The story is fun and the gameplay is solid. The biggest problem Scarlett Hood, as mentioned by many reviews before this, is the game does not explain or give enough clues to solve many of the problems. This is a real problem when you advertise the game as a puzzler. Playing becomes a lesson in frustration as you scour the level for details on how to solve a problem, only to turn to Youtube to find the solution.

I've really enjoyed the art and story for Scarlet Hood. its a fun little adventure with charm and humor. Haven't finished it yet , but I have enjoyed the game so far. It controls well and the puzzles haven't been impossible. they make sense if you put some thought into it. Theres been a few instances where i would have to play again to go back and choose a different path , so it looks like you cant get all possibilities in one play through.
Fairytale-themed games have been doing extremely well in recent years, just think of The Wolf Among Us and the Fable series. Devespresso has created an original puzzle point-and-click game called Scarlet Hood and the Wicked Wood with a 'Groundhog Day' approach. The cool humor and original art style made me curious, but is the full game experience worth it as well?
Scarlet Hood and the Wicked Wood has clearly gotten their inspiration from The Wizard of Oz. Our protagonist is the lead singer of a Kentucky punk band. After their last performance, she is offered a fantastic solo contract. The catch? The rest of the band members are not allowed to know about it, according to the record company they are just stopping her from becoming really great… Scarlet turns out not to be a bad liar and everyone immediately finds out. She is left next to the hall where she just played the tiles from the roof. It is storming and it is raining cats and dogs. Before she realizes it, she is taken in a tornado to a parallel fairytale universe where she meets numerous famous figures ...

I don't think we're in Kansas anymore...

In this world she experiences the same day again and again. Such a 'Groundhog Day' concept only works for me if there is enough variation and if the dialogues are perfect. And unfortunately that is not the case here. Not that they are bad, just not that memorable or spectacular. What does deserve compliments is the partial voice acting. Wow! I never expected to see such a good voice cast in a point-and-click game. Dialogues are fluid and feel natural. Partly at least, because more than half of the dialogues can only be consumed via text.

The gameplay is not quite different from what you expect from a classic point-and-click game: solving puzzles, searching for things in each level to help you solve those puzzles and sometimes chilling a gruesome monster. Some of those puzzles were beyond me and prevented me from continuing. I don't normally shy away from a puzzle game and I certainly don't mind grabbing a walkthrough if necessary, but then it also has to make sense in the end. Scarlet Hood sometimes misses a few hints or simple logic in almost every puzzle and that was a big downside for me.
A puzzle game without hints or simple logic? No thanks.
What really makes this game so much fun is the unique and beautiful 2D art style. It really feels like a fairytale book come to life. Each character exudes its own individuality and is fantastically drawn. Just like the different levels: forests are dark, snow plains deserted and chilly. The music is also very well chosen, the jazz influences suit this setting surprisingly well. If you hadn't already noticed: I think the art direction is one of the biggest assets of Scarlet Hood and the Wicked Wood. Frolicking through the woods with Scarlet in lingerie is something you will not soon forget. Unfortunately, the main thing you'll remember will be the horrible puzzles...

Conclusion
Scarlet Hood and the Wicked Wood could have been a great game if the creators had spent more time digging into the puzzles. Too often it is unclear what to do or how to proceed in the story. In terms of soundtrack and graphics, we are here with a topper. While that's not enough to recommend the game in its entirety, you'll soon enough be annoyed by the substandard gameplay.

Pros
- Beautiful 2D art style
- Great soundtrack

Cons
- Dialogues could be better
- Missing hints and logic for certain puzzles
- Weak plot

Fun, if a bit short. Characters and situations you find yourself in are some of the best parts, comedy with slight horror elements. Replayable though since you can have various different ways of solving things with different endings. Gotta enjoy Puzzling at least a bit, since those are spread throughout the game. Near the very end they also increase in intensity and feel a bit forced.

Scarlet Hood and the Wicked Wood (from now on SH) is a modern retelling of the classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It’s a delightful point and click game with a significant number of puzzles. The visual and audio design, the writing and a solid gameplay make of SH an excellent product I would recommend to anyone, patient enough to take notes, without hesitation.

Pros

✓ Beautiful art and sound design
✓ An engaging story with well written and partially voiced dialogues
✓ Multiple solutions and endings
✓ A big array of puzzles
✓ Random enemy encounters make the gameplay varied

Story

The charming and energetic protagonist, Scarlet is a rising star of the music industry and part of a band with her male friends. As they approach with their van what could be the performance of their lifetime, and possibly grant them a contract, there is a risk of rain and cyclone. The concert is so well received that the blonde Kentucky girl peaks a producer’s interest and is called to discuss their career in private. The news, however, is not all positive and now Scarlet is facing a tough choice between her future and her friendships.

