Playing just the prologue, you can see the controls are broken. I can't adjust the mouse sensitivity at all in Ruiner. The targeting is extremely slow and you won't be able to use most fire arms efficiently. Meaning you'll be stuck using the sledge hammer to kill enemies. This would work fine if you could move as fast as they do, but the dash ability is also broken. It works some times, when it does there's a delay in committing to the move from 0.5 seconds to a full second.
That's not the end of the issues: All fire arms, safe for the shotgun, don't kill anything unless the game feels like it. You frequently shoot at enemies only to see them ignore bullet damage and then you die. That would be fine if the bad guys actually got staggered or something. A bullet is suppose to hurt no? In Ruiner it's a decoration on the screen.
A seriously broken slop of a game, which I think has been abandoned by its developer. Now it's just Devolver selling this as a scam. If you're going to purchase this, first make sure it's at a very high sale percentage, second do read about all the issues that have been flagged on the community discussions. I don't recommend broken games.

On the second main boss, dying causes the game to soft lock, and you must close the application entirely + reboot the game to make another attempt.
On easy or normal, this is likely unnoticed. On hard mode, where dying is a part of life, this quickly destroys any efforts the game originally had put in.
It's a great game, so far. But with a devastating bug that I am currently facing, it's unplayable. I also checked the troubleshooting discussions. Someone had the same problem as I did 2 YEARS AGO. No fixes, and not even a response.
Buy this at your own risk.

Premise and presentation:
There's some good stuff going on here which has a lot of Hotline Miami 1 vibes. You're mostly kept in the dark, given basic motivation, and you have enough info about the world to keep it feeling somewhat immersive. There's nothing deep or interesting happening from how far I got into the story (about 2/3 of the way), but the world does feel rich and populated. The mixed style between sprites and 3D models is a bit odd at first, but I got used to it quickly and found the visual design (mostly) very appealing. Sometimes the level layouts are just too dark and you end up stumbling around, but it's not too often.
Gameplay:
(I played on Hard mode, so my take is based on that.)
From the get-go, the controls feel a little stiff. I'm far from a stranger to this type of game, so I have enough comparisons to know that something is just off here. You have an i-frame dash move, but it's by far the worst I've ever seen in any game I've ever touched. There's a tangible delay on it, and it can be so unresponsive that you have to mash the button a few times for the dash to actually register. You can slow down time and set up a trail of dashes which sounds cool in concept, but in execution the world moves so quickly that any targets in your path will probably move out of the way. And sometimes (seemingly at random) I'd queue up a dash, only to find that the game just stopped caring and decided it wasn't going to execute it. Sometimes it says you're unable to dash in a certain direction when you aim it, but if you do a real-time dash it's fine. To make matters worse, the dash is tied to the direction you're moving, so you're stuck in the 8 cardinal directions on M&K, making it impossible to real-time dash to critical targets. While you'd think this means you just need to use the aimed dashes, you need energy to even start that, so if you run out, you're boned. I'm harping on about this because your evasion is the only thing functionally keeping you alive. The most vital action you take is both lagged and inconsistent.
There's a strong focus on time distortion, which is usually fine. I love things like SUPERHOT and Ghostrunner, but here the speed of time is influenced by far too many small factors, and worst of all, the game stutters whenever you hit an enemy with your melee attacks. This is nice for indicating that you hit your target, but it seriously messes with your timing of attacks and dashes. Even worse is that there's no option to disable it. Nuclear Throne has a similar feature and you're given the choice of turning it down/ off. Here, you're just stuck feeling like your computer is struggling to run the damage values when a hit lands.
In combat, you're given a ranged weapon and a melee weapon. You have a pistol with infinite ammo reserves (meaning it needs to be reloaded still) and a melee weapon that varies based on your progression in the story, but is likewise indestructible and therefore always with you. You can pick up various types of guns with limited ammo and melee weapons with limited durability, but the guns are almost universally garbage. Their projectile speed is sluggish, their damage is minimal, the reticle doesn't *always* line up with where the shots will go, and you get more exp after a fight for every weapon on the ground. Everything is pointing to you avoiding guns except for a few bosses. The shotgun and minigun are passable but there's not much beyond that. The melee weapons you can pick up vary in usefulness. It basically feels like going from a pipe wrench to a sledge hammer. The sledge is more powerful, but feels bulkier and loses some finesse. Regardless, expect to be throwing a lot of whiffs, because the hit detection is really, really bad. I'd be standing up against a stationary object, swinging my sword and it felt like I was playing the first mission in an XCOM campaign. One of your unlockable attacks is an AoE cone, but sometimes even though you'd see an enemy get hit by the visual effects of the cone, nothing would happen. I can only guess that there was some kind of invisible wall or something blocking the path.
The enemies in the game don't really evolve much. Their AI is universal no matter what you're fighting, it's just that they become tankier and more evasive as you progress. Damage output doesn't have any noticeable changes, but maybe it's just me. So get used to wasting more ammo if you bother using guns, and missing more swings with your melee attacks, because the enemies gain evasion dashes just like yours, except they don't have a huge delay to deal with. There so little variety in what you fight that it ends up feeling really grindy, sort of like an MMO. The bosses mostly feel like reskins of each other, they just each gain a layer of bullshit from the previous version. Also of note, the bosses just feel dissatisfying to fight. Much of the time you're just chasing down something with fifty times as much health as you that evades twice as often, and deals twice as much damage. Rarely is there ever some mechanic you have to counterplay, it's just really, really bland all around.
When you upgrade your skills and abilities, it feels like you're just treading water. There's pretty much never a point at which you feel like you're gaining some kind of tangible advantage. One of the upgrades you can get increases your pistol's damage by 50%. By the time you unlock that option, your pistol is vastly outdated as a weapon. You can increase the potency of your slo-mo move (which basically just turns things into SUPERHOT, except your dash is STILL lagged and inconsistent, meaning you'll need to tap the dash button a few times for it to work) but it doesn't increase your movement or anything during that time. It's just even slower. You don't have any kind of advantage in being able to dodge attacks or whatever, and your controls are still lagged, you just get to watch yourself die more slowly.
There's a theme on getting kill combo chains, but toward the latter half of the game, enemies spawn so infrequently that you never get the chance to build up combos. Even if you kill them fast, they don't show up fast enough to keep going. Considering there's a mechanic that lets you move faster and deal more damage if you chain together finishing moves, it sucks that the game deliberately keeps you from utilizing it.
Overall the gameplay feels like it had some great inspirations, but the execution was terrible.
Sound:
Most of the sound effects were fitting, but didn't carry much weight to them, and sometimes wouldn't play at all, though this was infrequent. I'd say the SFX were passable but never made the game feel good through its implementation.
The music is a mixed bag. I absolutely love a portion of it, and the rest is bordering on noise. Not the unpleasant noise like ultra-hardcore deathmetal or dubstep, but more like a jumble of drums, musical tones, and ambient background sounds of an alley way. It's very much one of those soundtracks that can be hit or miss based on your personal palette. It's got a very distinctive sound to it, there's no denying that.
Technical:
I've got PC specs on the relatively higher end of things, and it runs fine on ultra settings.
In regard to bugs, there weren't that many, but the ones I did come across made me need to reset an entire level. The one that caused me to stop playing is when I got to the very end of a level but everything bugged out and I couldn't interact with any objects in the world, including the elevator to leave.
Conclusion:
Clearly this game resonates with some people, but I'm not one of them. Looks like I'm at the character limit now. x_x

