https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2588809937
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2588810091

Without going into too much detail, the main protagonist and all the other characters/hostiles are frequently subjected to some sort of light that causes flashbacks and changes the way the world is percieved over time. The main story is constantly interrupted by flashback sequences to a traumatic past that are only related to the current events by the fact that religion was involved in some way. Once these sequences end, the character is in a new location while the player has no idea how he ended up there.
It may have been acceptable if this happened less frequently but the real issue I have is this: The light itself is an integral part of the story but it stays completely unaddressed apart from one hidden document. The most important part about the area the game plays in remains unresolved and basically gets ignored. And all the other events that occur during the course of the game basically felt like it simply went through a checklist of religious horror rather than coherent story-telling.
The last update of the game removed at least 3 chase sequences of the game, leaving entire areas without purpose that were solely designed to be run through while being pursued. I simply do not understand what possible reasoning could have been behind these changes.
The few sections that revolve around more than just running also feel like they weren't thought through well. Using the hiding mechanic (lockers/beds) is almost always simply a waste of time unless required.
That said, I hope Red Barrel's next game will regain my interest in the Outlast series. I'd love to see it resurface again.

For a game realised 2017, I think it has quite realistic and nice graphics. The storyline is interesting and a little confused, but it reminding me for Resident Evil 7 and 8, and so I think Capcom copied it from Red Barrels, but it's completely my opinion and may not be true. The design of characters is creepy, interesting and unusual. Music is very well fit against scenes during the game.
In the game there are quite nasty scenes, so I don't recommend the game to people who cannot stand a lot of blood. Also the game really is for people a minimum of 16+ age, because there are several sexual, disgusting scenes. And people who don't like not to know what is happening shouldn't play this game. Generally, the game is not made for abominable, easily nervous and people with a weak psyche.
I personally like the storyline and the idea very much and I will be glad if in future Red Barrels make a similar game with a similar plot (I don't want to spoil), but let the game be a little longer, because I have finished the game in 9 hours, which is good but it can be longer. I strongly recommend the game to people who like horrors, religion/religious events, tangled stories and reading, because there are a lot of files to read in the game. I hope you enjoy this amazing game!!

During the filming, the helicopter engines skip the report and the player in the role of Blake loses consciousness. After the accident, he finds out that Lynn is gone and the pilot has managed to turn to the bone in the meantime. Blake picks up a faithful camera and needs to find out what's going on. As soon as he walks a few steps to the nearest village, he finds that he is located in an area where two sects reside. One of them wants to find and kill the woman who is to bring the Antichrist into the world at dawn, while the other tries to find her to help the Antichrist into the world. And that woman is none other than Blake's wife Lynn.
But before you secretly support one side or the other, you should know that neither is completely right. The sect of mad Christians is led by a chubby priest who rapes little girls as part of his sowing of love and understanding, and if he does not like one, he declares her a heretic and has her executed. The second sect is led by a tall and thin figure of indeterminate sex, who constantly repeats that they are all heretics and deserve to die. And both sects want to kill you for some reason.
The main theme of Outlast 2 is psychological insanity, and not just sexual abuse in closed communities. If these topics bother you, it's not worth playing Outlast 2, because there are more than a lot of detailed links. In addition, the game will not miss a single opportunity to throw a shocking scene in front of you, or at least inscriptions on the walls or in diaries, which depict the traumas of members of both sects.
Now pray and sleep. 65%

Disturbing, tense and it kept me on edge from start to finish. I loved it just as much as Outlast 1. Each of them I found to be unique in their own way. Where the first Outlast was set in an asylum, this one is set out in the open world. The village, woods, mines and of course the school all really played a part in an immersive and terrifying gaming experience.
Highly recommend it. A must play for any survival horror fan!

In my opinion this game is scarier and more disturbing than the first.
The graphics are simply amazing but the story has lots of plot holes.
Oh and you play as some scrawny redditor.
I feel like this game lacks in some areas where it didn't in the first game.
But its still a solid, terrifying experience that I definitely recommend.
Just play the original game first.
This game was make me scream like a girl...! & made my gf laugh at me xD
hope you enjoy playing.
Good Luck????
9/10 in Horror genre, 100% will play it again in the future.

