I sincerely hope that one day RuneScape will return to its glory days but that will not happen unless Jagex starts listening to the players, not only after major backlash. If they bring back polls, lower monetization practices, fix dead content and rework the players experience to make it newbie friendly, we might still have a game for another decade.
TLDR: If you want a second dead end job this is your game.

I’ve played this game since 2007 and this game does not deserve to be listed on steam. The company will outright attack the player-base with their comments from feedback on the recent updates.
RuneScape 3 is a game that’s been around a long time but it deserves better then the figure heads that are in place at Jagex.
If this game would have come out today the game would be dead within a year. That’s how bad the development is of the game and their ability to listen to feedback is.

rich compelling world ready for you to adventure and discover. I can say the world has by far the best questline to follow that I have ever seen in my MMORPG history. Instead of collecting 10 wolf furs, I get a nice unique adventure that has a touch of Monty Python humor to it. This was my first MMORPG and has become the staple of what I compare other mmorpgs with.
Sadly over the years, I have less time to play and so have most of the community to where it is mainly a shell of what it used to be. Most of the world is dead and most of the population dwells in certain spots where the majority just afk instead of chatting. It is pretty much a shell of its former self when it comes to the community.

Got my account stolen and botted, resulted in a permanent ban of my account.
I only played RS3 and loved it, the person who stole my account botted in OSRS, which I have never played.
This wasn't sufficient enough evidence for the customer support, which is terrible, by the way; I cannot stress enough how much of a chore the account management and communicating with customer support really is.
I lost hundreds of hours of progress in the game in the span of one day. <3
I wonder if I should try to play again and risk losing all progress again or just ignore the game forever and lose a lot of potential fun...

You will be mistaken as a bot as it is only a matter of time. If you decide to play this game, don't play this game on Steam. Go to the RuneScape website and play with their official client, as Steam is technically a 3rd party client and can get you banned. Be careful when grinding for levels too, according to all the JMods you are a bot and you are wrong if you do this. You will be mistaken as a bot it is only a matter of time.

This game was super fun and irreplacable, but sadly the mod and the support team is really lackluster, it always takes ages to reply back and return your to your problems, even up until now without a single reply.
My account got falsely banned yesterday for an unknown reason, before anyone said anything, I've checked :
- I've got no VPN turned on
- No multiple logins
- No 3rd party programs at all
- I was playing live infront of my screen skilling.
I was excited for skilling summoning on Double XP live, and running back and forth w/ me infront of my screen using Surge skill to move faster.. and then suddenly bam! got logged out w/ Permanent Ban and the reason was Macro-ing Major Ban.. First of all, on which perspective does training summoning from Bank to Obelisk just to craft pouch is considered Macro?? I was playing manually LIVE infront of my screen bro.. On top of that, they don't give EVIDENCE at all on what base am i macro-ing?? It's more like one-sided judgment.
All in all, I tried to reach them, even try to talk to several mods from their Twitter, Reddit, Support, whatsoever to no avail and not even a SINGLE REPLY from them.
I've seen a lot of people in the same case like me, like A LOT.. They didn't even have a chance to get reviewed.. I guess Jagex really doesn't care about population, instead only the money pouring in for their business.. I'm on membership, but maybe if i'm a Premier Member, they would talk to me..
I still hope they would get back and restore my account, but I doubt it really..
Peace.

