... when I started playing Resident Evil.
I've had the game in my library for a while and never touched it. I bought RE 2 and 3 on sale once, but then returned them straight away because they are 3rd person games and the mods don't work well enough for the 1st person in my opinion. Yes, I know, with this point of view, I miss out on brilliant games, but that could change now because such a game is definitely playable from a 3rd person point of view. Actually, I assumed that RE was a Doom-like game, only with zombies and stuff.
Yes, I was wrong about that. Absolutely.
I've enjoyed the game so much so far, and I was surprised that it is less slaughtered and yet a lot more survival horror than anything else. But then I often got scared or winced.
The game just couldn't let go of me, so I played down the story with the first of the possible endings in 7 hours in a row.
After all, during this time I have already collected all the collectibles such as Mr. Everywhere, Coins, Tapes and Files, so that I can now go to the 2nd end, the Speedrun and the Madhouse Difficulty with the missing coins and of course the DLCs.
I can really recommend the game and will definitely do the other parts and especially Village.
My Pros and Cons:
✅ Great and detailed levels
✅ Lots of disgusting details
✅ Great mix of exploration, puzzles and fighting
✅ Video sequences
✅ Well done entry
✅ Right in the middle through the first-person perspective
✅ Exciting decisions
✅ Additional level of difficulty and goodies after playing through
❌ The last third of the game is omitted
❌ Sometimes unclear boss fights
❌ Sometimes extremely strong FPS drops

Trotzdem gutes Spiel!

PROS:
- Classic Resident Evil gameplay, this is a true survival horror (item boxes, safe rooms, limited saves, limited inventory and scarce ammunition are back baby!).
- A tribute to the horror genre (theme song like a Silent Hill game, Outlast's atmosphere, camera perspective
and gore, evil little girl like Alma from F.E.A.R, The Texas Chainsaw massacre-like setting...)
- There are quality-of-life additions to the classic mechanics.
- The extra content is varied and has something for every type of player, so, you're definitely going to like at least some of it. Story DLCs might not be as good as the main game but they're still creative and fun.
- Gorgeus graphics and great sound.
- Scariest Resident Evil game EVER hands down, it's not even close.
CONS:
- The last part of the main game is not as good as what came before, let's say some... people disappear too soon and nobody worthy take their place. More enemy variety would have helped.
- The main character's reactions are not believable.
- Another character, Zoe, really needs more character development, and the DLC named after her, although fun and creative, doesn't do anything important with her either.
- The aforementioned lack of character development is the main reason why a choice we have to make is ultimately dumb and shallow.

This is the first game of the Resident evil reboot series.they have gone third person(TPS) to first person shooter(FPS) . Biohazard ☣ is the scariest game in the series. way scarier than outlast ????????.Music is so cool ????. capcom changed Resident evil games, survival horror to shooter games back in the last two games (5,6). but they brought it back to RE7 with more improvements. I loved every single detail of the game.Graphics, atmosphere, Sound design, voice acting, villains and puzzles are so good and terrifying. The details are insane. when you open and close a door, you ll feel like you are actually in a haunted house.A masterpiece of its own kind.

