Playtime: 10-15 Hours
+ One of the most scary and original Games of all Time
+ Unique concept of Gameplay without any Weapons, just running away and hiding
+ Stunning Graphics, Soundtrack and Atmospheres
- Hard Mode is very complicated to beat imO (Not really a negative point)
- Story doesn't turn out too logical, but it's mostly a matter of Taste

General shape of the story is; secret asylum experiment gone wrong and protagonist visits the asylum to make a report and become the part of experiment. Side stories and lore of the game don't feel strong but not below the average. Recording the exploration of the asylum with video camera and use of nightvision was very smart, added more layers to tension and atmosphere. Pacing of the game is good, Game is short which I like more beacuse of packed and refined experience.
Recommended.

Outlast
Hell on Earth
To start off, let me just tell you Outlast was the first horror game I played. I mean, I played the cringe horror Roblox games but they weren’t that scary lol. I did not want to play this game alone, so I asked my girlfriend to accompany me to survive through this game. I might be a grown man, but this game is enough to make me jump off my seat. This game scared the shit out of me but still was so interesting that I couldn’t stop playing it.
About this Abomination Forged by Demons
Storyline
Situated on top of the remote mountains of Colorado lies the long-abandoned Mount Massive Asylum. It was recently re-opened by the research and charity part of the Murkoff Corporation. Upon receiving a tip about this asylum being utilized in secrecy, you, Miles Upshur, a normal journalist decides to break into the asylum to get information on it. After getting in, he found the horrible truth that everything that is going on in there is something that lies between religion and science. He got in easily...but has to survive his way out. If only he knew the horrors that awaited him inside.
You can run...You can hide...but can you survive?
The first thing I noticed is that the main character had all four limbs and seemed pretty fit. If he is physically fit, why can’t he do the basic attacks like throwing some punches or kicks? Like for real, he can’t even push people away when in a life or death situation? He walks past so many items that can be used as ideal weapons but chose to ignore them. This is funny as anyone who is fighting for their life will use anything they find as a weapon, but our man Miles prefers to cower and run. So the game forces you to take a stealth approach all the time.
The only weapon you have is the ability to run and hide. You can also use the darkness to your advantage by using them as cover. Hiding under beds or inside lockers proves to be useful when you find yourself stuck in a corner, but your pursuer usually checks these hiding spots. So hold your breath and cross your fingers hoping you don’t get caught.
The Patients.....Are they your Allies or your Foes?
During this whole hellish “journey” you meet a lot of patients or should I say, victims of the Asylum. Each and every one of them showcases a different behavior. Some of them will straight off chase you until they kill you, some will attack you once and run away, some will only attack as soon as you get close to them but do nothing if you maintain distance from them. There are enemies that follow you around, whispering creepy-ass things. The weird categories are the ones that legit do nothing or cower in fright when they see you. It was funny seeing one of them walk past me and go and bang his head on the wall. A very small percentage of them will try to help you or give you some information.
I want to highlight this one thing in particular; your assailants are dumb as shit. I am legit crouching near the feet of one of the huge fat dude who is searching for me but he just walks past me. I am hiding under a bed and the doctor dude checks under the bed that is next to mine and in real-life circumstances, I should be clearly visible from his Point of View, but in this game, he can’t see me. Well...I guess this is for the best.
Oh fuck, I am in an asylum filled with people who want to kill me!
And yet recording almost everything that happens is important to him. Like bruh, throw the camera away and pick up an actual weapon! Well, the camera has one good feature...night vision. This enables you to see in the dark (Well, duh smartass) and gives you an edge over your assailants. But the only “overpowered” tool you have been given has a drawback, it (obviously) runs on batteries so when it runs out of charge, you’re basically fucked. Well, thankfully you can carry spares and can also find batteries in the asylum. But try not to rely too much on your camera. (instead, be a smartass like me and set the brightness to max
The only normal title: Graphics and Audio
This game was released in 2013 and had graphics that were considered “AAA Game Graphics” during that era. To be honest, the game still looks good even today. Mostly because you view everything through the camera most of the time so the camera’s static and other effects give it a natural Paranormal Activity-like effect. It perfectly suits the game’s hella eerie settings and theme. I was surprised to see that the game had nudity but no “No-Nudity” option. So this forces the game to stay in the Not Suitable For Work category. In conclusion, the game is visually scary which is perfect as that is the mood the game is trying to force upon the player.
Apart from what you see, what you hear tends to scare you more. When something scary as fuck is going to happen, the music starts to slowly intensify. The cheeky bastards who developed the game added some fake intensification. So you never know when to expect something to pop out of nowhere. This increases the fear factor by a giant notch.
Well, here’s another normal title: DLC(s)
This game offers only one DLC, “Outlast: Whistleblower”. This is another game mode where you play as a software engineer named Waylon Park who’s under a contract with Murkoff and also the man who emailed the journalists, including Miles, when the outlast started. This whole DLC basically narrates the story that led to this so-called “Outlast” and will also stretch past the events in the main game and act as the final chapter of the Mount Massive Asylum’s story.
Pros
- A Prime example of how a horror game should be.
- Creepy-ass music and visuals. The developers perfected this aspect so you don’t know when to expect a scare.
- A storyline that is confusing but will eventually make sense.
Cons
- Dumb AI.
- Dumb concept on how the protagonist cannot fight back.
- I faced some bugs and glitches. I was once stuck inside a door...literally inside a door. It forced me to restart from the checkpoint. There are also random teleportations that take place.
- No Replayability factor as you will know when to expect what. Horror games are fun only because of the surprise elements in them.
An End to this Horror
I hate this game...not because it’s bad...because it succeeded in scaring me. Jokes aside, this game is a perfect “Horror Game”. It has everything from perfectly timed jump scares to an overall eerie sensation. I 100% recommend playing this game if you are looking to die from a heart attack (Please don’t demonetize, it’s sarcasm). It’s an old game that goes at a dirt-cheap price during sales, so there’s a lot of emotional harm in buying it and playing.
Reviewer: Midplayz
Fuck you Red Barrels for scaring me...but I love you for making a beautifully scary game.

