Ahhhhh RAGE, my first open world fps rpg of sorts. then fallout and metro and so on. But Rage started it for me and for what it is i love it. Granted the game has an incredibly short story it is a still wildly entertaining and satisfiying game. with not well aged but managable interfaces and gunplay it still ranks with a top spot after a decade.

I finished all the plot carefully in super Nightmare mode. This game is better than I thought. Indeed, for 2022, the graphs and gameplay of this game are outdated. But in 2011, I think it's still good. After all, it's a game made by ID. It's a new attempt. You can't measure it by too perfect standards.
Of course, this game also has many disadvantages. The shaking of walking makes me dizzy when I played the game. The quests are also boring. It is not like a real open world, but a linear story.
It is said that Rage2 has a bad reputation. I have bought it and I will try it when I have time.
Finally, I don't know when I can find two friends to make the last six achievements together. I'm going to put it aside for the time being. After all, I have too many games to play and I don't have so much time.

Fun shooter. Good asking price. Runs well enough on newer hardware. Has some flaws, like unrealistically tanky enemies that can survive 6 shots to the head, and an obscene amount of weapons and ammo types that you need an MMO mouse just to keep up with. But the story is nice, the gameplay is fun. It is exciting and a fulfilling experience.

Binge played for three days straight, it's a mixture of Doom & Crossout, combining everything I loved in those two seperately. The driving and races with quests and upgrades from Crossout & the shooting and variety of monsters and scenery from Doom. Interactions feel good, storyline checks out. Sad to see that Rage 2 has terrible reviews and crashes throughout, but this version was fantastic!

I don't get it why there are so many negative reviews. As a shooter it doesn't much differ from other mediocre shooters. The only problem is, that the story line was too short and there are not so many side quests. The moment I thought 'Now the real game starts', it was over. Also I wish there were more towns and communities.
All in all, great concept. Kinda reminded me of Mad Max.
This game had so much potential. RAGE 2 looks nothing like this.

Very solid game. A little on the ugly side, even taking into consideration the year it came out, but the character models are surprisingly well done and high-quality, it's mostly the actual world textures that are low quality.

The ending is a little weird, but seeing as there's a sequel to this game it's not all that bad, it's just a little anti-climactic.

It wasn't too hard to beat, even on the hardest difficulty, but still a fun game.

8/10 definitely worth the money. DLC is also cool, although very short if you do it after completing the main campaign. The DLC is meant to be done alongside the main story.

After recently completing the game almost 10 years from its release I find RAGE a flawed game with a lot of enjoyment which compensates the dullness of the story. It's open world is not a lie on itself but one can find it at least controversial.

Let's start with the graphics though. id Software is known of creating eye candy decade after decade by its legendary franchises Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake. Their newest franchise to this date RAGE is also a good looking game and NPC's look decent enough, but wtf is wrong with some of the environmental stuff. Most of what you see looks awesome, but then there is stuff which looks like that rendering progress it is on 20%, especially when you get very close to some targets. My suggestion is that the devs tried to create a compromise between performance and quality, which works but I would not said that graphics were anything jaw-dropping not even on 2011 standards.

Then there is open world which is an interesting speculation when of course RAGE breaks the thin red line of linearity, but there is no hope of wide open areal environments. Not there was much to do either, there is some collectables and some secrets to explore not to mention few side missions and tasks, but do not expect anything like Fallout though. The progression is limited and the map opens one part after the other when you proceed further in a storyline.

Speaking of which I found story to be weakest part of RAGE and I never felt anything for anybody, and that was not for I was enjoying of the gameplay too much, but the game just lacked elements to create anything unforgettable. While the first setting with cutscene starts promisingly the game stumbles right after with few NPCs which names and motives fade swiftly. I just wanted to proceed and hoped that the story would take a peak, only to find more characters with cool names and titles but it felt like every NPCs' primary function was to set player on the next mission. There was one exception though and that was Bash TV's JK Stiles, a crazy fat guy sitting in his command deck full of monitors in clothing which could present bad taste, but even he is a star of only one mission. Another thing they could have done better was to give some more screen time for the bad guys too, because during the whole game you could hear about Authority and how they were trying you to take you down, but never I heard much anything else about them, like their ranks, history or deeper motives. Usually this could be done by creating some Nemesis on their ranks or showing their actions in a wider light just like in Half-Life 2 where bad guys are marked immediately. In RAGE it felt like I was scratching the surface and it already ended.

However RAGE is a product of id Software and they certainly know their value and where they are good with and that is creating a fun-to-play experience with AAA-quality. Every battle you take is full of options and you have a wide arsenal to choose from and limit goes beyond ballsy guns and 'nades offering multiple ammunition options for each gun and some cool tools like remote controllable exploding cars, sentry turrets and moving bots attached with minigun. The AI uses different approaches and while some wild thug might just take his baseball bat and run crazily to you an elite Authority soldier activates his plasma shield and proceeds carefully his armed colleagues next to him.

RAGE is good fps with many flaws and can feel like a prototype and a step of trying to make something more complex and vast than DOOM, to which they have come back with and even RAGE 2 is out already enjoying controversial popularity. Who knows maybe I grab it one day to see has it done those features better where its pre-successor failed.

This is id Software's worst game, that being said it just means that is a good game, nothing spectacular or innovative.

Think of a mix between fallout and a classic FPS, 4 years later Mad Max would get a lot of inspiration from this tittle.

Despite being 10 yo has aged well, the only cons I can say are
minor technical issues with AMD hardware and a weak sound design, music is boring and plain.

This is a really good game, the shooting is fun and the guns are loud and feel like they are really impacting enemies. Total disappointment when this game first launched as it is not what the promised, but a very solid shooter non the less. Expect little and get quite a bit of enjoyment. Easily worth the asking price.