Introduction
Cyberpunk is one of those genres where the most important aspect that you need to nail is arguably the atmosphere. The vibe. The ambience. The aura. Yes, we got CP 2077, but that game still left a lot to be desired. Thus, I browsed through Steam catalog, searching for a hidden from this genre. That's how I stumbled upon RUINER.
Pros
- Stylistic graphic style that compliments the game
- Large variety of futuristic weapons
- Many abilities that let you carve your own playstyle
- Enemies has excellent diversity
- Banger soundtrack
Cons
- Most boss fights are frustrating and lacks creativity
- For the most parts, no voice acting
Gameplay
RUINER is played from a 2.5 D perspective. As the unnamed protagonist, you'll be playing in two different sections: the hub area and the combat area. The former is located at Rengkok South, the fictional city the game took place in. Here, you can explore the run-down city, interact with other side characters and even trigger side missions. This is when the graphics and aesthetic department really shine; from brightly-lit neon signs to the occasional drones hovering by, the developers make sure that no stones were left unturned in designing the world.
Of course, the combat area is the real meat here. This is where you'll be fighting and killing like a maniac. You have two weapon slots: one melee and one ranged. On default, you have the lead pipe (
or a katana later on
) and the RUINER gun with unlimited durability/ammo. But the real fun comes from wielding the big guns, and boy does this game has a lot of them. There's the standard weapon archetypes like shotguns, revolvers, etc. But there's also more experimental ones such as railguns, plasma rifles and literal freaking laser beams. Bloody good fun.
Next up: the abilities. These are powerful gadgets and powers that you can use to even the battle. You use skill points (found by just exploring the combat areas) to buy them and can spend more on upgrading them. Do note though that you're never given enough skills in one playthrough to buy them all. However, the game does encourage you to experiment with them and create your own playstyle.
There's also tons of enemy factions in RUINER as almost every level will introduce a new enemy group that is usually more lethal and demented than the previous ones. The game will also occasionally toss non-faction foes that can appear in any level such as turrets, flying mines and suicide bombers. The steadily increasing difficulty make sure that you're always kept on your toes. As you grew stronger, so are the opposing force.
Apart from that, at the end of each level, you'll face head bounties, which are basically boss fights. To me, this is easily the weakest aspect of the game. This is because these battles are just repetitive bullet sponges opponents with minor differences. This gets even worse in the later levels where the bosses can now teleport and dash around the area, making an unnecessarily drawn out fight even longer. The exceptions towards this is the main boss fights:
Nerve, TrafficKing (first form) and Sick Sisters
, as they actually have unique gimmicks added in their fights.
Story
Pretty basic plot. The store page description already spelled out everything you need to know, and it remains the same throughout 90% of the game. It is only during the final level that a plot twist was introduced,
revealing the true identity of your brother and HER
. It's not a groundbreaking story by any means, but it's serviceable and gets the job done.
Length and Replayability
Length : It took me 17.6 hours to complete the game once on Hard difficulty and complete Arena + Speedrun mode (more on it later). I did die quite often, so experience may vary.
Replayability : Low amount. Even though there is a New Game Plus, there isn't really any reason to play through the story again. One and done journey.
The Rest
- Arena: a simple game mode where you survive against 10 waves of enemies. Rack up high scores by chaining combos and avoiding deaths.
- Speedrun: Exactly what it says on the tin. No hub area, no cutscenes, no dialogs. Be quick and efficient.
- After each battle, you'll be given a grade; it's determined by on how many times you die and time taken to complete it.
- You can change the protagonist's outfit by accomplishing certain milestones. It's purely cosmetic though.
- Leveling up is done through the Karma system. Higher levels unlock better abilities (you unlock them first before buying using skill points)
Verdict
RUINER is a damn good cyberpunk game. You never get to explore the whole of Rengkok, but the one city block you're stuck in is stunningly detailed. Combat is absolutely excellent, and the addition of abilities adds more layers to it. It's brutal, it's visceral and it's cathartic. I have an absolute blast here; therefore, I recommended it to those that are similarly interested in this genre.

