Über das Spiel

SÆLIG is a game that blends together elements of simulation, strategy, RPG, and business management. Centred around the life of you and your family, you must try to survive and bring wealth and prosperity to your household. Set in Dark Ages England, you will enter the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex during a time of turmoil where you will choose your path and do what you must to make your mark on the world around you, for generations to come.

There are many different ways you can approach the game, and ways you can play, including the following:
  • Start the game as an Employee, Travelling Trader, Landlord, Business Owner, Hunter, Beggar, or just start with a house and some gold.
  • No matter how you start you can make your own path.
  • Find love, start a family and begin your dynasty.
  • Become an Abbot and run the church, or a guard captain and be above the law.
  • Get a job and go to work every day for a handful of coins.
  • Become a gravedigger and make your wage sending off the dead. Or maybe you want to be work at the Learning Hall and look after the village children.
  • Forage for supplies and sell them to market.
  • Trade between markets.
  • Buy huts and houses and rent them out.
  • Buy and run businesses to supply the town with much needed goods.
  • Buy land and develop it into new buildings to help the town grow.
  • Destroy the economy, start fires, hoard food, and watch the world burn.
  • Become a bit of a thug and steal your way to riches.
  • Defend against Viking raids.

Some other key features
  • A living, breathing world, where each character is trying to survive and prosper.
  • Each character has their own life from start to finish and has the potential to shape the world around them, just like you.
  • Live through several generations – when you die, you can continue as one of your children.
  • Dynamic seasons and weather that affects the world around you.
  • Lots of different types of buildings to, build, purchase, and upgrade.
  • Fires and diseases have the potential to not only decimate your home, but also towns and villages all over the map.
  • Living economy - nothing simply exists, everything is made and consumed by the population.
  • A knowledge system where most actions can be improved on by doing them.

SÆLIG is a hobby project and is currently in Early Access, which means it is still under development, is not feature complete, and there can be bugs. But I love this game and I love what I'm doing with it. I hope you can join me on this journey and have a great time playing.

Abend

Tolles Spiel, aber jetzt muß wirklich was kommen.

Imagine a world, where women are willing to settle down and have kids in their early 20s. Where marriage can actually last your entire life. Where you, by yourself, at the ripe young age of 18 can start with very little or even nothing, and not only survive--but eventually build up enough income to buy your own home long before you die of old age. Your own properties, businesses. Where you and your family can prosper and secure your futures without being driven into the ground by your government. Crazy, right? Well that's the power of video games, friend. 10/10

--Honestly, I'm always apprehensive about buying a Unity engine game because they usually run like garbage. But this one runs buttery smooth for me, which is amazing. And at $10-$20, this game is an absolute steal. If you can't get a ton of playtime from it or keep yourself entertained, the game probably wasn't what you were looking for to begin with. I recommend checking out gameplay on YT or something first, as always.

I've seen where the developer has questioned where he should take the game in the future, whether he should push for 1.0 soon, etc. All I can say is, maybe take some inspiration from the Mount & Blade games. The "life sim" aspect feels super fleshed out already, and other than some polish or other little tidbits like maybe setting fish traps or small game traps, I think I'd (personally) mostly just want to see more warfare systems. Raiding, maybe being able to not only start as a Dane, but join the Danes in raids and warfare. Den of thieves being able to run subterfuge against enemy kingdoms. Kennels/pets, war dogs, hunting dogs. More animal variety/spawns for hunting (so far I've only seen 1 fox and a bunch of deer). But just in general, more avenues for combat and a mercenary lifestyle would be great to me.

Recently came back to this would-be gem of a game, but it remains unplayable with its random crashes.
Such a pity because mechanic wise it's quite nice.

So no I don't recommend it due to the inevitable crashing.

I'm not real sure how to generally describe Saelig. Others have compared it to the Guild series, but I never played those. I'd say it's a game where you control your character omnisciently and move him around with your mouse to do various economic (mainly), personal, and sometimes dubious tasks of your liking.