RuneScape 3 in it's current form is a bit different from how it was in the past. They have over the last many years been moving away from the grinding-based leaderboard simulator that it was originally, and that OSRS still is if that's the type of gameplay you prefer. They've instead been trying to take focus away from the game just being about farming all your skills to max level and turn it towards the gameplay and lore that they're building up. The game always had a nice lore to it, but in recent years they've been weaving together much more thorough and higher impact stories, building up to one of many massive, world-changing events. Your character is special in this story, being the World Guardian, and you specifically play a pivotal role in essentially every storyline. Cliche, maybe, but isn't that really how most MMO's go? If you're gonna run one character across decades of storyline, clearly they're gonna be special.
The gameplay has definitely evolved over the years as well, going from the more basic skilling of past where you'd usually just stand at certain resource nodes for hours and hours on end, and have begin to incorporate less AFK mechanics, more engaging gameplay, while still leaving some AFK options for those that want to play a bit more relaxed. The options still exist, but personally I find the more immersive skilling methods to capture my attention far more for the most part.
All in all I don't really know what I'm saying here? I just felt like rambling a bit about a game that's meant a lot to me throughout much of my life. Just be aware that, whichever version you pick up, RS3 or OSRS, if it captures you then be prepared to spend hundreds and hundreds of hours in it. And remember, you never really quit, only take breaks.

My family and I are literally worse off for having played this game,
Run. Escape.
For real though, it's a true story. And my parents marriage is healthy again and the most stable and loving relationship out of all the marriages I know. But the addiction really hurt my Mom for 10+ years.
But it is a fun game.

I played this religiously from around 2010 to 2015, maybe give or take a couple years on either end. Spotless record, loved the time I played in the game, worked hard all the time for skills and spent hundreds on a membership going a few years. Never scripted, botted, auto-clicked, anything. I stopped playing for a few years, popping in once a year or so to see what's new. This year I tried to log in, and found that in March someone had hacked my account and used it for real world trading. Apparently, this type of ban is unappealable despite it being very obviously from a hack. There's no way to contact support in a ticket for this type of ban, unless you reach out on Twitter (where they will refer you to the support articles).
Tl;dr absolutely no support for longtime fans in need of help. Never speaking highly of this game or company again.

Ironman Mode.
You can't trade with anyone, which is the idea, but it also makes it impossible to buy treasure hunter keys, and you're removed from the mtx-affected economy. It's an added challenge for sure, but the rewards feel so much greater in this mode. It's 100% saved the game for me.

This has been quite the trip. When I first played, I was 10 and I didn't even speak english, I learned it entirely thanks to this game.
I have yet to find a MMO that has a story and quests at least as good as in this game, RuneScape really outshines eveyone in that aspect.
The music is glorious and the graphics are dated (always have been) yet charming.
The combat is clunky but the (official) wiki has enough guides to help you figure everything out.
Most of the content can be done solo which is a plus in my eyes.
Although I recommend this game I feel like I must warn any newcomer that this game requires patience and a lot of it.
It took me a very long time to get all my skills to max level and an even longer time to get one of the rarest in-game achievement, I think nostalgia helped a lot in keeping me going.
In conclusion I have played RuneScape for over half of my life (at the time I'm writing this), I even met the devs and the original creators. I played this game with all my friends be it at home, on the middle school library's computer, during college classes or even at work and I don't regret a single minute of it. It has been a pleasure I'll probably log in now and then to look at what new content will eventually come out but I am finally done.
Cheers Jagex, even if you often tend to mess things up, I still owe you a big part of my childhood. Thank you for the good times.

Funfact, Last time I played runescape on steam was 24 october 2020.
gg with the bragging that the runescape moderators are aware of all kind of hacking software that is been using in the game and they delete all the real hackers out.
I will never play this game anymore since I dont even get a chance to have my accout back.
So please give me my account back.
Kinda waste of grinding when the mods like to ban random players and you lose everything you fought for in your life.
Rather play sexprison vr 24h a day than runescape again.