The brutally straightforward combat mixed with the mesmerizing and hardcore music tracks of Zamilska and Sidewalks and Skeletons blend together to put you in a battle trance.
I just wished the story was a bit longer.

Get it on sale if it's under $10 only.
Pros:
Setting
Shootin and slashin fools is fun.
Hits feel impactful
Somewhat unique story delivery
Cons:
Limited range of vision makes dodging sometimes only useful if you spam it.
Short: 6 hours-ish
Minor gripe: sometimes hard to tell when you are able to do a finisher on someone in the earlier levels.
Other notes:
Linear. Despite what people may think, this isn't a con, but I wanted to note it.
Responses in dialogue don't seem to matter much. I don't really think this is a con. It seems intentional rather than lazy or an oversight.

Story is okish, basically the revenge cliche you see in a lot of movies/games with a bit of a twist mixed in.
Word is really nice to look at, kinda wished there were more zones to visit and more of the city hub to go around and explore.
Gunplay is ok, kinda wished there was a possibility to have some sort of armory where you can pick what loadout you want not just hoping for good drops from enemies.
I give this game a 8/10. There is room from improvement if they make a sequel, it would be nice if they tried a more rpg style game in this world.

Combat is great with a wide array of weapons to choose from, some better than others. However the combat does tend to get incredibly difficult when you choose hard mode as you will be dying countless times due how the devs balanced this game. Once you fight your first Angel, the difficulty spike goes up at a 90 degree angle where the game just swarms you with enemies while you deal with the boss.
Some problems with the skills because in late game it gets difficult enough that it forces you to always use the Reflex skill and the Overload skill in order to be able to survive enemies that just spawn or teleport behind your back and kill you.
Overall a flawed but fun experience.

What's that? One or two of you may ask. You see, going into the game, I made the mistaken assumption that it was going to work properly. It turns out that was wishful thinking. Despite my gaming PC being significantly stronger than the recommended specs for this game, it was choppy. Continuously. It didn't even seem like the framerate was low, just that it was going in and out of sync. Funnily enough, it was playing much better on my far weaker laptop, but that's not where I want to play my games.
I went through the forum and saw other complaints similar to mine, from a long time ago. They were unaddressed. Now certainly, there might be some obscure setting combination somewhere that could fix this. Perhaps if I install a certain version of my GPU drivers, or if I run it on a full moon. At this point though, I hardly care. I expected a nifty little action game to waste some time having fun, not a chore. I'm certainly not invested enough to try and make the game do what it should be doing anyway, that is play well on systems that meet, or exceed, the recommended specs.
Sorry, but I can't recommend this game. I may come back and try it again later on, in the unlikely event this is patched. But then again, I probably won't. Lots of other fish in the sea.

I can't wait till i finished this game to contribute my review to a community, because possibly you guys
could consider to grab it during this 2021 Autumn Sale, i meant i got this game for only 3 USD yesterday,
but the quality that the game contains even worth for 40 USD,
alright if you love Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, or some sort of fast paced action game, this may be your another dope of genre collection,
this game set place in the dystopian society in the future, but that's all i want to say about the story or protagonist, because i want you to feel it yourself, but what i certain is if you like those game as i mentioned above
you will like or love this one for sure, hack-slash, many types of gun fires, and skill trees that you could up or retrieve a skill points anytime as you want, to adapt the style of play or to make the advantage over your enemies (speaking of Enemies, this game has difficulties to choose, so don't worry)
and the topping on all of those is music, dark electro that perfectly match with the game play and the scenes
so it's very cheap now, try it! don't be overthinking.