The economy is dynamic. Every product produced is used to make something else. Prices change (they drop when a product floods the market or skyrocket when there is none). I haven't seen any other game make an actual economy like this (maybe victoria 2 on a grander scale). And there are outside merchants and caravans who bring in the more exotic goods and sometimes pay better prices for the normal goods.

The main facet of the game though is to own property that produces these products. You can either own a bunch of fields and make wheat, a bunch of bakeries buying wheat and flour off the market, or you can own the entire supply chain to make bread.

Other gameplay possibilites:

- Marry into land ownership

- Arson (lowers property price so can buy land cheap :D)

- Theft

- Assault

- Prosecute, jail, fine (as town reeve (elected) or watchman)

- Trading around

- Probably some more but I havent got to all it yet.

Graphics are pretty good. I'm not a big graphics guy so it don't affect me as much. Buildings and interiors look great! Lots of fine details. NPCs are a little samey so it can be hard to tell the differences between them (there is a few presets with a pool of features, but the pool isn't very big). Not that big of a deal but would be cool to see more unique NPC faces.

Talking and relationships are a little limited but work. Not many dialogue choices.

Would like to see building upgrades provide some visible change. Such as an actual roof and wall for the flour mill when you purchase the roof and wall upgrades.

Few minor bugs here and there but the dev is always willing to address them.

AS FOR THE DEV, never have I met a more engaged developer. He is always open to communication, especially on his discord. He constantly releases updates making the game better each time, even if the updates are small.

He was very helpful to me. I asked for a demo that used to be up, but it was gone. Instead, the dev sent me the full game files to try it out! Great guy.

If you do buy the game, buy it on itch.io so the dev gets more of the money compared to steam. Updates just as easily.

I think I helped make this game a view to others because I like it I shared and told about it to others ;)

You can literally Burn houses and then rebuild them for lower prices and that's an awesome mechanic.

You can buy a lot of buildings different schemes of yours can be set into stone/wood because most is wood buildings.

You can make people afraid of you by just breaking into their buildings keep doing it and they may just leave instead of rebuilding if you are using flint and steel...

you can run a luxurious Farm without owning another house and just use that as your house and that's awesome.

It's an early medieval sandbox life sim with an emphasis on business management and economy. Basically The Guild 2, in old England. You'll pick your map, each with varying numbers/sizes of settlements, choose a background that determines what kind of resources/property you start with, then you just kinda . . . live your life. You can get a job, or start your own business. You can be a baker, a fisher, an herbalist, a gravedigger. You can develop and rent out houses as a landlord. You can start a gang of highwaymen. You can be a hermit, hunting and foraging to survive. Commit murders, commit arson. Get married and have children, who will grow up and have their own children, whom you'll play as further down the line.

You'll watch as settlements grow and change over the years. NPCs can build and own houses and businesses, just like you. They can also commit arson, just like you. Families can grow powerful, rivalries can form. Businesses may thrive or fail. The economy reacts to everything. Different crops will be grown in different seasons, which will affect what kinds of food and drink you can buy at the tavern. If the local fishers have been gathering pearls instead of fishing, there won't be any fish soup. Likewise if you set fire to the dock, because its owner wouldn't sell it to you, but now he can't afford repairs (it is the third time you have done this) and you will buy the smoldering wreckage for a pittance and leave him and his family destitute.

Hire children. Decrease their wages. Fire them when they come of age. Watch them turn to a life of crime.
Murder your rival. Marry his widow. Sleep in his bed.
Become town-reeve. Declare your neighbor an outlaw. Legally seize all of his winter coats.
Become an abbot. Liquidate the church's assets. Build your dream longhouse.

Being an Early Access title since 2017 might give you the wrong impression. It's been a complete game for years, the dev just keeps adding and polishing. It updates all the time. They actually just added viking raids and overhauled combat.

