On the other side the mechanic gameplay is mediocre. The camera isn't adjustable and often in the way. I played the game with a XBOX One Controller and sometimes the actions weren't recognized by the game. It's not the most precisest handling and i felt like there is an ingame lag.
To this point of my review i would still say that Psychonauts is a good game but to the end of the game you are forced to do the most annoying parts and mechanics of this game which feels like a great punishment after a good journey. The story feels stretched at this point as well and being honest: The last part of this game was the most frustrating experience i ever had in a game.

But to expound on that a little more I'll say this, this game is close to twenty years old now and still nothing is like it, not even it's sequel. It's story, characters and gameplay are so unique that it's hard to compare it to any other game. Psychonauts came out around the time where platformers were still a huge genre and at the I ignored this game because of that. Barring Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie and maybe a few others the platforming genre was one that became almost instantly stale; boring collect a-thons, lame anthropomorphic characters, jarring color palates and storylines seemingly taken from children's cartoons (which I guess makes sense since these games were aimed at children). But Psychonauts has a more serious (and sometimes funny) story that deals with mental illness, super unique and varied worlds to explore and collecting thats more reigned in.
It's not perfect of course, some of platforming (Meat Circus) is really dated and had me frustrated but it's nothing that brings the game down overall. I was able to 100% this game and enjoy it throughout.
So if anyone reading this is on the fence about whether to get the game I say take the plunge, it's well, well worth it!

The story overall might not shock you, but the writing, dialogue and creativity at display is the very best you can get. It handles mental problems with humour and respect, while not digging too deep into the problemativ issues. I also love how the individual levels are build up with good attention to detail.
The platforming works... okay. It hasn't aged that well, and there is some very frustrating parts here and there, and sometimes Raz doesn't do what you clearly want him to do. Very much like some of the Assasins Creed-games.
All in all, worth playing! You'll get some good laughs from it!

Enter the Collective Unconsious
It's a non-puzzle story-based platformer collectathon.
The core premise is that you are a Psychic Soldier who can project yourself into the minds of troubled personalities and cure their insanity. It's like if a Psychiatrist actually did something rather than keep asking you how something makes you feel. Now instead of throwing you into a menu where each level was someone's mind, you are put into a learning environment where you are trained on how to be a Psychonaut and you enter people's minds by going to them in the real world and affixing a mini-door (the Psycho-Portal) on their forehead.
Instead of upgrading your abilities via a Skill Tree, you have a Skill Wheel where distinct powers can be added to your kit in the form of Merit Badges like in Scouts. You earn these merit badges by completing each of the training courses, or by an overly complicated procedure of: ranking up by collecting figments and cobwebs inside minds, collecting spinning cards and arrowheads from the real world, spending arrowheads to buy PSI cores in the camp lodge, then traveling to Ford's lair and using both machines at the bottom that serve the same purpose... and every couple of ranks, you get New Skills and upgrades to pre-existing skills just to avoid a skill tree.
In terms of platforming, there is:
- Gliding from Breath of the Wild (the Levitation Balloon)
- Ground Pound from Mario but with splash damage (Melee after a jump)
- Double Jump to correct false distance judgement (Base Kit)
- Moon Gravity Jumps (the Levitation Ball)
- Climbing, Swinging, and Rail Grinding.
However, there is clunk. For example, the rails can't properly figure out gravity and start pushing you randomly to either side. You just lose your grip randomly while climbing poles, swinging beams, grinding rails, etc and either fall off or start clipping awkwardly as you spam your jump button in order to fix it.
The collectibles are very loosely tied to the core of the game. Figments are just supposed to be expressions that you'd perform whilst in the place it's meant to be collected (like a person climbing a ladder or playing music on stage) but these act more like guiding lines similar to the coins in Mario to show what way you need to go. Mental Cobwebs were honestly unnecessary and just gives you a purpose to revisit older levels after unlocking the 'Cobweb Duster' later down the line after grinding for Arrowheads by button mashing with a Dowsing Rod (another over-complicated system that just takes the focus out of the interesting part of the game (inside minds) and makes you waste time in the real world/ camp. So many collectibles are flat, you don't know how to get them properly cause they're literally invisible when viewed from the side especially since they're translucent too. The only good collectibles are the Vaults because they show a summary of a person's happy moments and their divulgement into troubles in the form of caricature sketches.
The game makes you feel smart for playing it, unlike other brain-numbing games like Borderlands, and it does it without making the puzzles complex at all. When solving a puzzle, it emulates a feeling as if you've identified the crux of a person's mental issue and could relate to it in its creative expression. The art style may seem like an excuse for making imperfect models, but it fits the 'Caricature Nature' of it very well.
Mobility and offense aren't the only part of your kit because you also have puzzle-solving-centric abilities. But even though they work on a wide range of NPCs, they aren't as fleshed out as I thought they'd be (Invisibilty, Clairvoyance, Confusion, and Telekinesis)
Agent Cruller's bacon guides are useful and the fast travel system is super convenient because there's always a log when you need one.
it was not as painful to play as other older games like Half-Life as I did in the past because of its forward-thinking design.
I had trouble setting up my controller cause Steam Input wouldn't work from the get-go and kept detecting my keyboard as the primary input which the game kept defaulting to. There's a long opening cutscene and you can't change settings or resolution until then. The switch from QHD 160fps in-game graphics to SD 30fps cutscenes is quite jarring but at least they are in widescreen I guess... Flipping the camera makes the right joystick inverted in menu/selection wheels too (the left joystick is fine though).
When we normally enter someone's mind, we have to face censors that fight back against things that aren't supposed to be there, to prevent the mind from going into insanity or having weird thoughts. But in Boyd Cooper's mind, we see a complete lack of censors because his mind has been twisted by society and has placed him into a conspiracy-head, and the censors in his mind are fighting against himself to keep itself sane.
Some of the other levels I liked were
Sasha's Shooting Gallery, Black Velvetopia, and Waterloo World
Unlike other levels, the collectibles actually helped me find the right path than disturb me.

