First of all, if you want to buy this to get first game's sequel, you will leave with a bitter taste in your mouth. They are similar in spirit but not at it's core gameplay. There are references to the previous title but world map and mechanics are not similar.

What's great about this game is most definitely it's combat - it's fun and challenging with many ways to win a battle. Story is good, world map is excellent and pimp-my-kingdom was a great addition as well - cuts out grind for items. Skirmish battles also give a new rabbit hole to fall down into.

On the downside it falls victim to plague suffered by many RPGs - need to get players to spend 60+ hours. That means that there are 90% cookie cutter dungeons and 10% cool ones. Traveling in dungeons is slow because they are just too big.

Audio also takes a backseat on this, compared to it's precursor - voice acting is rare and music is sometimes completely off to their environment (especially on Broadleaf).

Side content was good but again, too much. I would have liked Trails in the sky approach with <10 sidequests per chapter than padding the game with bunch of fetch quests.

Overall, good game. Definitely worth when it's on sale.

+++ Feel-good, sugar-filled fairytale adventure.
+++ Adorable art direction.
+++ Carefree, casual fun most of the time.

--- Imprecise combat mechanics.
--- Frustrating, directionless hardcore DLC.

A purchase of this one will yield enough content to keep one busy for 60 hours. While it's not the most innovative game of the century, it still provides a good chunk of entertainment that checks most of the boxes, entertains a few creature comforts, and allows one to sit back and enjoy some escapism without counting the time. For best results, stick to the base game, and avoid the DLC, as the latter attempts to push the game mechanics to the limit - but the mechanics were not meant for such an extreme exercise.

Overall, I enjoyed this game quite a bit. But, there's a few caveats to it, especially if you're familiar with the first Ni No Kuni game.

The biggest difference between the games: The first game plays like a Studio Ghibli story with elements of a JRPG. The second game plays like a JRPG with elements of a Studio Ghibli movie. You'll notice that right away, the emphasis on gameplay and stats and equipment rather than on characters, world-building, and magic book consulting.

It's also got elements of city management, which is good and bad. Good because it's a fun little hobby to get into and contains lots of useful research and production. Bad because it's time-consuming, and you'll probably need to leave the game running for hours at a time just to grind up the building/research fuel known as kingsguilders.

Again, I liked this game overall. It's a big departure from the first game, and that's okay. It's still a fun game with some pretty cool designs, decent combat, and plenty to do both during the main story and post-game.

2022 - This game has so much more to offer than you can perceive from the videos and reviews. There's crafting, there's lot's of fighting, city management, tons of side quests, companions, a tactical mini-game, exp grinding for end game content, it's awesome, I had it on my wish list for a long time. It's been a while since a game caught me this way, playing it non stop when I can, thinking how can I improve the dmg output to kill a difficult mob or progress in end game. I would say it's full price is a little high but worth it. If it's on SALE TOTALLY WORTH IT.

I think that the story is the most important element of any RPG. The gameplay of NNK2 was well polished and the kingdom building sidequest was enjoyable. However, the story was a mess because it moved to quickly. You don't get to care about the characters because they were not developed well. And there was also this lack of voice acting. They even introduced a discount Drippy, and yet we don't even get to hear him that much. You will be severely disappointed if you played NNK Wrath of the White Witch first.

“One can assess a prince’s intelligence by looking at the men with whom he surrounds himself.”
~Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince

Ah, Level-5... If you're a part of PlayStation family, you sure know 'em. The guys brought us Dark Cloud, Rogue Galaxy, Jeanne d'Arc (which is still my most favorite PSP game out there), and many other niche titles. Most of us, though, know them by three names: Dragon Quest VIII (which brought legendary series back to spotlight in 2004), Professor Layton (which quickly became their most famous franchise) and, of course, Ni No Kuni. Which is fun, because, let's be honest, Ni No Kuni wasn't that good.

Ni No Kuni was originally released as a Nintendo DS title, but most of us know it by its 2011 remake for PlayStation 3 (which was later re-released for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Steam). And, as I said, it was pretty mediocre title. Post-DS Ni No Kuni that dropped touch controls, was pretty much yet another Level-5 game. With some interesting ideas, but very annoying and uncomfortable mechanics that were far from being satisfying. So... what was all the fuss about? The thing about Ni No Kuni was the fact that its cutscenes were produced by Studio Ghibli. Yes, the Studio Ghibli. The one that created the most iconic animated movies in Japanese history. From My Neighbor Totoro to Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. That exact Studio Ghibli was involved in video game development and it sure added a lot to Ni No Kuni's atmosphere.

So, when they've announced the sequel, I... was far from being excited. Not only Studio Ghibli wasn't involved anymore, we were told that Ni No Kuni II won't have any 2D cutscenes at all, while when it's about the gameplay... let's just say I was never a big fan Level-5. As long as it's not about Professor and Jeanne, of course. In other words, I didn't expect much here. Even though again, the game got extremely positive reviews. One way or another, I've decided to wait for a good discount and even after purchasing the game, I still hesitated. But finally, I decided to give it a try a-a-and... let's... just say things here are not as good as the press claimed.

First of all, Ni No Kuni II doesn't feel much like the original. In other words, the game doesn't look like one of those brilliant animated movies we all know and love. Yes, we've all expected exactly that, but still, it's hard not to mention that that signature atmosphere of Studio Ghibli works is not here anymore. Which doesn't mean that this game doesn't feel magical, though. Level-5 always had their own signature visual style. The one we've been seeing since their very first title (Dark Cloud). You know the drill. Dark Cloud, Dragon Quest VIII, Jeanne d'Arc, Inazuma Eleven... the guys just love their cell shading. And Ni No Kuni II? It looks totally fine. It has that certain Level-5 atmosphere, cell shading is nicely done and makes the game to look very anime-like (remember the latest installments in Arc System Works' Guilty Gear series?) and so on. Like I said, fully 3D approach didn't ruin the game.

Unfortunately, the story kinda did. The first couple of chapters feels pretty solid and comes with a lot of juicy voice acting, but right after that... the story becomes painfully generic. It's like Level-5 didn't even try here. They literally did what they usually do and called it a day. Here's out cat kingdom, here's our mouse kingdom, here's our sea kingdom and here's our mechanical kingdom. With its annoying platform puzzles from Rogue Galaxy. But I'll return to that later. Anyway, our new hero is a little king who, with a help from a president from another world should establish his own kingdom. You know the drill. We'll be going from one town to another, do quests and fight bosses in order to make allies. That's pretty much it. Generic villain with the sad past included. Sure, there's a very nice moral in this story, the one our world desperately needs nowadays, but unfortunately, it's just that. A moral. While the story itself? It's just you, bosses and villain who'll appear from time to time and end up telling you how sad he is at the end of the game. Boring!

But enough about the story. What's about the game itself? Again, it'll look promising at the beginning. It begins as a basic yet cute action RPG with nothing really special. You switch between characters, you use skills, you level up and so on. You know how it is in Asian ARPGs. Soon after you'll finish the tutorial dungeon, you'll unlock our usual JRPG-like open world (generic ship and flying vessel included) and... it's hard not to notice how small the world in Ni No Kuni II is. There are only four kingdoms here and the actual world is akin to what we had in those early JRPGs on the NES. Like, you know, the very first Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. It's that small. Pretty empty too. A couple of dungeons here, some powerful monsters there... that's pretty much it. So... what will we do for at least 40+ hours this game wants us to waste on it? Well... I hate to say that, but we'll grind. Because Ni No Kuni II? It's all about grinding.

See, it's yet another one of those Level-5 games, in which we'll build our own city. Like you know, Dark Cloud and White Knight Chronicles. Suikoden fans would not be impressed here, and yet, it's the best thing we've seen in Level-5's games. The problem is – the city in this game feels a lot like something from those nasty f2p games on mobiles. No, you won't need to pay real money for anything here, but still “wait or pay” mechanics are here and pretty much everything in this game requires you to grind for certain items (NPC's would ask you for those in order to join your kingdom, you'll need those to research new magic / skills and so on, the list is pretty long). In other words, this game is a grindfest. Remember how annoying and confusing items-oriented skill system from Rogue Galaxy felt? That's pretty much it. Except now you'll waste hours on grinding instead of reading guides.

Finally, there are tactical battles. Technically, those are pretty neat and provide you with totally different kind of gameplay, but the truth is... those are just (very) basic Pikmin rip-off. Yes, we're controlling the little king... who leads the armies... in Pikmin style. Yes, it's a bloody Little King's Story wannabe. And yes, Little King's Story is a million times better than tactical battles in this game. That's just the thing about Ni No Kuni II. Press made it look like a fresh and groundbreaking experience, but the truth is – it's a pretty typical Level-5 game with copy/pasted mechanics from the older games. City building from Dark Cloud, item-based skill system and annoying level design from Rogue Galaxy, tactical battles from Pikmin... And while nothing of that feels especially bad, it's far from feeling especially good either.

