I will NEVER buy anything published by Kalypso Media again.
I got a letter from their lawyers claiming i illegaly downloaded and distributed their newest game Deciples.
Wich i did not do, up to that point i didnt know of that games existance.
They have been doing this for over 10 years (you can look it up on google and find a lot of material on it)
So im sure that they know about it.
What a terrible way to treat your paying customers.
Falsely accusing them of piracy and fining them 2500€ (800€ out of court settlement).
I had to contact a lawyer and it was a very stressfull situation.
I hope for nothing but the worst for this company.

As for the bad things, there are several. I think the worst is the difficulty in making crossings or derivations (switches) of tracks, when duplicated. On sloping terrain, it's almost impossible. There are places where I just can't make a level crossing. I spent more time trying to assemble the tracks than playing.
Another annoying thing is the erase tool (bulldozer). It's not very accurate and there's just no way to undo a deletion by mistake.
In any scenario it is easy to have about 40 trains and several stations and it is difficult to keep track of everything. It should be easier.
If anyone asked me, I'd say no, I won't indicate the purchase of this game.

Easier way for modders to do their magic not only maps, more vehicles, more cities, industries, resources, bigger maps, stations, trips, etc.
I want this game to feel bigger and better, its fun, its good, but its not something i like to play everyday, seems to shallow.

I agree with many that the cartoon competition and what they say is just rude. I thoroughly enjoy the built-in history lesson, but I frankly just want to slap the fat whore silly. However, I do like choosing between the characters that each have pros and cons.
Finally, I don't understand the point of the maintenance station. If you build a maintenance building at every station, and the trains end up breaking down in the middle of the line anyway and don't actually pull into a maintenance station, what function does it actually serve?
The potential is there, the graphics are beautiful, and there are many good aspects of this game, but it really feels like a repeat of 20 years ago, and that version, frankly, worked better.

The Good: To start off, the campaign is used as a tutorial and tells a brief bit of history about was going on in the different time periods across the USA, in relation to railroads. After completing the campaign, there’s lots more to do via scenarios/challenges, open play with an economy, and a sandbox mode. In every game, the sounds of the trains and music keep to immersed for hours. You can even ride along on the train routes you create, which can be nice and relaxing. The main task, of designing and building railroads, is implemented very well with simple clicks and drag & drops. Also, if you make a mistake or want to make a change, you can just bulldoze for a full refund and try again. As you meet the requirements for towns/cities, they will grow in population and physically change appearance on the map. You can also have computer opponents that will build competing rail lines and try remove you from the competition.
The Bad: I found the best parts were early and mid-game. After that, the interface does not scale very well towards managing 100’s of trains/routes/towns/warehouses/staff. I often found it tedious and time consuming when discovering an area of congestion, trying to discover the exact cause, and making the small adjustments to remedy the situation. A lot of management concepts, that work great early/mid game, just break down once your empire gets so large. For example, the staff personality interaction for a train. Early on, it’s interesting trying to balance the four staff members for each train to get bonuses for the train. However, this becomes unwieldly once you get over 50+ trains, and just forget it if you ever lose a staff member, have to find out what train they were on and find a proper replacement.
Something else to keep in mind is that it looks like every map is limited in size, having a cap on the total area and towns/production places there can be. Once I finished the campaign, I wanted to play free mode across the entire USA, but found that the map was altered and many towns and farms, from the campaign, were missing and I was disappointed.
Overall: I’d Recommend this game to anyone who’s interested in managing your own train company. Even more so if you like the time period 1830-1930 and the whistle and roar of a train engine.

However, things get repetitive after a while, and scenarios feel very constricting in how you are allowed to expand your company. The DLCs are expensive compared to the base game, but do not seem to change much besides train models and environments (I did not try them all).
Summary: recommended on sale, discouraged at full price.

Stupidly easy to make money, there are barely any expenses, it's all profit. (One example is refunds on your locomotives you bought 10 years ago that are outdated! To upgrade you just pay the difference, sometimes you even get money back for updating!)
Stock market stuff is a joke, no serious effort was put into designing it.
Rivals are SOOO annoying. Turned off the volume for them, would have been better to turn off their prompts.
Constant auctions is super annoying too.
This is not a tycoon game, like RRT 1 & 2. Nor an economic sim game like Capitalism 2. This is weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee fun with trains game.

