I really loved it. It has puzzles not so complicated but it's complex enough to have fun, beyond the so cute art. I recommend it.

Beautiful game. Awesome story. Relaxing music.
Puzzles aren't too hard and even if you can't upgrade your character along the journey, you will be able to use different objects in order to solve the puzzles.
While the game could have been a little longer, it's worth every cent.
And the end will probably surprise you. At least I wasn't expecting it...

Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam.

Is this game a masterpiece? Yep, as long as you don't expect more than a linear puzzle-platformer.

It is a day like any other: We slumber peacefully in a secluded corner of the factory, when a flying yellow cube wakes us up. We follow the cube and are thrown into a tube by a mechanical hand ... The yellow cube now turns into a spear, which we can call back to us at any time. Armed with the spear, we now run from left to right. Soon we see countless other workers who look exactly like us and have also taken the same path as us - but each on paths running parallel to us. We can wave at them, but not interact with them directly. This is how Out of Line begins - and as yet the story makes absolutely no sense.

Out of Line is a (relatively simple) platform game with a focus on (not always so simple) different puzzles. We play the worker San, who tries to escape from a factory that has gone out of control. The game does completely without texts, the whole story is told purely visually. We have to recognize and correctly interpret various clues in the game environment in order to understand the deeper meaning and eventually grasp the entire story. The central mechanic revolves around San's spear. San doesn't consider this spear a weapon and usually doesn't use it to attack enemies directly. Instead, he uses his spear in different ways to avoid confrontations or to manipulate the world around him. The gameplay is similar to Limbo - we work our way from room to room in an unfamiliar dystopian world, always facing different challenges. Armed with the spear, which we can use as a ladder or a switch and call back to us at any time, we explore the colorful, but also deadly world. However, our demise is not tragic, we immediately reappear in the same room and can try again. Or think of a different approach.

We face mechanical obstacles or chasms that we have to overcome. Again and again, however, we are also forced to avoid mechanical creatures that kill us immediately when they discover us. This creates a threatening, oppressive atmosphere. As the game progresses, we can indirectly cooperate with other workers to advance at certain points. For example, we move a platform for the colleague, who opens a door for us in return. We also meet another creature that is on the run and befriends us. With a little imagination and good powers of observation, we eventually understand what Out of Line is actually about - personally, I would have preferred some conversations or at least explanatory text anyway. San experiences a whimsical journey through a fantastic, mysterious world full of danger. Nerd Monkeys, who I previously only knew through the two Detective Case and Clown Bot adventures, have done a great job. If you like classic puzzle platform games in the style of Limbo, you can't go wrong with Out of Line.

Conclusion:
Puzzle-platformer with beautiful hand-drawn 2D graphics, smooth animations, an atmospheric soundtrack that matches the gameplay, and a variety of different puzzles.

Out of Line

An attractive 2d puzzle game with a futuristic feel. Out of the Line delivers on aesthetics and atmosphere but could prove to be a little too easy for puzzle enthusiasts.

Out of Line is a hand drawn 2D puzzle platformer set in the confines of a regimented factory run by tyrannical machinery called Claws. The protagonist of the story is San, who is trying to escape from the factory.

Avoiding the lethal glare of the claws and manipulating lifts, platforms and environmental hazards, San must engineer an escape aided by the use of his javelin.

Once outside, San discovers a new world with new dangers, and encounters some allies to help him on his quest.

????️Gameplay????️

Javelin

The main tool that San uses is his javelin.

An arc appears showing you where the javelin is going to land. It can be thrown into various materials and used as a jumping aid to reach higher ground. The javelin can be recalled at any time and travel back to you wherever you are.

The javelin can also be thrown into the cogs of machinery to stop doors closing or mighty pillars from crushing you. Often, there are multiple cogs to sabotage, meaning you have to be quick with your recall and then throw again.

The javelin can also be inserted into switches creating a handle for you to push or pull. Pushing or pulling can determine the movement of platforms.

Pieces of rope can be tied to the javelin, which when fired, will create rope bridges for San to cross.

