TL:DR
Can’t recommend the game in current state with the recent changes (v.0.14.01).
In current state, you might have fun couple of the first runs you do. If you keep playing till Nightmare 9(current hardest difficulty) you slowly start to realize that there are only few truly viable builds that you need to high roll into. If you don’t want to play on the higher difficulties, you’re more than free to do so, and the game on the lower difficulties is fine at best.
If you’re a solo player (or even co-op really), latest update (v. 0.14.01) pretty much reduced the amount of fun massively. Unnecessary nerfs across the board to already RNG heavy gameplay. Easy fix for the time being would be reverting changes made in 0.14.01 -> use 0.14.00 version instead. The changes made to the flow of the game in the experimental build 0.14.00. were already enough.
The review itself:
Performance is alright, I haven't really run into any huge issues or have hiccups on my PC or Steam deck. In some points FPS might drop below optimal, but it is still playable.
The premise and characters are truly captivating for me and makes me want to learn more of the setting. I truly love the twists and spins they’ve made with the characters and how they’re portrayed. Visual style fits the theme (and I must give props to the artists).
The characters all have unique and fun gameplay with most of them having build defining talents. Problems start to arise once you reach “meta progression” end (currently at the time of review level 6 of character and item unlocks from certain conditions). Once you gain access to all the talents you can acquire on character the RNG of getting a “good” talent increases exponentially (also getting decent items is RNG hell sometimes). Currently if you were to have really bad luck you can for example get following talents on Aladdin: Starter Aerial catch or Wish of omnipotence, Air Dash, Healing Blades, Major Enchantment, Dive (in short 2-3 support abilities and in this example 1 damage talent), sure you can kill the stage boss with this but that will take some time and feel awful all the way there. Additionally, to bad talents you can get useless items where I’m left with the feeling of wasted time and not enjoying playing the game.
I’ve finished multiple runs with every hero on Nightmare 9 (solo and co-op) and I have to say most heroes feel great to play and can finish the run. Exception being Snow queen (even after the rework) she just doesn’t feel fun to play and needs something else than her current kit.
Addressing the timer, in my opinion the timer adds good amount of urgency in choosing your way of dealing the stage. Without the timer the game would feel even more monotone of checking every single crook and cranny to get all of the loot and levels making all encounters truly trivial without much effort ( of course standard RNG talent choices would affect this). If the devs were to remove it, please create different game mode for it.
The most fun I usually get is getting a build together and absolutely demolishing what comes your way, but this isn’t something that should or is happening often. Most of the time deal with the cards you’re dealt and finish the run or at least get to stage 2 with pretty much anything you get, just takes time.
Wishlist of features/fixes to add:
• I know the idea of the game is to deal with the cards you’re dealt as best of your ability but allow picking any of the starting talents (or at the very least allow us pick from 3 of them), some of the characters currently have (in my opinion) only few truly viable starter talents. If you don’t get one you might as well restart the run and waste good 20seconds (multiplied as many times you get same talent choices, in my case usually 4-5 times)
• Add ability of getting like 1-3 rerolls where you can choose to reroll talent picks or magical item picks. This will reduce the amount of RNG in the long run and give players more chances of making the run fun.
• Change the current stand still cast type ultimate talents (EG. Pied piper plague of rats), the game is clearly made in a way where if you stand still too long-> you are going to die 80% of the time especially in boss encounters. At least give them ability to move/strafe at slow pace while casting.
• If you want to increase the prices for certain items, please think twice of the amount and maybe just change it like half of what you were thinking. And as a suggestion if you want to increase the costs in co-op, please just increase the costs by 5-10% per player and leave the solo players out.
• I might be wrong with this, but please rework the straw house quest in stage 1 to take less space or integrate the normal loot to those locations, since to my understanding you will lose two loot spawn locations because of the straw quest.
• Please give option to start the quests in early rather than gathering every single stone/straw/wood, this would give good incentive(Risk-reward) to actually do the quests rather than clear map where you are more certain to get your times worth.
