When I first started playing I had doubts about the champion system but after playing enough hours and the game receiving a handful of balance updates over the years I can say the developers are doing a great job keeping everything balanced and remaining faithful to Quake and its original design while also keeping the skill ceiling high without too much unneeded complexity.
One major concern of mine is the apparent lack of a motivated player base as well as the very high skill level of remaining players which may dissuade newcomers from sticking around and learning the game. (The ranked competitive modes do a good job at keeping games fair but in my experience the casual gamemodes tend to end up being blowouts)
But regardless, the game is free to play so I would like to encourage anybody reading this to give the game a chance and see if you get hooked like I did! I believe it's worth investing the time into.

Which really sucks, seeing as the market for arena shooters is drier than every woman when you try to bend their ear about arena shooters.
For once I can't blame my toaster of a laptop for how awfully this runs. Somehow still in early access? Dead playerbase (or soon to be dead if they played Quake III Arena at launch (did you take your meds, gramps?))? No server browser???? Naw bro, get on it Bethesda
If you spent money on this, my condolences, and you should be allowed to steal something from steam's content library.

Well, that's the online multiplayer PvP dilemma, and it will never change. NEVER.
Besides that, it is a good looking game that runs fast and well, with many funny characters to choose from, each with it's own pros and cons. I prefer Sorlag, mostly because she is so damn cute.
It's free to play so if you want all the goodies you have to play and play a lot, or you can buy it if you prefer all available at once, just like I did.

What a genuine shame too, I absolutely loved playing this game a few years ago, one of my favorite modern arena shooters flaws and all. But I guess something changed in the year or two since I last played it, and I can't get back in now.
I know that the playerbase was slowly falling off the last time I played, and I imagine it's only continued to sink and will continue to do so unless id and Bethesda can get their collective crap sorted.

The point of duels is to see who the best player is, with all other things being equal. Aim, movement, map control, item control, mind games, knowing when to push or back up - all of these elements come together in a great showing of pure skill. But now add to that an element of randomness in champion ability. Maybe you have a different speed, or health and armor amount, maybe you can see through walls, or have a zipline, or teleporting orb, or a fireball, or a turret, or a health boost, or a healing totem, and so on. These variables go directly against what Quake stands for and have no place in competitive 1v1, even 2v2, and especially not in Esports. I’m sure all the hardcore fans would agree with this.
Now it’s good that they tried something new and it may even be preferable for casual play, I applaud that. The distinction is in competitive duels. They should have added a separate mode where these champions and their abilities are disabled. If they didn’t want to have it initially, they could have introduced it once the newcomers stopped playing, they could do it even now. Why not try something new, you’ve got nothing to lose at this point.
Another set of issues is with the performance, FPS drops, server lag, net code, matchmaking times, audio issues, and so on. Yet the game is still getting updates every now and then: new maps, new skins, hero and weapon balancing. The priorities should be put on fixing the glaring core gameplay issues instead of the new content.
It will be interesting to see if Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda will have any impact on this franchise, time will tell. But let’s face it, Quake is never going to be the next big game. Though it will always have a niche and super passionate small community. The attempt at attracting casual players fell through and now the focus should be put on the hardcore and loyal Quakers that are still playing. Do whatever it is they are requesting and maybe, just maybe, this game can have a 2nd life. Hey, maybe it can even finally come out of Early Access at some point.

Compared to all other Quake titles this one lacks art and gameplay direction for:
Character design - it is a wild mix of different characters from various titles. Visually they just do not fit together well. I only care for Visor. The other characters vary from okay for Anarki, Slash, Doom and Sorlag to forgettable for the rest of the gang. Rangers' face is cringeworthy or outright the most ugly video game character I have seen in ages.
Weapon design - I am missing that hard punch from previous titles. Where is that impact feeling when you are hitting your foes? Neither does it give you enough feedback visually, by audio and physically when getting hit. Those weapons themselves are lacking distinguishable features, color schemes and icons. I have to look twice to identify some of the weapons when I find them on the floor. They had a way better design 20 years ago.
UI - the whole menu and user interaction is not good. Starting from the annoying save button within the settings menu to how the main finding and joining matches is just a mediocre implementation. Even that awful respawn button keeps me hammering space all the time.
Monetization: While I think it is okay to get money for skins and visual items, if you copy from other titles you should copy the good parts. Looking at the previous season and current season Battle Pass, I am not wanting any single item from that list of earnable skins or items.
So frankly I am having a match of Instagib, TDM or CTF from time to time just for the sole reason of playing an arena shooter.