So, should you give it a chance? It depends. You liked previous Level-5 titles and don't mind hours of slow and uninspired grinding? You may as well go for this one. It's a well-made product, which can give you up to 150 hours of gameplay. But if you hate wasting more time on grinding than on the real deal and didn't really like the annoying aftertaste Level-5's games usually have? I'd say don't bother. In other words, Ni No Kuni II isn't really bad. But it's far from being a game for everybody. Dixi.

An adorable JRPG with plenty of things to do. You can spend tons of time just upgrading your party's gear & abilities, and investing/managing your kingdom. I beat the story with 50 hours played, but there were still many side missions and other things to finish. The story and characters are average for the genre. But the gameplay is really fun and addicting.

What truly stands out here is the phenomenal soundtrack and overall style of the world. The music and animation teams include people that are well known for contributions to many Studio Ghibli projects. At times, I genuinely felt like I was just playing a Ghibli JRPG. So if that excites you at all, you need to pick this up.

I have delayed writing this review for a long time and simply put, I am extremely torn about this game. While there are several elements of this game which makes it charming, I ultimately could not finish this game for one major reason: Too many game mechanics.

I'm not going to go into a breakdown of pros and cons, because I enjoyed the pacing and the cinematics, but ultimately, what stopped me from playing were two things: Siege Combat and Kingdom Management.

I don't enjoy the Siege Combat gameplay. It is slow, clunky and a lot of the time outside your immediate control when they are battling. It would be great if it was a side mode where completing sieges rewards you with materials for crafting, but when it is forced into the story progression, it ruins the rest of the game. I enjoy the normal arena styled, action combat. While that can also become repetitive, the bosses were somewhat enjoyable. The sieges are what ultimately stopped me from playing any further when I was hit with a roadblock and cannot continue the story further without going back and upgrading my units through more sieges. It is an unnecessary addition to the game.

The Kingdom Management felt more like a chore than a blessing. It felt like I was operating a mobile game at times, having to continuously come back and check if my upgrades have made any progress for me to get better weapons, armour or spells. All of which are fine, but it became a system of explore one area, check on kingdom, explore the next area, check kingdom. I understand I don't have to always come back and check, but if the system is there, and there are benefits to aid your combat and equipment, there is more incentive to keep checking. Eventually, it becomes a chore and halts gameplay.

Other than those two major issues on my part, the rest of the game is fine. I cannot recommend this game because while it starts strong, the middle and endgame starts to rip your time apart in tiny pieces where you cannot reasonably enjoy them all. I really hope I never have to see the Siege mechanic ever again.

How do I begin? A young King abandoned and betrayed. Left to fend for himself in a dangerous and perilous world. The encounters, adventures, the struggles. There's beauty in the struggle and ugliness in the success. So much content, with so much to do. A fast and magical world that never ceases to amaze and put my mind an heart in aww. The battle system, the beautiful animation, and the crew that helps me along the way are amazing. The dialogue, scenes, the emotion, it's all there. The first time I've been able to be in control of my own anime adventure. Ni No Kuni 2 is what I needed and it's a highly recommended for me. It may seem difficult but it's a learning curve. I did not buy the DLC or extra content. Just got a little too grindy for my tastes. Still an epic buy, an epic experience, just absolutely perfect.

Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom is my first foray into modern JRPGs ever since I stopped playing them back in 2nd and 3rd console generation days. I have long have found out that Japanese RPG developers are getting lazy and complacent, not wanting to improve and make leaps on the different aspects thats found in JRPGS. I jumped into this game hoping it will change my mind and prove me wrong.

Ni No Kuni 2 is not a bad game, in fact it is a fairly decent one. But it is a terrible “RPG” with its potential being bogged down by the archaic “JRPG” way of developing role-playing games.

It has the most glaring flaws and outdated mechanics in JRPGs that annoys me to hell such as

1. Inconsistent voice-acting - some cutscenes has voice-acting, some has incredible bad voice-acting, and 80% of the time they don’t have voice-acting where texts appear and the characters just single word phrases such as “Eh?” “What!” “Hehe”.

2. No visual loot, the loot you get in this game is decent. But again, because of these lazy and uninspired Japanese developers. It does not change the appearance of your character. So whats the point of it other than looking at numbers go up. People bash The Avenger’s for this but JRPGs have done this more than they should and nobody bats an eye.

3. Archaic game design - No autosave, no saving when you want in dungeons. “Battle Arena” style combat, “open-world” traversal mechanic that was found back in the early 2000s.

4. No choices to be made in the game to affect outcomes, RPG?????

Some WRPGs studios don’t get close to the budget these huge Japanese corporation have at their disposal but every WRPG I play have modern, fresh and streamlined RPG mechanics, in addition to FULL voice-acting and branching paths.

Ni No Kuni 2 could be a great game, if it was released from the chains of being “JRPGs”, same goes to 90% of all modern JRPGs out there. It is a 5/10 from me.

Could have been great if these lazy Japanese developers actually put effort into their RPGs again, instead of trying to create ways to nickle and dime their playerbase with copious amounts of DLC and editions.

How should I put this, ummm...
The game itself is great, it has tons of content, amazing music, stunning graphic, Ghibli artsyle, smooth gameplay, good voice acting, etc.

However, it was difficult for me to finish this game. I personally found this game was so boring. It felt... lifeless. I had no motivation to continue (I did force myself to finish the game anyway).

And this is the reason why I'm not into this game :
- The storyline is weak, it makes me feel like this game was designed for 6 year old children.

- The game lacks of voice acting, only the main story cutscenes have actual voice acting.

- The side quest are repetitive (typical MMO side quests)

- The pacing is really slow

- The characters are plain, they just feel like generic anime heroes. Barely any character development.

In short, this game is beautiful on the outside, and feels so bland on the inside

Good game to waste some time with. Unfortunately, combat is not challenging at all but it looks good.

Got it for $12.50, so I’m happy with losing a 100 hrs of my life for that ????

tl;dr The game definitely has flaws, but I still enjoyed it so I give it a weak recommendation. Skip it unless you're already into JRPGs and are okay with level grinding (which to be fair isn't uncommon in JRPGs).

The biggest flaw in my opinion is that it can feel quite grindy at times, and the large number of repeat re-skinned monsters does not help. I played on expert and hard difficulty primarily because normal felt too easy but the difficulty scaling doesn't feel great. On expert most enemies get huge HP bars and significantly increased damage (to the point that certain enemies will one shot you unless you're > 10 levels higher). Hard difficulty did the same scaling but to a lower degree, so it was a decent middle ground albeit not perfect. The result is that you either have battles with no challenge or deal with bullet sponge enemies (to an extent) and/or need to heavily rely on ranged attacks: which are effective but slow and unsatisfying (since you can cheese most enemies that way).

The story was enjoyable but not that memorable, and I thought it left a lot of plot questions open in the end (even with the DLC which added to some characters' backstories). I would say the DLC with the Conductor (postgame content given the levels required) was definitely one of the parts that stood out most story-wise even though it was not a ton of story content.

The music and graphics were both similarly good but nothing groundbreaking.

All in all there is quite a bit of content and a nice mix of different gameplay mechanics (castle building, army battles, etc.) which I found entertaining enough to get almost all the achievements. The only ones I skipped required doing > 25 runs of timed monster rush like battles which I did not find fun.

Adorable game. Cute story. You're playing as a king trying to built his own peaceful country. You do this while exploring the lands finding people to help and join your kingdom. You'll be followed by adorable little creatures that you unlock by helping them, and they will help you out during fights! You'll level up your party's characters by gaining xp from slaying enemies and you can change the skills and weapons. Back at your kingdom you assign people to tasks and make them do researches to gain new skills etc.

There's a fair amount of things to do in the game and they'll guide you through it all. Nice game, and I love the art style.

I've now beaten the main game and think I can write a reasonable review. This is a fun, slightly-overly-long, action RPG with a story that unfortunately falls just over the line of childish rather than childlike. Some of the other reviews, I'm sure, mention the negatives, such as dumb AI companions, etc., which are true. Other issues I had were several parts of the game with massive difficulty jumps that require significant grinding (or, I discovered much later, grinding the rare mythic enemies for EXP).

To alleviate the need for grinding, I recommend starting the game on the hardest difficulty and then lowering the difficulty by one notch at a couple of obvious stages (you'll know, because the regular mobs can all one-hit you after certain points). If you do it like this you're go from hardest > hard > normal for the final boss without having to do any significant grinding. If you like the grind, feel free to keep it on hardest. The game is otherwise too easy on normal.

The big army fights are dull rock-paper-scissors affairs.

One note: DO go after the corrupted/legendary enemies. In some games (FF12!), pursuing side bosses over-levels you and ruins the rest of the game. Not here. Also, make sure you keep up with your kingdom management (which is fun if a little less in depth than I was expecting).

