5 stars, you can nuke yourself and edit the files to give yourself infinite nukes.
Your railgun has more range than the BVR missiles.
9/10 deaths come from slamming into a cargo plane.

Edit: you can fight the final boss two times at once and using glitches you can fight 4 of him at once. I pray this is never patched.

Has the added bonus of PCVR and HOTAS support, with AC7's VR being exclusive to Playstation. Project Wingman is also still receiving patches and content updates, while AC7 is finished by this point. In terms of graphics, the plane models and cockpit textures are slightly better in AC7, but the particle and lighting effects are a metric tonne better in PW, so PW ends up being more of a spectacle to play.
If you enjoy Ace Combat games, get this. It may not have multiplayer but the lack of a mission timer rushing you and the added conquest mode means it lasts longer and is infinitely more replayable than AC7 in singleplayer. In general the campaign took me around the same time to complete as AC7, but that's because I found myself having to restart missions or checkpoints in AC7 where that wasn't often the case in PW. The story itself is much more interesting than AC7 and the writing much better in my opinion.
As far as VR goes, it is one of the more demanding VR titles but this is one of the better VR games you can get. The entirety of the game is playable in VR too, so you don't get a watered-down experience like in the PSVR version of AC7. You need to be willing to make compromises on resolution or graphics details though, as it's not particularly well optimized = even on a 3080 I can get 70fps max with some frequent frame drops and stuttering unless I drop the resolution and things like clouds and particle effects down a fair whack.
EDIT: Fhoglers OpenVR_FSR mod can also be used get a boost to VR performance if you don't mind doing a quick .dll swap in the games install directory.

I gotta say though that this Ace Combat Zero remake is looking amazing. They even brought back the crazy funny nuke man.
Project Wingman is basically a giant schizo fueled love letter to Ace Combat. They play and look incredibly similar in many ways. Only way they differ is that Wingman has actual effective guns. It’s basically the Holy Trilogy put into one and maximized in every aspect. The enemies even nuke themselves. It’s fantastic.
The game is so good there’s even competitive genocide. The fact that this game gives you access to hundreds of missiles and bombs allowing you to commit mass murder by shooting from the sky above is kind of crazy. At what point is it no longer a game and just simulated horror?
Crimson 1 and the Federation did NOTHING WRONG!

It takes a lot for a game with a campaign to get me to actually finish it because I usually end up distracted by another game before I do so. But with PW I haven't just cleared it once, but multiple times already. Sometimes I just play a few missions for no other reason than that the game is just that much fun and I have nothing else quite like it.
The soundtrack by Jose Pavli is also just amazing, it almost carries some of the game by always framing everything in the right way. It's hard to really explain to be honest. It's something you have to experience for yourself.
When it comes to controls I personally recommend using a HOTAS. It's not a flight sim by any stretch of the imagination so a keyboard and mouse or controlling work just fine and are great fun aswell. But it's exactly because it's not a full on flight sim that using a hotas in the cockpit view is amazing. You really feel like you're somekind of action movie pilot with moments that feel like they come straight of a macross anime happening naturally where you're desperately trying to outmaneuver tens of missiles all coming for you at once and then making a violent 180 turn and releasing your own swarm of missiles in response.
So in short, this game is just stupid fun and I highly recommend it. If you can, use a HOTAS, but other control inputs are fine. And put that game music on full blast.

if ace combat is metal gear for planes then PW is metal gear rising for planes.
the game is honestly worth purchasing , it's made technically by one man and i cannot say deny how impressive the game.
visually the game is so freaking beautiful but you will face low frame rates sometimes due to the numbers of enemies and allies on the battle.
and the soundtrack is so damn goooood.( damn jose you have done great job with the ost)
the final battle took from me half hour to defeat and small advice play the game in well lit room or otherwise you might end up damaging your retina.
so if you love any of the fallowing :
-ace combat
-2d games that is all about dodge bullets
-planes
-good VR game
-chaotic games
then you cannot go wrong with PW.
Plus i heard the game is good in VR but i never tried it.

