AMK, NLC, OGSE, Wlads AMK Soljanka, Oblivion Lost, Lost Alpha, ABC Inferno...

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

I will look for a patch to fix this, but I'm really pissed off that I spend money on all S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, that I wanted to play since my youth, and now I'm getting this crap that I could code better given me an API.

Tschernobyl ruft…
Zitat:
Was stehst du noch hier rum? Raus mit dir, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.!
-Ein klassischer Spruch der Spielreihe
-Ein klassischer Spruch der Spielreihe
Gameplay
Darunter fallen der inoffizielle Nachfolger Survarium, Will to Live Online, „Escape from Tarkov“ und viele weitere Titel.
Grafik/Sound
„S.T.A.L.K.E.R.“ ist mittelmäßig gut gealtert.
Fazit

Story: Main storyline will take 10 hours to get through, but there are also plenty of optional side quests (mostly cash rewards) that can consume hours, as well as sheer hours spent on exploration in atmospheric, immersive world.
Gameplay: The game slides between post-apocalyptic science fiction thriller, nerve-singing survival horror shooter with very realistic weapons and exploration of abandoned territories as well as complicated human behavior keeping you constantly in a state of hesitant wonder.
Graphics: The graphics, though dated in places, builds a sense of enchanting mystique of realistic post-apocalyptic surroundings. Very realistic sunrises, rainstorms, and NPC battles occurring outside the sphere of player involvement produce a disarming atmospheric cohesiveness. Attention to detail in all the game's cityscapes and fields triggers a subtle sense of familiarity.
Sound/Music/Voice: Sounds are quite good, particularly the startling cries of the various mutants and the piercing ambient howls that float across The Zone from time to time. Weapon sounds do a great job of immersing you in the environment, effectively conveying a sense of the firearms' power. You'll find unexpected extras packed in as well, most notably a surprising amount of guitar songs and jokes that you can hear when you sit with other NPC stalkers in front of a flaming barrel.
Optimization: Good (old game), runs well on low-end PC.
Bugs: Some bugs, crashed a few times.
Singleplayer: Yes (solo only).
Multiplayer: Not worth it (very unpopular).
Player Count: Low.
Pay to Win: No (no DLC, no lootboxes, no microtransactions).
Comment: Played with mod - STALKER Complete 2009.

The setting and atmosphere is definitely the strongest thing this game has. You explore the outskirts of Pripyat and the notorious Chernobyl NPP after a strange second disaster happens and alters the world and defies both science and reality itself with Anomalies and artifacts. The world is fairly decent sized and split into sectors. You'll explore most of them multiple times. The underground labs are probably some of the most horrifying experiences I've had in a long time with the sound design and darkness.
The gameplay is probably the weakest part of the whole experience. Guns have a tendency to be inconsistent but scoped weapons reign supreme due to how long range engagements can me along with seeing where your bullet went. Bodyshots are easily shrugged off by even lowly bandits so headshots are essentially a must to win. Mutants on the other hand are either weak or bullet sponges. The player character no matter what difficulty is weak. You might have to resort to abundant use of quicksaves and some save scumming since the game is fairly difficult in some sections.
The economy in this game is fairly brutal meaning you'll have to do some jobs and grinding by taking artifacts, loot, and risking your own life to make small amounts of cash only to save up and blow it all on buying that expensive ass new suit with exoskeleton support that looks awesome. Different traders offer different prices for specific items, such as the ecologist paying top dollar for any artifacts or mutant pieces you bring them. However everything has durability meaning when you purchase anything be ready to chuck it away or sell the broken gear for a mere fraction of what you payed for before. The game is also not very friendly to loot hoarders with bullets and all other things that go into your inventory taking up weight. The game punishes you for stocking up on too much gear (such as having like 1000 extra AK rounds) you do not need basically forcing you to take the bare essentials.
Now let me get into the artifacts. These are a staple of the game's experience and what really makes this game from shiny silver to absolute gold. Artifacts are found in stashes you find locations for or inside an anomaly which will instantly eviscerate your character. These things are high risk high reward and you can easily find them with the naked eye. Not all artifacts are good or sell for much. A number of them are pretty much junk artifacts that irradiate your character or offer very little benefit however when you find something like maybe 4 moonlight artifacts you can pretty much sprint infinitely even when you're carrying too much. Some items can effect different aspects of the gameplay such as stopping bleeding, increased resistances, increased health, and radiation removal. A lot of these do come with downsides such as emitting radiation, making you weaker to specific attacks, and overall increasing the bleed out rate.
The story in this game is basically next to non-existent. Like it's there but at the same time it's really nothing special. I know I said the gameplay is the weakest part but I think I take that back now. There are 2 main endings with the one having sub endings based on what you did and yes there is a true canon ending if you go out of your way to figure it out.
NO FAST TRAVEL. Expect to do some walking and rationing your gear alongside avoiding fights from point A to point B if you have to.
I'd say S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl is a must play game. It might not be for everyone but it is definitely one of the best for what it is. Also if I find someone who calls this game series Russian Fallout I will borderline hurt them.

