Rebel Galaxy is a third person ship-combat/Space sim set in the frontier of space. The final frontier if you will.
You play as you. After getting a message from your aunt Juno as well as one of her old ships, you set out to meet her only to end up in a wacky set of scenarios that may or may not lead to inter galactic war.
The game is practically Sid Meier's Pirates meets Star Control. And if you don't like either of those.
What's wrong with you?
Unlike, uh, most modern space games, Rebel Galaxy's ship movement and combat takes place entirely on a 2d plain. Except for gunships, bombers, and fighters because they didn't read the tutorial. The draw of Rebel Galaxy's combat is that it's basically High-Seas ship combat. But in Space.
So the opposite of high-seas.
What you gotta do is roll up on someone, maneuver into range, and then broadside them like that one scene from Master and Commander. Supporting your big-ass cannons are secondary and even tertiary weapons ranging anywhere from particle cannons to missile launchers to that gun that never hit anything from the Pearl Harbor movie.
Outside of the main quest, Rebel Galaxy fancies itself a space simulator. You spend a lot of time warping from place to place, and I do mean a lot of time, so much time that I started doing other stuff while traveling from station to station of mission to mission. I can't really complain about that, space is big, and it would be weird if you just had loading screens from area to area. You do have to use jump gates to get from sector to sector, but that's kind of a given.
At space stations you can take on missions, read the news, talk to a barkeeper, and stay up to date with the market and trading. Its nothing hyper complicated, but its just deep enough that you can exploit the market like a good capitalist. Profiting off the suffering of others by selling them water in the times of famine.
Or orchestrating their suffering by selling them Spin Doctors CDs.
You start out with a ship called the Hammerhead, a cute little thing that I would probably live in if given the chance. From there you collect credits to buy yourself larger, angrier, hornier ships. While low to mid-tier ship combat can be exciting, firing 15 broadside cannons at once is the closest I've ever come to meeting god.
The story and universe is. Well it's there. There really isn't all that much info you can go off, there is no Codex that I know of and the lore and history of the part of the universe you're in is pretty lack luster. If there's some in depth bible I don't know about, someone could probably share it with me.
You have an assortment of factions to pick a fight with. The pirates such as the Red Devils, the local law and military known as the Militia. Korians, who are fat idiot aliens. Greels who are skinny idiot aliens, and the Mua-...Mar...Mor...Martha's who are space bears.
There's also this religious group called the Lightforged. They sound like a Dungeons and Dragons race but they're actually just space popes with space ships.
I don't know what their religion is actually about.
None of these are your friends. You can sometimes talk to them at space stations and even hire mercenary pilots who come in alien flavors. But for the most part they'll either try to rob you, kill you, or both.
Talking to other characters take place in first person scenes where 3d models of whoever you're talking to talks to you with template animations. They're sort of basic but they remind me of something from Masters of Orion or Fallout so I like them.
Other than that, what else did I like?
Sometimes you get stuck into really big space battles. I don't think they're planned unless they're missions because sometimes reinforcements will just warp in at random, sometimes for minutes at a time. They're cool but unless you're really packing heat or playing smart you'll probably get mulched.
I like how an NPC ally ship killed the super boss at the end for me, that was funny. He didn't even take a scratch.
You can also upload your own music to Rebel Galaxy and listen to it in game. A practice I haven't seen done since Raw 2 on the Xbox.
Wait no, I think GTAV did it as well.
What else. Uhhh.... No I think that's it. Look, I only knew this game existed because I saw it for 10 dollars on the PS4 at Wal-Mart back in, like, 2016. It took me a while to get around to playing it to completion, but I'm happy I finally did.
Its not going to blow your mind, Its not the most in depth space game, you're not going in for Freelancer or something like that. But its still a good time. There's another game in the series called Outlaw, but I heard that's more like a dog fighter game than a capitol ship combat game.
Rebel Galaxy was a good time, I'll probably come back to it sometime in the future, if not just to blow up more Korians.
Rebel Galaxy gets 7 made up alien languages out of 10.

