemies are spawning, enemies closer to you will spawn slower. This was probably done with good intention so that player is not surprised by sudden spawning enemies, but it also means enemies far away can come closer and gang up on you while you wait for closer enemies to spawn.

I would say the game is too greedy with its mechanics. The game would be better with less and simpler mechanics. For example, the wall-run/slide/jump could be excluded, and honestly nothing would feel missing. There is already too many buttons you should press frequently. The default control scheme (of gamepad) is also not good. My performance improved so much after remapping some buttons so that controls are like other similar games.

When I say it like this, it sounds like a bad game, but it is not. I just wish I had played this in the early alpha, so that my feedback could maybe have more impact. Nevertheless I will be looking forward to the next game from these devs.

This might seriously be the most fun roguelike I've ever played. The controls are incredible, the difficulty is high yet EXTREMELY fair, combat feels fluid and fun, items are great, the metroidvania level style is really cool imo, and none of the moves feel useless. The visuals are obviously also incredible, I really recommend you give this a shot on sale or off.

Imagine if Celeste and Hyperlight Drifter had a rogue-like love child that grew up playing DOOM and that's Scourgebringer. The game is fantastic. The color palettes alone are beautiful and distinct for each realm you get to. The combat utilizes a dash mechanic very similar to the one in Celeste, and you can also hang onto walls in a similar manner. The music and monster design is heavily influenced from DOOM, and they absolutely pull all of these elements off. There is a rudimentary skill tree system for upgrading yourself between runs. I'm hoping that at some point there's going to be some workshop support for this game. In the game's current state it is absolutely worth the money. If you're a fan of rogue-likes with tight platforming this is the game for you. An absolute success and the happiest I've been with an impulse purchase in quite some time. 5/5

This game is one of the most initially exciting games and most disappointing games I've ever played. The perfect example of wasted potential. It just shouldn't have been a roguelite.

Every single run is the exact same. You use the exact same mechanics to fight the exact same enemies in the exact same rooms over and over again in rooms that look the same in a map that is mostly the same because it has 0 thought put into it.

With such a snappy movement and combat system, this game would've been an amazing metroidvania, slowly unlocking all the mechanics the devs just dump on you as soon as you start. Or at the very least, there could be some interesting unlocks (new weapons, new areas etc.) or satisfying unlocks (just more damage or health to start with, not just 2 initial health upgrades you buy immediately). It's crazy how quickly I got bored of the game once I realized this was all that it offers.

Hopefully this team makes something with the same gamefeel quality, but better overall design in their next project.

I just feel a little disappointed by this game honestly. I saw it on a stream and thought it looked so cool, right up my alley, but to me the gameplay just falls short of being interesting. Maybe i'm not too deeply into it, but to me it's just a button masher with loose controls - not a bullet hell platformer, not a true roguelike(maybe it's not intended as that, I don't know tbh). Not enough variety in controls for me, I'm just smashing the attack button and the range attack just feels like kind of an afterthought. It doesn't feel very balanced around it.

Don't get me wrong, it's an ok game. But for me, it just didn't capture my attention with what is a potentially amazing formula.

It gets compared to Celeste, which is a joke, because it doesnt have what is the core of Celeste: precise and frameexact control and movement. In Celeste, your movement resources are meaningfull and should be used wisely. This game however is just a floaty, buttonmash slasher with exhausting controls. Of course this game is meant to be played fast and not as a puzzle plattformer, but it would benefit heavily from a higher gravity and perhaps more momentum from moving, rather than putting all the emphasis on your dash. The movement is way too floaty and the fast gameplay stems from dashing alone, rather than from regular movement. So youre either almost standing still midair, because autoattacking kills off every momentum, or your speed is at 100% when you dash - theres no inbetween.

The combat is also extremely simplistic. The main autoattack is just a very close ranged dps tool without any complexity. You dodge projectiles, dash in, bash autoattack, combine it with a heavystun attack and repeat. There are some gimmicks like reflecting projectiles with the heavy attack or a ranged special attack, but it has ammo and thus isnt something you can use permanent inbetween the dodge-attack cycle.

Honestly, better check out 20XX or 30XX. They have more or less the same premise, but go way beyond the simplistic design of this game.

Pretty great game, combat feels smooth as shit and it's really fun to dash around the room like a meth addicted squirrel shooting and slicing through everything, perfect mix between mindless button mashing and quick thinking and precision. graphics are alright, simple style and some cool designs here and there. Soundtrack really gets you pumped when you enter a new combat room and then the idle track which is great so you can backtrack without having your ears blown out. As a rougelite it is lacking a few areas such as the progression is so fucking grindy, Honestly my main gripe with the game is that it's a grindfest of smashing your head against the wall forever all for some really uninteresting upgrades and then eventually getting the important ones after going through the others, There is no variety in your runs as the guns and perk shrine give you shit that is so interchangeable that I legit don't even pick them up sometimes cause they don't do shit. Still a real fun and great game that I recommend, If you don't think it's for you then maybe get it on sale?

Reci-Cat Reviews!