Buying SAELIG so you can experience the life of a medieval innkeeper - $15
Burning down the only other inn in town with its proprietor inside and raising three beautiful sons with his widow - priceless

ive been playing this game for close to 5 years on and off and what a journey it has been. the game 5 years ago looked so different from today but in a good way. During other games that are in EA there are usually updates that Im not a fan of, But saelig every update is appreciated and enjoyable. A few years back I mentioned a issue about sickness with longer day setting, this guy almost instantly replies asking for details to make the system better and not even a day later a hot fix comes. Atorcoppe your awesome man, and your engagement with the community does not go un noticed. sorry if there are grammar errors in here, wife and i had some drinks while having a board game night

And I hope marriage is doing well for you

This game is pretty great. I would like to see it succeed. Light Rpg elements on a management game is a great idea and the elements are blended together here in way that is unique and refreshing. I hope this game gets the attention and support it deserves as I think it could go far. I already dumped thirty hours into it in less than a week while working full time as that's how captivating I found it. It might have some minor rough patches here or there, but there was nothing game breaking by any means.

My play through thus far has been... start with the least possible... a beggar with nothing. Try to break into an herbalist shop as I needed food!. Got away with it once! Go back the following night to try it again....(it was the only promising target located on the edge of town where I might be able to get away. This time, the owner caught me and calls the guard. I, as a beggar, was fined for trying to break into the shop... my life couldn't get any lower.... But, the next day, I spoke to the owner and and begged for a job to pay off my debt so that I could make it up to him - he surprisingly agreed. I spent the next several years learning the trade and becoming friends with the owner. One day, he approached and asked if I wanted to buy his shop. I readily agreed. I spent everything I'd saved for those six years.... and became the town herbalist.

It was hard going at first... No one ever tells you how hard it is to manage a business. Had to figure out how to manage unruly employees who didn't want to show up for work... had to learn how to purchase goods from the local market to best optimize my cash flow. Eventually, though, I had a whole team of people doing my job for me, and it only took a few years.

Then, slowly but surely, I started buying up real estate. First one house...and then another. Well, when I say house, I mean shanty. Actual houses would be much much later. But within about two years, I became my villages first slum lord.

By now, I was wealthy enough that people had forgotten my beggar origins, and I actually attracted a woman who went on to become my wife. (actually I hired her to work in the herbalist shop to get close to her... this strategy failed at least twice before finding success) But, it all paid off in the end because by my early thirties I had the beginnings of a family.

As my family grew, so did my wealth. Eventually, I owned almost every building and business in town. Once you understand how to manage a business, its just a matter of learning a new trade. Then, rinse and repeat. However, I had a few rivals. One hold out refused to sell the leather shop to me to finish my empire. I cursed his name silently almost every night when going to sleep. And another neighbor owned the rights to the lot on the hill where I wanted to build my estate... he also refused to sell. I actually had a brief digression back to my old ways when I tried to rob and sabotage him to get him to leave town. (Arson was my tool of choice) I am ashamed to say I even tried to get close to his wife to get him to start a fight so I could call the guard and have him thrown him in jail. Nothing worked until one day, I did a 180. I just decided to give him a nice house with a view of the lake and the nearby farm land. From then on, we were friends, and he even sold me the property to me at a discount.

Years passed as I collected the materials and finances to build my estate and my legacy for my family. By now my eldest son was grown and courting a woman of his own. He had.... against my advice... taken a job at the leather worker. (that ass still had not sold his business to me) Next thing I know, in my sixtieth year, my son married the daughter of the leather worker! But when her father retired, my son became the owner. At last, my empire would be complete. My estate was finished... and we even started buying up properties in nearby towns... only adding to our wealth.