Verdict
RUINER is a captivating and visceral isometric shooter featuring great dialogue and atmosphere. Though the plot is interesting with its twists and turns, it is nonetheless a short-lived title clocking in at barely over 5 hours. I would highly suggest the developers make a more fleshed-out sequel to this game, which I’m sure fans would warmly welcome. As for gamers, I recommend getting this on sale.
Plot & Goal
You play as a nameless, and speechless, hitman in a dystopian cyberpunk world. In order to avoid any spoilers, I can only say so much about the plot. Essentially, you are tasked with hunting down certain rival gangs and individuals at the behest of your “boss”. This ultimately sends you on a quest to find your lost brother, uncovering secrets of your past as progress.
Though the dialogue in the game is gritty, clever, and creative, the player, being speechless, communicates with NPCs through two dialogue options, usually “nod” or “shrug” or “crack knuckles”. I couldn’t figure out how any of these dialogue choices truly mattered with the exception of learning more information from NPCs or skipping ahead. In a future game, it would be nice to have more dialogue options, or at least have more meaningful options.
Gameplay
This is perhaps the best top-down shooter I’ve played so far. You have access to two kinds of damage output. Guns vary from your basic RUINER auto-pistol with unlimited ammunition to laser rifles, flamethrowers, sawblade launchers, railguns, incendiary shotguns, and more. Each of these has satisfying gunplay and specific effects on enemy corpses. Melee weapons range from the default pipe and eventually katana to incendiary mauls and laser swords. To access these weapons, you can either loot enemy corpses, hack weapons safes, or, with an unlocked skill, have a weapon of choice dropped in by drone. When an enemy is dazed, you can use a finishing move for extra credits and Karma.
With skill points, you can unlock and upgrade five different skill trees, each of which is tied to a certain key or button on the controller. These range from shields to supply drones, improved reflexes (ie slow motion), healing, area of effect damage, charged melee swings, more dashes, improved energy and health, and so on.
There are various enemy types in the game, each with their strengths and weaknesses. Some enemies are simple thugs with crude weapons while others are hive-minded zombies, suicide bombers, phase-shifting androids, clawed cyborgs, and much more. In order to defeat these, you will have to bring the right weapons and tactics to the fight. Flamethrowers and shields are great for hordes, while dashing and railguns are great for phase-shifting androids. You will have to be quick on your toes, because when a variety of these enemies approaches you all at once, you can easily become overwhelmed. Also, watch out for vampiric mines which can drain health or energy. Upon completion of a level, you are given a score which takes into account deaths, combos, and time spent. All-in-all, once you become accustomed to the gameplay, it’s hard to put the controller down.
Visuals
The game’s visual strength lies in its creative art direction and visual effects. While the graphical fidelity is nothing to write home about (it is an isometric game, after all), the gore and particle effects are satisfying. Nothing quite matches watching an enemy’s head flying off 30 feet, or firing a particle beam through scores of enemies as they’re incinerated. The cyberpunk setting is decent, but most of the settings where the combat takes place are rather simple and dull, and it’s hard to tell one level from another. The comic book style of the dialogue prompts are well done and fit into the overall immersion.
Audio
For one, there is minimal voice acting besides grunts or screams from combat or dialogue. Nonetheless, the game has a great synth-based soundtrack that acts as a heartbeat for the visceral combat, not unlike Doom 2016. The combat sounds are satisfying, especially when utilizing the meatier guns like grenade launchers, railguns, and lightning arc rifles.
Controls
Having used both an Xbox One controller and mouse and keyboard, I would strongly suggest players utilize a controller for this game. While some simpler isometric shooters like Hotline Miami play well, if not better, with a mouse and keyboard, the same cannot be said for RUINER. With so many special abilities at your disposal, coupled with fast-paced combat, it’s hard for me to recommend anything besides a controller for this game. The control schemes for the game are perfect, though aiming at just the right spot with a controller stick has always been an issue for me with isometric shooters; thankfully, most of your enemies will engage you in close-quarters, so precision isn’t in high demand here.
Performance
Running an RTX2070 Super and Intel i7 10th Gen, the game ran flawlessly for me at max settings, while still keeping my computer cool and thus my fan quiet.
Stability
I experienced no crashes, memory leaks, freezes, bugs, or glitches. The game is stable.

This is one of my all time favourite games. I bought it on PS4 when it came out and I liked it that much I got the platinum trophy. I bought it again on PC recently and played it yesterday while waiting for The Ascent to drop.
It's still an awesome game, the graphics, story, gameplay and music are all top notch. It has a killer soundtrack that I downloaded and still listen to quite often.
You can finish the game in about 6 or 7 hours, enjoying the story and exploring the city. Then you can speedrun it in less than half that time and play the arena mode for leaderboards.
This is a great cyberpunk twinstick action adventure and really does have that Akira feel.
There's a mix fast paced gunplay and melee combat with lots of skills to upgrade and master.
I purchased Ruiner in a sale for 3 quid, what an absolute bargain.
If like what you see in the trailers just buy this game.

Amazing soundtrack and aesthetics.
Melee weapons feel like something out of Kill Bill.
Shotguns sound like God slamming his car door.

Executions liquefy enemies.
You kick open chests like you told them to put their teeth on the curb.
You'll die a lot but you'll love it and push through.

then you have to get RUINER. Similar mechanics, although not a top-down shooter, bomb ass soundtrack by zamilska and amazing aesthetic, except unlike HLM's retrowave it goes full dystopian cyberpunk.
the story wasn't anything special, although i admit i didnt expect the ending, it doesn't feel that deep, same with the characters, whom i love wholeheartedly, and lack of lore and cutscenes makes me sad, but for Reikon's first game, in my opinion, it is acceptable. You run around, shoot, slash and kill, thats the main focus of it, and RUINER does a delicious job at it.
I definitely recommend buying it at least to support the developers and fund RUINER 2. IF RUINER 1 was this awesome, imagine what they can do for RUINER 2 with a decent budget.
Thank you for making this obscure gem, Reikon games. And thank you, whoever is reading, for buying this game, if you did, or at least for checking it out.