Rather than play the game on normal I immediately set it on the hardest possible difficulty, and didn't stop to wonder why a dog took up two clips of my pistol. Rather than learn from that, I came upon a group of stalkers about to charge into a bandit camp and said to them I will do it solo, after all I realised that the knife in this game was op... That was a mistake.
Stealth works as much as it does irl if they can see you or use there super hearing you bet your damn life you will die because playing Johnny Rambo armed with only a knife doesn't do well in a gun fight especially when a gun pointed directly at you acts as a shield preventing you to get close enough for it to even connect to their hit box. Reloading I begged the other Stalkers for help and then looted all of their bodies as both stalkers and bandits wiped each other out.
As I learned more about the games aiming mechanics that the closer you are to mother earth the more she blesses you with accuracy rather than admiring your gun by looking down the sight, I decided to attack a group of screaming bandits. Why were they screaming? I didn't know but all I was thinking was free money. Coming up on the bandits one charged me and was swept up by a vortex, then I realised what the screams were. Laughing at this stupid bandit I was quickly beset by the rest of his gangs and decided to run. Behind me there was a vortex. I died.
After this I tried making friends. Other stalkers will like you more if you help them especially when you give them first aid kits as the writhe in agony on the floor. I did this to veterans and you have a stalker killer machine as your friend, then I watched as almost instantly a large ravenous horde of hungry dogs arrives and kill said new friend.
Get the hell under ground to get away from said dogs, realise the horror of your decision while you nearly crap you pants as a screaming deformed mutant pops out of no where and has only tentacles for a face, try to assure yourself its okay. Call yourself a liar as another decides to use you as a rag-doll with its psychic powers.
Shaken, pop up and realise you are under a military base. Feel good that you've come a long way from getting wiped out by bandits as you wipe out the soldiers and 'acquire' their hardware.
Leave to a new area and get swarmed by a massive group of dogs and die before relaxing at the bar.
And all of this happened in a span of 5 hours.

This is my review but over all as someone who just beaten it and someone who loves wasteland type settings and more. This is hands down a most for anyone who loves single player games and who wants something more from Metro(I beaten all of the games and now I'm reading the book slowly).
This game is much more harder then any game you will most likely play if you play on the hardest(as you should). Why the hardest you may ask? Well to save you from wasting bullets! The harder the game is the easier it is to kill things. But the same goes for you as well.
The story is pretty damn solid and then ending(s?) are worth it too.
There are side missions and quests you can do while you get to the point of following the main quest which can be a bit of a drag if I can be honest here. But for anyone who is thinking about buying this game. I would and I would do it again and again! Even when my first saved got wiped because I had to switch out my dying hard drive with a newer one. It sucked but it was worth it to play it all the way and experience the game fully for what it is.
Now, GET OUT OF HERE STALKER!

I think it is. It's different but just as good if not better in many aspects.
The best part is that it's original and have its own unique vibe to it. Similar to Metro games but still more unique in a good way.
Beautiful (or not so much) world to explore and get to know.
Definitely recommend playing on MASTER difficulty. It's one of those games that is not that really hard but very gratifying.
MASTER + disable crosshair in options = pure joy to play/
I still haven't found even one thing I do not like about it...
It just all makes sense and fit perfectly all together/
Buy and play the hell out of it.

made by a very poor non supported developer in 2007 and today is stile strong enough to compare with modern games
the fact is non of the FPS games are able to compare with this amazing masterpiece
gun play and sound of guns and are well created and there are lots of guns for use
soldiers in game are well armed and even throw grenades and have very good iq for 2007
the entire map is big enough to take good adventure and fight with mutant animals and enemies and discover the secrets of zone
how many game survived since 2007 ?
how many games become true legends like stalker ?
im telling this to who ever never play stalker games : if you do not play this game you will fell regret