But not all was perfect. I had always thought my business savvy would earn me a place as a town elder one day and I could complete the final item on my bucket list, but as it turns out that would be another task. As it turns out, years of shrewd business had not entirely endeared me to the my fellow townsfolk. They saw me as cold and calculated and too self-serving. I hosted numerous parties, buttering up all the locals. Enormous parties with dozens of guests. Still nothing. My only saving grace is that my son and two daughters are much more popular than I am.... charisma that they inherited from their mother, apparently. So, I reconcile that even if not everyone likes me... even if some people remember those early B&Es from when I was a teenager... or never forgive me for when I drove out all the other land owners making everyone pay me nearly their entire salaries just to survive... at least my legacy is intact.

Looking forward to seeing what comes with full release and what legacies are possible in the future.

The game itself is very relaxing, I loved the old Guild series, and this reminds me of those, in a good way. :) More professions, bigger map would be welcome, but its great already.

There is one major exploit so far... :) If you accept and resign the watchman position, you get a free sword, which you can sell on the market for 300g. :D

This game brings all the elements of living during the Dark Ages and blends together a lot of different game mechanics, this game is a simulator but also an open world sandbox with in-depth economy system and business management.

This game is an indy game well done, it delivers what it promisses and has a lot of potential. It receives regular updates and the developer is very active and shares a lot with his community. You can get closer to the project using discord too.

100 % nice game. If you are into Guild Franchise or into Fugger (for the elders xD) then this is a solid and nice game.
I can not say anything about the late game but for that price, it is absolutley well done in my opinion. No bugs and nice menu, can be tricky sometimes but you will figure it out. It is good.
Graphics and everything is also solid.

There is also plenty of room for further expansion in my view when it comes to positions of power, that you can apply for. Speaking of Fugger 2, it would be nice, having 2 or 3 levels of positions of power. Town Level, from Reeve to Elder, Countrylevel and kingdom or something like that.

So grab the game, nothing wrong there.

Middle age is harsh time to live and you gotta to what needs to be done. My story started when i where young men , poor as f..k . Sleeping with other stranger in one small hut. Then my life started to change. I robbed mines and sold anything i got, on my free time i catched some fish and have some time to think about my chances in this city, how to get rich or die triyin . I collected some money from my night robberies and bought some first plot of land and build there little workshop. From local orphan house i got good work horses, yeah they where kids but who cares , its middle age, we dont have human rights here. Then i robbed more mines and with stolen goods i made swords in my workshop and sold for nice profit. on a route to marketplace i met love of my life. But next day she where already married so two days later i met another love of my life , everything went nicely until i discovered that shes gold digger. She didnt marry me before i have more money than she already have. I worked hard, i mean i robbed more mines. a lot of mines. Until she accepted my proposal and now we shared everything we have. i got many houses and a lot of cash . But then little devil told me there are many rich women who wants nice guy like me, so i headshot my wife with bow on a nice walk on the river side. And next day i met again a love of my life. Next day we married and day after that she got another headshot. Now im very wealthy man , i own the city and still everybody wants to marrie me . Lucky me :) Thats my story in Saelig and yes it have some bugs and some gameplay mechanics are very repeative but i think im not done yet and ill go and try to find a love of my life, again...

Good game, but Guild 2 is still better and nicer by my opinion.
Few more years and maybe this game will surpass even Guild 2.

Setting game on Long days is not well done. Characters needs to sleep like 2-3 times per a day and eat 2-3 times per day. As player you can manage with these settings, but AI can't. All AI controlled characters will get constantly tired and hungry. When they are hungry and tired, they will get sick really fast. When everyone is sick, no one is making goods or very little. Soon there will shortage on the market.

Love this game.

If you ever enjoyed The Guild series it's very close to that but better.

Start a single person. Get a job. Buy a business. Rent out a home. Die. Leave it to your heir.

There's a thief system I believe but I've never tried it.

It has a long list of careers.

Farms, bakehouses, butcher shops, leatherwork, mines, herbal houses, ale houses and more!

I'm sure I named some of them wrong but regardless, this game is great, especially for the price.

It's a perfect business/economy simulator that I hope you check out. The game is a lot of fun.