Played on My Twitch

Music-7/10 (Repetitive nature)
Graphics-9.5/10 (Gorgeous pixel art)
Replayability-8/10 (Seems like it wouldn't get stale and you could get a lot out of it^ ^)
Gameplay-8/10 (Simplistic combos, really fun combat)
Enjoyment-8/10 (besides a couple irks with how things are found out, really fun to play and a good if not great challenge)

Final Thoughts:
Loved the game through and through just didn't like that combo was locked behind the fast travel function (which I never used)

Interesting game, but deceptive at face value. From early access footage I thought it would be a lot more similar to katana zero, but it isn't. This is meant to be played as a very fast paced game, and if you don't play it that way you might as well not pick it up. Early on you'll find that mashing attack and dash is a pretty good strategy, which somewhat turned me off the game, but this is because later on it continues to stack on mechanics and attack patterns that layer onto the strategies you need to use. The game gets very tough, and there's only one way to beat it. There's some leeway in what weapons you prefer, but for the most part there is no other option besides getting better at the intended mechanics. This is hampered somewhat by the fact that the more you progress the more it is required that you improve at fighting enemies you may only see a hand full of times before you die. Personally, it felt quite cheep to reach a new level only to be completely unable to fight any of the enemies as they have entirely new attack patterns to the previous level. As you progress there are certain patterns to the mob variations that makes it easier, but early on progression has some major road blocks. Over time it got more fun to improve my strategies and skill, but even then there are some glaring issues. My main gripe is that half of your attacks will auto aim to the nearest enemy, including your only movement ability. This often leads to situations where I can recognize an incoming attack, but fail to avoid it because a dash locks onto an enemy or because a basic attack glues me to the enemy I'm fighting. This issue wouldn't be so bad if the dash didn't insist on dragging enemies along with you, making it so certain attacks can only be avoided by letting go of the controls and falling away. It certainly looks nice to play, but the combination of auto aim and the optimal strategy make playing it feel a lot more like steering train than controlling a responsive character. Often times it feels like I'm just along for the ride in any given situation, and I personally prefer games with more control. It's ok, buy it full price if it looks fun, but if not get it on sale. Worth a try, but not for everyone.

This game is cool as heck. Fast paced, satisfying, stylish all over; probably my favourite melee based rougelite ever.
Not a *ton* of variation with runs, but that really isn't the point so if you're looking for dozens of upgrades and synergies to explore you won't find it here. Instead you'll get an experience that rewards you learning the mechanics and optimising combat in a way that makes you feel like an absolute ninja.
Takes a little while to unlock some (imo) core moves that you don't start with but push on.
There are also some Hades-esque modifiers for extra challenge if you're concerned about replayability.

Wonderfully fast paced, tight and punchy action platforming gameplay, fine-tuned rougelike elements that add just enough replay value to get the player to the finish line without slowing down the experience, and all on top of an immediately exciting world. If that wonderfully animated woeful chaos in the trailers has you excited, you're in for a riot. The newly added adaptive difficulty opens this game up to a much wider audience, especially to those that just want to see the unique world built here, along with beautiful art in motion on display along the way.

DO:

-expect a challenge still, along the lines of Fury or Hyper-light drifter, with added 'chaos mods' to bump things up to 11 if you're interested.

-remember this is mostly an action/adventure platformer, using rougelite elements to flesh out the game loop. You'll be spending much more time learning enemy patterns and how to best use your abilities than deciding which stat block you want on your gun.

-check out the soundtrack, which generally sticks to frenetic, ever-shifting synths oozing with atmospheric flavor driven by skittering drum lines. These tracks are then infused with a hearty dose of ultrviolence, a mixture of riffs that RIP and toned up percussion to help your TEAR through enemy waves and minibosses, with each end-of-stage boss getting their own destructive track.

-sit back and soak in the atmosphere. The game's narrative is centered on the central cataclysm and the world around the
disaster, with characters serving more to be the player's perspective into the world rather than take center stage and advance the scene. The pull of the mystery still hit me, but you probably already know whether or not that kind of story works for you.

DON'T:

-Expect a lengthy, endlessly growing dungeon crawler as some other titles offer. This is a tightly woven, compact experience in which the depth of both the game's mechanics and world can be seen within a few winning runs. A few wins make take 20+ hours to achieve for ... some of us, on the default difficulty, but I digress. This was a positive for me, all comes down to taste and free time.

-Tunnel vision on the 'rougelike' tag on this game. It's there, but it isn't the center of the experience. The core dash n' slash gameplay is more or less a static element through each run, with upgrades being most noticeable and your secondary ranged weapon. Again don't buy this game hoping to squeeze a 40+ hour experience out of what is essentially a shifting five floor dungeon crawl.

-miss out on this title just because the difficulty curve was rough for some on release. The adaptive difficulty makes the limited life bar much more manageable, and opens the game up to anybody more interested in the aesthetic appeal of the game than it's white-knuckle aggressive game play loop.

My complaint about this game is that there is no variety. Made it to act 4, and all the enemies are recolors of the act 1 enemies. They shoot a few more bullets, or their shots go through walls, or home in on you. There are no interesting power ups, all I ever found was +5% damage, or +10% recharge speed or BOTH(!).

The plot really didn't do anything for me. It's there, it's mysterious, or maybe just vague. No one has any personality.

The game looks great! But that's about all there is to it.

This game is very good and one of the best roguelites. It deserves to be in the same discussions as other top games in the genre such as Hades, Dead Cells etc. The 5 worlds are all great. The enemy variety is top tier, and the bosses are all fantastic. The soundtrack is perfect and could easily be in Doom without a second thought. The gameplay is fast and visceral and doesn't get old.

A lot of negative reviews by people criticizing the game mechanics have me wondering if they're actually using all tools available in the game or have fully grasped the gameplay.

9/10 would highly recommend to anyone that enjoys the genre.

At its core, it's an action platforming rogue-like, but the movement and controls really elevate it to something special. Excellent game, very dynamic with a very good game feel. Slashing and dashing across rooms, stunning enemies before they can attack is very rewarding. The challenge is quite high, but every mistake can be understood and enemy patterns are easy to learn and overcome. Even though I am quite slow according to the global achievements I am enjoying it very much and can witness my progress as I play.
The setting and atmosphere are reminiscent of Ghibli movies such as The Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa, which is great. The little bits of lore and story are too scarce to my taste but still enjoyable.