Unfortunately she’s not very good at making decisions or lying and isn’t able to hide that she wasn’t able to straight up refuse the sweet offer. This results in the group breaking apart and in a silent, tense trip back. She also ends up being left alone in the middle of the highway, during a weather emergency: and just like with Dorothy, a magical cyclone surprises and transports her to a land far away.

When she wakes up she meets an adorable fox who’ll be her guide in this new reality she’s now stuck in. Apparently she fell from the sky, damaging a wagon and ended up trapped in a cave with the animal and a Munchkin boy. More so, to the latter she looks like a witch, thing that to her own surprise is confirmed soon enough.
And so with her incomplete Witch Regalia - a headdress in the form of an adorable red hood, her Womping Stick and just one of her ruby heels - she’s able to start her adventure in this crazy world.

As a powerful witch and wagon destroyer she’ll now escort the Munchkin entourage to the royal coronation. First however, they’ll have to cross the forest, claimed by the nefarious Black Witch as her territory. Thanks to a hex cast by the previous witch, Scarlet has a chance to overcome all the difficulties. Each time her life would have ended, she instead just wakes up again and again, each time having an opportunity to undermine her nemesis’ attempts at crushing her.

Scarlet goes by her day by wandering around the forest around the trail. While she explores she also uncovers more about the witches and weird critters like dodos and flying monkeys. Through the notes scattered around the world the player can read more about the environment and get some important tips. Each section has two possible ways to solve it - either by helping out one of the three allies that will come to the girl’s rescue, or by completing a main task.

All will lead to a final duel against the Black Witch, however, the ending details will depend on the choices made throughout the journey. With the truth out of the bag, Scarlet will now return to her world and face it with a renewed resolution. But remember, ain’t rest for the weary!

Gameplay

This is a classic point and click game with puzzles, comparable in quality and variety to big and successful titles like Deponia. SH follows the classic formula of finding items that will help the protagonist solve problems, mixed with brain-teasers.
For those a notebook will be needed! The clues are often scattered throughout a scene and the game also offers more complex riddles. There is a lot of different kinds of puzzles that, even if sometimes repurposed twice or thrice, will still feel fresh. I really liked all the different ways to open the doors, those were the most entertaining puzzles for me.

It’s not all fun and games though, the map is filled with enemies that have either to be avoided or womped with magic. Scarlet has a lifepool of five hearts, those can be restored using food that can be either gathered or bought from the merchant.
She can hold up to six consumables at a time, which feels just right. All the herbs have different effects, like removing the poison shot by monkeys’ blowguns, or allowing a faster stamina regeneration.
Magic power is regenerated through crystals, but there aren’t a lot of them on the map, perhaps because the Womping Stick can be also used to discover secrets. The key items’ inventory can’t be accessed directly, as the items are used automatically in their assigned interactions.

Surprisingly enough there are also a few action sequences, as Scarlet is being chased by the Brer Wolf whose only intent is to kill. The player will have to run from the beast and hide, by turning into a totem, when possible.

The player can also use a map that charts all of its segments, significant locations as well as Scarlet’s current whereabouts. The map though doesn’t show any other details and the player might want to, once again, use a notebook.

Issues

I’ve had the game crashing during loading screens, but a new patch should have fixed this bug. That was the only bug I encountered during my experience with SH.

Specs of the computer used:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 4820K
16 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 1080

Art

Everything in this game is extremely pleasing to look at. The character design is gorgeous, colorful and full of life. The dialogue portraits are full of emotion and gestures, they feel like they’ve all been drawn fully from scratch. What I loved the most were the sparkles of excitement in the eyes of the characters when they were excited. The backgrounds are pretty and fit in beautifully. Some animations don’t seem that refined, but it’s not a problem since they’re all smooth. The dodge movement though is exceptional: it’s full of movement and the swirling of the cape is mesmerizing.
The “bonus” gallery contains some beautiful illustrations and pictures of a model in the Scarlet’s costume that the developers built for one of the trailers.

The sound effects and track work really well and are carefully built, too; the menu music in particular is a lounge old-timey feeling melody that will easily charge the player with energy, the little jumps of the Brer Fox is accompanied by a joyful and soft sound.
Although not all interactions are voiced, when they are it is done beautifully. The dialogues sound like a real conversation and the player might not even realize that the only voice they’ll hear is the talented Hillary Hawkins, borrowing her amazing southern accent to Scarlet.

Final Verdict

This is a game I would suggest to anyone interested in the genre, puzzles or even its charming design. It is beautiful, fun, the riddles are well-made and satisfying, the narrative is surprising and engaging. It introduces new mechanics to this genre, without distancing itself from the original. I consider this one of the best point and click games I've ever played.