Quake is supposed to be about speed and with the amount of lag their bad netcode produces seasoned Quake strafe jumpers will feel like they're walking in heavy mud even with Visor. And players striving for accuracy will just get frustrated to see that all their direct shots inflict ZERO damage on their opponents because the server didn't deem your direct shots to exist at all.
Hey I'm willing to get killed through walls IF all my direct shots also get counted, but I get the worst of both worlds with QC, I have to take getting killed when under cover while also seeing my shots do zero damage. Which sane developer deems this acceptable UX??
The lead designer and corporate managers calling the shots have no idea what they're doing. They ruined a perfectly viable Quake. Maybe they should manage a lemonade stand instead.
Also the last battlepass is a steaming pile of garbage.

It has lots of things going good for it, but there are also problems with the game. Bad optimization, lots of FPS drops, occasional potato servers and more.
I really wish this game had more people playing it. It barely passes the 550 players mark. It is mostly populated by Quake veterans that want to enjoy some good arena shooter. Even though 550 players doesn't sound that great, 90% of the time you won't sit more than 1-2 minutes looking for a match.
I recommend this game to everyone that is into fast paced FPS games.

Game looks stunning and runs butter smooth on ultra-settings (105FPS Avg., RX570 8GB, Ryzen 5 1600X, 16GB 3200Mhz RAM).
You pay for this performance with painfully long loading times: 1 minute for game start, 45 seconds for loading a map (Can be reduced to 20 seconds by choosing low settings) -> Highly unfitting for a fast paced arena shooter.
Add to this the fact that there is no possibility for custom content and that the game is basically dead so you either play training matches against bots (which are actually not bad!) or you add even more waiting time by queing against the few human players and getting rekt.
This begs the question: Why play this when you can just start up Quake Live or UT04?
Because you want to complete daily challenges and grind up a meaningless battlepass, just like the little dopamine addicted sucker you are!

Game controls well for a Quake game, Not too bothered by the player abilities however wish there was matchmaking a for classic mode where they are all turned off(Only in custom games) and Game looks + sounds good.
Getting a game as a Aussie Player however has been rare due to the seemingly low player population. In fact, I wrote this review while I was waiting for a game and still nothing for the past 15 minutes. Game crashed once however supposedly others experience them more often.
If you must play this, prepare to play custom games with friends or Bot matches as getting a game with randoms seems to be unlikely. And with the low player population, I don't see myself opening my wallet for any of the cosmetics as it's be a waste of money to get any of them for a game where I can barely find a online match. And with the low player population, it makes you wonder how long before Bethesda pulls the plug on the servers...
At least the game is free to play.
Edit: Still no luck finding any more public games and noticing many things that are absent. No gibbing unless there is a setting that enables it, less weapons than Q3 (Where the hell is the BFG), less maps and only a max of 8 players in a map.

Also, the hit registry is terrible at times, which is unacceptable for this type of game where every small detail matters against an equally skilled opponent. It often makes the game feel very random and leads to frustration. For example: sometimes rockets will just do no or very little damage even though it literally lands right next to them on a flat surface. Even pros such as Rapha, who is ranked #1 player in the world, constantly complain about this game's technical shortcomings. Audio issues are common to the point where sometimes you can't hear someone strafe jumping towards you.
This game is also missing so many features which hurts the community aspect. No server browser, no requeuing with the same opponents after a match ends or staying in the server, no modding, no map making. It's also missing basic things such as toggle zoom despite people asking for it for years.
The only reason why this game can be worth playing is because it's the most played arena FPS at the moment but it has been a letdown for many people and has only very slowly gradually improved over the course of multiple years. It's fun for a while but eventually the issues become just too hard to ignore and you'll hardly want to play much anymore or if at all.

