Penumbra is Frictional Games' first release, but I found out about it only two weeks ago. Don't get it how I could have missed out on this one for such a long time. Hell, it's 13 years old.
There are a lot of gameplay elements (like dragging your mouse for stuff like opening drawers etc.) that was later re-used in Amnesia, and generally it's quite similar to that, but Penumbra is by far not as scary as the former.
Nevertheless, playing Penumbra will definitely give you the chills, and there are several abominable horrors in that old lead mine in Greenland that you're about to explore.
So yeah, Penumbra is worth it, please play it and don't freak out.

In den alten Minen…

Da war schon lange Schicht im Schacht…

Gameplay

It has a great atmosphere and it`s still great fun to play. It doesn`t hold your hand though so some of the puzzles can be a little obscure and there`s some running back and forth when I realised I didn`t really search properly the first time, that`s on me !
It`s a shame this type of physics based game largely went away, especially from Fritional games who seem to transition to story based walking simulators rather than these more puzzle oriented games as figuring out all the neat stuff you can do with the items you have and in the ways they can be used is a really fantastic concept and gives some awesome `aha` moments in realising a solution.
The few chase sequences work fine but require simple memorisation rather than any real puzzling and don`t really add much to the game but have a decent tension to them.
A little rough but great stuff nonetheless.

Penumbra: Overture is a first-person horror game with puzzle elements where you play as a man named Phillip who investigates a mysterious underground bunker in an icy wasteland while investigating a letter from his father. It's almost like one of those walking sim horror games, but it has one unique feature: You can fight the enemies. There are only mutated animals as enemies here, no ghosts or scary monsters, and you can kill the mutant dog and spider.

Puzzle-wise, you rely on your environment and objects with physics, you can grab and place them like in their later games, Amnesia. Like in some puzzles, you have to push and stack items to continue. Some notes also provide the clues to the puzzles you must solve. The map isn't really linear, like there's a hub area, but to progress you will have to go to the side areas to collect items, and if you miss them you'll have to backtrack.

Penumbra: Overture is really short, it can be finished in 3-4 hours, maybe less. And the ending is a cliffhanger, but it's because the 3 games is more like an episodic games rather than sequels, taking place directly after one another. If you like horror games and Frictional's work, give the Penumbra games a try.

Frictional Games of Amnesia and SOMA fame first horror adventure and you can tell based on clunky controls, unwieldy combat, stilted animations and awful path-finding. Saved however by an awesome atmosphere enhanced with terrific sound design and exceptionally well written and voiced narratives. Enable save on demand (F4) in the .ini file.

These. Games. Need. Updated. And. Fixed

Lovely game with good atmosphere and story.. but I had a few bugs, one was game breaking that I luckily, fixed by sheer luck since NO ONE had same issue online searching. (Most issues with these games have no solutions online btw..)

1. FIX SURROUND SOUND IN YOUR GAMES. Stop making it rely on OpenAL. It's shit. It doesn't work, and to TRY to get it to work is a chore. Your basic version that installs with game DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY AND DOESN'T EVEN PLACE THE .DLL files in the RIGHT SPOT.

1a. Even when following 'guides' to a T and manually placing .DLL files where they need to go and manually fixing cfg file, still won't work. This and Black Plague share same issue and I'm expecting Requiem to as well.

2. Add modern resolution support. 1920x1080 is highest, I play on a 4k TV. When booted, the screen constantly warped and artifact'd. Had to edit cfg file to go to 4k and stop the wiggle.

3. FIX THE SCALING IN GAME!!! If playing at any resolution and you have your 'Display settings' via windows 'scale and layout > change size of text, apps and other items' to anything above 100%... the game is zoomed in badly depending on how far from 100% this windows setting is.

4. ALLOW MANUAL QUICK SAVES BY DEFAULT. Currently, you need to manually enable them via cfg file.

4a. Manual saves break and cause a crash is used during a 'chase' scene. I got mad it kept crashing at end of chase from big creature, kept reloading.. crashing.. no one online had the issue here.

Accidentally load old save RIGHT BEFORE chase starts and doing it all in 1 swoop prevented the crash.

If manual saves were disabled due to bugs like this.. fix them. Don't just disable the option and hide it in a cfg file.

