In Nightfall Hacker, you’re a freelance “white hat” hacker - accepting jobs, winning hacking battles against rogue software, and using your earnings to buy upgraded programs to face even stronger enemies! Along the way, you discover that some companies are struggling against an adversary - AKA black hat hackers. On a 2D grid, you’ll need to plan your programs’ actions strategically. One wrong move and the malicious software wins.
I have played Nightfall Hacker to full completion, down to all of its achievements and all of its endgame content.
I find it to be a very good game with a decent amount of content.
While it is certainly not hard, the game's AI is quite effective and a lot smarter than the AI of the game it is inspired by. It might not be as coordinated or as strategic as a human player and it doesn't always know the most effective moves, but it's not that easy to fool under most circumstances either. For instance; you have to learn how the AI thinks in order to get certain strategies or tactics to work the way that you want them to.
The level of AI is complemented by the strength, variety and numbers that the enemy side often gets to control, in a variety of different scenarios. Some maps make fighting easier for the player while others make it harder for the player.
Even so, the player has a huge variety of tools at their disposal, which combine to form a large variety of strategies. For you, the game could easily be about finding the best strategies that win with the greatest ease, OR the game could be about trying to win with as little as possible.
Overall, the game's fun lies in its moderately competent AI, enemy variety, situation variety and massive room for different strategies and optimisation.

Great so far. I spent years trying to remember and re-experience this game, and I'm glad you've re-made it. It's lacking the story charm from the original, but I'm fine with the gameplay.
Also, there's a bug. If you click the searchbar for programs during a battle, you can't click out of it.
Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.

I missed out on Spybotics, apparently the game this is based on. For the others who are coming to this game without that background, I would describe this as a turn-based, tactical, digital board-game with a hacking theme. You play as a hacker controlling 1-6, usually 4, programs with ranged, melee, buff, debuff, and other abilities that change the board or teleport programs around the board. Your objective is either to eradicate the other programs or to get one of your programs to a key.
Missions can take several attempts as you puzzle out a winning combination and sequence of moves.
I've spent over ten hours going through the first campaign and it looks like the second campaign has just as much content. In addition to that, the game includes a level editor for you to setup your own scenarios.
If you're on linux, you can get it from canonical's snap store for free. That being said, I think whats on offer is worth the full $10USD.
A couple of things I wished for while playing the game:
- A turn tracker or initiative indicator for which program goes first. Right now you just need to remember. This is mostly fine, but it would be nice to have the option.
- A setting menu to change or view the key bindings.