First Impressions
A game that tries to re-create the Railroad Tycoon series. Comes close enough in most areas but lacks some magic. Still on the fence about this one but will keep coming back to it to explore a bit more.
For a new player, routing busy networks can be hard, so when you start you may find it easier to switch the game difficulty from realistic to normal.
If you liked the original Railroad Tycoon series then you could try this on sale if there is a good deal with the DLC bundle.
Positive
Track building and route setup is fairly easy
Many different maps and scenarios if you buy the game in a bundle with all the (pricey) DLC.
Negative
Kalypso launcher another pointless game launcher.
Cartoon characters are used for the players and AI. I think it would have improved immersion to use more realistic historic personalities and tone to the game. Games like this can take the player back into history and that would make this game memorable, not cliché cartoon characters.
Track laying difficulties in realistic mode it can be hard to get good efficient layouts that support heavy train traffic. Cannot do a dual-track layout and all the switches between tracks have to be manually inserted. A steep learning curve here.
Financial world is basic with less scope than the RRT series. No fluctuation in interest rates and less scope to manipulate the financial market. Stock market and company shares generate no dividends as far as I can tell. Also no option to raise additional share capital.
Research tree could be better organized. You have to keep checking when you have enough points to unlock a discovery: would be better if you could choose a discovery to research next and it unlocks when enough points are available.
DLC prices there's a lot of DLC at quite high prices compared to the base game. Probably best to go for a bundle with DLC if it is heavily discounted in a sale, otherwise it's not good value for money.

As a mature gamer with a major interest in history, I'm looking for games which can offer an immersive experience in different (usually historical) settings. Years ago RT3 did a surprisingly good job of achieving this, so I was hoping this game would be a kind of sequel, in some ways it is, but in many others it really is not.
The biggest turn off for me are the (incredibly annoying) 'rivals', who have each been given 'personalities' of the most grating, stereotyped and childish kind imaginable, along with ridiculous cartoon depictions that pop up on your screen every few minutes, when you're trying to concentrate on other aspects of the game - like building rail lines. There seems to me to be a major misalignment between the other details of the game (some of which are superb and do a great job of creating period 'feel'), and these annoying, and very intrusive cartoons. They also really don't 'fit', for example in the 1830s US campaign, one of these rivals is a crude cartoon pastiche of a 1930's Al Capone mobster, complete with 1930's slang and a crummy 'Italian-American' accent!
It's as if the creators don't understand what kind of people are likely to buy this game. Mostly, I should imagine middle aged, or older people with a specific interest in trains and/or history, who want a (very) mentally challenging and atmospheric, but not necessarily fast paced game. They want detailed scenarios which can be solved using a number of different approaches, and not one where you're constantly feeling rushed into pressing the 'right' button 'on time', if they wanted action games that's what they'd buy!
Reasonable historical accuracy is also, I'm sure, important to many such gamers (I know it is to me). Luckily, I'm no train buff, but I should imagine any playing this must be constantly gritting their teeth to do so, the glaring historical (and geographical!) issues are annoying me as it is. Let's be honest, look at the name of the game, look at what it claims to portray... I'd be amazed if at least half the people buying this game AREN'T train buffs!
RT3, whilst no where near 100% accurate in any sense, seemed to get the balance of historical recreation/nostalgia and intelligent game play just right, whereas the creators of Railway Empire have got many things spot on, but missed their target on one or two, key points, which wreck the rest. It's a big shame because there must be a great many middle aged, older, as well as more serious minded younger people, who are seeking games with long term interest, combined with atmosphere and historical interest, and there is a distinct shortage of such games created.

Its better on visual level and some production to gamemodes.
Then its a decent game?
but could have a much smoother selection and information screens for the gameplay, as it's kind of a bottleneck for me to fully enjoy it. The tutorial helped a bit, the hints did not and made things worse. Still having some problems with leveling tracks and management between heights as they don't always blend well. (maybe there is a filter that helps ingame just not used it or had any need). Also a lot done in the background in the UI, which I'm not liking, to that of trains that will collide or stop for little reasons more so when the tracks become more complicated.
Really wish the UI was better, to know what you selected and sometimes have to go through multiple windows and still don't know what is selected. there is a sign option that was added at some point wich helps the railroad, but sometimes it doesn't work and doesn't say why it doesn't work nor is always helpful, also if some special tracks could solve this if not done with signals and such. Since that needs quite an improvement in my opinion or you have to play it a bit differently/workarounds.

The game encourages the use of multiple lines with signals and switches to allow trains to pass but then you have to manually specify which track each train should use, otherwise rather than waiting for a train to pass on the free line, trains will just stop entirely and never move again. This leads to either building one line per train or spending most of the game setting waypoints to control which lines to use.
If the AI could simply switch to an available line if their target one is blocked (unless told otherwise by the user) and there was an option to prioritise express trains over freight the game would be great and I would happily change my review. This is a basic feature and having to micromanage waypoints in this manner turns the game from a fun management sim to a tedious one. I can overlook the frankly weak competitor AI, difficult to manage recruitment system and unclear UI among other issues because the core gameplay is satisfying enough but this is one issue that tips the scales too far against it.