Love the game itself. But seriously needs updated.

Heres to hoping you do before I re-play these again in a few years probably, since yes, I enjoyed (so far) this one that much.

Do not expect a working product if you buy this though. Playable? Yes, but rough. Devs, please show this some polish for modern machines. It deserves it.

One of the best horror games I've ever played. It starts off a little slow and it can get a little boring sneaking around the same enemies. But it does pick up later on and gets really tense. It has a way of getting under your skin in a way no other game ever did to me. The story has a very Lovecraftian, the whole man messing with forces beyond his understanding and paying a heavy price for it.

The story is told through notes scattered around the game, which feels really organic and really adds to this incredible creepy atmosphere. That said the story ends in a cliff hanger and is continued in black plague, so I recommend buying the collection. They are pretty cheap too.

The gameplay generally consists of some rudimentary stealth which isn't too hard. Most of the game, you are only sneaking around one or two enemies at most. The puzzles on the other hand are fairly challenging and require a little thinking out of the box and just paying close attention to your surroundings.

Recommended difficulty: Hard.

Amnesia might be more popular and recognisable than this but for my money Frictional Games did a better horror here beforehand. Genuinely creepy, it might not have the high points Amnesia does but I think it's a better game as a whole.

The Penumbra series are a predecesor of Amnesia. Made by the same developer however, in my opinion, everything that Amnesia did, Penumbra did better.

This is Lovecraftian game to the bone and my favourite horror series of all time. The atmosphere is gripping from the beginning and the soundrack is melancolic, misterious and amazingly composed. It deals with feelings of isolation, being trapped in underground mine and misterious caves and facilities in which you will have to solve puzzles in order to progress while being hunted by horrifying creatures that you would hide from. As darkness is your greatest ally. You can inspect and interact with almost any object in the game with a similar 3D control scheme used in Amnesia.

Overture is the first episode of the series followed by Black Plague and its DLC Requiem. However, if you own Amnesia, a group of modders called Counter Current games made a few unnofficial sequels (also for free) called Necrologue, Twillight of the Archaic and a demo for an upcoming prequel called Prisoner of Fate (available on steam).

Side note: there is also a VR mod for Penumbra Overture somewehere out there for anyone interested in that.

If you like horror and you haven't tried this game yet... is cheap and on sale often so whatever you do. Don't let this experience pass you by.

Cool horror game, honestly enjoyed it more than amnesia, as I found the story more interesting and the inclusion of combat made things more compelling to me. Just be aware that this is only the first chapter of a larger game, the second chapter being Penumbra: Black Plague. This game ends very abruptly so I would recommend getting the two games together so you can continue as soon as this one ends.

Penumbra episode one is a very rough gem, it has a hard time figuring out what type of horror game it Wants to be, and is very experimental and that is not a bad thing.

the game was a very important step to something bigger to push the limits and create new genres instead of copying a successful formula.

As all Penumbra games, this one nice to play. It have it's downs, bugs, but story in general never gets old. In this game you are exploring dungeons with various creatures to avoid. Graphics are very old, bigger resolution is not supported. Controls are ok. Long story short - it worth the money, take it and enjoy this oldie.

As the first game of the Penumbra series, Penumbra: Overture does a fantastic job in introducing the series. Yes, the game is extremely dated, with a clunky combat system and movement-based object interactions, but surprisingly, these things end up adding to the game's charm and horror tone.

The biggest draw here is the tense and isolated atmosphere of the game. Even though the enemies aren't as horrifying as those in Penumbra: Black Plague or Amnesia, the circumstances of their encounter and the environments themselves makes the enemies much more terrifying.

Unfortunately, repeat playthroughs and knowledge of what to do does dilute the experience somewhat, especially when one knows when and where the enemies show up, as being able to kill certain enemies in rather cheap ways. The tension isn't completely gone even with these things, but it is massively reduced.

For a first-time horror experience, however, Penumbra: Overture is worth one's time, even if games like Amnesia and Soma have surpassed it. The tense atmosphere, creepy environments, and unnerving story make this an easy buy for anyone that wants a good time with a horror game.

