Before you buy this game, make sure you check if your PC is compatible with it.
For reference, I tried the ff:
1 .Change the # of cores to 4 at the BIOS
2. Change the CPU cores in affinity for steam and protype
3. Added a resolution option at the start-up
4. Disable HID

Prototype 2
After a bit less than 3 years since the original Prototype release, we got Prototype 2. The first game was not perfect but it was pretty interesting and experimental, especially for its years. So, is Prototype 2 a well-made sequel or just a lame title created to make money on the fans?To be honest, I both like and hate Prototype 2. It improved some concepts introduced in the first title but also downgraded others. To begin with, graphics and atmosphere got a substantial development. The game looks much better than the original, plus, apart from simple day-night cycle it now got changing weather. Civilians and military stopped being just mindless NPCs who roam the streets, now they interact with each other. On top of that there are some custom-made situations like people warming near the burning barrels or scientist examining infected areas. As for the gameplay, well, it's quite controversial. On the one hand, it became smoother and more diverse: there are now more kinds of enemies, as well as more interesting missions and trackable collectables. On the other hand, it became too simple and less complex. There are now only 5 main mutations: claws, fists, tendrils, whip, blade - and 3 additional abilities: devastator, bio-bomb, pack leader. Shield was refined; visions, armor, and muscle mass are totally gone. Moreover, each mutation now only has 2 types of attack and progression system became much simpler. The challenges are now a part of a separate DLC and the only post game features are collectables and Blacknet missions, which frankly won't take to long to gather and complete.
Though plot is not the most important thing in Prototype series, it's still worth to mention it. The thing is, the first title had a peculiar story about hazardous and unpredictable virus mixed with a detective investigation of Alex about Gentek and his own past. It was pretty interesting and innovative. However, in Prototype 2 it was dropped to a simple family drama. Plus, the protagonist of the first title now became an antagonist, and it could be an interesting twist but the game barely explains his motives, so in the end Alex ends up to be a simple villain who is evil because he is evil.
All in all, just like its predecessor Prototype 2 is not a perfect game but it's a pretty good one and definitely worth at least one playthrough, especially if you liked the first title and look for more action.
RADNET Access Pack
A relatively small DLC which adds challenges similar to the first game with the rewards for them in the form of skins, game tweakers, and development videos. Though it is a nice addition, there are several problems with the challenge events: there are too few of them and most are pretty unbalanced. You will likely finish all of them in under an hour and getting platinum in most of them with max upgrades barely requires any skills, while few other make you do precise 3D pixel hunting to get it. Though this DLC is not that bad, it has some substantial flaws and really isn't worth 10$. Nevertheless, most of the players will buy it as a part of Prototype collection package, and in this case the DLC is ok, especially if the pack itself is on the discount.

Back when I played this 5-ish years ago, I absolutely enjoyed it; it was one of my all-time favorite games to just play casually because there's a lot of fun to be had in the brutal carnage that this game wants you to do.
However, with the failure that this game was on launch and the shut down of the company that made it as a consequence, it has not received any update for the longest time and is now in a state of complete unplayability.
10 seconds in trying to launch the game hard-crashes, and the only way to fix it is by meddling with properties every. single. time.
If Radical Entertainment came back from the dead and fixed this or released Prototype 3, I would absolutely recommend it again, but as it is right now you literally can't play it if you don't use windows 7, so disregarding how much of an amazing game this is otherwise, don't waste your money on it. It doesn't even work.

The two minor issues and the fixes:
- 1. Crash as the game starts loading up. There are more than one solution that you can find in the guides section. For me, limiting the game to 8 cores in task manager did the trick.
- 2. Operation Flytrap softlock. Just limit the game to 30 FPS (you can use your GPU drivers for this on the go, just alt-tab out of the game) and restore checkpoint in the menu to respawn the dudes.

BRING BACK PROTOTYPE
Man... why did Activision have to pull the curtains on Radical Entertainment. Having produced what is in my opinion one of the greatest comic-book video games of all time in Hulk:Ultimate Destruction , I unfortunately didn't get the pleasure of playing the spiritual successor to the game in Prototype as I didn't own any capable PC nor a seventh-gen console at the time but man was I hella hyped for its sequel after its announcement - and it delivers baby!
That feeling of ULTIMATE EMPOWERMENT is back and boy does it feel so good! You're put in the shoes (and super-powered alien body) of James Heller who's on a warpath for previous protagonist Alex Mercer after he finds that his daughter has been killed by the virus. Story's pretty meh overall, you don't particularly care too much for his cause especially considering how hypocritical it all becomes in the grand scheme of things but that's okay because you have one helluva good gameplay time through it!
You're given access over the course of the game , to a number of different abilities of which all can be switched at whim and upgraded with a plethora of perks and new abilities. New York is your free-roam sandbox oyster and you can do with it what you will - jumping across the map like a flying squirrel and tethering, ripping, slicing up all the military vehicles/personnel of your enemies in HUGE arenas of destruction is just sheer unfiltered fun. The sound design that comes along with it is satisfying and the graphics even now are still serviceable! I'm aware that they did do a remaster later on for the PS4+XBONE however i don't think its even necessary and it was terrible done anyway by Activision
I really hope that Activision may somehow revisit this DIAMOND of a franchise or even just bring the team under Radical back together to produce another game in this vein! It's just the ultimate sandbox fun.