Playing SH for the first time should take a minimum of around four hours, depending on the player's ability. However, it is worth being replayed at least once to get a desired ending and search for things the player might have missed previously. Considering the quality of the game, the full price is a good deal.

From the developers of The Coma series comes a fun and adventurous game about Scarlett Hood. A girl who was initially in a band but has now somehow been transported into a fabled and wicked woods, filled with cute munchkins and fairytale like characters. The gameplay plays as the character reliving and going through the same day over and over, and the quest is to guide yourself and your 'band' out of the woods. Because of there being multiple endings, there is some replayability in going through it again to progress through them all, facing the goods ends and the bad ends. If you've played the previous The Coma games, you'll be much familiar with the artstyle and the gamestyle. The art has the well hand-drawn, colourful animated visuals with charming details to the background environments. The movements are in 2D kind of style where the character moves left and right the screen, interacting with what is in the environment and on screen. Interacting with other characters and solving the puzzles through the game is what makes the game fun. There is also the delightful dialogue to be read, whether it be with the friends or the enemies in the game. Overall, it is a wonderful adventurous game for those who enjoy some fantastical story.

A splash of Wizard of Oz, a blop of Red Riding Hood, and a dash of some southern accents

Scarlet Hood and the Wicked Wood follows, you guessed it, Scarlet who dreams to be the star she believes she was meant to be. She happens to have gathered herself one heck of a band, calling themselves Foxtrot Bop, and they got their first big gig! Not to mention that they have a chance of being signed a deal as an agent (Savannah) from Wicked Records would be there. While they did end up being late and the threat of a tornado loomed over them, they managed to arrive just in the nick of time. And good thing too! Everyone there loved them, especially Savannah. However, Savannah only wants to bring in Scarlet and have her play with some people she already gathered. Conflicted, not knowing whether she should take the deal or stay with her talented boys, Scarlet tries to tell her band, only for them to find out and react in the very way she feared. They wouldn’t even let her get any word in! Despite not letting Scarlet explain the situation or realizing that she hasn’t even signed the contract (which, you can’t blame her if she does now), they leaves her all alone on the road. Well, except that tornado.

Much like Dorothy, this tornado ends up throwing Scarlet into a strange world that she soon learns is called Glome. It doesn’t take long for Scarlet to run into the, erm, skeleton of the old Red Witch and deemed as the new one and gets decked out with the signature cloak, Whomping Stick where the source of her new powers will resonate, and sadly only one heel (she’ll have to make do). She also finds herself protecting a Munchkin troupe, due to her ruining their safe passage, as they now how to go through the dreaded Wicked Wood where the Black Witch, Lefaba, will surely attack. And well, she does. Good thing Scarlet is experiencing some time loop (or recursion hex as it’s called here) or else she would be flat as a pancake.

So first order of business, find a way to get around Lefaba’s army with everyone unscathed. And to do that, she must go through various areas and find a way to get past the current roadblock. You can talk to Pippa, the fairy that more or less forced to help you, to get some ideas, but you must figure it out once you get in. Where you’ll be able to explore some really beautiful areas where you’ll find some puzzles that you have to solve and find some items (though, you’ll have to keep an eye out as the indicator is easy to miss). Some items are needed to progress through puzzles, but you can find consumables that will heal your wounds, afflictions, or help with Scarlet’s stamina; well hidden coins; mana gems that will show hidden interactions and the way characters went for a short time; and notes that give you more lore on the area and on where Seelie Shrines are (little tip, you need to use mana gems to find half of the ones in Lilliput Trail as they’re hidden from sight).

Of course, Lefaba won’t just let you wander around. Enemies will pop up every so often and won’t hesitate to hitting you if you’re caught in their line of sight. There are Dobodos on the ground with their menacing weapons, Monkeytas in the trees with their darts that will aim if you stand on the “X”s on the ground, and worse of all the Brer Wolf that will show up after you meet a certain criteria and will hunt you down. With only 5 hearts, you do have some wiggle room, but you can get your max health lowered temporarily or even poisoned. Luckily, there are ways to stay safe. As long as you have enough stamina, you can dash past these guys or use your evade move. The Brer Wolf, though, requires you to turn into a totem, but make sure you don’t do it in front of him as he’ll still attack totem you (and you don’t get knocked out of it when he does). It’s also best to keep an eye on your stamina, as running out will cause Scarlet to be too tired to even walk at her normal pace for a couple seconds. Using a mana gem will also attack Dobodos. To be honest, I didn’t really have much troubles with this unless I was being especially reckless. But if you happen to be, you can use the coins you find to purchase some more consumables if the free ones you’ll come across runs out quick.