In Saelig you can head a merchant family and run for positions within the towns you become a moving piece of. Upgrade from a mine/lumberyard/farm to having workshops and bakehouses to produce manufactured goods and interact with the dynamic markets and travelling merchant. Building a longhouse and feasting makes obtaining Roles of Power within the communities much faster than the frequent smaller interactions you make. During the day you supervise and work at your buildings or someone elses until you save up. At night you mingle, entertain, and manage your resources between buildings to trade before prices drop. I had plenty of fun building up Torr who got most of my achievements and I can see myself starting over again soon. Highly recommended for any Anglo-Saxon or Norse homesteader looking to settle 880s England.

Developer actively updates and improves game. New features added constantly. This game has been so fun to play, and every update it is even more fun. Would highly recommend the game. Its a life sim, economy sim, business sim all in one. closest game i can relate it to is the guild, but imo this is better, and more laid back.

- I started chatting with some guy and he started yelling at me for no reason.

- My worker died of the plague so I hired child labor as replacement.

- Someone set fire to my business while I was asleep inside.

- A game about making money where you loose if you don't find love, as you'll die heirless.

- Nothing feels more like success than upgrading your cart to a horse cart, so you can ride on the back, like a boss.

- My horse is perfectly able to buy and sell on the market by itself.

- Work, thrive, trade and toil in Dark Ages Britain, until vikings plunder your village and dump your body on a ditch.

- Highly recommended if you're studying IX Century history, or if you're playing TW Thrones of Britania.

I'm having a ton of fun with this one. Amazing labor of love by a single dev. Thanks for supporting my OS of choice, Linux.

(Having said that, it's an Early Access game, some mechanics need polishing or are yet to be implemented, like the viking raids, some of the 2D icons look like placeholders, 12 hours into the game I hit some bugs, but nothing game breaking... so far)

If you played The Guild 2: Renaissance, then this is a true successor to this game, unlike TG3 that strayed away too far into a global strategy, totally missing out on that small scale experience, role play and character development.

If you haven't, then SAELIG is an economical sim/life sim/RPG set during Early Medieval. Get into trade, see your character at work, get married, create caravans, get rich, become powerful and own the town effectively and possibly literally.

While it's a bit glitchy, some features are not polished or not there and the graphics could be better, especially in case of the characters, it's honestly amazing one man could accomplish all that.

Overall it's a pretty solid and sturdy Early Access right now, so can recommend.

You can clearly see The Guild vibes in this game. It scratches just the right spot for The Guild fans and it's way more sandboxy than it IMO, I started as a beggar and started burning down houses until I got caught and threw in the pit.

If the dev keeps updating the game, this is going to be great. And also, yes, enable workshop, there's gonna be so many people contributing to making this so much better.

I TOOK A LONG TIME to review this game. To me the price is TOO LOW LOL I cant believe i said that but it is. I bought the guild 3 played it about 40 hours have not touched it since even with the updates guild 3 lost its immersion and turned into a side of the building grind. Immersion and feeling of the game is important to me or I get sleepy. I've only found about 3 quality of life issues that are subjective: 1 the color of the world tend to be a little dismal even after playing with the settings 2.the amount population is random you could get a game with a large amount of old people and woo the quality of employees are limited 3. fight with driving the cart around it take a lot of getting use to, you have to constantly check to ensure your moving the cart instead of the npc. These are the only things that I have found NOT BAD for I believe its one guy. I think i got it for 12.00 when it could easily sell for 30.00 and be worth it. The developer is still engaged... All i can say is congrats on a solid game. I found the game to be entertaining and engaging in the genre!

Something not right with hours played it shows 33. ive playes for 68 hours so...