You play Ethan Winters, who suddenly receives word from his long lost wife Mia that she is alive and needs his help. This brings Ethan to a dilapidated house somewhere in an Alabamian bayou. If that house looks a bit like a haunted house, that's because it kinda is. Ethan is a typical everyman, or at least a typical American Deep South everyman, judging by his skill with firearms. Unlike previous Resident Evil protagonists he is not a professional, nor related to previous protagonists, nor particularly much of a character anyway. He is just a random guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is a deliberate choice. The game goes for a more intimate, a more personal experience. In a similar vein, the game plays this time in first person. This enhances immersion further, while making Ethan feel even more like a vessel than a character.
The game takes a much more low key approach to the biowarfare element of the series. The primary opponents, the Baker family, are full-fledged characters rather that mindless zombies. Initially at least, there is nary a hint of anything biological there. Instead the game plays more like a paranormal horror story, as if what you are facing is supernatural. For the longest part the big bad is little more than a ghost. In fact, there is a drastic change in style as a whole from the classic trilogy. Gone are the opulent mansions and police precincts, gone the shiny underground labs and colourful city streets. This is a grimy swampland, dominated by rot and decay. The Bakers seem stuck in the 80s with old school TVs and cabled phones. Only the son of the family, Lucas, resident tech-junkie and Batman supervillain wannabe, has a mobile phone.
Granted, the atmosphere of the game is truly incredible. All these factors help create a powerful experience. Throughout your journey around the Baker estate, the atmosphere will cow you into submission and force you to think twice before rushing to the next area. The game plays great too. Combat can be fun and intense, though the random mooks do feel a bit limited. Black sludge guy, or black arachno guy being the only real flavours. The game encourages exploration and taking things slow. There is a ton of hidden items all over the map, items that can really make the difference between survival and many frustrating deaths, so keep your eyes open. It helps to appreciate the location design that much more. There isn't too much replayability, but the game does have a fair amount of interesting DLC, which flesh out the story some more.
This was hailed as return to form, it's not really. In fact, it completes the break from the core of the series that Resident Evil 4 initiated. Don't get me wrong. This is an excellent action/survival-horror game. It's simply not a Resident Evil game. As someone who has been with the series from the start, I think I am entitled to say that. If anything it feels more like a Silent Hill game. For the true Resident Evil experience I recommend the remake of the first game. For a modernised, but still recognizable entry, the remake of the second game. But if you just want to play a good survival-horror game, then you won't go wrong with this one.

It was so scary I kept having to take breaks. It reminded me of how afraid of things I was when I was a child.
Can't recommend it enough if you like horror, exploring haunted environments, blowing the heads off of moldy monsters, and solving escape rooms and puzzles
The characters are so vicious and creepy, I felt like I was right there within this nightmare being hunted by them

Resident Evil + Survival Horror + Jack's craziness + Joe's fists = Resident Evil 7.
Jack is the essence of RE7, he is badass and crazy af, damn boy I enjoyed every moment being chased by Jack.
End of Zoe DLC is better than the hole game IMO, Joe's fists = One Punch Man.

JOE BAKER IS A GOD
Bruh, Joe Baker ain't playing. Leme tell you something. Wait for a sale like the one that just passed, get this game, and get the End of Zoe DLC. The Not A Hero DLC is free. Play everything in order. It's a great game with a great story and really great cast of characters. You're gonna like the eventual plot twists and turns. I wasn't sure I'd get into the first person mode but it's good so don't worry about it (and I'm not even a fan of first person to begin with).
To be honest, the game's not that scary. It has its moments for sure, but if you played RE2 Remake, this is nothing compared to that. Mr. X alone is scarier than the entirety of this game. If you scare easily though, maybe it'll match the hype. The 2 DLCs I mentioned are good and expand the story directly so be sure to get them. They're kinda pricey so I wouldn't recommend them unless they're on sale, but don't play the game and not play them. You'll be doing yourself a major disservice. Joe Baker is the truth lmao.

Let me explain, I'm a guest in this mansion, I'm trapped. Those people running the place can be scarier than any monsters I could imagine, reacting to sound and sight they try to find me but I hide, and when they do find me, I run. Encounters are few but intense.
I've explored this area quite a bit and found some things that I could use as weapons, keys that unlock doors, and health related items. All of those things are easy to manage in my inventory. Exploration of the areas is intriguing but some rooms appear to not be normal. What is happening with this place? I do have more of a horrific story to tell you, but the experience was enough for my lifetime. Oh and the gruesome things that I have seen, I would consider it too much for most people. I beg you, don't try and find me, for your safety I highly recommend it.