The Good:
- Good building tools which are easy to understand: not still as good as Transport Fever 2's building tools but still pretty good
- Okayish cartoon(ish) artwork: If you like cartoonish UI's and characters and other artwork, this is pretty good in that regard but for me is not visually as pleasing compared to very realistic and sharp/mature artwork which Transport Fever 2 has.
- Campaign which has storyline: Quite limited amount of storyline and campaign length compared to Transport Fever 2 but still enough for a game like this. IMO Transport Fever 2 has better HISTORICAL storyline compared to this game.
- Trains are detailed and well executed in this game: Train models and sounds are nice, but their physics are very ''arcady''. By this I mean that these train don't really have any weight to the (trains in this game accelerate super fast, they move super fast even when they are at full load, trans almost completely ignore tight turns and just continue as it was nothing). Transport Fever 2 in other hand has very good physics, where trans actually behave like in real life and trains have their own mass and payload. Turns, hills, bridges etc affect speed in Transport Fever 2 heavily. Trains in this game feel like they are some kind on model trains, which just look/sound cool. To this I also want to say that Transport Fever 2 also has awesome train modeling and sound design.
- Good tutorial system (IMO Transport Fever 2 has better tutorial than this game but Railway Empire has also pretty good tutorials for new players)
- Good research system: For me this might be one of those things this game does really well, because in Transport Fever 2 there isn't really any specific research system, but things unlock in specific year. So basically vehicle companies research and develop the vehicles for you in Transport Fever 2, but in this game you need to purchase and research things by yourself. In my opinion Transport Fever 2's vehicle purchasing system just feels more realistic but this is quite subjective question because both games do this aspect really well. Still gotta give Railway Empire some credit for this aspect.
- Voice acting is pretty nice: not as good as in Transport Fever 2 but not bad either IMO.
The Bad:
- A lot of DLC's to buy in order to enjoy this game fully: meanwhile Transport Fever 2 has NO PAID DLC's and that game feels a lot more complete than this game, plus Transport Fever 2 has more content by itself (not only trains)
- Very repetitive gameplay/scenarios/campaign: You manage trains and lines and build train infrastructure which is okay, but with these kind on managing tools this game becomes just pretty boring and tiresome at some point. Transport Fever 2 in other hand had very good variety of different gameplay mechanics where in order to be successful you had to plan your rail network quite carefully and integrate other transport to your railway system. For me Transport Fever 2 just has more polished and interesting gameplay mechanics compared to Railway Empire
- Very poor management and upgrading systems: When exploring and looking at the train routes, this is visually very awkward and frankly very poorly designed. In Transport Fever 2 it was really easy to see which routes the trains run, which lines they belong to and what they carry. Transport Fever 2 even has full, well integrated transport line list (not only trains but also other transport systems as well like buss lines and tram lines) where you can see at which point the trains run at specific line and you could see all the lines/train in one list/interface and easily manage them. In addition, Transport Fever 2 even has the ability to put colors on train lines, making it easy to see what resources are going where and which train is going on which route (in addition to this, you even have the ability to color all your vehicles on different lines in Transport Fever 2). Managing and upgrading trains in this game has been made really awkward and difficult to understand, the best way is to just upgrade all trains to the latest model which you have researched from the menu, but switching / updating individual trains is really bad compared to Transport Fever 2.
- Most of Railway Empire's content/campaign/scenarios are based on the 19th century, so if you’re more interested in things like electric trains and other modern train sets then this isn’t the game for you. Transport Fever 2 has trains/history from the early 19th century to the present day. So Railway Empire is a game that is completely focused on trains and building train tracks, but still contains less content compared to Transport Fever 2 which in addition to trains had planes, ships, trucks, buses, trams, roads and infrastructure construction etc.
- Poor UI: This game's UI is simple but lacks a lot of useful information and IMO is too simplified for a tycoon game. I think that they wanted to give this game a ''mainstream look'' which made this game seem simple and easy to understand for average people, but at the same time this game lacks a lot of UI elements and managing options Transport Fever 2 had. This UI in short is not that ''powerful'' to use when we talk about managing your stuff in-game. Transport Fever 2 had probably the best UI in a tycoon game I have ever seen but this game might have the most basic, non-deep UI system I have ever seen in a tycoon game and not in a good way. I want powerful tools which help me to manage my trains, routes, lines, infrastructure, money, tracks, company, employees ect. Also the demand-supply system in this game is badly designed and confusing, because for me it was really confusing to understand/see what resources cities actually want and what they produce from a specific resource. This was really easy to understand in Transport Fever 2 and that game gives a good amount of information about production without even opening sub-menus.
So in short this game isn't bad but for a tycoon game I really expected more than this. This game has some serious flaws which keep me from recommending this game, especially when you can just play Transport Fever 2 instead than playing this. I might sound like a real Transport Fever 2 fanboy, but my honest opinion is that Transport Fever 2 is just simply a better game than this on many different levels. If you REALLY like trans and train tycoon games then you might enjoy this game, but even for the most hardcore rail fans this game might not be even that good even in their eyes.
Not recommended.

