Other than this the game has co-op, a squad management and a very detailed damage system, which is nice.
For example your arm or torso can get shoot and damaged. You reload slower when your arm is hurt or you cant run when your foot got shot. If you dont bandage you bleed out.
But yeah i didnt play for long, because i just couldt kill the enemys in longer ranged fire fights while they shoot me no problem. Sometimes i got shoot out of nowhere where i couldnt see where the enemy was. Fucking anyoning.

Even with my growing interest in milsim games, I haven't played any yet besides this one and its sequel, Operation Flashpoint: Red River, so I can't compare it to any others out there. I don't have any real world military experience either so I can't judge it as far as realism goes. I think it's a pretty good game for the time it was released, and it mostly holds up going back to it. I like how careful it forces you to be as a single hit could potentially kill you outright on any difficulty setting, and for the most part this adds a fantastic sense of tension and immersion, especially when playing with headphones. I actually found myself ducking down in my chair instinctively when I was getting shot at, especially while exposed and on the move. However there's a downside to this as well, since its smart to engage enemies at a far enough distance that they aren't very accurate you may often find yourself attempting to hit your targets at ranges of over 300 meters, sometimes with only ironsights to help you. This can get a little tedious, and costly in terms of ammo (which is very limited compared to more casual shooters). It's also pretty tough to get extra ammo for your initial loadout, you pretty much have to wait for a teammate to go down then take the ammo on his body, or just grab a PLA rifle instead. Enemies are just as prone to lead induced death as you and your teammates are, so even though you're always outnumbered it mostly feels pretty fair, and you can usually avoid firefights by keeping your distance and setting your team's ROE to return fire only.
The campaign is a bit shorter than I expected, there are only 11 missions and if you're very lucky or highly skilled you could finish the entire thing in about 5 or 6 hours. I took a total of 9.5 hours for the campaign alone, another 45 minutes or so to finish 6 of the short bonus missions (there seem to be another 4 plus a couple exploration missions without enemies) but those remaining ones seem to be pretty B.S. in terms of difficulty so I probably won't bother trying to finish them. I found the difficulty of each campaign mission to be inconsistent, some are downright easy while others are more challenging, and I had the most trouble with mission 6 as opposed to the later ones. I actually had to cheese it, using my men as bait while I ran to the objective and prayed I'd hit a checkpoint before I died. I see some complaints in other reviews about it being janky, and while I do agree with that it isn't too bad for the most part. It was only with the last mission that I found myself struggling more with the game's flaws than I did the PLA. I think a quarter of my deaths were in that mission alone, many of them because my men wouldn't fire at the enemy or advance despite being told to.
The game's various mechanics and controls were pretty simple for the most part, with the command system somehow managing to be too simplified and over-complicated at the same time. It can take upwards of ten seconds to issue a single order or call in either air support, artillery or mortar fire if you have those options, during which you probably have to expose yourself to enemy fire. There was a mission in the latter half of the game where I nearly got myself and my whole fireteam killed because I needed to use artillery to take out some armoured vehicles, while they were shooting at us. In that same mission I was also given verbal orders that contradicted what was on the screen, which caused three failures and much frustration. That was pretty annoying as well.
Overall the game certainly lacks polish compared to modern titles, and anyone who wants to try it should prepare for some B.S. at times, but if you get it pretty cheap (I'd say 70% off or a higher discount) and don't expect to play it like Call of Duty it's a pretty good starting point for those looking to get into milsim games.

Only issue - Prepare to walk. Alot. If you're in the Infantry in real life, prepare to play a video game about your job. You will get dropped off and move for klicks upon klicks to get to your OBJ, only to then have to travel more klicks to hit the next one and then the next one.

I played the first Operation Flashpoint when it was released, but it was clunky and pretty hard to play for a kid, because it was properly the first game that was close to a military sim back then.
Dragon Rising is not really a military sim compared to the first one, but it's also very far from being similar to BF or COD.
For me the controls were too complicated, autosaves are too far from each other and your companions AI is not that good, so I didn't played for too long. I just have to many games to play, to put work into this, until it's fun.
Maybe I will try it another time again, when I'm more in the mood for such a game, because there are not that many military sims out there and the game itself is really not that bad.
I got this game very cheap in some bundle, otherwise I wouldn't have purchased it.

I recommend the Island War mod, however just install the first Island War mod + lighting patch. The other stuff (updated island mods) makes the game crash for me.
Pick it up on sale if you like FPS military games

But despite what I said above, lets try comparing it to ArmA series:
Game has much more polished physics engine (which even makes grenades usable; ArmA players will understand), and is less buggy overall (though still has noticeable amount of them).
Game has much more intuitive interface. And friendly AI actually listens to orders (again, if you played any ArmA game, you will instantly feel how much easier it is to command your squad).
Enemy AI is surprisingly decent - they actively make use of cover and sometimes flank player. Shame that their Star Wars stormtrooper level of accuracy prevent them from being an actual danger to player (although there are mods that fix that, you can find them with simple Google search).
Other weak points include terrible FOW (its extremely zoomed in) and weird filter which makes it look like if sun itself burned all the colors in the world (though, to be fair, almost all games of that era used weird filters, even ArmA II, and it can be fixed with mods).
Hope that helps you decide whether you want to buy this game or not.

Another thing I like is the plot which I thought was convincing. It starts with China backed into a corner due to its faltering economy, and end up having no choice but to invade the Sakhalin island for its oil reserves. Diplomatic talks between China and Russia end in a stalemate as China claims original ownership of the island. Russia attacks mainland China and calls to the US to retake Sakhalin. Bound by treaty arrangements made after the end of the Cold War, America agrees to face the Chinese People's Liberation Army. The plot hints at China being an expansionist country illegally expanding its borders. It's relatable and makes geopolitical sense especially if you compare that to China's illegal annexation of Tibet, Mongolia and East Turkestan, not to mention the rest of their territorial disputes with 18 countries.

The gun models are way to big, the FOV is so so low. and why your team can see really well they are stupid and won't do anything unless you tell them to and one time i tried to move to the right to not shoot a team mate in the back they mimic your movements so you can't unless you tell them to move first. the last thing is the shooting well firing 25+ bullets at a stationary enemy while not moving my mouse on single fire only hit twice so pretty bad. so if your really into military sims you might like it.

Final Point: A Wasted Opportunity out of 10.
P.S: I know this game is 11 years old but it didn't get worse over time. It was bad when release day too. Even first Operation Flashpoint (now it's goes as Arma Cold War i guess) is better than this game, gameplay-wise.

Ignore my playtime, I played this a lot outside of Steam.
If a game has the audacity of using the Operation Flashpoint name it better be great, unfortunatly this is far from it. Mind you, it's not terrible, but it's stuck in a limbo, if you want a military sim you are obviously playing one of the Arma games. If want a more arcade experience you'll probably rather play something like Battlefeld.

It still holds its own in co-op and challenge to the average player. Like a mid point between BF and ARMA. Simpler controls than ARMA, with enjoyability of BF especially when played in COOP with mates.
NOTE: you need to use hamachi or something to play over LAN when not in the same house as your mates, as the internet servers are no longer running.

If you are in the very low end maybe think about it, but even then I'd suggest Arma II as it has quite a lot content and mods.