In closing, I got this game on sale and think it was definitely worth what I paid. I bought the DLC but will probably not take the time to play it.

Beautiful graphics and ost, but a very weak story and a lack of voice acting even for a JRPG. Like 95% of the game is just reading, even important scenes don't get voice acted, and the dlcs have zero voice acting. Combat is decent but nothing special, kind of like a simplified version of the Tales of series.

Overall a pretty fun game, and don't get the dlcs unless u like grinding.

Whew! What a ride. 110 hours in and I've finally finished this game. And it's just the base game without any of the DLCs. And what an experience it was. I love games with good stories and this game has it in spades. I should've prefaced by saying that NNK2 is my first JRPG experience, and I'm glad that it was. If anybody wants to dabble in the genre of JRPG, personally I would recommend to start with this game. Will miss the beautiful world the people at LEVEL-5 have created. The only complaint I will have is that the game should've had a New Game+ mechanic, to experience with NPCs after the story ends. But I hear a DLC tells post-story kinda. Maybe I'll look into it. To anyone reading my humble review: Highly recommended. 10 out of 10.

Ni No Kuni 2: Reverent Kingdom is a massive, sprawling ARPG that while having repetitive quests, simplified combat and story more aimed at younger players offers plenty of things to do to keep you playing if you’re willing to invest the time and effort. Its cell shaded animation looks amazing, and I recommend it if you don’t mind grinding and can live with its overly cheerful cast of characters.

Story
The games lore and setting are very expansive, and it goes into great effort to explain the setting and focuses on the conflicts between the different anthropomorphic races. NK2 is set on parallel world linked to ours, where the feelings of one world influence the other and everyone has a counterpart which is linked to them. Larger kingdoms are run by rulers who have been chosen by Kingmakers, mythical creatures who make the applicants take tests to prove their ability to rule. Weak rulers ultimately cause the bond to disappear, causing the Kingmaker to transform into a realm wrecker to destroys the kingdom (and everyone in it), before awaiting the next person to rise who can pass the tests. You start off playing as Roland (President of a country that looks a lot like the USA) who is summoned to King Evans world (his bedroom in fact) just as a nuke is dropped on the city he was visiting, killing him, his family and everyone else. King Evan (a Grimalkin - cat human half breed) has just had a coup against him by the mice, led by his late fathers trusted advisor Mausinger. The game follows the party’s quest to create a new kingdom where everyone can live in peace (and put past issues aside), and expand that peace to the world so no-one has to experience that kind of pain again. The plot and most resolutions to events are overly simplistic, but I would have no reservations in recommending this to those playing with a much younger audience. Evan comes across as over naive (blindly accepting anything that’s asked of him even when he’s king), but it’s the type of cheery answer a child would come up with and fits the setting.

Gameplay
Gameplay is heavily focused on forging relationships and bringing people together, and majority of the game is focused on this task. It takes a long time to get into the game proper (the tutorial really ends at chapter 5 after about 10 hours of gameplay). Saving the world takes a back seat to building up your kingdom, and this is the primary driver to all the side quests you are given. You could skip these, but you are penalised by not doing them (by virtue of not being able to perform research), and the games enemies do have big increases in levels between areas (you will be forced to either grind levels or do the side quests for exp). A large amount of in game time will be spent performing countless fetch quests, but the trade-off is the new skills, abilities and items you unlock back at your castle. Other than the castle building and side quests, there are skirmish battle to perform, where you take control of 4 units made up of townsfolk you have recruited that rotate around Evan, and have a rock, paper, scissors relationship to enemy units. These are broken down into defend missions (just have to survive waves on enemies), or attacking missions, where it’s more a test of unit, ability and resource management. There’s also Tainted monsters to kill (which act as super powered versions of regular enemies) to kill, and tons of collectables to find.

Each of the 6 characters you recruit (only 3 allowed in each battle) overlap abilities, to a degree the magic they learn and weapons they can equip, and fall into quick/weak, average or slow and strong attacks, though they are all highly customisable. Both ranged and melee weapons are locked to character sets (skills are unique to each character and each character usually have 2 element magic types that can be unlocked), but everything else is editable and be equipped on anyone. All of the primary game is heavily dependent on your level, as weak enemies wont attack you if your higher levelled, and you are penalised significantly in dmg if you are under levelled. The DLC’s add new mechanisms to the game that I really wish were available throughout, and change the focus to correct unitisation of equipment (high levels are not as important), perfecting dodging to counter attack, and item usage and makes combat much more interesting and fun to do.

Combat is in real time (think Secret of Mana), but quite one-dimensional unless playing on expert where it can become quite complex in equipping the right gear to maximise damage (DLCs really expand on this point). Battles happen in a small circular arena and you only have a few options to attack, with there being both light and heavy attacks, blocking and evading, and using your ranged attack or skills/magic. All of these options are heavily customisable, and if you use the tactics tweaker you can edit resistance levels, extra damage vs enemy types and rewards. You gain levels very slowly unless you change the rewards types given, but the DLC content fixes this. Most times you can just plough through enemies with heavy attacks (both enemy and ally AI isn’t particularly smart), as only bigger enemies and bosses require any strategy as they have multiple rounds of combat. Each enemy usually has a very easy to read telegraphed attack that can be dodged or blocked once you know the patterns.

The crafting system is a core component of the game, and while it plays a small part overall you are constantly collecting items from monster drops and lose objects in dungeons to craft better weapons/armour, magic spells and Higgledies (elemental spirits). Other than the very best objects in the game everything can be produced in your city on a random time basis, as long as you have built the required buildings and staffed them, again focusing your attention on the side quests.

Graphics
The cell shaded animation and graphics for NNK2 is excellent, with all characters having a wide range of different animations for movement, attacking and skills. Even though Studio Ghibli didn’t animate this, the entire world looks amazing, as do the cut scenes though some environments do start to become repetitive later on in the DLCs. The characters only display their unique clothes (not equipped armours), though all the weapons are displayed in battle. This somewhat carries over to the enemies, many who are different coloured reskins. I did have some issues with the game resizing to 1080P when starting instead of using the native 4K monitor resolution, but its quickly fixed from the settings menu.

Music
The music and sound effects were in my option the weakest part of the game. The music throughout the game was outstanding, and was the voice acting during cut scenes. Regular dialogue in the game however and battles just repeats a few of the same lines for the characters talking, which comes across as lazy, and becomes annoying after you hear it for the 100th time. There is an option to listen to the in game music in town, but you have to find the music sheets first.

DLC
All of the DLC’s are set before the final battle takes place, but likely won’t be started before you have finished the game at least once as they are end game content. They all introduce new gameplay mechanisms that are well worth the investment (and some seriously powerful equipment), however the repetitive dungeons can get boring and the story content is more focused on resolving outstanding issues for the primary characters than adding anything new.

Achievements
If you are chasing 100% achievements then it’s easy enough to do, but requires a hefty time investment and a good amount of grinding. The hardest parts will be getting S ranks in the DLC combat trials (time based fights), as they require certain equipment load outs to be effective.

I just finished the game and it's by far one of my all time favorite JRPGs. I have a tendency to get bored of the repetitive grinding as much as I love these kind of games but with this game, there's so much to do. From NUMEROUS side quests, errands, tactical skirmishes, dreamer doors, tainted monsters, and kingdom management, there's a lot to do to boost your characters and gain XP. The world is very vast and pretty and all the places and NPCs are pretty memorable. I even found myself enjoying a lot of the stories in the side quests.

It wouldn't be fair to not also put the cons in this game but if you have experience playing JRPGs, then you for sure will need to play this on hard because you get some really great loot and the overall if you're looking for a challenging JRPG, this isn't it (except for the last boss on hard hits like a mf truck if you below lvl 60). I also never really felt too attached or really cared about the characters along the way. A lot of times, they have a story quest that tells you a bit about them and the place they come from and then they just kinda hang around in your party. I just feel like they could've interwoven some of the other playable characters' storylines.

Overall, amazing and very pretty game!

Look, I have no qualms regarding the soundtrack, combat system and graphic wise. It is totally top notch. What I'm dissapointed with is the game story and character background story. This is my no 1 complain. The motivation for the protagonist to build a country is laughable. After certain event, we jump right into trying to build a country. So yeah, this game is playable. but i don't think it would suit certain players who played the first game where the story was amazing.

My feelings for this game are mixed. I haven't played the first one, but they're detached from eachother so I feel I can write this review. Would I recommend it? If you know of Level 5's previous games, yes. If not? I'm not sure.

Story is fairly simple. It feels like a ghibli film, but a lot more gaps between story beats due to you controlling it. The chapter with the first kingdom you recruit feels longer and proper length since it's the tutorial, but every kingdom after feels fairly rushed in comparison. Note: I haven't beaten it yet.