Retro Review
I remember playing Clear Sky and Shadow of Chernobyl when I was a pretty young teenager, the games setting was certainly to my liking so I played trough them. Now I wanted to replay the series as Stalker 2 is coming up and started with this one first.
Gameplay
Despite having lots of items and loot to find the game appears to be a non-liniar open world shooter but this is actually far away from the actual gameplay. You start out in the beginning in a map you can explore freely but overall there isnt much to do actually besides the main quest. So the gameplay loop usually consists from talking to people, going somewhere doing 1-2 quests and then moving on to the next area until you at the end reach the center.
Items you find can be picked up but mostly your carry weight is so low that its more about finding artifacts and selling them or finding items that you can ditch your old equipment for. There are side objectives but those don’t really matter as their rewards are so low its better to just find a place where you fought before, run there almost naked and grab all the items and go back to the nearest shopkeeper to sell it for.
Not that you need tough, in the lategame I never grinded money specifically and could buy the endgame weapons I liked and enough ammo to feel comfortable with. There are a ton of weapons to choose from but honestly the ones that feature the more common ammo types are just the best as you don’t have any risk of finding no ammo.
The gunplay is quite fun due to its more tactical approach. You die very quickly and enemies depending on armor soak way much more damage than you. Their biggest weakness is ranged combat . If you are far away they have lots of problems hitting you, or when you are close to objext and lean around corners. AI wise its also neat how they run away trying to reload and sometimes first try to find cover when engaging in a firefight.
Additonally to spice things up it has also a couple horror like sequences where you fight in underground bunker or laboratories. Mutants are still not the main part of the game as most combat encounter are humans which are also the more difficult ones.
The game also seems to have lots of content scrapped or having various ideas not fleshed out. As an example you have a ranking and various factions but you cant really join or learn much more about them.
The main quest is kept me engaged enough but the side quests didn’t so I never did them again after the first few. They are repetetive mmo type quests that can be done over and over again. Same with finding secret loot stashes. Its mostly not worth the time investing.
Also there is a multiplayer pvp mode that is played to this day. Its not great or anything, actually the opposite but it shows how dedicated the community is.
Story
This is actually where it gets interesting. Now the whole story itself is quite unique but the scenario it is placed in even more. On top of that it is apparently somewhat based on a book but not entirely. Not only features it a quite confusing (but short) story about a man with amnesia but also you learn more about the world you found yourself in and both can be equally confusing and fun to find out more information about.
I only disliked that the canon ending is quite hidden and something most people will not find out on their own.
Aesthetics
Im quite fascinated how a game from 2007 can still look this good today. The outdoor environment is something that still trumps a lot of modern games. The good soundtrack coupled with sound effects make a perfect atmosphere.
You do not only have background music that can change from menacing to melancholic but also comfortable feeling guitar tracks from the people playing in their various camps. People group up at times when not currently working, playing guitars and telling stories. Those are in russian only tough. Best way to play would be to completely put the game into russian and use english text instead as your main character is never assumed to be english speaking making it weird having this half translation.
The only drawback are the weird animations and models of human beings which can actually easily be improved with lots of free and easy to install mods. Im especially fond of the many terrain textures, hd models and new reloading animations.
Conclusion/TL;DR
Shadow of Chernobyl is an old game that has a lot of jank. So much infact that it became a cult classic with lots of memes for good reason. But ontop of that you also have an fps with interestening ideas and aspects to its gameplay and atmosphere. Dont expect a very good open world game but rather a very neat shooter with big maps , a good story and lots of cheeki breeki.

Stalker is essentially Russian Fallout. It actually does several things that Fallout 3 didnt - like it doesnt load when you into a building. Granted, those buildings are not nearly as fleshed out as a Fallout game, but hey. The map also sorta works like a puzzle, where when you enter a new piece of that puzzle, it loads that level/area.
Now to the game. In the game you play a STALKER in the Zone, which basically means you are a guy who hunts for anomolies/empowered objects in a post apocalytic area of Russia that is home to radiation, anomolies, and mutants. And if you hadnt assumed, all those things try to kill you.
The game has a solid main story and encourages exploration and experimentation. I would say in 2021, you would be better off playing modded versions of this/all three games. But this game was a lot of fun when i played it. Imperfect in a smaller budget sense and older by today's standards, but it is a fun game.

