- The world is your canvas. Design and play on a fully detailed real world map with 1cm resolution. A rail link from Lisbon to Shanghai? Anchorage to Buenos Aires? Cape Town to Rabat? Why not!
- Your tracks will need to respect real, existing roads and streets. Too many crossings may make your designs not viable.
- Streamlined circulation mechanics so you don't get bogged down by the details. Build and run a large network easily.
- Trams, subways, commuter, regional and high speed trains. Tunnels, viaducts and ground tracks with a variety trade offs on the environment, train speed, and your company wallet.
- Simulated train and station demand, down to simulating individual passengers. Passengers can, and will, engage in train trips that make them board multiple trains, waiting in transfer stations.
- Demand flow based on time of day and time of week, with time zone support. Find it boring when night time comes and the stations are deserted? No problem, start a new line ten time zones away.
- Passengers will continuously rate their experience based on the trip time and the fares you impose on them, with effects on the demand of the stations they visit.
- Single player and offline first.
- Optional cooperative multiplayer: build together in real time with friends and others you invite to your hosted server session.

you can play this game offline, all the map data comes with the game! besides that you can make very complex networks with the tools provided, the tools are fairly simple and not very hard to understand! this is a great game if you love trains, logistics, or living out you dream of making millions a day using public transport!

NIMBY Rails truly is a work of genius.
Why, you may ask? Because it lets you build any railway, real or fictional, anywhere in the world. You want to recreate the Trans-Siberian railway? Sure, go right ahead. You want to build a railway in antarctica? Yep, you can do that as well, but don't expect it to make any money...
Having touched the financial aspect of the game already, there's two modes:
- Normal Mode, where you're given a thousand million dollars, and the option to take out up to three loans of up to three thousand million dollars each. You need to make a profit by transporting passengers or else you go bankrupt.
- Unlimited Money, which is basically sandbox mode. You can build whatever you like, wherever you like, no matter the cost.
In the base game, you get three types of rails plus bridges and tunnels, as well as a few trains with fictional names, which are based on real life trains. However, Carlos, the developer, has implemented Steam Workshop integration and mod support from day one, which allows you to download (at the time of my review) hundreds of train and track mods, most of which are of really high quality.
Being an Early Access title, the game is still being developed, and new features are added with updates on a more or less regular basis. Bugs are almost non-existent, which I was very pleasantly surprised by. In all of my currently over 200 hours of gameplay, I haven't encountered a single bug, though I do not want to deny the possibility of there being a few minor ones. It's Early Access after all.
TL;DR: NIMBY Rails lets you build any railway you want. The choice of trains and tracks is steadily expanding, both in the base game and the Workshop. If you want a bit of a challenge, try playing without unlimited money and see how far your funds take you. Another plus: NIMBY is very polished for an Early Access game. So if you like trains or building complex networks, this is the game for you!

I feel this is THE definitive transit game that has ever been made, one that is *mostly* rooted reality... hahaha :D
Also I am recommend this game because of the vast improvement that it has come over the past year (2021), thankfully it isn't as frustrating and buggy and crash happy when I originally started playing the game. Do hope that an in-game soundtrack will come down the line and maybe some form of progression/achievement system! That would make this game even better tbh!

Overall still an awesome sandbox where you can build literally anything
(some of the) Things to do in this game:
- Build your local commuter network
- Build a better network if your local one sucks
- Build the most iconic railways globally (trans-siberian et al.)
- Build a global rail network
- Build whatever you want

NIMBY Rails provides endless freedom to create whatever journeys you want. Whether that be a small, pacey lines ( that connected two stations in close proximity, to creating feeder lines to service your national services, which, in turn, can be used to supply PAX to your international services. Customization is another great feature, customize lanes with any name, give each line a code, set the base ticket price, as well as costs per km, the line colour, train liveries, and with a future update coming this quarter, you can sub categorize, and sub-categorize, your services into tags, to better manage your services into regional, or national, tags, making it easier to navigate.
Micro-managing so much within your game adds an extra demand to play with. Want to change your company name as and when suited? In two clicks, it's done. Manage a detailed overview of your business, breaking down your accounts for each individual line, your running costs, maintenance costs, ticketing - from fares, refunds and compensations, to how many customers your individual services are running in real time. This can all be broken down into even further sub categories, from yearly, to on the day, in real time.
There is also customer satisfaction to keep an eye on, helping you understand line, and even station, satisfaction. This enables you, in real time, to understand where you're lines are performing above expectation, and where they're lagging, or they may be performing okay generally, but because of a train collision down an approaching track has made the station redundant until it's noticed and fixed accordingly, giving you an amazing overview on how to deal with problems in real time.
Even though it's still in Early Access, there is a dedicated modding community which has always delivered to add new content frequently. And with a dedicated developer, who is clearly passionate and devoted so much of his time to this game, it can only get better, especially with the contracts system, public opinion of your network and freight system being all but a few of my eagerly awaited content to drop.
As you can tell, I'm still very much addicted to this game, and still as hyped for it's content as I was when I first purchased it.
Feel free to drop any questions If you still need more information on my current play.

