Help Pushy and Pully get back their spaceship on their trip across Blockland.
Push blocks to defeat the monsters, join blocks of the same colour to get power ups and defeat the bosses to recover the parts of your broken spaceship.

Pushy and Pully in Blockland

Bereits am 05.05.2020 erschien das Spiel des Entwicklers Resistance Studio, heute möchte ich euch das Spiel gerne präsentieren, welches ich zufällig auf Steam entdeckt habe und Arcade- sowie Koop Fans gefallen könnte, denn das Spiel hat definitiv Suchtpotenzial. Leider würde ich das Spiel gerne positiv Bewerten, aber Aufgrund Bugs und Input Lags, muss ich den Daumen nach unten geben.

Story und Handlung

Pushy und Pully sind die Protagonisten des Spiels, die ihr im Koop steuern könnt. Spielt ihr alleine im Solomodus, steht euch natürlich nur ein Charakter zur Verfügung, leider gibt es keine Möglichkeit zwischen den beiden zu wechseln, so dass ihr automatisch immer mit Pushy spielt und euer Partner mit Pully. Die Story ist sehr schnell erzählt und findet auch nur in Comic Zeichnungen statt ohne texte. Die beiden Protagonisten fliegen ein Raumschiff und werden unmittelbar vor Blockland angegriffen und müssen Notlanden, ein Alien schnappt sich daraufhin einige Teile eures Raumschiffs, die ihr dringend benötigt. Eure Aufgabe ist es nun Blockland zu entfliehen und fünf Bosse zu besiegen um an eure Bauteile zu kommen, damit ihr euer Raumschiff wieder flott bekommt und aus Blockland fliehen könnt.

Gameplay

Pushy and Pully in Blockland spielt sich ziemlich Retro und fühlt sich etwas wie Bombermann an, ihr schiebt Blöcke hin und her und versucht Feinde damit zu treffen um sie zu besiegen. Durch das kombinieren gleicher Blöcke schaltet ihr Power Ups frei. Pro Level habt ihr ein Zeitlimit, das ihr überschreiten könnt, jedoch werdet ihr von einem Alien darauf angegriffen und mit einem tödlichen Laserstrahl verfolgt, schafft ihr es den letzten Gegner zu eliminieren habt ihr das Level auch bei Ablauf der Zeit noch geschafft. Oft ist der Zeitlimit jedoch ziemlich nervig, gerade bei Boss Gegner. Im Koop ist dies kein Problem, da ihr zu zweit angreifen könnt und euch dieselbe Zeit zusteht, wie im Singleplayer.

Steuerung

Ich habe Pushy and Pully in Blockland mit dem Controller gespielt und es war ein spürbarer Input Lag vorhanden, was bei dieser Art Spiel eigentlich ein No Go ist. Es war zwar machbar und ich konnte es auch durchspielen, jedoch brauchten gerade die letzten beiden Bosse und einige Level mehrere Durchgänge, weil die Steuerung verzögert oder falsch reagierte. Bei Gegnern wo Schnelligkeit gefragt ist, hat man auch kaum Chancen, man wird sich also mit dem „Game Over“-Screen anfreunden müssen, denn das werdet ihr mehrfach sehen und das nicht unbedingt, weil einige Levels knackig sind. Im Übrigen ändert auch die Tastatur an diesem Problem nichts, denn auch hier wird der Input Lag schnell sichtbar.

Bugs und Probleme

Obwohl Pushy and Pully in Blockland bereits 2020 erschien, scheinen einige Bugs nicht behoben oder den Entwicklern aufgefallen zu sein. Dabei rede ich nicht von Bugs wie bspw. die oben angesprochenen Input Lags, sondern auch während des Spielens, dass plötzlich Endgegner sich nicht mehr bewegen oder man nach dem beenden des Spiels nicht mehr zurück ins Menü kommt, weil der „Thank you vor Playing“-Bildschirm nicht mehr weggeht. Auch das Abschließen des Levels in dem man alle Blöcke zerstört. Statt die Gegner besiegt, war sicherlich nicht so geplant. Auch der Radius der Gegner ist nicht ganz richtig, in dem sie uns Schaden zufügen können, so brauchen bspw. Samen von Pflanzen oft zwei Bodenflächen, statt nur eine.