-the music is fantastic and you can upload your own soundtrack if you want.
-the quests are mostly simple and ship to ship broadsides are as exciting as you think they are
-you can find equipment from destroyed ships (that cannot be bought in the store) and equip them to your current ship and most of the time they are better than what you buy
if you dont want combat there is a fairly simple economy where you can become a merchant, buy and sell merchandise across the galaxy and make goo money that way. as well as exploring and mining resources that can be very profitable.
when you sell your ships you always break even and you can always buy them back (if you are in the correct faction stations) without losing any money
CONS: can be a little grindy with side missions when youre trying to get better weapons, upgrades, etc. or ships.
-the mining lazer is a total spaz sometimes trying to target asteroids, as well as only having a range of like 2 meters(or whatever its supposed to be)
-the tractor beam range is sadly tiny
-the mercenaries you hire are pretty weak up until mid game, check out some guides to see which are the toughest otherwise they will die pretty quickly.
going to warp speed/lightspeed is a little tedious especially when trying to jump out of an asteroid/junk field. sometimes it will have an alert for a collision warning even though you are clearly going to miss whatever it is the AI complaining about.
-there is an option to use singular turrets, broadsides (the main weapon of the entire game) missile launcher, mining laser but I only ever used the broadsides and mining laser. the turrets auto aim and fire so idk why you would need those options. especially when there are a dozen ship and fighters swarming you. I always focused on the larger ships first and the auto turrets took care of the fighters.
all in all Id give this game 9/10 for replay value, fun, music, and experience. there are several different play styles available and this is a fun offline game that isnt too stressful. I hope other people will enjoy this as much as I did. its been out for awhile but the pricetag is worth it.

The missions you can do are also quite repetitive and fall into 3-4 types most of the time. Even trading commodities is a pain, in order to check where to buy cheap and sell for a profit.
Cant recommend this game, although I really wanted to have fun with it.

The whole space thing is actually flat. You cant really move up and down here, but smaller fighterships can. The battlemechanics are a bit like playing a navy battle, but with spaceships. (I hope that makes sense).
There are many ways to play it, robbing freighters, trade, doing missions for different factions and such.
Overall it feels a bit like Firefly.

The game is fun to play, using a planar approach to space flight/combat (no Y axis for flight). More like boat to boat combat in a pirate game. Get your high damage side guns lined up and BOOM.
Lots of ships to choose from, for different styles of play (quick combat, slow frigate combat, trade ships with a gazillion turrets, etc.)
The choice of music soundtrack for the game really keeps the mood going. Excellent tunes.
Love it.

Combat has the much higher focus of the two.
- It's fun for a short while, but when you realise that the combat is 'naval-style' - that is, with broadsides, every engagement becomes 'get within broadside range and pummel ship until dead'. Rinse and repeat until no enemies remain. This loses its charm very quickly.
- The broadsides themselves are quite disappointing. They feature a charge mechanic, where while holding down the fire button your weapon gains accuracy. Sounds fun, right? Maybe you could hold to target some weak spot on your enemies' ships? Nope. As long as you fully charge the shot and aim it in the rough direction of your enemy, you'll shoot accurately (100% accuracy for beams, in fact. Even if your charged shot doesn't align on the enemy exactly). There are no weak points on enemies so every fight is pretty much a slugfest.
- The weapons are horribly balanced. The beam weapons are superior to every other weapon, regardless of apparent DPS, for the simple reason that they hit with 100% accuracy. I don't know why you'd use anything else.
- You are stuck on a 2D plane but enemies are not (within reason). You'll have to be constantly looking up and down to track fighters above you if you want to kill them yourself instead of leaving them to your autofiring turrets.
Trade is there but doesn't have the same polish as combat. I suspect it's meant to be more of an activity you do in-between fights and missions as you go from one station to the next.
- You only know commodities' prices as of the last time you visit a particular station (unless you happen upon a rare event). This makes it quite frustrating to keep track of trade opportunities, as your info will constantly be going out of date.
- This wouldn't even be that bad if you could look at station locations and their known prices when buying from the market, but no. If you select a commodity, the price at nearby stations will be displayed, one at a time, changing every two seconds or so. Very. Slowly. You also have to back out of the station dock entirely to check the system map. It's painful to use.
The warping mechanic is terrible. Firstly, you have to be a certain distance away from objects (and even further from enemies) to initiate warp. Then you have to hold a button, and then you're off. You can be taken out of warp by getting even slightly close to another ship or object, and you'll have to repeat this process again to get where you're going. Warp also slows down massively when near any objects of interest. As a result, actually trying to efficiently get somewhere is a pain.
As for other aspects of the game, they're pretty meh aside from the graphics which are admittedly pretty good. Soundtrack must have only 5 or so songs. I'd suggest muting the music entirely and playing some other playlist in the background. Plot is your standard sci-fi fare, nothing groundbreaking or exciting. The first big surprise doesn't really give you any benefits either, other than some basic +stat upgrades. Some new feature would have been welcome.
This isn't a bad game, just not a very exciting one. Will hold your interest for a few hours, perhaps. Get it on sale or in a bundle if you're desperate for space games.

