Sound 7 / 10
Bedienung 7 / 10 (man muss sich etwas dran gewöhnen)
Atmosphäre 8 / 10
* Spielspaß 9 / 10
* PVE Spielern so wie ich auch einer bin, empfehle ich mit ein paar Freunden einen eigenen Server zu starten und dort dann das Spiel in ruhe zu erleben. Glaubt mir es gibt Genug Zombies, da braucht man nicht auch noch PVP.

I'm something of a sucker for zombie survival games, I play quite a lot of them and am dissapointed more often than not. I knew of this game for a long time, but thought it was just another one of those failed betas, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Don't let the graphics deceive you, this game is an expertly crafted survival masterpiece.
Project Zomboid is an unbelievably punishing game, and it barely lessens in difficulty as you progress, as only a slight lapse in judgement or a single bout of carelessness will send your character that you've been playing on for hours, days or weeks right into the garbage. I have lost characters that I've spent days on simply because I was hungry and decided to eat an unknowingly poisonous berry that I found while foraging, instead of waiting to get back home and eat some food I had prepared in advance. Or another time where instead of luring a single zombie out into the open to kill it safely, as is tradition for me, I swing the door open and get a quick bite on my hand, sealing my fate.
Zomboid has a number of surprisingly indepth systems, like their Cooking, Mechanics, Carpentry, Metalworking, Foraging, First Aid, Trapping, and a few others. Each of them has their uses, and become dramatically more useful as you further your skill with them. Go from finding sticks and stones as a forager, to frogs, edible berries and mushrooms. Make poultices with wild plants that you find to help with various ailments. As a low-level mechanic, your car has effectively one life, you bust it up and its useless to you. As you raise your skill by stripping and repairing cars around the world, you can repair your car to good as new with the right materials. As a basic Carpenter and Metalworker, you'll be reserved to only barricading windows against the undead. Break down enough wooden and metal objects and you'll be skilled enough to build your haven in the middle of the woods from nothing but wood and nails.
All being said, Zomboid rewards you for playing how YOU want to play, not how the game wants you to. Thats because the game doesn't force you down a specific path, except for the path of death, because you will die... alot. But every death will teach you a thing or two, and over time you will go from a clueless walking sack of meat to an intelligent and skilled sack of meat.

- Eating food gone bad and die of food poisoning
- Sharing the last can of dog food with your friends before ending eachothers life in a shotgun mexican standoff
- Getting crushed by the fridge you insisted on carrying to your base because you accidentally vaulted over the staircase railing
- Getting bit in the ass by a sneaky zombie, thus ending your miserable life
- Forgetting to turn off the oven after you're done cooking and come back only to see your base(and all your sweet loot) lit up with the flames of forgetfullness
- Accidentally walking on top of the campfire when you and your friends are cooking, severely scorching your body and ending your life in agonizing pain
- Tripping over a fence/stick and get moshpitted by an angry swarm of undead
- Getting your very experienced survivor with great bite/scratch defense bit (with great emotional pain) on your only weakspot
- Accidentally drive too fast and murder your entire group of friends in a terrible car crash
..And many other fun ways!

Night 3 and 4 at the mall - I was making great progress in the mall. It started to get quieter and I started to feel safe. Clearing it with that shotgun and ammo that I found was so satisfying. Thought it did nearly get me killed. My shotgun jammed just as I was going to kill a zombie at point blank range. Luckily I could hit the zombie in the face with it and distanced myself again.
While I was looting the BBQ store, I found the holy grail that we have been looking for quite some time. It's the magazine that teaches us how to use generators. In my enthusiasm I radioed back home, shouting with joy.
Ché, Anvi and Peet were chuffed and told me to rest there one more night. Come dawn they were going to head towards me and fetch me by car.
I was exhausted but exited to see my friends again so I went back to my tent. I made sure I barricaded the storage room I was camped in and put the shotgun next to my sleeping bag. I actually slept really well since the first time in ages.
The next day we all were chatting and laughing on the walkietalkies while they were heading to the mall. For the very first time in ages, I really felt alive. Anvi souped up one of the cars making him drive like a speed demon. It was funny but also nerve wrecking to hear him nearly kill himself while swerving out of the away from the zombies while racing the rest of the crew.
When they arrived the mood was still joyful. Perhaps I was too optimistic and gave them a false sense of security. We put the magazine and some supplies I gathered in the trunk of the car. We decided to do a quick look before we left. We all to separate parts of the mall trying to find some more valuable loot.
It wasn't long before we could hear screaming and shouting coming from the south side of the mall. It was Anvi, he got boxed in on the escalator and was panicking and screaming for helm. I ran there as fast as I could, and readied my shotgun. Just as I walked around the corner I saw that my friend was being mauled and eaten by the undead. I was filled with rage and started to blast them. Perhaps I could still save him.
The zombies around him were dead, though not much was left of him. I couldn't bare the sight, so I turned around and tried to find the rest of my friends. I heard another groan and looked behind my shoulder. It was Anvi he was shambeling towards me while almost tripping over his own intestines. I couldn't shoot him, even though he turned into a zed.
I started to run to my other friends and saw Ché, he saw my grim look and didn't ask any questions. Just as we made eye contact we heard more screams of pain. Before we could react and figure out where he was they stopped. We eventually found his eaten corpse with his duffel bag just behind the counter with the popcorn machine. The zeds were no where to be seen.
We fled to the car and drove back to our base. We didn't say a word during this ride. I felt terrible and very guilty. It's because of me and my stupid idea of living in the mall, that my friends are gone. I shouldn't have stayed there for so long and shouldn't have said it was safe.
I'm going to drink that bottle of bourbon I found and hopefully drown my sorrows.
Tomorrow will be another day in this hell infested world and I cannot let it consume me too.