The game takes its time to engage the player, inviting him to explore the environment, walk the halls of the house, look for items and read documents. This atmosphere of mystery remains for a good part of the game and makes you go through all parts of the scene in search of any clue. Therefore, more than ever, it will be necessary to read each piece of paper and turn over each one of the photographs scattered around the house to be surprised by the development of all events. Something already presented in the title demos, items like cassette recordings give a different touch to the narrative of the title and creatively fulfill the objective of enriching the plot. Searching for and finding items is also easier with the new first-person perspective. It is worth remembering that the game has some collectibles, which are so well hidden that, in many cases, you will have to look both up and down until you find them. Thus the story of Resident Evil 7 is told, treating its environment as if it were a character.
This first-person view also remains an excellent option for the game's combat system. It is easier to aim at certain points of your enemies or even to strike more precisely. As someone who is more used and comfortable with using a joystick rather than keyboard and mouse, it's a far easier mechanic to adapt to than a third-person approach. However, running away from your opponents is more chaotic, especially in a chase, where you have to look for where to run while still worrying about the opponents behind you.
In the graphic part, the game delivers satisfactory results in general, despite one or another texture in low resolution in some moments, in my searches, in the classic sizes of Playstation 4 and Xbox 1. However, the dynamic lighting of the environments fulfills its service with praise, creating shadows and the atmosphere to create the right degree of danger and make the player always nervous. The characters also bring distressing realism. It is hard not to feel disgusted by the insanity of the family or the hideous forms of certain creatures. Other elements of the scenery also cause various reactions, such as insects walking around walls (or even your body), or the blood that spurts from your limbs after a violent blow.
All in all, Resident Evil 7 shows the world that it is possible to give a great start to established franchises. The game makes you face your fears in the most challenging way possible, in claustrophobic and dimly lit scenarios, watered with a good dose of horror and suspense, whose perfect look helps to recreate all the terrifying climate. Resident Evil 7 is the gift that loyal fans have been waiting for for so long, and I'd gladly suggest and recommend it with contentment in my face to any horror venturer that is craving for a good 6 hours of distressing experience.

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard
Introduction
Whenever someone mentions “Resident Evil”, it reminds me of Zombies due to the movies. But Resident Evil 7 doesn’t actually feature zombies. Capcom took a serious risk while making this game completely different from the previous titles in this franchise. The usual third-person perspective has been replaced with a fresh & well-implemented First-Person perspective. This not only adds to the fear factor but also makes the game a bit more realistic.