Looking for a space trucking simulator with pirate battles and amazing graphics? This is a game for you.
This game is pretty worth the price but if you really want a wild space adventure then you'll be disappointed by meticulous grinding. It is fun for a few hours but at a certain point you start looking at the mining and trading features and feel like you're playing the game wrong. Trust me, play it like a trucking game with space pirates and you will have infinitely more fun.

I enjoyed my time making numbers go up. I enjoyed the soothing twang of the hardblues and the exhilarating feeling of the warp drive kicking in at the right moment in the groove. I even enjoyed the tempo of driving real' slowly away from the space station so you can turn on your warp drive, and the way that gravity seems to distort your warp capability in a way you slowly develop a feel for, like you're learning to pilot a spaceship. I have the sense that the code behind the commodities market is really elegant and complex.
It is fun for ten to fifteen hours every few years, and I applaud it for that.

Decent graphics, you've got an x and a y axis to run about, you tend to run small errands to make cash to buy a better ship so you can run more errands for more cash to buy a better ship...and yet, it still makes me smile when I play it.
Maybe it's the music, maybe it's bobbing around the edges of civilized space doing jobs, but there's just something satisfying to me about bouncing around a simple Space Western.
Also, while the combat's fairly simple, different ships have different broadside positions (Weapons being Turrets, Secondaries, and Broadside), which adds a little variety to things, and there's just something -satisfying- about rolling up into a fight with some pirates in your hard earned heavy frigate, tearing them apart with turrets, then blowing them outta the void with a well-placed broadside.
I'd recommend checking it out if you can find it on sale, definitely. It's a fun little time waster.

The storyline is not bad, but it is on rails. All you do is fly around saving up for the next better ship. The ship designs are nice, the flight controls are half bad, and the music is decent even though it is repetitive, but I lost interest rather rapidly.
Fly here, fight these guys, return to collect your reward, rinse and repeat. For a time killer, this is not a bad game. If they made it Coop it would be a great game. Solo only is kind of Meh and thus the review.

No Pitching or climbing up or down, so it feels like a Space Trucking game when it comes to controls.
Simple enough to be relaxing. Challenging enough to be fun and engaging.
If you are looking for a more elite, or dangerous, 6DOF, in-cockpit, Space Sim experience, there are other titles that provide that.
There is something soothing about playing this game. And it does a good job in the visual department. It is an environment that is enjoyable to be in, and doesn't disappoint with immersive effects. The environment is fun to interact with, and I personally find mining to be meditative and calming.