Occasionally, there are levels with temporary javelins. These javelins are only affective for a small amount of time and then will explode. Once they disappear, they can be used again at their collection points. Usually, the temporary javelins have to be placed and then you can use your main javelin to perform tasks before the temporary one expires.

Co-operation

During the game you will meet several characters who will aid you in your escape. You never control the other character but you do need to work together to complete tasks. Clearing their path of obstacles or pulling bridges across for them, for example, will allow them to repay the favor and clear your path too. The characters you meet often have different abilities to yourself so you need to take that into account when problem solving.

For example, some of the enemies have been converted by The Claw to mindlessly work for them and attack intruders. One certain character has the ability to tame the enemy and make them work for San aiding him in puzzle solutions.

You will only work with one character at a time but these moments are fleeting as most of the time you will be on your own.

Stealth

Sometimes you will need to advance but tread carefully under the noses of the Claw. They have a detection area which can change rapidly and if you are detected they will kill you immediately. During these stealth missions you will also have to perform other tasks whilst hiding away from their glare.

There are also segments where light plays a part in keeping you safe. Enemies and allies are afraid of bright light due to the dark environments they frequent. San can push and pull lights if available creating a path for escape.

Run for your life

Certain sections require you to run as fast as you can away from The Claw or other dangerous creatures. These include typical runner ingredients, performing puzzle elements whilst trying not to be caught.

Collecting Orbs

During your escape run you will find blue orbs strategically placed for you to collect. They don’t give you any special powers and are only here for achievements and an extra challenge. Once collected they are placed on to a tree at the end of the level.

The game will take you between four and five hours to complete but may require subsequent playthroughs if you want to collect all the orbs. There is no chapter select after the game completes.

????Overall Impressions????

Out of Line looks gorgeous with its hand drawn art and unusual backgrounds.

It has a futuristic dystopian atmosphere depicting scenes of slavery and injustice within the factory. The music is quite ominous and threatening, heightening the feeling of danger and desperation whilst trying to flee your prisoners. The graphics enhance the gloomy and claustrophobic feel.

The game isn’t generous with its explanations. Your origins are never discussed. There is no voice acting or text. You seem to look the same as everyone else but we can only assume why. Out of Line is a game relying on your interpretation. The only clues we receive are hand drawn paintings on walls depicting events and they’re very basic and just seem to mirror your abilities rather than offer any clear picture of what is happening. It’s not a narrative game with a defined story, but more of a puzzle game with a loose tale joining scenes together.

Once we are out of the factory, environments look brighter and more detailed. A stark contrast to the depressing confinements of the factory. There are some nice-looking areas and I really liked the movement of the main character. He looks quite charming with his distinctive run. Even though there is no voice acting or text, his mannerisms can create emotion, and the game does this very well. Often, we see San expressing his feelings through body movements, and the soundtrack is an excellent accompaniment to this. They help to make the game more than just a run of the mill puzzle title.

The puzzles are reasonably varied. San uses his javelin to perform a number of tasks. The aiming mechanic is functionable. Sometimes, I felt that the arc was difficult to control if you were trying to be precise. I think a mouse and keyboard would probably be easier but these moments are rare.

The co-operative scenes were enjoyable. The characters you help are colorful and charismatic and add extra drama and interest into the game. Story elements are revealed during these junctures and it is here that we see most of the poignant moments.

The stealth sections are incredibly easy. I think I completed these on the first try on most occasions. The runner sections are also relatively painless and will only take you a few tries before you know the strategy and complete them.

The main puzzle areas are much harder, but still not too difficult. I struggled twice with solutions during my playthrough but the rest was quite straight forward.

The switch mechanics proved to be a little annoying, especially when there were timed puzzles. It’s not always obvious which way you have to pull the lever. Sometimes, nothing seems to happen and by the time you try again it is too late. This did cause a few moments of frustration.

????Conclusion ⚖

Zitat:
Out of Line looks original with its hand drawn artwork. It boasts a good soundtrack depicting a futuristic and dystopian landscape which is atmospheric and interesting.

There isn’t much of a story, mostly leaving things for your interpretation, but the characters are charming.

The puzzles are nothing new, typically involving manipulation of switches and buttons, but the javelin mechanic is quite neat and the stealth and runner sections offer a rest bite.

