The other team are boring old US marine core. SEMPER FI soldier! You can play as a male or a lesbian marine. Don't ask don't tell! The US marine core has access to Chinese technology like nerve gas and faulty jetpacks that fly a few feet before you have to land and let them recharge. The aliens and the marines are always fighting, and they've been fighting so long that they both forgot what they were fighting about. It was because an alien stole a marine sandwich. I know because I saw it.

To the developers credit they have been continually updating the game despite the limited amount of players but the direction they push this game towards seems to be in line with an esport focus that this game doesn't really have, causing casual players to leave as the game becomes more punishing and frustrating to play so that it can be more competitive at the highest ranks. This isn't really doing many benefits for the playerbase numbers and finding a game has been getting harder and harder with the few games you do get into probably being dominated by long time competitive veterans since that's the only portion of the playerbase really left at this point.
The only way to fix this would be a Natural Selection 3 so they could re-do the new player experience and find a clear goal on what kind of game they want Natural Selection to be. Maybe add a campaign to explain what's happening and give new players a better way to learn the gameplay, fix the netcode, use a new engine... There's so much they could do with the series but it's hamstrung by the developers still trying to keep NS2 alive on life support.

Unfortunately my experience was tainted by players who had hundreds of hours in game being hostile and toxic to me and my friends for trying to learn how to play.
Only recommend if you have time to learn the game outside of actually playing it - lest the veterans get their panties in a knot.

I won't go into the details of the game itself; many other reviews do that well enough. I just want to address some of the more common complaints espoused typically by players with 10 hours or less who feel entitled to give a $2.50 game a negative review.
- Yes, you will have to learn to even be somewhat useful to your team. Ask questions, observe high level players, and for heaven's sake LISTEN TO YOUR COMMANDER!
- Yes, there is (currently) not a good matchmaking system with instant games no matter the time of day. This is not a game you'll want to no life 24 hours a day; better to get a few games in on your favorite server during prime time.
- No, the game is not dead. There are plenty of experienced and new players alike playing during EU and US primetimes every day. The game itself is now maintained and developed by the community itself, which honestly is a miraculous and commendable fact. You did not pay $60 for this game: maybe act accordingly.
- Yes, you will need to wait to get into games. If a server is full, join as a spectator, Tilde > type 'rr' to join the waitlist, and take the chance to watch the better players and learn. Also you'll likely have much to learn about mechanics at this point, so simply join a server that's not full and seed it while you play against bots.
- There are some pricks that feel the need to talk shit (they're rarely the best players). Simply mute them in the player listing page and go on enjoying your life. You don't need those vibes, anyway.
- USE YOUR MAP!!

Sadly, the playerbase is rapidly dwindling, and the veteran mentality only serves to drive people off. As of the time of this review, the player peak over a week has been 309 people.

You need a mic to enjoy this game. If you choose to command, you need to be able to well, command. If you're a foot soldier or an alien life form you need to be able to call out effectively. Mic is essential.
If you're a Commander, you're an aircraft controller, herding cats, and taking the blame. If you're a Marine, you're flicking your rifle to each corner of the room, flashlight on, as you hear tiny feet and goober-y things in the vents only for them to emerge from the woodwork all at once and overwhelm your squad. If you're an Alien Life Form you navigate a maze of vents, abandoned buildings, storage compartments, crawling up walls, flying through rooftops and phasing through space itself only to be gunned down because you were looking at your map waiting for dumbass skulk to fucking parasite something.
And it's all awesome!

I played the original which was a mod for HL and it was great
you have to manage and expand your base while communicating with your team and there are always new players because of the low player count but learning is easy if you stay with your squad and playing as an alien walking on walls is very fun

I have tried a lot of other multiplayer games over the years, most of them bore you quickly, that's why you are here reading this, aren't you ? Looking for that special game.
Don't worry you wont get lost : devs are still here, competitive community is still active, servers are running, you can find a lot of infos about the game mechanics, maps are also updated...etc
Definitly worth more than a try.