Maybe since we are in the mountains and it's all dark that you have to depend on your camera a lot and also you could explore a lot.
Back in the first game, you are limited to how much you can explore and I like that better than letting us explore freely.
But I like the school parts where we will get chased by that creature and it was scary as heck when he starts running towards me

Personally, I believe Outlast 2 is Red Barrels' experiment of adjustment in terms of settings, pacing and niche to see which is the better fit for their players. The mechanics in Outlast 2 remains (night vision, stealth, chase) but in Outlast 2, it's obvious that the developer decides to reduce the intensity (the nostalgic high pitched Outlast bg music during any chase isn't present until 60-70% into the game) and difficulty (during Normal mode, the enemies give up the chase WAY TOO quickly) to balance with the added complexity (open world, use of bandages, river sequences). This was a bold move on the developer's part and I don't mind but for those who finished Outlast and are eager to play the sequel, do set the game to HARD mode. Spoiler:
Happens mostly during a one on one cat-and-mouse chase such as Martha. Sis really gave after one sweep/ finished chanting her gospel quotes on two instances. Group chases are also inconsistent depending on where they take place. During the scene where I had to get the rope, I think I alarmed the entire village in doing so but none of them were consistent enough to continue the chase.
Here are my humble thoughts on the voice acting: 1) Outlast 2 doesn't confine the player to just one setting (church, caves, water etc) whereas Outlast 1 solely takes place within the horrors of an asylum. In Outlast 1, you are trapped with little to no ventilation and electricity, filled with gore and blood at every corner and space whereas in Outlast 2, you are thrown in a forest (an open space) with an abundance of oxygen (
Yes, oxygen tainted with radiowave signals but still oxygen nevertheless
so that's probably why Blake doesn't feel as trapped as Miles. Hence, the lack of anxiety and dread in his voice. 2) Being in a limbo of hallucination and reality, the occasional school flashbacks throw the protagonist off-guard especially during any chase scenes which creates more confusion than panic within his mind and reduces his awareness to his surroundings due to his growing inability to distinguish between past and present. This is the core difference in the psychological welfare of both characters as Miles did not have any inner demons to face hence was hyper aware to his surroundings (even fading footsteps caused a hitch in his breaths).
Outlast 2, all in all, is actually okay. I hope the developer brings back the old gamestyle than what has been presented in Outlast 2. Story-wise, I have to agree with most reviewers. Repressed trauma (psychological horror) and cult chase (survival horror) do not blend well together as one genre will definitely overpower or underwhelm the other. It's like tailoring your customer demographics to both B2B and B2C- there is no niche and leaves a confusing trail. I would suggest focusing on one and tailoring the game elements to it (Outlast 2 lacks stealth. Since Outlast 1 is solely on survival horror, stealth is equivalent to outsmarting your enemies and was as important as running during the chase).
Cheers!

If you are looking for one of the *scariest* games on Steam, this is it. It's relentlessly stressful from start to finish, and I'm sure anyone that's played it understands what I mean. I list it as one of my favorite games specifically because, out of the hundreds of horror games I've played, this is the only one that kept me on edge all throughout.
So, as a horror game goes, it's a 10/10 from me, and to be even more controversial, yes- it's scarier than the first game. Better is up to your preference.

But! IMO second game has slightly different feel. It has more open spaces, locations are mostly outdoor, story has a different vibe.
To be honest, I like first game more, but there are not so many great horrors, so I recommend to check it out if you like Outlast and want more :)

so let's start
You play as blake langermann who is investigating the murder of a pregnant woman
first of all, the graphics are really creepy and even more terrifying than the first version
compare to Outlast 1, your camera has been updated and it has a microphone now which you can track enemies voices even if you can't see them.
and the fun update of the camera is when you are collecting recordings and papers, you save them in your camera and you can replay it whenever you want.
as you go through the game, you will notice how terrific and dark the game is...
anyway, the enemies are more diverse than the first version and the environments are a little bit bigger and you won't feel any Claustrophobia or something but trust me, this option will make the game more tense.
the game is longer than the first version and you can enjoy the story and collecting everything in about 8-9 hours, but it can be finished in 2 hours and a half if you know the game already and try to speedrun.
anyway i completed the game on PS4 four years ago and i achieved the platinum trophy but i really love the game so i'm gonna do it again this time on STEAM