LIVE THE SPACE SMUGGLING DREAM OF FUN, FAST PACED BROADSIDE CANNON COMBAT, OR DO WHAT I DID AND RAM THEM FUCKING PIRATES WITH A CARGO RIG WITH MAXED SHIELDS
It's been a hot minute since I actually played the game, around 8 months(?) about, but I have fond memories of it. In fact, I wanted more of the game after I finished, so I even got 100% of the achievements.
GAMEPLAY: What's the gameplay? The general gameplay loop is simply you accruing enough credits for upgrading your ship, which in turn will let you move on with story missions that get progressively tougher and togher. I remember being able to go hard on missions with a relatively weak ship, farther than I think I was supposed to go, until I finally hit the roadblock of punching up 3 weight classes on multiple ships. The game feels rewarding if you play good, or more-so, play smart. Afterwards, I resorted to smuggling narcotics and illegal weapons past militia roadblocks and pirate raids for massive profit. Even though I focused a lot on the smuggling aspect, using cargo ships that have less combat capabilities, I still felt like a force to be reckoned with when I was able to out-maneuver the AI. I eventually upgraded to a combat rig, but still one fast enough for ramming speed, and became the bane of pirate king spawns.
Sorry, rambling there. Gameplay is an 8/10 for me, to give it an arbitrary number. I can feel it getting repetitive to others,l but there is a decent amount of variety in missions found on the quest board, as well as with the Mercenary faction and the Merchant's faction.
GRAPHICS - 7/10 Nothing really to write home about. The backgrounds are pretty, along with the planets you see. It never felt very stale for me, and I didn't notice many graphical bugs or inconsistencies. Overall, it's pretty solid. I want to mention the alien designs here, while there aren't an insane number of them, each one does look well modeled, and unique in design.
MUSIC - 9/10 The music really got me into the right mood for smuggling, pirate hunting, and space combat in general. There's a lot of blues rock and country rock in the soundtrack, fading in and out depending on the situation that you're in, but the songs hit really good. The sting when you warp into an enemy, for the song to drop at the perfect time when you start to engage others, it fits really well. The choice and implementation was really well done on this end.
Story - 5/10 - Probably the weakest part of the game, and I say this because I've actually forgotten a lot of what happened. I remember the general premise and everything, and could probably recall the rest if I tried, but overall it was a pretty mediocre storyline. I feel this game would have been better if the story had more branching paths rather than one set destination for campaign missions.
Uh...What else is there to games??? Technical side, I suppose. There isn't much I can say here, I never really ran into any game-breaking bugs or anything that slowed down my game. It felt pretty good to play, and I had gotten consistent fps throughout playing. There's only one thing I can recall that may have caused lag, and that would be fights involving several dreadnaught-class ships, not to mention all of the corvettes and frigates that were also in the fight. Loadscreens were very short, and most of the transitions were seamless between docking, reloading, and galaxy-hopping.
Overall, I think it's a good experience to jump into. On sale, it's 3 bucks, which is definitely a worthwhile price point. It definitely has it's shortcomings as well, and I hope they eventually return to this game's framework for a sequel . There's something good here, and if it had more refinement, a story that changes with how you want to play, and more content, then it would have been a masterpiece. Despite that, it's still a very solid game for what it is.

However, some details that would give the game depth are missing. There are about four voice actors, used over and over. There are four mercenaries that simply repopulate when they get killed. There are about 20 goods that can be ferried around and sold, but no story for any of them (oooh, an alien artifact; I wonder what I can do with it; oh; just sell it). No crafting. Your character doesn't level up, so the only upgrade decisions you make are about your ship. There are a lot of missions, but all are randomly generated except for the main quest, and none lead to further quests. So all the side missions are single quests with no story.
The space battles happen on a plane (ie, 2d surface). You can move around on the x and y axis, but have no access to the z axis. So if your enemy flies above or below you (yes, the ai has access to the z axis) then you can't target them for a moment. The combat is very similar to the ship battles on Assassins Creed Black Flag, or Odyssey, which are fun even if they are a bit repetitive.
So...lack of depth. It could have been more, but that's not the game they were interested in making. Nevertheless, I had fun blowing ships up and upgrading my space destroyer. So thumbs up.