I recommend it to anyone who enjoys roguelikes and fast action platformers. Even though I am a bit tired of roguelite games since there are so many of them I can't seem to stop playing this game.

Faster than Lightning

In Short: ScourgeBringer will keep your heart racing as you struggle to keep up with its frantic pace. However, once you manage to, you'll be addicted. It’s unforgiving; each area has its own learning curve, and the tolerance for error is minor, resulting in a satisfying experience. Unfortunately, there’s a lack of variety, reducing the replay value, an important aspect of a rogue-lite. With that said, I enjoyed the game, and I would recommend it - just keep your expectations in check.

Rating: Good

How I rate games

Rogue-lites are the talk of the town currently. This year, we’ve seen more of them release than any other. However, this spike of popularity has resulted in an abundance of games belonging to the genre. ScourgeBringer, developed by Flying Oak Games, is one of the newer additions. Can it manage to stand out in an oversaturated market?

The Quick and the Dead

ScourgeBringer is fast. Assuming the role of a warrior named Kyhra, you’ll dash and slash through interconnected chambers filled with monstrous creatures, high-tech robots and fiendish devils. The combat is gratifying, but expect to die a lot. With a steep learning curve, it can be hard to keep up with the rapid pace. Being quick is the goal. When you’re up against multiple enemies, all of which demand your attention, it can get hectic.

Luckily, Kyhra is agile and fierce. Her swift dashes allow her to dodge incoming attacks while also moving closer to enemies. With a concise set of maneuvers, each inclusion has its purpose. Your quick attack can dispose of foes efficiently. Each enemy has a stronger attack, indicated by a flashing exclamation point above their head. By smashing them with a heavy attack beforehand, you can stun them. If you don’t like getting up close and personal, you’re armed with a ranged weapon. There are many to choose from; grenade launchers, shotguns and so on.

To complete the game, you have to overcome the challenges of five locales. The first two are similar in function, while the others modify the rules. In one area, as an example, walls won’t protect you; projectiles will fly right through, forcing you to face your foes head-on. I liked this aspect of the level design, as it encourages you to approach the game differently, while keeping the core intact. That being said, this isn’t a game that’s easy to approach. With a low tolerance for error, it’s brutally punishing. Kyhra starts out with only 8 health points, and the struggle to stay alive will make it hard to keep your nerves in check. Each area comes with its own learning curve; once you complete one, another will be waiting to test your skills.

What’s a Rogue-lite Without Replayability?

Unfortunately, the game lacks variety. Whereas other rogue-lites offer heaps of items, tools and weapons to choose from, ScourgeBringer’s selection is limited, with a single melee weapon and a limited collection of firearms. Instead of trying out new tactics, I would retrace my steps. Why, you ask? Because it worked. The combat doesn’t encourage creativity, and the lack of variation abolished my incentive to replay the game. It’s not that the game doesn’t advocate this; upon finishing the game, you’ll unlock modifiers that acclimate the difficulty, and there are also additional endings to witness.

In between runs, you’ll find yourself at the Chiming Three. Here, you can acquire skills by investing Judge Blood. Aside from a bestiary, this is the only progression that carries over from run to run. At first, I liked the concept of acquiring new moves and upgrades, but I was disappointed when I unlocked them all early on. It meant that, for the remaining 40 hours or so, I had no option of permanently improving my character. It also resulted in the aforementioned currency becoming useless, as it has no other purpose.

As you annihilate hordes of enemies, you earn blood droplets. These are used to purchase items from Greed, an acquisitive merchant whose name is self-explanatory. You can increase the amount obtained by building up your combo meter. The more times you hit a creature, the higher it goes. Should you take damage, it resets. Whereas the frantic pace encourages you to be quick, this system functions as a reminder that you are, indeed, not invincible.

A Mysterious World

Each area requires you to beat a Judge before proceeding. To face them, you must first defeat a number of Guardians. In the first two areas, you need only defeat one, but the number rises as you progress. I enjoyed fighting the bosses; however, I couldn’t help but feel like they were easier than the conventional enemies once I got used to their movesets. Nonetheless, they’re enjoyable and bring a nice change of pace to the action.

Right from the beginning, it’s clear that lore and world-building isn’t the focal point. You can find logs of text which provide insight into the world you’re exploring, but none of the coherent themes are explored enough to result in an intriguing story. The game’s setting is nothing out of the ordinary, serving as a backdrop for the exciting gameplay loop. When the combat is excellent, which is the case here, that’s not a problem.

The visuals are simple yet effective. ScourgeBringer’s pixel art style can be hard to comprehend at first, but once you get used to it, it’s charming to glance at. Its lack of detail combined with sharp textures produce a unique appearance. As for the soundtrack, it’s a nice mix of heavy metal and occasional 8-bit tunes. Although not particularly memorable, it’s nice listening to while you slay the monstrosities you encounter on your journey.

Technical Details

Intel Core i7-10700K, RTX 2070 Super, 16GB DDR4 RAM @ 3200Mhz, Intel 660P NVME M.2 SSD | 1440p
  • Performance: There were no issues whatsoever. Running at a blissful 2000+ frames per second, the experience was smooth.
  • Polish: I encountered one crash during my 60 hours of playtime. This wasn’t a returning issue, and as such, not a big deal. Other than that, there were a few instances of room entrances not appearing, but it was easy to solve.
  • Controls: Using a controller is the best option, but mouse/keyboard works as well.