This game didn't get much love.. And I see why. It's linear. A bit bland in areas. But I like it and this is why. Art and design is real cool. Post apocalyptic ruins. It's Doom game play in that setting, and ya get to drive a car sometimes. The AI really has moves. hard to hit at times, and they will challenge you. There are many different enemies in the game. A lot of ways to end them too. Ya get a boom a rang as a weapon. It can take off a head and fly back to you allowing you to throw it again. It has the best shot gun ever. Rage got age now. So it can be had pretty cheap. If you like first person shooters, it's worth it.

I don't see why anyone would play Rage in 2021 yet for some reason I did exactly this. Rage was released in 2011 and you can tell it's 10 years old. While not being totally ugly its gameplay is really rough around the edges. The AI is good, the gun feel is decent, the arsenal provides some variety and you can carry all the guns with you at any time. Nice.

Unfortunately the story is boring as hell, the character development is non existent, the environments are way too similar, the level design within the missions is a one way corridor, the enemies are bulletproof during the last third of the game, the economy and upgrade system are bare-bones, the pseudo hub like zones you can explore are absolutely useless and seems to exist only to justify adding vehicles in the game... and the ending is probably the worst I've ever seen in a game.

Oh... you can do races if you're tired of shooting. While not being good, it reminded me of MegaRace which I really liked when I was a kid, so I played them all, but don't expect much from this.

So yes, a decade after it's release and I finally forced myself to finish Rage. Actually it took me like 5 maybe 6 tries into various stages of the game over the years until I finished it and oh boy what a mixed feelings I have.

First Id software game based on id-tech 5 and it looks both gorgeous and hideous at the same time. Not sure if texture resolution and detail was so bad because of consoles but damn. Also you can see how character models somehow just stand out in the environment.

Combat and weapons feel pretty solid even though it has a strong reseblance of doom 3 which certainly wasn't my favorite but still is fun. Story on the other hand I did not care a bit about and I think even though they created this base for post-apo world with different factions and all you would expect somehow they failed to deliver the reason that would make you want to finish the authority and I think they were so desperate with the story that they did not even present any final boss thich is pretty bold move for id software game. In the end the scorcher dlc boss somehow made up for it but damn that third level was the worst filler gargabe any dev can pick.

So do I regret spending about 15-20 hours playing the nightmare difficulty? Probably not. It sure is one and done for me but it did not leave any strong neither good or bad feelings, it just exists without anything really interesting happening except the lack of final boss fight and that's it for Rage.

RAGE is my favorite game of all time! (I've played Rage II and it doesn't even come close!) The whole game is a beautiful masterpiece of post-apocalyptic artwork and environments that take you away to a whole different world that, after hundreds of hours spent in that world, you want to explore every nook & cranny. I'm writing this review in 2021, many years after this games release date, and to me, it still stands up as the best First-Person Shooter I've played.

+ Great selection of weapons
+ Good driving mechanics

+/- Story works, but is hardly special. Our hero was locked in cryostasis when a threat to Earth materialized. The threat happened, we wake and enter the “new” world. We join a Resistance movement, fight bandits and Authority. Fairly standard stuff
+/- The textures. Up close, they’re awful, some of the worst I’ve seen. Stand a back a bit, and they look amazing. Landscapes and vistas look impressive, but wall switches don’t
+/- No day / night cycle while you’re out in the wasteland

- Level paths might be well-designed, but too often they feel tight and narrow
- There’s no point to crafting except to pad the gameplay
- There are a few bosses, but no final boss – surprising in an Id game
- Enemy AI is extremely predictable. Soldiers tend to stick behind cover; mutants will charge your position relentlessly. Once you know who you’re facing, combat rarely surprises
- Not a true open world. Hubs connected by corridors that you will traverse repeatedly, fighting the same re-spawning bandits over and over
- Re-used levels. Expect to play some levels twice. The second time is sometimes in reverse of the first time
- If you don't save often, you will pay the price

5/10

The quintessential Linear Action Adventure experience. Not the best hit detection. But certain satisfying when the bullets meet their target. DLC helps flesh out the experience with a widened array of weapons and side missions.

The game and it's mechanics aren't very deep & the story is farily linear consisting almosy entirely of fetch quests. However, there are some varied and interesting environments to explore & quite a few different race events to mess around with.

Perfect if you just want a simple FPS game to play.

RAGE is a decent FPS/RPG. Running, gunning, shooting, looting - it's good fun. Some bugs here and there, but nothing too bad. The gameplay is smooth, the story is okay, but the whole atmosphere and sheer carnage that prevails in the post-apocalyptic world of RAGE are probably the biggest selling points. Can't say the same for the graphics though - from afar the textures look quite nice, but once you get close... Oh boy, I've never seen textures uglier than in this game, because calling their quality p1ss-poor would be an understatement. I think it has to do with the 'megatexture' approach they took to make the game world look unique, but I'd rather have nice textures, even if they're repeated in a few places, than everything grainy and distorted when you look up close. In any case, this may not be the most majestic game ever made, but apart from the visuals I think it's held up pretty well.

It's like Fallout, DOOM, and Twisted Metal had a baby, and that baby grew up to be a mutant-stomping machine.

Quest hubs provide, well, quests, gear, and vehicular races. Did I mention racing? Yeah, that's a thing. Sometimes with mini guns, rockets, and mines. Missions are fun. Driving into the wasteland, blowing away enemy vehicles along the way before getting out to raid a bandit or mutant den hasn't gotten old. And the one boss I've fought so far was pretty epic.

Gunplay is solid. Enemies react to being hit in a satisfying way, though they're a little spongy. Luckily, you can purchase and find better ammo. Or just decapitate them with the shotgun at close range (that never gets old either). Sometimes I'm sneaking in, sniping, and taking cover. Other times I'm running around, circle strafing as waves of enemies pour in at me. As far as the weapons go, the usual suspects are here with a few cool twists. All of them feel good to use.