The short version: Project Wingman is far from as good of a game as it could be, but also much, much better than it had any right to be. Developed on shoestring budget with the very simple premise of, “Ace Combat, but with the serial numbers filed off,” the only thing Project Wingman ever had to deliver was satisfying arcade-style flight combat option and a few different aircraft to fly with. Instead, Project Wingman delivers all of that with an impressively in-depth campaign mode and a challenging roguelike conquer-the-world mode, on top of an impressive array of playable aircraft, usable weapons, and artistic flair.
Considering the (tragic) fact that arcade-style flight combat simulators are a well-and-truly dead genre, shambling onward only through the very intermittent output of Ace Combat, Project Wingman, though flawed, is a very welcome addition to the genre and a delightful experience for flight combat fans. Combat is straightforward and fast-paced, frequently pitting the player against enormous waves of foes in the air and on the ground. The larger battlefields can be profoundly chaotic, with dozens of fighters slinging missiles at each other, setting the sky aflame and painting the ground below black with ash and smoke. It is in these moments of frenetic chaos where Project Wingman is at its best, delivering hugely ambitious over-the-top battles that can strain even the hardiest of GPUs. As a long-time (and long-suffering) Ace Combat fan, this is precisely the kind of nonsense I adore.
That said, there are flaws worth noting.
First and most distractingly is the writing. The narrative tying together the campaign missions has some interesting ideas, but they're poorly presented. The syntax is often clumsy, and very frequently words will be used incorrectly—almost as though the script were written by someone for whom English is not a native language, and fail to capture the full meaning they intend in the translation. The end result is a story that feels unfortunately amateurish, and one that fails to meaningfully contextualize the action in the missions. For the most part, Project Wingman emulates both the style and themes of the typical Ace Combat narrative. So, ultimately, it's a game that delivers precisely what it promises: an off-brand Ace Combat experience.
The only other issue I have with the game (other than some annoying optimization hiccups) are very forgivable: the ground terrain lacks detail and relies overmuch on recycled assets, and the full game is smeared in a grainy filter that just kind of makes everything look blurry, whether you're playing at 720p or 2160p. The ground terrain can look especially bad in certain lighting conditions, where it appears as little more than a swath of featureless black. Water textures particularly bad, often seeming more like sheets of partially-reflective metal than fluid. At one point in the game I found myself wondering what PT Boats were doing on land before finally realizing that the “land” was just the normal water textures with some weird lighting.
Of course, all of these issues are very easy to forgive in consideration of the game's threadbare budget and small development team—that it can get so close to evoking the same feeling of a AAA Ace Combat game with only a small fraction of the budget and manpower is nothing short of a miracle.
Finally, it's worth directing special praise to Project Wingman for including a feature that fans have long-desired to see in the Ace Combat series: every time you fly a mission in a two-seater aircraft, your fellow pilot is present in battle with their own unique voiced dialog. Take a single-seater instead, and they'll sit the battle out. It's a small detail, but it adds so much. I can't say that Project Wingman is as good as the games it so ardently emulates, but it does come admirably close. This game was clearly a passion product, and the love that went into its development is clear at every level. That such a thing as Project Wingman can exist in this world is a pure delight.

This game is fun.
This game is hard, it's as hard as an early Japanese arcade game.
It's rewarding when you pull off a boss battle with 7HP left and no ammo except for a couple hundred rounds in your cannon.
This game beat my ass when I thought I was actually good, which is a testament to it's excellent gameplay in general. I have no complaints except that the loadouts should be more varied, however you can realistically fly any plane in the game in any mission with any loadout and as long as you commit to that playstyle, you can find ways to make it work.
Detractors talk about missing planes: there's a mod for it and there's the possibility of updates in the future.
Detractors also talk about the runtime. If you play this from start to finish you may take anywhere between 5-7 hours in one sitting. Personally, it took me 8 on normal and I had to take some breaks because my hands were cramping from using a controller and frantically shitting my pants dodging missiles. The replayability is extremely high, once you complete the campaign you unlike two special prototype planes and several game modifiers that completely shake up every mission you just completed. There's even some extra stuff thrown in on Mercenary difficulty, the highest difficulty, to reward you for going balls to the wall with the game. I fully expect to have anywhere between 20-30 hours once I'm ready to try Conquest which I don't know very much about, so I can't speak on it.
I love this game. As an homage to Ace Combat games, Project Wingman is a truly excellent example of what a modern video game can be, and how independent developers are able to put out pieces of media that are leaps and bounds ahead of what AAA developers churn out in a formulaic fashion. $25 is a fair price for this game.