Psychonauts is the exception to this, and is one of the few platformers that after it’s over, you actively want to go back to try and finish everything. It’s such a creative & wonderful game, the levels are inspired, the world is nice, and I swear this is one of the funniest games I’ve ever played because it pulls no punches.
And having a game that focuses so hard on mental issues in a delightful way is so nice. It’s never too depressing, but it’s never takes away from these issues with it’s humor. Not only that, part of me can relate deeply with some of these characters (*cough* Edgar *cough*) and minimal spoilers but the final bit that has you helping a character overcome deep seated trauma is so beautifully done.
It’s not perfect though, it takes a moment to get to the really good levels, and the final level is disappointing considering that 4 of the last 5 levels before it were masterpieces, combat is underutilized and never that great, and apart from like Raz, Sasha, and a couple other characters - the character design sucks.
Regardless of all those this game is one of the best 3D platformers of all time, and my second favorite from the 2000s era (Mario Galaxy is unbeatable in my eyes haha)
On a scale of Messy Divorce to ‘Till Death Do We Part I give this game a Happy Loving Marriage.
In other words 9/10.

Psychonauts Review
Before I start with the review, let me save you some time, if you are not ok with outdated graphics and some game mechanics, this game is not for you.
Psychonauts tells the story of Rasputin, a young psychic that wants to become a Psychonaut (a secret agent with psychic powers). The game takes place during the span of 2 days in a secret training facility that looks like a summer camp full of kids with all kinds of wacky powers and weird personalities. And that is all I will tell you, I went blind into this game and I have to say that the less you know about the lore, the more you’ll enjoy it.
Questions you might have if you're interested in playing it:
- What is it exactly that you do in the game?If you know about classic 3D platformers from the early 2000’s, you will get what Psychonauts is all about. If not, it’s basically a game mostly oriented on traversing the levels jumping and collecting all kinds of junk in order to gain or improve skills.
- Will it make my eyes bleed? It’s a 20-year-old game, so yes… but not quite… As low quality as the textures may look for modern standards, the art style and cinematics alongside the in-game animations still hold up surprisingly well. I personally love how stylized the in-game models are. From a character design perspective, they are easily recognizable and you can tell who they are just by how they look, they did an amazing work. I’m a person that thinks that graphics are the least important aspect of a game and I really don’t mind old graphics, but if you are sensitive to “ugly” graphics, you will hate this game.
- Does it have a good story? Not really. The story is fun but predictable. The game has a huge plus in its favor: it has a ton of enjoyable characters and an amazing sense of humor. I would say that the story of the game is enjoyable but nothing fantastic.
- Does it have a good soundtrack? The OST helps to compliment the theme of each level very well but is not memorable or catchy. It’s a decent OST that doesn’t do anything special, It’s like the background music in the Saturday cartoons.
- Does it have replay value? Gameplay-wise: If you want to replay the levels to pick up every single collectable, then yes. Beyond that it has no replay-ability. But from the thematic aspect of the game, it’s worth replaying this game to see all the little details that the devs put into each world and how everything connects with each other. There are so many cool little details that you can understand in a second play-through that it truly makes a revisit worth it.
- Does it run well? Yes. It does have some minor bugs and glitches, but nothing game breaking. For being a game from the early 2000’s it runs flawlessly in modern systems without you needing to mod or tweak something. This is a thing that is rare among older games.