Good, rather actively uptaded - for single man developer - and creative game. Despite its Anglosaxon theme, it brings all good memories of The Guild 2 for me, with relatively improved graphics.
The game is rather inexpensive to buy and well worth its price tag.
The author has a roadmap for this game and uptades arrive at relatively regular intervals of time.

saelig has the potential to become the true guild 3. why? it has interiors.

current state of early access includes
-INTERIORS (!!!)
-many jobs to work at
-multiple BIG maps
-a good amount of wares to trade
-a great amount of skills to improve
-the first politics to take part in
-character-to-character interactions

but what is missing / what needs to be done?
-GUI needs more polishing
-animations deserve a workover, they are a bit stiff at times
-needs more politcs (first steps are already done)
-smarter production and trade AI of other dynasties
-more active dynasties, havent been attacked or insulted once

don't get me wrong: it's already a good and playable early access that is actively being developed on. definetly looking forward to full release. i bet it will come earlier than guild 3.

I love the concept but it just stumbles and falls on the execution repeatedly. It has one of the most unintuitive user interfaces I've ever experienced. The mechanics don't mesh together well, every action feels awkward, every movement of the camera or instruction to a character is a chore. Its a clunky beast that doesn't have enough charm to convince you it's still worth its time. The games time and location setting could be so interesting and fresh but its obfuscated by this veil of difficulty and and bad design that constantly rips you away from any shred of immersion. I know this game is early access and I've waited a long time to try it but I honestly can't see how they can fix the problems it has without burning the whole thing down and starting again.

Definitely recommend this game for anyone who enjoys management-style sims, but also just wants to relax. The atmosphere is pleasant and there are so many little quirks in the way NPC's behave. The most enjoyable part for me is probably just people watching from first person mode haha.
There are some bugs, but the developer is incredibly responsive and dedicated. The last few updates since I started playing have pretty much obliterated any crash issues I had when I started, and the dev fixed an issue I was having with a save file almost immediately after I emailed him.
Most of the game-breaking bugs are fixed quickly, and the ones that aren't are too small to really make a difference. Eg; random upgrades to properties that I didn't pay for, a house deciding on its own it did not want tenants anymore, etc. That being said, for an early access game developed by just one person, it is better than a lot of similar games I have played, and certainly worth the price.

I originally loved this game when I bought it a few years ago. The ability to make your own fortune however you wanted via trading, crafting, burning down your neighbors business, farming, peeking into tree stumps, etc. It was fun, some times a little frustrating with a bug here or there, but fun none the less.

Now whenever I attempt to play, it's frustrating and practically unplayable. Even with the newest updates and playing on the lowest settings, the game constantly crashes and sometimes won't even start. I'll attempt playing again next year, but at this moment I cannot recommend the game.

I really love this game, it's got something really special about it.

The blend of RPG into a historical simulation is just lovely. I got bored with those Banished / Dawn of Man / etc type games because there isn't that emotional connection to a character and while I love strategy for its own sake, it becomes monotonous quite quickly. There is usually only one route to success in those games and it's just cold hard maths.

This is different. You can play how you want to, you can change your direction on a whim and the AI is constantly mixing things up. I'm quite deep into my character's game now and still learning new things every moment.

It's hilariously irreverent and icily sinister. The storytelling reminds me of Rimworld, just the right amount of absurd. Then a child dies of the plague and it's actually really sad and touching. You don't usually expect pathos from a sim/strategy game yet here it is.

Also - the crashes have been fixed! If you look on the discussions tab you'll see how active the developer is. Don't be put off by older reviews.

I'm 4hrs into SAELIG and I've enjoyed all 4 of them so far.

While 4hrs isn't much time to review a game, and most of my time has been spent in the tutorial, and trying to fix a bug that freezes my whole PC on occasions, I feel the game will hold my attention for many hours to come.
This minor bug/issue wont stop me, as the developer is working a solution as we speak, and these are the type of games I really love to sink time into.
Looking forward to my journey into SAELIG

I had some fun with this game. It's interesting especially during the early stages.
But the UI has quite a few quirks, and sometimes buggy in places. As you buy up more businesses, these minor issues become magnified and start to become a major annoyance to the point it affects gameplay

This game has lots of promise if it continues to be developed.
It's not looking good though, the EA release date was 2017, the Discord and steam boards are a ghost town, and development updates seems to be gradually petering out.