But why? because in this game, you must run...and run.and run.
run to finish your objectives while some one is also running behind you and calling you Little Pig!
in my opinion the game is not that scary if you get used to. after playing first 3 hour of the game, almost rest 3 hours were normal for me... because i understood how the game works.
Btw, game's story is very good and the graphic is also perfect. but in my opinion if you are looking for more scary games, there are better things out there.

Outlast Whistleblower DLC:
The expansion to Outlast is a prequel that sees the player in the shoes of the man who sent the email to Miles in the original game. It's more of the same story and lore just from a different character's perspective. Gameplay is exactly the same, navigate your way through the winding passages on your quest to find the item or items needed to advance to the next area with the occasional terrific chase thrown in. There are some new unique enemies in this one (one of them is probably the most memorable in the entire franchise) to spice things up but you're gonna get the exact same experience with this one as you did with the base game.

Hell is an experiment you can’t survive in
Introduction
Outlast has shocked me as a horror game with its creepy atmosphere and gruesome moments. Red Barrels has made a horror game that can get a little gory and is not for the faint of heart or for those that have a weak stomach. You must try and survive the horrors that plague inside Mount Massive Asylum. The game's atmosphere is very dark and hard to see, so you will need to use your cameras night vision to navigate through the darkness.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- A fantastic story that will keep the player invested.
- A terrifying atmosphere with the most gruesome enemies to chase you down.
- Erie music that capitalizes on the horror.
Cons
- The game mostly relies on cheap jump scares.
- The AI can be a bit weird at times.

The story starts with Miles Upshur, a freelance journalist, who goes to Mount Massive Asylum after receiving an email from an anonymous source. However, the inmates who are called The Variants have taken over the Asylum and killed most of the staff. While Miles is exploring, he encounters an impaled man who tells him must escape before it’s too late. As soon as he is about to do that, however, a man named Father Martin tells Miles that he must stay as he thinks he is an apostle sent to help him.
There is not much more to explain to regarding Outlast’s story, as it is straight forward from there, but a very interesting to experience. You will want to know more about the experiments that took place at Mount Massive Asylum at each and every dark corner. As you progress through the game, you will find notes left by doctors, and some are written by Miles; and you will see his thoughts throughout. These notes are not required to progress with the story, however, they are only there if you would like to know more about the story of the asylum. The story can get creepy in some segments as you see how some of the Variants act, while also running away from Chris, as he is everywhere you go. Chris is a Variant that will kill you if you happen to get in his reach and at times he may kill you in one hit if giving the chance. The atmosphere is terrifying at times, and coupled with the gruesome enemies that hunt you down, makes Outlast truly a scary game.
Gameplay
Nowhere is safe as you’ll be running a lot, often in total darkness, making it difficult to see what’s happing. You will be using your camera’s night vision to see through the darkness, though it does require batteries to function. You will need to hide from the Variants, mainly Chris, as he will be out looking for you and will do his best to kill you. You will be running and hiding from them while trying to get certain devices to work. These devices can range from generators to turn on the electricity or trying to drain the water with the pipes from the sewers. Some Variants will check in the closets and under the beds, you hide in, so make sure that you are in a good hiding spot. Also, make sure that your camera’s night vision is off, or you will be much easier to find. However, make sure that your camera is on so you can take notes around the surrounding areas. When I saw a Variant start to chase me was when I truly felt scared and is when I started to feel the horror aspect shine.
Now, Outlast may have a scary atmosphere with how the enemies chase you with their relentless pursuits and with the dreadness that the asylum has. However, I have two problems with the game. The first problem is that the game relies on jump scares, and they usually are pretty cheap. These jump scares can ruin the experience at times and can also be predictable as well. The other problem I had is that the AI can be a bit weird; I can be in total darkness; the enemy is right beside me and it will not see me. Now, I was playing on normal difficulty, there are times where I can be right near the enemy, and it feels like they can see me but they can’t.
Graphics and performance
The graphics of the game are done in a nice, creepy way that lets you feel the dark themes and dread in each and every area. The game was tested with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, 16 GB of RAM storage, and an AMD Ryzen 5 1500X Quad-Core Processor 3.50 GHz. The game runs really smoothly at 60 FPS; I did encounter some freeze frames but none of it was game-breaking and did not ruin the experience.