leaving the graphics out for a moment, the game is rewarding and challenging to play, thankfully you can change settings of the sandbox experience that you want to play, want a easy game? no problem just lower difficulty and increase loot rate, want more hardcore experience? increase the chance of getting infection and increase zombie count.
this game is VERY good, just make sure to set up the game as BUILD 41 to get most recent update on beta by going to
steam > right click on project zed > properties > beta > build 41 or higher. enjoy :)

Let's just start with this: Zombies are popular enemies in games, because they enable lazy developers. You don't need a story, but if you want one you can just rip off any established zombie lore. Your AI can be barebones with zombies that just path to the nearest player and attack once they get into melee. The lack of sophistication isn't a bug, it's a feature, and so what if the path-finding is easily exploited and there's no strategy at all. They're zombies. They're supposed to be stupid.
Then you just give the player a gun, send wave after wave of zombies at the player and throw your shitty game up on Steam and hope someone buys it for $2.50 because they want trading cards.
This is not one of those games.
This is a game that puts monumental amounts of effort into every tiny aspect of the game. It is the most immersive zombie game I've ever played, and the fact that it accomplishes that in an isometric 3rd person perspective is nothing short of amazing. The way it limits your view to the direction your character is looking is done incredibly well, and it even plays with that system a bit, adjusting the viewing angle depending on your character's traits, health, and the visual conditions.
Each zombie has randomized stats in terms of how perceptive they are, how long they remember the player after you leave their line of sight, and how fast they move. Some zombies are smart enough to path around obstacles and some will bang on the closed side of a double door even if the other door is open. This creates opportunities for the player to split up zombies by abusing these differences. If there's a pack of 6 zombies you can slowly creep to them until a few notice you, then retreat and dispatch just those. Or if you have a big horde on you, you can run them through a building so some of them get stuck on windows and furniture, giving you spacing to take them out in smaller groups.
All of this leads to a combat system that isn't based around twitch aiming or muscle memory, but rather a decision making based combat system. Where, when and how you fight matters a lot more than which weapon you have or what your character's stats are. An obese weakling can kill 100s of zombies under the right circumstances and a god-like character with max stats can die to a single zombie sneaking up behind them.
It's things like this that really give the game the most authentic zombie experience I've played. Wading into zombies to try to kill them will just result in you joining them instead. Using a combination of stealth, distraction, and discretion is the best way to survive.
Adding to the immersion is how in depth each of the games systems are. Everything from constructing a wall to making a potato salad lands in the sweet zone of being complex enough to be interesting but not so complex as to be overwhelming.
But the really amazing thing about PZ is how layered the experience is.
At first, you're just going house to house, killing zombies and raiding pantries for food. Eventually you master the combat system and positioning. You'll live long enough for your character to experience exhaustion and fatigue and eventually you'll learn to master those systems, too. You'll move onto base building and die to the helicopter the first time it happens. Then you live long enough for water and power to fail. Then you get to the point where all the easy places to loot are looted and you have to decide to try riskier places, or perhaps work on making your own food via farming, foraging, or trapping. Survive that long, and the season will begin to change and with it, new problems. Long term nutrition starts to matter, as even if you are satisfying your character's hunger, they may be losing weight every day and in danger of wasting away. Then winter hits. Survive the winter and you can survive anything.
Now the sandbox is open to you. Do you want to max every stat? Build the ultimate base? Master mechanics and build the ultimate zombie killing vehicle? Or perhaps take back your hometown from the undead, no matter how long it takes? It's up to you. Just don't get too cocky, because no matter what you've built and how many zombies you've killed, you are always 1 bite away from joining their ranks.
And even then, there's more. Try challenge runs with negative traits, or crank up zombie numbers and infection chances, or even enable sprinters, if you dare. Dive into steam workshop and download mods to change the game or add new content. There's always another challenge to take on.
At present, the beta 41 version of the game (the version you should be playing) only has remote couch co-op. This will eventually change, however, and when it does multiplayer will open up a whole new dimension.
All in all, Project Zomboid is a superb game, but I'd be remiss if I didn't point out some flaws. The game is still very much in early access development. There are a few things about it and it's systems that are a bit wonky as a result. A big criticism is how slow skills level, although in custom sandbox mode you can add an xp multiplier if you want to.
Also some skills like carpentry are well fleshed out and feel vital, whereas electronics feels almost forgotten and there's very little reason to advance in it. There aren't any huge bugs I've encountered, but sometimes the interface can be a bit odd. There's also a lack of polish sometimes, like for example there are no animations for sitting in a chair or sleeping in a bed.
But all in all, the rest of the game is so fun, so satisfying that it's easy to overlook these things, especially because this is a $15 game by an indy developer, not a $60 +micro-transactions AAA title.