The game takes place immediately after Resident Evil 6. You play as Ethan Winters who receives a video mail from his presumably dead wife, Mia. He is drawn to a derelict plantation in Dulvey, Louisiana by this video in search of his wife. Will he be able to save his wife from the horrors & challenges that await him?
Gameplay
I haven’t played a lot of Horror games but Resident Evil 7 was a completely different experience. The game makes you expect something but it doesn’t happen. It has the ability to make you brace yourself for moments when nothing would happen but throw scares when you least expect it. The perfect formula for a horror game. There’s always this eerie feeling that lingers around you due to the multiple elements of surprise present in this game. There several moments which made me jump off my seat. I swear this game gave me too many heart attacks.
The basic movements are perfectly okay. But you can’t jump! But the key meant for jumping is bound to blocking. Blocking is very vital during fights as it minimizes the damage you take which can otherwise be fatal.
Moving onto weaponry. There are a total of 17 weapons in Resident Evil 7, out of which 6 are Melee weapons (including the Chainsaw & Circular Saw), 1 is a bomb (Remote Bomb to be exact) then the rest are Guns (including the Grenade Launcher & the Burner). The weapon mechanics are on point. The recoil is fucked but it makes sense as the character you are playing as is overwhelmed with fear & is fighting for their dear life. The worst thing is that the enemies are literally bullet sponges. Ammunition is scarce but one enemy can eat a whole magazine.
Apart from scaring you & pushing you into a corner, the game also tests you with a series of puzzles. To be honest, the puzzles aren’t that hard to solve as the solutions are right in front of you. The Light Shape Puzzle thingies were the ones that annoyed me the most as it took a while to get the right shape.
Items, ranging from medical supplies to ammunition, are very rare to come by. They give you the ability to craft items to compensate for this. You can find the necessary materials then combine them to get the desired item. This is very useful as you run out of Medkits & ammunition very fast. Inventory management is vital as you have limited inv space. You need to carry the items that you think might come in handy.
Almost every decision you take will haunt you later. For instance, in the fight against Jack Baker, you have three options: Empty your handgun on him, try killing him with your knife or just flee. Each of these options has a huge drawback that will bite your back later on. There’s one thing you need to remember in this game, death is only temporary. You will understand what I mean once you play the game.
The one thing I did not like about this game is the doors. You will never know what to expect behind a door. Firstly, when you open the door, it doesn’t open fully. You have to push it open after opening it a bit. This adds to my anxiety & scares me. On top of that, after you enter a room, the door automatically shuts. I have no clue why they did this. It just makes the game harder as escaping from some enemy will be a pain.
Graphics & Audios
Graphically, the game is as realistic as a 2017 game can get. They nailed the eerie & disgusting surroundings. The disgusting parts almost made me barf. This game stands as a prime example of how a horror game should be like. The details they added are wonderful. Everything is detailed, even non-interactable objects. Graphically, this game is perfect.
Sounds play a vital role in a horror game. The right soundtracks set the desired mood. RE7 was excellent in choosing the perfect sounds & also the placements of the sounds. Sometimes, the build-up sound plays but nothing happens. This is a clever way to trick the player to expect something but give them nothing. A perfectly executed tactic for a horror game.
Pros
- A prime example of how Horror Games should be. It instills actual fear in the players.
- The graphics is as realistic as it can get for a 2017 game. They set the perfect mood to scare the players.
- The game loves playing with you with a lot of unexpected surprise elements.
- A perfectly woven storyline.
Cons
- The puzzles aren’t much of a challenge. Could’ve made it a teeny bit harder to crack.
- Ammo is a bit too scarce in my opinion. I always ran out of bullets.
Conclusion
If you really want to get scared off your chair, then you’ve got the right game. RE7 has a lot of content to offer accompanied by a perfectly blended horror experience. The scariest game I have played so far. I recommend grabbing it on sales. The DLCs, I do not recommend getting them as they come with a heavy price tag.

I haven't played any horror games for a while, last time was RE6 and both Outlast games on Nintendo Switch (for anyone who are scared try play it on a busy subway lol).
RE7 is definitely a good one I enjoyed every second, first person RE game is all I can ask for.
RE7 has good story, rich maps, understandable puzzles, twisted monsters and some mild jump scares. Indeed this game contains a lot of scary moments, violence, blood, crazy moment, unexpected plots... but they also have a good sense of humor and when it comes to moments like
They cut off Ethan's arm then put it back
I find it less scary. But beyond everything I am astonished by the ideas of the supernatural power- like the developer has really took efforts read weird things and made them into a game.
For me, the most difficult time is not how to save ammo (I play normal difficulty), but
to save Mia or Zoe
. I like choice matter games and this story is solid and satisfying.
I also love the DLC: Not a Hero. It is surprisingly wonderful and well developed, the story follows the main,
play as Chris to kill Lucas- who is more like a doomed major villain,
I shall get the season pass when it is on sale, hopefully to have it on this year's summer sale. :)

Now that aside for a moment, the story is very- hmm... fucked to say the least. I'm not one for spoilers but if you played or will play the game even from the start you'll realise what am I talking about, not to mention the end (tho I only know the 2nd ending, but I can just guess the the 1st ending isn't much more better).
In conclusion if you haven't played Resident Evil 7 yet, or you come from RE2 (as I did) and you like horror stuff even just a little, I'm pretty sure you'll love this game!

Aside from a few weak sections and unispired enemies design the game is fun, intriguing and it takes you to a lot of places also builds into the Umbrella/Resident Evil world.
Game is a bit short but the different scenaries and characters and back stories make it feel a lot longer
jumpscares guaranteed.