It takes some time to understand how the game works with building, routing and all of that. However once you get a hold of it this is a game you can spend hour after hour on either re-creating real life railways or designing your own unique network.

Now, you won't get beautiful graphics and 3D towns you would normally get in a regular train game, but what you do get is very interesting. Instead of building your trains in a small, procedurally generated environment, you get to build in the real world. And not just in a portion of the real world, you have access to the entire world at any given moment. You can recreate real or historical lines, or you can build a railroad line through your hometown and see what it would have been like to have access to high-speed rail.
The game focuses much more on the management of your trains, you will need to place signals correctly, establish lines, and determine the train schedule on your lines. Additionally, demand fluctuates throughout the day, so adjust your schedules accordingly.
I personally have really enjoyed adapting old and current railroad lines around my hometown and seeing how train transportation could work in my area (where there is no public transportation for at least 50 miles, and even then, there's very little).
Pros:
- Trains
- Trams
- Let's you build literally anywhere in the entire world.
- You can reopen long abandoned railroads.
- You can make abandoned railroads. I guess.
- STREET RUNNING IS POSSIBLE (with tram tracks).
- There is effectively no limit on the size or complexity of your rail network. You can expand across the globe (other than the limit at which your computer will simply explode from the sheer scale and beauty of your rail empire).
- You can pretend that public transportation doesn't suck wherever you live.
- You can make profitable lines to prove that a line here IS a good idea.
- You can show those politicians exactly what they should be doing instead of building yet another suburb.
Cons
- Graphics could be better (I would like to see optional satellite imagery).
- Openstreetmap data isn't always consistent. For example, sidewalks in my area are only partially mapped, which makes the sidewalks disappear and appear seemingly randomly. Fields are also rarely mapped (the game uses openstreetmap data). However, these are not really issues that can be solved by the developer.
- The game limits the angle at which a crossing can be made, which seems reasonably, but it can actually prevent the placement of real-world crossings.
- There's no imperial measurement option. I know metric is better, but when the speeds are listed in kp/h, I have no idea how fast the trains are actually moving.
- Railroad crossings are pretty bland at the moment. They exist, but only as a small indicator near the track.
- They game is really lacking in terms of customization. It would really nice to be able to add some decor to the map, as it can often be really boring to look at.
- Unlike other games, where their nice graphics give you something to look at while exploring your vast transportation network, all that can be seen here is small, bland icons. Understandably, it would be very difficult to make a 3D game on the scale of the planet (unless you're Microsoft and have access to nearly unlimited resources), but it can be boring to simply see numbers and icons moving.
Overall, pretty great.

Game is constantly being updates, which can be hard to adapt to if you've not played it in a while. Nonetheless, I keep coming back to it. Just be sure to read user guides as they're not only informative of gameplay but rail network terminology. You actually have to learn how real life rail networks work in practice. So super realistic and can be incredibly detailed if you want it to be.
10/10. Very excited to see how the game develops over time.

You can throw around with money like nuts, especially because you start with 1.000.000.000 (which is till this date not changeable).
As soon as you build one railnetwork nothing really pushes you to expand, because the income is just ridiculously high. Instead you could just press the speed button and leave it running.
I would wish it would have had a more goal oriented/hard mode.
This review should be a warning for likeminded players.