I've not recommended this game for a very simple reason: It's not good enough.
It has every element that draws a hardcore survivalist in: it has complex systems and features that make the world feel real, and it does a fantastic job of putting you in the shoes of a survivor in a zombie outbreak. BUT, it's just not enough.
To draw attention to the disappointment I feel let me illustrate how long it has taken the Devs to do anything of note: There are no NPC's (which is slated for build 43 and developments currently in 41. Build 40 was stable in Oct 2018, and V41 started in October 2019 where it remains now...)
It's utterly unacceptable in my opinion to ride the flow of early access in order to develop things that should take half the time. It's not like PZ has funding issues. The game has been heavily respected for years now with a good playerbase and I imagine equally solid sales. It's just unfortunate to see something that could've been the defining game of a sub-genre merely be a back marker.
Whats ironic about this is that if they just didn't take years to implement game changing and game enchancing systems, I would wholeheartedly recommend this game. Yet, where PZ is right now is where it should have been YEARS ago.

This game has graphics like Rimworld which means it's sprite based and a top down view - fairly primitive but this game is about the story and game play, not the visuals. It gets deeper and deeper with every release in terms of game play, finish, and the ability to tell a story while killing thousands of zombies with a bat, stone knife, or assault rifle.
Mod support is already very strong with dozens if not hundreds. Despite one (large and being expanded) map the replay-ability is 100%. There are additional maps available via mods, but those aren't needed even after many, many hours of play. Developer communication, despite being a small team, is often, honest, and welcome.
If you love killing zombies and like indie games this is one for you. It reminds me of other indie games like Rimworld and Factorio and I strongly recommend it. I paid full price and they will take my money again if they if ever release a DLC after releasing it (which is a ways away).

When I bought this game I was living with my parents and I was still studying. I bought it hoping to be able to play it full in a few years. It's been like 11 years, I live in my own home, now I work instead of studying, and still waiting to play a finished product.
But the game is still an unfinished product, a promised campaign that still does not exist, without NPC, a multiplayer that they did not want to do but did it to make more money. I will not trust my money in this study again, I do not know in what they have invested the money earned with the game but it seems to indicate that either they only want to spend 1% of what is generated in finishing the game or they do not know how to organize themselves to finish what they started.

For new players I'd recommend the following:
1. You can't save the game manually. The game saves automatically when you quit to menu or desktop. There is a mod (MiniStatPanel & Manual Save) which allows you to manually save the game (single save file). After each saving I suggest you go to the savegame folder (%UserProfile%zomboid) and make a backup of the current save game folder. This way - if you die - you can prevent starting all over again because the game will also save itself on death.
2. The game is good with mods. I use almost all beta41 mods and I think almost all of them are compatible. No need to manage mod load order. However, I think when you add a mod midgame you'll have to start over again to make the new mod work.
Game is a 8/10 for me. Hope the devs will put more work in it in the future because the concept is really worth it.

of note are the
1 Incredible cooking system: that can take account of nutrition in what you are eating (or not it can be turned off) basically you can make a burger or casserole or bake whatever you have on hand or boil the choices of cooking here are near endless as the ingredients (cooked rat and vegetable burgers 6 months into the apocalypse must start looking good) of note is also the rather robust fishing system. whether you farm fish or forage it's up to you how to feed yourself after all the food runs out (item respawns are by default off but can be turned on so you can reloot hoses if you want to customize it that way)
2 good crafting system: this accounts for a majority of surviving in the late game as gas and water shuts off you need to find a way to deal with cooking and watering yourself and possibly even a base.
3 surprisingly well made construction system: make a base or build inside a house and take it over the choices are nearly as endless you can even pick up and move furniture including sinks which can be hooked up to rainbarrels within a few tiles and up 1 level. I have a full exterior kitchen in case I accidentally leave food in an oven that is turned on (fire) with running water and hooked up to a generator to power the electric appliances if needed. (generators inside a building will as expected fill it up with carbon monoxide and eventually kill you) and a 3 floor base with all exterior surfaces plastered to look good and painted black.
I strongly recommend If you do end up getting this game to try out the workshop mods of particular note to me was Brita's Weapons mod and the car towing mod both of those are quite excellent just make sure you have the ones for your current version as 41 can only be accessed through the betas tab atm.
at the time of writing this and as a long term owner of the game I have to give it a solid 9.5/10 and once 41 goes multiplayer would give a 10/10 would buy again.