+Good looking graphics and designs
+Good music
+Ship customization
+A wingman
+Multiple locations
+Combat is fun
+A market system
Cons:
-Repetitive missions
-A lot of cloned individuals
-Scaling sucks
-Space? (No Y Axis)
-Lack of story
You get to upgrade your ships, buy new ones, upgrade weapons and utilize components. You can name your ship but you’re stuck with what they give you in terms of someone giving you a ship. You can make your weaponry attack harder, have more shields, have certain components that help in your daily life (e.g. Tractor Beam), and customize your ship in terms for combat and mining needs.
The combat is fun and I’d say think compare it to ships in water with bombardment and torpedoes. You can shift between the weaponry in combat; you can set it to automatically fire or manual fire, or even have specific selections on what the weapons can do. You also get a wingman that helps you on missions, escorts you around, and helps kill the smaller space crafts that love to float all around you – the bigger your craft is the harder at time it can be to attack smaller crafts.
Because of the issue it being on the X Axis only, you have to spin to win at times and with smaller craft it becomes a headache. So with the wingman it helps you fight off the smaller guys with you having your focal point on the bigger ships. Now, with that in mind it makes it harder for you to dodge a lot of the missiles because you’re on one level. There is no Ace piloting here. Everyone enjoys the same space-floor movement. It wasn’t a huge disappointment, but being fully maneuverable wouldn’t hurt either.
Now, there is a lot of cloning, repetitive missions, and staleness to this title. Every bar looks the same, the bartender looks the same, the enemies look the same, and the quests are the same just with a stronger risk level attached behind it. This also made the story very unappealing and lackluster. I didn’t remember anyone, I didn’t really care, and it just felt empty. With a game with so many systems and planets, I mean there is a story in here, but the effort wasn’t there compared to other aspects of the title. Yes, you join a guild and do guild quests which reward you with ships and components at a cheaper rate, but it didn’t make it more appealing.
Graphics, sounds, designs of ships, and the universe itself were amazing. I must say this was an amazing game to look at while playing. I didn’t experience any crashes, lag, or anything else out of nature when playing this game.
There is a market system in the game where it’ll go up or down similar to Dow Jones and you’ll see where goods are sold or bought at a better price. The mining portion of the game was very lackluster and wasn’t really awarding. It was better to just do quests.
I think my biggest issue was the massive amounts of repetitiveness in this game that has led me to move on. I know other games have them too, but doing the same three exact quests over and over in the same system is boring. I believe if they added more variations in their quests and then threw in random number generator, I think it would be amazing. Another problem was the scaling of the missions. You’d go from moderate to getting your butt kicked within a few seconds. I think some balance in this game wouldn’t hurt either.
It’s not a bad game and I’ll probably come back to this further down the line. If you’re looking for a space game that has combat similar to ships (in water) and enjoy space with customization, then I’d say give this title a shot! 7/10 - Recommend.

There are a lot of reasons to love this game. It's extremely immersive, the controls are satisfying once you get used to them and adjust mouse settings and everything, and it's really fun varying the build of your ship to handle different situations (or to adjust to your playstyle, whether merchanting or mercenary). It even runs perfect on Intel HD 3000 with 2.4 Ghz core duo, which is saying a lot as these are LOW specs (granted, had to disable many of the beautification features, but the game still looks amazing).
HOWEVER, there is a huge flaw with this game, and I personally see no excuse for it because it can be fixed.
All Escort missions are absolutely broken. The A.I. will spend more than 30 minutes going in the opposite direction of its destination. Instead of the A.I. following your ship, the game forces you to follow the A.I.'s ship. The fact that the A.I. fails at navigating absolutely destroys immersion. Worst of all, one of the major questlines requires Escort mission - the Cofax questline's FIRST quest! Even if it's a side quest and not necessary for story progression, I can't get rid of it in my Mission Log, so it's a major questline to me due to my OCD and completionist behavior in video games. This causes major stress for me, rather than allowing me to relax which is the reason I play games in the first place.
Now, I had nonstop fun with this game for 20.5 hours, but this bug is game-breaking for me. I don't want to progress to the next system without completing the Cofax mission and I wasted 2 hours attempting it today with no success.
I asked the devs to please fix this bug. They MUST have money for it from all of their sales from Rebel Galaxy as well as their Epic Games launch for Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. I even told them HOW to fix the bug with 2 distinct methods (one in this review, i.e. making A.I. follow you instead of the other way around, and one in the Discussion thread I created before leaving this review).
So, I see no excuse for such a persistent bug (5 years!?).
If I had a company and my devs and I were literally incapable of fixing a bug like this, I would outsource it and bring in a coder temporarily whose job is JUST to fix that bug, even if it costed 100 sales. It's worth it to retain the players and to enjoy long-term sales (as well as avoiding reviews such as this one).
This game could be a masterpiece, but it falls flat on its face due to a singular outstanding bug.
While I do recommend the game simply because 20 bucks for 20 hours of entertainment outweighs the price of a movie ticket nowadays, PLEASE be wary when purchasing this due to the bug mentioned above. If you have OCD like me, you're going to end up wanting to pull your hair out, because Escort missions also pay more than other types of missions and it is detrimental to the immersion and overall game experience to have to ignore them (and to have to ignore major questline(s)).
I'll adjust this review if the devs care to fix this bug.
Hopefully they will see some sense and fix it before launching Rebel Galaxy Outlaw on Steam on/after August 13th, 2020.