Now I did have one big problem, one massive problem, and that was my fault.
I didn't relax as much as I should've, I was under prepared and going through the story a bit too fast in my opinion which is why I gave up playing on the first time, in a lot of moments I would be stressed.
Don't do what I did, take it slower, do sidequests, enjoy the scenery and atmosphere, go artifact hunting, go mutant hunting, roleplay or something, but that is just my personal opinion, I feel it would've made the game a lot more soothing, but I enjoyed it a lot anyways. Although I recommend switching off crosshair and going master mode.
By the way, one of the biggest things was how dynamic the world felt, when you cleared a area of fixed spawned enemies, sometimes new people would adventure through. For example clearing cordon on your way to the garbage would eventually lead to more loners to go through there because it's safer and they will talk to each other, drink with each other, or listen to a song, it makes it feel relatively lively. Although sometimes these people will die whether it's from mutants, other factions, or anomalies, and there isn't much you can do because people can die in a area you aren't even in and they're corpses will be there, but so is the unfortunate tale of most in the zone. This can even happen to minor unique characters, pretty much everyone besides Barkeep, Sidorovich, Sakharov, and maybe a few others.
To the great STALKERS who've been lost, to list some: Fox, Wolf, Yurik, Bes, and more, may the zone let you rest, and I shall pour out a vodka for you all.
On a side note: Most guns aren't accurate so that will be a bit frustrating, but I've learnt to deal with it, there's no fast travel, but it's better that way, and the game is semi-linear as there isn't a full open world, but it's still able to be traversed differently.
On another side note: When I got to the Red Forest it kinda lost a bit of enjoyment because it turned into a survival rpg to a full on gunfight, then I got to Pripyat and it was a lot better in my opinion I was excitied, but when I reached the NPP it went back to feeling like that, was still fun but kinda dreadful because it was just a long gunfight. I knew I could've gone back to like Cordon and the Bar, but it did end up feeling like a linear level shooter at that point those areas don't have much free roam and in the spots they do there's probably gonna a beat a ton of enemies.

- beatiful graphics and style of aestetic
- complex AI behaviour
- an intriguing story
- a vast open world, immersive location with you could say maniacal attention to detail
The game is an open world adventure horror fps, and the horror element is something special.
There are some jumpscare but most of the horror element is found in location details, pacing and the fact that the character you play feels very human and not like in other games where you feel like a super hero. You are as vulnerable as the NPCs and if you don't pay attention even a wild dog can tear you to pieces.
The shortcomings of this game are:
- bugs, lots of people complain about them... i found only one major bug (kruglov related) that can be easily avoided like most bugs by not saving during combat or some events
- the difficulty system is strange, long story short you should play from the start on the hardest difficulty to avoid bulletsponge enemies
- the game could become a little frustrating the first time you play until you get used to some of the mechanics of the game about anomalies and damage
- stealth is really hard to pull off
In short this game is not forgiving at all, so save often before you take part in some important quest.
Other than that.... good hunting stalker!

4. SAVE OFTEN.
5. In the first camp, there is a merc armor hidden in one of the loft houses(very good armor).
6. DON`T RUSH this game, play it like a real stalker. Be the loner of the game. It is a dark horror masterpiece so take your time, you won`t regret it. Good luck !

it's certainly not some high budget FPS or AAA horror game, but it gets the job done

You could write multiple papers about this game, there are some good long form youtube videos covering the game and series.
if you are begging for a negative point. one of my later saves I cleared a spot out and saved, upon loading that save one of the corpses came back to life, it may have been possible I only wounded him before saving but i'm nearly certain he was dead, anyways this dude is just facing me upon loading, luckily he has to notice me and draw his weapon or else I would have had to go back to an older save, it still was a bitch because I waited 98% of the game to try a shotgun and the bullets not hitting or accuracy issue people often described was really felt here. shotgun ready to go, hipfire is the phattest crosshair spread you can imagine, sight up a shotgun with your eye over the barrel also not an amazing way to shoot, so killing this wannabe zombie man was a total crapshoot and really just a minor inconvenience I could have solved a lot quicker, was just stubborn and used that save more than I should have funneling 50 guys into the same doorway and then messing up somehow