What I liked most about the Outlast 2 is writers and developers held nothing back. Use of gore and horror always get along with religious themes in media but this game is very straightforward about it's image and not just using religious themes as a tool of symbolism but puts in to the very core of the game. Many scenes can be considered as blasphemy which is I'm impressed and congratulate that writers able to go through with what they wanted to tell.
Outlast 2 being compared with the first Outlast as expected. I think it's better than the first game in every aspect. Sound design and music is very high quality, simply phenomal. Switches between levels and school parts are very smart design choices and it has a important impact on perspective of the protagonist which is shaping the story and lore.
Play at night with headphones, it will taste much better.
Strongly recommended for horror fans.

The only good things about it are the graphics and the music is really good. But the problem is you actually have no idea what's going on. You constantly have to run away and don't have much time to explore and try to figure out what is actually going on. The story could have been good if they gave you the time to understand. But as you always get chased there is sadly not much time for that. For me it was way too messed up. The first one was really fun to play but this one is just kind of annoying at some point. If you don't find your way quickly enough you are already dead and it is just frustrating when you die over and over. I didn't like the location that much either. I don't know something is just missing. The creepy atmosphere just wasn't there. This game has potential but sadly it got wasted. I don't even wanna talk about the end like seriously what is that. I didn't torture myself for such an ending. So to wrap it up: If you like the first Outlast then stick to it:)

But I'm giving this game a thumb down
The original price of the game is not great. I'd give a 5.8/10 if I bought it for actual 25 euros. I finished the game on Nightmare in one sitting. It has some of the best graphics in gaming, I'll give it that. The voice acting and the villains are good. Some chapters suck. (The water-plank part is painfully boring)
it is disappointing compared to Outlast 1.
The soundtrack is scarier than the game lmao.
Stealth feels non-existent, and the game won't let you immerse yourself into the world fully because of the constant chase sequences, speaking of chase sequences, they are very meh and poorly coded/thought-out.
Marta is a good jack-off material though. Such a shame since the first or so hour is promising and very good.

You'll play as Blake, a Camera man, searching for his wife who got kidnapped by the cults and f@k!n' r4p3d by the big bad Prophet name Sullivan Knoth. Your task is to get your wife back, record sh!t and avoid being chased by fanatic religion locals and a woman with a giant cross-axe that told you, you need to die for god. F@#K THAT, you crazy b!tch.
Outlast 2 have an incredible horror atmosphere, almost like you playing an open-world horror games. You can hide underwater, barrel, locker, trashcan and under people's house. You'll get chased frequently by these c@nts and they won't leave you alone until you die or made it pass through the next area. You still picked up batteries, record stuff and now documents to learn what happened to these people and what led you here.
Cons are focus on some aspect and bugs; I notice that if you played on Hard mode, then you switch difficulty to Normal during chase, there is a possibility that you made your A.I. bloody smart and they will still f@#k you up. In addition to that, it's annoying that documents collected only when record it, which unlike the first game, you just grab the documents and go f@#k off. There was this pages during a chase, which is bloody difficult to snatch, until you f@#k around and troll the A.I. and then you die. Also, there's a weird sh!t at the end,
after Knoth slit his throat
, the game will crash when you
finished filming him
.
In AMD A12 9720p / Radeon R7 / 12 COMPUTE CORES 4C+8G w/12GB RAM, Outlast 2 is playable in Med-High with 30-45fps. The game is running on Unreal Engine 3.5 (The engine from BioShock Rapture Remasters, Borderlands GOTY Enchanced and The Handsome Collection), and I can confirm the game is playable in this specs. There are some small stutter, but they'll go away eventually.