I remember my friend playing Penumbra games when i was like 6 y/o, but i never had the balls to play horror games at that age. i'm 21 years old now, and being a Frictional Games fan because Amnezia and SOMA, i said, why not. Overture is a solid horror title overall, setting a good foundation for Frictional's horror formula popularised in Amnesia. The story is intriguing and i'm excited to jump into Black Plague. However, Overture is clunky, and there were a ton of times throughout the short 3-4 hour campaign where i found myself getting stuck on sometimes obtuse puzzles. Not to mention, the setting of the underground mines is great, but the level design is repetitive and in the second half you're sent through multiple mazes with a couple separate rooms in each, multiple times over.

I'd easily recommend it on a sale, but its nothing amazing.

Penumbra was the prototype for Amnesia- one of the scariest horror games ever made. Penumbra is not as scary and will definitely feel like a breeze at parts (although there is a very well done creepy atmosphere). It can be terrifying on your first run though.

What Penumbra shines for is the unique puzzles and compelling story. My favorite part was mixing chemicals in the periodic table and making potions and bombs for the puzzle. Theres a puzzle that requires you to repair a generator and use ingenious thinking. Theres also a morsecode puzzle making it really feel like an underground bunker set in WW2.

Although not as scary as Amnesia the atmosphere is still unsettling. There is no sanity mechanic which make which makes hiding better. However I found running from the enemies isn't that difficult. The game has combat but it is very clunky and should not have been in the game. I have one major complaint and it involves a puzzle. The puzzle requires you to use Morse Code which is almost impossible to solve it you don't know it. This puzzle shouldn't have been included.

I've never been so pissed off at a game nor have I loathed myself for playing one until now. The game is clunky, visually unappealing, cheap and frustrating. But you know what? I'd play it a thousand times through. There's something incredibly charming and attention grabbing about it. Even through the anger, I just had to keep playing. It is challenging, captivating and something I would recommend to any horror fan out there. This game is worth the trouble.

2020 Speedy Review Cleanup

Penumbra: Overture is definitely a horror game worth trying out. While it's a dated game, especially for its release date, it's still interesting and scary.

The weakest part of the game is how you fight enemies. Granted, you're meant to run away from them, but the mechanics are a little fidgety and trying to stealth around is too much of a bother than it is in other games, in my opinion. So you can do cheap things like dragging a crate, triggering an enemy, then standing on top of the crate so you can hit the enemy while you're safe. I did this to avoid having to worry about them.

The sequel did away with the weapons and I think made some other improvements, but be sure to check this out!

Not quite as good as the series' successor, Amnesia, Penumbra: Overture is still a worthy horror title. Nowadays this kind of gameplay nor graphics won't impress anyone, but this is first Frictional Games product, which is first step to SOMA. You can clearly see some good ideas, that will be modified in future, in amnesia and SOMA. You really need to be in the right mood to play and feel it's unique atmosphere. Nevertheless, I still recommend it, at least give game a chance to prove it's worth.

It's pretty good. During my playthrough I kept thinking Overture could do with some more enemy variety or some more fearsome foes, but actually like Soma many years after it, the game does a good job of making large levels feel creepy and threatening with just a few enemies lurking about. This means that Overture is tense rather than outright scary; I'm intrigued to see how the next game in the series builds on from this. The atmosphere in the game is top-notch and I like how Overture prioritises stealth and keeping away from enemies over face-on combat, which feels weighty and ungainly - you need to get both your timing and aiming right otherwise you'll be dead quite quickly. There's some good puzzle design too, except for the steam grid one of course! This was a good introduction to the Penumbra series and an enjoyable 8-9 hours.

A pretty decent horror game with an ok story. I like the menu music and the overall setting of the mining facility. The puzzles were great for the most part; they're not too easy or too convoluted and requires some thought and thorough searching to get through.

The monsters are kind of.. well, uninspired in a sense - Save for one, but I don't want to spoil for those who haven't played this yet. The visuals and physics engine of Penumbra have aged pretty well and the game looked great for it's time and it still does.

Two or three of the issues that I had with this game - is that you're able to kill most enemies, or sometimes you could just run straight past them outright, which takes the scare factor away a bit, and the second and biggest issue for me, was some of the chase sequences, you have little-to-no time to react on what to do before it's too late and it took me several tries to get through and it sucked. I detest trial and error for survival horror, it kind of ruins the experience for me. Lastly is a certain puzzle involving steam exhaust platforms, although not as bad as the chase sequences, you can't expect someone to get past that on their first try, that puzzle was probably the scariest thing in the game.