+ Good sound and graphics.
+ Well designed track placement and terrain manipulation systems.
+ Simple. Not too micro-manage-y
+ Good number of campaigns in the base game.
+ Runs well on Linux
- Somewhat janky economy/competitors system. Easily abused.
- May be too simplified for a train sim enthusiast. This isn't TTD
Not tried any DLCs yet, but the base game is quite good on its own. Good for casual sessions.
Personally biased score : 7+/10

One of the major reasons to buy it, was Linux support, which is brought in natively.
For sure I read some of the other reviews and was aware to face some issues...but...none of them happened to me. In fact, most of the mentioned issues are actually patched away by the enthusiastic dev-team.
Another part of the negative reviews targeted for Kalypso, but I decided to watch the game and the developers instead judging a publisher for other games. And I was right.
Railway Empire is done quite well, has an insteresting storyline and offers a lot of content. First of all is a little tutorial, when you start your first mission. You'll get guided step-by-step into the business, so the overvhelming bunch of informations got chopped into suiting pieces. Regarding bad reviews or negative videos, I guess some of those folks never tried to do the tutorial, because most of their complains might have disappeared otherwise. I do not agree with them and think Railway Empire is worth a try.
For sure I did not buy full price, but there is a sale every now and then, and you get a quite polished and updated product for your enternainment. I thought about buying the complete version, but the DLC's are mostly maps...some with very few added trains and as I read, they are still showing american basic stuff, so i spared them. There is a workshop, so you could get other maps for no fee if you like to.
All in all, it is fun to play, the mechanics are well equiped and working. There is kind of a comic style, but that's influence of our time. Very rare new games do avoid comic style AI or advisors actually, so no big deal.
What I really liked was the easy building of railways, in opposition of other rail games that have that part built like a technical simulation. So I am able to concentrate on trade, on routes, on building up a business instead of doing a master for groundworks.
Recommand it? Yes, if you could grab it on a sale and like Railroad Tycoon games.

Cartoonish character designs don't completely mesh with the rest of the game's theme, but it's a minor distraction at best from the overwhelmingly strong delivering of the game's fundamentals.

All I wanted to do, was have a 2 rail track that goes straight past all stops. Then, at a town for example, both rails connect to the town, so that any train that needs to stop there, easily can, and then get back on its main track without issue.
HOWEVER. The stupid dev's of this game decided that you cannot, ever, remotely, have a track cross another track. Y'know, like an intersection. It has rail signals to support it, but it doesn't let you physically place the tracks through another.
OpenTTD, a game even older than sid's train game, with graphics and an engine like a potato, lets you do this with 0 issues.
I will come back to update this with more stupid things as I find them, but right now, this has really pissed me off.

It's not a perfect game. There are some frustrating aspects to the UI, the AI is largely train dead (on normal), the late game loses some steam, there is a bit of a learning curve that almost requires you seek outside information (if you play on realistic), and sometimes your trains make dumb decisions without your micromanagement.
That being said, creating supply chains via trains, setting up your tracks just right, and digging into the statistics of each route to make it more efficient is utterly compelling stuff (if you're into that sort of train play). If that appeals to you, this game is definitely worth your time despite the flaws. Overall, the game is pretty freight.

Few things may have been done better, e.g. sometimes for unknown reason you cannot put parallel tracks and you have to leave some space and you cannot have more than two parallel tracks right next to each other when it is a bridge or tunnel.
Delivering goods must be done directly to the city where it is needed (you may also use warehouses) but passengers and mail can switch trains in cities, it was not obvious for me at the beginning.
After you learn the mechanic of the game, most missions are too easy and it is not a challenge to finish them with president rank.
I like this type of games so I enjoyed it very much :)
It reminds me Anno a little bit.

Again, the game is fun even if you're not interested in the topic. Additionally, the devs clearly put a lot of effort into making sure that the game has the QoL improvements and balance changes to make it more enjoyable. Especially with the DLC.

In Railway Empire, you are given a map of unconnected cities and production locations such as farms, mines, or fisheries. With limited budget, you lay track and build stations, and then you buy trains and plan routes, and then watch the cash roll in. Each city will have certain goods that it demands; providing a steady supply of goods will cause the city to grow. As the cities grow, they will begin to demand greater varieties of goods and in much larger quantities. As the cities grow, they will begin to produce unique industrial goods (Paper out of wood, meat and leather out of cows, etc). If you become rich enough, you can buy up the farms and the industries to boost your profits. The game will usually pit you against AI opponents who are never much of a threat but who will annoy and harass you until you are able to buy them out. The cartoony personalities kind of break the feel of the game, so this was a bit of a misstep.
Winning usually involves hitting certain milestones, like having $X number of profits, or 75K people in at least 5 cities, or delivering 50 carloads of winter coats to a specific city.
The game does have a lot of nice touches. The different scenarios are all historically based. A TON of effort was put into modeling dozens of period appropriate engines. I really like the music in the DLCs as well. You can even ride along with your trains – a lot of effort clearly went into this feature, but it is useless from a gameplay perspective.
Laying track is a bit of a pain in the butt, and I don’t like how I cannot build stations in more than one city at once. After struggling with the switches and the crossovers I said screw it and began playing on a simple track mode, where trains can pass through each other. Also, the constantly running clock was annoying when trying to read and plan, so I enabled pause mode. There’s lots of other minor frustrations, like trying to get the game to recognize an express line.
The game works best at a small scale. Later missions, and DLC missions, become HUGE. You end up juggling 30+ cities and dozens of rural stations. Laying all the track and setting up all the supply towers becomes super tedious, and then winning becomes a matter of spamming trains and routes and then just waiting. The worst part of the game is that trains can only carry a few things at once, you can never upgrade this, so to feed late cities it seems you need 3 dozen trains just running back and forth between the city and the farm.
Like I mentioned before, the game is not a bad one! It just kind of has a way of overstaying its welcome and becoming a bit of a chore in the end. I will likely continue to dip in and out as I try to complete it over a long period of time, but I am not sure how much fun I will be having.