>strong independent black (wo)man
>CONSUME BIOMASS
My favorite. Don't take it seriously, laugh when you're supposed to take it seriously, and drive a tank into a crowd of zombies. Then watch dozens of random NPCs run into the back of your now unmoving tank and die from, I'm assuming, ghosts. Because there is nothing there to hurt them, except themselves. Then jump out of your tank, and drop a helicopter full of scientists who want to fix the genepool via chemically castrating poor people. I love this game.
Uh, just know it'll take some tinkering for it to work, as it's a shit port and Activison killed the developer, much like they killed everyone's respect for Activision.

That being said, I really didn't enjoy this game as much as I thought I would.
You know that Edward Norton Hulk movie where he fights Abomination? That's this entire game.
You play as James Heller and early in the game you meet Alex Mercer. The player character of the first game. Long story short, he infects Heller with the same virus that he has himself. Deemed the “Mercer Virus” or as it was called previously, the Blacklight virus. He doesn't really state why he has done what he's done. Nevertheless, the events of the game unfold. [spoiler]This is preamble to the reveal that Mercer has been giving select people the virus to create his own army of “Evolved”. This happens after the first couple of missions and the rest of the game is centered around this.[/spoiler]
I did mention the Hulk specifically because of the game “The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction”—which is awesome, one of my favorites—and this game is made by the same people. [For some reason I equate that game being on Gamecube the most despite it being on all the consoles of that time.] Regardless, “Radical Entertainment” shortly had layoffs after this game's [Prototype 2] release. They still exist and are currently (Nov 2020) owned by Activision. But I think I can see what went wrong with this title.
The reason there is no Prototype 3 is pretty clear to me.
- Technical issues such as crashing at launch—as in, startup and soft-locking during any, but especially early missions are not good signs. Prototype 1 has issues as well. And not just technical, but it has those as well. At least in the PC port. The resolution is locked to 720p and needs to be resolved with an .ini fix. Prototype 2 has the issue I listed up top.
- Both games are exceedingly tedious and lack variety in their mission structure.
- I believe it being open-world actually hurts the pacing of the narrative.
- Furthering that point, the story is intensely mediocre. I ended up skipping cut-scenes due to lack of interest.
- The combat is often needlessly obstinate. The lock-on for weapons or throwing objects will change mid attack or lock on to things that aren't even on the screen but rather where the character is facing. Sometimes it'd do the opposite seemingly for no discernible reason.
- Sometimes consuming enemies took multiple presses of the button. Heller seemed to sometimes be able to consume on the run and other times needed to stop moving. It didn't seem to be based on enemy type either. Consuming is effectively the main mechanic in the world. Both for healing and for objective completions. Seems it would have made sense to get that bit right.
- The side missions are just as boring as the main missions. Lair takedowns, Field ops (which equate to opportunity kills) and finding blackboxes. Just a regular ol' collectible.
To be clear, there are a lot of good ideas here.
Topical issues aside regarding viruses, I think the premise of a viral outbreak is a good setting for a game. I personally really found uncovering the mystery and nature of the virus in The Division to be one of its stronger features. But in Prototype, it's really not terribly interesting. The virus essentially makes you into a zombie-esque thing or makes you into a superhuman. Like an approximation of Carnage the symbiote from Spider-Man but with the versatility of T-1000.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2275985424
The combat is... while a tad goofy, has its moments. “Phase One” brawlers to “Phase Two”—not-Bane super-soldiers. (The enemy has neon blue tubes going into the back of their massive head. If they aren't inspired by Bane, call me incredulous.) All the way up to Juggernauts and Goliaths—small building sized enemies. They all have certain ways to deal with them. And the weapon selection is quite decent. Though, once you get to the more interesting weapons, the game is almost over. You'll have claws, a big blade, a whip, big rock hands that you can smash tanks with. But these all take time to unlock.
Web of Intrigue.
This was one of the more interesting ideas in Prototype 1. When you [strike]ate[/strike] consumed people, you gain their memories. Filling out a “Web of Intrigue”. Though, it never really goes anywhere interesting. Consuming DNA also gets you to level up. It's pretty much that simple.
The stealth often makes no sense.
Because you're a symbiote of sorts, you can change into the people you consume. Strait down to their DNA. This is [strike]sometimes[/strike] often required to get into facilities and complete other objectives. This task is repeated ad nauseam. Changing your disguise also aids in escape. Made easier than the first game by clearly prompting you when you've broken line of sight. Prototype 1 has real issues with that.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2275937133
Heller (as well as Mercer) are people who can literally throw cars at helicopters. While running. On the SIDE of a skyscraper. While being shot with missiles. Why on Earth would a steel door stop them? In the rare case that subtlety is needed—as in, to not scare away a target that you need the memories of, it makes sense. But these moments often end in chaos anyways. Just like every mission. Better to simply barge in.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2275937158
You're also able to stealth consume people not being watched. Immediately taking their position. It just seems like there was so many ideas about stealth that ultimately came to nothing because everything ends with a giant monster throwing helicopters regardless.
THE GIST:
It's really not that bad of a game. But it's not very good either. And I would be remiss were I to honestly recommend the game. I often found myself wishing the game were over sooner. I saw it through to the end for due diligence. On sale, it's a fun jaunt if you don't take it too seriously. I think the series also has an interesting [real life] history. Ultimately, I think it's just a missed opportunity.