- Is it fun? Yes! This game is so funny and creative with how it implements their themes and ideas. Gameplay-wise is just another early 2000’s 3D platformer, nothing bad with that, but this game shines on how the world, the characters and the subtext is presented to you. Gameplay wise it's your standard 3D platformer, but thematically it’s easily one of the richest and fun games that I have ever played. The parts where the game makes you deduce what to do next having new abilities at your disposal are hands down the most enjoyable. Be aware that the last level is a glorified escort mission and it is annoying as hell, this may be a game that you will enjoy playing but not finishing.
So what is Psychonauts?
The term that I see a lot of people use for this type of game is “collectathon”, for those that don’t know a collectathon is a game that requires you to pick up lots of random collectables to progress the main story, usually it’s a 3D platformer. Psychonauts asks you to only get some of the thousands of collectibles to finish the game with the basic set of skills, but the game becomes way easier and definitively way more enjoyable.
One of the things that really impressed me about this title has to be how it presents their themes about the mind and how it feels to be inside another person's mind. I’m not going to write an in depth analysis about it here, but I would like to highlight some spoiler free concepts that may help you to understand what I mean:
-There is a world halfway through the game that represents the broken mind of a crazy man, which is composed of 3 sub worlds. The first world exists inside the second world, the second world exists inside the third world and the third word exists within the first world. Besides being an amazing concept of a level to explore, it helps to reinforce how this crazy person is trapped inside his own mind.
-Most levels are dedicated to explore and (most of the time) help people overcome their problems. Almost everything inside each mind is unique, including the collectables that tell you small bits of that person's life. Once you figure out what they are all about, you start to see how everything fits, it’s brilliant.
The game is not perfect; the controls are where the game feels the most outdated. Some animations take too long to complete and certain elements of the levels or the design of the enemies can and will stun-lock you.
Things that I like about this game:
- It’s an almost bug free experience. This game is so polished!
- The boss battles are amazing
- One of the most creative level designs that I have ever seen in a game.
- The animations are amazing.
- The difficulty curve is perfect.
- The powers are fun to use and they affect gameplay in meaningful ways.
- One of the most funny games that I have ever played. This is not hyperbole, it truly is.
- You can skip all cinematics, be mindful that for older games this is a huge plus.
- Works perfectly with modern OS.
Things that I dislike about this game:
- The platforming is a bit too stiff and updated for my taste.
- For the most part it is not that hard, but when you hit a wall this game can be so frustrating.
Is this game worth my hard earned money?
If you came this far I assume you don’t mind old and “ugly” graphics. So if you are intro 3D platformers, or you are looking for a weird and creative game this is an easy buy. I can see why this game has a cult classic status, it’s a surprisingly mature and funny experience.
This is the kind of game that everyone can enjoy, but not everyone will play. Give it a try, it is worth it.

Positives
+Unique and stylish visuals.
+Compelling story and characters.
+Great concepts. Every mind you wander through is unique and characteristic to the belonging person.
+Has great sound effects and voice cast.
+You want more of it after you finish it because of the awesome universe.
+Exploration is fun af
Negatives
-Game doesn't run above 60Hz without third party softwares. When you do, it becomes a buggy mess where Raz don't climb, don't grab ledges and falls off randomly.
-Final stage of the game is tedious by design and because of the problems I previously mentioned.
-Tedious figment system to upgrade stuff. But artwork of figments is cool.