Locations are atmospheric and detailed. Towns look and feel lived in. Bandit hideouts are filthy and creepy (the music is awesome), mutant lairs are the stuff of nightmares (in a good way).

9 hours in, there isn't a deep narrative, and that's okay. I'm a stranger in a strange land, trying to survive, and trying to help the locals in exchange for cash, gear, automobile parts, etc. I'm really enjoying my experience. This is a solid shooter without any tedious platforming, loot-grinding, or overly involved crafting. There's always something to do, somewhere to explore, and something to upgrade. It's pure atmosphere and adrenaline, and it's dripping with style.

Despite the technical issues, Rage is still an excellent choice for fans of FPS games. Despite all its flaws, the game still stands out for its inspired design and well-adjusted gameplay.

Rage offers a sharp gameplay and impressive graphics considering its release date. However it has a convincing atmosphere, it lacks a robust narrative.

Classic FPS from the days before everything needed a deep backstory and mountains of lore. Reminiscent of id's previous FPS games, but not nearly as fun as classic Quake or Doom. Still, it's a good time. If you want to just turn your mind off and shoot mutants or raiders with big guns, this is the game for you.

I have played the game at release in 2011 and now finished it again in 2021. Ten years later this still looks amazing, especially the outdoor environments and character animations. Granted, up close most textures / objects are a blurry mess, but during gameplay or from the proper distance, it is a real treat. The design and style of the post-apocalyptic wasteland in rage is one of my favourite portrayals.
It is a linear shooter with some mild crafting and rpg elements, mostly mission based with an open world hub connecting the different locations. The driving is fine but takes some getting used to. There are 8 separate coop missions if you manage to find another player, the DLC is worth it as well.
The later part of the game does feel somewhat underdeveloped, but that does not stop me from highly recommending this.

Got this during the winter sale (one of the few things that was great about 2020) living in a third world country means I don't get to play newer game titles unless I have a beefy PC or the latest console. I remember loving gameplay of this game when I was in Elementary and I'm happy that I was able to get it.

For a 10 year old game with not so demanding specs it sure is really pretty and amazing. There is not one thing I can complain about the game, it is as awesome as I remember it being. I definitely recommend getting this game, if I can get my PC upgraded some more I'll definitely get the sequel as well.

It's fun simplistic shooter.

+ Combat is very basic, but harsh and awesome. All weapons and enemies feel heavy. Enemies are kind of bullet-sponges but just enough to feel challenging and not tedious.
+ Level design is great.
+ Tons of content and dozens of side activities and mini-games.
+ You can replay most main missions as side missions with slightly different variation.

- The ammo management sucks. If you go into mutant area, you better buy some ammo before or you'll end up fighting bare-handed, but if you go into bandit or enforcer area you'll be given way too much ammo.
- Exploration aspect is pretty poor.
- Side missions lack variety.
- Racing and car combat sucks and there's way too much of it.
- Upgrades barely have any impact, they're almost useless.
- Ending sucks.

I don't really know what to make of this game. It's an oldie but super interesting. The graphic style is a bit weird but it works and eventually starts to grow on you. I was mostly impressed by character designs and animations. The whole vibe reminds me of every 90s sci-fi ever.

I love the old sluggish yet tactical feel of the gun fights. Every item or weapon gets it's fair share of action. At first I thought the story was kinda dull and generic but it starts to open up as you progress. Rage has it's own thing going on and I respect that.

I only had one tech problem, audio cuts. Everything else works fine but for whatever reason music, footsteps, any sound really cuts out every now and then. It comes back it's just weird is all. She's an older game (2011) so most lowly rigs will have a hard time getting it to work right.

This game is very fun I don't have a hole lot of hours on it but...

Rage 2 borrows heavy game play elements for the 1st title.

This is a bit more of an hyper energy fallout 3.

Yes it is rocky at times with it's rpg grind aspect but that does not take away from the fun.

By this point anyone who wants to play Rage probably already has. If you're really not sure, let me put it to you this way: Borderlands, with better gunplay and much better driving, but no loot or comedy. Straightforward wasteland FPS and combat racing gameplay. It runs like a dream even on modest hardware -- my RTX 2080 Super can propel it to 120 FPS in 8K! -- and it looks great even in 2020.

HOWEVER, I have to tell you that IF you're going to play Rage, you absolutely must go to the PC Gaming Wiki and investigate some launch options for the game. I recommend skipping the intro videos and customizing the menu mouse sensitivity at the least. You might also investigate id5Tweaker, which will let you uncap the framerate, but I don't really recommend doing that because it janks up the vehicle physics. (It's fine in FPS sections, though, and you can use a hotkey to toggle the framerate cap on and off.) By the way, I recommend using a gamepad for the driving sections, and possibly the menus, too. The game was built for the gen7 consoles (360/PS3) and the mouse-driven menus are a little awkward.

A lot of people went into Rage with high expectations and were disappointed, but there's still a great game here to enjoy if you like this kind of game. Give it a chance and go in with an open mind, and you'll have a good time.

I wanted to recommend it but the only really positive thing I could think of was the character models which still look pretty good to this day. Other than that I thought the quests were boring, the story was bad, there were many technical problems and graphical glitches. The combat seemed clunky and even the driving was meh. The kind of a game where it would be okay to buy if it was on sale for less than $5.

The story setup is simple: the world was nearly wiped out by an asteroid and you emerge from an underground vault.
Blinking in the bright light of the sun, you take a few moments to admire the scenery and are then abruptly attacked.
Id's wasteland is not a friendly place.
Most of those you meet in Rage desperately want to kill or capture you, and gradually you begin to find out why.
Despite the presence of upgrade systems, mini-games, side quests and car racing challenges, Rage is primarily a shooter.