It hasn't aged well, with its creaky X-Ray Engine and often relatively small series of world maps (linked with loading screens) but it is a hell of game to play still, and is well supported (and even extended) by a vibrant modding community. If I could travel back in time to play this for the first time again, I would do so in a heartbeat, and not just to escape the Trump era. Shadow of Chernobyl is exciting, scary, and brilliant from start to finish.
I played it with Autumn Aurora mod which did little more than upgrade the graphics, because GSC did everything else so well. A thrilling campaign set in diverse environments from the famously radioactive Red Forest, to the bowels of the doomed Reactor No. 4. Hard as nails gun play, with excellent mechanics for its time, intelligent, deadly NPCs that will attempt to flank you (and cause you to reload many a save), deadly mutants and dangerous anomalies-- all staples of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series-- everything in Shadow of Chernobyl feels just right for an excursion into the most dangerous zone in the world.
Having visited the Zone of Exclusion in Ukraine in 2017, I can attest to the fidelity of GSC's world building with details that match real world environments. It is little wonder that a true sequel is one of the most wished for games, right up there with Half Life 3 and games like System Shock. There is no hand holding at all. You wake up in the Zone after an accident and it is up to you to figure out who you are, why you're there and what your mission even is. Shadow of Chernobyl is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. If you haven't played it you are fortunate...
... because your first insertion begins. Now.

Technical aspects aside, I loved the story, the twists, the fight or flight gameplay. I don't remember If Clear Sky was longer because I did more side quests or just in general but this game felt a bit shorter. However that also was prolly cause I played MOSTLY the story, with a side quest or two in between. However even then if you loot corpses and sell most of the stuff you'll be RICH in no time so what's the purpose of doing side quests other then just for fun. However even with this aside I felt like I sorta missed out on some content because I didn't look for it, like the arena fights I apparently didn't even notice til someone told me. Artifacts are also everywhere, giving you boosts and negative effects depending. A lot of the negatives though feel to me like cherry picking, because overall I REALLY enjoyed the blast from the past. I also don't think that Clear Sky was the worst of the series either now that I've fully played this for the first time in years and having not listened to others. I'd say give both of these a try just know that this game needs A LOT of patch work and if you look at the history of the game you'd know why.
Pros:
Story is tight
Difficult (Depending on the person)
Excellent Atmosphere like none other
Gunplay actually feels good besides some of the technical stuff
Cons:
Difficult (Depending on the person)
Bullets go right through people sometimes
The final stretch can be a huge pain in the a ss

Played with the “Starter Pack Mod” installed
Released in 2007, the first game in the Stalker series is well known for the influence it has had on a large number of other franchises across many genres. But when going back to the game, is this praise deserved or has age clouded these gems once shiny surface? Well, that answer is complicated, for me at least.
Lets start on a positive note, pretty much every aspect bar two (don’t worry we’ll get to it) is perfect. The atmosphere is really second to none and can switch effortlessly from intense action to paralysing horror. This is what kept me coming back to this game and being genuinely excited to come back to The Zone and try to survive the mutants, anomalies and hostile bandits.
The story does a good job at driving the experience, even if it did make me stare at the screen with a blank impression and failed to get me invested in it. If this interests you then you can safely purchase this and experience one of the greats in this niche genre of immersive survival shooter.
Sadly the aspects I mentioned above, as well as my overall opinion of this game, are spoiled by a little & a large issue. The little issue is the factions, there seems to be almost no reason to get involved with them - they help you as long as you are neutral with them and don’t seem to mind you doing jobs or interacting with the rival factions.
The BIG issue however, is the shooting, oh boy is the shooting bad. Recoil? Seems entirely random. Hit registering? Sometimes you nail a headshot on the first shot, other times you seem to empty a clip of 30 rounds into an enemy’s face and they just tank it like a boss. The guns sound great and have really nice animations, but they all feel like foam dart shotguns.
In conclusion, the game does not hold up on a mechanical level to modern shooters in this style, with a story that does little to keep you invested. But, there is a lot here to love in terms of presentation and world design. I’d recommend STALKER SoC to anyone who is a fan of survival horror, immersive sims or both to give it a try.
Rating: Proverbial Carrot (Fans of the genre)