Do you like Ace Combat? If so, buy this game! It perfectly captures the best parts of Ace Combat (cool planes, over the top story, awesome music, etc.), and puts its own unique spin on it. It’s a game made by AC fans for AC fans. If you love Ace Combat, then it’s a must play.
Have you never played Ace Combat or any flight sim before? Let Project Wingman be your first! Some of the other reviews call the game unforgiving because of its lack of checkpoints, but do not let that deter you. The difficultly is fairly customizable, so you can tune the game towards your own comfort level. The AI is adaptable towards your preferred level of challenge, and the difficulty can easily be adjusted in between missions without consequence. So, have no fear! Flight sims are a unique gaming experience unlike any other, and Project Wingman is a great introduction to the genre.
Do you actively dislike the Ace Combat games and flight sims in general, and you only wound up here because the steam algorithm forced the game upon you? Well, hey, have an open mind! Project Wingman takes the best bits of the genre and twists it about in a fun way. Even if the Ace Combat games weren’t your cup of tea, or you’re one of the 13 people who actually enjoyed H.A.W.X., Project Wingman may be up your alley.
Between 21 campaign missions and a rouge-like conquest mode that is infinity repayable, Project Wingman offers a fun time for both veteran and rookie aces alike.

Whilst Project Wingman may lack personal stories shared between members of your squadron, or character development; it easily makes up for it with some of the fastest, most intense and well-balanced flight combat game-play in the genre. Wingman's strengths lie in its flight and combat mechanics, and its stunning graphics and visuals. Unlike most similar games, Wingman makes gun combat much more feasible which will allow you to experience every weapon system the game has to offer without sacrificing game-play. I'd argue that gun-based game-play was the most satisfying part of Wingman's fast-paced combat.
The attention to detailing within the cockpit of aircraft themselves is incredible and despite being a 3rd-person inclined player, I found myself being able to play comfortably with all the immersion that the cockpit view had to offer. Vistas within this game were equally well-crafted and the game delivers beautiful shock-value through the changing of these landscapes throughout the game and during missions. There was some inconsistency within the voice acting and the audio quality of recorded lines, however this can be easily overlooked.
The game overall was perfectly challenging on hard mode for an Ace Combat veteran and I look forward to exploring Mercenary difficulty. Peacekeeper (Ace) squadrons were genuinely terrifying to face in combat, as was the final boss of this game. I'd highly recommend this game to anyone looking for an arcade flight-combat experience focused primarily on game-play.

I appreciate that I can use the mouse to navigate menus and still use the controller to fly. Some games seem to get confused with multiple input devices.
That said, for the love of God, can we please get some checkpoints?!? An hour+ long mission with multiple stages, and I have to replay the whole thing if I die in the last stage? Come on... Almost enough to turn the yes into a no from me. Flying is ridiculously fun, though, so I feel it's still worth the price of entry.

- Soundtrack is top-notch too
- Has a VR mode
- You can carry up to 4 special weapons at once and like 100 missiles on the starter planes
- Your allies aren't useless
- Some battles are truly massive and intense, with futuristic gunships with advanced weaponry
- It also has quite the emotional final mission/s
- Has a separate rogue-like-esque conquest mode to truly test your endurance and Ace Combat skills
This is VEERY well worth every penny of the 25$ this costs

But really, the game is an absolute blast, it looks amazing, the soundtrack is simply phenomenal, and the story is hammy but decently compelling. The audio mixing could use some tweaking, as sometimes the dialogue is drowned out by the other audio, and some levels could use some changes to the color palette (something the devs have already acknowledged and are working on), but overall it's a top-notch game from a very small team that oozes passion, easy recommendation for anyone already considering.

There's some good plane variety, great chatter between characters and the campaign is a really fun romp.
Oh, and then there's conquest mode.... which I can see myself playing for a VERY long time.

The gameplay is more or less the same as Ace Combat, you get a jet, you get missiles, you go and blow shit up. But overall, it feels a little deeper than AC7, planes generally feel more unique, and you are able to customize your loadouts a little more, giving you way more variety on how you wanna approach each mission. The general feel of flying feels better than it does in AC, planes actually feel like they have some weight, going through clouds is probably one of the best part of flying in PW, the shaking and other visual effects that happen when doing so all feel great! You are also able to customize many settings such as camera sensitivity, FOV, etc... Which is not possible in AC7, and was a dealbreaker for me back then. Not having your face smashed into the cockpit's glass is huge, being able to look around and track your targets is huge. Oh and guns are actually viable in PW!
PW also features full VR support and Conquest mode which gives it a ton of replayability, Conquest mode plays sort of like a rogue like.
In terms of visuals, I would say Ace Combat has the edge, Ace Combat has overall better models, better textures and better assets all around, Project Wingman does just fine in all those areas, only the assests on the ground felt a bit dated, but you shouldn't be seeing the ground too much anyways, and it is understandable considering that, again, this is made by mostly one person. The lighting was definitely overdone is some of Project Wingman levels, lighting sometimes felt oversaturated and completely off, that is mostly the case in some of the early missions, and I think some patches may have toned down the saturation a little bit.
The story was ok, the story revolves too much around the actual conflict, and I feel like characters didn't get as much attention as they should have, and the ending left me feeling a bit confused, it felt like everything was cut short.
Soundtrack is really good, while not always outstanding, it has a fair amount of really good songs. Their composer did a great job overall! Sound design is also pretty good, nothing too outstanding but it works.
Last but not least, I was a bit disappointed with the selection of planes, no proper F-22 Raptor, no F-35, no Rafale or Mirage or European designs in general. DLCs could easily fix this but I unfortunately didn't find any of the planes that I love except for the MiG-21, F-16 and MiG-29.
So yeah, extremely enjoyable arcade air combat game that focuses on solid and consistent gameplay, it has some flaws but for 25 bucks, the game is worth it and I would actually recommend it over Ace Combat 7. I do not regret backing this title.