It's a fairly traditional shooter, too, favoring smaller zones of combat instead of the open spaces seen in Far Cry 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Larger explorable areas exist in id Software's wasteland, but they're merely playgrounds for the vehicles.
You can ride around in buggies and heavily armored cars, blast rockets at bandit vehicles and speed over jumps to smash floating beacons and earn extra rewards.
It can be fun for a while, but by the time you get to Rage's second half, it starts to feel more like filler.
The gunplay is always entertaining, as you adventure through corridors and interiors lined with hiding spots as mutants erupt from unseen spaces and bandits fire pistols and shotguns. Rage is not revolutionary shooter, but it's extremely well made.
The weapons in Rage feel powerful, and not just because they're loud. Hit a mutant in the leg and you'll see it snap back. Bandits under heavy fire will scramble behind cover with their hands over their heads.
Charging mutants can be abruptly stopped with a well-aimed shotgun blast.
Hit an armored enemy across the chest with assault rifle spray fire and he'll react to every impact.
It may sound like minor detail, but the high degree of correlation between shot and effect has a huge impact on making each weapon exciting to use.
There's a big difference between a shotgun blast that simply kills a mutant and a shotgun blast that knocks them into a backflip and blows apart their skull.

Combat encounters build in difficulty and throw a variety of increasingly difficult enemies in the mix, forcing you to be creative with your weapons.
Eventually you'll acquire all the basic gun types, including a sniper rifle, rocket launcher and two assault rifles.
Though only four can be active at a time, you carry everything in your inventory, so weapons are never left behind.
The creative element comes into play once you gain access to all the different ammunition types and crafted items.
Rage is littered with glittering components.
With the proper materials and associated schematic you can build new ammunition or items at any time.
The products can be as simple as armor piercing ammunition or as complex as mind control bolts fired from your crossbow that turn enemies into walking bombs for you to move around.
Later on you'll find advanced ammunition types become almost necessary to use.
Deploying sentry turrets and spider-like attack robots is extremely helpful against enemies with thick armor plating and slavering groups of mutant.
Though only a handful of the alternate attack options truly stand out – the razor-edged boomerang-like wingsticks, the mind control bolts and dynamite bolts to name a few – all are useful against Rage's intelligent enemies.
Even foes that run on a suicidal path toward at you armed with sticks and blades display a degree of self-preservation.
hey approach in zig-zag fashion and flip off walls and ceilings to make precise targeting no simple matter.
Others fight from a distance, cowering behind bits of cover and popping out to take a few shots.
They duck, dodge, switch positions and in general don't act like mannequins patiently waiting to receive a bullet through the skull.
A few types even work together, ducking behind those with energy shields for additional cover. Rarer special types, like mutants that toss vision-smearing gunk, are especially aggressive, sprinting around and generally making life a lot more difficult. And as further evidence id Software knows how to pace a fight, just when you think you've exhausted a particular combat arena's challenge, a giant with a tentacle on its arm will burst onto the scene and send you scrambling for cover.

As the enemies become more fearsome and contribute to a sense of mounting conflict, the environments match pace with increasingly complex and elaborate designs, culminating in some incredible combat zones toward the end of the game.
Seemingly every inch of this post-apocalyptic virtual space is touched with unique art and texturing, creating a pervasive sense that this world looks authentic and lived-in.
From the grimy, rusted architecture of the town of Wellspring to the dazzling exterior of Subway Town, spiny with jutting rail lines and sewers, to even the most basic bandit hideouts and broken buildings, the exploration spaces in Rage's world feel detailed in the most exhaustive, obsessive way possible.
Though so much of the world wants to kill you, inside the main towns you'll find vendors to buy and sell items, dig up side quests and participate in racing circuits.
It's easy to lose track of what they say as you're distracted by the high quality of their movements facial animations, accentuating the care that clearly went into each and every character model.
In fact, their appearance and accent constitutes the majority of their personality, since beyond the spectacle of their animations, few characters in Rage are particularly interesting.

Rage leaves the horror elements of Doom and Quake for an often quirky, goofy tone.
You'll encounter a few truly strange characters, like an obese kingpin that runs a murder-for-entertainment show called Mutant Bash TV and a hermit of a scientist holed up in a sleek metallic lair, but they're exceptions in what's otherwise a bland cast.
Most characters tend to be more memorable for their accessories – the head tattoo of Subway Town's leader, the glittering glasses of the first NPC you meet, the belly shirt of the girl who teaches you how to use wingsticks – than anything they say or do.
Instead you fight pockets of bandits, crazed mutants and the relatively faceless Authority.
They're fun to shoot at.
The story is propelled by a series of short-term goals that gradually reveal bits of the overall tale.

Rage's driving vehicles you shoot rockets and flip around in armored cars like in a kart racer.
The controls and mechanics are surprisingly good, with responsive handling that makes looping around tracks and arena battle modes quite a bit of fun.
Against the computere pelting enemy with machine guns in a number of modes.
There's quite a bit to unlock in online play too, including mortars, cluster bombs, and pulse cannons to outfit on your vehicle.
The available modes offer a good mix of gameplay styles involving capture points.
All kinds of arcade-like silliness are included here like quad-damage pickups, speed boosters and ramps, lending a manic style to the action reminiscent of older arena shooters like Quake III.
For a developer with a track record like id Software to only include the car combat modes as an option for online competitive play is a little odd, though it can still serve as a nice bonus once you're done with the single-player content.

If you really want to squeeze everything you can out of Rage, there are a number of side quests and mini-games to take part in.
Throughout your adventure you'll find cards to use in a Magic-esque battle game, you can gamble in a knife game that Bishop from Aliens would easily win, or take on a few driving delivery quests.
Many of the game's side quests obtained from NPCs or job boards in town are fairly basic, several simply repopulating the combat zones you already cleared on the main quest with enemies.