Plus, on a bigger scale, the RP potential in this game is phenomenal! During my last run I roleplayed as a bride armed with a shotgun facing a whole horde of slow scramblers in a bakery. I didn't last long but the thrill was incredible!
This is all at only 11 hours on Build 41 and i'm having a blast at the game! I think I came at the right time with the animation overhaul and I cannot wait to see what they'll do in the future.

4. Zombies like loud things
5. Zombie follow big boom
5. Zombie travel in herds
6. The building we're in sucks
7. Zombie like humans
8. They hug hard and kiss with their teeth
9. Buddy learns that he and me are currently human
10. Buddy's ultimate retardo weapon is shotty
11. More big bang more zombies
And thus ends the story of Sir Mac and his buddy Tac, they were swarmed and proceed to have snuggle with a struggle with the horde that ends in their deaths

This game, is more than just a game. It is a crucible of patience, a gauntlet of skill, it's a living representation of the will to survive. Against all odds you will struggle to survive; you will fight. You will cry. You will die. And every death will make you stronger.
To this game, I owe a large part of my identity, because without this game, I would have never realized who I really am, and for that I am forever thankful. I love the community this game has garnered, I've met a lot of good people. I've created a lot of content and had the time of my life doing so.
I forsee great things for this game in the future, and do so believe that it will stand the test of time.

Still in development and half baked but fun to waste few hours in it. Has a big workshop community so it's mod friendly. Visually nothing amazing but games like this have their charm. Multiplayer works but not in all builds, more enjoyable with friends but that's to be expected.
I'll write few things that I didn't like in this but probably can change with mods. Firearms are loud, if you fire them, you are basically screwed unless you have a vehicle to run away. No way to silence the weapons, so you have to use melee which gets you exhausted/injured/killed. Basically if you fire once, all zombies on map run to you. UI is bad, little info on vital stats, only some blinking icons when tired/hungry/injured, needs way more info than that. You get used to looting UI but that could be done better.
That's about it. I'm sure you can make it perfect with mods, the way you want it but felt like sharing some info on un-modded game. Try it if you like these old school looking games or zombie survival in general but don't expect more than surviving and being a pack mule. ;]

PROS:
-Many in-game systems to help the player survive (crafting, building, 1st aid, electrical, ect..)
-Huge, detailed map
-Vehicles + in-depth vehicle maintenance system
-New weather system looks great
-Multiplayer!
-Good soundtrack + sound design
-The modding scene for this game is alive & well
CONS:
-New updates, like the zombies, come slowly but they do come.
-Your general fitness / strength skills level up far too slowly in my opinion. Ain't nobody got time for that.
-No NPCs (Yet) The devs promised this ages ago, did a decent amount of work on NPCs & then shelved it to work on other things. Hopefully they get back to that at some point, but who knows?
-Somewhat steep learning curve. This game can seem a bit unfair to new players since the zombies are so numerous. Surviving for a long time takes a lot of trial-and-error

But the thing is, this all applies for the in-development Build 41 version of the game. Build 40 is utterly awful, which goes into why they decided to effectively remake the game for Build 41. The only thing that made Build 40 even playable was the multiplayer, since I was able to, for a short while, have a blast with friends.
It's been almost a year, and we've been planning to play Build 41 since god-knows-when. But after months and months of 'it's not ready yet,' and the absence of any planned release date, I'm just tired. I've given up hope on waiting for this to release. Hopefully I'll be able to enjoy this game in the future, but for now, it's not worth it. Just spend your money on something more complete, and if you do know of a game that is similar to this one but that allows me to actually play with friends, I'd really appreciate it if you told me.