Gameplay is a mixed bag. The Real Time Combat is fun, but the tactics tweaker is all but useless in some aspects. Will touch on this later. The other gameplay styles really bog the game down; The kingdom gameplay is basically an idle game, something to ready while you do grinding (I feared and hoped it'd become similar to the Dark Cloud games. Feared for DC2, hoped for DC1), and the army combat is so uninteresting, despite sharing similarities with another one of level 5's properties. The combat starts out fun; lots of flashy moves to keep you entertained at first, but once you realize your party members are very mindless, avoiding most strategies in lough of face mashing, they'll die and you'll waste your limited party revives so you have targets for the monsters to focus on (note: only an issue with large, single enemies like bosses or walls of meat larger enemies.). Their might be a solution in the gear upgrading mechanic, but I don't want to waste money and resources to find out.

To me, the biggest hit is that the game tracks all these useless numbers (pebbles picked up? steps taken??) and tracks kingdom dwellers and higgeldies, but it lacks a bestiary? The first game was about monster capturing, so I get why IT had one, but not this one? It's odd, as the tactics tweaker relies on you damaging certain enemy types, and some aren't noticeable at a glance. This to me was an oddly poor decision on the game's part; even odder considering Level 5 made many games with a bestiary before hand, but I digress.

Finally, music and sounds; the music loops are surprisingly short and tonal shifting for the areas they're in. The overworld isn't bad, but you tell me the music in cloud coil canyon didn't match for half of the situation, sounding like the game was going to turn into a survival horror game. I'm just surprised, as this is supposedly handled by someone who does the music for Ghibli films... Best to give the music one loop and mute it for the rest of the loops. The rest of the soundscape gets repetitive; repeating voice lines and higgeldy cries.

Despite liking the game, I've dropped it, so despite my feelings, I'm going to not recommend it. It's not a bad game, it's just repetitive and bloated. All I can say is that it feels like a Level 5 game. Make of that what you will, I suppose.

It's a nice game, some parts of it are decent, other parts are awesome, and there's a few things that don't feel fully developed or coherent.

I really like the open world and there does seem to a decent amount of content.
There are also some really cool ideas like with the Kingdom system and I really enjoy skirmishes.
Building and managing a brand new kingdom, being able to recruit people to the Kingdom and having little cute elemental spirit-like creatures/Higgledies as friends is cool.

Combat is fun but a bit shallow at times and you can also easily over level some parts of the game.
Being low level you can easily get one shot or you can cheese some opponents by stun locking them with heavy attacks.
But Boss fights are awesome and the special effects look really cool.

I like the story but at the same time there hasn't really been any noticeable character development, or much effort to resolve conflict from a players perspective. So would rate the story as being somewhere between good and ok.

My main two complaints is that hard mode is easy and some of the dialogue doesn't have any voice acting, some non-voiced cut scenes are sometimes instantly followed by a voiced cut scene/cinematic.

Overall it's a fun above average game that has quite a bit of charm to it.

TL;DR

A nice JRPG with a lot of charm, but lacking polish and a coherent narrative. Every good thing is half-baked, but the longer you play, the more the bad stuff catches up.

The Elephant in the Room

Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom is still being made by Level 5, but Ghibli was not involved in any kind of way anymore. This means that a lot of the magic was lost in comparison and if I had to compare this game with something I already knew:
The Tales of series comes really close, even the battle system is somewhat similar. This makes Ni No Kuni 2 a lot more generic and takes away from the identity that the first game had. Despite sounding harsh I want to stress that Ni No Kuni 2 is still really presentable and feels more like a Dragon Quest game that captures you with it’s vibrant world, goofy characters and stories, making it a lot more traditional.

The Gameplay – A Double-Edged Sword

First thing: The character you can see jumping and shooting arrows at that sandworm is the fastest character in the game and this is the most speed you can possibly achieve. NNK2 is a lot slower than that and feels like Dark Souls 2, but exchanging stamina with special moves.
Most of the time even being pretty low leveled you can oneshot simple enemies or spam MP restoring items for the bigger fights. This game will not challenge you on Normal or Hard. On expert it actually gets harder as enemies will become bullet sponges and start oneshotting your AI controlled party members. Combined with poor enemy attack telegraphing and strange hitboxes (DS2 sends it’s regards) the game becomes a slog (a word I learned from this game).
When it works and you fight the “world bosses”, the game gets it’s shit together and showcases what it can do. Such moments are glorious.
But these kind of fights are drowned by the quantity of boring and color-palette swapped enemies.
I don’t think the gameplay is bad, but unfinished like most of the game.

The Kingdom

An underwhelming feature with some cool ideas. In short you build a kingdom that gives you resources and then reinvest a currency that serves not really much of a purpose beyond using it for developing your kingdom. Recruiting people for it works by doing fetch quests and I mean like a lot of them. It is relaxing and a perfect background activity. But if you hate grinding: Stay away from this game. Otherwise it will rip you apart. Cool idea that fell somewhat flat.

Story

DEAR LORD WHAT DID THEY DO
The beginning of the game till the second major story arc is pure magic and really interesting. The characters, design and world just get together and the opening to this game is probably the most outstanding thing I have seen in a while.
Then it becomes an episodic story with an overarching plot. The episodes themselves differentiating in quality with some genuine and heartwarming moments in a sea of nothingness.
No character development, an underutilized cast and just the feeling like I missed a big chunk of the story is what stayed with me. Although I liked the MCs I could not connect with them as they had no moments beyond some cool, but too short interactions.
If I had seen more, I would be praising instead of criticizing.

Graphics

Really impressive. The attention to detail is outstanding and sometimes I just walked through cities to look at what they could offer. The creativity for the world is only limited by some conventions, yet Level 5 managed to have a creative spin on many of them.
If you are walking through that though. A world map exists and it is just poor 3D-renders of the characters that walk on blandness.

The Bad – A Small Selection

1. Everything is tedious. I try to level up my spells, 6 seconds animation every time (you are going to do this around 90 times, this means 10 minutes just to level up your spells, even if you have all the resources). The same goes for higgledy. The same goes for weapons, armor, accessoires, trading pebbles, investing in your kingdom and even more. This is beyond sanity and I can’t wrap my head around how anyone in play-testing did not find that.
2. The music is alright at best and gets repetitive really fast.
3. Any kind of personal investment into the story will be unrewarded.
4. The ties to the first game are superficial at best and only really few ideas remain. Anyone wanting good ties will be disappointed.
5. Achievements are DLC-related. Without the Season Pass you can not reach 100%.
6. Most dialogue has no voice-acting and the same 10 audio samples will be repeated again and again. Knickers.

Conclusion

It is an above average game that suffers from problems a below average game has. Level 5 should have worked on fundamentals first, but this is where the game falls apart. But if you are able to endure through these mistakes, something beautiful is to be found. Wish it could have realized it’s full potential.

If you're looking for a decent JRPG that's fairly polished and fun to play, this one's a safe bet to try. There are some issues with the combat and questionable story beats, but it is still enjoyable to play.

The combat is somewhat interesting, and the higher difficulties give a bit more challenge. It just takes some getting used to and doesn't feel as fluid as the dodge does not cancel animations, so you must time everything properly or use a lot of healing items.

Story has some charm but is sometimes strange in terms of actions and pacing. You may need to have a lot of suspension of disbelief.

There's also a variety of mechanics, such as army battles and city building, instanced and dungeon battling, and puzzles to keep you on your toes. It might not be your favorite parts of the game, but they are interesting and give you more to do.

The look and feel of the game is very polished, it's a shame what happened to NA Level 5. While the games they brought over weren't popular here, they always had a certain level of quality and many titles were yet to be localized. Hopefully this does not mean the end to Level 5 games coming to the west.

So, This is my first time with Ni No Kuni, and its pretty cool!
Here's what I got out of it.
Pros:
Beautiful visuals
Fun, entertaining cast
Neat story

Cons:
Far too easy
Equipment seems hollow as choices don't effect character model
Voice acting is very little, which is a bummer.

This is a fun little game, and has some cool moments. The puzzles are fantastic. Kingdom building reminds me of Keflings, sorta. I plan on completing it fully. Wish it was a bit deeper, however.

After 30 hours I have come to a boss fight that has a bug where I am stuck running around the boss area and no boss spawned as it is supposed to so I figured I will just reload an older save file and try again but once again I get stuck in the boss area unable to continue the game now. I researched this and it is a known bug you either get it to spawn or you have to reload another save and hope it works or restart the whole game. I am absolutely disgusted the devs released the game knowing about this issue which they still haven't fixed after nearly 3 years now. If you get this game good luck.

a lot of crashes and a lot of grinding because the bosses are intentionally always a few levels over the current mobs
also you need to upgrade your castle to continue the main quests so you are forced to do sidejobs to collect workers for your kingdom as the upgrade of the castle needs a certain amount of workers to be recruited but the sidejobs are boring so i didn´t really enjoy this game as the story wasn´t nearly as good as the first ni no kuni game i´m overall very disappointed but i can atleast say that the combat was better than in the first game

I was pleasantly surprised by this game. The story is nice, the game play is fun and varied with the standard JRPG elements, the kingdom building, and the skirmishes. I was amazed to get through the entire main quest of the base game and not experience a single bug! I didn't know anyone cared enough about quality to make a bug free game anymore. The visuals are nice if rather simple. There is nothing ground breaking about the game, but it is fun and well made and certainly worth trying.