Rage's economy at least works well, and if you choose to clear all the side quests or have a good gambling run.

It tries to be a lot of things but fails to deliver in most of them.

Also the fact that it released with a load of technical issues that took a lot of time to fix and even after that it still doesn't feel like its working as it should.

The only thing I liked was the gunplay and a few gunfires, other than that, it feels like a generic game.

Its not Borderlands, even tho it tries to be. Its not DOOM. Its not Far Cry. What the fuck is it? I still don't know.
And that fucking ending... What the hell was that?
Looked interesting at first but quickly became boring. Bland open world and uninteresting story. Your mute character doesn't help either. Gun play is ok. Visuals are beautiful for a 2011 game, but even a GTX 1060 with i7 will have a hard time running this at a stable 60fps.

Go play Borderlands, it's better.

I haven't had great expectations, bought this game because Rage 2 was on sale and I wanted to know the full story before I start secquel.

Let me tell you - this game is just great:
- dynamic shooting mechanism, like a combination of Doom and Fallout 3 / 4.
- much less looting and crafting than in Fallout 3 / 4, which is aslo nice,
- driving around and racing mechanism is great, and I hate most racing games.

One small disadvantage: basically you move around inside one not-so-large location with small village, one medium city and couple of enemy locations / villages / severs. Some missions take place twice in the same enemy location (acquire item, then clear the are of enemies ect)

But I really enjoy it. And I think you might like it as well.
I have bought the base game and The Scorchers™ DLC for ~ £ 6.00 @ 2game .cm

Rage is pretty fun, it has the apocalypse look and the bad guys that contains in but the campagin is rather short and the story is weak. The main bad guys (and good guys) are so outnumbered by the bandits its suprising the bandits haven taken over. Futhermore is the bandits smart, crafty and to be honest some times i rahter side with them. The story is fast without much in it, the sidequest are too few and there is no map which is super anoying. The loot system and the shop system are als in need of an upgrade, in all there is alot of small things that make the big picture wrong.

All in all its an okay shooter, held back by its story and bland open world.

Imagine Metro, Mad Max, and Borderlands, then lower your expectations regarding every aspect that made those other games great.

Gets repetitive after a while.
A slightly more interesting story than most cookie cutter titles of the genre.
An open world that doesn't have much incentive for the player to fully explore.
Cardboard cutout characters and enemies.
Fetch quests galore and the mediocre vehicle sections and vehicle combat.

Despite these drawbacks it's not a bad game, but it is not a good game either. Its just an okay FPS.

Recommended during a sale.

I finished for the first time the campaign of this game for my twitch channel. I have to say the game is very good. There are some issues, There are audio bugs (which some get) especially during the vehicle portions of the game. I also had to disable the movement of the head as I found it problematic.
Problems aside though, the game is a lot of fun. The story is an ok sci-fi without getting tiresome.
The best thing about the game though is the shooting mechanics. One of the most fun games in that aspect. It reminded me a bit of Raven games.
The full gameplay of the main storyline plus some side missions took me a bit under 18 hours. On normal difficulty setting.
If you like post apocalyptic settings and like FPS games, this is a very good one.

Its a fun shooter, but for a 2011 game it is extremely dated.

The amount of variety in weapons and gadgets in combat was great. The way enemies react to you is really well done and well animated, making each combat encounter somewhat unique. Being an Id shooter the combat and guns are the best part of the game.

The open world was a cool idea but it is ultimately pointless as there's nothing between you and the next objective besides 1 random event or car battles.

The story starts off great and is presented well, but after a while the pacing changes to be more abrupt and characters come and go too quickly. There's some okay side missions but most just involve you revisiting old areas with maybe a small change to the enemies or objective.

The world building was really well done, especially in town areas where each person has great unique animations and theres fun side activities to do in these areas as well like minigames or racing. There are also plenty of references to other games to keep an eye out for!

Being an id tech 5 game this game has issues, but these can mostly be fixed with some simple file edits.

There is mp racing modes and coop missions for this game but they are dead.

I would recommend the scorcher dlc which has some of the best levels and the best weapon in the game.

All in all its an okay shooter held back by its story and bland open world. You can get it relatively cheap on sale if interested.

I do not like the rage collection at all and although the id software made this game, version 2 of this game was really nonsense and it was a very nonsensical and stupid idea to follow the example of other games they made, for example, this game is a combination of madmax + doom and only doom is made by id software, and in my opinion, the rage collection is really a futile and failed attempt, and even version 1 of this game is better than version 2. 1 The game dimension becomes dull and repetitive for a long time, and 2 has been very sci-fi and ridiculous. The thing that bothers me the most is the boss fights of version 2, which is exactly a copy of doom. It is a personal opinion and each person has his own opinion.

This is by far, the most boring FPS I have ever played. It starts off innocent, you get a pistol, some bullets, go shoot things, it's fun at first. But as time goes on it just gets monotonous, things start to blend together. Weapons are either overpowered, underpowered, or just boring to use. The story is so unremarkable and generic I stopped caring about it about 5 or 6 hours in. The races are stupid, especially the rocket ralleys. Do not buy this game, it's not worth your money even if it's heavily discounted.

I got RAGE for free, but decided to shell out for its DLC, hoping that it would help me achieve 100% for the game. But I'm nearly through the campaign, and I've found that while I'm willing to play through the game once, and go out of my way to do the collections, I'm not willing to go the extra mile to 100%.

RAGE was ID Software's kinda-sorta come-back FPS, after the terrible Doom 3, but before the brilliant DOOM reboot. And RAGE is very, very derivative, and very, very linear, and very, very repetitive. It's trying to be Fallout and Borderlands, but while those games had other things going for them (RPG-lite features, and interesting stories, and open-worlds), RAGE is a very linear and very conventional FPS with post-apocalyptic paint smeared all over it.