WAYS YOU CAN SURVIVE:
SCAVENGE! Search for what supplies are left. Not a solution that can be used forever, but good when you need some quick supplies or are starting out.
BARRICADE! Zombies about to break in? Need just a little more time to jimmy that window open to escape? Or maybe you just want some extra protection. Well, fear no more with barricading! Just grab a heavy object, and put in front of a door! Or use planks and nails to keep that baby shut for a looong time.
FARM! Take a trip to the country, grow food in or on the outskirts of the many towns, as scavenging wont last forever.
BE HEALTHY! You can freeze to death, be lacerated, overheat, break/fracture a bone, fall from a 10 story building, become zombie food, and get bitten. Getting a zombie infection is almost always going to result in slow DEATH followed shorty by ZOMBIFICATION.( There is NO cure. Seriously, you get bit/get a zombie infection its game over.) Being scratched is most likely not going to make you a deadhead (But it can happen!) while being bit is certain death. Apart from that, infections can happen where you get a fever and sick but with medicine and/or good care to yourself you can make it through. Fracturing/breaking a bone requires a splint to heal, and that part will be mostly ineffective for the healing process. You can guess what extreme tempature treatments are, cool down/warm up. Changing seasons are a problem too.
FIGHT OR FLIGHT! If you want a chance at surviving, you must quickly examine a fight/situation and determine what is best. A group of two or more zombies and you have a butter knife? Flight. Have one zombie and a butter knife? Fight. (If you have to get past it.) Or just forget these and make your own solution. Go around. Get the zombie's attention, hop through a window, wait for it to slither through then stomp its head in when its on the ground. The possibilities are endless.
Conclusion
It is a amazing game with so much to offer, and there are things like the lore, seasons, and farming i kinda glossed over, but its because you should experience the game. Just one thing. If you want to play this game then switch to build 41. Anyway, Bye!

Realistic Zombie Survival? Check
Hardcore Mechanics? Check
Replayability? Check
Playable in Potato Computer? Check
This game isn't for the faint of heart. You will die. You will suffer. You will experience food and water shortage if you don't plan well. You will experience your home being overrun by hordes of undead as you run away in fear of survival and lastly;
You will experience one of the best realistic zombie survival game you'll ever play.
Oh yeah, it has workshop support!
Cons:
- Potato graphics
- EXTREMELY RARE GAME BREAKING BUGS (like getting stuck with no way out)
- Slow development (The developers are just a small team, not an entire army of programmers, artists, or developers. Just small time)
- You're pretty much alone in the game unless you play multiplayer (in which setting up may/may not be an ass depending on your internet connection.
- In contrary to the last point, there's a workshop mod for NPC survivors but they're not really smart ngl.
Final message for people reading this:
Give it a try. It's not triple AAA games or epic hardcore battle but it is a reflection of what COULD happen if a zombie apocalypse happen.
Have a nice day :3

The game has a thriving community, and that community isn’t just celebrating a game they enjoy that’s fun but stagnant. They’re actively helping development, and often dealing with patches and upgrades at a speed you don’t see on titles of comparable size.
This latest Beta is work towards making Project Zomboid feel a little more alive and have a wider variety for everything. It's a foundation to bring even more big changes to Project Zomboid, with the new animation work in this build.
We have so many zombie games to choose from, yet most remain focused on action. Project Zomboid eschews all of that for thoughtful management and slow burning desolation and misery over jump scares. It’s not a typically fun game, but learning how to survive the upcoming zombie apocalypse is still a worthy way to while away the hours.
THE GOOD
- The level of complexity is amazing
- Zombie survival game in the truest sense
- You can develop an assortment of skills to aid your survival
- You really have to develop a proper zombie survival plan
THE BAD
- The combat is a little clunky
- This is a slow game
- Punishingly difficult

Even if the game looks like Sims 1 it give's you a great feeling of immersion. You're not some kind of superhero that pulverizes tons of undead with one punch or smth. You're starting to get scared when a group of 4 Zombies starts surrounding you, so you decide to run away and cry like a baby and then u try to hide inside a church only to get surrounded by 20 Zombies who got the holy mission from jesus himself to knock you down and eat your fat ass.
You decide to try again but you also die again. And again. A neverending cycle.
And nothing scares you more than the sound of an alarm after opening the backdoor of a supermarket.