Ultimately the game is bland and boring, the charm of the art style takes you only so far. Story got completely uninteresting after about one hour of game and I proceeded to skip as much as I could. There are very limited enemies that you face and most bosses are just bigger versions of those.

Game felt like it was intentionally wasting my time as much as it could. If you want a time sink go for it, otherwise I don't recommend it.

A long after (or maybe before) the events of Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, the young heir Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum is deposed in a coup and must flee for his life. In exile, he decides to create his own kingdom and to unite all the nations of the world

First Rundown

Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom is a classic open-world action JRPG transported into the contemporary era. An evolution (and eventually devolution) of the first game of the series. Set in a colourful world reminiscent of a Studio Ghibli film, there are a few carryovers and references to the first game, but overall, Ni no Kuni II feels like a brand new game. Different, out of the box, action-based, with a strong building management gameplay mechanics and a lot of flaws.

WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT WORKS

Zitat:

  • Story

◼️ Writing On the paper, it’s a journey of self-discovery and hard political choices, in reality, it’s rather a mishmash of substories, badly developed characters with superficial and predictable outcomes. Everything feels like something “seen” before, seems to me that'd leave you with nothing in the end. It’s a simple, childish story with a very bad developing, though there are enough fun situations and goofy premises to keep things entertaining. You don’t understand if the story is a prequel, a sequel or made up in an alternative timeline from the first one. The plot contains huge and heavy contradiction with the first game. The most interesting story of all is the one not told, why the world changed so much? What happened? Let’s say that this “brand” wants to follow the Final Fantasy path, different games, different worlds, different stories. ◼️ Characters and Dialogues The protagonist and the party heroes feel uninspired, dialogues are boring and empty of content. Think that the citizens you’ll recruit during the playtime have better substories than your party members, the game world is full of interesting side characters and hidden substories to discover.
  • Gameplay

  • ◼️ How it plays The combat system got a total makeover. No longer will you have to try to sort through menus or manage a party full of AIs who love blowing all of their magic at the worst possible moment. Battles here are set in real-time and they stay snappy and fun throughout the whole game. In dungeons the transition into battle is seamless, you simply attack the enemies you come across meanwhile when crossing larger distances on the field map, you can still choose to try and avoid or engage enemies. During fights, you get the help from Higgledies, small elemental helpers that join you in battle and can serve as additional damage dealers, healers and more (you can equip up to four at a time). You can use points earned in battle to tweak your tactics, allowing you to do things like choosing to be stronger against certain elemental enemy types or less susceptible to specific debuffs. ◼️ Particular game characteristics The most interesting thing is the Kingdom building management. The quest to build and grow your kingdom is quite compelling. It’s your rendezvous between quests, a base of operations you can return to that’s always evolving as you add new facilities and expand its scope. The most interesting quests are made up to increase your followers by recruiting new citizens. The characters can then be assigned specific roles and help research new capabilities and improvements for your party skills. Meanwhile from the other side of the coin, something avoidable are the skirmish challenges, which sees you take four units of troops into battle. There’s a rock, paper, scissors element to these encounters as you rotate your units around Evan to try and counter the enemy unit types. Skirmishes are little clunky, annoying and unrewarding. ◼️ Overall difficulty The game is far too easy. I played the game at the maximum difficulty and I couldn’t die even by trying.
  • Graphic

  • ◼️ Art Design The first Ni no Kuni world had a beautiful world well worth saving, the new one is rubbish. I can’t explain why the total change in direction but this sequel world is a huge downgrade in art design and graphic quality. The colour palette inside the cities is colourful and beautiful to see, during world exploration it’s horrible, blank and sad. The characters are represented in a nightmarish bubblehead version, areas and environment are full of recycled content. What happened? The studio Ghibli wasn’t directly involved with the sequel, you don’t have animated cutscenes, you don’t have character design made by them, everything is “inspired” on the Ghibli art style and approved by them.
  • Soundtrack and Audio

  • ◼️ Music Probably the best thing of all the soundtrack is again composed by Studio Ghibli composer Joe Hisaishi and performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. ◼️ Voice Acting There is a sparsity of both voice acting and fully realised cutscenes. Overall the acting is really good and made by the official Studio Ghibli localization studio voice actors.
  • Extra

  • ◼️ DLC Some free content that adds a lot of subquests, items and building evolutions. Two bigger DLC: The Tale of the Timeless Tome and The Lair of the Lost Lord. I got them with the season pass and got bored to death, one is a two hours side quest that wants to make happy the longterm fans with easter eggs from the first game, the second one it’s a marathon of fights after fights in an endless randomly generated dungeon. ◼️ Replayability Not so high, mostly because the story doesn’t connect at all with the first one. ◼️ Game length Around 70 hours, with the DLCs add 15 more. ◼️ Achievements 63 more than half achievable in a normal run. ◼️ Steam Cards and Points Shop Items 7 steam cards but no items in the point shop.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2291202131

WHAT ISN'T WORKING OUT?

Zitat:

◼️ Fully-voiced and directed cutscenes are restricted to short snippets. Even static, voiced dialogue scenes are few and far between. The majority of the time you’re reading text on screen, either with no voice work or short expressions to illustrate overall intent. It all leaves Revenant Kingdom feeling very flat, and the writing and characters simply aren’t good enough to bridge the presentation gap.
◼️ The most hated thing is the randomly generated dungeons you’ll find, a hundred-floor maze where the exits are casual and random. Sometimes you are lucky and you’ll find the door soon, sometimes you get around the same corner ten times, sometimes the dungeon has a problem in generating the exit so you have to start everything from the beginning. Image arriving at the 77 floor after 3 hours and find out that you are stuck in a room without exit.
◼️ They cut a lot of content, there are some areas, activities and characters that feels misplaced and half made. Recycled content is common, here is too common. There is a single “model” of cave, a single model of temple, a single model forest. Every single dungeon is built upon the same three types of assets.

◼️ Bugs & Issues
Other than the dungeon bug sometimes the audio crashes, normally during the Skirmish Battles, I had to restart my pc to fix that.

JUDGEMENT

Zitat:

Legacy can be a burden. Ni no Kuni II is a relaxing and delightful journey, one full of interesting mechanics and fun battles.
Is it a good sequel? Not at all. Is it a good RPG? Not as well.
The game is charming, fun and delightful to play, but nothing more and nothing less. If you loved the first game you will end up hating this one. If you love J-RPGs you’ll gonna leave unfulfilled.

If you like Suikoden you probably will like it.

Pros:
+A game for people who love progression and build up.
+The soundtrack is unique but it aint my jam. Some tracks did caught my attention tho.
+Very nice graphics. Reminds me of Ghibli Film
+Solid JRPG + ARPG Hybrid
+Weapon Designs are pretty cool
+Really cool lore
+Some citizens are really memorable
+Lots of Content

Cons:
-The combat is really simple, just hack em or blast em, your choice.
-War/Siege/Skirmish are fun but it doesnt feel too prior for progression.
-Story is interesting, especially the lore. But the more it goes on, the more stupid it comes off
-Recruiting Citizens are practically the thing I hate the most. Not because its bad, its not fun. Its fun to recruit new citizens but being an errand boy is boring af
-Copy Pasta caverns/dungeons. I mean cmon.....this game is clearly overpriced
-Lack of enemy variation. There's like 12 types of enemies? I dont know because they arent interesting
-Combat Spells are literally useless, they take way too much frames after use thus leaving you vulnerable.
-Typical Japanese Game Tutorials THAT KEEP POPPING UP LIKE GODDA-
-Some citizens are blatantly designed along with a normal NPC
-You get only to have 6 playable character......I was so hyped when I recruited a Martial Artist....

Overall: Its not worth the full price. Wait for a 50% discount. Despite the many flaws, it is relatively still a good game. Will update when I get to play it again but with JP voice and see the experience changes

The gameplay gets increasingly complex and nuanced, but the intruduction is bite-sized and well explained.

Runs decently with older hardware.

I had bought the game on a sale shortly after buying Ni no Kuni 1. The game overall was pretty enjoyable. The combat was an improvement from the first, the story has a lot to be desired in comparison, and the overall attachment to the characters is none existent. As cheesy as the first one was, at least I found them enjoyable. What really hurt this game is not just the lack in the story department, no, it is post game content. It is broken and boring. Boring is going through dungeons that look identical to many of the dungeons you had gone in before. Procedural generation is a bad design choice as it allows more stuff, but with less resources. Unless you make an absurd amount of unique items/scenes, the patterns begin to show very quickly.