Grafik und Sound

Grafisch hat mir Pushy and Pully in Blockland sehr gut gefallen, die Zeichnungen der Gegner und Charaktere ist richtig niedlich geworden, generell mag ich Pixelart sehr und das wurde hier ebenfalls sehr gut getroffen, dadurch wirkt das Spiel noch mehr wie ein Retro-Game vom SNES oder Gameboy. Die Musik passt gut zum Spiel und lässt sich gut aushalten. Beides harmonisiert prächtig zusammen.

Fazit:

Mir hat Pushy and Pully in Blockland wirklich sehr gut gefallen, das Gameplay ist simple und dennoch herausfordernd, es gibt einfache und schwerere Achievements zum Sammeln, die Gegner werden, je weiter wir kommen, schwerer und benötigen auch mal mehr Blöcke bis sie besiegt sind. Auch die Bosse sind sehr gut gemacht und unterhalten, jedoch können diese aufgrund von Input Lags ziemlich frustrieren. Allein beim letzten Boss habe ich über 20 Versuche gebraucht, weil entweder die Zeit nicht ausreichte und ich getötet wurde, oder weil aufgrund Bugs die Blöcke den Gegner nicht trafen, auch nervig war der spürbare Input Lag. Zudem kann ich nicht nachvollziehen, wie das Spiel getestet wurde von den Entwicklern, denn nach dem „Thank you for Playing“-Bildschirm geht es nicht mehr weiter und es bleibt nur die Möglichkeit das Spiel mit dem Task-Manager zu beenden. Die fünf Welten bieten viel Abwechslung, wollt ihr jedoch in einer Welt eure Punkte verbessern um bspw. den dritten Stern zu erhalten, müsst ihr jedes Mal zurück ins Menü und dort alles neu auswählen, also quasi: Play – Save 1 – Select Player – Select Stage. Ich würde euch dringend empfehlen, die Demo auszuprobieren und dann zu entscheiden, ob ihr mit solchen Bugs leben könnt oder nicht. Mir hat es wie gesagt unglaublich viel Spaß gemacht, jedoch würde ich es in diesem zustand nicht weiterempfehlen.

Multiplayer Pengo.
Sehr gute (360) Controller Unterstützung.
Leben werden nicht geteilt.
Wird schnell sehr unübersichtlich und schwierig.
Man muss quasi auswendiglernen.

A lot of fun with a friend! Me and my boyfriend completed it in one sitting in about 3 hours!
Totally recommend if you cant get it in the sale.
You'll get a load more play time if you go hard for the three star rating on every level.
I say get it and support the team~

From the very moment your eyes land on the title screen, Pushy and Pully is absolutely seeping with adorable. Colors, characters and creatures all alike are like their purpose was to be as cute as humanly possible. Then you actually play and realize that there is much more to this game than simply being cute. Buried underneath the cutsie adorableness there is a really great puzzle game waiting to be found similar to the likes of old school puzzle games.

Winning in this game requires you to kill all of the enemies on the screen by pushing blocks around. As easy as that sounds, it most definitely can get tough. You have to really be strategic with your approach where you will push blocks because they move all the way across the screen until they hit a wall, which can very very rapidly cause you to find yourself in a tough place to get out of due to no blocks being push-able. This dilemma will quickly result in you having to destroy blocks caught up against others.

Crushing blocks may seem like not a big deal, but there is a nice little match 3 system to get little perks, like bombs, depending on the blocks you match. Matching 3 becomes important for scores. Not only is the strategy of how to push the blocks important, but you also have a timer really keeping the fire lit under you to keep moving quickly. The mixture of these elements creates a kind of tense scenario that is very satisfying to work through.

Graphically speaking, this game takes a pixelated art style approach, so this game can run very easy on a super wide range of machines making it a great puzzle game for just about anyone in that regard. The music and sound effects are both very pleasing and suiting to accompany the visual style adding to the cute appeal of the game.

Pushy and Pully was also developed with longevity in mind. To keep you replaying despite beating the game, you have a ranking system here that will have you coming back for more to try and beat your old records and to really hit those high scores. Once you start really dissecting the puzzles to optimize score but still to beat the clock, the game can get pretty intense.