This review contains no major spoilers.
Psychonauts (PN) is a game I remember fondly from my childhood. With the second installment coming soon, I decided to revisit where it all began. Now that I’m older, I definitely see some faults in an otherwise fun and interesting cult classic. However, I still stepped away feeling satisfied after the credits rolled. Strap on your goggles, because we’re going to war on the mental frontier!
STORY
Premise
PN is framed as a summer camp adventure for gifted children. You take control of Raz as he trains at Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp in order to fulfill his dream of becoming a Psychonaut, a psychic secret agent. The events of the game cover Raz's basic training, as well as his attempts to stop a psychic conspiracy lurking in the background.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2561481957
Execution
I found the story still held up after all these years. Playing the game really feels like being in a Saturday morning cartoon due to its energetic and cheeky tone guiding you through Raz's journey. The writing is pretty great and some jokes still got a chuckle out of me. Despite being full of tropes and cliches, PN's execution of them all creates a really unique experience.
My only real complaints are that the villain's motivations could've been more explicit. Their reasons are only really told via optional collectables, which is confusing and annoying. Nonetheless, the journey to the end was quite enjoyable and the biggest reason why I recommend PN.
GAMEPLAY
I felt that the overall mediocre gameplay failed to meet the high expectations the story set. Nevertheless, I still had fun with it all. I finished with 100% completion in around ten hours. A casual playthrough probably would’ve taken around seven hours.
Mind Your Step
The main draw of the game is infiltrating someone’s mind and exploring their psyche. I absolutely love the unique theming and mechanics each one presents. The resulting subtle and explicit storytelling of each level is fantastic and really lets you walk a mile in their shoes. Some gimmicks are annoying, but fit their associated person well.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2541460257
Mental Gymnastics Made Easy!
As a platformer, things were pretty average. Raz has all the right moves needed to get around- jumping, double jumping, gliding, etc. Movement felt pretty tight, although Raz moves a bit too slowly on foot. Platforming puzzles are rather basic, typically ranging from timed jumps to reaching a faraway ledge.
Aside from the cool theming, PN doesn't explore any new concepts in its platforming segments. As someone who doesn't dabble in the genre often, I found these sections rather easy and generic. While navigating a level never truly wowed me, the context of it all was really enthralling. As a result, each level was both a battlefield and a playground to explore.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2561607045
Pain is All in the Mind
Combat feels rather lackluster as well, being very simple and not terribly satisfying. Raz’s arsenal consists of a few offensive powers, such as psychic blasts and pyrokenesis, and a three-hit melee attack. Typical combat amounts to just attacking until the enemy dies. A few special enemies require specific strategies, but none are terribly difficult. Bosses are a nice change of pace, but also have relatively easy to beat. Regardless, fighting a person's inner demons is really interesting and helps break up platforming.
The only real difficulty comes from late-game enemies doing more damage and health pickups recovering a low and set amount of health. However, this is mitigated by consumable health items, enemies occasionally dropping health pickups on death, and an upgrade that slowly regens health. All in all, combat feels half-baked but serviceable.
Climbing the Ranks
As a Psychonaut in training, Raz will learn a pretty sizable number of psychic powers to play with. Granted, some powers are definitely more useful than others and may find permanent residence in one of your three active power slots. For example, I never got rid of Levitation due to how much it enhances Raz's mobility.
Raz will have to cultivate his psychic potential in order to learn new abilities and enhance his current ones. PN has collectathon elements that allow Raz to level up. While collection always felt important and rewarding, it also became really annoying at times. Hunting down certain leveling collectables was like trying to find a needle in a haystack- frustrating and tiring at the end. Their placements can be needlessly esoteric or annoying to reach.
Similarly, tracking your completion is needlessly convoluted. You don't have the ability to freely check your completion for each area in your journal. While you can view your current area's progress, you must physically travel back to other areas to see what you're missing. Since each level has multiple areas, backtracking to double-check stats got grating quickly. While there is a fast travel system, it does nothing to mitigate all this clunkiness.
Regardless, in a casual playthrough, you only need enough levels to get certain powers and most upgrades are just nice to have. I highly recommend just playing for fun and not stressing over going for completion on your first run.
VISUALS
PN has a very cartoony art style that I found to be charming. The colors used also pop and make things feel alive. Conversely, the lack of colors can really drive up the creep factor in certain areas. Level designs are fantastic as well, each feeling like its own self-contained theme park full of attractions. Nonetheless, prerendered cutscenes didn’t age well and are incredibly blurry. Similarly, certain textures are still blurry/low-res at higher resolutions. Animations are pretty good all-round.
AUDIO
The soundtrack is excellent. I was really shocked at how many genres were actually used in this game and how good they all were. The musical themes for each level are my favorites, each summarizing their associated person well. Sound effects are cartoony and fun. Despite some kid voices feeling off, the overall voice acting is fantastic.
PERFORMANCE
Zitat:
Intel i9-10850K - RTX 3080 - 32GB RAM - SATA SSD - 1080p
Unfortunately, the port really dropped the ball here. Apparently, due to the game’s age, the code has issues running on modern rigs. I experienced several crashes when first playing, and another issue of triggers breaking due to high FPS. It took nearly half an hour of poking around with the settings to finally be able to play. I had to settle for playing in a 1920x1080 window and using compatibility mode for Windows 8. Nonetheless, the framerate was well above 60 while playing and FPS bugs were fixed.
Graphical options are bare-bones and only cover the most important features like V-sync, shadows and VFXs. KBM controls can be rebound, but I played with a controller and had no issues.
The game retains all the various quirks that the original console version had. For example, sounds cutting off or stacking, models clipping, etc. Subtitles are too big and opaque, covering up most of the screen during cutscenes.
OVERALL
While not a perfect game, PN still remains one of my favorites. The atmosphere it delivers is truly magnificent and the cartoonish nature of everything compliments the whimsical nature of the human mind. Gameplay lets you experience Raz’s bizarre summer camp experience, but is rather underwhelming. However, it still manages to still be fun and engaging throughout its playtime.