Why is broken? Apparently less than 10 minutes into a post game dungeon I have found myself in an infamous one room dungeon with no exits. Apparently it has been known about for years and the answer is to reload since your last save file. Which doesn't only feel crappy, but it basically starts you back to square one as the game does not save while in the dungeon. The devs had ignored this game breaking bug for years with zero fix. It completely can just undue 30 mins to an hours worth of work.

So ya, this game was already teetering on recommend or not, and frankly this is too egregious to ignore. The devs should feel nothing but shame for this nonsense. Save your money, like I wished I had, and just buy the first one only.

ONLY GET THIS IF IT'S LIKE 50% OFF

SKIP DLCs, NOT WORTH YOUR TIME

What I Liked:
  • Beautiful graphics with Studio Ghibli's 2D art style
  • Battles are NOT turn-based
  • Moderate story with lovable characters
  • A lot of the machanics in the game are pretty cool, such as the skirmish, higgledy stones, tainted monsters, and building a kingdom etc.

What I Didn't Like:
  • THE GRIND, GRIND, AND GRIND!
  • Combat looked alright at glance, became boring after few hours in game
  • Enemy AI was a bit weird and almost never flinched when getting attacked
  • Many of the machanics in game had great potential but also felt unfinished
  • The DLCs were jokes, added nothing but more grinding
  • DLC contained only 1% story-telling, 99% running in dungeons, fighting monsters, and getting loots
  • Actual in-game time was about 90 hours, used speedhack for end-game and DLC contents because it's just running in labyrinth most of the time

If you are a casual player who wants to try the game, go for it
The main game is actually really nice
Just don't bother with the DLCs, it's a waste of time

This game is just great. Honestly, I always had my eye on it since Im a sucker for long, story driven, grindy RPGs, so finally I bought it on sale for $14. If you ever played Star Ocean, Final Fantasy, Grandia or anything like that, this game is well worth it.
Combat is like Kingdom Hearts, or Star Ocean; real-time action-based hack-and-slash. Lots of Hyphens there. Combat uses a blend of familiar mechanics; fast attack, strong attack, ranged, and skills. Your attack combos feel fluid, and the skills are powerful and very pretty.
The game opens up after a brief introduction, giving you the option to free roam and kill a bunch of wandering baddies. When you roam around the country, your party looks like little chibi bobbleheads, but you can jump and collect things. I like how you can run around on the mountains and actually roam huge maps, jump on things, no invisible walls. The first level was complete with a huge unbeatable dragon, so this game has a nice nostalgic feel for me.
The less you know about the games progression and gameplay flow, the better. Theres alot of cool things you can collect and level up, and you basically build a huge kingdom.
And if all that doesn't get you interested, you play as the President of the United States. Like, straight up shoot a goblin in the face with a handgun.

Ni no Kuni II is a solid RPG. It's a nice length and doesn't overstay its welcome. I was able to beat the game without completing every side quest. The game is welcoming to its players - quest markers are easy to spot and track, the combat system isn't brutal, and the story is presented clearly. Some folks say that this game is too easy. I think it depends on what you are looking for. If you want a punishing RPG that'll cause your hands to sweat during battle, that's not Ni no Kuni II. If you want a fun, beautiful, bright RPG that will make you smile and feels like watching a Saturday morning cartoon, Ni no Kuni II is perfect.

Stunning graphics, excellent yet diverse mechanics, awesome music & character design placed atop a compelling story makes for one awesome game.

In Short,
There's not much more I can ask for from a game than this and I'd recommend it to anyone who wanted either a gateway into RPGs or just want a chill game that looks fantastic and plays really well.

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom features three genres of action which are suitably challenging and interesting to play, which is also always keeping you on your toes. On top of this, there's a whole element of town building that's really fun to explore as a relaxing alternative to the action based open-world.
The story is by far one of the best I've played in a long while and it's super easy to get invested into. With compelling characters and a riveting plus deep plot, it's really held my attention well.
The most attractive feature of this game for me was the beautiful graphics and animation. The world feels awesome to explore as everything is so wonderfully depicted and feels alive.
Finally, the main combat (that you'll experience both first and most commonly throughout the game) feels super satisfying and reminiscent of old Zelda games. If that sounds like something you'd like then I can 100 percent recommend this game to you.

While this game has a beautiful aesthetic and a fun opening it has sadly fell pray to the bland phone game school of design. The combat looks pretty but feels heavily weighted towards the stats of your weapons over any skill or tactics on the part of the player. The battles are even shallower than the main combat. And the town-building layer is just a time wasting grind.

Its important to note, you do not need any former knowledge of the setting to play this game, both the first game and the film are unrelated in terms of character and plot, they just take place in the same worlds.

Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is the greatest RPG I have ever played, and I'm not sure if I can even say that I've played a better game at all. This game is borderline perfect. The visuals are stunningly vibrant. The gameplay is always enjoyable, even during the few times you have to grind for XP. The story is wholesome, touching, and well-told. The characters are thought-out and meaningful. The soundtrack is beautiful, but sadly difficult to find.

This game is for just about everyone. There are dungeon crawls, boss fights, exploration, side quests for days, kingdom management, it's got everything. I find it just as, if not more enjoyable to play on easier difficulties. It doesn't need to be challenging, because its just so fun, but it can be very difficult if you prefer that.

If you, like myself, did not like the combat of the first game, then this game is for you. Just as narratively beautiful as the first, but with a more classic RPG combat system.

I could keep going on about this game, but you should just buy it. It's so good. Get it before the next game, and then get that one too.

I was unsure if I should play Ni No Kuni 2 before the first one, but man I'm really glad I played it anyway.

The story is really nice, although a bit predictable, and the main cast is unique and really makes you enjoy their interactions with each other. The gameplay is what I loved the most, as there are a LOT of different mechanics and things to do.

You not only explore and fight, but also manage a Kingdom where you can build structures, research skills and spells, buy armors and weapons and other stuff. It just offers a ton of content aside from the main story which I really enjoyed. And of course, there are your usual side quests, and if that's not enough, there's another mechanic where you get randomly generated quests that refresh after a while. Lots of stuff to do!

Music and art was really nice, and the only few things that bothered me A BIT, just a bit, were: localization (as I played with Japanese audio, kinda eh when you see how many names they changed) and caves. Most caves are just a room with nothing on them aside a few shinies on the ground, would've been nice to have more dungeon-esque caves. Still, there's a lot of other places to go so it's fine. In the end, it wasn't that bothersome, but I just wanted to share it anyway.

Edit: Something I forgot to mention, the clothes/hair/etc are done so well. I don't think I've seen anything clip over the characters ever, really amazing honestly.

I totally recommend this if you like wholesome stories (I mean, Ghibli vibes everywhere) and a lengthy game to play. I haven't finished it at 100% yet, but I will, because it's just that fun!

Buy this if you like fighting the same enemies with palette swaps for 50+ hours. **warning this spoiler will completely ruin the boss fight super late game!!** the boss guarding mornstar is the same one you fight approx 5 hours into the game which then becomes a generic enemy that gets 3 palette swaps and he returns but with red flame decals all over it and with the same moveset.

its a bad game

PROS:
Revamped and fun combat system
Beautiful soundtrack that never goes wrong
The kingdom management mode is addictive because it allows you to create a kingdom and get upgrades
Beautiful world that is full of personality
Game mechanics consistent with the world

CONS:
The story touches on interesting topics, but does not delve into them
Various characters feel underdeveloped
Many simple and fetch quest side missions
Little variety of enemies

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is a charming game that takes JRPG essentials for the first PlayStation and modernizes them with current design to deliver an experience that fans of the genre will like and that will be accessible to the rest. We are facing a title that was the responsibility of a team that did it with love and intense passion to deliver an adventure that makes its players feel immersed in a dimension that has the power to steal anyone's heart.

A wonderful game, a beautiful fairy tale plot and excellent musical accompaniment. Very well conveyed the style of the Studio Ghibli. During the game, there is a feeling that you are watching another movie from Hayao Miyazaki.Beautiful fabulous countries and wonderful world. The game brings a lot of wonderful and positive emotions :D There may not be an abundance of quests in the open world, but exploring it and finding treasures with nice music is fun, especially when you fly on an airship. The game has become one of my favorites and I really hope for the continuation of the story.

Thanks! (Sorry for my English)

Summary:
This is not “another JRPG”, if you are weary of JRPGs this one may bring you the renew you are looking for.