It's going very well for early access.
What should be added from my point of view:
- single tracks
- clip platforms to the track
- curved platforms / following the course of the track
- a connection that turns stations that are close to each other into one
- more targeted behaviour of the branching tool
- multiple traction
- for the future: bus lines, ferry connections

My first line? A little tram system that ran around my hometown in Northern Ireland, and then connected with Belfast. I know these places personally and intimately, and despite the shall we say functional graphics it is incredibly easy to imagine myself walking down the street and actually seeing a tram trundle by. I found I hadn't laid out the most efficient tram system in the end, but one which connected the places in town I personally would have most wanted connected, and I set the fares at a silly low level because I thought of how useful it would have been for my wee granny to be able to get around cheaply.
Of course with the whole world open there's nothing stopping you from going and building somewhere completely different, whether it's faithfully replicating the London or New York Underground systems, a completely original train network to handle the hyperdense megacity of Tokyo, or establishing a high speed rail system around the continental United States.
I am legitimately going to try and build a rail tunnel connecting Europe and North America and the fact the game lets you do this *at scale* is probably all that needs to be said.

General Gameplay Comments:
Its early access, and as such it does have a lack of some features, an example would be train templates... Another example is there is currently no single track option. things like signals are also not present.
But this stuff should not take to long to arrive once the base and foundations are completed..
I know some of it is planned from reading the boards like the single track. also planned is tweaks to the current management side of the game. Currently you cant view global happiness via a menu system, instead you have to click on each station.
So, its nice to know that changes are coming, but right now its largest downfall is probably in the management systems. They are not bad nor terrible, just not complete and as refined as they will probably become over time.
As you learn the current mechanics it becomes mainly a track laying experience, plus you will also notice some balancing issues, such as the AI(pax) expectations
Conclusion
Is it worth getting...
In its current state if you relish the prospect of mainly recreating a real life network over the management side of this game then its a real winner. but if you want to actually achieve happy customers on real life layouts forget it.
however factoring in the games mechanics doing this is not the best course of action. I believe that when other things are added like single track real world lines will begin to come more of a reality in conjunction with the current game mechanics.
but also in its current state i also have recently starting to become frustrated with some of the mechanics, particular the AI expectations and also content wise, or maybe more apt longevitiy speaking the game is better played with unlimited money and treat as a track laying game. it is starting to feel boring and pointless after 50hrs
But, early access...
So if some of my remarks have discouraged you, dont cross it off your wishlist...
Because the game has massive scope, huge potential, and its still in development. In addition to this if your prepared to tweak (and/or) add some fake lines to the real life routes things can more viable. Not to mention if you completely ignore real life routes altogether then you can achieve more pax satisfaction overall by using the games mechanics more effectively
The games development should bring new management systems, simplify (and/or) complicate other aspects of it.
so yes thumbs up...
however if certain things dont change in the pax expectations that make me happier then this review is going to change to thumbs down even if the words dont alter

To Be fair, there is a little bit of jankiness around the edges, but that is more than expected for a game on Early Access. What is perfectly clear however, is that the Developer has put a lot of thought and love into making this game, and with the use of Online servers such as Discord, is always using the feedback of players to better adapt and perfect an already outstanding game.
Yes, the fact that the entirety of Planet Earth acts as an ever-expanding canvas for you to build from can be quite daunting, but in the few weeks this game has been live (as of writing this review) people have build entire cities, nay, entire country networks using trains, trams, and even Trains pretending to be ferries! (And as for me, a whole lot of Australia will soon see the Physigist Transit Network on it's front step.)
Kudos to the developer for such amazing work, and here's to the future!

From subways to high-speed rails, with a real Earth map with unlimited details, I have no reasons but to give a recommendation. Start with building exiting hometown subway lines, then realise those lines that are still on blueprints and plannings. How enjoyable it is! Some games are too real with quite small maps (TF2, CSL), some are with large maps but unrealistic cities and roads. (Don't remember the name).
Finally, there is one game, THIS ONES, that pops up on steam and shows such a satisfying characteristic even in early access. I wish the following updates will bring even better experience.
Some suggestions regarding future changes:
- More real-world vehicles,
- Stations with more details and parameters that can be customised.
- More advanced transfer AI as mentioned by other players as well.
- Adjustable population density at the beginning. (Or maybe latest maps for China mainland. Some out-of-date map data results in those areas with less population than they currently have, and this may attract more purchases from Chinese players)
- Maybe flight or ships in the far future?
- More currency and languages supported.
Best wishes, that's all I have now!

- Opening/closing panels is a bit wonky right now
- The camera controls are a bit non-standard & slightly frustrating
- Having some road names (not just place names) would be great for laying out real world networks.
- In the roadmap, but the options available for interchanges/wye/switches feel limited right now
- Having different interest points like airports, offices/job density, and stadiums to generate specific kinds of demand would add a lot of depth