Expanding Horizons
“Nothing changes in the day-by-day, but then we look back and nothing is the same...” - Color Theory - Glory Days
In a continuation on my overall review of RuneScape, I now find myself playing the modern iteration that I left years ago.
I’ll be honest, I came into RuneScape 3 with a very open mind, and I’m still reeling by how vastly different things are, but now with more positivity than I did prior. Skepticism aside... I like this game more than Old School RuneScape, despite all my nostalgia belonging to the latter. It’s primarily because that while Old School had almost everything I needed out of the title when I went back to it, RuneScape 3 provides better options for skilling/combat purposes and is actively engaging, physically and socially, rather than a side activity I open up while I play something else. However, Old School still remains the better choice as it’s better managed by more people who actually have real passion about this game and its playerbase, and not PR mouthpieces who want to appease a board of directors. (Looking at you, Mod Warden.) But that’s not to say RuneScape 3 isn’t worth a try. Quite opposite, in fact.
The Good Upsides
The free-to-play experience is expanded. That’s the biggest plus I came back to. There’s too many changes to really put here, but the option to have magic bows, defenders from the Warriors’ Guild, and more magic robes up to Mystic is so welcome. I almost forgot to mention but the Chaos Elemental, King Black Dragon, and Falador Giant Mole are all free-to-play bosses for you to kill too.
The Evolution of Combat now has an auto mode named “Revolution”, which will automatically do the skills you choose to in a certain order. One-click RuneScape is back, just with much more animation work. You can also manually override with your own skills should you choose to. Food also became less of a priority since your adrenaline that you didn’t spend translates back to healing you 2% of your life for a maximum of 20%. I’ve spent my time semi-AFK killing Moss Giants without ever taking food because of that.
Somehow, the community over here is more talkative and friendlier than that of Old School RuneScape. I’ve had numerous conversations with other players that didn’t involve trying to upset people. I’ve had conversations where we’re all reminiscing about our olden days in middle school, trying to fish for lobsters for a Rune Scimitar, or even how Smithing used to be quick but is now slower, yet more rewarding. You will find a conversation anywhere, and people will be more than happy to talk. Beyond that, the community is also more open in helping you out rather than suggesting you Google it first or use the wiki. We’re still noobs here.
QoL changes are wonderful and better for people who initially hated the thing. Mining and Smithing aren’t aggravating and induce carpal tunnel, stuff is rebalanced to make sense, e.g. Level 50 Mining/Smithing for Rune, which requires 50 defence/50 attack to wield. Having a tool belt is excellent, since it’s a permanent +1 inventory space, forever. You ever forget your tinderbox? No more, it’s always with you.
Combine these things and I believe that more people are laid back in this game, not having to worry about wasting time. They’re enjoying the moment, even if it’s only a few spare minutes. It’s refreshing to see people just hang out and skill together, like old times. Partially contradicting this though, the RS3 Reddit is a toxic wasteland. Just don’t go there, nobody likes anything.
Do you like fashion as an endgame objective? This game’s got it, and although a lot of it is MTX (we’ll get there), a good chunk is free to earn through gameplay, and this game has never had more freedom of expression in player customization. No two people will ever be alike unless they purposefully chose to wear the same exact cosmetics. There’s so much creativity going on around the world of RS3.