Graphics 10/10 - Is an immense improvement over the previous game
Mechanics 10/10
Sound 10/10
Jump Scares 8/10 - Very little amount of jump scares I expected.
Story 10/10 - Messed up but excellent, definitely something new.
This game manages to keep you terrified but at the same time motivated to keep going to find out more... this drove me to play this game as fast as I could not because I wanted to rush it but the curiosity this game drives is just overwhelming leaving you wanting more.
This game also is very very graphic so please if you are a sensitive viewer do not play this game but if you don't mind then I would really recommend this game because the imagery evolves the strength of the story even further supporting the dark horror that awaits the player.
Do yourself a favor, if you are a fan of horror games, then this game is an utter must, it isn't just some cheap scare wannabe but an actual excellent sequal that stands on its own amazing story.

While at the start it felt like a bit too much of a shock factor trying too hard to scare you. It slowly unfolded into a haunting and disturbing experience that kept me engaged in everything happening around me. Compared to the events of the first Outlast, this is like religious fever dream on steroids and LSD that never stops getting worse (in a good way).
Mixing the present events by throwing them directly at your face, with clever jumpscares and literally pissing off God. Along with the more surreal aspect of the game involving a very messed up mystery that still manages to catch you off guard.
Story-wise an incredibly different experience but still with the same spirit of an Outlast game. (Could do with less self exposition dialogue)

-Previous game confined you in an asylum, however in Outlast 2 you are given a culty town making new environments fresh, and made me feel like I was are progressing through the story.
-Speaking of story, Outlast 2 is a lot more story driven, and a lot longer than the first game.
-The soundtrack thrives with the gameplay, it's like bread and butter. If you are being chased you will be hearing a melody including a fork and a chalk board and it flows beautifully.
-The gameplay is like the first game, but it feels much more polished. The only problem I really had with the gameplay is in some sections when running from someone or something, you would get caught on some rubble on the ground giving you anxiety. Now don't get me wrong I love me when horror games give me anxiety but if it's a bug, comes off as unfair to my mental instability.
Ill give it a couple years of therapy to tackle this game again in Nightmare difficulty.

-The story is really good, although the school storyline is predictable. Also the main reason for anything happening is not directly explained easy. You have to make quite a few assumptions and put two and two together a lot, but once you do that it is a very fun story!
-The gameplay is very good as well for the most part. The first chapter is so slow and boring both in the real world and in the hallucination school storyline. Chapters 2-6 however are great, with chapter 3's school sequence and chapter 5's mine sequence being the true highlight. Gameplay can be repetitive at times, but still always fun and intense.
-The game relies on shock value a little to much. It can be very gruesome, but my god is it good.
-The only thing that your character does throughout the game is get more insane. Even with some of the stuff that happens to him, he appears to recover fine. Physically at least.
-The mini inventory, healing system, and recording systems are all great new additions to the outlast formula.
-All in all, the game falls in some spots (escpecially the first chapter and not explaining the story particulary well) but makes up for it for sure with the end story put together and incredible gameplay.

Now what about Outlast 2? One word: boring. Now don't get me wrong, the visuals and audio are superb as well. Me being a 3D artist I just drool all over this game's visuals. But the pace and story just aren't there for me. I couldn't connect with the characters, and the game doesn't feel scary at all. It's super, mega, hyper, ultra boring. I can't play it anymore and it's been a little over an hour of me playing it.

But its still a solid, terrifying experience that I definitely recommend.

In addition the map design is often confusing, escpecially when you are hunted. The game also has scripted hunting-scenes where you will find yourself running through a trial and error labyrinth with several dead ends. This is no special challenge which requires skill, this is just frustrating. You will die, try again, run into another dead end, die again.
Yes, I have read the reviews on steam, but wanted to give this game a chance. The graphic is fantastic, but that's it. If you haven't played outlast 1 yet, go for it. But do not try this one.

I don't know why Part 2 gets a lot of hate. Its a different game with different place and character you can't expect them to do the same thing twice.
Story : I liked the plot of the game and i know how the story was inspired from true events so that's why i loved this game even more.
Bit bummed out because the player can't defend himself but it felt like ur running away from your own fear and somehow the game knew what the gamer will find scary. It's not like the ghost were scary looking but they appear out of nowhere and sometimes its hard to calculate where they might show up.
I believe they improved a lot since the first game and if you're into Horror genre you should surely try this one out too.