Feels like it will be abandoned before it's ever reaches it's potential

Excellent game with some good thoughts and ideas behind it. While still in EA its a well polished gem and I havent come across any bugs or glitches yet.

The game is still quite light on things to do however, and it does need some fleshing out to keep players entertained for longer periods of time.

I got this game a very long time back and only played it for a little over 2 hours. It just made me miss The Guild 2 so I went back to playing that and made the awful mistake of purchasing the Guild 3.

I regret buying The Guild 3 and fans familiar with the series probably know why. If I had just waited it out, I would have been met with Saelig as it is today - a better successor to the series and arguably almost as good as the Guild 2 but $15 to a one-man team that has been working on this for *years* and remains steadfast and involved in the community. I have spoken to the dev myself and raised an issue/question about a bug I was experiencing. He fixed it within hours and said the bugfix will be applied in the next update. I'm not saying he can do this every time but it just shows you that, yeah the game has been in early access a long time, but he's still active and involved and he really cares.

The game is still a work in progress but I got addicted to it pretty easily. I like the different starts and began as a beggar with no more than 12 gold on me and went on to build a family empire. Friendships and enemies actually matter - you can convince friends to work for you or if they're one of the town elders to put in a vote for you to take office (offices are still a WIP as of this review there's only one position but another will release with the next update). Enemies will want to cause you harm and may try to burn down one of your buildings while you're away and you can do the same to them. It feels like you are watching your kids grow up. Though your spouse and kids are not controllable, they feel less like wooden NPCs and more alive relative to the budget of this game. Every NPC in town, your family included, has a routine and needs that they tend to. You can't just use them as slave labor, they wander about and while you may employ them, you are encouraged to keep them comfortable.

The game has a economy system based on selling goods from businesses much like the Guild series. It's also very profitable to make money doing things such as entertaining in the streets.

Currently there is no building but it surprisingly doesn't feel like it needs it because businesses compete due to the economy system of supply and demand and building is planned to be implemented anyway.

The learning curve is not very hard. The controls are pretty decent and the key bindings can be changed.

Overall, I definitely got my money's worth. I recommend you give it a try if you enjoy life simulation games or are a fan of the Guild series.

The updates are consistent, the play is fluid and it offers a Sim-esqe stile of gaming that I really enjoy. Overall a very enjoyable game, the mechanics can use a bit of tweaking but as I said the updates are consistent so they come with pretty much every update and none of the very minor bugs I have come across have impeded play or enjoyment. Wonderful game!

At this point, no I would not recommend, even by Early Access standards. I like the idea of The Guild but Dark Ages, at this point it's too unfinished to even be early access. after a couple hours played, 30 to 40 minutes in 3 different games, fisherman, mine owner, and criminal. 2 of 3 games ended pretty quickly in a game ending bug that couldn't be worked around (crashing when using the cart in any manner.) Not only that but the game seems to still overlay my screen while crashing so I couldn't even kill the task and it required a manual reboot.

That said, I plan to check back because there is promise. However I'm still down voting (for now) because Early Access should be for playable titles that have more content/mechanics to work out, not titles with massive critical flaws.

I am really fond of this game, also nice steady updates, completely playable even if its early access (I mean I sometimes have crashes, but also the game automatically saves every midnight so not a big deal).

Positive:
- I like the graphics (well the people all look the same, but that is still work in progress)
- hooks you for hours
-you can play very differently, however you like, as one person or generations, depends on how fast you let the time pass
- you can be an outlaw or ministrel, making lots of money that way, or become a crafter yourself, or try to own lots of businesses, you can focus on trading, you can become guard captain (and a really corrupt one as that), a village elder, a grandma with hundreds of kids (you can also adopt), a marriage swindler..
- so much nice details
(minor edit, fogot:)- dev is very reachable, open to feedback, constantly making the game better and helpful in the steam discussions!!