In terms of puzzles, they range from easy to pretty hard. There are some that are easy to figure out and understand, others that you’ll know what to do but are hard in terms of requiring you to take into account multiple aspects (like making the making the needed pattern without any redundancies while keeping track of the wires connecting to the section that you need to do), to ones that don’t really make sense even when you have an explanation on what you’re meant to do.

Each of these areas actually have 3 different ways that you can find to get past your current roadblock. With each route having their own specific puzzles that you won’t come across if you go with a different choice and has a different outcome. Though, if you’re dead set on a specific solution, you do have to go through parts of others to get the needed items. You can either rescue the hero that found themselves trapped in that area by helping them recover, complete the Seelie Shrines (which require you to grab all of the associated notes even if you already know where it is) and power up your Whomping Stick, or do an alternate solution (which I’ll call trick). Once you complete one of these solutions, the chapter will end and you won’t be able to go back in so make sure you got everything you wanted.

This has a total of 10 endings you can get, with 8 of them having achievements attached to them. What you end up doing in each of the 3 areas will determine the ending you’ll get. If you rescued all of the heroes, if you only rescued one, if you did the Seelie Shrines, if you did the tricks, or a combination of solutions all have different endings attached to them which ultimately decide the fate of LeFaba, what Scarlet’s decision on that contract of hers and how that plays out, and the possibility of seeing what the heroes end up doing and if Scarlet reconciles with her bandmates. There is even an ending that sheds a bit more light on one aspect of the story that’s hinted at in the notes you can collect. However, for anyone that wants to see all of the endings, this will involve you replaying from the beginning. Well, almost beginning if you’re smart about it. As someone who has seen 8 of the 10 endings, do I recommend doing this? Well… not unless you want all of the achievements. I’d say at least get the endings where you have all of the same solutions so you can see all of the puzzles. Though, if you do want to get the majority of the endings, I do suggest advancing through Wispy Woods until you have all 3 possible solutions all ready to go, save, and keep that save intact. That way, you don’t have to do the whole prologue over and over again as well as this first area.

Scarlet Hood and the Wicked Wood also ends on a note that gives it room for a sequel if the developers want to revisit this universe and show us who the other 5 witches are. Considering the endings show Scarlet’s success and relationships with her bandmates and they’re all pretty different depending on the ending, this will either result in one ending being the canon one (which, I can guess which one that would be) or have it focus on another character with Scarlet making an appearance. I wouldn’t be opposed to a sequel especially if it means that we’ll get to see the other witches, but I guess time will tell if we’ll be getting a sequel.

It's a fun game with some really gorgeous art. Though some of the puzzles can be a bit vague and the clues can be really confusing (I still have no idea how I solved the last bull's gate puzzle, random attempts did it for me).

Also, the entire story of the opening segment feels mostly unrelated to the rest of the game.

But all in all, it's a good game with some really good visual treat and decent story.

Randomly crashes on loading screens which then makes you have to repeat your progress. Happens very often.

I do wish there was a scaling review system on steam instead of yes or no, because overall the music, art, story, and puzzles are pretty solid.

I think consistent crashing is a pretty big issue that prevents me from giving it a yes though.

Also with achievements requiring multiple playthroughs, you should really consider making cutscenes skippable to speed up the progress.

It may say Wicked, but it's not always wicked.

Full review: https://www.keengamer.com/articles/reviews/pc-reviews/scarlet-hood-and-the-wicked-wood-review-kentucky-fied-trickin/

Devespresso Games' attempt in bringing fairy tales to life in their own way is an admirable, if not entirely original effort. With a solid array of puzzles and poppy visuals, there's enough to like throughout that will eagerly please those fond of Point & Click-likes of yesteryear. Though the choice to forego Early Access may come across in the game's technical details, with some rough patches performance-wise being noticeable. With other features feeling underwhelming and perhaps a lack of solid identity, this modern tale is best served for those fresh to the genre.

+ Puzzles are straightforward, fun, and generally logical
+ Has a nice, colorful expressiveness to its art direction
+ Encourages replayability with its content structure

- Writing is generally so-so
- Not always technically sound
- Combat + Items implementation feels too exploitable

This a fun little game. The puzzles aren't mind boggling, but they aren't trivial either. It can take some thought to get through them, though all the clues necessary to solve them are generally located nearby. Each area is fairly short, but there are multiple ways to get through them so the game actually has some replayability.

The art is great and the controls are intuitive. Overall it's a very well made game. The story is pretty straightforward though. I could see the plot twist coming well before it happened. But still overall I liked it. I'll play it again to get the other endings, but maybe not immediately.