Pro

●︎ The gameplay: You begin with 1 char, and you finish with a team of 4. They have different skills and so you can design a team according to what you prefer in a selection of 6 chars. Gameplay also include simplified str and management.
●︎ The open world: The map is great, large, and beautiful. You will be progressively able to explore it… in different ways ;) *suspense successfully added ✔︎*
●︎ Fights: They are simple, buts boss design – while a bit repetitive – is nice ????
●︎ Story: Cute story. Simple, efficient, and cute.
●︎ Ambiance: The general ambiance when exploring is not the most impressive one, but they gave a real soul to each town, with a unique ambiance for each.
●︎ OST: More or less same than for ambiance. General OST is cool, but towns’ OST are super appropriated to each town.
●︎ Graphis: Nice anime graphics for chars, world looks a bit more realistic.

Con

●︎ The gameplay: Each char cannot use all the spells of the game. That’s sad, and restricts the possibilities that the game could have.
●︎ The replayability: After finished the game, you only have choice to continue BEFORE the last boss. So, the game lost his interest, while you still have things to do. Do not understand why they did that… That impact the volunty to buy DLC or begin a new game…

[TL;DR at the bottom]

Ni No Kuni is in equal parts an incredibly atmospheric, sometimes beautiful game but also frustratingly simple and entirely unwanting to take risks or build tension when it comes to its story. The opening to the game suggests otherwise, as players witness the destruction of the United States by another country which prompts its president to be isekai'd to an anime fantasy world god I wish that was me.

Starting off with technical aspects, the game ran entirely smoothly throughout my 45 hour playthrough. It did crash once, however not during gameplay but when starting it up – there were no framerate issues, no matter how particle-rich the spell was and no broken quests. The worst technical issues I've encountered were NPC's getting stuck in walls on 2 occassions and one boss arena having a graphical error, which resulted in the water pool around the arena appearing fragmented. Those 45 hours on the highest difficulty included most sidequests and activities albeit I probably have a solid 10 hours left to properly finish all of it, including stuff like a level capped free DLC quest.

The core gameplay of Ni No Kuni is rather straightforward and people who have played games like Tales of [Zestiria/Beseria] will feel at home fairly quickly – every character has a weapon type with their own moveset; a bunch of learnable spells that sometimes overlap with other characters and something unique to Ni No Kuni, being the Higgledies. Essentially small sprite creatures that you can activate during combat that execute special abilities. The combat is simple but fluent and I can appreciate trying to add some depth to it with something like the Higgledies, though I chose never to use them and neither did I have to as the game is fairly well known to be not that hard no matter which difficulty you choose. In fact, the higher difficulties seem to only ever increase the damage output of enemies and (much worse) their health pool. This'd result in me getting regularly 1-2 shot by enemies, which'd be very much fine as the combat is fluent enough to not make learning attack patterns and dodge windows a chore; However towards the end of the game some enemies would take an easy 5+ minutes to defeat, which quickly becomes fairly boring.

As with the Higgledies, the rest of the game feels somewhat bloated with mechanics that seem polished but serve more as hiccups to the pacing of the game than anything else. A good example are Skirmish-sections that sometimes appear during the main story and sidequests, in which you control a small army (4 seperate Units that also need to be seperately leveled) – in a rock, paper, scissors kinda minigame. You're limited to merely moving and activating abilities and while I get that the developers tried to give you a feel of commanding an army, it still feels off at the best of times and obnoxious at the worst when you realize you have to seperately grind units for these quests.

The same holds true for your kingdom. While it feels rewarding to slowly upgrade it, seeing the numbers inflate and opportunities to upgrade open up, the game is simply bloated with crafting menues and buildings that honestly don't do much. The worst offender was the armor/-weapon blackmsith as not once I've found any reason to upgrade your equipment as you can easily find the next tier of equipment out by grinding mobs. And why should you waste your resources on that if you have 20-ish other facilities that may or may not use any of those resources?

Spells, Cooking, Higgledies, Barracks to upgrade experience, Training grounds to upgrade different experience – The game drowns itself in the illusion of you actually progressing as in the end my kingdom was fully build but I never really used it for anything else than passive upgrades.

That being said, the core gameplay still holds up and honestly feels alot better than some similar titles like the aforementioned Tales of [...] series. This same fluency and focus on learning attack patterns and possible combos to your inputs; mechanics that reward switching between multiple weapons on the fly and mixing those with skills and magical attacks makes me want to draw comparisons to NieR Automata rather than most contemporary JRPG's.

Storywise Ni No Kuni is somewhat of a mixed bag in that it is exactly what you see on the store page and nothing else: A hero /- coming-of-age adventure story that never ever dares to break form. This can work and has worked for Ghibli in the past but requires incredibly creative world-building – here in the form of gimmicks that define the other kingdoms that you visit. Whether Ni No Kuni succeeds is something that heavily depends on your judgement of Ghibli as Ni No Kuni is very reminiscent of their works. As someone who doesn't really like most of their products, I found Ni No Kuni usually being fairly on the mark and only ever being frustrating in terms of being unable to relate to Evans decision making (Chapter 9), or the game teasing a possible twist but immediately dismissing it in the next cutscene (Chapter 8) – while the story flows fine and the ideas and world building is there, it never builds suspense. It's just the more of the same chapter after chapter.

TL;DR
+ Well optimized; No framerate stutters etc.
+ Fluent and well designed action oriented combat system.
+ Well polished game-design, OST etc.

+/- Only minor technical issues, mostly relating to graphical issues and NPC pathing.
+/- Bloated game mechanics, many of which border on uselessness.

- Unbalanced combat results in ineffective character upgrades; Higher difficulties make enemies damage sponges.
- Repetetive sidequests and aforementioned bloat makes alot of progression feel worthless.
- Exceedingly linear story that goes out of its way to avoid building tension; Some plot elements are never explored and/or answered.

Ni No Kuni is very much a mixed bag. While most of the criticism I've layed out are minor annoyances, it adds up to a sometimes quite boring or even frustrating experience. While I was blown away during the early hours, setting myself up to 100% the game and possibly the DLC's, the sheer repetitiveness and sterile plot particular in the second half had me quickly lose interest and is something that could've been avoided with better balancing and pacing.

Can't remember the last time I enjoyed a JRPG so much.
I still have a long way to go but this game gives you so much to do.
- You get to work on your own kingdom where you upgrade buildings for better weapons and armour.
- There are bounties for certain monsters. They are a bit challenging.
- You get over 100 Higglegy to collect. They are these tiny things that help you during the battles.

I would recommend playing the game on Hard mode since a lot of people are complaining that normal mode is too easy. The monsters in this game are gorgeous yet they are also super fun to kill.
The storyline isn't super dramatic or anything special but it is cute like most things in this game and really lighthearted.

A dull narrative overshadows this otherwise charming world.

Aesthetic: 9/10
Gameplay: 7/10
Story: 2/10

In the aftermath of a swift coup, Prince Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum of Ding Dong Dell sets out to build a new kingdom and end all wars.

There is so much to want to like about this game. The core cast is youthful and dutifully connects to the world. The art style takes inspiration from Studio Ghibli, further cementing its charm. The gameplay is thorough and engaging, but suffers from recycled content. Unfortunately both the charm and the fun are held back by boring dialogue and a forgettable story.

Recommendation: If you don't want to be disappointed, wait for a sale.

Ni No Kuni 2 isn't a bad game... but it isn't as good as the first. I honestly gave it a chance, playing over 80 hours but it never got to anything more than a slightly pleasant game with a cute art style.

The battle system is kind of clunky, but it's fine. You'll basically just go in punching everything and using magic occasionally. I'm sure I could have explored this more, but just using the three characters I had was good enough without really doing anything. I did a LOT of level grinding and never got to a point where I felt super powerful or anything.

The voice acting itself isn't bad, but it's like they couldn't decide if they wanted to make the game fully-voiced or not, and ended up with a weird mishmash of full, partial, and stock-voice that becomes jarring really fast.

The writing is really the weakest part of the game. Ni No Kuni 1 pulls at your heart and makes you feel like the characters matter, and you really get attached to them. 2 doesn't do that. It puts the charactedrs in situations where I felt like I SHOULD care, but I just... didn't. There was an attempt to make the villain have some depth by adding a tragic love-interest storyline at the VERY end, but it didn't come off as authentic nor have the obvious punch that the writers intended.

I think the kingdom mechanics were interesting and actually enjoyed them, but would have liked them to actually matter overall. They don't really.

Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom focuses on Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum, the half-catfolk prince of Ding Dong Dell, who loses the crown due to a coup, which was staged by the ratfolk faction. During the coup, Evan meets Roland, a mysterious man from another world, who helps Evan escape the coup and helps Evan build his own country. Will they manage to make their own kingdom, where the people are respected and no one suffers discrimination? Find out now.

Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom has done an excellent job. It is a JRPG, where you also need to build your own kingdom to achieve your dream. And this is quite an amazing thing for any JRPG to have. That is pretty much it. And while this might sound boring, I must say that this game has one of the best storylines ever. The writing is simply so good that you want it to never stop. The game has very beautiful OST, quite a big and charming world for you to explore, many characters that are actually interesting to follow and an approximately 40 hour journey for you to undertake.