negative:
- the automation doesnt work smooth tbh yet, to be effective you need to constantly micromanage the stuff that gets a bit repetitive with lots of lots of clicks, it would be very nice to let this all go smoother
- as much as there is, I miss a bit depth in some aspects on the political side of things until now, there should be more global influences and options for political patheways

suggestions:
- well it would be nice to be able to change the time scales you chose in the beginning of the game during the game
- I would like some infidelity, I chose some old rich husband, but now he can't give me kids anymore, I mean I already killed my first one punching him, but well, can't kill them all (and yeah I know I can adopt)
- make automation go smoother, especially the delivering resources to your own businesses is really a hassle, maybe you could add an option where the resource intense businesses like the alehouse and bakery, which dont really need to use their cart to sell things to also pick up ingredients,
-or give the big farm an extra cart upgrade, and the possibility to let the farm get an extra animal pen and an extra field, I really dont like managing the big farm
- the automation really needs an option how fast they need to sell or bring stuff to other businessses.. I mean they
- the automation of focus objects doenst seem to work how it is intended, would be also nice to not lose the chosen settings when you turn automation off
- more political pathways and more general goals to make this game even richer, let your actions have more influence
- when you have multiple businesses you want to sends resources to its always a guess which one it is when you send a cart from the cart menu to automatically load off there

So this game does have it share of bugs, but honestly, I'm not that bothered. The game is very engaging and easy to navigate. It's a cinch to understand the mechanics unlike other similar titles and is quite fun. The best thing is the dev is very active and helpful when bugs do show up, and I can see this game becoming very popular and exceptional. I'm keeping my eye on Stardog from now on, I think you should too.

One of the best games I've played lately. I was always crazy about life simulator, economy, trading, tycoon type of games, and the games set in the medieval ages...and Saelig has it all. The best part for me is being able to start off as a beggar. Seeing your character going from nobody to owning half a map is just so satisfying, I have to admit. :)

I had bought it when it was first released and I just couldn't get into it... mainly because my computer at the time struggled to run it. So I just ended up putting it aside for a couple years and forgot about it. I have a good rig now and am able to play it. And after a mere 11 hours I found myself unable to put it down, I'm just enjoying the gameplay loop. I am enjoying just running a business chain, slowly climbing the social ladder. Now I know most people probably won't like it, I had to restart a couple of times trying to see what works and what doesn't (I don't like playing tutorials). It's slow paced, there's a lot of micromanagement, and and I think there's only one developer so updates are few and far between (but he's incredibly active with the community). As of bugs I haven't encountered any major ones yet, but the UI could do with a lot of tweaking. Sometimes I'm staring at a money transaction from two hours ago and it just won't go away until I quit the game and reload it. That's probably the worst one I've encountered so far. There is a bit of customizing your gameplay experience: you can choose how long the day is, how many days are in the season, and how many years pass after you cycle through the seasons. It's small and most people may not care too much about it but I do like it. I can recommend it to anyone who has played the Guild games (Never played them myself but from what I can tell those are most of the active players) or if you are like me and are interested in quirky games like these. I've seen the list of upcoming features and I'm excited.

This might not be everyone's cup of tea but I enjoy building empires in games and simulations so it was just fine for me. You basically chose your character appearance, then which hamlet he will live in on the south side of the British Isles. It is set in 800s AD. It is totally a sandbox style, but many people end up looking into the business aspect of it.

You can start with a maximum of 14,000 gold pieces and can right away start buying buildings or businesses. Or you can start as a Beggar with no home and 12 gold pieces. Being a beggar is basically hard mode. I have tried both, they are both fun in their own way.

The types of businesses you have available: Thieving, Mining, Metalworking, Wood Cutting, Miller, Tavern Owner/Brewer, Trader, and a number of others. You have resource management, and do whatever you want with it. I started my beggar as a thief and stole my way into building an empire with a monopoly on mining and metalworking. Very cool. The only draw back is you need to remember to save throughout the game day, or else sometimes it crashes and you lose your progress.