Don't buy this game.
I haven't played enough to write a more complete rewiev, but here are some obvious problems

- Combat is very repetetive and spammy. Just mash the buttons, and you'll eventually win. Of course you need to know enemy patterns as well, but it's still feels very mindless
- Upgrades don't feel important enough. It's not even worse to look what you get after a battle because it's always just a tiiiny stat boost. There are no pickups that make the game feel different. Only small stat boosts
- Skill tree with mechanis that should've been unlocked before you even start playing (map teleportation)

- Nothing about this game is unique or creative. All of the game mechanics are from other games (Monolith for example)
- Art style also feels very generic. Reminds A LOT of Hyper Light Drifter, a bit TOO MUCH. Again feels very unoriginal
(of course that's subjective, all art is made by iterating on other art, but this game feels like it's just a clone of a few other games with nothing special to add on it's own)

Do you like fast paced 2D action ?
Do you like roguelites ?
Do you like heavy metal ?
Well boy do I have a game for you. Scourgebringer might be one of the best if not the BEST roguelite I have ever played. The core gameplay is amazing the music is fitting and an absolute banger and the game also has really good pixel-art. Difficulty wise I heard a lot of people say that game is very challenging for me it wasn't that bad not the easiest not the hardest. My only nitpick is that bosses die too fast.
Overall 91/100 for me

This game is great for those who enjoy a challenge and are OK with dying. In this Rogue-lite, you can build skills for the main character and the skills are carried through your runs.

At first, I struggled a lot and almost gave up, but I found it amazingly rewarding to keep playing. The runs are relatively short so you do not lose massive amounts of progress for dying. Now, I play the game to wind down and it is relaxing after work and I really enjoy the hard-modes released in the full release.

The games controls feel great. Watching the videos I had worried about how the controls would work, but they have been implemented very well that movement feels very natural. The game assists the player some automatically and this results in a consistently good experience. The controls also allow you to pull off trick-shots and near-misses that feel really good when you can do them successfully.

The gameplay feels polished and responsive, but the lack of randomization between runs makes the progression a bit of a slog. You'll eventually unlock new abilities, QoL skills, and passive upgrades, however after a certain point the various Gift of Blood's that you get throughout a run feel like the only meaningful variation between runs. I'm sure the devs will add more variation to runs with future updates, but currently I can't recommend the game for fans of more randomized roguelites.

This game is fantastic! The gameplay is smooth, fast, and skillful. A hefty learning curve with a fire soundtrack to slice devils to. I would pick up this indie gem asap, it is a great experience so far.
I only have one major issue with is game. You get done with the meta progression insanely fast. I hadn't even beaten the second floor when I got all the progression upgrades (not including the boss locked upgrades). This is due mainly because of a mid run upgrade which provides A TON of meta currency. If this upgrade was removed I think the progression curve would have a much nicer curve to it.
The only other things I would change are minor UI things. Opening the map you use tab and you can use tab OR your mouse to teleport to a different room (Once unlocked). So a lot of the time I end up trying to close the map and end up teleporting to a room that I didn't want to be in.
The other UI change I would suggest is just a little x or checkmark on the unlock tree for enabled/disabled upgrades. I frequently wouldn't realize that I had turned an upgrade off until late into a run.
Otherwise a fantastic game that may just need a couple of balance changes here and there.
Feels like Monolith and Enter The Gungeon and Hyper Light Drifter all had parental rights on raising this game. (Artstyle/Gamefeel/Mechanics)
8/10, just needs a little quality of life changes.

Extremely punishing combat that does not reward you in return.

The controls bothered me so I tried controller to see if it helped, It didn't.

You aren't playing the game until you collect tokens to upgrade your skill tree.

Shops offer items at ridiculous prices early in the game where you cannot possibly collect enough blood to afford anything even if you clear the entire map.

I don't think I have much to say about Scourgebringer, and that's the big issue here.

The gameplay is fast and stylized, but feels very messy and unfulfilling for some reason, maybe because nothing has weight to it, and the game is super punishing for even slight mistakes. In ScourgeBringer you zip around a 2d arena with equipped with a double jump, wall cling, a dash attack, a melee attack, a stunning attack and a recharging gun. Enemies have colliding attacks, shoot projectiles and all the usual jazz. The game pushes you to be very aggressive by rewarding more shop currency for flawless rooms and fast kill chains.

It's blindingly fast, and therein lies my gripe, as the game is just super messy. White flashes everywhere and with the protagonist teleporting with the dash, it's very easy to get lost in the mess. It doesn't help that the crosshair can get lost in the jumble too, and you can't really alter the colour scheme.

You attacks also don't really feel weighty, the bullet reflect with the smash feels extra bad (enemies shoot chains of bullets, but you have no invulnerability when smashing and the hitbox doesn't last long enough for it to matter, unless against single projectiles). I don't really feel for the bosses either, since they react even less to your hits.

Playing with a controller feels extra bad to boot, since either you use autoaim or forget about the gun, and I don't like either option.

It feels like it wants to be a 2d Devil May Cry/Bayonetta-esque character action game in a roguelite shell but to me it comes across as a migraine-inducing cavalcade of fast clicking and hollow action sequences. The game doesn't feel unfair or too hard, but there's nothing here that really makes me want to keep coming back. I honestly forgot that I had purchased this, and that's kinda sad.

The controls and gamefeel here are top-notch. It's something I immediately noticed when I started the tutorial, and continued to appreciate throughout my many, many attempts to finally beat the game. This game is punishingly hard. Not a lot of content right now either, but the 1.0 release in October will bring more.

While the moment to moment gameplay is good, it get's old quickly. The problem is that there is no run variety. The bosses and routes are always the same. There are virtually no interesting decisions to be made. No items you will find will meaningfully change your playstyle.

Celeste came of age and had a baby with Doom Slayer. The combat is smoother than Olive Garden's fettuccine alfredo. The overall experience is as cohesive as an Isaac Asimov novel.