-Alex Mercer
???? Description:
Prototype 2 is a classic hack and slash open-world game, where you play as an almighty mutant whose purpose and goal is to find his family. The game is very fast-paced and enjoyable. By the time you have unlocked all the abilities, only then you will experience it’s full potential.
???? Plot:
The story is good/decent, but I can not compare it to it’s predecessor (Prototype 1). The characters have a very humane approach to the world and its current tragedies, thus giving it a special spark that I personally admire. It’s the conclusion of the Alex Mercer arc, so grab your drinks and enjoy the adventure.
????️ Gameplay:
There is not much to say about it. Blood, gore, extreme powerful attacks and mutations are all involved ready to be explored. The abilities scale as time progresses, with a simple skill tree that even a toddler can understand. The key to combat is the utilization of all the abilities, so feel free to explore. Gamepad is highly recommended !
????️ Side Notes:
The game is very old, that’s why lots of complains about troubleshooting problems exist, which to be honest is understandable. All you have to do is to search for answers either on YouTube or in the steam community.
???? References:
I suggest you check the below guide as it’s proved to be beneficial for many people:
https://steamcommunity.com/id/TheSpartan1337/recommended/115320/
???? Verdict:
Prototype 2 is a fun game, unfortunately with many technical problems. It requires a remake or at least a more polished version asap. It's a real shame that a 3rd game was never developed, but we don’t loose hope.

It was an ok experience and at least you get to see how the story ends. Plus, there is still something very satisfying about jumping from 300 meters in the air and then bombing with your 2 big fists into the ground and make a tremor with spikes coming out of it.
I did complete it with all the collectibles, and I think I only missed some challenges, but if you're bored one weekend, this should give you some good time.
Gameplay is decently challenging and the combos you can make with your weapons are pretty satisfying to pull, plus you go against yourself from the first game. The boss battles are pretty fun, although I admit the final boss battle was pretty underwhelming, especially because you get checkpoints between the battle stages.
If it was all one battle from the beginning till the end without checkpoints it would have been more interesting.
However, as aforementioned, decent gameplay, decent story, main character is a cool guy, I had worse experiences than this for more hours and money invested (buying the game). I give it a passable grade of 6/10.