Genre: First Person Survivor Horror
The Good:
+ Outlast 2 has all the stereotypical makings of a great horror game, it has a fantastic setting and atmosphere, haunting music, crazy cult fanatics and lots of gore and blood. It all comes together nicely and executed really well.
+ Mixing up the environments keeps things interesting
+ Story mode option for those that want to die less and focus more on the story and setting.
+ Good mix of jump scares and horror environments
+ Music that adds to the drama and tense setting
The Average:
+/- The gameplay, like the previous entry is all about surviving and hiding while you progress through the somewhat linear levels. The gameplay seems to be broken into two categories: 1) Run as fast as you can away from enemies to the next safety checkpoint. These sections are tense however the developers clearly want you to follow a predetermined path, deviating from said path usually results in a quick gruesome death. Its fun, but after a few of these sequences, you begin to notice a pattern. The second type of gameplay is when you are in an enclosed environment and you have to solve a basic puzzle or make it to the exit without getting noticed. The enemies seem a little too quick to notice you often resulting in some frustrating deaths.
Conclusion:
Outlast 2 is a good horror game and will definitely satisfy you if you are looking for this type of game, but those that play a lot of horror games will find Outlast 2 provides nothing new.

You are once again a guy with a camera who ends up in a hostile, creepy place full of ruthless killers. This time, however, much more of the game is spent outside, in a fictional Arizona location called Temple Gate. The environments are much bigger, but much is lost in the transition from the cramped halls of Mount Massive Asylum to the more open villages and mountains. That sense of fear from being trapped in maze-like corridors drives a lot of the excitement in escape sequences, and when you can see your stalkers from far away and circle around them, that fear evaporates.
Your foes are now religious zealots from different warring factions, all splintered off from one extreme Christian cult. The story is convoluted and seems as though Red Barrels just threw as many religious themes as possible at a wall and put in what stuck. The collectibles are far less interesting than in the first title, as much of it is inane religious babble that does little to advance your understanding of the world or plot. A very heavy hand is used in building the world and its characters. The villains end up so removed from normalcy and humanity that they become cartoons, devoid of anything that makes them worth trying to understand. A good villain usually has a point-of-view or motivation you can understand, and a reason for having it that makes sense, even if you disagree with it. These villains are just raving lunatics, even compared to the inmates in Outlast.
In addition to the main setting, there are many, many flashback scenes to your childhood in a Catholic school. While these scenes may tell the most coherent story - one that is all too real for too many children - they are also tedious and remove you from the core game far too often. The game would not have been worse without them, and certainly is not better for them.
Despite my criticism, Outlast 2 is not a bad game, nor a bad sequel. However, while I would recommend almost anyone play Outlast, or at least try it, this game is only for fans of the genre. It is simply not good enough to be worth everyone's time, but I did find it to be worth mine.

It is genuinely scary like the first game, and if a horror game manages to scare me it truly is a good horror game, as they usually fail to scare me in the slightest (RE4 didn't scare me one bit)
But for those who have been through trauma regarding hanging should be warned only play this if you can handle seeing it in a video game and it doesn't trigger you.
There are many depictions of people hanging in this game, and I really feel like it was overdone in this one. There is one repeating many times because it is a pivotal part of the story.
The explanation for it was also extremely dark but I guess that was the intention.