All in all, there is nothing for me to criticize in this game, yet, what I disliked about it was the fact that there should have been more voiced scenes. Because the game is like 80% reading and 20% listening to the dialogues. That is, indeed, not much of a problem, but when you want to relax, reading is the last thing you want to do. Other than that, it is a pure must buy material for any fan of JRPGs.

It's a beautiful game, the characters are adorable but the story is really childish and cliche, which is a letdown, if you're looking for a good narrative driven RPG, this wouldn't be a good choice. However the real-time action based combat system is very fun, especially for those memorable boss fight.

I've never played the first game, but I found this to be fun enough to finish.
I personally don't think it's worth $60, but I feel I got my money's worth after picking it up for sale for $30.
7.5/10

TL;DR
In my experience with RPGs, not grindy at all. The game doesn't allow you to cheese battles by limiting healing items per battle, but you still can pull through tough bosses under-leveled with patience. The story is enjoyable, though uninspired yet captivating. I found the 2nd half of the game difficult because the enemies decided to skip 10 levels ahead of mine all of a sudden.

Combat:
Basic, slow strong attacks, fast weak ones. Build up skill points to use on special abilities that can stun enemies.
I like using all the characters, except Leander (sorry Leander, you're terrible with the spear wtf)
YOU CAN STORE MORE THAN 99 HEALING ITEMS
...But your healer is the last member to join the party...really ._.?

Music:
Great in some parts (like the world-map theme, airship theme, evermore kingdom's theme, ordinary battle theme)
but the soundtrack in some levels like Snaketooth Ridge and Goldpaw don't feel appropriate for the setting.
I'm sitting in an empty canyon somewhere and all of a sudden the music is playing like the world is ending, or it just gets really annoying after a while.
Joe Hisaishi, famous for his contributions to the Studio Ghibli movies and other works, seems best suited for non-looping soundtracks (since most of his works are made for films). Though, that's my naive assumption.

Story:
The story flows smoothly (for good or for bad). But don't expect it to be original or unpredictable. The characters aren't boring, though the lore is lacking. The writing of the over arching plot seems rushed since there are a lot of things left unanswered by the end of the game.
Anyone remember that evil mouse guard guy we fought that one time in the beginning? Never heard of him again as far as I know.
Other than that, I found it enjoyable enough to keep following it to the end.
I even had fun conversing with my own citizens before their responses started to cycle.

Unfair Criticisms (that I've repeatedly seen in some reviews):
Zitat:
There is no voice acting for all the lines

Final Fantasy IX doesn't have any voice acting at all and I think it did ok.
Also the sheer magnitude of text to voice act would really make it difficult for localization.

I could not recommend this game enough, especially if you're a fan of the first game. in my opinion, the graphics are stellar, the characters believable and empathisable(?). The story is long but it's length is no downside, even after only a couple hours of gameplay I was willing to play for 100 hours and completely fill, make, and upgrade the kingdom. The controls on pc are a great change from the first game (although occasionally confusing), the combat is, in my opinion, better than the original game, especially after the DLC adds more.

my only downside is that a few side quests progressively become harder the higher your level, and if a few more (only maybe 10) side quests had some kind of story and not just be a fetch quests.

All in all, 9.9/10, highly recommended to fans of RPGs and games like final fantasy, definitely worth the price and play time.

Gameplay
While the balance can be a bit iffy at times, the action oriented combat is still engaging and satisfying in a way that a lot of JRPGs fail at. Many seem to dislike the kingdom management bits, but I found no objection to them, and coming back to a host of upgrades was fun.

The Battle Sequences, however, are the weakest point, and generally invoke groans when made mandatory. Mostly they can be skipped, and hell, even Zelda has a few ill-conceived stealth sections.

4 points – Great. This is what will keep you playing, if you do.

Music
Not bad, competent, but nothing truly earth shattering. There is one aspect which is really strange, though, and that’s a number of the music tracks can’t seem to decide the emotion they want to convey, going from an ominous opening to a bouncy, lighthearted, cheerful affair in many instances. Then it loops and the dissonance begins again. But this is reflective of the underlying dissonance of the game and its tone overall, so it’s arguably appropriate.

3 points – Fairly Decent

Design
The design ranges from standard and acceptable to just… no. The most egregious example is the “Kingmaker” Lofty, a garishly colored pint-sized noise gremlin with an obnoxious faux-Scottish accent. The other Kingmakers you come across as grand, glorious, noble dragons that would make for an amazing companion, even scaled down to “non-combat” proportions.

Nope. You get an ill-formed blob with googly eyes.

2 points – Subpar. Most of the game is fairly competent, particularly in the enemy department, but the actual player characters and party are lacking.

Characters
While some of the characters are fun, particularly one later game villain who’s an absolutely delightful send up of corporate tech. mega-moguls, the good ones don’t get enough screen time, and the ones who do? …

The game pulls a Raiden, where suddenly instead of the awesome protagonist you expect (I call him President Badass), you’re plopped into the driver seat of one of the guileless, witless, most obnoxiously weeble-lipped shell of a protagonists I’ve ever seen. King Evan Tildrum is Tales of Symphonia Colette turned up to 11, made into the main protagonist, and given a story role that’s exponentially worse for that persona. He's not an “innocent child sacrifice” - he's out to effectively conquer the world.

For its own good, of course.

This blubbering weenie is our hero? Sure, you can shove him to the back in combat and pretend he’s not there, but there are still many sequences where he’s forced on you, and he heads up most of the non-combat/dungeon gameplay without any options for anyone else. And this cliché cat-boy couldn’t get more clawless if you chopped off his hands. His stuttering, whining, doe-eyed, child-of-perpetual-innocence, “golly!” schtick wears out almost instantly and never, ever lets up.

Sorey of Tales of Zestiria, I humbly apologize.

1 Point – Utterly Dreadful. I love Zip Vector, but he can’t even begin to outdo Pettiwhisker to save this.

Story
This could have been an incredibly interesting story with some of the most with one of the most fringe, subversive, and down-right psychotic openings you could imagine. Instead it immediately drops the ball on it’s abject insane opening, wets itself, and crawls under the skirt of ultra-generic, hyper-saccharine JRPG pablum that the opening leaves no room for.

Spoilers for the first five damn minutes of this, but
NO!!! No no no, Ni No Kuni 2! BAD GAME! You do NOT get to NUKE A MAJOR CITY, cast the world into a war of absolute Armageddon, then shelve that and in favor of “let’s go on an adventure with the power of friendship and anime!”
Somewhere there had to have been some wacky mix up in the narrative notes between this and a completely different game, and too much of this game had been developed by the time anyone realized to stop. It’s a heluva gimmick to get your attention, but it fails to deliver in every way.

Then it gets worse.

Repeated bouts of “we must stand here and let the villain monolog!” hyper-predictable “twists” with more projection than the Hollywood Museum of Film Technology, and the “resolution” to the first and most driving conflict
(other than the NUCLEAR WAR at the beginning)
, just about made me quit playing.

0 points – Screamingly Terrible. I was going to give a point for that drug trip of an opening, but then I reached the penultimate chapter.

Overall -
The game has a really strong core play loop and the mechanics are very competent. In the G of RPG, Ni No Kuni 2 does an excellent job. Unfortunately, that’s just 1/3 of an RPG, and while the gameplay is great, the story, characters, and themes struggle to reach the heights of average, and generally wallow below that. It might have a solid budget that comes through, that can’t begin to make up for the underlying, fundamental problems.

2 points – Subpar. If you're big into JRPGs, and/or have a much higher tolerance for stories told with the edge of a PBS kids special (with a few jarring spikes of glaring horror thrown in here and there), then you'll definitely get something out of this game,. If not, you'll be better off spending your time elsewhere.

Great game! I played the first one on PS3 when it came out and loved it quite a bit. When the second one came out, I twinged a bit seeing it was no longer turn-based like the first one. I like the old school JRPGs and that's always been a staple of the genre. Over years that has changed and I guess I've had to adapt.

Story is decent. It isn't excellent but it is decent and [generally] coherant complete with a few twists.

Gameplay is generally solid. Combat plays out reasonable well tho I miss my turn-based. No more random encounters as you can see monsters in the world unlike the first one. Lots of loot. Armor. Accessories. Weapons. Usual RPG fare.

Kingdom building is tedius but generally worthwhile as it gives you a secondary way to improve your character, army, et al via research. It also makes a minigame of sorts in chasing down new citizens with new specializations.

Skirmishes.... ehhh.... I hated them honestly. I'm just thankful they are almost entirely avoidable sans a few times. Some folks may like them, not me.

Overall a good buy. I got it on sale for like $20 and certainly worth the price.

Flippin' heck, mun!

The combat is not very complex, and neither is the story, honestly, but the game is some good, simple jrpg fun. The kingdom building, citizen gathering, and sidequest grinding adds a ton of content ad is fun if you're into that sort of thing.