The classic Railroad Tycoon series is one that stands out among my early gaming memories. I remember watching my dad and uncle managing their companies long before I understood what was even happening, though I got a kick out of watching the ever-expanding railroads and the trains that traveled back and forth on them. It wasn’t too much longer that I began building some of my own before I had any right to be. The sequel, Railroad Tycoon 2, released when I was a few years older and it was at that point that I remember actually being able to put together and maintain an efficient system of rails. I even gave it another go in the last half of a decade or so as none of the other titles of the same theme seemed to be able to outdo it.
Enter Railway Empire. Within my first hour of playing it became clear that I’d stumbled across the holy grail of train management. All of the memorable elements of Railroad Tycoon were present and it wasn’t just a simple clone either, it modernized and innovated on new aspects that resulted in an even more in-depth experience.
The More Things Change…
Railway Empire carries on the tradition of Railroad Tycoon. You take on the role of the head of a budding railroad company and must find a way to turn a profit as you expand and maintain the tracks, stations, trains, and industry that you’ve acquired. Profits are made when the goods produced by industries are delivered from one of your stations to a city that demands them. This demand is determined by the size of the population and the industries present there. Each population threshold adds a new product that is demanded and each industry adds a demand for the good(s) that is consumed to manufacture its own. You’ll spend quite a bit of the early game shipping assorted agricultural products to be processed into meat and beer to support the growth of early cities.
Meeting the Growing Demand
As demand rises, you’ll have to continue to adapt to ensure that you can provide the necessary supply. Large populations require a higher quantity of their demanded resources, often requiring additional logistical measures like direct rail lines and personal warehouses to meet them. Successful industries will upgrade if they’re getting enough business which increases the number of goods they produce, though it also produces the amount they consume if they do so. A furniture factory operating at full efficiency will need a lot of lumber that is produced by sawmills which in turn need to have a steady supply of raw wood. There’s plenty of room for serious profits if you can keep up with the demands of your growing supply chain, especially if you purchase the industries that are producing the goods themselves.
To pull all of this off, you’ll need trains, lots of them. There come in a wide variety with some being specialized toward express routes while others are intended for freight delivery. Express-oriented trains tend to have a higher top speed though they often have significantly less tractive power making them slow down far more than freight-oriented engines when carrying heavy loads or dealing with elevation changes. Purchasing the right trains for the task at hand is huge, though you don’t need to micromanage what they transport unless you have a very specific goal in mind, such as an express route for only passengers and mail or a line that is specifically for delivering large quantities of apples for cider. The default setting has them pick up whatever is in supply at their current station as long as it is demanded at another station on their route. As your progress through the years, you’ll acquire increasingly fast and powerful engines that will continue to make your lines more efficient as you retire your older models.
Laying track is more complex than most other railroad sims and lines up far more closely with some of the deeper logistical sims that exist out there. Though you’re free to build as you please as long as you have the funds for it, you’ll have to factor in elevation changes, bridges, tunnels, and trains sharing the same tracks. Steep inclines can seriously hinder the speed of your locomotives, especially those with low tractive power, though tunnels are exponentially more expensive than standard tracks so you’ll have to use them sparingly until you’ve started making a stead profit. Even more importantly, trains cannot phase through each other and you’ll be closely monitoring side tracks, parallel tracks, and signals, which may come as something of a shock to those who are expecting a more casual experience.
All around the World
The base game of Railway empire focuses on the railroad development of the United States with its campaign and accompanying scenarios. I had plenty of fun with it and when I got my hand on the DLC I was pleasantly surprised by what it offered. At first I was disappointed that there weren’t any new campaigns, though the scenarios ended up not only being designed well, they’re clearly designed with a challenge in mind for those who’ve had experience with the game beforehand. I found the objectives of the original on the easy side, though each of the DLCs offered significantly more of a challenge than anything I’d come across before them. It wasn’t rare that I’d be completing a goal within six months of its deadline as opposed to always having a year plus to spare. It was a noticeable change and one that made me a much better railroad president because I had to be to achieve success.
Outside of the difficulty spike, each DLC comes with a new map and plenty of new goods to add some unique flavor to each of the new regions. It was oddly satisfying to ship cider around Great Britain and sausages around Germany and it really brought a nice touch as it required a tweaking of strategy to suit the rearranged economy. The overall mechanics of Railway Empire were left untouched, though the alternative scenarios and maps will keep fans of Railway Empire coming back for more.
Verdict
Railway Empire is the railroad company simulator that you’re looking for. I don’t know if you’re an old veteran of the genre or someone who’s curious about stepping into it for the first time, but I highly recommend this one as the one that you break out. The gameplay is solid and I found that I was still ready for another game no matter how many I’d had under my belt. The variety of options available allows even new players to adjust the difficulty and makes it possible for anyone to find success while staying challenging for those looking for something more difficult. While the DLC doesn’t add much as far as revolutionizing the gameplay mechanics, it does add a lot of content that will keep even the most addicted player occupied for quite some time. If you’ve even got the slightest interest in this title, I recommend picking it up.