Yeah sure, the graphics aren't Witcher 3 status, and the game sure isn't a FPS. However, what it lacks in visuals it HIGHLY makes up for with the raw game-play. This title you will easily find yourself sinking hours and hours into without even noticing.
With an undoubtedly un-matched crafting system and general building system, base building alone can take you months to fulfill or a couple of days, want a fortress? It's gonna take some time, want a cozy little cottage by the river and live off the land? It's more easily obtainable.
And don't get me started into the car mechanics, they really out did themselves there. You will need to monitor the status of your vehicle or vehicles if you want to survive properly. With essentially EVERY mechanic / operating function on the car it can be a bit mind boggling at how you're going to go at maintaining a vehicle especially when parts and tools are pretty rare... However once obtaining a vehicle it can be much nicer cruising the roads rather than walking as PZ's map is astonishingly HUGE, and seemingly endless (though it does have a border) Keep in mind if you do decide to fix up a vehicle, or hotwire one, etc... The dead can easily hear you driving down the road, so think twice about trying to bust into a car, especially if it still has an alarm system.
Looting in PZ has it's own atmosphere and feeling to it, once you learn the map layout a bit better or even loot a map of the surrounding area you can begin land marking your way around towns and scavenging a bit better. All areas have different types of loot, and with higher tiered loot comes higher risk. Keep that in mind before you try going into a military installment with little first aid equipment or even low protection.
You may be wondering why there are so many clothing types within the game, PZ utilizes a unique and down right complex infection system. If you are to take a nasty fall and you end up cutting yourself your wound can become infected if you do not seek proper medical supplies or monitor your bandaging. A simple dirty bandage can be all that stands between you and a slowly agonizing death.
Going off of infection PZ also has a transmission system. Transmission of what you ask? If you are bitten by a zombie you can basically just accept the fact that you are going to die. It may be a week, it may be two weeks, but once you are bitten you will most certainly not survive. This is why clothing coverage and type are an absolute MUST and even with good coverage you can still suffer a bite. Along with bites scratches are second to fatal but they are not a guaranteed death sentence. You can survive scratches, but if a bite is inflicted, you might as well find out what the bleach in the next house over tastes like, cause your story is finished.
If you do not already own this game, I implore you to make a purchase. And if you do give it a go make sure to run on the newest patch IWBUMS (IWILLBACKUPMYSAVE) You will NOT be disappointed.
TLDR;
10/10 Possibly the BEST zombie / survival game out there.
Game is even worth the full price.
I highly, highly recommend this title to anyone looking for a damn good Zombie game.

You can choose different classes ranging from fisherman, construction worker, policeman to several others each with their own unique skill sets. A fitness instructor for example has the ability to identify nutritional values of foods and the right amount of sustenance required. There's traits that contribute to your overall stats. A -4 negative trait of being a smoker for example will mean that you're allowed a +4 positive trait to balance it out. The abstinence of cigarettes will of course effect the character's mood. I find that these traits add more realism and epitomizes the struggle of an ordinary survivor. Weather, fear, hunger, sanity, fatigue and overall state of mind will effect how successful and effective actions are done. I can see why players spend hundreds of hours playing this game because of its meticulousness.

QUICK REVIEW
Best Description of this game is, Topdown 3D Ultra realistic Zombie survival RPG simulator/game w/Multiplayer included.
Requires quite a refined taste But,
Definitely recommend getting for an Unique zombie survival experience, playing the IWBUMS (Community Beta Testing) version. And its very worth your money even without discount.
Things to take note, Multiplayer for IWBUMS version is not out yet, thats why 9/10.
Classic version does have multiplayer, local/online, but lacks abit of the polish and immersion that the IWBUMS has.
So if you want a Co-Op experience you may want to hold out, But i highly recommend getting this to support the game,
as the game is in healthy development, & singleplayer is a great experience, and the classic Version is still good fun.
These guy's videos explains it quite well:

PROS / CONS
Pros
- Single Player scenarios (Different Challenges / plain old survival mode, good variety)
- Multiplayer (Local 4P splitscreen w/controller OR Online Multiplayer)
- Unique Player customization & Perks (Excellent Perk balancing, making things punishing & realistic)
- Realistic survival (Very Difficult, Crafting system quite interesting, interaction very expansive but not overly complicated)
- Unique Health system (Emotions, illness, Temperature, All Limbs interaction)
- Base Building (Nothing new or special, but done very very well)
- Constant updates & love from developers (From when the game released 2011 til now)
- Steam workshop (Tons of mods to suit your playstyle)
- Unique graphical game, Low PC requirements
Cons
- Tutorial needs more information (Doesn't teach the crafting)
- User Interface needs refining (Tho managing inventory is abit hard & needs gettin use to, I'm confident it will be upgraded in future)
- Early Access (Tho a very good game already, still has a very Long steady road to make it an ultimate game)
- Needs to implement Crossbow /Bow / Slingshot, maybe throwing spear.
- Needs to implement more vehicles, bikes / Bicycles.
MAIN REVIEW
I bought this game back in 2012, before it was on steam, As it had boast a unique multiplayer Zombie survival game.
Back then, i thought, it was pretty cool, but played only abit every few years.
Recently i saw a screenshot online, and thought, is that Project Zomboid? Booted up the game with the Beta Test, and i'm hooked.
Til this day, i think many games have tried to simulate this experience, but all fallshort.
Except for multiplayer the below information will be of IWBUMS version, which is opt in via game steam settings.
Gameplay
Before you start every game, you have to create a custom character, that survivor is link to that savefile and is not transferable to other games.
Customization is Basic, but has enough features to your liking, like gender, skin, Hair, Facial hair then clothing from head to bottom.
While selections are limited, during the game, you find a more expansive selection of clothes, and you can style / shave your hair.
After you pimp your looks, you pimp your character traits, a very unique system.
You can choose from a wide range of Occupations that give unique perks like easy lockpicking, weapon handling, experience in navigating forest, many more, Or you can be Unemployed T_T, which gives you some points to pick your own perks.
Perks range from getting more exp, increase stealth, increase strength, running, to reading faster, being able to see well in dark, eat or drink less, and MANY MORE.
These take up a no. of points depending on how useful they are, and when you lack points, you can choose to take Negative perks, to gain more points. Things like being obese, being deaf, things that balance your character, forcing you to choose wisely.
After that, strait of the bat, the game reminds you, you will die, which you find out the hard way is true.
Gamemodes are limited to Survival with 3 different difficulties, or various challenges like last stand or starting in a burning building.
Multiplayer
While not released for the IWBUMS Test version yet, the Classic version does have multiplayer available now.
This is great fun, as 4 player local Co-op is available with controllers, although abit harder to enjoy.
The true multiplayer experience is to be played via mouse & keyboard, so DO AIM FOR THE 4PACK.
Controls & User Interface
Controls are few, wasd to move, shift to Jog, C to sneak, Alt to Sprint, E to basic interact, R to basic reload, and 1 - 5 to cycle thru holstered equipment.
Almost everything else is done / interacted via Mouse click, right click brings up a list of interactions you can do on the object you moused over.
All very easy to understand.
In a survival game, you always start in your personal house, and then thats it, you fight for survival.
Play the way you want, Scavage houses, Run for your life, live in the forest, barracade your home, make your own home, or just keep travelling.
No matter what, they come for you.
The combat is very Punishing, Firearm aiming is based on ingame Skill, zombies only die when their heads are caved in.
And when they swarm, THEY SWARM.
Every Item has realistic weights, and backpacks, Fannypacks, storage all is a crucial part of the game.
If you cant find a bag to equip, chuck food or items into a plastic bag, that you have to use one hand to hold. or if you are macho you can use both hands to carry bags but then you cannot hold weapons.
You can quick slot 2 melee weapons/equipment to your belt, or carry 1 large weapon on your back.
All accessible via 1 - 3 on keyboard.
If you find a holster then you can quick holster a small firearm.
There are vehicles ingame, which are realistic in interaction, you can sleep in them, lock them, load stuff in the glove box or boot, you have to gas them, have a key or hotwire them (Provided you are trained), drive your friends, repair all individual parts, tires engines, and all the stuff thats inside a car, im not a mechanic IRL help.
The Survival system i mentioned is very indepth & interesting while not being overly complex, getting panic reduces accuracy, getting overheated makes you thirsty, getting cold gives you hypothermia, insomnia makes you weaker, Hunger & thirst is required at a realistic time, Illnesses make life harder, depending on your calories you get gain or lose weight.
Big actions are based on whether you are exhausted or not.
Now this part i LOVE.
Injuries will occur if you are not careful, you can protect yourself depending on the clothing you wear,
denim / thick clothing protects you, depending whether they cover that part of the body realistically, wear shorts and your knees are exposed.
For example i always start with sneakers as it allows quicker running, but when i was sprinting from a horde of Zs, i ran thru trees and Tripped,
Depending of how many or what clothing you equip, you also get sweaty, wet clothing.
Early Access
While that might scare you, it does seem that the game is still being updated as it is a small Indie Team. So expect slow progress toward completion, but you can tell this is a passion project so not to worry. Just support them!
CONCLUSION
I would love to purchase more copies for my friends to support the developers, But i have to wait until they release the multiplayer for the latest update, which i'm sure is quite soon, once they've done all the critical patches.
Still don't let that deter you from buying this game during sales or even now, it is definitely a unique cheap game, worth your money and time.
I really hope they implement Crossbow /Bow / Slingshot, maybe throwing spear and more vehicles like bikes / Bicycles.
Purchase and support the Game!

I highly recommend this game and it does get updates pretty regularly, despite what some reviews might say. If you enjoy Micromanagement combined with survival choices then this is the game for you.
If you have friends to play with this game becomes 100 times more fun, but that's just my two cents on the matter.

I understand that reworking the engine entirely is an huge undertaking, but we've been waiting for a stable BETA build for nearly 2 years. The concept is fucking visionary when you think that they started all this shit in 2012, even before that survival game fad that is now looooooong gone.
All in all, if you're looking to play a highly polished and realistic zombie survival game this is for you. If you wan't to play it in multiplayer, wait for the release of build 41 that we've all been waiting for the past 2 years. And if you're reading this after October 2021 and there is still no trace of NPCs.. don't even bother.