RAGE is set after an asteroid impact destroys civilization as we know it. You're a soldier who was in deep-freeze and is revived long after the disaster. You have magic nano-machines which give you rapid healing.

The graphics are good, but the pop-in is nearly as bad as Duke Nukem Forever. There have been times when the textures didn't load at all, and frankly, I can still see them pop-in if I turn fast enough. And because it's post-apocalyptic, everything is in various shades of brown, provided you can see it at all, because most of the mission areas are in run-down caves and factories.

Sound design is decent, but forgettable. Enemies will call out to each other, and different groups have different voice-sets. All of the NPCs are voiced, and there's a considerable re-use of Steve Blum. I mean, it's decent, but it's nothing spectacular.

Gameplay is good, but it's so linear, and there are so many invisible walls. There are no alternate paths, either while driving, or while doing missions. Most of the mission areas are along thin corridors, so you really can't flank enemies either. It is so annoying. And world is tiny! There are two main settlements (or mission hubs), and that's it. The entire world is roughly the size of an omelette. You'll have seen the entirety of area 1 within 5 hours of playing, and you'll have seen everything that area 2 has to offer within 10. There's nothing else to it.

The shooting is great, and the weapons are fun, but there's no point in having so many different weapons if there are so few reasons to use more than a few. You can buy upgrades for a few of them, and at certain story-points, you'll get additional ammo for them, but you'll barely use most of them.

Spoilers, by the way. After you run into the big bads (the Authority), you should sell all of your regular ammo, and buy the armour-piercing stuff. There's no more point in keeping regular ammo, so you might as well sell it. Stock up between missions. Sell all of the pistol ammo and the specialist ammo (like the mind-control stuff), but keep some of the electrical stuff because those might be needed for certain areas (the game will give you some usually if needed though).

There's crafting in the game, so you can craft sentry bots and sentry guns, and radio-controlled exploding cars, and they sound a lot better than they are. I'd use them on occasion, but they're not as useful as they sound. The sentry guns get knocked over, the sentry bots get stuck on various invisible walls, and the radio-controlled cars get shot the second they're seen.

There are various minigames, which are mostly terrible. There's that old uber-macho one where you stick knives between the fingers of your hand, there's one from Monkey Island where you have to copy the other person's banjo strums, there's a really stupid gambling game... and there's that card game that you're collecting cards for throughout the game, and that really seems pointless considering how little money is at stake.

RAGE isn't a terrible game. It's a functional game that's derivative, lazy, unambitious and small. I got it for free, and I think it's awful. Imagine how I would have felt had I bought it for full price.

Rage is often adequate but never exceptional. While the gunplay is decent enough and the racing is strong if you are into this sort of thing, everything else is severly lacking. The story is meh, the characters are bland and the art design felt very generic. The art direction is gorgeous, atomosphere is great, the feeling of the weapons is awesome, animations are amazing, voice acting is perfect, the soundtrack is really cool, but the game try to mix genres for a not very convincing result. It want to make you feel you're in an open world but you soon realize that it's not open at all. It has some RPG elements, but it's not a RPG. It has racing, but it's not a racing game. It is a FPS, but you are more often walking/talking/racing than shooting. The balance is kinda strange, I really not liked the game the first time, but it has grown on me over the years. I think once you know what to (and not to) expect the experience is much more enjoyable. In the end RAGE is very unique, there is no other games like it. But it is WAY too easy in normal mode (Nightmare mode should be the default difficulty) and the ending is really unsatisfying (I strongly recommend to finish the game with the last mission of the DLC, feels much more like an ending). The game is way too much thought for consoles, it's his biggest flaw.

While I wouldn’t compare it to the likes of Fallout, Rage does stand out as an exceptional FPS experience in a post-apocalyptic setting. The world gets hit by an asteroid and humanity is on the brink, pretty standard but the story unfortunately does not get much deeper than this. You’re a silent protagonist and for the most part, an errand boy. Story seems to be injected just enough to get you from point A to point B. Despite this, the game makes up for this with entirely everything else it offers. The world of Rage is well designed and no two areas look alike despite the effect of a meteor kissing the earth. It looks great for a game released in 2011.

Your arsenal includes everything you’d expect from an FPS from Id Software, with a few notable ones such as a crossbow with mind control darts and a shotgun shooting rockets. Weapons often have more than one ammo type which makes every weapon feel useful and fun to use. They all sound heavy and realistic, bullet impacts often will stagger your enemies. You will also have access to several vehicles throughout your journey which is simple to control and destroy enemy vehicles as well.

Characters you will meet are made fairly well but lack depth as far as having any contribution to the story other than giving you quest style tasks to complete. The voice acting is on point and believable, though there were times where characters wouldn’t finish their sentences. I did not have this issue on my first play through in 2013. Upgrades are a large part of the game. You can upgrade your armor, weapons, and vehicles. Nothing like a skill tree, but the improvements are welcome additions to your guns and vehicles.

You’ll use hard cash to purchase these, which if you run out there are a gaggle of mini games to play for cash. Knife stabbing, a card battler, slot machine, and dice rolling are all easy ways to get some easy cash if you need it. You can also craft ammo, power ups, and gear such as turrets and RC car bombs. There are also a few easter egg rooms to Id’s older games and some inspiration for Rage to find.

There are several factions of bandits you will run into in the wasteland. While a majority of them operate the same, they all bring something different to the table as far as tactics. A handful of mutant types will also attempt to eat your face off. The Authority is your main adversary and the toughest enemies you will face in the game. Since my last time playing, I decided to run through the game again for this review. Similar to my last experience, normal is very easy in my opinion. There are 5 levels of difficulty if you get The Scorchers DLC. Nightmare will give you a run for your money if you don’t want to feel like a god if you’re experienced at shooters.