The general atmosphere of the game is excellent with some horrific and tense encounters but I would have loved if the game was a bit longer and the last level, without mentioning any spoilers, was straight forward and boring, feels kind of rushed and not related or similar in quality of puzzles to what we played in the previous levels. The 2 added DLC after the story ends ties two lose ends of the main game and offer new gameplay ideas.
Overall, it's a good game and recommended for Resident Evil fans and all horror fans in general

PROS
- Truly astonishing Japanese interpretation of Louisiana. The bizarre mix of low, middle, and upper class sensibilities is just nuts and deeply relevant to the story in a low-key way. As an American life long fan of Resident Evil, this set of mansions is awe inspiring.
- Incredible DLC and so underrated. You get so many options - story heavy mini campaigns, rogue lite challenge modes, and even poker, though as a non-fan of poker I'll never get that achievement...
- Interesting characters. The Baker family is so good.
- Gameplay yada yada yada it's Resident Evil it's great.
CONS
- The introduction and a sequence closer to the end drag on repeat playthroughs. Totally worth it and a non factor for people who plan to do a single run.
- Some odd animation sync issues that persisted for me across multiple playthroughs on 2 platforms (PS4 and PC)
- The molded are cool enemies but this game could have used 2 more variations.
I know this game confuses people. Fools! It's near perfect!

This had the classic Resident Evil style of finding key items and solving puzzles along the way with a modern take on it and the controls were great, I also liked the story a lot more, less zombies in favor of something that felt new.
Overall, I think I prefer the first person experience here more than the third person in the previous games and I am looking forward to Resident Evil VIII a lot more now.

Genre: First Person Survival Horror
The Good:
+ The game oozes atmosphere in every possible way. Every location, setting, area is well detailed and looks amazing. The production values are very impressive.
+ I applaud Capcom for taking Re7 back to its traditional horror roots. Compared to the last few entries in the series, this game focuses almost entirely on exploration and stealth over action. Re7 feels slower paced and more methodical (at least in the first half of the game). Re7 seems to be closer to Re1 in terms of pacing, design and structure.
+ Manage your ammo and inventory space wisely, often times you have to make tough decisions in what to keep or what to get rid of.
+ Hard mode changes items around, adds new enemies in unsuspecting places, and adds a few more additions providing a good reason to replay this difficulty.
+ I recommend the season pass as it adds a lot of great content. The content ranges from additional story levels, puzzles, mini games, survival mode etc.
+ Great boss battles and characters
+ Does not require any previous knowledge of other RE games so newcomers won’t feel lost.
The Average:
+/- I know RE games were never about the story but I find it weird that the main character goes through some of the most horrific life changing events in the first 1 hour of the game and it barely elicits any emotions from him. He’s just like ‘welp, I guess this is my life now…got to keep moving’. Capcom could have included a few more lines of dialogue to show the distress the character is feeling.
+/- In previous RE games when you used keys and no longer had use for them, they automatically disappeared from your inventory, this game doesn’t do that anymore. Minor gripe.
+/- I found the lass boss battle to be very easy and anti-climatic compared to other games in the series.
+/- Later half of the game feels more rushed compared to the first half. The game focuses more on action and areas are not as interesting to explore.
Conclusion:
If you love to explore, solve puzzles in a haunting atmosphere, then I can think of no better game than this.

What I loved:
I have played a lot of horror games and this is one of the few that managed to startle me at times. It manages to do a great job at making you feel trapped with a bunch of family members out for your blood just like real life. The move to first-person may annoy some people but boy does it work amazingly with the type of gameplay and atmosphere present in RE7 as it goes back to Resident Evil's roots of being a true horror survival game. Also, the characters and the story are very well written, which is something previous few RE games have struggled with.
What I didn't like:
Close to the actual end of the game, you will be asked to make a choice. Now my gripe isn't with the fact that you are expected to make an RPG-esque decision in an RE game, or the fact that
Zoe
ending is pointless af for
Zoe
; No. My gripe is that regardless of the choice you make, you will follow the exact same gameplay sequence and be forced to play through the weakest part of the game
(The Abandoned Ship)
in both endings, just because Capcom wasn't ballsy enough to deprive players of exposition if they made the alternate choice(bad ending).
As for why I am not a fan of this segment? It's because this is the part where RE7 turns from a horror-survival game into an arcade zombie shooter. The creepy atmosphere, the mystery of exploration and the sense of vulnerability is given up in favour of arena styled linear level designs where you go forward mowing down Infected with your SMG and explosives as if you are a descendant of freakin John Wick and Doom Slayer. Fortunately though, this part is quite short ranging from 1-2 hours depending on your speed but you will have to go through it twice to get both endings(and the difference is nothing more than a different cutscene).
Even with that minor issue I have with this game, it doesn't stop it from being one of the best horror game I have ever played. Really Excited for RE VIII ????