Edit: I feel like since this is one of my favorite games of all time I better do something a bit more than just, quoting a funny line, especially with people coming to play this gem now that the sequel is literally just around the corner.
Psychonauts is a quirky, fun, adventure-game influenced platformer made by the genius team at Double Fine, including the illustrious game industry veteran, former lucasarts member Tim Schafer. The game follows a young boy, Razputin Aquato; An exceptionally talented for his age psychic who ran away from home due to his families disapproval of his psychic abilities to the secret goverment training facility Whispering Rock Summer camp.
Camp Whispering Rock is a place where gifted juvenile psychics go to grow, hone, and advance their psychic abilities under the tutelage of psychonauts agents Moreau Oleander, Sasha nein, And Milla Vodello, in the hopes of one day becoming full-fledged psychonauts themselves. Raz is a huge fan of the latter 2 names, and once he learns of the camps existence, runs away to become a psychonaut himself, hoping his all-time favorite heroes and idols will be let him train underneath their wing.
However, as soon as the Agents learn of his presence in the camp, they immediately contact his parents to come pick him up, leaving Raz with just a day to finish his training that the coach has so graciously allowed him, and to reach the coveted psychonaut title. What follows is an adventure that takes raz through the mind of his 3 mentors, slowly growing into an unfolding plot going on behind the scenes in the camp in which the campers brains are being stolen to create an army, and the only adults capable of handling it have gone missing.
This leads to Raz having to go out and put a stop to this scheme himself, Using his psychic abilities to chart into dangerous and unknown mental territory; Entering the minds of a Giant mutated fish, Multiple unstable mental asylum patients, And meat. Lots and Lots of meat. Can raz help everyone with their mental issues, can he stop the mysterious villain from his outlandish world takeover plot? Will he rescue his, I mean, NOT his girlfriend? In order to find out.. Youll have to play the game!
If you haven't played this game, and that Synopsis has sunk its teeth into you, convincing you to give it a try more than you were already wanting to from the cult classic status of this gem of a title, now's the best time to do so, as the sequel is dropping just next month at the time of this review. It has genius writing, outstanding voice acting, and while the gameplay can be dated in some areas, I still think as a 3d platforming adventure game, its held up remarkably well and is a must play for anybody even slightly interested in the genre.

