Über das Spiel
Quake II RTX is fully ray-traced and includes the 3 levels from the original shareware distribution.
Game Description
Shortly after landing on an alien surface, you learn that hundreds of your men have been reduced to just a few. Now you must fight your way through heavily fortified military installations, lower the city's defenses and shut down the enemy's war machine. Only then will the fate of humanity be known.
About Quake II RTX
Quake II RTX builds on the work of Christoph Schied and the team at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, who added ray tracing to Quake II to create Q2VKPT (in turn building upon the Q2PRO code base). NVIDIA has introduced new path-traced visual effects, has improved texturing, and has made dozens of other changes and improvements, resulting in an experience that rivals games created today, and pushes your RTX hardware to the limit.

Läuft also wirklich gut!

Not much to say here. Quake 2 is one of the best shooters ever made, and the addition of ray-tracing is unique and impressive here.
The only caveat is that it significantly impacts the original art style - terrifying crimson skies now become more Earth-like yellow-to-orange sunsets. You can change the time of day and sun orientation as you wish (one of the perks of RTX, to be sure), but nothing matches the original art design. Of course, Q2's art design was nothing to write home about... but taking that and diluting it is not exactly improving upon the visual formulae.
Point is - it's a great experiment, worth trying out; a solid benchmark for your ray-tracing capable GPU (AMD GPUs are also supported) and a very fun romp if you want to see Q2 in a different light (literally!)

Summary
Zitat:
This special release of Quake II includes the 3 shareware levels, but with extensively reworked graphics and codebase to make use of Nvidia's ray-tracing technology in their contemporary GeForce RTX 20 series of graphics cards. Quake II RTX is a cutting-edge, ray-traced reimagining of id software’s old school classic, by NVIDIA’s Lightspeed Studios. Global lighting effects, including realistic reflections, refraction, shadows, ambient occlusion and global illumination are a result of the path-traced simulation of light.

Overall the game looked quite nice, though the realistic lighting and old as hell models definitely made for a odd visual style. As a tech demo it's interesting, but that's about it.

Any other game with ray tracing will use a combination of rasterization and ray tracing to render the in game world, because it’s the only way current hardware is able to play newer games at double digit framerates. In the case of Quake 2, a more than 20 year old game, path tracing rendering becomes a possibility. Because of this, Quake 2 RTX is the best showcase of raytracing that exists at the moment.
An Nvidia RTX card or AMD equivalent are mandatory to play it. Any other GPU won’t be able to run at an acceptable framerate, so better not even try it.
Now, Quake 2 wasn’t originally made with ray tracing in mind, so moding it to add ray tracing changes the way it feels compared to vanilla Quake 2. Often times the game is either much brighter or much darker than the original. If you are a purist, this will be a deal breaker and I wouldn’t recommend you try it, as you’ll most likely just see the disadvantages.
Fortunately for me I’m not a purist, in fact testing ray tracing was what pushed me to play Quake 2 for the first time, and I must say I really liked the game. Tried it for the novelty, finished it because I ended up enjoying Quake 2.
As a side note, this version of the game unfortunately shows how far we are from full path tracing games. The standard of 1080p@60 fps on gaming PCs, or even higher resolution and framerate on high end PCs, is not possible to achieve on this old game. We are on the second generation of RTX cards, will we need another 20 years for path tracing to become the standard rendering technique in games? Only time will tell, but in the meantime this is what we can get.
If you are able to play it with a good enough resolution and framerate, then I’d recommend to least try the demo to satisfy the curiosity of how ray tracing change how a game looks. It’s funny how a game from the past can give us a glimpse of the future.

22 years later and here I am again, Looking at the future with the same giddy excitement I had as a kid.

Original resolution set to 4K. Minimum resolution scaling set to 60% with target FPS set to 70fps.
Majority of the game runs at 63% resolution for a stable 73fps, so that's essentially 1440p+ on a 3080 with rarely hardly any notable differences in visual quality.
Unreal 1 with RTX. Make it happen.

This is demo with RTX support looks nice, but still feels like back then.
If you own/buy Quake 2 youll get whole game with RTX support.
Every fps veteran knows this is good game so im not gonna even review it.
P.S. You obviously need RTX graphics card for this. Not working with GTX cards.