Actually, the game is very hades-like, set in a cyberpunkish timeline. Art, music, gameplay, characters are all interesting, but... well, the game is 6hrs long.
Maybe 7? 10 if you replay it? Like, it is really short.
Probably best to grab it heavily discounted, it is worth it, but it really feels like a prologue if anything.

B U T
The edgy atmosphere, story, dialogues, characters, that MESMERIZING small open-world area that the game offers, some artistic choices, and most noticeably, that absolute BEAUTY of an OST. This game's OST is one of my favourite albums of all time, featuring Sidewalks and Skeletons, and Zamilska. It fits the game perfectly. These are the reasons why I actually recommend this game and find it worth playing at least once if you are a fan of the Cyberpunk genre.

Summary:
A chaotic and fast paced isometric shooter hack-n-slash that plays like a mix of Hotline Miami and Hades topped off with a kickass soundtrack and amazing art style. Set in a dystopian cyperpunk world, there are lots of interesting world elements in the game however the story is quite generic and falls flat, combined with a level design that is very similar all the way throughout. The game is painfully short and has some difficult portions however it is very easy to restart when you die as well as new game+ being introduced. Her/10
I'd recommend this game to anyone who is after a quick paced hack-n-slash shooter that has a variety of weapons and skills, and doesn't mind some challenge.
Pros:
- Pleasing art style and character art
- Banging soundtrack
- Fun and fast paced combat
- Interesting cyberpunk world elements
- Nice variety of weapons, skills and bosses
Cons:
- Generic story that falls a bit flat
- Weapon balance issues, some of them are simply used as fodder for the weapon grinder
- Sometimes gets too chaotic leading to dieing to something you weren't aware of or losing where you're aiming
- Levels tend to feel the samey with the factory style backdrop
- Too short of a game, I completed it in 4½ hours on Normal (NG+ is available though)

Think Hotline Miami with a hint of Super Hot spice.
You have Ruiner. And it slaps hard.
The music is great, the visuals are stunning, the story is simple to follow and the combat is easy to learn, but hard to master.
It's just a great game to pick up. And at the time of writing this review, it's currently on sale for £2.99!
So to whosoever reads this, BUY IT!

This is not the Dark Souls of isometric shooters - I could make it through that. No, this is more on the level of the original Ghosts and Goblins, or maybe Battletoads when it comes to soul-crushing, unforgiving, amphetamine-speed difficulty.
If you want to be punished repeatedly and beg for more, well - this might be the bullet-slinging, laser-blasting, rocket-dodging cyber-dystopia for you.

The controls are not as tight as I would like them, and is my only real complaint. The dash doesn't feel exactly right to me, but it is not too bad. My biggest complaint is the key binds for mouse and keyboard. On controller your left shoulder button is melee, and your right shoulder is ranged. On mouse/keyboard you have to use scroll wheel to switch between melee and ranged, and left click activates. PLEASE make it to where you can bind a button to ranged, and a button to melee. Having to frantically scroll wheel in a game like this to make a split second attack is awful.
The gameplay overall is solid, and it is a lot of fun having to puzzle together where to spend your skills to overcome the obstacles. Well done!

-Ruiner is an isometric shooter set in a dystopian cyberpunk future fueled by brutality and bloodshed. I loved playing this, and this is hands down my favorite cyperpunk game that I've ever played. As violent and chaotic as it is, it is also a beautiful, fluid top down shooter w/ an insane soundtrack.
What's Good:
-The visuals and art design are on point. There is a clear attention to detail here. The character models are stunning, the environments are filled w/ detail, and the city that you explore in between levels is a really great addition to the game. The isometric point of view works perfectly for this game and I'm glad to see that more games devs are using it.
-This is a fast, fluid, polished, well designed machine. You will be surrounded at every turn so the controls are extremely important and movement feels really good. These are well designed mechanics that are difficult to learn but extremely rewarding to master.
-Fantastic soundtrack! I would personally put it up there w/ other great Devolver games such as the Hotline Miami series and Katana Zero when it comes to the soundtrack. It's phenomenal here, and there are a ton of different beats. Sound effects, hit impact, and when things slow down and speed up all sound great.
-Tons of visually stunning bosses that also very challenging. There are so many bosses! Every boss is unique and offers a different challenge. You will sometimes face extremely fast ninja-like bosses and other times you'll have giant robots that can send a laser beam that covers a quarter of the screen, it's wild. These bosses will always be accompanied by hordes of enemies, so it will always be a challenge.
-Excellent difficulty curve and very high skill ceiling. This game is no joke and will probably be very intimidating to less experienced players, but it's worth the effort. There are so many different options in combat for defending yourself offensively or defensively, and it will take several hours to master all of these mechanics. You will start to feel like a badass death machine near the end though, it's worth the hard work for sure.
-I love that there are so many upgrades and that even after you complete the game, you still won't have upgraded everything. This give more room for creativity in playstyles but also gives more replayability. I plan to replay the whole game very soon, b/c I can't wait to try out some of the other upgrades I wasn't able to try.
-Cool city that you can explore in between levels that also offers another game mode. I believe it's an unlimited arcade style mode, but not 100%. There are also plenty of npcs to talk to, and a few secrets here and there.
Could Use a Few Changes:
-This game does look amazing, but I do wish there was a little more variety in the setting and colors. You will stroll through a lot of factories and warehouses, and most of the colors are dark shades or red, black and grey. I would love to see a sequel that has a bit more visual variety.
-Very challenging in the beginning and I can see players turning away w/i the first hour if they are new to the genre. This is not only a tough game but there are a lot of buttons b/c of how many upgrades you have. This is the downside to having so many different weapons/upgrades is that you needs keys for all of them. It took me some time to get used to everything.
-Pacing is a little weird, and I never really was sure when I was getting near the end of the game. This is partly b/c the environment looks very similar form start to finish and some of the story is a bit confusing.
Thoughts:
-I was blown away by Ruiner! When it comes to Devolver, Ruiner is usually an afterthought. The Hotline Miami and Shadow Warrior series are deeply loved and recently we've seen the success of Ape Out, My Friend Pedro, and Katana Zero. So, these are towering standards to live up to, so I can see how Ruiner gets overlooked, but that's a shame b/c this game is incredibly good. I have no problem putting Ruiner in that tier of games, it's that good imo.
Consensus:
-Excellent Game (Tier 2 and makes up 25% of my reviews). If you are a Devolver Digital fan or like fast paced badass hack n slash shooters, then Ruiner is the perfect game for you!