Growing up, I always was in awe while watching Hollywood interpretations of computer hacking- a digital battle of experience and wits. NIGHTFALL HACKER encourages players to use their brains to outsmart other malicious programs in order to obtain different information or accesses which clients are willing to pay for.
NIGHTFALL HACKER is a surprisingly addictive turn-based strategy game that plays like a combination of chess and Mega Man Battle Network. Developed and published by Teradile, NIGHTFALL HACKER lets players learn, strategize, and collect dozens of different programs to hack their way through a campaign full of different odd hacking jobs.
NIGHTFALL HACKER is actually inspired by and pays homage to an online LEGO game published in 2002 called, SPYBOTICS: The Nightfall Incident, which plays nearly the same. The core gameplay consists of utilizing your programs in unexpected ways to wipe out all enemy programs or solve the level.
Each program has a different maximum level of health, mobility speed, attack range, damage output, or utility support function to create your own way of outsmarting the enemy. In this game, health equates to size. The more health a program has the more space it takes up, which can be strategically used to block enemy programs from moving but can also accidentally trap your other programs from moving as well. Health is regenerated by moving to empty spaces, so you can regain as much health as your program’s mobility speed and max size (health) allows for.
The first half of the campaign is very quick and easy, this allows for players to get a feel for the game and learn how the game is played as they progress through it. The second half of the campaign is where levels start to get complicated and your brain will need to start strategizing; it will take some time to master the game. Another great feature about this game is that as long as you have not ended your turn, you have the option of undoing your actions up until the beginning of your turn. The undo feature can save you if you accidentally hurt yourself, misclick, or think of a better strategy halfway through your turn.
Besides the main campaign which has a decent plot, there is a second campaign with no plot that features the battles from The Nightfall Incident, which fans of the original might really appreciate and doubles as even more levels to complete. Alongside that, there is also a custom map creation mode which is perfect for testing out programs as well as strategies. You can even import/export levels to share around online or with friends.
The game has over 13 different electronic, dark ambient soundtracks which perfectly fit the style and aesthetic of this game. It was ambient, droning, and suspenseful at times- like the internet! The graphics are clean but much older looking, this being a game about hacking and battling programs, I found it quite charming. However, it would be an improvement to see some more animations and more interesting looking user interfaces.
NIGHTFALL HACKER is a simple yet addictive strategy game that offers more than 100 levels to get through. One can easily spend hours getting wrapped up into the game once you start understanding how to play. For what it is, this is a decent single player game that fans of strategy games would have a great time playing and mastering. One huge aspect that could make this game better is the inclusion of online player-vs-player gameplay. If you have ever wanted to feel like a romanticized hacker busting malicious programs online, NIGHTFALL HACKER has you covered.
Having enjoyed SPYBOTICS: THE NIGHTFALL INCIDENT, I was very much looking forward to Nightfall Hacker. Developed and published by Teradile, Nightfall Hacker is an interesting turned-based hackathon game.
The game encourages you to plan, hack and fight your way against rogue softwares. The game progresses through multiple levels and sub-levels as you crack down on countless malicious software, virus, and all sorts of nasty digital buggers.
Plot: A freelance White hat hacker is on the first day of his job, accepting paid ethical hacking and cybersecurity consultant jobs. On the first day on the job the owner of the server, a farm owner, lets him go for a warm-up run on his SSH server.
Having eliminated all the issues, our protagonist is all fueled up for more and more intense cyber challenges.
Gameplay: Nightfall Hacker is one of those easy-to-learn, hard-to-master kind of deals, where the game seemingly starts off easy, but as you progress things get very interesting.
The gameplay is very simple and only uses your left mouse button and the full cell power of your brain.
The game lets you counter malicious programs with your own trusty anti-malware programs. In the beginning, you will only be using two basic programs – 1. Hack, a basic attack program, and 2. Sling Shot, a basic range-based attack program.
As you progress you will be unlocking more and more anti-malware programs and you will be able to upgrade them using the money you're earning via your freelance contracts.
The game plays like a game of chess and your main goal is to slowly but surely cut down all the malware as you discover them by using your own programs.
Simply select the program you would like to start your attack with and place your first move. And since this game feels and plays out like a game of chess, it’s advisable to be careful and plan your attacks. Sometimes not being aggressive is the key to victory.
Cut down the movement and spread of the malware, eventually cornering and destroying it. But some malware may prove stronger than others and you may need to fallback, upgrade and go for another run.
Game design: The game seemingly went for a classic early 2000-ish UI look. I found it rather charming in its own way but it played out quite sluggishly.
Could definitely be improved with more polishing; the overall in-game UI, visuals, and animations felt very much unfinished.
Music and sound effects: Nothing really special here to grab your attention or boost your experience while playing, but there is also nothing to complain about.
Positives:
+ Decent minor plot
+ Enjoyable turned-based hacking game
+ Interesting gameplay and game element ideas
+ Classic early 2000ish rough UI design
+ Level editor
+ Includes the gameplay from The Nightfall Incident
Negatives:
- Needs overall improvement
- Needs more visual attraction when it comes to UI and animations
- Needs a better tutorial with more examples and explanation
Sharpen your white hat hacking skills against countless malicious programs and win the reputation you deserve.
6/10

Very fun! A faithful recreation of The Nightfall Incident, but I'm glad the game goes the extra mile and includes new maps and units as well. I particularly liked the new Architect, Zombie, and Trojan Horse units

I loved Spybotics: The Nightfall Incident flash game from back in the day and this is a pretty solid remake. All the programs are there plus there are some new ones too which add their own interesting mechanics and twists.
Now it does lack the cyberpunk aesthetic that the original had, but if you enjoyed the gameplay of The Nightfall Incident you should enjoy this one as well.
There are a few minor differences mechanically, they're not necessarily bad but they did surprise me a little bit.
First your programs can now attack allies and themselves, I actually prefer this to the original however just be careful where you click.
Second the Bit Man program can't add or remove tiles that contain a program square.
Third the pathing that the AI uses is a little different, it's not a big deal and honestly I'm not sure if most people would even notice
Now while I prefer the original for music, sound, story and aesthetics there are things that Nightfall Hacker adds that more than make up for it.
It has a level editor
You can control programs from the keyboard. WASD to move numbers to select an attack. This in and of itself is a pretty big QoL improvement. A suggestion here for the devs if they read this, make space bar select the next available program and if possible make keys re-bindable
All the new programs that are added, they add a nice extra layer of strategy. Some are just upgraded versions of old programs but others have new unique mechanics.
Overall it's got the same gameplay but enough new and extra things to make it shine above the original.

Great turn based strategy game. There are lots of unique units. There are many challenging levels. It's single player but would make an excellent vs game.