As for the gameplay, this game is hard. That needs to be stressed. And you should play it on the hardest difficulty. On lower difficulties there are certain parts of the game that don't scale well (there are plenty of guides online which explain how this works if you're interested). What this means in practice is that the early game is very challenging. If you give up on this game because of the difficulty, it will probably be before you reach Rostok / Yantar. And that's a shame, because once you get into that part of the game, things get easier. Bear in mind, you will probably be doing a lot of saving and reloading in the early game. If this isn't something you can enjoy, you might struggle to get into S.T.A.L.K.E.R..
The unfolding story of the game is closely related to the story of the novel Roadside Picnic and the Tarkovsky movie Stalker from 1979. In fact, the game could be described as a loose adaptation of either, although I stress the word loose. I'm not going to include any spoilers in this review, but suffice to say, the game's plot begins with a straightforward goal, but soon expands to handle the same questions and themes of the novel and film. For people who are interested in story-telling in video games (particularly when it doesn't come through straight-forward talk-to-camera exposition), there is a lot for you here. The game doesn't always yield the details of its narrative readily, but the game was clearly a labour of love, and the designers obviously took a great interest in their source material.
As for the light RPG elements, this is a game in which you manage your inventory, your armour and your weapons. You can balance various stats by changing your clothes, as well as by attaching artefacts to your person. These boost or reduce various resistances or weaknesses. However, there is no levelling system, and no character creation. The RPG elements really are very light. At its heart, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a shooter, it's just not afraid to tread a little outside of its core genre.
It should also be mentioned that this game has a not undeserved reputation for bugginess. I have never experienced crashes, but many users have. What I have experienced is a fair number of bugged side missions, AI faults and the occasional instance of an enemy clipping through something that they're not meant to. These sorts of bugs tend to be things that I can quite easily overlook, but it will depend on your tolerance for bugginess. There's sadly no getting away from the fact that S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is a fairly buggy game. If this ruins your immersion, you may find S.T.A.L.K.E.R. difficult to enjoy. However I think it's important to bear in mind that this game does have a strong sense of atmosphere which runs deeper than in most games. The bugs may be often distracting, but I never found them unforgivable.
Needless to say, I recommend this game. I've tried to highlight it's strengths and weaknesses. No doubt, the game has its fair share of both. But on balance, for those who can overlook its high level of difficulty and moderate bugginess, there's a lot here to be enjoyed.

I've played this game for many hours on my other account, and I've beaten it twice over. As well, I've played the other two games and probably around 10 STALKER mods including Call of Chernobyl, Misery, Dead Air, Anomaly, and so on, and I still think this is the best STALKER experience you can get right now. The reason why is because this the best fusion of fun and immersion.
Despite all the efforts made by mods like Anomaly to improve the graphics, introduce new survival mechanics, and add new quests, it seems like after a point, they forget that this is a game. For example, in Anomaly (since I have the most experience with it,) you will often be wearing a gasmask unless you want to be smoking cigarettes every 2 seconds to remove radiation from stepping in swamp water. The problem with gasmasks is that if you get hit by anything, even a shitty little swamp dog, you mask will be shattered and you'll basically be half blind until you either fork over a load of money to a technician or somehow scavenge the materials needed to fix it. Shadow of Chernobyl does not mess with these mechanics, and in fact, this game does not even have a repair mechanic! That's not to say that a repair mechanic can't be done right, but in this you can already see the game's ethos: mess around, enjoy the wasteland, and don't waste your time reloading quicksaves because some fucking swamp rat ran into you too hard. In other words, you have more freedom to enjoy the oppressive atmosphere.
This game's atmosphere is also the best of all the games in my opinion. It's hard to determine why, but I think the above point might be the main reason. Instead of being constantly torn out of the immersion by frustration for the mechanics, Shadow of Chernobyl keeps things simple. Of course, this game is not without its bugs, in fact, it's full of them. The worst bugs usually occur with the AI or with the quests, and they can sometimes be game-breaking. Nonetheless, this game is truly unique and definitely worth playing.

The good
One of the creepiest things ever made - there's a constant feeling of dread and knowing that you're never safe
At night time, the creepiness gets amped up
Labs X-10, X-16 and X-18 are all thrilling to the extreme
You really do feel as if you're in a ruined world
Awesome music and effects
Equally awesome background effects - wind, rain, thunder, monster and enemy noises
Eminently moddable
Faithful to the geography of the Pripyat/Chernobyl area
Great weapon and ammo choices
Same with artefacts
Brutal on higher difficulties
Lots of little details - houses, railroads, sheds, silos, etc. The place looks real, and that people once lived and worked there
The bad
Shows it age a little graphically
Can be buggy in places, NPCs getting stuck or becoming unresponsive etc
Weapon and item degradation is a tad unrealistic, no way to fix them

Difficult, scary, moddable - the last one in particular ensures its longevity, with mods providing things from weapons, through giant survival overhauls, to combined worlds (play all three S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games in one!)
I often may struggle to stick to one game during my first playthrough, but I'll always be up for some adventures in the Zone.