say this is a really good game overall. This is mainly due
to how detailed the story line is and personally how much
I love the aesthetic in it. I also loved the character art/drawings
that would pop up during conversations throughout the game.
The soundtrack of the game is also really nice and adds to the
mood of the game. Although I would also suggest this game to
who likes fast paced cyberpunk action based games.

It's designed as an ultra fast paced twinstick shooter so you better use a controller, if you are very confortable aiming with a stick you'll probably be fine, I wish your character turned with movement when youre not aiming with the right stick but whatever.
For me though, I prefer using M+K for games that require aiming in any capacity (I'm terrible at controllers), and thats where this game falls down for me, WSAD doesnt really makes you move in the up, down, left and right directions, but instead, diagonally, kinda trying to fit the isometric view of the game, this is fine while navegating towns but makes combat unbearable, I always end up dodging in the wrong direction and runing into a granade or something.
I thought there might be an option to change the directions but nope.
I gave it a chance thinking I could get used to it but It never happened, precise control and tight imputs are mandatory for a game like this, and having such a disconnect between what I press and what happens on the screen just ruins (heh) the whole thing for me.

Story:
You play as a man nicknamed Puppy. After being hacked by a hacker known as Wizard, he is on route to kill The Boss, a man that runs the Heaven corporation that runs the city of Rengkok. After arriving Puppy is hacked by another hacker only know as Her and she explains that he was hacked by a group that also kidnapped his brother, so you set out to rescue him.
The story of Ruiner is okay at best and mediocre at worst. The writing overall is decent and there's plenty of plot of twists along the way, but the story overall felt kind of mediocre. The ending especially comes out of left field and really just feels anti-climactic and more of a cliffhanger for a sequel instead of wrapping up the main story. It's really underwhelming.
Graphics:
The art style of Ruiner is honestly one of the biggest things I love about this game. Since it's heavily inspired by the Cyberpunk genre, it has a lot of really cool looking environments and character portraits that perfectly showcase the futuristic setting of the game.
I especially enjoy the character designs, as they are all really weird looking and there's some truly unique designs that verge on the line of stupidity. I especially love the design of Puppy himself and his helmet that has a visor which showcases all different types of imagery. It's honestly a very simplistic, yet effective design, which works well considering Puppy is a mute.
Audio:
The music of Ruiner is absolutely amazing and provides some great background noise when you're rampaging through hordes of enemies. It's a great techno synth infused soundtrack that has some truly amazing music, that I sometimes go back and listen to.
The other sound effects are alright for the most part, everything sounds crisp and it's fun to use weaponry to mow down enemies sounds incredibly satisfying, the only thing I wish was different is the katana noise being more meaty, since it sounds like a stick instead of a sword.
Gameplay:
I've seen Ruiner often compared to Hotline Miami, just with a cyberpunk theme and I honestly semi-agree with this statement. It's a top down shooter, where you're basic goal is to go through arenas killing everyone that gets in your way and sometimes fight a boss.
There's plenty of different weapons at your disposal, like a sword, machine gun, flamethrowers and other types of gun and all of them are fun to use to dispose of your enemies, but some weapons are much better than others, which will make you quickly forget about the other types of weapons, which you will only resort to using when there's no other option for you to use.
Puppy has a few abilities to help you in combat like a dash move, which helps you move around fast and avoid damage from enemies which is incredibly useful, but sometimes I feel like even when I dash away, I can't avoid taking damage for whatever reason. There's plenty of cool ways you can spice up combat, like hacking enemies and making them fight for you, but honestly I always found it fun to just take the enemies head on by myself.
The one big problem I have with the gameplay is the boss fights, which I think are overall not very good and end up being much more tedious than fun. Theses bosses are often incredibly tanky and have a lot of stuff going on in the background so it becomes quite the pain to keep up with all the action. Most of them look incredibly cool, but sadly they're not fun to fight.
Verdict:
Ruiner is a really fun game and honestly if you like the Cyberpunk genre and don't mind top down shooters, I highly suggest checking this game out. It's nothing incredibly special and it won't blow your mind, but it's still a great game to check out if you want to mow down bad guys in a cyberpunk setting.
Final Rating:
7.5/10
Pros:
+ Great setting
+ Fun gamepaly
+ Really good soundtrack
Cons:
- Boss fights suck
- Story is incredibly underwhelming