But I can't exactly fault this entry for these small gripes, since it's the first of a trilogy and I had fun with uncovering the story, in which the game doesn't rely on text and dialogue too much for the player to understand the overall dark tone of said game. I wouldn't say it's replayable after finishing, but I had fun on the first playthrough.

If it wasn't for Penumbra Overture, other games by
Frictional
like Amnesia: The Dark Descent probably wouldn't have been made. Sure,
Frictional's
first attempts at the horror genre might've been flawed, the combat in this game is pretty clunky, and it hasn't aged too well, but with some tweaking, some of these issues can be fixed. However, despite these issues, Penumbra Overture is still a pretty solid game. With some good puzzles, horrifying enemies, and an intriguing story, there's a lot to like here. Overall, I'd recommend Penumbra Overture, but don't expect it to be perfect.

Amnesia before Amnesia came out. Well, at least for the gameplay side of things. It didn't felt that creepy though and you can fight the enemies which I always did because it's easy and then you don't need to worry about them, even though the controls for (melee) combat kinda sucks. Also the only enemies are spoiler
dogs and spiders
. None of them are creepy. Such a shame.
But the gameplay is really fun. The only thing I can complain there is that the level design basically constantly repeats itself:
you are in a maze-like-area with a few
dogs
patrolling and with a few doors leading to different rooms where you have stuff to collect and tasks to do.
It has a decent length, story isn't great though.

Played this after finally playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent (on another platform - enjoyed it a lot)

I liked Penumbra- I feel it could have been a better game than A:TDD if more had been done with the setting, but this was an earlier game for Frictional.

Definitely worth playing through though. SOMA is still their best work by far imo.

Arguably, even better than Amnesia. One of those low budget gems that have a charm which will always stay with you.
Highly engaging puzzles, great pacing and design ideas form its base.
Also, I wish more games had this game's brand of heavy, cumbersome combat that feels so impactful.

If you, like me play some of Frictional games later releases and go back to their early output to get more of the same, well, this is very much the same as Amnesia the Dark Descent, but very crude. The light mechanics are a fair bit more annoying and the combat... well it just kinda sucks. The game is not terrible, but not even close to their later games in quality.

It pains me to write this, but Frictional's first foray into the survival horror genre has not aged very well.
Don't get me wrong, I do understand penumbra's important role in laying the groundwork for Frictional's horror masterpieces like Amnesia and SOMA. however, Frictional's pioneer title simply has too many flaws to really be seen as a survival horror classic.

I wanted to like Penumbra Overture, I really did. It has some good things going for it. The story is intriguing, the small cast of characters were well done, the puzzles are unique, and at times it had a really good atmosphere. The giant worm chase sequences were heart-pounding terrifying, I really, really loved the worms.

Sadly, I hate to say this, but the flaws of Overture really outweigh the positives. First off, the gameplay is absolutely infuriating, interaction with items is not very responsive. Frictional tried to create a unique system where you grab onto items and tools and move them with the mouse to use them or flick with the mouse to throw them. It is unique but it is also very clunky and will take a while to get the hang of (if you ever get the hang of it). The item management system is also very clunky, and clicking on items in the inventory is also not very responsive. If you take one look at the combat, you'll understand why Frictional made you unarmed in every horror game they've made since penumbra. It is the single worst combat system I have ever seen in my life. Like the item interaction system it requires movement of the mouse. For example, if you want to smash a spider with the pickaxe, you have to hold the left click and move the mouse across the pad for a swinging action. This will often cause you to make mistakes and turn around and look in crazy directions, often away from the enemies. This system is also used for throwing dynamite, which often makes you look to the ground and throw dynamite at your feet, which has led to me blowing myself up on multiple occasions. Such an awful combat system would be fine if the game encouraged you to avoid combat unless absolutely necessary, however Penumbra puts you in some situations where it is unavoidable, such as when you are going through tunnels and spiders appear In front of you. Stealth is also clunky and inconsistent, leading to situations where enemies becoming alerted to you when they really shouldn't be, leading to no other option but fighting your way out.