All in all, this game is straight forward in its approach, but the action and gun play is addicting. I had a lot of fun in 2013 the first go around, 7 years later it still holds true. For 10$ this is a steal and will likely get you 20 to 30 hours of gameplay.

Score: 7/10

Hyped for it fresh new detailed open world Rage satisfied with great big gameplay but it's small world/story left you wanting more.

Pros
+Highly satisfying and fluid fps gameplay
+Detailed world and visuals
+Decent driving experience
+Immersive environment
+Fun sub-plots
+Stealth/fps/car balance

Cons
-Short abrupt story
-Small map for open world game
-Characters not well defined
-Most side quests are just repeat backtracking

Though the overall story and promise of a large open world may have fallen short Rage still manages to satisfy with what it delivers with its well executed fps gameplay and highly detailed and immersive environment. A racing sub-plot is a nice change of pace to play between missions but the side quests feel repetitive as it reused areas already visited. If more time and larger vision was given to this game it could have easily been a large long time classic but this games glimpse of what could have been is still worth the effort.

Short but sweet. I played Rage for the first time in 2020 and I really enjoyed the game. A first I was taken aback by the art style (noise in dark areas) but I learned to appreciate it later. Overall, a very fun game with great shooting.

No I do not recommend this game at all, there is nothing special about the combat nor is the drive racing in this game. The shooting is just your average shooting with nothing special about it. It's repetitive and so boring. The driving mechanics is dull as well. I tried becoming interested in the game but it lost my interest due to the reptitiveness and nothing unique about it. Even Mad Max was a better post apocalaycaptic game type of setting than this.

Rage felt like a poor man's Borderlands that played like Doom 3. My initial experience had me fighting severe frame rate and screen tearing issues. I eventually got it to be playable. The missions didn't feel like they had enough depth, levels were very linear, and the open-world wasteland felt small and cramped. I did get a bit excited when I first encountered the enemies in the Dead City. The mutants felt like a real challenge with their unpredictable movement, although the rest of the enemies felt bland and predictable. The assortment of weaponry were good enough, but also felt underpowered (with the exception of the railgun), often times requiring 2 to 3 sniper bullets to the head to kill a single guy. Nothing stood out as a wow factor.

A game you shouldn't miss out. Yes, I'm aware of the drawbacks, poor performance, uninspired side-quests, and the emptiness of he wasteland. If you look past that and want a solid single-player game with many interesting concepts - characters, various weaponry and gadgets, which use is optional, but extremely rewarding upon use. RAGE takes you away from your standard FPS way of playing, as creative approach is encouraged in every encounter and the AI reacts accordingly. Enemies are voiced perfectly and act as real beings, opposed to random bots who never get hurt, get scared, or flinch when you headshot them. Storyline missions set the mood perfectly as well as the towns you encouner and the locations you explore. If you wonder whether to buy it because of the negative reputation and would give it a chance, it will not dissappoint. Given the fact it is just a few bucks on sale I'll give it a big reccomendation.

This game is ALMOST a big NONO if it weren't for one particular condition:

Steam sale

If you posess at little bit of sanity you will definetly NOT pay the full price for this game; even if at the moment it is low since the game has been released almost 10 years ago, but with that juicy

70% off

tag it's a sweet deal.

Things you will encounter in this game:

1. Almost fast-as-fk-boi combat
2. A myriad of weapons and special kinds of ammo to wreak havoc
3 . Accompanying those weapons and ammo, some sweet tools, like a boomerang or a walking turret
4. Some pretty damn good visuals for a game this old, cortesy of the ID Tech engine.
5. Cars, cars with guns, enemies with cars and enemies with cars with guns
6. Some racing and gambling mini-games

Just really doesn't click for me. I couldn't really think of something I'd list as a strength of the game.

It is... there. If you want to go through a less-interesting Fallout/Mad Max world, this has that. If you want to play a shooter with... passable gameplay, I guess? This has that.

I'm just not sure who I'd recommend the game to, honestly. If you love shooters and have chewed through everything in your inventory, this is available on the cheap.

It's not bad, per se... I just didn't find it enjoyable.

I've came back and see it still has atmosphere, it is still very beautiful and it is a good example of good-old-id style shooting, but with quite relevant cars that would beat some low-tier simulators. What else is needed?:)

It is a fair continuation to Quake and Doom games, a fair deviation that probed some ideas and did implemented quite well. It's not the best game ever, but it is still a great journey.

Rage: an adventure of a tool man

Yes, tool man. In Rage, the protagonist is a tool man without any personal thoughts and characteristics, simply running errands or killing guys on other’s behalf, which make up the whole story. It is not a surprise and I kind of expected this will happen when I picked up Rage, a game developed by id software. Id is not a good or even qualified storyteller as you may have known, if you play several id’s games. Like in Wolfenstein (the reboot one), id needs the help of another studio, Machine Games, with the narrative session. As a game developed by id software solely, Rage is extremely weak in narrative.

However, id is one of the world-class FPS studios, and this time they also did a good job on this game. Rage has well-designed levels that never ask you to repeat your path again, which is very nice. More importantly, it is full of intensive combats. Though they might be exhausting sometimes, they are fast-pace, thrilling, satisfying and super fun and are basically the best experience you can asked for an FPS game. You will need to use all the weapons and rotate them based on the circumstances during combats, upgrading the fun experience to next level. The only two things I am not very satisfied regarding this aspect are that gun swapping and opening optics are too slow compared to the fast-pace combat though I don’t think it is really a big deal, and there is no slot to put the gun acquired in the DLC.