I'd ask my mom to take me to the bookstore weekly just so I could read the new magazines and find more info on it. Had to beg to use the only computer in our home to check the website every day. I had no cell phone. I wasn't on any of the limited social media that existed. I didn't have anyone else to share my hype with.
My parents told me I needed to get straight A's (Principal's Honor Roll) for my final quarter if I wanted the game. I had only achieved it once before that. I busted my ass to prove how exceptional at 5th grade I was, and at school year's end, my parents received a report card with straight A's.
I received Psychonauts, about a month after its release. I managed to avoid spoilers.
After all that waiting, this game still had the nerve to be BETTER THAN I EVER COULD HAVE IMAGINED.
To this day, I still like playing it. I still like watching speedruns of it. I still think it has one of the best scripts in video game history. Some of the levels of this game on their own are legitimately better-designed than entire installments of popular modern game franchises. I didn't realize it at the time, because it was happening real-time, but this game was a generational-type experience. Games of this all-encompassing quality come out once every 5-7 years. If that. Games that make you want to play more games.
This is a game I would suggest gamers use to teach their non-gamer friends about games. This is a game I will show to my eventual child in order to illustrate and pass down the joy of video games as a medium of entertainment.
This is a classic. Everyone should own it. It made transitioning into middle school a little easier for me, and it'll probably make whatever you're going through right now a little easier for you too.

The story isn't something to write home about, but the small stories you go trough and it's secrets are the real key here, they're what you want.
Some of this games platforming is kind of broken, especially in the end, otherwise the platforming is a 6.5/10 at best.
They should have just went with the grabbing coins like the mario games do rather then the way they did it. Their choice was to have 2d images which are very hard to go trough sometimes, it's not like in Mario or Sonic games where you smoothly grab them all, you have to stop and look at them and go into them, which really ruins the flow.
But the story really is nice sometimes, so I suggest you grab this at a low price and wait until the sequel comes out.

- Story is great, cohesive and exciting
- Dialogue is funny and interesting, none of the characters feel boring and all of them are different
- Level design is beautiful - each level is set in the mind of a different character, so it serves as characterisation too. The Milkman Conspiracy, Black Velvetopia and Meat Circus are some of the best levels I've ever played in a video game.
- Music is great. It fits with the atmosphere of each level, each area, and each character.
- Graphics are surprisingly nice. The game looks old, but it looks good.
- Lot of stuff to collect, and 100%ing the game is very fun and doable in about 40 hours.
- Controls feel good. Once you unlock levitation you can bounce around aimlessly and still have fun.
- Great and tight-knit speedrun community with a huge assortment of impressive timeskips.
Tim Schafer is a videogame god. Buy this game, beat it fully in less than a week, and you'll never regret it.

What you can expect: creative and kooky environments, engaging puzzles, a unique warped aesthetic and character designs that fell off the table. Its story and personalities are memorable, and there's a good few catchphrases to steal.
Exploration is absolutely worth it. I encourage you to often take a step away from the ongoing storyline to check out side areas, or even previously visited ones. Take a walk in this Tim Burton-y world and inspect stuff to your heart's content.
My first and leisurely paced playthrough was about 15 hours. This should be roughly what you can expect, unless you really struggle with the more parkour-heavy portions, in which case I wish you relaxed practicing.
I don't think I'll ever forget this wacky ride.

I've tried playing with keyboard and controller and the controller works best - it's more intuitive.
It has a unique concept with lovely artwork throughout! I enjoy the way the story develops and that there are lots of thing to collect and work towards - even little behind the scenes sketches can be unlocked!
As the game came out in 2005, you can't expect modern graphics! However, the style they used still looks great to this day!
The only mild negative is that it's relatively easy to complete as an adult, but I don't mind that as I enjoy seeing the story unfold. You still have to use your brain a lot.
I recommend to anyone, any age, who wants to explore an interesting story about a summer camp for psychics! The trailer shows you the premise of the story very well, and the beginning of the game works as a nice tutorial to introduce you to everything.
If anyone has any questions, I'm basically and expert haha! Enjoy!

Graphics and animation are good.
The game is a real solid platformer and adventure.
It’s still got a lot of charm and its fun.
The levels design is quite neat.
The actual story was a deep and the game itself was pretty entertaining and well-made.
My one issue with the game, is that it doesn't do much to make me come back.
Overall, this is a wonderful game for all ages.

I did not expect this to be this good when I started it. This has a writing & production par with a Nickelodeon show while having a story setting of the movie Inception.
The aging graphics really not bothers me since they're not aiming for a realistic approach and yet the world felt more alive than most games I've recently played.
Really good voice acting and even though the game was targeting young audience, You could still enjoy the humor it brings. I just hope that the sequel still stays true to the nature of this gem.