Speaking of enemies, I absolutely hated penumbra's enemies, probably more than any other enemies in any other game I've ever played. Penumbra's rogue's gallery is mostly filled with the most cliche monsters in all of horror: spiders and zombie dogs. Poorly rendered and poorly mocapped spiders and dogs with absolutely horrendous AI. These enemies were horrifically annoying and not scary in the slightest. The spiders were horribly annoying and hard to hit with penumbra's combat system, which is really the only way to be rid of the annoying buggers. I especially despised the dogs, and I audibly groaned whenever I heard their boring growls in a new area, they are super fast and become alert even when you aren't in their line of sight, and when one of them knows where you are, they all do, meaning that you are basically screwed if one of them spots you, even if you try to fight it off with the crappy combat system. You can try to lure them away from you by throwing beef jerky, but that only leads to one or two of the dogs to actually eat the jerky while the others still patrol the area, not really providing much of a break. If anything it seemed to me that the jerky only made things worse, as it seemed like it only distracted one of the dogs while bringing the other, patrolling ones closer to you. Really, I cannot overstate how much I hated these stupid dogs I have genuinely never despised a video game enemy nearly as much as I hated these things. The only enemies that were scary or interesting were the worms, they only appeared in a few (but pretty intense) chase sequences near the end of the game. They were very underutilized and if the worms got more attention than those stupid dogs, I would have actually called penumbra a good game.

The level design layout-wise is kinda interesting when you encounter puzzles but the visuals are boring, cliche, and ugly. The greenland mines are very grey and brown. The level varieties are limited to only 4 kinds of areas, the super brown brick walled corridors, the cramped grey rock tunnels, the super grey larger concrete rooms, and the few icy parts. There's really nothing unique about these levels except for the puzzles and there's not much incentive to explore and very few secrets to discover. I found the concrete parking garage-like levels to be especially dull. Literally levels I have seen in almost every game I've played except with less detail and less creativity.

Overall, while I love frictional and their work, I sadly cannot recommend Penumbra Overture unless you really, really, I mean REALLY want to hear the story, which is good, I guess. This game was Frictional's experiment, which told them what to do and what not to do when making a game, and it did a good job of this for frictional, and it laid the groundwork for Frictional's horror masterpieces. However, penumbra was really a base to build off of, but not really a very good game.

Reviewing games I played a long time ago:

I still remember when I discovered Penumbra at the time it was released, it was so new, fresh and terrifying that left me a mark in me. Of course, nowadays after the explosion the genre had after Amnesia it looks and plays a bit dated, but the isolated and lovecraftian atmosphere is still fantastic.

I beat this game in 2008 and still find it preferable to Frictional's later releases. At its core it is a physics-based 3D puzzling game but with a heavy handed emphasis on horror and puzzles ground in reality. One of my personal favourites. It is a high effort indie GAME, not an interactive movie, and not at all like the shovelware released in the past (decade) years.

It is best enjoyed with little external input, alone, stereo headphones, and with the lights out. It's relatively short standalone but if you happen to like it there are two direct episodic sequels making together a hefty adventure into the unknown. A dark descent, if you will.

I enjoyed it for the most part, but me sucking at puzzles like I do I couldn't get the fu ck in morse code puzzle for the life of me. It felt like i was getting a stroke in seventeen different places at the same time. But I also just sucks at puzzles. The story was interesting enough, the ending was a cliffhanger that was kinda....meh. But I'm interested enough to continue the rest of the franchise. That also being said I wasn't really into the physics combat and I understand why they dropped it for later games and Penumbra. In fact most of the time I just ran for my life by looking at maps quick and then memorizing routes. Overall I can't complain, it's a short game, I had fun and got help from friends. I can't really say too much that's bad.

Pros:
Plot is interesting
Red is pretty cool
Physics puzzles are interesting even though I suck
Thrilling

Cons:
Physics combat is ass
Cliffhanger ending, Overture and Black Plague should've just been one game but I understand why it wasn't

Overall it was good but either prepare to get a walkthrough to know what you're doing or prepare for a learning curve. Also it's a short game, so whether or not that's a pro or con is up to you.