The Middle Ground
RuneScape 3 has a very uneven beginning. While you still go through Tutorial Island, you only will ever spend less than 5 minutes in there and then the next few hours in Burthorpe and Taverley, the new tutorial area. Yes, the mystery that plagued most kids in the day of “What is beyond the Taverley gate?” is now free-to-play, but a permanent tutorial area. Even though it is a ‘tutorial’, a lot of it is unintuitive for most players. They should know how to adjust their UI as well as understand that Revolution can’t sustain them to endgame. If you can get past this very rough learning curve, you should be fine.
Bots are still present here, you can’t escape them. However, they’re not a complete swarm and there’s rarely any bot farm that seems to last long. I’ve reported known bots and they’ve disappeared the next day, but that could be placebo. Also, the Grand Exchange isn’t a gambling haven of spam bots anymore. +1,000.
The economy is terrible. Everything’s hyperinflated, but this is also a little positive as you can earn money fairly quickly. For bond comparisons, 30m gp is a drop in the bucket to make in a few days, whereas in Old School 5m gp felt like an entire month of minor gains. I know which game I’m playing to make my bond money.
The Downright Ugly
You’re a Chosen One in this story. It went from “You’re a nobody adventurer” in Old School to “You are The World Guardian, The Seventh Signature Hero. Please help us save a cat.” over here. How’d we fall in line with the most generic of generics? If everybody’s The World Guardian, nobody is The World Guardian.
Server load is incredibly suboptimal. You can’t have more than 400 people in a world before it noticably lags, and the max capacity is reduced to 1,500. We’re supposed to go forward here, not backwards!
There’s really no escaping the MTX. It’s fairly predatory since you’re rewarded free keys to spend to open lootboxes, and there’s constantly a promotion going on to incentivize spending. But, I’ve gotten a fair share of good rewards even without spending. You’re also limited 10 keys at a time to freely obtain, so you need to use them. It’s unavoidable. What you don’t need however, is to spend your money on anything relevant to this.
Yak Tracks. These are the “battlepass” system of the game. I don’t think I need to detail what that means, but let’s just say it’s increasingly grindy and there is a secondary layer you need to purchase with either bonds or Premier Membership (Basically super members) to fully unlock all cosmetics/rewards. Scumbaggery afoot.
Good game updates haven’t been seen in a long while. It’s kind of obvious that the board of directors want more MTX and don’t want to appease the playerbase by giving us good stuff to play with. Imagine dripfeeding the playerbase a lore-driven event in-game, but make it a mini-quest that’s disguised as 4-weeks worth of a tower defense minigame you can AFK and let the AI sort by itself.
Bittersweet Conclusions
Despite even worse shortcomings than OSRS by a country mile, RuneScape 3 remains a very competitive game to try out. It’s clearly obvious things are not in great shape, but Jagex are trying, with some being very passionate about their line of work in comparison to others. I know it’s hard for people to accept change, but it can be amazing and it sometimes can be for the best. You have to be honest with yourself, would you rather spend months grinding out a single 99, or work on several other 99s in that same amount of time, with so much more variety in how to approach a game and the amount of money you can make? I’d do both knowing it’s still valuable because I had fun doing so.
I will be playing both Old School and 3 for a long while. I just wish that the community would stop being split apart and instead opt for something more united...
Like 2011Scape.