Gameplay is simple and non-RPG setting makes it easy to learn and play.
If you are looking for a space cowboy experience and game with a free world this is one to try.
There are several downsides about that game:
- Music. There are not a lot of soundtracks, but you can easily add you own music to different situations (in-station, combat, etc.). And it's plain and simple.
- Final system. Not a spoiler. There is an isolated system in the game - Charon. This system as we are told is populated by Virax race and they use instant jump gate tech to travel to the nearest system. Also they tell us, that no one else visited this Charon system. So what do you expect? That when you travel in this system you'll see all planets populated by Virax and everybody is hostile to you. What do you get. System populated by same factions as every other system... That totally doesn't make sense.

I will say like all games this game isn't gonna be for everyone. When it comes to the game you can't come in with the mindset that you will be piloting the millennium falcon or something like that. You are piloting a big naval ship in space. Combat is a bit slow compared to other space games but still very rewarding. Also while I do see the game having a decently high skill ceiling the skill floor is low enough for a player like me to still be able to get through things without being destroyed every 5 seconds. Also from what I have gathered while you still need to upgrade things like shields, hull, and weapons it treats upgrading your ship more as a side grade rather than an outright upgrade which I honestly like cause I don't feel forced into just getting the bigger ships just to progress. Heck, some people seem to actively discourage such cause of loss of speed and maneuverability. It is rare for a game to go that route I feel.
The more southern US feel might be a put off for some and normally it would for me but I find here it gives the game some charm. Got a space western thing going on. Also if I get tired of the music I can just find my own to use with custom soundtracks so thank you Devs for that option too.
TL;DR - Early impressions are very good. Nice space western naval combat game with an alright story. Just wish you could paint your ship a different colour in this game.

Like Freelancer, the main point that separates this from games like the X series is that gameplay is pretty much action/arcade style. You don't even move in the 3rd axis, your space ship moves more or less like well... an actual ship. You can attach missiles, turrets and other means of attack on your ship, but your main attack is basically a barrage of shots you unleash from the sides, making most battles feel like a classic 17th century naval skirmish. It can feel a bit restrictive at first, but given you start with a pretty massive ship and not a small fighter it kinda makes sense that you wouldn't be able to perform barrel rolls and flashy acrobatics even in space. Still battles can be really exciting with ships attacking you from every direction and you having to choose targets to destroy first, managing your deflector shields (you can active those at will and they will block most if not all attacks for as long as you have charge), and turning your ship towards the side where your main shields are still active and can protect the hull integrity from actual damage (lose a side and your ship is destroyed even if every other part of it is completely intact).
Battles can be chaotic and dangerous especially at first when your spaceship is weak and fragile. Even later when you get enough upgrades to handle multiple enemies at once, it is advisable to hire a mercenary to ride along with you. Pick a good one and you will see interactions with enemies go much better for you.
Other than that, it plays more or less like your typical space sim. You go from station to station, learn trade secrets like what station needs what kind of goods, pick up a few bounties or missions from various factions (doing missions for them raises their respect to you but can make other factions hostile), raise money get better stuff for your ship, maybe buy a bigger craft when you are wealthy enough and after all that if you get bored you can continue the main story (personally, 9 hours into the game I barely advanced the plot).
Is Rebel Galaxy the best space sim out there? Probably not, but it is one of the most approachable ones out there, right next to Freelancer. Would I put it over that game? Not sure. But at this low price, with this much content and solid mechanics Rebel Galaxy is still a great choice for those looking for a open space/sandbox experience.

There are a few things that are pretty annoying: getting knocked out of warp by one medium-sized asteroid floating in the wrong place, escort missions where the AI can't figure out how to get you into position behind your ward, mission difficulty ratings that frequently don't match up with what you're facing, to name a few. I also wish there was some way of getting info on what commodities a station stocks short of going and looking.
For a while I've wanted something that was like Elite Dangerous, but a little more arcade-y, and this does a great job of scratching that itch. Fly around, trade stuff, blow up pirates. For a game with a budget this size, it punches above its weight.