Then the second half of the game came in.
Suddenly enemies were tanky and three shotting me despite my best efforts. Suddenly the bosses were nothing more than massive health and energy drains as i try desperately to evade and kill them. The ending was pathetically anti-climactic, cliche, and overall stupid, and the writing felt as if they just threw things at a wall till they stuck - as if they just gave up midway and compiled a bunch of bullshit together and prayed. All in all, I'm disappointed. Don't get it - especially if you're expecting hotline miami gameplay.

beyond gameplay, i can't overstate how beyond sublime the art direction and execution for this game is — it's an incredibly gorgeous and well-achieved setting, with the characters, the environment, the music and the overall feel functioning perfectly and on-point, swallowing you whole for the entire ride. the entire world feels carefully constructed and tailor-made, and the result is an experience the artists really deserve big praise for. and, albeit i've seen some saying they felt the story was somewhat lackluster, i personally thought it was really good, making me latch onto it and draw every possible mental line i could as i advanced, a feeling not unlike reading a solid thriller or mystery novel. the foundations for top-tier worldbuilding and lore are also there, which makes me really excited for REIKON GAMES' next title, whether it's directly related to RUINER or not.
all in all, get it. imo it's definitely worth its price and vastly underrated; can't believe it didn't receive more attention back on release but it really deserves it. thanks, REIKON!
also, bit of a sidenote — i'm pretty confident you don't really learn how to play this game until you beat trafficking using only the base melee weapon. and i don't mean trafficking, i mean trafficking. that trafficking. that was a serious pain.

Sonic journey
Stylish visual storytelling
Picked this little gem up on the May 2018 Humble Bundle. Though just now got around it, I gotta say, this game deserved way more respect than I originally gave. Being the middle-aged, moody gamer that I am, twin-sticks isn't typically my thing. Aiming and missing (due to lack of personal skill proficiency) early on made me want to close the game out about as soon as I'd started. However, Ruiner had a subtle power, one which held my interest through a particularly precarious teeter. The combination of dirty electronic tones meshed with filthy, bloody violence in a world of few words - showing far more than it told - a very vivid and familiar cyberpunk tale. By the end I had become Death, drunk off the drug that is music, laughing wildly as bodies flew (forever away) from my slow motion TAS blasts. I loved it.

Ruiner is a cyberpunk top down shooter hack & slash with an average story but very good and fast paced gameplay.
It feels like a mix of DOOM, Diablo and a bit of Dark Souls (lots of good boss fights).
I played and finished it at the highest difficulty (hard) and I must say it's quite a challenge, I died alooot of times before learning the boss fights.
Q. Why the DOOM comparison?
A. It has a HUGE variety of weapons, both melee and ranged (some badass weapons at the end game) and it also has glory kills.
Q. Why the Diablo comparison?
A. It's top down and it has talent points which you can respec at any point in the game for free
Q. Why the Dark Souls comparison?
A. As I mentioned above, the game has lots of unique bosses, some of them are really challenging (some in particular took me well over 15 tries to beat)
So if what I said above strikes your fancy, I suggest you wait for a sale and buy it because it's fun and challenging (a bit short though).

This game is a treat for people that like good twin stick shooters and it utilized a variety of weapons which drop from enemies. Same with the melee weapons. But I got to say the hit boxes are sometimes wonky and died like an idiot.
The design is up in my alley. I really enjoyed and loved it. There aren't that many games that have that feel of dark and cold future atmosphere. That little City Hub reminded me of Dragonfall. Wish there was more you could do there and talk more with people.
Music itself adds a pleasant feel to the gloomy cold future atmosphere. Expected some lame electro soundtracks but this is not the case. Got an eargasm from the voice in the city Hub. At the end in the game, I instantly knew that was Susumu Hirasawa. Such an eminent composer wish his music would be more used in our media.
This game surprised me by a lot. Expected not a lot from the beginning and thought the game was overly expensive, so I waited. Presently realized after the play through that I should've bitten the bullet and bought it at full price. Thankfully the Developers are working on a new project and without a doubt I'll snatch the game without waiting for a discount.
I don't get the “If it's too short it's not worth the money” complaint.
Excellent game I give it my recommendation.
...... Nods.

Genre: Twin Stick Shooter
The Good:
+ Love the cyberpunk aesthetics,
+ Different skills that can be upgraded based on play style
+ Combat is fun and fast. This is a typical twin stick shooter, you have melee, and ranged. Enemies drop weapons which you can use for a limited time. There is a very impressive amount of different melee and ranged weapons to choose from.
+new game plus lets you carry over all your skills and changes enemy types, harder enemies, new weapons that can only be found in this mode.
+Speedrun mode and arena mode for those looking for a challenge.
+ Great soundtrack
The Average:
+/- This game was built around a controller. Although you can play with a K/M, this is one of those rare games where a controller is much more intuitive.
+/- Story is decent but feels more like an after thought
+/- Very linear level design, no real exploration.
+/- A short game, the entire thing can be beaten around 3 hours.
The Bad:
- Some technical glitches
Conclusion:
Really enjoyed my time with the game but I felt that it missed its potential.

