Magie mit Spielkarten

Was haben Poker und Solitär gemeinsam? Nun, man kann mit beidem Feuerbälle werfen!

Gameplay
Im Grunde ist “Runespell: Overture” eine Mischung zwischen Solitär, Poker und einem Sammelkartenspiel wie “Magic”. Wir treten immer gegen einen Gegner an und müssen seine Lebenspunkte auf 0 bringen. Dazu spielen beide Spieler abwechselnd mit 3 Zügen pro Runde und können, ähnlich wie bei Solitär, eine Karte vom Stapel auf einen anderen legen und so Kombinationen erstellen, wie sie beim Poker üblich sind. Also Pärchen, Flushs, Royal Flushs, Full House und so weiter. Zusätzlich kann man dann noch die Karten des Gegners benutzen und sie auf eigene Stapel legen, solange diese nicht bereits mit einer anderen Karte verbunden sind. Ab 5 Karten auf einem Stapel kann man die Kombination dann abschicken, wobei man auch Karten als „Müll“ verwenden kann, um einen Stapel vollzukriegen. Je nach Kombination verursacht man dann Schaden am Feind: Ein Paar verursacht zum Beispiel 8 Schaden, ein Royal Flush ganze 50. Für erlittenen und insbesondere ausgeteilte Schadenspunkte erhalten wir dann sogenannte Ragepunkte, mit denen wir spezielle Fähigkeiten wirken können. Diese können vor Schaden schützen, austeilen, mehr Züge ermöglichen und Vieles mehr. Dabei greifen wir entweder auf Verbündete zurück, die oft etwas teurer an Punkten sind oder wir spielen einmalig verwendbare Zauberkarten, die wir uns durch Kämpfe, Quests oder beim Händler besorgen können. Auf der Weltkarte können wir dann nach beliebigen einige Quests erfüllen oder uns an vereinzelten Gegnern versuchen. Diese sind meist recht einfach, genau wie der Anfang des Spiels. Nur zum Ende hin wird es etwas schwieriger, wodurch meine 10 Stunden Spielzeit entstanden sind. Mit mehr Glück oder auch Talent kann man das Spiel sicherlich innerhalb 6 Stunden abschließen.

Story
Wir spielen einen „Changeling“ , eine Art Wechselbalg, dass ohne Erinnerung in der Kälte aufwacht. Schnell erfahren wir, dass wir der Nachkomme eines alten legendären Herrschers sind und wir einen inneren Drang verspüren, die Festung unseres Vaters aufzusuchen, in der noch nie jemand eingedrungen ist, da sie stark beschützt wird. Unterweges treffen wir dann auf verschiedene Verbündete, die entweder hinter dem Schatz her sind oder andere Gründe haben, den Protagonisten zu unterstützen.
Die Geschichte wird nur in Textform erzählt und ist eigentlich eher eine Rahmenhandlung, da zumindest ich jetzt nicht viel damit anfangen konnte. Ganz nett sind jedoch die realen Länder, die erwähnt werden, was dem Spiel so einen nordischen Hauch gibt. Die Dialoge überraschen zudem nicht wirklich, die Antwortmöglichkeiten sind manchmal aber ganz unterhaltend.

Grafik/Sound
Tja, die Kämpfe oben am Rand des Bildschirms sind ganz ok animiert, aber dennoch wirkt es eher einfach gestaltet. Weitere Animationen sucht man vergebens, Zwischensequenzen bestehen aus Bildern und die Figuren aus Porträtbildern.
Die Musik ist gut, jedoch besteht fast das gesamte Spiel aus nur einer Melodie und das kann auf Dauer schon anstrengend werden. Aber da man Nichts verpasst, kann man ja auch seine eigene Musik anschmeißen!

Fazit
„Runespell: Overture“ ist ein schönes und strategisches Spiel. Allerdings ist eine Zuneigung zu Kartenspielen hier eine eindeutige Voraussetzung. Es gibt eine überschaubare Anzahl an Sonderkarten, sonst muss man sich wohl auf sein Glück und sein Geschick verlassen. Die Story ist zwar nicht wirklich etwas Besonderes, reicht aber für eine Abdeckung. Hauptmerkmal liegt hier eindeutig auf dem Gameplay und das macht gelegentlich doch ziemlich viel Spaß. „Runespell: Overture“ muss man nicht unbedingt kaufen, aber es bietet eine gemütliche Abwechslung für Zwischendurch!

Belangloses und lediglich auf Glück aufgebautes Spielchen. Man muss seine Karten im Voraus spielen, der Gegner macht das Gleiche. Danach erfährt man, ob die Züge sinnvoll waren. Ein seltsames und Spielspaß zerstörendes Gameplay.

Honestly, cards and poker were never my stuff. And so is this game. However, that won't be fair for me to leave a negative review for the game. Because for the card lovers, i can't say its a must have but surely, its a one time give-it-a-go. Its nowhere different than microsoft windows 98 version of card game. Where your screen was rained with deck of cards at the end of winning it. They just mixed some story of evil characters who needs to be defeated till the end of game, like Berendur, Dethgar, Ragnar, Warghul, Wardens Stones, Gullveig by our card master changeling who is the main hero of the story while recruiting some allies to hep you forth. Cool Names. And its like every pair you form, you attack the character taking their hp. One to lose hp first loses the game. But, every level is exactly the same. Get yourself accustomed with how really card works in real life & If spades, clubs, diamonds, aces, jacks, kings, queens are your thing. Give-it-a-go. Though i had been terrible at cards , but I decided to have some change in my gaming schedule and give a try on something entirely new which I had been never familiar with. So, yeah, for the sake of learning something and get better at what I was never good at, I learned a bit on how card really works with this game.