This game is extremely fun but can be very hard to master and figure out. If you're not a patient person this game is not for you, this isn't your average hack and slash zombie game, this is a survival game.

The premise of the game is to survive, until you don't. You spawn in one of four different places in the large map of Knox County, and though the map stays the same, RNG of hordes, loot, and story houses spices things up, just like how I spice up my dead rat before putting it in the oven- before burning the whole neighborhood down. The game's realistic, I'll give it that.
I've found this game to be more tense than the average isometric survival game. Each looting run survived or helicopter averted feels like a huge small step. The game clearly doesn't want you to survive, but it's possible to get settled in your own secluded cabin or cordoned off city block. But, who would want that? You can just up the anty next run. The customization of the scenario you will play, and even being able to adjust nearly every individual sound, allows for a very versatile game no matter who's playing. Personally, I turn down the heartbeat sound, my character is terrified all the time and I don't blame them.
The game mechanics are in-depth, but not too in-depth. You can wear clothes which give more protection, at the cost of weight and simply being way too hot in a sweater, leather jacket, and a scarf in the middle of July. There's car mechanics, too.
Of course, Project Zomboid isn't perfect. For one, I'm not too fond of the nutrition system. Hearty eater trait both makes your character feel hungry, along with making him starve when he doesn't eat at this increased rate. When you starve, you lose health faster than you lose weight, by a lot. I know the devs are trying to avoid having people become anorexics when they become fat, but it seems a bit too extreme. I haven't managed to keep my weight down with this trait.
Then there's the elephant in the room of the fact the development progress is slow. I'm too busy dying to notice.

However, it would be unfair to not mention the fact that development is very slow. While I'd easily consider it more than worth the current asking price and I definitely think you could easily get a full game's worth of playtime out of it, if you're going into this expecting it to be out of EA any time soon you might want to wait for another update or two. That isn't to say that the devs aren't working hard and providing regular updates on where development is, for the record. They consistently post weekly updates and are very friendly on their Discord. I just mean that the game isn't going to have all the features it will eventually.
The best thing I can compare it to is the original release of Terraria. A fantastic game, but nowhere near the absolute behemoth it is today. That's what you're getting with your $15. An extremely, deep, solid, and content-rich game that's easily one of the best zombie survival games on the market, with the promise of even more content and updates to come. I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone who likes hardcore zombie games! The Build 40 multiplayer community is fantastic, and even the beta Build 41 has a very, very active modding community.
Overall, I think anyone who loves zombie games as much as I do owes it to themselves to take a chance and check this game out. Just be sure to switch to the IWBUMS beta Build 41 in the properties menu on Steam, provided you don't want to play multiplayer!

Good :
- die and retry
- lot of replayability
- fun with friend
- good community
- a lot of zombie
Bad :
- in development for at least 9 years
- slow update (1/year)
- HUD out of date since 2010
Buy it when low price with a couple of friends, launch it one time a year to see the evolution.

The gameplay is nitty, gritty, and just what you'd want from a realistic apocalypse scenario. You can customize it in Sandbox as well to be as easy or as hard as you want! You can go from The Walking Dead lore all the way to DayZ, and it even will play better than DayZ. Zombies are an actual threat, and the mechanics are beyond in-depth.
I've bought this game 4 times for me and my friends, I absolutely love it.
Many people complain about not having NPCs, slow development time, and sometimes even exaggerated events that happened to to the development team over 8 years ago. None of these are valid reasons to not recommend the game, the only reason to dislike the game is if you aren't looking for a survival game where more than just the zombies want you dead.

Coming back to it in 2020, and it's a totally different experience. The game has grown significantly over the years, including a significant graphics upgrade, vehicles, many new items, crafting ect. I'm happy to say it's become the game it's been promising to become, with still more to come! It's a very comfy game to play during the quarantine, I'd definitely recommend it!

You can tell this game is a labor of love for the few people working on it, but I feel like they overshot their target. The game should have been done several years ago, but they just keep adding new and incomplete systems to the game without finishing the stuff that is dragging the game down.
I can only hope that the developers read this and take the criticism to heart, and not just pass it off as an angry person who didn't feel like they got their money's worth. I hope their next project is better organized, has better funding and a development schedule that is actually adhered to.
This game could have been something truly legendary, but instead got caught in the pit of mediocrity trying to add too many things.

I would describe to any newcomers or people looking to buy the game for the first time, this game is brutal and unlike any other zombie survival game. It's in essence a Zombie Apocalypse Simulator, Very immersive, Very challenging, Very Steep learning curve and you will die A LOT!
Highly recommended and if you really want to immerse yourself even more into the game listen to Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead OSTs while playing. ;]