At the time of writing this review, the learning curve is quite steep; I'd expect the game to be extremely frustrating, maybe even inaccessible, to someone without experience on a fast-paced precision action game, like 90's Mario/Sonic, Celeste, or Hotline Miami. That might change when the game comes out of early access, and is understandable since it would be unfortunate to have carefully-crafted learning/tutorial levels invalidated by a change in the mechanic.

I LOVE this game. I first got an early demo as a part of a bundle and I've loved it ever since.

I'm not usually too keen on roguelikes or intense fast combat, but the mechanics are just too fun! It's simple but because it's so fast paced it doesn't get too stale (especially as you gradually progress to find new enemies), and I feel like I'm getting better on every run. I've been playing for about 6 hours and I just made it to the fourth area. I get the impression it's a short game but I haven't reached the ending yet, I prefer to play it in small bursts as to not get burnt out, but it's still in early access so it could easily get longer! Who knows?
Speaking of early access, it's currently an option to be able to submit feedback inside of the game which I really love. I'm assuming that'll disappear when early access is over but it's still a great addition.
The art style and aesthetic in general is BEAUTIFUL. Pixel art on its own is nothing original but the style is really nice, everything is really pleasing to look at and the base dark purple makes it way more appealing that standard black.
Even in early access, it's a really good game that I really recommend if you like roguelikes or intense combat, but keep in mind that I feel it's pretty short, especially if it's taken me so long to get to the fourth area because I'm just not used to these kinds of games. Overall, a solid 7.5/10, as it still needs a few QOL and general improvements.

The procedural generation in this game compliments its action-heavy nature by creating a 'hack n' slash' in which the player can be both stylish, and self expressive. The game could use a bit more variety that I'm happy to see the developers implementing with constant updates. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the free expression of Devil May Cry, with the procedural generation of a game like DeadCell, and the visual art of Celeste.

This game has very tight platforming controls, non-stop action, not hard once you get the hang of it.
Every run is randomized to a limit, you will always encounter the miniboss which you will have to defeat in order to unlock the boss door. IMO it is great, you learn through mistakes, eventually you have all the bosses patterns' memorized, the danger then lies in the random room, especially in the last (for now) zone.

There is progression through skill unlocks, but none make you overpowered, instead you will unlock some moves / combos that will make some of the toughest encounters manageable.

The atmosphere is amazing, the pixelart graphics are gorgeous, the music is awesome and perfectly fits the gameplay.

I haven't had that much fun in a long time with a game, can't wait to see what the devs have in store for the future.

So if you like platforming with few randomized elements, fast paced close combat / ranged when things get too intense, this game is just perfect

4.5 hours in and feeling like I'm about half way. Done 4/7 skill tree branches.

As far as core mechanics go, Scourgebringer seems very well crafted so far, and I'm interested to see what it looks like when it's fully polished and ready for release. Assuming you have moderate success, you'll have access to all the controller mapped abilities in the first 2-3 hours, which is a good move for a challenging platformer/roguelite; you want to be able to start mastering those controls early on.

The art style is solid. Nothing outstanding, but it's got a good aesthetic and the enemy animations are clear as day. It never feels frustrating, as though you can't see attacks coming, and a lot of good design choices have to go in to making that the case.

My biggest complaint as far as mechanics go is the dash ability. It works fine when you're flying about, but it interacts with walls very poorly and in a way that is not intuitive. If you're climbing a wall and you try and dash upward, if you aim your dash even slightly toward the direction of the wall, it seems to pretty consistently just launch you down the wall. It's the only part of the platforming that doesn't feel tight and has multiple times resulted in what I think to be unnecessary damage. Considering the game that is marketed as Dead Cells style with Celeste platforming, I'm surprised they dash functions this way in comparison to Celeste where dashing into a wall just moves you nowhere and diagonal dashing into a wall sends you up/down the wall with reduced momentum of a normal dash. This may seem like a small gripe, but it is very frustrating and feels counter-intuitive. Everything else about the platforming is super tight, and changing this could make its platforming top-tier in my opinion.

As for style, it's hard to tell what kind of ethos Scourgebringer is going for. At times it feels like it wants to be Enter the Gungeon with goofy boss names like Bodyboulder, and other times it feels like it wants to be dark and edgy like Dead Cells or Sundered with that feeling of being lost or hopeless. Interestingly Dead Cells pulls off dark and humorous very well, and from what I can tell watching old footage, even very early in development it had that kind of ethos. Not saying it's easy to pull off that kind of tone, but Scourgebringer kind of feels like it's reaching beyond its station when it comes to writing. It's also pretty apparent that there is a language barrier and that the writer/s' first language isn't English, and it seems to stand in the way of whatever tone the game is trying to get across. Hopefully in a full release there will be some better localization and maybe the tone will become better established, but currently the writing and tone are definitely the roughest part of this game.

Definitely still recommend it to any lovers of platforming and roguelites, but perhaps purchase and wait till full release to play.

ScourgeBringer still is in Early Access, but already offers an amazing and polished experience. Combat is in the core of the game, and it's like Celeste mixed with Katana Zero and Dead Cells, in a fast-paced platformer. For now, the game is relatively short but the roadmap is crystal clear about the future updates adding content until release. I recommend it because it truly is an indie gem.

I feel like this game is right up my alley for games i would like...but although the style and fluid movement are a great building block, they can't carry the frantic combat. I feel like most of combat feels like mashing attacks until things are dead with very little feedback. There is not enough variety in combat at the moment to recommend. I'm sure the game with continue to improve in early access but there is still quite some way to go.

Scourgebringer has a rad style and a lot of potential with what it brings in gameplay. At the best times is super fast, fun, stylish and impactful, at the worst times its chaotic, frustrating and tedious. I feel the game could benefit from so many simple things that ive seen in other roguelikes. The health system is not forgiving in the slightest, its a common occurrence to not get 1 health drop for a whole level, and the shops dont help much either since i find myself spending a whole third of my currency for 1 hit point back, and this is a game where you can lose 4 in a single bullet storm. The fact that the abilities, while a good edition, dont add nearly enough unique aspects to each run to be fun. Maybe im just very bad at the game and the devs are focusing on a more challenging experience? Im personally hoping its just a quirk of it being in early access, and full release will see positive changes.