The puzzles won’t challenge most puzzle enthusiasts, and the narrative won’t appease story lovers. I still had a lot of fun with the game though and could easily recommend it if you’re not after too much of a challenge.

I am a huge fan of indie puzzle platformers, but I felt that this game could have been more of a story rich experience.

Granted, the art style is amazing. But to be honest, no matter how beautiful the world looks, the environment design does not make sense. The puzzles are far too simple, with most sections having you to simply make it to the end by pressing down the right movement button. It felt like the environment was made just to accommodate a puzzle, rather than give meaning to the overall story.

Out of line is far too short of an experience, and it wasn't fulfilling for me (Yes, the length of the game does not define its quality. I've played shorter games that were more fulfilling). I would however, recommend picking this up on sale.

Where is my deluxe GOTY edition? :P

This game is a great experience to play. Visual art, music, space and puzzles combine to invite you to think beyond while playing. I have seen criticism to the simplicity of some puzzles - I should say that competitiveness is not the message of the game, rather cooperation with friends (of different sizes). One idea seems to be that objects and people are only as good or bad as the purpose they get. In this game, there is a lot to reflect on man and machine.

The visual side is very strong as well as the music, both providing the player with the innerspace that many games discard in benefit of enhancing the agressiveness ('don't think, shoot!'). Regardless of previous points, there is great freedom of interpretation about the meaning of the things we perceive when playing.

Much can be said, but for last, it's impossible not to mention the spear: the ultimate instrument in this game is almost personified as the light contained within can be shared to reach greater heights or even be seen changing the nature of things. Great mechanics around this spear bring great esteem to this game too.

Out of Line is an incredibly good platforming game, the mechanic of using the spear to help you platform is a fun and unique idea making the game more enjoyable than other platformers. It's art-style and story-telling are both great and the puzzles are somewhat challenging yet still possible and enjoyable.

Some complaints I would have is that giving a 2D platform game a 3D art style made some confusing elements for myself as a beginner. Specifically on the first chapter/stage, I often found myself unsure on where to go and sometimes jumping over obstacles which were simply there in front to add more atmosphere.

If you want a neat platforming and puzzle-solving game, this game is perfect to buy for a cheap price.

Since Playdead’s 'Limbo', there has been a proliferation of puzzle platformers on the indie scene, including its spiritual successor – 'Inside' – a game many see as the pinnacle of the genre.

'Out of Line', clearly takes inspiration from these games, but has enough unique elements to make it stand out from the crowd.

The hand-painted art-style of the game is wonderful, reminiscent of Studio Ghibli films at times. The love and care that poured into the game by developer, Nerd Monkeys, is clear from the off – and it comes as no surprise that it’s already won awards, even before release.

You play as San, a lone child trying to escape a dystopian world controlled by an ominous entity. Like ‘Inside’, the story is told through actions rather than words. And it is down the player to interpret it in their own way. It’s a game about identity, and rather than being ‘inside’ or part of something, you are on the periphery, and know very little about yourself, ‘Out of Line’ you could say.

Perhaps the most unique thing about the game is the spear wielding mechanics. Rather than use for combat, your golden spear allows you to create platforms, operate switches, and solve some rather imaginative puzzles.

Along your journey to escape the oppressive mechanical regime, you’ll encounter enemies, some will chase you, others try to grab you from above.

You’ll also meet other people and befriend strange creatures who aid you in your quest, one of which becomes central to the story, and provides many of the game’s most memorable puzzle sequences.

‘Out of Line’ is well paced, with new mechanics introduced regularly. Checkpoints are generous and progression is satisfying. And there’s very little hand-holding – it's all about self-discovery and testing the limits of your spear.

I particularly liked the incongruity between the beautiful painted natural world and the industrial evil plaguing the land - perhaps a metaphor for humankind’s ambition, and greed. From a creative and artistic perspective, I see ‘Out of Line’ as embracing the typical ideologies of Romanticism – a movement pre-occupied with escapism, individuality and admiration for nature.

But, that’s just my interpretation - I’m sure you’ll see things differently.