TL;DR: RE7 is a good game. It's not incredibly great, but it's good.
The visual style of the game is great, with incredibly detailed environments, a fresh look into a not-usually-explored setting, and good animations for everything too. The faces can be somewhat uncanny valley material, but this IS a horror game, so that actually fits. The hair, on the other hand, just never looks good, regardless of graphics settings. The first problem this game has is also related to this: the settings are apparently a little broken and you need cards released after the game to be able to play it with some settings on High. Still, pretty much everything looks fine even with some stuff on Medium, aside from one scene right at the very end where a bunch of blocks kills immersion.
I've talked animations, but the voice acting in this game is also pretty good for a videogame. It's cheesy, for sure, but Resident Evil knows what it's doing, and wears its heart on its sleeve. Jack and Lucas' actors are particularly good in this regard, with really good performances anytime they show up.
As a horror, RE7 manages to have a creepy atmosphere at several points (though it does fade away with you getting more and more used to the game's tells), has disgusting visuals at several other points (whether that's scary or not is up for debate), and does have the occasional monster-jumps-in-your-face moment to startle you, but those are few, and often used well. The monsters themselves, including bosses, on the other hand, are the opposite of scary, several times looking almost comedic. Horrifying, still, but in a comedic sense. RE knows it goes over the top here and there, and it's not afraid to lean on that, which I respect, but a huge face with 10 eyes as weak points in front of me gets me to giggle instead of making me afraid.
As a shooter, it's mostly competent. You're not supposed to be guns blazing, and the game gives you enough resources that if you manage well you can be extremely safe through the whole playthrough, but you'll still have moments with a shortage of ammo or health. This sometimes makes the bosses in particular feel too long. There's some weapon variety, but I found the Burner in particular to be extremely underwhelming, being useful for exactly two enemies, and never again.
As an exploration/puzzle game, I loved it. Scouring through these maps and figuring out the madman's way of locking off areas of the house in order to make intruders unable to get anywhere, and even going through some pretty wildly weird and video-gamey puzzles was fun. It's never too ridiculous, and the story has a perfectly acceptable fallback in Lucas' particular case of psychosis, which leans us into the story.
The story is mostly fine. The game sort of presents backstory by giving you tapes that people have filmed on some sort of portable cam recorder (that are fire proof, still produce a tape even after it's been dumped in water, and well, produces a tape to begin with) which doesn't really work a lot of the time, but that's a gimmick that can be forgiven. The actual story of Mia and the Bakers itself is passable, and figuring out the mystery of why everything's going to hell is fun, but it's nothing remarkable in any sense. What makes it specially disappointing is that at one point in the game you're given a choice of ending, but one of the choices is just... wrong. So much so that the game just invalidates your choice entirely not one minute after and all you get is one more unexciting boss fight. It feels cheap, and the choice is before the final chapter of the game, so if you want to get that achievement you're forced to play that whole segment again, for no additional look into the story or characters whatsoever.
I don't know if RE7 is a good Resident Evil game having not played others, but it sure as hell is a good game. Its bad parts are either easy to forgive or just annoying for achievement collection/completionists, it's competent in all regards with a maybe not on story at most, and definitely gets you immersed in this weird swamp house and its crazy meat family.