This game's mechanics are really unrefined for being full release with DLC. Track laying and switching is really unintuitive and overly complicated. The interface overall is clunky, train management is tedious and time consuming. You have to select a line then manage each train individually on that line, there is no interface to assign engineers or other train staff at-a-glance. In order to alter a trains cargo or route, you have to delete the route and train and then start again, which is fun when you have 6 or more trains doing different things on the same line.
For a full release game, it crashed to desktop whenever Steam had an update. I've had Supply Towers just disappear on reload, trains delete themselves and many other little bugs. You can't build bridges more than 3 tracks wide. Switching, the switching is the by far, the most frustrating part of the game. You have to build complicated intersections to get trains to behave and tracks must be assigned a direction, even with stations that have switching enabled. That feels so counter intuitive, why even allow multi-directional switching when the trains are just going to have conflicts if the track isn't assigned a direction. I spent over an hour alone trying to get a diamond switch to work, and I'm no stranger to these kinds of games.... 75% of my library is tycoon or city building games, with thousands of hours playing.
There are hours and hours of video on Youtube with people trying to explain how the rails and switching work, IN A TRAIN TYCOON GAME! Think about that for a second. This is not to mention the other hundreds of hours of videos explaining other basic mechanics of the game.
I tried to get a refund, but because I played too long and tried to give this game a chance, I'm out my gift card, happy birthday to me, I guess.

- Some tasks seem quite unrealistic, and they ruin dlc scenarios (of which I have bought all) because the game ends if you fail one task. So after about 3 tries you don't bother replaying because the game isn't about having fun but more about (re-loading an old save) and being an IT specialist trying to troubleshoot an algorithm just to move onto the next set of even more complex codes...
I played the German DLC, a total of 8 times, and have still not been able to win. Making money isn't the problem, its micromanaging through menus to duplicate tracks, trains, and endless problem solving to work around the game's limitations....
- The UI slows down gameplay; and it isn't very sophisticated. Even if you're pretty good at putting down routes, sorting through menu after menu makes the game feel like a desk-job in micro-management.
- Pop-ups are annoying as hell, and the music isn't memorable either. I ended up playing Railroad Tycoon's music in the background, for nostalgia....
- The voice acting is particularly cringe-worthy and grating especially if you've just lost a scenario, and the cartoon characters have always felt agonisingly painful from the start.
- There's no multiplayer? I'd expect that from a game like this...
This game is pretty much Railroad Tycoon but with prettier graphics, but less fun. It leaves a lot to be desired... After being out on the market for so long it still feels unpolished. That being said I'll probably play it for another 20 more hours before I put it in the grave.