Because there is a Duel mode here.
A Duel is not just a 1v1 deathmatch. It has a great strategic depth.
It's not enough to just aim precisely. You need to know the map well, keep an advantageous position (for attack and retreat), move effectively, start fights when you have an advantage, and collect resources on the map before your opponent take them. You need to plan your game a few steps ahead. Like in a chess.
But in addition, you need to predict the actions of the enemy, his position and resources.
Now imagine, you are fighting with someone. You don't know him and he doesn't know you. You both have only ten minutes to get to know each other, to learn the opponent's playstyle, to learn how he acts, how he reacts to your actions. You need to get into his head, to understand what he is thinking, to feel what he is feeling. To learn what kind of person he is. Find his strengths and weaknesses.
And in the end, use this information to destroy him.
Quake Duel is the deepest type of interpersonal interaction that games can have. This is where soul contact takes place..
Just joking :3
Quake is a fun fast paced shooter with a cool movement! Try it!

This could be considered a Quake III remaster with some extra content typical of these modern free-to-plays. It’s a really fast-paced shooter with great emphasis on agility. It utilizes exactly the same mechanics as Quake III Arena.
I love the design of the locations, the background music and the general feel of the game. It’s just like old times – but better.
Although I’m terrible at it and I get fragged seconds after spawning, this game is just AWESOME.

It IS NOT A CS:GO, it is an ARENA SHOOTER. It is kind a funny when people say that CS:GO gives you a SKILL . Yes it does, but not in general. If you want see what is real accuracy, start playing osu! In CS:GO, most people just play 4-6 weapons (DE, AWP, M4/M4A1-S, P90 and of course the our favorite, THE LEGEND, AK-47) and had small pool of maps (Mirage, Inferno, Cache, Nuke and spam 25/8 of Dust 2). IF you think that playing as CT, holding B site on Dust 2 with M4/P90 is SKILL, then sorry man, you should not play this game. Same story with AWP A site or long = just waiting for easiest and free kill. Lets not forget about CS:GO is now free to play, so pretty much you can have player with new Steam account, level 3 and already on top of the score board with highest amount of kills. Basically it is his Xth account or software user.
In QC you literally can carry game. Just move ALL THE TIME and pick up stuff. And you can not just camp in the corner waiting for a enemy, holding position and can not just spray a gun for getting random headshot . You need to be
FAST AS FUCK BOOOOIIIII!!!
Joke aside, but really - only movement and accuracy matter. Oh no, this man is retarded. How can you forget about knowledge of map, timings and champions with different abilities.
Sure thing you need to know that, but it does automatically. If you are accurate and not fast - you are DEAD. AND if you are fast and can not hit SHIT - you are just a harmless BOT and DEAD))

If you're willing to stick with it for a few dozen hours to learn the maps, item spawns, character abilities and improve your aim then you'll likely have a great time. Till then you're going to have a pretty miserable experience. I personally couldn't get into the game due to jumping on a couple of years too late but since it's free to play you've got nothing to lose by giving it a go and deciding for yourself.
Cautiously recommended since it's free.

It reminds me greatly of an old Q3 mod called Generations Arena by Wirehead Studios and while I wish they'd gone more that route, what we have is really appealing to me. As someone who's really been in to duels since QW (note: I'm not very good, I just enjoy the strategic side) -- the champion selection really adds an extra layer.
My only wish is that they'd add proper ban/pick phases to ranked as we see in QPL and integrate this in to the client, as it really is an interesting layer on top of a great formula. But I would still kinda like the 100/0 stacks universal to everyone :-)

Arena shooters never needed abilities or ultimates. Arena shooters also never needed to lack a dedicated server browser.
Having to wait to get into a match, wait to load in, wait for the game to end, then wait for match making to find you another game rather than jump in a server and play as long as you want is just lame.
A real shame since the shortcomings of this makes it less likely that we may ever see a modern Quake game again.