Have you ever played Amnesia? Machine for Pigs? Then this is the game for you.
I bought this game in a bundle.
It took me about the same time Outlast and RE2 Remake did to beat one way through, getting mostly everything.
It's mechanics are old, as is the game.
You will feel a system shock element to it with the menu and combining things.
You fill feel the need to evade and attack from the shadows against the dogs like in Alien Isolation (limited combat).
You will feel debilitated and weak. It is purposeful. You are not running and gunning.
That is not this game.
Solve puzzles.
Play this game. It is good. It is simple. You will get a good 5 hrs of fun out of it. Play the other games too. They are good.

Really good game but not flawless. If you are into horror, I really recommend it.

+story
+game play
+music
+level design

-a little too much reading. (However, what you need to finish the game isn't too much.)
-the game was a little buggy which might be fixed in a future patch of course. ( when I was crawling into the a spider tunnel, where a bolder follows to crush you for the first time, the game saved after I died so when I reloaded the game, I spawned dead LOL) Not a big problem though, I just had to start from an earlier save.)

I'm now playing Black Plague which is the following game, which is needed to understand the story further.

Also, I first played Amnesia which is utterly a PERFECT game. I mean 10/10,

All in all, a really good game.

Cool, creepy stuff. I enjoyed the story, and the concepts in this game were pretty interesting. The setting was pretty unique (a strange and abandoned mine in Greenland), and the look of the game is nice. The enemies were not too scary (except for one) but were mostly very annoying to maneuver around. Some of the puzzles were a bit hard to figure out, but nothing ridiculous or far too complicated. Most of the puzzles were pretty cool, actually. Overall, it is a great classic horror game.

A chilling and brief experience for a amazingly terrific series! (spoiler free!)

Penumbra is a chilling game using a surprisingly good physics engine that still holds up today with a excellent narrative that gripped me throughout the game, always keeping me on edge with new questions and wondering what would happen next. While the gameplay and visuals may be considered lackluster and aged poorly, the story telling and narrative completely held up the experience and i can't wait to continue playing this series with black plague!

Summary!
Positives
+ excellent story
+ interesting characters and side characters though in game notes
+ physics still hold up better then most modern day games
+ atmosphere is unnerving
+Ending is excellent as it answers old questions whilst providing many more as stated in the intro!

Negatives
- poorly aged graphics and gameplay
- basic enemies get repetitive very quickly
- stealth is almost non-existent, easier and more efficient to just rush and kill the enemy
- The game is very short, took me around 4-5 hours searching everything such as notes and hidden artifacts. However the shortness can also be great for as it can be easily beaten at a leisure pace on a weekend afternoon (talking from experience!)

Overall 7.8/10!

A solid start for Frictional Games.

Story:
The story is kept very simple and mysterious. The game starts off strong, giving us a nice and simple goal, and a motivation to pursue that goal. The characters are solid, one character in particular being especially well written.

Voice Acting:
The voice acting is fantastic, Mike Hillard being the stand out.

Gameplay:
The gameplay is solid, with a lot of variety. Almost every object in the environment can be manipulated in some way. The puzzles are very creative, many of them being very physics based.

Level Design:
The levels have a very distinct theme to them. As the game progresses, the environments start looking more and more modern. The level design is great overall.

Sound Design:
The sound design is really good.

Atmosphere:
The game has a very lonely atmosphere to it. The game makes great use of it's lighting to create a truly foreboding atmosphere.

Conclusion:
Penumbra Overture is a fantastic game that I would highly recommend playing.

Not very scary compared to other games by these guys, but still a pretty enjoyable experience nonetheless. I would describe most encounters as annoying obstacles rather than scary ones. However, there were a few moments in the game that definitely caught me off guard. At the end of the day though for me the thing that kept me playing was the story. This game does a great job of presenting a lot of information to think about, while very rarely revealing answers. It's done in a pretty nice way that fits the atmosphere with a lot of information having to be discovered by simply witnessing it in your surroundings rather than just being told about what happened. If you're a lore-geek or like complex and compelling stories, I think the penumbra series is worth it. I do think you need to pay very close attention to your surroundings and the notes to be able to put some of the pieces together, but for me that just makes it even better story telling. Have yet to play black plague or requiem but I have high hopes