Psychonauts is one of the best platformers of the mid 2000s ranking up with the likes of Okami, Super Mario Sunshine and Spyro. Doublefine and Tim Schafer knocked it out of the park with psychonauts and it's often overlooked in the sea of amazing platformers released in 2005.
Each level is lovingly crafted around storied characters and amazing art direction. The designs of both the characters and the levels they inhabit ooze personality, the gameplay is fantastic, it's easy to get lost in the bizarre world of Psychonauts, thanks to it's age it's very fairly priced as well and it'd be an insult to your steam library if you didn't buy it at such a low price point.
The voice acting is top notch and each voice actor deserves all the praise in the world for their roles (some highlights for me included Rasputin, Mila and Coach Oleander). Each voice actor flawlessly delivers tonnes of masterful voice work for many optional parts of the game that you may never hear, true fans will seek out all of the unique Mr. Pokeylope voicelines from each individual camper.
The graphics still hold up fairly well compared to many other games of the mid 2000s, it's brilliantly designed and many levels stand out thanks to their incredible art direction, one of my favourites being Black velvetopia.
The story is enthralling and engages easily. It cleverly takes turns and twists in the least expected manners, as you venture through the messy minds of many of the inhabitants of whispering rock psychic summer camp you won't know what to expect next as both the environment you're in and the characters around you change dynamically depending on which part of the game you're currently at. It's a joy to scour across the camp after each mesmerising mission, as you never know which minor characters may have been up to while you've been jumping through someone else's psyche, following these side characters short stories between levels quickly became a favourite pass time of mine between brilliant levels.
The open world of whispering rock psychic summer camp is inviting and rewards exploration with meaningful powerups in the form of the collectable PSI cards and PSI challenge markers, if you enjoy searching for small secrets in secluded parts of videogames you'll absolutely enjoy powering yourself up with these fun collectables.
The soundtrack by Peter McConnell is simply fantastic serving its purpose as an amazing audio backing for some of the best gameplay i've ever experienced. Every track (in particular The Milkman Conspiracy and The Meat Circus) fit the game so well and I can't ever imagine playing this game muted, a lot of games I play I listen to music on Spotify or maybe play a podcast while gaming, but with Psychonauts its tracks really tie each individual stage together in their quirky charming way and you might find yourself humming a few choice songs while walking around the house, and that's a real testament to the impact the audio has combined with the brilliant voice acting, art direction and stage design.
in 2006 Psychonauts won the BAFTA for Best Screenplay and playing the game it's easy to see why. Overall this game is a strong 9/10 with every element of it's production oozing charm and personality from start to finish. I personally can't wait for the much anticipated Psychonauts 2 and I immensely enjoyed the spin-off VR title the Rhombus of Ruin.
Please check out this game if you enjoy amazing platformers from the mid 2000s with hilarious writing, astounding artwork, engaging storylines and sensational voice acting.

It's probably the best 3D platform game I've ever played. Every single mind you enter is a new experience. One of Tim Schafers master pieces. It's hard to compare to ANY other game since they really pushed the genre to a limit with this one. The graphics and artstyle are timeless.
The only disappointment was that it had to end.

First thing I noticed after booting it up is that some of the character designs are fucking ugly - and I mean, even for the time. You can tell there was an issue adapting what obviously looked good on a cartoony sketch into PS2-era 3D graphics. On top of that, the plot starts like something Dreamworks or a less inspired Disney might put out - half Inside Out, half Tim Burton, which to be honest isn't the world's worst combination, but not what I'm looking for in a videogame in 2020.
Luckily things vastly improve within about 30 minutes. As soon as you get past the first tutorial level, everything - the writing, the gameplay, the level designs, but especially the writing - really kicks into gear, and your left with a slightly-underappreciated gem that shines just as brightly as it did back in the PS2 era. This manages to to balance some extremely dark subject matter with classic Saturday morning cartoon humor flawlessly. You want a plot that is reminiscent of pre-John Carter Pixar, 2000s Cartoon Network and Henry Selick at their very best? How about a satisfying platformer with innovative level designs that all stand out from each other that totally scratches that collect-a-thon itch without ever getting obnoxious? It also does about as good a job as exploring psychic abilities within an action title as Second Sight did in the same era - a lot less depth to be fair, but this is a platformer, not a third-person psychological thriller.
I'm not gonna talk more about the plot because it's best to go in blind, but get past the kinda ugly graphics and you've got a timeless classic on your hands. I cannot wait for the sequel.