Soundtrack
The soundtrack of Outlast is very eerie, it’s not music you would really jam out to, but I have to give credit to Samuel Laflamme for composing a creepy soundtrack. Now my son is possibly my favorite out of the soundtrack.

Final Verdict
Outlast is a well-made horror game that is perfect for any and every horror fan out there. If you want a horror game that goes back to the genre’s roots of being scary, then this game is a must-have for you. The game may rely too much on jump scares and such, but what the game pulls off will make it shine as a genuine addition to the horror genre.

Created by Red Barrels, in 2013, 'Outlast' is a survival-horror game which, back then, set the standards of horror games. The game is, absolutely, a true horrific experience that will keep you pumped through it's whole story. Personally, I am a wuss when it comes to scary games but I had some friends who helped played it.
~Main Story~
You take the role of Miles Upshur, a freelance investigative journalist, who is investigating an Asylum. What he discovers is yours to find out, but you first have to face this psychic house of terrors. You must collect documents, record events, and, the most important of them all, get f*cking scared. Don't get discouraged by how useless you are though, for the story is well writen and will sometimes make you laugh and some other times it is a true horror game.
~Whistleblower DLC~
The DLC takes place, before, after, and in the middle of the story. You are not Miles anymore, as you are Waylon Park, who works at an operation call Murkoff Corporation. He discovers that he made a mistake, which was sending, the main protagonist, Miles the email that got him to explore this Asylum.
~Overall Impression~
Constantly meeting new enemies and constantly getting jumpscared or having to run away is always awesome. Red Barrels knows what she is doing and, apparently, she did it with 'Outlast II' too which I still have to play. What more is coming in 2021 is 'Outlast Trials', a single-player and CO-OP experience that I am totally waiting for.
Note that I played it with friends and some of them have already played so I was ,sometimes, warned of what was going to happen. That didn't stop me from getting scared so, you know, that thing means a game is good
Disclaimer: I got the game for free from Humble Bundle and the DLC was in the key too
Thank you for considering my review!

This is a frighteningly fun game. It brings a smooth history, great graphics and an excellent atmosphere. It is a game that manages to play with the player's senses, leaving him tense from the first moments.
Outlast perfectly fulfils its proposal and it is an excellent game. It is genuinely scary and it can be seen as a good stealth game.

It is extremely NSFW, bunch of nudity and gore.

never ever will I say that normal again. Tip : how to make trager juice ;squeeze.
Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.
This was a really good horror game actually. Sometimes it feels like some parts are getting too dragged out but this was a top a notched game.
I really enjoyed playing this, that fucking Chris Walker. If you're a fan of horror games I would 10/10 recommend this game. What make this game even more exciting is the music. I don't know what's scarier the music or the reckless naked men running after you.
The game itself felt perfect in length and mostly satisfying experience. It has so many unexpected jumpscares as well effective ones, that's what make this game unique versus other horror games like amnesia (even though amnesia is a different kind of horror game).
At some point I had to pause for a second just to enjoy the beautiful graphics this game has to offer.
I'll definitely recommend buying the dlc too. The game itself will make more sense then.
It blows my mind what the devs did with this game. Everything was well polished and nailed every detail a horror fan would want in a horror game. (imo). Just a tip. : wearing headphones while playing this game is extremely important for all I can know is I don't know how you'll make this through without headphones. Listen very carefully especially that part *SPOILER*
where you need to put the fire out etc. Ive finished the game 4 times now and it just gets better and better everytime I start up this game. It's just worthy of your time.
Enjoy the game, walrider

Aside from the extremely cheap jump-scares, there isn't a lot to marvel at in terms of horror. The A.I is janky as hell, not to mention frustrating when combined with the level design. The way you'll play is game is as follows: You'll enter a new area, something will block your path so you have to either activate some mcguffins in order to clear the way or find an alternate but ultimately incredibly linear route. At some point during this time you'll probably meet a big bad that will attempt to be as annoying as humanly possibly. Do you enjoy spending you precious time under beds and/or in lockers while you wait for some rejected batman villain to stop investigating a valve that you need to turn? Well you don't have to because the AI isn't massively hard to evade as long as you don't stop moving and close some doors behind you.
Once you've activated the mcguffins, made it past the big bad and probably activated some scripted event that'll take you to the next area you'll get a moment to breathe whilst you climb over a ledge and/or under a bed to advance. During this time a splicer from Bioshock will pop out and go boo. Now this would be all fine and dandy if the audio balancing weren't absolutely atrocious, so enjoy the sweet stock audio of screaming_girl.wav blast in your ears whilst a violin orchestra jams out. This is obviously done due to compensate how predictable or out of place these scares are. If you're a jumpscare junkie I'm sure you'll love these moments and revel in just how ingenious they are, otherwise you'll probably experience minor shock and discomfort at the sudden +10db that are now hammering against your ear drums.
In summary: this is a walking sim with a night vision filter slapped on it. If you're looking for more gameplay oriented horror games I suggest checking out Dead Space, or Resident Evil.
