+Sale-Preis: Absolut TOP, ganz klare Empfehlung.
GESAMTWERTUNG:
1. Zum Normalpreis: 8/10, klare Empfehlung.
2. Im Sale: 9/10, ganz klare Empfehlung.
[All das hier ist MEINE Meinung, falls ihr was anders seht, bin ich offen für sachliche, konstruktive Kritik oder Verbesserungsvorschläge.]

Visuals are nice but performance is lacking for what you get, reflections and shadows cost far too much in fps for what you get.
There are better adventure games out there and far better puzzle games.

Edit: Just want to add that the note taking system is the best I've ever used. You can store pictures of anything in the notebook and add your own notes. It makes solving the puzzles much easier with less legwork.

Pros - the game has a good, strong length, most of its puzzles are well designed and fairly balanced, and the overall progression through the game is mostly smooth. Particularly of note is how the game balances introducing new mechanics against reusing old ones. While mostly adhering to the old Myst formula of every puzzle being unique, there are a few puzzle components and mechanics that keep coming back in different ways, rewarding the player for learning and remembering but still staying fresh over what was for me about 14 hours of content. That's worth commending.
Cons - In terms of design, there were a few things that frustrated me. The game has a notebook function that ends up being clunky and inconvenient - you're better off just keeping an actual physical notebook in almost all cases. Also, the game is very linear - at any given moment in the game, there is almost always only one puzzle that needs to be solved. This leads to three downsides - one, if you miss an interactive object like a lever or button, the game grinds to a halt and you just have nothing to do until you revisit every location and find it; two, if you are stuck on a puzzle, you can't go to another area and work on something else while mulling it over, you're just stuck with nowhere to go and nothing to do; three, these two experiences are sometimes difficult to tell from one another. If you do get stuck, is it because there's a puzzle you haven't solved, or is it because you missed an interaction that should have been obvious? All of this detracts from exploration - because the game is so linear, even as new areas open up, you're always laser focused on the one thing that will progress the game forward. You're never just wandering about for the sake of it. The world feels much more constructed and artificial. This feeds into my second criticism - the story is mediocre, and plays second fiddle to mechanics. The whole game is one big, elaborate escape-the-room, and every attempt it makes to convince you that there's more at stake here falls flat when you are never encouraged to look at this world as anything but a collection of puzzles to be solved. The world building is shallow and ultimately only serves to excuse all of the gamified aspects of the environment.
Ultimately, these complaints are minor. This is a puzzle game, and as a puzzle game, it is successful. Its puzzles are fun, strike a good balance in terms of both challenge and novelty, and there are a lot of them, spread out over an engaging difficulty curve. It is a good game. But, with a few tweaks to design and story, it could have been great.

Tbh, they should've just gotten a beta group or called Annapurna to get storytelling help. Not much of the story was relatable, and I didn't care about the characters. The ending didn't help that situation. Still a good puzzle game though!

[MINOR SPOILER] The designers set themselves up for an ending on which they could not deliver - the player never sees the consequences of their actions, and this is a little disappointing.
Overall, a fun and immersive experience.

Sometimes when I saw the puzzle I knew that it would be easier and more interesting to brute force it instead of actually solving it. Also, the ending of the game is just silly. It is pretentious, as if you would ruin civilization, but it doesn't feel like it. I was not involved at all. After somewhere half of the game it stops feeling immersive and you staring to notice that some puzzles even designed in such a way that would require a lot of back and forth running for no reason. Tasks start being more and more annoying not because they are hard to solve but because you already know how to find solution and you also know that the process of finding will be tedious. Oh, and yes, puzzles became even more stupid when you realize that the game is trying to tell you a story about some sort of a genius, who build all the machines on the island and then asks you to find a solution for a match 4 game or to align the doors in a row so you can go through them. facepalm.jpg

I'm not one to review allot of games but I felt like it deserved it.
This is not a game you spend an afternoon completing or some normal puzzle game. Although, there are clues to everything you will need to get through to the next stages. It will require a very keen eye to not use a guide or google a certain puzzle. I do not have such an eye, but nonetheless I tried my own on every single puzzle. The voice acting, the notes, the puzzles I thought were all fantastic. The graphics are stunning however the scene becomes somewhat grey at times, but I may just be too well indulged in the tasks. I often had to sleep on certain puzzles and it takes quite the mental gymnastics at times. This game is like none other I have played and was definitely worth the time and six dollars I spent on it. Is it worth $24.99, not really. Wait for a sale or keep it on the wish-list. I see allot of comments about the controls and although it is troubling in the start it makes sense on allot of the puzzles you will be doing later on. As for the randomness, it is not a straight forward game, like stated it will take mental gymnastics and probably multiple days to finish. You know its troubling when you are 6 hours in and thinking you are about to finish but then look up a guide 2 hours long and are only half way through it. Hard but interesting.

The only criticism I can offer is that this game does feature some pick-up-and-use items, which inevitably leads to a few convoluted solutions. Luckily they aren't too prevalent and none of them are particularly egregious, and it manages to avoid pixel hunting that plagues a lot of point-and-clicks.
Highly, highly recommended for puzzle lovers.

Story is OK, nothing crazy.
Most of the puzzles can be solved following logic, it's pretty rewarding that way. That said, there are a couple weak parts in which you can only find solutions by guessing or looking for stuff you missed, this without any indication or hint on what to do next. Once you manage to get past this part, following logic will again be your priority.