Pushy and Pully is definitely a game that you can play in short bursts or for long time frames, while enjoying every moment. There is a lot to offer here and if you’re a fan of old puzzle games with a bomberman-like feel to how the game moves, you may just find a lot of joy in this cute little game.

As dado.cangemi kindly pointed out, the game is clearly taking inspiration from Don't Pull, an old arcade game. Some may even say plagiarism at this point but hey, what's wrong with a little remake? I'm not here to judge that. What I can judge however is the quality of that remake.

And uh… it's not good in that field. The controls are quite unresponsive due to the animation (your character keeps on moving on a bit to end its animation even after you stopped pushing it). The game also manages to look less pretty than Don't Pull did, which is quite a disappointment. You know, it's like those ugly filters being applied on 16 bits video games. It just looks washed out.

I mean, the game on his own can be funny for a bit and I dare say enjoyable but it just doesn't stand against the competition being only a few clicks away and for free.

To sum it up, here's a lil bit of advice to the dev on how to fix it:
- Remove the filter on the visuals. Go for a crispy look. People into retro gaming enjoy those jaggies.
- You need better and more responsive controls. Also, native x-input support (instead of that old school configuration panel) would help.

In simple terms I had a absolute blast playing this, it has a classic arcade style gameplay which means you have to think fast and plan your moves.
the pixelart is wonderful and gives the game a real classic feel.

The addition of boss fights was a real bonus for me and breaks the game up nicely from world to world

I got a review copy of this but have already purchased the game on my other account and will be sure to buy it on my Switch when I get one again!

Very good game!!! Would recommend for people that want to play a new sort of puzzle. Also really fun to play with friends at home, or even over parsec :)

Who is this for? : Everyone, all ages.
Does the multiplayer work well? : Yes

How is the game lenght and pace? : Short and sweet with good replay value.
How are the graphics? : Clean, easy on the eye and do not hinder gameplay.
How is the UI? : Simple and fast.

I had a lot of fun playing this game with a friend.

I encoutered 2 glitches in multiplayer where we had to reset the game, losing us some progress. (Game seemed to sometime skip end-state when one of use died .)

I would've liked a bit more puzzle levels.

An adorable arcade game that's somewhat reminiscent of the 00's era of high quality flash games. I've had lots of fun playing through this and if anyone wants a fun game to casually play through in one sitting, this is definitely the game for that. Each level is surprisingly fun to go about whatever way you want, yet a star system tied to achievements makes going for a more depth-run with strategize how to go about levels feel all the more rewarding. Definitely suggest this to anyone who wants a cute game to play through, double so if you have someone to goof around in it with.

Super fun game inspired on the Three Wonders Arcade sub-game: Don't pull. If you like colourful retro art style, and music like puzzle bobble you will love this. It hooks up rather quicky, the challenges are thrilling and the gameplay is polished. I finished it in 2h of gameplay.

Pros: Very nice art style, fun and stylish. The puzzles are well thought and challenging, and the phases are just enough.
Cons: Art need a bit polish, its retro style is not consistent (hi-def vs retro art on screen at the same time). Needs some visual cues added here and there. More enemies and replayability wouldn't hurt it.

This game is incredibly fun and highly addictive (in the best possible way, ofc!). The levels are getting increasingly difficult but challenging enough that you still feel like you want to get more out of it. I particularly enjoy playing it with my partner. It's the first game that we play together and we're both loving it. :) :)

Despite its cute looks, this game can be quite tough at times, especially when you try to get 3 stars on every level. If you're not looking to do this, I believe anyone could beat this game with some effort. Getting a game over is very forgiving, as you can just continue we're you left off.

The game looks great and the music is great too. Every world has some unique gameplay features, which really help keep the gameplay feeling fresh until the end cutscene.

I really enjoyed my time with this game and would definitely recommend you give it a shot.

If you're like me and grew up with Bomberman then you might get some good memories from the olden days of gaming. Now this isn't Bomberman but it has a Bomberman vibe and it's super colorful with fun enemies. Even if you never heard of Bomberman or didn't like it, this game is very unique in itself so don't let that detour you.

At first, you might think hey this game isn't that hard it's pretty easy but each new world and level keeps adding to the challenge and you'll be trying to get through to the end just to fight each new boss and see all the new enemies.

Unfortunately I didn't get to play the game in co-op mode yet but I can only imagine it's even more fun.