It's a good game, it's got good devs, but it has a bad community, and unless you want the (already tiny!) playerbase to continue slowly dying off, people are going to need to change their attitudes.

please get this, it has a small but very dedicated playerbase
and the devs literally built their own engine for this
nothing beats playing as an alien critter, crawling up a wall,
and dropping from the ceiling on an unsuspecting marine
then doing an alien chuckle 10/10

PROS:
• The game play loop and teamwork is incredibly unique, and allows for both micro and macro management for the commander during fights. Nothing in the world is more satisfying than ordering a marine into a dark room to take out a harvester by himself with no backup, and calling out an alien that is laying in wait behind him as you drop him healthpacks. That alien kill feels like a shared kill, and it's a bonding moment for both commander and marine.
• Asymmetrical team designs means that the game plays and feels very different depending on which team you are fighting for, and allows for some interesting counter plays and strategies that can only work for one side or another.
• Asymmetrical map design is also helpful here, with vents and certain chasm areas offering flank routes for the high mobility aliens alone, unless the marines use teamwork to boost allies into vents or after the marines unlock jetpacks, which changes the map dynamic and fight responses.
• Weapon balance seems pretty damn good, and weapon upgrades affect all weapons across the board so no one weapon becomes better or worse over time.
• The jet-pack is one of the most satisfying mobility tools I have ever used in a video game, as it's basically used mostly for rocket-assisted-bhopping.
• The resource system generating resources for both individuals to buy weapons and armaments and the team's commander to build structures and upgrade buildings and weapons means that every single person on the team cares deeply about advancing the RTS side of the game and both seizing and protecting resource harvesters.
• The interface for commander is easy enough that brand new commanders can be rather easily coached through the minimum required actions for a successful game, such as placing resource harvesters and key buildings and researching upgrades, by simple descriptions from veterans.
• Excellent and comprehensive ping system for infantry units to communicate and request commander support.
• Art style is perfect Colonial Marines vs Aliens, creepy and terrifying atmosphere makes you shit your pants when you have to push into a sector that has had power disabled.
CONS:
• Difficult to learn as a new player if playing against experienced veterans, so stick to newbie-only servers for at least the first 15 hours if you want to be able to learn the basics.
• Small population count at certain EST morning times, so you might have to play against bots. This isn't much of a downside for my preference honestly, because I've had a great time with teams of friends fighting against a bot team for hours and hours at a time. Bots are usually ruthless and always play optimized, so you need to play smart to beat them.
• Commanders can be hit-or-miss, often with newbies stepping up to command, so if you are a veteran or even a newer player who can see that the commander is doing something wrong or is missing something, please speak up and let the commander know. Use your ping system a lot when you have a newbie commander, it helps out a lot as they might not know your callouts of map locations by heart.
Conclusion
Game is super fun, and goes on sale often. I picked this game up years ago for 10 bucks and forgot about it, and then started playing it in the last 2 years. For that price, it was worth the fun I've had so far. For the sale price of $1.99 that it's priced at currently, it's a literal steal. Buy the four pack and give it to your friends, and I promise you, you will have fun.
BUY THIS GAME IT'S SUPER FUN

Shame, I really liked running around as aliens and nomming some booty. but the players induce so much rage in me, its not worth it. its not. I'd say buy it and try it but there will never be a third game either so why even open up that can of worms? you'd either love it and be sad about the game state - or hate it and regret it. and it would be due to its players almost solely.
I've played this game at several points in its lifecycle from release till now, never really putting a lot of time into it, in the past that was because I had no friends who played this... now its because the playerbase is so small. and of those few players so stuck in their meta even fewer are willing to guide and try to actually beath life into their dying game. shame.
save your money. better games and time spent elsewhere.

But let me be clear, this is strictly a team based game. If you want to get the most out of this experience, you need to understand this. I'm a strong advocate for seeing new players in the game, and always willing to show them the ropes, but some players might not be so accommodating.
Please, if you're interested in getting involved in what I consider the most fun multiplayer game ever, all I ask is that before you join servers, make sure you play through the tutorials, they really do cover all the basics. Putting in this little bit of effort will result in a huge payoff, and you will soon learn to understand what it means to come together as a team to earn a truly rewarding payoff.
Looking forward to chewing some marines with you soon!

I've never played anything like it. It's infuriating, exhilarating, tense, manic and always interesting. There are just enough variables that, no matter how hopeless it seems - your team, if they communicate and work together effectively, can ALWAYS find a way to win at the last moment - and snatching those 'Against all odds' victories is an experience that I've never had in any other game.
Unlike other games where teamwork is encouraged - here it's not only essential, it's the very foundation on which everything is built. You simply can't do anything, much less win unless everyone is on the same page.
I've never played a multiplayer game that gets me this invested. Sometimes games can be quick - less than 5 minutes. Sometimes they can go on for an hour or more and it's those where you will find one of the most exciting and exhausting gaming experiences of your life - where it turns into a battle of wills and stamina. Both sides just going at it, trying to find a weakness, implementing every strategy and tactic in the book until eventually one side loses focus for just a moment and WHAM! the enemy team can take advantage and stanch a victory.
This game has been out now for 8 years - I've yet to play anything that has consistently held my interest for this long. I can't recommend it enough.
It's going to be a bit of a learning curve when you start. Especially when dealing with the bigger picture stuff. Until then follow instructions from the commander. Ask advice if you need to and just hit that back res!