If i were to recommend some changes: more frequent health drops/ regen over time, more diverse abilities at the altars, have a second possible stage for the first level

This game mixes the clean movement style of Celeste, the satisfying combat of Katana Zero with roguelike elements from Monolith, but makes it it's own.

The gameplay feels SO GOOD, so clean and precise. The game gives you so much freedom to move and to attack anyway you want and with this comes a great feeling of satisfaction and also obsession to perform every level with perfect movement and as fast as possible.

The game its on early access because of how much content it has at the moment but dont be scare by this, the content its enough to be a complete game. It's no bugs or weird stuff.

i'll say that paying for this game its the perfect way to help the devs and get a game that it is going to get really big and really good for a lower price.

The only problem i found its the music when fighting, its this intense metal music that somehow seems to not fit really well, however you can mute the music and put the OST of Futy and there you have it, the perfect music to kill everything that moves.

Controls and gameplay are extremely tight. The pixel-art-style and animations are beautiful. During this stage in early access the only problem is that it seems a bit lacking in content. After 5 or so hours you sort of feel done with it. At its price point it's very much worth it, because those 5 hours are immensely fun, but do not go in expecting a fully fleshed out rouge-lite.

Feels great at first, game is beaten within the first 2 or 3 hours. (at least for now)
But when it comes to a roguelike, it fails terribly in the sense that every run I've played is the same.
You dash around, smash around a little bit to interrupt enemies... and sometimes you unload all those gun munitions for bursts of damage on bosses. Annnnd that's it. That's all there is.

You approach all enemies the same. And interupt them all the same. The perks you gain does not change the way you play, it's just some upsides you add along the way. (except that one perk that makes you reflect bullets)
Then you find some shrines that presents you 3 choices (Now we're talking roguelike!) But there's so little interesting picks to take. And so few that you've seen them all in the first hour. And again, not affecting your gameplay.

I think the problem lies with the basic controls. It's the core thing and it's not there to change. You can change guns (And i think it's the most game altering thing there is), but you can stick with the starting gun since it's really good. And changing feels most of the time less efficient.
The other big problem I've noticed is.. that the perks you get to upgrade into at the start of the run? Well, they should be stuff you acquire during the run. Right now it's: ''you died, now it's slightly easier.'' Probably to enhance that progression kind of feel which I find unnecessary in that genre.

TLDR: Game is the same every run, short and progression is not within the run itself.
4.5/10.

Holy wow, I just started playing and like... it's a high octane slashy slashy that feels kinda like a roguelike platformer version of Hyper Light Drifter, but it has enough of it's own stuff to make it unique and fun. Great game already, and it's not even out of early access. Please get.

I want to preface that I still enjoyed the game and have high hopes for its future because the game's core mechanics are pretty fun and It looks awesome. The problem for me it there is not much diversity to game play and the advanced technique of spamming dash, gun, sword, and that stunning attack is enough to kill all bosses in a matter of seconds. It took me 3 hours to beat the game (to it's current point) and while it was fun during that time I don't think it's worth the 15 bucks as it currently is.

That said, this is what i think could be improved off the top of my head:
- implement different types of melee weapons (because I'm getting bored of the stabby sword)
that have different attack speeds, ranges, and effects.
- make it more penalizing to spam all your abilities at the same time.
- improvement to the items that drop and the totem buff things because I'll be honest, it
doesn't feel any different to play the game if you have 20 buffs or having none.
- add in a hard mode

Zitat:

ScourgeBringer is a super fluid roguelite 2D action platformer that happens to be very polished at this time for what is available (Beta v1.04 as of writing, 3 fully developed zones out of 6 planned). More importantly, it is just a lot of fun to play. Despite that it's in Early Access, the combat mechanics feel so seasoned and well-done that you would be hard pressed to point out any problems with it.

My experience is limited to my short amount of time spent so far (2.5 hours) and I have not yet cleared the 3rd available area. I see someone wrote that they cleared the whole game after 5 tries. I guess my skills are just much lacking in comparison. I have played probably 20 times so far and only managed to get into the 3rd zone once.

ScourgeBringer has a story, though that's limited currently to a few well-drawn artwork pages when you start into your save. I enjoy games that have a nice story or rich lore, but this game really doesn't need it.

Without a doubt, the platforming will remind many players of Celeste with its fast-paced movement and tight jumping. Everything flows so well, both in and out of combat.

Aerial combat in 2D platforming is often neglected, and perhaps it becomes difficult to get the progressively unrealistic mechanics to feel natural and right in the hands of the player. This game has perhaps one of the best aerial combat mechanics I have seen in recent years. You can, at times, maim a whole roomful of enemies (usually 1-2 waves) without touching the ground. There is just something really satisfying and fun about it.

Another thing to note is that you always have a ranged/gun weapon equipped aside from your sword. And combat on ground or in air using melee with intermittent gun fire transition between themselves seamlessly. So not only is aerial combat done well and feels right in the melee aspect, you can spice up your attacks with some bullets too!

For many players, it's inevitable that you will compare Dead Cells to this game in terms of combat flow. This game may not have as much content and as much variety, but the combat does not feel inferior to Dead Cells in anyway. And its aerial combat mechanics is really nonpareil--to me anyway.