Pros:
Great Graphics
Pretty good story
Very well drawn and stylised art
Fast paced and enjoyable gameplay
Incredible soundtrack, including a track from Sumusu Hirasawa (the creator of the 1997 Berserk soundtrack)
Everything mentioned above creates a constant oppressive and depressing atmosphere that fits the cyberpunk setting perfectly
Cons:
Some of the powers aren't really needed, on the flip side the slow down time power is kinda OP
The ending doesn't quite scratch that itch
Pretty short, I beat it in 4 hours

No less that I am what I'd consider an oldschool gamer, my default were video games that crushed one's synapses with pure speed and reflex-taxing mechanics. Think Robotron and the like -- this game oozes the welcome velocity, style and complimentary colour theory (I'm an urban photographer) that defines the essence of the best video games where score and human endurance matter; where players became gods of the 'hood for the mere act of overflowing score buffers, reflexes trained to Level Android.
The sound design owns, adding to the kinetic nature of the Ruiner and friends. Ruiner faithfully represents the low life and high tech sort of world that would appeal to any William Gibson or Neal Stephenson fan. Fancy industrial music or Detroit techno? Enjoy good quality science fiction like Ghost in the Shell? Then this game is probably up your proverbial dark alley.
Hey buddy, spare a few creds? Let the Ruiner welcome you into a land of red lights and plenty of beatdowns. You won't be disappointed.
A fresh five stars from me.

Not Bad, Puppy
What RUINER offers is fast paced, adrenaline filled action as you slaughter hordes of enemies using a variety of creative weaponry in detailed and satisfying reddish-hued cyberpunk environments. All the while, a hardcore synth-wave like soundtrack is playing in the background as you dash around slicing thugs into gory pieces and annihilating cyborgs with plasma weapons. The whole gameplay loop of RUINER is very satisfying... it gave me the same sort of feelings DOOM 2016 did at points.
Looking back on my playthrough, the game was somewhat repetitive and formulaic. But here's the thing: it didn't feel repetitive and dull at the time. Especially not dull. And it was just the right length; it certainly did not overstay its welcome.
RUINER did a great job of actually being a fun gaming experience, the highlight being the combat and gameplay (where the use of a controller is a must, in my opinion).
Not Quite S+
The plot and characters simply serve to move the action forward so you don't just feel like you're playing in arena mode the entire time.
Don't go in expecting an in-depth story with tons of lore and character development when it comes to this game. Hopefully you didn't buy it for that. But I wouldn't be complaining if this game also shined in those areas and explored some themes in depth without being overbearing. I feel like they could've done a lot more with this setting they created which is dripping with life and possibilities.
The ending felt rushed and somewhat unsatisfying.
The boss battles, while fun, could've used more creativity. It felt like I was fighting slightly different looking forms of the same boss or mini-boss most of the time.
But, Overall
I highly recommend playing this game. Above all, it's a ton of adrenaline pumping, rage channeling, fun.
And the soundtrack is on another level entirely. Seriously. Buy the soundtrack too and feel like you're hacking into an android main frame in the heat of battle when you're actually just writing some boilerplate code for work.

this game is eye candy a mix of hotline miami and bladerunner! Music is memorable and fantastic gameplay is explosive and brutal , it has a lot of replayability because of the skill tree which you can change every skill on the fly even during combat making one of the most flexible gameplay experiences!!
Story is classic consept of rescue mission with a big twist at the end of the game!!!
I can get enough of the atmosphere this game has it just one of those games which you want to experience them again and again the only thing i feel unfulfilled is that the story is kind of short and i would love to explore more of this dystopian world!!!

Personally I really liked the Rengkok hub area, which gave the game some overarching connectedness instead of just rushing through levels killing anything that moves. The pacing and length of the campaign were nice too. Not too long, not too short.
The skillpoint system allows for quite different builds, most of which are completely viable to play with even on the highest difficulty. Speaking of difficulty, the game starts off mildly challenging and can become balls to the walls hard during bossfights on the hardest two difficulties. If you are easily frustrated by dying, this is definitely not for you.
Storywise this is nothing really interesting, but the cyberpunk setting and art design made this an unique experience, adding to the positive experience of the well fleshed out gameplay.
Do recommend to any and all fans of the genre.

The music is soo good I still listen to it.
Didn't play it very long, but the memories are as strong any good game I played. I bet there is a very interesting adventure underneath the aestetics. The arcade part is similar to other devolver titles, but not so engaging to me. Try it.

Ruiner is a mixture of Hotline Miami and Doom 2016 covered in a cyberpunk theme. However, the title can’t exactly be reduced down to a one-sentence simplification as it merely draws influences from those other titles, as most games do, in order to create something special which it definitely succeeds in doing. The title starts out strong in the gameplay department and has an excellent core gameplay loop as the top down shooting and slashing feel excellent, particularly with how epic the executions feel to perform. While the gameplay continues to feel great due to the added variety offered by the upgrade system, it does tend to feel a bit weak late game due to a small handful of rather lacking and samey-feeling bosses. Despite this, everything else, including art, music, and story, remain top-notch from beginning to end. Specifically, the nightmarish cyberpunk in-game aesthetic combined with spot-on character artwork, in conjunction with the eerie and intense soundtrack, make for a gripping game that is artistically amazing to experience and play.