However, Double Fine never were masters of gameplay and this shows in it's imprecision, clunkyness and stiffness. Character will now grab the ledge, but now won't, targeting works, but then it doesn't...Perhaps even bigger issue are the controls that, on PCs native K/B combo, are all over the place.
But the biggest problem, by far, is the camera. It took me back to the early 3D games of the 90s and 2000s and that is not a good thing - the last few levels can be anger inducing just because of this.
In summary, because the gameplay, controls and camera don't hold up, the game didn't age well, hence the negative.

The kid starring in Psychonauts is Razputin, also known as Raz. He comes from a family that runs a circus. He runs away from the circus to sneak into a summer camp. The camp counselors accept him, but that is when nightmares begin for the children as they lose their brains and become obsessed with TV. Raz is on a mission to uncover the wacky conspiracy behind these problems at summer camp.
The plot of Psychonauts revolves around a bizarre cast of characters that add much interest to the game. The counselors include Coach Oleander, Milla Vodello, and Agent Nein. The voice over for Coach Oleander sounds extremely convincing as an aggressive drill sergeant, Milla Vodello is the party girl, and Agent Nein is a scientist. Raz gets his missions from Ford Cruller, a mysterious man who exists in many different places at once. The strangeness of these characters drives the storyline and keeps it from being boring.
While the game begins in the summer camp, much of the game occurs inside the brains of the zany characters. Summer camp is basically Raz’s home base, consisting of a camp store and a tram that cuts down on backtracking. The camp presents many opportunities to listen to monologues and engage in dialogues with the kids. Entering the brains of others is fascinating since you will see how each brain is so different from the other brains. The level inside Coach Oleander’s brain consists of a war-torn environment with many explosions. This is where you learn to swing from pole to pole, slide down rails, and double jump to reach otherwise unreachable platforms. The level inside Milla Vodello’s brain looks like multiple disco floors where she and the kids are always dancing. You must use psychic abilities to reach the higher floors and psychic abilities are what drive the gameplay so that you can take on enemies and solve puzzles.
The psychic powers are earned gradually by Raz and they are quite varied. They include the ability to become invisible, the ability to levitate, the ability to move objects with your brain, and the ability to burn objects that are in your way. If you have trouble reaching a platform that is too far away, you can levitate by going up into the air, then PSI float to descend onto that platform. Psychic powers become essential in boss battles. In some boss battles you will have to assign hot buttons to 3 psychic powers in the first stage, then change the hot buttons for other psychic powers in the second stage to exploit the boss’ weaknesses.
The platforming should be familiar to veterans of adventure platforms. In one level Raz is literally on a game board facing off against a mental projection of Napoleon Bonaparte. You will shrink down to a small size to recruit new pieces to support your cause, then return to normal size so that you can move the pieces around. One of the most entertaining levels involves fighting wrestlers and a large bull in what appears to be a velvet painting of a congested Mexican or Spanish city. With diverse brains come diverse levels, keeping the game interesting all the time. I used the keyboard and mouse setup and had no problems with jumping from one trapeze to another or jumping from one platform to another. The keyboard and mouse controls feel very tight, which is necessary for platforming games.
The game is not an exceedingly long adventure, as it can be completed in 10-15 hours. However, if you are a completionist, you can explore levels to find hidden items that will help Raz improve his rank and help him become more powerful with his psychic abilities. There are thousands of figments of various colors to find in the game. It may be a tedious task for some players to find them in hidden areas, but these figments can really help Raz become more powerful as the game progresses. So, you can spend more than 20 hours in the game if you are willing to search for figments, scavenger hunt items, and unlockable memories from each mind.
The graphics in the game are rather good at 3D and the presentation of the levels in each mind is very well polished. The characters are well animated and move smoothly. The optics of the game show a sense of style.
The one problem I had with the game was the occasional movement of the camera, especially in combat sequences. Sometimes I had trouble seeing Raz while performing melee attacks with PSI punches near walls. This is only a minor problem and is far from a game killer.
Psychonauts is an outstanding adventure platformer with plenty of entertainment value. There is not much replay value after completing the game, but it is well presented and has great platforming mechanics for diversity and control purposes. The psychic powers add a lot of fun to the gameplay.
My Score: 8.5/10

Visually Psychonauts hasn't aged well, but the platforming mechanics hold up surprisingly well. None of which matters much in the grand scheme of things, though, as the main draw here is the story: and the humor and level design here is on point. Definitely one of those cult-classics that fully lives up to the hype -- and then some.