RE7 is unlike the previous 3 main games of the series again more horror focused.
You are Ethan Winters, your wife Mia was missing until you received a sign from her, an e-mail asking you to come find her at the Baker ranch in Dulvey, Louisiana. After arriving it will not take long and you will find Mia and Jack Baker will welcome you to the family but this is where the nightmare begins...
Unlike the previous main Resident Evil games, Resident Evil 7 is played in first person view.
The graphics are pretty good.
The sounds and music deliver a perfect atmosphere.
Unfortunetly the PC version does not feature VR support, VR is officialy only on PS4.
Overall, RE7 is a great game and finally the series goes back to its horror roots.
Sounds 10/10
Graphics 10/10
Gameplay 10/10
Atmosphere 10/10

As I played Resident Evil 7, I thought one thing, this is effective horror. Those words have been in my head almost the entire time of Resident Evil 7, and I’ve considered doing a video on what I mean. Essentially there are only 7 enemies I’d count in Resident Evil 7. Maybe that’s why it’s called Resident Evil 7. The thing is, those are all the major enemies including all the bosses, but those 7 enemies are so skilled at harassing the player that they become better than what you expect.
Resident Evil 7 made me impressed by how well it does horror and how you don’t need horrific monsters or scenes to drive home this horror. Spending the majority of the game low on ammo made the game feel intense without relying on constant combat. Resident Evil 7 focuses on the deeply unsettling nature of a situation that a player doesn’t want to be in.
I’d give Resident Evil 7 a top score. If you like Horror, you’re going to enjoy this, and if you’re like me and avoid the genre, this might be your exception also. I already have the Resident Evil 2 Remake, I’ll probably also play Resident Evil 3 before long as well, and if they drop Resident Evil 4 as a remake, why not. Resident Evil is a great horror action franchise , but as we know, it’s just had a few missteps in the past. 5 and 6.

At Length - Resident Evil 7 is a text book example of doing everything in a survival horror game correctly. It creates a genuinely disturbing atmosphere that it thrusts the player in only to force them to confront demented psychopaths and terrors in the middle of the night before assaulting their sanity and sense of perception. But like the earlier games in the series, and unlike many of the First-Person horror game imitators that came later, it keeps the strategic resource management elements and slow build of character progression (through stronger weapons and more ammo) to eventually empower the player so that they're allowed to confront the evils they encounter in order to overcome that fear and relieve the tension it builds in a very satisfying way.
I genuinely felt the tension and got effectively creeped out playing this game, which is the highest compliment you can really give a horror game. The tale of the Baker Family and their madness hits a lot of emotions, even -surprisingly- notes of tragedy, sadness and regret. I was expecting a family of Leatherfaces but got one of Lisa Trevors instead.
But there's one real caveat here; at least when it comes to the main game you need to do this all quickly. The game really works best on your first play through, done in one or maybe two sittings in the middle of the night with the volume up. It's totally feasible and how I experienced it. It's important because once you spend enough time getting acclimated to the monsters and the mechanics just like every RE that came before it, the effect of unnerved caution you'll feel will fade and you're going to be playing a Spookum Shooter yet again. Only this time it's an FPS rather than in 3rd Person.
Luckily, by the time that occurs there's a bunch of DLC to play through which takes advantage of this acclimation effect to give you remixes and reinventions of the main gameplay. As well as 2 short follow-up chapters to the main game, one FreeLC, one Paid DLC. All of the additional content is good, but it's a question of whether or not it will be worth the price to you, and that'll depend on how much the main game captures your imagination.
I think for those that don't like this game, it will be because they take too long through the main game or come in with too much information after playing a lot of the demo or watching stuff online. If you get acclimated to the horror effect too soon, the last half of this game becomes a bit of a slog and you're not going to want to finish it, let alone try out anything post-game.
But it all worked for me and I'm immensely impressed that the crew at Capcom found a way to reinvent the wheel yet again for this franchise so late in it. Hopefully the intent, if not the exact implementation, of RE 7 will be the mold they follow for successive numbered follow-ups for a while, and they keep the Horror strong in the series like they did here.