I had fun with the game, and it's not too short or too long for my taste. But I am unsure if I can recommend it, mainly because it probably requires some fixes to even run properly, let alone fixing game breaking bugs. So be cautious, maybe make use of the 2 hour return policy.
Now to a more detailed review:
Story:
The Story is overall functionable, but lacks in some parts. Alex Mercer is the Antagonist, and this is a mistake. The way he is portrayed here is completely different to [Prototype], where he was the Protagonist. All the time I am playing I thought: He wouldn't do this. ANY of this. James Heller, the Protagonist, seems contradictory sometimes, but I can't put my finger on it. I just find it strange how he talks or what he says sometimes. Other than that, he's alright I guess.
But one problem I have, and I also have with the first one, is that you can kill civilians without any consequences. He doesn't even react to monsters and infected tearing them apart. There is an effort in the story missions and cutscenes to show that he cares about the people, I mean he also lost his family in the outbreak, and he stops a troop of Blackwatch Soldiers from killing some, and later in the story he tries to prevent new outbreaks, but other than that he is totally fine with killing them himself. I tried to avoid it as much as possible, but couldn't all the time. And him not reacting to anything is strange. The first one had this problem too, especially because in the whole city civilians are running amongst the infected and monsters, so you can't avoid it. But the story works a bit better, since Alex Mercer is portrayed more ruthless and has some other goals. Still a problem though, just not as bad as in this game. The Ending wasn't satisfying for me and part of that is the annoying Boss Fight.
I have a problem with most Boss Fights in Gaming, and this one is a perfect example. I have to use certain weapons to harm him in each phase, I have to press the right buttons in quicktime events, and do that 5 times or so until done. And then the credits play. Cool...
Gameplay:
Running around, expecially with the upgrades is a lot of fun for me. I enjoyed that in the first one, and also in Games like Saints Row IV. The Map is small enough, but not too small, to make that a good way to travel around and find stuff and get to the missions quickly.
The weapon wheel is alright, you can access everything pretty fast and change it in realtime. The weapons themselves are diverse, you can e.g. choose between claws and a whip, amongst other things, and they all have their (dis)advantages. I end up normally with the same 2 I always use, but that is because of me, every weapon has it's place and usage.
Collectibles:
There are a few collectibles lying around and it's relatively easy to find them, they aren't exactly marked on the map, but try to figure out yourself, I think the hints are good enough to get it.
They provide a bit more of the story and events taking place, I found that a nice idea.
Side Missions:
There are some Side Missions, ones that require you to hack things, track enemies or just kill a bunch of objectives (I don't want to spoil too much). The missions are reasonably varied, although I wished that one formula wasn't that often and instead a bit different. It can feel tedious, but that comes down to the player I would say. I enjoy busy work in most games, it keeps me, well, busy and I can watch YouTube while at it.
Unfortunately there are no challenge runs like in the first one, where you had to fly certain distances, collect stuff, run through checkpoints, kill certain amount of enemies with x weapon and so on. That's not here and I am disappointed in that regard. Unfortunately we won't get a third game, where they could have brought that back.
That lowers the game time a bit compared to the first one.
Upgrades:
All in all the upgrades are good, you can get more health, damage resistance, new abilities, make your weapons stronger and so on. You can get them by consuming certain enemies, leveling up and completing side missions, so it's worth to do everything there is. They can make a lot of difference, especially in hard mode.
I needed to go to NewGame+ to get fully upgraded, because I couldn't get enough XP anymore, but that also help with getting the Achievement for Hard Game, so I am ok with it.
Enemies:
There are a lot of different enemies, and some new ones. Soldiers and Infected (cannon fodder), Blackwatch Soldiers (different ranks, quite effective in the beginning), Hunters, Special Soldiers, Goliaths, etc. Some are a bit annoying for me, but they are well designed and have good variety in their attacks and weaknesses. There are also Tanks, APCs and Helicopters.
What I find great is that in some missions you can see that the Soldiers and Blackwatch Soldiers have personalities, they are not just faceless guys and all evil, but mere normal guys who do their job (to different degrees, there are also some evil ones). Of course that can lead to not enjoy to kill them, since they all could have families and stuff like this, but didn't for me. They are still your enemy, but a bit more fleshed out.
Also a great thing is that Blackwatch is shown to be very effective. The battles you can witness and take part in, between them and the infected show how good they can be. They use the Tanks and Helis and their manpower to combat the infected in a reasonable way. In one mission you accompany them and you make your way trough the streets with them.
The only enemy they can't beat is basically you, but other than that they can stand their ground.
Graphics:
They are a bit outdated, but since it came out 2012, it's not that bad. I remember back then to have some games that looked better, but it also has to display hundreds of enemies and projectiles and other physics at the same time, and it runs very well. So I would say it's alright and I also didn't get the feeling of uglyness I have in many pre-2005 games.
Level-Design:
The 3 parts of the map all have their differences and they are explained in the story and the effects are shown. Sure, most buildings look the same, but like I said in the graphic section, you can only do so much, so it doesn't worry me. There are enough differences with skyscrapers, bridges, metro stations and traintracks, parks, streets, etc. And you can navigate pretty easily around there.
So in summary, it is a good game in of itself, and can be a lot of fun, but also has some tedious moments. I don't think it's for anyone, but since you also can't buy the first one in some countries (I could get it through a key seller, but that is not guaranteed to work) it might be worth a look.
But I won't recommend it for the steam reviews, because of the bugs and glitches and starting error you can get, and it's bad that they still sell the game without letting people know that they might need to fix it and even maybe not be able to.
So be cautious, read about the fixes you might have to do, try it maybe out in the first 90 min, and if it doesn't work, refund it. And if it works: Have fun!

After 8 years the worst ones arent fixed.
The claw mission still puts a brick wall infront of 99% of the game.
Dai katana and this game really struggle between eachother to prove which one was made by the most incompetence.
So everyone, gather around and watch the freak.

I have got this to run in the past on my old 4 core i5 processor but have not even managed to get it running on my 8 core Ryzen machine. Even if you manage to get it to work though, the game is plagued with bugs and issues everywhere and Activision/Radical no longer support this game so there are no fixes being made. Please take this game off steam!