Overview / Gameplay Mechanics
Railway Empire features a dynamic management component. It is set between the 1800s and early-1900s and to succeed, you must build your company by building a sustainable transport network that is connected to cities. In-turn, the quicker that you grow your connected city the more opportunity you must invest into city industries and businesses to expand your revenue. Your network and cities are supported by transporting goods from rural businesses to cities, according to a city’s demands.
Additionally, there are various train locomotives to use which range from freight-focused, mail and passenger-focused or mixed focus. Trains, as well as a variety of other upgrades, such as improving the safety of your trains to gain more revenue per train trip, are researched as you gain Innovation Points. Railway Empire also features a business component, where you can invest in stocks, buy shares of your competitors, and bid on industries and businesses.
This game is tycoon-like and the complexity of inter-connected systems makes it an extremely enjoyable and fun game. It is easy to learn but difficult to master, and I found that even the objectives provided a great challenge, rarely feeling that the objectives were frustrating. While at times it was frustrating to restart a scenario, I had a great time playing it when I coupled my play with a television show on my other monitor.
Within Railway Empire, there are various goods to supply, things to research, businesses to invest, but ultimately, the decade-based focus of the game provided a good amount of variety in each playthrough. For example, the look of cities changed as the years progressed, as did the industries and locomotives. This was an excellent choice by the developers because it resulted in a different experience on each playthrough, which by virtue, added replayability. I also found the geography and visualisation of the United States to be eye-catching and engaging.
Campaign / Scenarios Mode
Railway Empire features a solid campaign which is enjoyable and logical, but simple. The story is supported by cutscenes and voice-acting, which I think added to the broader experience of the story. The campaign focuses on the initial establishment of the rail system in the United States to the expansion of it across the nation state. I reflect that the campaign was not very challenging, and as such, do not expect a strong storytelling effort. That said, I am new to rail tycoons. As a result, I think this game, while simple, provided a strong introduction into the mechanics of this type of game, and it is this accessibility that makes it also welcoming for beginning players.
Railway Empire also features Scenarios. Scenarios are a collection of missions across the United States which incorporates different narratives and objectives and is supported by voice dialogue. Scenarios are notably different from the campaign in which there is no consistency between missions nor is there cutscenes. I think that the scenarios were a joy to play and is a logical continuation to the campaign because you are still getting some sort of purpose for each mission. Noting this, the scenarios are significantly more challenging than the campaign, which as mentioned earlier, provides a sense of fulfilment on completion rather than being a frustrating experience.
Negatives
Throughout my 115-hour playthrough of Railway Empire, I did not encounter any game-breaking glitches, but I did experience crashes very rarely. More importantly however, I identified a variety of issues on the two mission ‘South & South-East’ section of the Scenarios mode. I found that the narrator’s speech was inaudible, which was disappointing. Likewise, I noticed that there were a variety of grammatical issues in the text of these missions. Across 10+ patches, I am surprised that both issues were not identified and fixed.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Railway Empire is a pretty good rail management simulation game. It features a solid campaign that provides accessibility to beginners and a very challenging, yet rewarding and engaging Scenarios mode. It also features a strong dynamic of gameplay systems across different decades, providing variety in each playthrough. Noting these positives, I found the ‘South & South-East’ section of the Scenarios mode to be marred by audio and text issues. For AUD$69.95, I recommend this game on sale because it was slightly too expensive. That being said, I think those that do purchase it, regardless of the price, will enjoy it.
Rating
7.75/10
Pros
• Gameplay mechanics are vast, diverse, and engaging
• Scenarios provide great replayability and challenge to the seasoned player
• Campaign is solid, supported by well-done voice-acting and interesting cutscenes
• Appealing visuals on the cities, objectives, and landscape of the United States
Cons
• Inaudible audio and various text issues in some missions in the Scenarios mode

I found you can't make a bridge with more than 2 tracks. To have 4 tracks over a river you need to make 2 dual track bridges. When you have a switching yard on either end of your station sometimes it works sometimes it does not. I quit over not being able to have trains leave from one end of a station with a switching yard. The game was no help.
The track laying was more difficult than it needed to be. Instead of being able to free form where you wanted the track to go it would hold onto a curve and you had to keep making clicks for where the curve would end, and then continue on with another section.
I found the game's idiosyncrasies to be maddening.

As a huge fan of Transport Tycoon I had high hopes and maybe for some some the highly focus on industry and trains would be enough but within the hours I played after understanding the route design it became tedious and I lost any real desire to continue.
This might be ok for some people but feels like a 90s game without the enhancements we deserve.

+ Great graphics that mix modern with early-mid 2000s PC style.
+ Replayability for scenarios, free play and challenges, thanks to multiple characters.
+ Lots and lots of trains going down the bend and around the track- wait wut
+ Trains look good and sound even better.
+ Around $50 worth of DLC content with NO MICROTRANSACTIONS.
+ Can be played easily in Windowed mode while you do other things.
+ Steam workshop support for extra maps.
+ Map editor.
+ LISTEN TO THEM WHISTLES BOI MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM-
- Campaign is short. Can be finished in a few hours.
- Manual pausing takes away from your level score (...really, guys?).
- Stock market isn't very deep. You can buy and sell and merge.
- Only steam locomotives and only one diesel, no electrics. Diesel and electric fans best keep looking.
- DLCs only provide a limited selection of extra locomotives. France provides the most with 10, but most only have 2-3 with the rest of the tech tree still using American engines.
- Limited to 1830 - 1930. No Big Boy nor Kriegslok here.
- Currently no Asia/Russia DLCs.
- William Clark in the South America DLC is a f*cking @sshole. STOP STEALING MA MONEY!
- Running with uncapped frames can risk overheating your computer.
- Better have a deep wallet if you want all those DLCs.
- Tracks can't get super-complex like they can in Transport Fever 2.