Check the graphic settings before starting! Not joking! I'm running a 2070 RTX Super, and like most users with similar builds I was getting roughly 25 FPS on startup in game. After roughly 30 minutes of gameplay I decided to check the graphic options for a good laugh. That's when I realized the game by default was trying to push a 4k resolution! Crazier still, for some reason, my old ass 8 year plus 1920*1080 60Hz monitor allowed all this to happen without somehow giving itself an aneurysm. Needless to say once I set the specs to match my monitor I got a solid 60 FPS across the board while playing.
Other than that I mean it's Quake 2. You've either played it, lived under a rock, or you're super young. lol

RTX On: 80-100fps
I am using a RTX 2070 and a Ryzen 5 3600
Pretty kewl tbh.
And to everyone complaining that their game is running like crap and you don't have an RTX GPU, shut up, what do you expect? It literally has 'RTX' in the title, also how are you guys getting 45fps with 2080s? I have a 2070 and I am getting 80fps average.

RTX OFF: 1000+ FPS
RTX ON: low 60s FPS (lowest dip was to 57 FPS for a brief moment in combat)
Does look a bit better tho
Edit: I found a way to increase the framerate; in Video settings go to resolution scaling settings and turn on dynamic resolution scaling. That bumped me up from 40-60 FPS to a constant 60 FPS.

+ Lots of weapons. All of them are fun to use.
+ Decent number of enemy types. It feels like every level has at least one or two new enemies.
+ The level design is decent. I played this alongside Turok 2, and the contrast was stark. I was so grateful that Quake II's level design isn't brutally obtuse.
+ Fun, the way games used to be. You move quickly, you don't have to watch animations, guns fire really fast, you don't have to reload. Nothing ever gets between you and having a good time.
+ Game looks good, especially with the RTX enhancements.
- Thanks to the raytracing, you'll probably be able to run it at 40fps max. It's not too distracting, though.
- You can't play the expansions with this version of the game.
All in all, definitely worth a purchase, especially if you're in the mood for a classic FPS that still holds up today.

I'm playing this with an Asus 1080Ti Strix OC gaming card. I might not be getting the full experience because to get a playable framerate I have to crank things way down to 800x600 or so. I avg about 40 fps there. But you know, that's about what my experience was when this was new and I was in college anyway.
I can't *not* recommend Quake 2. But that's more because of what it means to me personally. It's a good time. Worth the $5. You'll get more out of this than a big mac at McDonalds, you know?

Edit: If you are one of the missinformed people, that didn't read the Minimum system requirements, the 1080ti does a horrible job with ray tracing, so does the 1660ti. Because they have no ray tracingcores.
This game does need the Ray tracing cores to run. Keep that in mind before making a review.
Comparison:
1080ti or 1660ti - 15 or so FPS
RTX 2060 SUPER - 40-44 fps (4k = 13fps)

Just make sure you download the original music (google it) as Quake 2 on Steam comes without it.
The RTX version has full support for music though;)
Also, play the demo, but buy the full game after (it's less than 4£ now). Totally worth it!

It runs well I suppose but, my god IT'S SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL!
The water effects, the lighting, the reflections all amazing and it made me incredibly immersed in a two decade old game. The game with my RTX 2070 ran at a constant 30 FPS which is actually not too shabby. I expected way worse results. Of course, performance differs on what card you have.
I highly suggest if you have Quake II or if you want to try the shareware version and have an RTX Card to try this out. It looks bloody amazing and it's free! It's an amazing looking game and it runs okay too! I highly recommend this version to fans of the vanilla Quake II and RTX Fanatics.

RTX 2070 can do this at 50-70fps @ 1080p : 30ish @ 1440p : Slide Show at 4k.
Kinda sad tho, poster child here for Raytracing but the game is from the late 90's very low poly and texture usage is almost zero by today's standards, and it utterly struggles to run it, on a GPU with 10's of billions of transistors.

2000. I visit computer clubs every week to endure 12-hour Quake II deathmatch marathons.
2001. My classmate and I decide to settle a feud via a duel at Q2DM1. Whoever wins gets to date a particular girl we both liked. I won 21 - -2, that girl decided to date some other guy though. Well, at least I won.
2020. I am thinking to myself: If anyone told me back in 1998 that:
1) I would still play this game
2) It would still put my gaming PC on its knees
I would have never believed.
Well, little did I know. I do play it, and my RTX 2060 can barely spit 60 FPS out of its guts.
A true masterpiece.