Fun little mash up of Solitaire, Poker, and RPG mechanics. You might think that sounds like an odd mix, and yes it is indeed, but it turns out it was a great idea! It's fun and addicting despite being a fairly simple card game idea. There's a neat campaign mode with a little story to it and the later matches can get significantly more challenging. I think this is one of the most unique RPG mash ups I've played in a while!

Runespell is a RPG card game that follows similar rules to poker. Each fight requires you to deplete your enemies hitpoints by collecting 5 cards together that give you a score. Since the rules are based on poker, a pair is the least amount of points and a royal flush is the most amount of points. You can also collect cards along the way to use your special ability points that you gain during each fight. These cards can be used to shield yourself, attack using spells, or call in allies to help you with your fight.

The game itself is very repetitive as each fight requires the exact same type of actions. However each fight is different as each enemy has different spells and different amount of hit points which can require you to choose your special abilities appropriately based on who you are fighting. The RPG elements are existent from the start and never add anything new throughout the whole game other than you collecting cards that increase your max hit points and your max special ability points.

While the storyline and overall game do not evoke great entertainment to brag about, I did enjoy the game because I enjoy a good card game. I already own many solitaire games that run the same type of repetitiveness as this game offers and I'm fine with that. So if you can deal with a repetitive gameplay without much character progress, then you can enjoy the game. If not, I'd go elsewhere to find more entertaining game. I wish I could say I'm neutral on this game, but since I can't I will offer a weak but yet sincere positive review.

FreeCell Solitaire Poker.
Interesting at Start, barely midway gradually gets boring.
Repetitive gameplay.
Alittle too much to read, with options that does nothing.
Overly aggressive or smart AI opponent.
Grind to accumulate enough credits to purchase heals, fears and thunder.

Staying ingame for 20 straight battles achievement at the beginning already wore me out.
Look up guide and tips, to not miss out battles affecting the final few achievements.

Not worth the full price.
Neutral Recommendation.

Poker + Solitaire, with very lite RPG-style items/spells. Like poker, RNG plays a large role, but good strategy can make your plays more consistent. Best imbibed in short sessions when in the mood for some relaxing card action.

Runespell has a good and innovative concept, blending poker with turn-based rpg, but poor execution.
I found the game very fun the first hour, unfortunaly it got repetitive very fast. There's no way to you or your opponents to improve the damage of the cards combinations. The spells aren't varied either: most of them are just to x damage. After a while you'll realize that all battles are the same.
Story and music are blend and forgettable.

Take one part Faerie Solitaire and two parts Puzzle Quest and mix in a little Poker or Yahtzee for good measure and you will get something like Runespell: Overture.

You're a changeling of some sort and you fight monsters and take quests in exchange for coin and buffs (which come in the form of power-up cards). There's a story but it's not the strongest element in the game. Like the Puzzle Quest games, your battles are determined by playing a mini-game. Instead of match-3 though, the game is a card game similar to poker in which making certain combinations of cards (pairs, 5 of a kind, full house, flush, straight) will do a certain amount of damage to your opponent, who is trying to do the same to you. The ability to steal some cards from your opponent, plus the limited number of moves you get per turn to move cards or play power-ups adds just enough strategy to the game to keep it interesting.

Admittedly, the game can get a bit repetitive after a while and I found the dialogue options to be a bit tedious but fortunately the game allows you to skip them if you want. It's an easy game to learn, and it's an entertaining casual game to play. It seems to be pretty short and the achievements don't seem too difficult to collect if that's your thing.

Finding little gems like this is the reason I buy bundles.

Runespell: Overture melds together classic RPG components with Windows Live's player-vs-player solitaire with poker. I obtained Runespell for free in a pile of coal during the Steam Holiday Sale 2011 event. Receiving the game for free, I simply assumed that Runespell was merely a terrible, no-name title that was not worth playing. It was not until the Summer 2013 that I truly realized what I had come across.

Runespell sports a great soundtrack with honestly a decent storyline. Often times, card games that try to incorporate RPG elements (or just a storyline) end up drowning out the added components with the basic mechanics the card game - Runespell does not do this. If you are a cards-only enthusiast, this may stray a little too far from those roots; if you are an RPG-only enthusaist, this may feel more like a card game. However, if you are willing try a game that can have both, Runespell: Overture is for you.

Verdict: While Runespell: Overture is far from a lump of coal turned into a diamond, but it is definitely a gem. Simply put, Runespell is a fun, player-vs-computer, RPG, solitaire, poker game - and it is done very well. The game is so enjoyable that I honestly look forward to a remake or sequel that would incorporated online cooperative and competitive gameplay features. While it is definitely not worth $10, the current sale of $2 at the time of this review is definitely worth looking into. Here you will find a game that successfully feels like an RPG, while feeling like a card game.