Relying on reflexes is important in this game, but so is an additional knowledge about the game through repetitive motions of playing and replaying. This gets down to the replay value of such a game, which seems to me to be pretty good. The rooms are pre-made although the way that the zones spawn their rooms are randomized, thus making it important for the player to explore each game. The other aspect of the game that increases the replay value is the skill/passive tree that you can unlock progressively by playing and beating mini and main bosses.

Sure, the game has its flaws, mostly in the variety category. You can expect 1 of each special room to show up in each zone, shop, altar/pillar for the Gift of Blood (choice of 3 upgrades for that run), mini boss, and main boss (room can only be opened after the mini boss is destroyed). The individual rooms are pre-made so you do start getting used to them over time. In addition, the shop items and Gift of Blood choices seem to repeat and cycle through a fairly small number of selections.

All in all, I am very much looking forward to seeing where this game will go from here. I think the developers really did a great job at hammering out undesirable details before releasing it into Early Access. I have, so far, found absolutely no problems or bugs so far.

Are you on the fence? Definitely check this one out!

Controls

Plays great with a gamepad, as I prefer to play almost all of my 2D platforming games. Kudos to the developers for giving the players functional movement with boy D-Pad and Joystick.

Graphics

The 2D pixelated artwork is rather well done, the game is quite beautiful to behold. V-sync option available.

Music & Sounds

The soundtrack sounds awesome, with the right pacing to accompany the rapid movement and action.

Audience

For people who enjoy a good 2D action platformer, you will not be disappointed with ScourgeBringer.

Pricing

$14.99 launching into Early Access is perhaps a bit high for some people. But I am telling you right here and now that these developers did their homework, and the game plays beautifully and is really fun. There will be more content to come, so expect the price to go up a little with additional updates. (Early Access page indicates plans to keep it below $20 overall.)

There is a launch week 10% discount and additional 10% for folks who own Dead Cells that is still going on. So I encourage anyone thinking about it to jump in on the action! Worth the price I say!

Positives

+A combat system that stands out as being very well polished and super tight
+Interesting platforming mechanics that feel right
+Progressive unlockable skill/passive tree to change the way you play as you get more or more used to the game
+Excellent music
+Fantastic 2D pixel art
+Nice in-game seamless feedback system
+Accessible to people who may not wish to play the game at the intended pace with speed-adjustment options
+Most importantly, this game is just so much fun

Neutral

=Current content has 3 zones, which is enough for me, but can feel really short to some people. There are a few more planned, so this is just part of the growing pains of a game in Early Access.

Negatives

-Variety of items found in shop is a little lacking (I saw the same items over and over again)
-Similar to above, Gift of Blood choices could use some more variety
-Very limited trap design and use in the individual rooms

Conclusion

ScourgeBringer brings quite another nice addition for people who enjoy action platformers. While it may be in Early Access, the game already has excellent movement and combat systems in place to make the action platforming feel oh-so-good. If you are on the fence, definitely take a look at this game, for you will not be disappointed.

With such a solid foundation, ScourgeBringer will surely realize a brighter future.

200 character summary

Scourgebringer is a superb real time tactical slash and shoot roguelite, Controls are super fast and fluent, It requires catlike reflexes and everything from the game to the UI looks just amazing.

Story 8/10

The story is about a thing that came from the sky and burns everything, Nobody knows why but they call it the Scourgebringer, Many people tried to go in, but no one came back out. You play as Kyhra, The last Light. It is your turn to try and stop the Scourgebringer. You are the only hope, the final chance. The story plays out as a slideshow in the beginning, There is not much to it in the game, But there is a backstory and a goal, I think some lore would greatly benefit the story But the game certainly doesn't let the story get in the way of the gameplay.

Gamemodes 7/10

There is just the single player game, You start at the skill tree and when you go into the portal you start a run, When you die you are at the skill tree again. It surely would benefit from some customization and different gamemodes

Gameplay 9/10

The gameplay is amazing, It is fast, you can use your gun your sword you can dash you can do a heavy hit which reflects projectiles, Kyhra does exactly what you tell her to do, There are 2 different types of currency, Blood and eye/coin type thingies. Blood will be lost when you die and the eye coins will remain you can use these to unlock upgrades on the skill tree, These unlocks will remain unlocked, It doesn't matter how often you die. All items you pick up or buy in the runs are lost when you die, They can offer some nice boosts, But many feel a bit underwhelming, They also drop very rarely but are pretty cheap at the shop.

The game starts in the first biome, Every Biome has a bunch of normal rooms, and 1 of each of the following rooms, A starter, Shop, Altar, Mini Boss and a Boss. The Starter room is where you start, Where it is and where the other rooms are is completely random generated as far as I know. You can buy 3 items at the shop if you have enough blood. You can get 1 out of 3 random upgrades at the Altar and You need to kill the mini boos before you can enter the final boss room. If you kill the boss a portal will appear to go to the next biome. You can go back to clean up things you might have missed, So it doesn't hurt to kill the boss if you get the chance.

The game has several attacking mechanics, You must use the room to your advantage, You can shoot but you need to get melee hits to reload, Enemies flash a little exclamation mark to signal they are about to attack, In this timeframe you can hit them with a heavy melee attack which will stun them. While enemies are stunned they are easy targets. You can deflect most attacks and push around enemies with the heavy melee attack, It gets tactical finding out the fastest way to clear a room without taking damage, Because health is scarce, You can get lucky at an altar, But this sacrifices a nice upgrade opportunity.

Aesthetics 9/10

The game looks just amazing, The colorschemes in each biome, The enemies, NPCs, It is all very coherent, The animation is perfect, especially if you take a closer look at Kyhra, You can even slow down the game to really appreciate the animations. The soundtrack is good too but it lacks a bit in variation at this point, I do think each biome has a very nice and distinct soundtrack.