There is some criticism that this game is elitist, but i'm not very good and no one is hostile to me. If you are new and jump in thinking it's CoD and try to be rambo you're going to get flak because you're easy pickins and that's just going to lose it for your team.
This is the core gameplay mode, but there is also more of an arena style mode (look for combat mod servers) for a less team oriented fps match.
Easily provides 100+ hours of fun and worth it at any price.

Decided i would try playing the game again after a few years and on the first game i play as commander, I get eject voted. I stepped down and decided I would just spectate to learn how these guys play as some of them are apparently streaming on twitch and within no more than a minute or two of watching, a vote kick was called on me as a spectator...
If you are new or a returning player, you are going to have to be prepared for peoples trash talking. This game just isn't the same, jump in and play for fun, like during the launch. There is a strong meta and you better get ready to play a certain way.

As a marine player you cautiously move through rooms keeping an eye on vents and ceilings for lurking aliens waiting to pounce on you, while your commander throws down depots and research pods for you to construct and issues instructions from their top-down view. As the match progresses you receive upgrades and access to new tech courtesy of your commander's work, and the strategy morphs into a late game power level akin to what you might find in an RTS game.
Comparatively, as an alien you look for opportunties to pick off lone marines, or construct biowalls and plant turrets. You'll take advantage of super speed, invisibility and other abilities to navigate around and outwit your opponents. The alien commander will slowly spread creep across the map and bring in upgrades to passively enhance your abilities.
When the matchmaking gets it right and the teams are balanced then the matches are, hands down, some of the best experiences I've ever had in gaming. Unfortunately, while there remains a dedicated fan base that continue to populate servers, games are rarely ever balanced, with stacks of good players frequently sitting on one team each match. Some servers force skill based team reshuffles to try and break this up, but good players that just want to play with their friends will simply rejoin the lobby to get where they want to be. Unfortunately, those imbalanced games are frequently stompfests that're loads of fun for the winners and utterly miserable for the losers. You never get the same crushed feeling you get from being in an obviously losing match in a game like DOTA 2, but it's not much fun all the same.
Another challenge in the game is that you will SUCK when first playing. There's a learning curve and it starts off straight out at difficult. You'll die a LOT, and just as you're starting to get a grip on the basics then you'll be offered alternative aliens with new abilities to learn, or new marine weapons to use, and you'll be right back at the beginning all over again. Because the upgrades cost in game resources to access then you'll play a match and save up for something new you want to try, get it and then IMMEDIATELY die and waste the resources that you have to wait for to have another shot at it.
The combat itself is kinda cheesy and super clunky to a certain extent. Fights between marines and skulks (basic alien unit) are frequently bunny hopping spam messes with manic camera spinning by both sides as the alien tries to constantly remain out of aim of the marine player while still chomping at their legs. You get better at it as you play more, but I feel it's a super silly form of combat to have in a modern game. The late game fights are a lot more sensible in terms of what's going on, but because skirmishes between the basic units of both sides are common throughout the match then you better get used to the silliness of those fights.
Because of the steep learning curve then it's difficult to recommend this game unless you're a persistent person that really likes the FPS/RTS hybrid genre. However, as I said in my opener, I wish more people played this because I think it's a fantastic game that has produced some of my favourite gaming experiences despite me never reaching any semblance of real skill at it.
(As an aside, the developers went on to make Subnautica, which is also superb and I recommend you look at as well.)

Learn the game, ignore the trolls.
For some reason,
this community is literally 40% neckbeards that will judge and belittle you, even dehumanize you,
based on your 'rank', which is literally a dead stat that is easily abused.
I even got flamed out of the official discord once for suggesting tooltips for new players.
This community genuinely doesn't want you unless you are an FPS god.
Is the game good?
Heck yeah. One of my favorites.
Truly sad how a toxic playerbase can keep such a gem of a game so unwelcoming.
I've played on and off since it came out, so 8 years.

The devs ruined NS. NS2 is absolutely terrible compared to NS1. The first thing they did wrong was they changed the ideology from the two sides being diametrically different to making them more similar. The second terrible thing they did was hire a Call of Duty dev to develop a real time strategy game. The design ethos went from the strategic and tactical equivalent of Battlefield 4 to brain-dead Call of Duty. The horrible call of duty elements that have been added have ruined NS. The devs even tried to make NS2 an esport. The most recent balance changes entirely favor highly skilled players (those that participate in esports) at the complete detriment of regular players.
I do not recommend buying this game, even for only $2.