The gameplay and planes feel very good and responsive with a controller and fit neatly for an arcade flight game. If you are coming from Ace Combat, you will slot right into the gameplay aside from a few differences. Like for example, the ability to carry four special weapons which is an amazing feeling when you are flying an attacker aircraft and are popping off anti-tank missiles, unguided bombs and machine gun rain to destroy an entire ground division within a minute. Speaking of aircraft, this game features a nice selection of planes with more unseen ones like the Not Viggen, Not Harrier and Not Frogfoot! The fact that the Not Avro Arrow exists in the roster and the game featuring a price tag of $28.99 CAD makes Project Wingman one of the most Beaverland friendly games out there. So far, missions are more compact and filled for replayability like older Ace Combat games and even have a no checkpoint style as well. If you did not enjoy the score attacks and weather mechanics of AC7, you may enjoy Project Wingman more (I did personally enjoy the lightning missions and shooting oil rig supports in AC7).
The story is sufficient for a flight game as instant props are received for not creating an America vs Russia story for the 69th time. Unlike Ace Combat, the setting is in the real world set after a world shifting calamity which still makes it a strange, but real world. Being a mercenary or sky pirate is probably also the best way to have your character considering the amount of carnage you are creating for money. I have not played enough to get a complete feel of the story or atmosphere, but I do like the Not Yellow Squadron introduced early on in the game and different world dialogue like for example “By the Dust Mother!” to replace the proverbial OMG. I only hope it just does not get overused or else I will have to tell it to dance with the angels.
Visuals and soundtrack are pretty and bopping. The battlefields and gloomy skies are visually pleasing and the planes are relatively detailed (some planes are lacking movement animations though). The weather, clouds and some other effects do not really look great at certain times especially compared to AC7, but I understand the dev team is small and this game doesn’t have a triple A budget. The smoke trails from missiles and planes are a spectacle and remind me of AC6 (along with the lenient machine gun and helpful allies). In addition, the soundtrack is quite the spectacle itself to go along your war crime adventures and I wonder if the skies at the end will start singing Latin.
Overall, this is a nice purchase for its price of $24.99 USD instead of a spooky $60 USD price tag. It is a solid arcade flight game that can be amazing after polishing out the bugs, upgrading the effects and maybe an improved tutorial for people new to the genre. The bugs are mostly minor, but I did have odd issues with somehow successfully landing off the runaway due to habits of speedlanding from Ace Combat and I noclipped into the ground on my second landing in the game. I look forward towards seeing the future of Project Wingman and if they are able to add more aircraft to the roster and introduce PvE multiplayer similar to Ace Combat Infinity; they got a real bunker buster on their hands.

When you are in the mission screen, after briefing, the mouse icon doesn't show up.
So you have to select the menu blindly.
It doesn't recognize the gamepad or joystick by itself.
So you have to bind all keys by yourself, which is almost impossible to achieve,
because the you can't see the mouse movement...
What the hell?
I hope there will be a patch very very veeeeery soon.
I have been waiting since the first information about this title and right now I feel very disappointed.

I launch it and I can´t make my hotas work. The same hotas that worked flawlessly in the beta you guys released 100 years ago.
3 reboots and I give up.
I download x360CE in an attempt to emulate the joystick to see what´s the problem. Still doesn´t work.
The funny story is that it happened the same way with Ace Combat 7, and I refunded it (as I have with this game atm) and rebought it later when I found out that they improved hotas support.
Will do the same for this game since I loved the beta ! As of right now, though... I refuse to play with a ps, xbox controller or the keyboard, total Heresy.
I know the game comes from a 2 man crew, so Best of luck to you guys ! Improve the joystick support !