The true bummer of this game is the open world. This is the first-time id made an open world game, and it is bad. The so-called open world is merely a big map connecting all the levels and locations, with just a few contents on it, and they don’t inspire your passion on exploration. Even the side missions are bad, most of which are just use the same levels in the main missions again. There are also racings and several minigames, but they don’t make up the open world experience cause their experiences are plain. That is the real reason why they outsourced the open world of Rage 2 to Avalanche, who in my opinion, makes slightly better but still very bad open world. So for Rage 1, I highly suggest to look at it as a linear game and if it is one, it will be far better.

These are links I found very useful.

Buy the Scorchers DLC with the game, if you decide to buy Rage. Also, ignore the open world things and play it as a linear game, it will be very worthy considering the price.

I remember when Rage came out in 2011, was given mild praise, and promptly faded from memory. After finishing it I really can't work out why - I had so much fun with it. If you mix Mad Max with Borderlands (especially the pseudo cell-shaded aesthetic that keeps the game looking fresh after all this time, although you should expect pretty awful texture pop-in) and fold in a villain that may as well be the Combine from HL2, you end up with Rage. Thankfully the gunplay is better than any of those titles, and the famously realistic and unpredictable Rage AI reactions (where bullet impacts send enemies sprawling, and melee AI uses terrain to move erratically) made most fights a treat - and forced you to use your entire arsenal of weapons and gadgets to survive. Speaking of which, the quirky combat gadgets and minigames give Rage it's own personality, much like Borderlands. The whole thing feels strangely like an indie open-world game: while you do have an overworld, you aren't encouraged to explore it beyond the scope of story missions (a story which itself feels rather small and linear), and the ride is over within 15 hours or so.

A final word about the level design, which is excellent - Dead City is one of the best horror levels I've ever played. Amongst a sea of post-apocalypse games, Rage stands out. Heartily recommended.

Rage is offering something new on a technical level and this alone makes it worth experiencing. The textures in this game unlike in any other game before it, are painted, so every location is absolutely unique. There are other titles using this tech, but Rage does it to the highest extent.

Good:
-enemy reactions to being shot
-arsenal of weapons and combat items (mini combat bots, turrets, bladed boomerangs etc.)
-GRAPHICS (unique and artistically captivating environments, they are very calming)

Bad:
-dialogue is boring mostly
-racing is boring
-technical problems (solvable)
-lack of moving objects in the enviroments

I am a big fan of this game. I rarely find games like Rage, it is special.

Have you heard of the post-apocalypse? I doubt it, it's not that popular.

From the famed developer “id software” of DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein and the very relevant Commander Keen comes RAGE. You'll play as Nicholas Raine; which was news to me, as the character is just about as silent as Gordon Freeman.

You'll hear this compared to Mad Max, Fallout, maybe a bit of Borderlands. But, NO!

This is more akin to Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, inside the id Tech 5 engine.
At least in the town of Wellspring. (Which is most of the game.)

RAGE is a semi-open world, vaguely horror-esque FPS game with a heavy influence on combat racing.

The game is a like a big steamy bowl of missed opportunity.

The gunplay is amazing. The guns varied. The way the mutants traverse the environment seems extremely unique. I've still not truly seen a game match the fluidity as the mutants jump into a door frame, scream, somersault out and then jump onto a ceiling pipe, crawl some way, then backflip off just to smash you with a club. All while trying to avoid your shots. And multiple mutants are doing this simultaneously! When they react to your shots, their momentum carries as they hold their hands over the new hole in their face. Mutant fights are probably my favorite aspect of the game.

You can craft things like lock grinders to find secret areas, you can build RC cars strapped with explosives, you can build sentry guns [strike]and kill all the antlions in Nova Prospekt[/strike], you can even craft wingsticks — the greatest weapon in video games. (The glaive from Dark Sector doesn't count.) What is basically a frisbee/boomerang with blades on it, becomes one of the most fun sub-weapons to use in conjunction with another. I threw a wingstick at a mutant and he somersaulted under it, upon completing his somersault, I blasted him in the face with my shotgun as he rose. It was very satisfying.

You're also able to use other types of ammo. For example, the crossbow has electro bolts, which can be shot into water and used to electrocute those unfortunate enough to have been thirsty at that moment. The Splicers in Rapture are shook, I'm sure.

All being said, there is a lot lacking in the game.

The semi world open leaves little to explore, and the world is rife with annoying bandits trying to destroy your nice, well-earned vehicle. The races are okay, but their only purpose is to upgrade them for the “real world” as to survive bandit attacks and get some extra money — car upgrades use a separate currency.

The characters have the longest delivery of lines in the world, which is odd. Because the game has some legends doing the VO. Nolan North, Phil Lamarr, Paul Eiding, Tara Strong, John Goodman. Unfortunately, they take so long delivering their lines, once you accept their mission, the dialogue gets cut off, never to be heard again. The world, while interesting, still lacks a really specific feeling in tonality.

Story tropes: Aren't people in the post-apocalypse supposed to be deceitful?

Some of this part may get spoiler-y. So don't read this part if you don't want spoilers! However, I feel it's an important note. As an Ark Survivor, thrown into a world that isn't at all the one they left behind. Don't you'd think someone would find some lucrative opportunity regarding the character's naivety?
The “Authority” and Bandits are immediately said to be bad news. But, the character never thinks that the person that rescued them to have ulterior motives. He doesn't even question the Mutant Bash TV proprietor. Since when is a gameshow about killing mutants wholesome?
Leading away from this topic, the game also ends rather abruptly. It's a huge cliffhanger. Which wouldn't be as bad if if the character had some resolution. Or at least, the state of the world was told to the player. But, it's not. It implies something, but that's it. That being said, the game is still worth your time to play.

THE GIST:
It's a great game. But, it could have been much better. And I think that's where a lot of original disappointment with the game comes from.
