A game that's over a decade old with ageing graphics...
Among the thousands of other games on Steam, why even bother with this one? - don't look away because the quality of gameplay is why Nation Red needs your attention. This is a top-down fast-paced shooter where you have to defend (some times yourself and other objectives) from a hordes of zombies. It has over 140 achievements and can be played in single player, co-op (up to 4 people) with friends or random players. There's also a scoreboard, where you can try and beat other players.
This is like the top-down version of Killing Floor or Left 4 Dead but on a smaller scale - It's too much fun and offers lots of replayability.
There are tons of weapons, perks and power-up to pick up. You can chose to combine perks with power-ups, to extend and add more fun to your mayhem.
Each of the four playable classes has their own strengths and weaknesses. So learn what weapons and power-ups suits them best. Or you could just play as you like :)
There are various types of zombies and zombie bosses and each has different ways to deal damage to you and affect your gameplay.
If you feel like there's not enough to this game, then look no further - there are different game modes such as: Barricade mode (hold off zombies for as long as you can), Survival mode (hold the line with weapons only) and Mission mode, which includes 18 missions, with each mission offering different challenges.
Single player is as much fun as co-op. Just have in mind that if you want to play with random people there aren't as many, but, (depending on the time of the day) if you create a game, someone will eventually join you. Note that you don't have to wait for a person to join you, in order to start the game - the game starts regardless and even if no one joins, you can continue to play by yourself.
On top of all that the soundtrack is what completes this little masterpiece. Because Nation Red is definitely a hidden gem, and for the price tag of 2€ it's a steal.

The combat (which is the entirety of the game) is a bit janky, but not horrible. You start with a gun that will very shortly be replaced by something else. If you can change between multiple weapons, I never discovered how, so watch out you don't accidentally pick up an axe and replace your machinegun. There are classes that don't differ from each other much, and you can level up and get skills, but I couldn't take the time to read through and choose one during combat!!
Overall not great, but only $2 as its full price. If you wait for it to go 50% off, and play with a friend or 3, then it might be worthwhile.

Nation Red is an arcade shooter that adds some variety to the genre thanks to it's perk system. Shooting mechanics are standard for a top down shooter. Movement is a little more nuanced, with your speed decreasing when walking backwards, as well as a dodge/roll mechanic that isn't very unique but adds some maneuverability. Enemies are almost all cannon fodder, with an occasional boss zombie or exploding zombie. There is a fair bit of variety in the weapons department, but you quickly find that there are a select few great weapons, and a lot of okay ones. The perks system involves a wide range of possible upgrades that you get to use to build a unique character each game. In practice, most perks are at least decent, so they can begin to feel pretty similar once you get farther into the game. For a $2 game, this is pretty solid value for fans of arcade style top-down shooters.