Performance 7/10

I saw a few bugs here and there, Nothing major, At the press any button to start screen it takes a while before it registers any input, This is new since version 1.03, I did not have this before, I also had a boss glitching out of the screen in the middle of the battle, I could still kill him with a special ability And I am sure these issues will be ironed out, The game runs at a solid 2000+ fps, There is Vsync support if you like to give your GPU a break.

Replayability 8/10

With a bit of luck you can complete the game in 5 minutes in its current state. So it is very short for now, But even in this state it is very enjoyable, The rooms are not random generated, But the map is, So you might see some familiar rooms after a while, but you will never know where the bosses are. The bosses will remain the same in each biome and the monster placement is the same in rooms that are the same. There is a lot that can be improved here but I am sure it will improve with every major update.

Improvements

Ofcourse I would love to see more Biomes, Maybe even in a random order (or choice from 2 random biomes) where it keeps getting harder with different difficulity levels for each biome depending on which stage it is for you.

I feel with a controller it is hard to aim with the gun because it shoots directly when you want to aim, It is even so sensitive that you shoot the other way if you let go of your joystick when aiming the other way

I would also love to see a lot more items with much variation in what they do, A bigger skill tree, and maybe mod support? It could also benefit from more gamemodes, Daily runs? Custom Seeds? Custom runs? Boss Rush mode?

Early Access

The game is still in Early Access, It just released actually, It only has 3 biomes, 3 bosses and only 4 branches on the skill tree, The Roadmap has not been published yet, But I can see this becoming a masterpiece. I will update the review when I feel a lot has changed or when it leaves EA.

Conclusion 8/10

People say it is a mix between Celeste and Dead Cells, But It is not a platformer nor a metroidvania, I can still see where they are coming from, The single screen action and dashing from Celeste, the fast combat and perma death from Dead Cells. For now it is obvious that it is not a finished game, But it already gives a sneak peak of what it will become. If you like fast paced action and like the idea of a mix between the 2 mentioned games It is certainly worth picking up right now.

I've spent 2 hours with this game, but I already know mechanics-wise it's become one of my favorites. There's some things I wish could be improved (which I list below), but none of them take away from my enjoyment of the game. The jumping feels very precise (like Celeste) and it is incredibly easy to feel badass. If you watch gameplay videos it looks cool, but actually playing it feels great once you've gone through your 5th room taking no damage, dash attacking, deflecting bullets, and shooting an enemy across the room. There's something wonderful as well about combo-ing on a difficult enemy and having an enemy try to sneak a shot at you, and you time it perfectly to send it right back at them. The game oozes with style and the mechanics are simple but extremely fun.

It's not a perfect game, but what's there is an amazing foundation that I think could put it up there with some indie favorites like Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, Celeste (the latter being the easiest comparison). Some of the gripes I do have with the game:

-Knowing when you have you dash or slam/heavy attacks isn't as clear as I'd like at times. The time between each is fairly short, so this is by no means a huge issue, and if nothing were to get changed about this, it wouldn't detract any enjoyment from the game whatsoever.
-Mobility is huge in this game, particularly with your double jump, and sometimes it's just hard to tell when you have a double jump available. Making the comparison to Celeste again, but when her dash was used up, her hair went back to being red. Something visual on the character would definitely help me, but it's also incredibly easy to get a jump back, and the dash is on a short cool down. So with how long you can spend combo-ing enemies, you'll certainly have a jump and dash ready to go.
-The heavy/impact attack's deflect ability has some weird frames that really throws me off sometimes. There are sometimes where I've been in fights (notably the first judge fight) where I used it, but in the last couple frames of the move, the enemy's shot went through. I don't know what it is, but visually it throws me off and I sometimes get caught making this mistae. Nine times out of ten it's fine and I can time it right, but for moves where it's a stream of bullets (3-4 in a row, I find the attack lets the last one going through. So, if anything, if you get the game, just be wary of how those attacks are coming at you.

Overall, this game is just super fun and feels extremely satisfying. My hand was legitimately hurting because of all the precise movements I was trying to pull off (so maybe checking the box for holding the attack button in Accessibility settings isn't a bad idea at all lol). I'm still struggling to get past the second boss, but the mechanics are fun enough that I enjoy fighting similar enemies. It's still early access, but for only $12 on sale, I can already see myself getting my money's worth.

Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam.

Is this game a masterpiece? No, not yet, it is still in Early Access. Is it good? Is it fun? YEEEESSS to both questions!

It is another roguelike action platformer. Enter a room, the doors close and enemies spawn. Kill them all, and the doors open. Go to the next room and repeat. Until you reach a merchant. Or a boss. Sometimes you find upgrades on the way. When you die, you respawn in a hub and have to start again.

What I really love abot the game is it's fluid, fast, stay-off-the-ground combat. As long as you keep hitting enemies you stay in the air, and if you combine it with the all-direction, indefinitely available dash you can stay in the air until every foe is vanquished. You can also run up walls. And shoot, as long as you have ammo. Really cool!

You are not invincible during a dash, otherwise the game would be too easy. There are permanent upgrades to unlock in the hub, random dungeons, and the game comes with perfect gamepad support.

Conclusion:
Promising, fast paced roguelike platformer with tons of enemies to slash.

It is not a particularly hard game unlike what some of the reviews are saying. But it is a lot of fun and honestly it feels more like hyper light drifter and celeste mixed than dead cells. The only deadcells esque thing is its main hub shop.

For 10-15$ this is a great game.

Fantastic rogue-lite game here focused on fast, frenetic action.
The pixel work is great, the meta progression is great ( you collect orbs to unlock perma sklills in the hub )
Every boss you can defeat opens another branch on the tree ( up to 3 branches so far )

The game can be rather difficult, and rather easy, depending on your skill level, and what skills you have unlocked.
Regardless, you're gonna have fun with it either way.