The puzzles:
- imo most challenging in the early-mid game, much quicker (and easier) by the end
- some puzzles take time AND are rewarding, others just take time and you may find yourself wondering why you're running back and forth so much, don't worry you're supposed to
- the crystals are the driving mechanic, but the types of puzzles you are solving should feel relatively familiar
- linear, typically need to solve one puzzle at a time to unlock the next one
- accessibility: must be able to see colors and hear
- notepad mechanic is super helpful - allows in-game screenshots of maps/notes so you don't have to write everything down
The story (avoiding any spoilers):
- story is mostly told through letters from a previous inhabitant
- linear, becomes more compelling as you get deeper since you know so little at the beginning
- becomes the focus of the game in later stages
- shouldn't be more than 20 hours, likely much closer to 10 depending on how quickly you figure out what you need to be doing
- probably not worth a 2nd play-through unless you want the achievements
The world:
- map is appropriately sized with enough variety for new areas to feel truly novel, plus some surprises
- Myst-like. Like, a lot.
- tranquil music that changes based on location. Really grew on me towards the end but that may just be because I was sick of what the same tune so often in the early game
Worth noting - NO micro-transactions or other in-game purchases. You get the full game when you buy it (as you should).
In conclusion, I'm glad I bought it! I would recommend to any fan of puzzle games, particularly those who enjoy psychological/existential narratives.

Obviously, everyone is different when it comes to puzzles. So far nothing has been out of the ordinary. I will usually use a guide if I really need to, but things have been fairly logical so far. I saw one review compare it to both Talos and Witness, and while yes you solve puzzles in each of these games, they couldn't be any more different really. Talos is more like a Portal game in a different universe. Witness is its own invocation of self-contained grid puzzles that hint at a greater but more obscure epiphany of human intellect. It doesn't quite get there in the narrative though. Quern is like an old school Riven sequel, and I love it for that even when it's not quite as innovative as the other two. There really isn't much like this game out there, and I would choose any of these games in the puzzle genre depending on what you want to do.
I appreciate the game for taking some risks but also sticking to the aesthetic and charm of old school foundations. It renews that sense of wonder we got as children in the time of Myst and its sequels and successors. Definitely a dev to look out for in the future.

That's also my one and only complaint about this game: You do need to be clever and to start thinking a certain way, and it IS easy to miss something that is essential to progression in the game. Which can and will no doubt lead to a couple of hourly long periods spent retreading steps to see whether you have somehow missed something somewhere. And for me those parts, especially when it becomes an hourly long thing, can make me feel extremely frustrated.
Everything else about this game though is excellent and I hope that they will make more of this type of game because creating good puzzles is not easy and I feel like these puzzles were striking the right chord.

Harness the power of crystals... and patience
Quern: Undying Thoughts is in many ways a spiritual successor to games like Myst and Riven, and unapologetically leans into the mystery-puzzle genre. Like Myst and Riven, the story in Quern takes a secondary roll that supplements the complex, interactive world that is packed full of content for the player to explore and uncover.
I suppose the most important, or rather, most engaging mechanic from these kinds of games are the puzzles. The puzzles imo are very satisfying, and at many times require multiple angles of analysis. There will be times where you will have to meditate on a puzzle for several minutes or even hours. Games like these tend to excel in this department because the puzzles always feel tactile and hyper-interactive (pulling levers, pushing buttons, moving objects, manipulating the enviornment, etc.). Of course there are some duds, but overall I thought the majority of the puzzles were very engaging -- I especially thought the
volume soundwave crystal matching
puzzle was very creative.
Pros
- Hyper-interactive and engaging puzzles
- Interesting and dynamic world to explore
- High-fidelity modern graphics
- Immersive sound design
- Ambient music
- Interesting story
Cons
- A few puzzles are repetitive and unintuitive
FINAL SCORE: 9/10

All of the actual puzzles I was able to solve, however I missed (overlooked/forgot) e.g. a switch to turn on the mechanical room power. I feel now sorry for being impatient with myself and having looked it up.
Anyway, for me the best game (discovered and started it in 2020) of this year.

+ Excellent Story
+ Two endings
+ Fantastic graphics
+ Good sound
+ Very good voice over/narration - esp for a small title
+ Music is very good, tho it can get a bit repetitive
+ All achievements work. One did trigger for me prematurely for some reason.
- The puzzles were extremely difficult. At least for me. I'd have got little enjoyment without guides. Props to the folks who have the logic ability to figure them out and then to share what they find. I really enjoyed this title because of them.

You start an island, have various puzzles to solve to progress, and yeah, it's fun. Puzzles are challenging and diverse. Make you think in different ways but rarely obtuse. Only needed walkthrough for a single puzzle and even then I wished I had figured it out myself. Plot and characters are low key but move things along. Overall, fun and challenging series of puzzles in a nice environment that keeps your mind sharp.

10/10, great GREAT soundtrack too, very familiar and non-intrusive, but still manages to be catchy and endearing. Highly recommend playing this game without spoiling anything, the puzzles are not too difficult if you step away for a while and use the 'hint' function on each item in the inventory.

The puzzles were a little on the obscure side at times, but not unfair and were satisfying to solve. I needed to take notes and use Excel a few times to solve them more easily (think matrices). In terms of difficulty, I'd say it's harder than Obduction and less difficult than The Witness.
The only real downside in my opinion is the island was a bit drab, especially relative to Obduction and The Witness. The puzzles make it worth exploring, but it's not an environment I'd be inclined to explore purely for exploration's sake.