Graphics have updated a lot since then.
There is a lot more content.
Love how I can still bring my old maxed out character back from the dead.
It's nice to play this for the nostalgia but I can't see myself playing it as much as before.
Overall a solid title a nice alternative to TIBIA, GUILD WARS, GUILD WARS 2 or any other big MMO.
Runescape is one of the few mainstream F2P titles I fully support to live on forever.

Fun game, terrible company.
The company in charge of this game has been very hit or miss over the years. During recent events they have shown a complete lack of inability to be transparent, listen to their community, and problem solve effectively.
Starting March 4th 2021, the game suffered a massive bug that prevented many players form logging into the game entirely. As of April 6th 2021, this had yet to be fixed. During this time the company has refused to give exact details on what happened or the number of accounts it affected. Near the end of March they restored a very small amount of accounts and promptly took a 5 day weekend where there was absolutely no communication. As of now they continue to handle the situation poorly by ignoring community feedback and proceeding with the game as if nothing has happened even though the majority of those players are still unable to play.

This game is addicting to a certain personality type, but imo not very fulfilling. There are fun things to do but you often need mid-high stats and a good amount of cash. You typically get both of these things by mind-numbingly repeating the exact same actions over and over for literally days worth of hours, if not months in some cases. RS3 is a LOT better about it than OSRS however. My introduction to RuneScape was in 2007 and I have a lot of nostalgia for OSRS but I cannot ignore how painfully slow everything is and I recommend it even less.
It's an MMO so of course progression is going to take copious amounts of time, but RuneScape sometimes feels like a violation of human rights. I can't explain why it can be so addicting but I've experienced it and hated myself for spending days clicking the same things just to increase a skill level that in return allows me to move on to a different repetitive clicking activity to get that skill level number even higher.
With the amount of time you'll likely spend playing RuneScape you could experience hundreds of other games to completion, spend time with people irl, and overall have a more fulfilling life.
There's 28 skills in the game so surely you'll find a couple you like or don't mind training, but RuneScape does this thing in every facet of the game where in order to access more of the content you like and want to play you have to trudge through typically hours of other game activities that you don't enjoy, which is one of the biggest mistakes of any MMO and I believe is likely a contributor to what feels like a diminishing playerbase or at least diminishing enthusiasm. I'd guess most players experience a love/hate relationship for this game like I do and this is part of why.
Something I found enjoyable when I did play was questing. There is a rich lore, and hundreds of quests with often humorous or entertaining storylines and dialogue. I like the npc characters in this game.
I've quit and come back multiple times. I finally quit for another 2 and a half years starting in 2018, and I only played it again recently because of it's introduction to steam and noticing that I could easily 100% the current achievements because I luckily already have a high level account.
One great thing I can say is RS is not as p2w as most games, but it does still offer a healthy amount of microtransactions. Some will argue that the microtransactions absolutely ruined the game by making it p2w but i think they're massively overestimating the impact. It would require an amount of money that's unrealistic for the majority of the playerbase to get too far ahead.
I will add a disclaimer that I thoroughly do not enjoy PVP and I know that a lot of people are really into it and play RS for it. My biggest reason for not enjoying it is that you usually need very expensive gear to be competitive and it's not worth the massive time investment for me.
Pros:
Social aspect if you play with/meet new friends
Extensive clan support
P2W is almost nonexistent for it being an MMO
Humorous, entertaining atmosphere and quests/storylines/npcs
Active development team that puts a lot of time into updates/new content
Still better than the majority of MMOs probably
Cons:
Mind-numbingly repetitive and boring tasks make up the majority of your playtime
Constantly forced to play game content you don't care for to get to the content you do enjoy
Jagex support can be shoddy
This game is the sole reason I have carpal tunnel syndrome
Edit to add another thing that's incredible about this game is that RS3 has received hundreds of quality of life improvements over the years. The developers have actually listened to suggestions and added numerous settings and changes that make it more enjoyable to play. Pokemon Go is another game I've put thousands of hours into but they could never be bothered to make the smallest QoL improvements after 4 years and I really appreciate that this game did.

There are also quite a few microtransactions and time-based events that encourage you to purchase microtransactions in the game. This isn't inherently bad, but if you strongly dislike that kind of content it could be a turn-off. I personally like playing the game's ironman mode which disables the ability to trade with other players and benefit from many of the overpowered MTX features. The game is quite fun like that, I get to enjoy a wealth of content at my own pace and feel like the items I've acquired and the levels I've gained feel meaningful.
Even with those negatives, it's a very fun game that can last you an extremely long time if it hits the right notes for you. If you're looking for nostalgia or simpler gameplay, there is also Old School Runescape. Both games are very fun in their own right.

Looking back I was definitely addicted from 07-09. It's just so good. This new RS(3) is not the same, but it's still fun. I think 'casuals' will find it easier to get into and enjoy, and more of a social game while you grind. PVP is dead in RS3 but PVM and other random activities (Fashionscape, achievement/diary grinding etc) are very much alive. Some Elitists in the high tier PVM but usually you can find a clan that will help you.
This is an awful review but anyway games great, subtract the terrible MTX and at this point, kind of bad developers. OSRS is also fantastic if you don't mind the old style of graphics and combat. I love both. This game could definitely use a 'remake' of the map though, it suffers a lot from a small map with too much crap on it. Oh, also it has the best quests in any MMO, though if you're like me you'll hold that space bar down the entire time and then read the lore after.

Excellent Skill and Questing System.
Levelling can be done mostly AFK. ( e.g W84 Portables, Protean Items )
Late/End game PVM content is quite nice.
The Graphics are decent when compared to the old days.
Has the option to pay for Membership using In-game currency.
Players can merch around the Grand Exchange(Stock Market) without paying any taxes.
Treasure Trails are rewarding.
The Cons:
Somewhat P2W and MTX.
Dead Minigames.
Dead PVP.
Price's of Discontinued Rare's are getting out of control.
Combat system might not be appealing to new players.