It's basically Quake 3, but with modern graphics, and heroes. Yeah, it's a hero shooter. Big whoop. It's an interesting concept and I like it.
The gameplay is solid, the Super Shotgun feels good, and so does the movement. Some aspects such as B-hopping, air-strafing and whatnot are locked to certain characters, but you can just main em.
The game is heavily unoptimized, even on the lowest settings. I hope this game will come out of early access with better optimization (which I won't be surprised if it never happens, damn you Bethesda.)
Overall, I do suggest this game. Sorlag best girl.

But I you quickly found from 30 min lobby wait times not being able to find a single person (Located in Australia) to multiple Reddit posts saying it's been abandoned for years I'd say unless you've got some friends you wanna go up against or you're happy playing limited modes with CPU it ain't worth it.

The feeling is completely different (and in my opinion is much worse than UT), starting from the movement mechanics, to end to the graphic of the very first UT chapters (not that it matters in this game, but still...). Also, the weapons are not very unique and very well designed.
But as a plus point, it's F2P.
You can try it, it won't hurt you, but not a game I would play in my spare time. I still prefer UT. :)

The art direction is almost spotless, really reminiscent of Quake 3 Arena of course; the maps are heavily detailed and filled to the brim with personality and atmosphere, and yet they are easy enough to traverse quickly while hopping around. The sound design is great and the music is absolutely amazing. Even more importantly, the core gameplay is solid, the gunfight is exemplar, responsive and fun, and the classes add an interesting twist to the classic Quake formula without feeling too bloated.
Now my problem with this game stems from everything that's not in it and that prevents it for being massively played. The lack of third party map support, workshop integration, an actual server browser and the ability to host dedicated servers make or break the communities of game like this, and the intent to monetize everything at some point or another is clear from the get go. All these missing elements are what is killing the player base of what should have been a memorable title. The lack of meaningful updates makes it feel like the game has been abandoned before it even came out.
It's a shame, but I'm still willing to give it a go every once in a while to see the direction set the dev team.

As a warning, there's a nonsensical system of cosmetic character customization in this game. It locks weapon skins - the only thing you'll be able to see for 95% of the game - behind currency that can only be bought with real money. It also broke for me, refusing to provide me with daily challenges, so I'm not sure if I'm missing something here. I would suggest simply buying the heroes with in game currency or money and then ignoring the whole progression system.
It's not a very well thought out game as a whole but there's not much to choose from right now in terms of arena shooters unfortunately.

When it came out, it was unbalanced, unoptimized, buggy, and the duel format sucked. At this point the game is fantastic, with classic style time limit duel, lots of game modes, cool cosmetics, better optimization, and better quality of life.
Still, it's quake with abilities.
If you are a quake purist, you won't like the abilities. If you are coming from games like Overwatch, the classic Quake-style gameplay will be overwhelming for you. But if you can find a balance and get into the groove of the game, it's like nothing else out there. If you can get comfortable with the game, you'll be hooked for life.

Movement is crucial, it's important to learn how to bunny-hop to maintain high movement speed, while remaining a tougher target to kill. It's also important to learn how to rocket-jump and nail-gun wall-jump, but maybe the latter is more towards the higher end of the learning curve than others.
Once you get these things down the game feels awesome to play and variety of characters and unique abilities are good to learn and try.
I recommend this a lot if you're bored from more modern shooters and also looking to rekindle that arena shooter flame you might have missed in the past.

The downside of the current build is that players who experience lag are unable to play with bots offline. It's possible to play with bots that behave like real players but those bots will lag too.

Ok, put a new password, now the game should work, i guess?
Guess what? Unavaiable services, server offline and blabla...
Come on Bethesda, do you really need to screw everything up? I miss the old ID that didn't suck bethesda's ***, for real..... I miss good old and simple quake 3 times...

If you like boomer shooters, and are a fan of actual skill based games. Then this game is for you. Its been a long time since I've felt the need to go into private lobby's and just practice movement. Get a feel for rocket travel time. This is a gamers game. You wont top the leader board with luck. Don't get discouraged early on, keep at it, keep practicing and I guarantee you'll fall in love and be begging for more.
Yes, a server browser would be nice. Yes mods and custom maps would be nice. But I can appreciate what we have and this game is the only competitive shooter worth playing. Happy Fragging!!