Its stealth mechanics are purely trial-and-error based and don't work very well. Certain enemies trigger when you walk past a threshold and immediately slice your neck open if you're in the wrong place. Several scripted chase sequences don't give you the time to make wrong decisions, where randomly turning left instead of randomly turning right means getting a serpentine tongue slammed down your throat. The environment is poorly sign-posted, and the way forward sometimes takes getting your guts pulled out a few times until you find the bookshelf you're supposed to push aside.
Despite having loved the original Outlast, I was disappointingly convinced that this sequel was a legitimately bad game during my first few hours with it. And on a purely mechanical level, I might still be able to make that argument. Its systems worked well within the tight confines and small-scale scripting of the original, especially when being menaced by a single antagonist. Outlast 2 is at its strongest when it pulls a similar trick, pitting you against one relentless horror and forcing you to evade it. But this is a much bigger game, with more complex environments and more enemies that often attack in groups, and it's in these situations where death starts to feel unfair and even unavoidable until you've failed a few times and figured out what the game expects you to do.
And yet, while Outlast 2 feels frankly bad to play sometimes, you grow accustomed to its bullshit and start to shrug off the failed attempts and dozens of deaths as part of the learning process. And once those frustrations slip away, you start to become immersed in the world.
And this game's world is so well-crafted - unrelentingly stressful, unspeakably grotesque, and uncompromisingly brutal. Were this a film, its imagery would put it right up there with the worst pictures in body horror, exploitation cinema, and the New French Extremity. But more importantly, it is laden with troubling themes, religious imagery, and profanely sexual writing that's far more disturbing than it is sexy. The graphics are somewhat cartoon-like and animations are stilted, which helps to alleviate much of the game's visual weight, but this has easily the most depraved imagery I have ever seen in a video game, barring perhaps a couple of memorable moments from the original Outlast's Whistleblower DLC. It's awesome stuff.
The atmosphere is also as beautifully realized as ever, this time taking place mostly outdoors, which adds lots of diffused light sources, fog, and some very strange weather effects fans of the Evil Dead remake's ending will appreciate. The night vision camera is still a captivating mechanic, forcing you into pitch black areas and navigating with very limited shades of green. The music is perfect, and the sound design keeps you on your toes with footsteps, whispers, creaking wood, and all manners of little ambient accents.
This all combines to make Outlast 2 a truly scary game. Having gotten into VR horror, I didn't think 2D horror games would still scare me. I was wrong. The opening few hours lean far too heavily on groups of hillbillies that don't feel very scary even as they're chasing you through labyrinthian shantytowns, but more intense villains await those who stick with the game. And it's especially in the back half of the game that pacing starts to feel much better, rarely giving you time to feel safe, and slowly ramping up tension to intense payoffs.
I've already spoken to a few gamers who immediately write off games like Outlast because of their inability to fight back, which, okay fine. But very few other games trigger such a visceral fight-or-flight response, and in this case, the correct answer 100% of the time is flight. So many moments of danger gave me a sudden jolt of adrenaline, where I found myself swiping the mouse for a 180 degree turn and running like hell in the other direction before even realizing I was doing it. That's real horror, and Outlast 2 is full of it.
I do wish this game had gotten a few more eyes on it before release, maybe some play testing to see where players were getting lost, frustrated, and fed up, because in those moments, the horror in Outlast 2 basically falls apart. And since those moments are largely front-loaded in what is a surprisingly long campaign for a game of this type, many players are likely to miss out on the much scarier back half. The story is also more satisfying towards the end of the game, where the disparate conversations and diary pages coalesce into something more tangible.
So I would say play it. Expect to think it sucks at times, and just accept that fact and let its themes and atmosphere get their hooks in you. It's ultimately worth the ride.

Outlast 2 pushed me to the limits. It was almost too much. This game includes much more gore, elements of shock and action compared to the Amnesia series, which I played before. So if you're more into cosmic horror, you're better off with these games rather than Outlast 2. Still a pretty nice experience but I am somehow glad I've done playing this game. Phew!

+ Good story.
+ Atmosphere.
+ Soundtracks
+ School sections.
The Bad:
- Some confusing paths.
- Short game length.
- They removed some heretics chase sections near the end which was unnecessary IMO.

graphics are scary good
story is somewhat understandable from the game
jumpscares are little bit overkill but alright
crazy cheap when on sale and worth the bucks for sure
------------------------cons
holy shit whoever designed the raft part should get a slapped in the face that raft is so fucking slow ı literally had mental issues from just imagining how can the stupid raft go so slow
if you are religous you will get hurt easily from some shit in the game this is not for you
there is way too many papers and they are unneccesarily long
overall if you like scary games like outlast 1 outlast 2 takes it in to the another level and it is definetly one of a kind