Pros:
Very In depth Business simulator as well. Purchase supply depots, businesses and industries that all use your materials to increase your bottom line.
In Depth Rail Pathing. You need to setup travel routes, set Directional signals, and program signal blocks. Truly build your system the way you want to. While daunting, and a little difficult to make it all work, in the end I love drawing new rail lines and connecting the cities together
The game does allow you to ride along with your engine, which is rather cathartic to just let the game run and travel along your virtual routes.
Cons:
Not a great tutorial. If you play the campaign, it doesn't really ease you into all the finesse work the game has under the hood. I've played through 4 missions, and none of them talked about using Warehouses, or Using Station with Switching controls, both of which are buildings you'll want to use, to save a lot of time. I recommend looking for a Youtube video or 2 to help with the finer aspects, if you feel like you can build lines efficiently, but don't seem to be thriving at the game.
The Railroad Personnel is a nice feature, but since conflicts can arise that stops your trains, It becomes quite aggravating when your busiest stations grind to a halt because 2 of your employees are having an argument. Eventually I just stopped hiring crews, unless I was trying to set a speed world record.
The competitors. While it's an entire business sim, and the goal is to make large amounts of money, that means you're often in competition. Problem is, they become quite annoying when they comment on every little bad thing that happens to you, especially if they caused it.
This is a personal complaint, but i wish there was a mode to actually drive the engine, and follow your signals and manage the speed. I originally bought this game thinking you could, but that was an error on my part.
Overall:
I initially bought this game thinking this would be a game to simulate routes and drive an engine over them. While that's not the core gameplay loop at all, I did find myself having fun drawing railway networks, connecting cities, and transporting goods and passengers all across the country. While playing the campaigns and finding the competitors irksome, and being confused why I could never seem to boom my empire as much, I started watching some youtube Videos to help.
I learned about the Stations with Switching controls, which makes it easier to do what I tried to do manually with points, and Warehouses, where my smaller engines could deliver singular rural goods to this station, then faster stronger freight lines could deliver these goods to the cities, freeing up the number of smaller rural deliveries. While there is alot more to learn about the businesses of running rails, and the fact the gameplay doesn't quite teach this very well, I've been enjoying the game a great deal now that I know alot more about how it's working.

If you are fine with a single player campaign, and if you are looking for an experience similar to Railroad Tycoon 3, then I would definitely recommend this game. What could have turned this from an OK game into an excellent game would be the ability to play this game with and against your friends.

I'm playing this game slowly so that I can savor it.
I've purchased all the additional scenarios and promise to buy any additional releases for this game.
My only comments about this current version is that I don't enjoy having to play one of the stock characters with certain abilities in each game. This reminds be of choosing a character at the beginning of Oregon Trail. Just let me be me. In other older games like this you got to play yourself and were able to buy shares of your own company.
The second suggestion I have - and it's SO MINOR and I may be wrong about this, but in the opening animation for the game (is there an option to skip this, by the way?), I think the windmill is spinning BACKWARDS. Not the kind of review you're looking for, I'm sure, but we have a windmill on our land and I've never taken my laptop out to compare the two, but something about the animated windmill looks off.
otherwise it's a PERFECT GAME and it's just what a soul needs.
Many thanks to everyone who worked to put this game together!

What a mistake!
This game feels like it was done by two teams. Team 1 was responsible for visual and laying tracks aspect of the game and in my opinion they've done it great, 10 out of 10. The map is gorgeous, laying tracks simply brilliant. I wouldn't change a thing.
Unfortunately Team 2 was tasked to do everything else and they just screwed everything.
Locomotives can pull 8 cars no matter if its a loc from early 19th century or more modern from the 20th century. The only difference is the speed. It doesnt even matter if your cargo is iron ore or passengers or feathers - every train can pull 8 of it. What a load of rubbish!!!
I mean really? I had to check if I bought the right game. Maybe I ordered something else by mistake? I checked its says Railway Empire and a big locomotive on the front cover.
It's like saying that every aircraft can carry 300+ passengers across the Atlantic no matter if its a first plane made by the Wright brothers or the Boeing 787 and the only difference is the speed. (facepalm)
Just a question to DEVS : Out of everything you could have done wrong you manage to do the trains/locomotives part horribly wrong?
The player chooses from cartoonish characters who is going to run the company i.e. Scientist, General, Mobster etc. It not only kills the emersion for me but I think they should be in charge of a lab, army and organized crime not a railway company for christ sake!
I only managed to play this crap for 5 hours and will not be playing again, waste of money unless this going to be changed which by the amount of paid DLC I highly doubt it.
For those of you that enjoy the game ... well keep enjoying, my opnion shouldn't matter , but for those who are thinking whether or not to buy it - don't do it! don't be deceived by the stunning graphics.

For me, this game is a perfrect mix between being too simple/easy and too hard/complicated. Also, it has a strange magic for me, which I cannot really explain.. The music, setting, art.. everything just comes together greatly. I bought all the DLCs as soon as they came out, even though they are a bit overpriced, for what they offer, IMHO.
There is nothing more relaxing for me than coming home after a night shift, sit at my PC, make a coffee and play this game.. Too bad I completed campaign and all scenarios on hardest diff long time ago and there is no more content for me now :( I would love if devs would make another, longer, campaign. I really hope there will be proper sequel in the future.. This game is a jewel for me.
The new challenge thing , where you have new scenario each month and you compete in a leaderbord, is a great addition too.
To sum it up, I would recommend this game to every transport tycoon fan. The only bad thing about this game is that there is no more content when you finish it all :D (yeah, you can play randomized map, but somehow AI is too easy on these maps, even on hardest diff, so it is a bit boring)

There are plenty of campaigns, scenarios, sandbox play, and global challenges for you to try, plus the DLC often goes on sale for $3-4, which is a total steal. Definitely worth a try if you like managing your traffic in games like Cities: Skylines!
