It is worth doing part 2 of this game, because there is potential and there is something to develop the plot.

there's a fair amount of clunkyness combat wise but honestly it's not that hard to get used to, (if you're playing on keyboard and mouse i highly suggest getting a controller) even the odd bug when launching an enemy into the stratosphere can be amusing. It's a beautifully designed game aesthetic wise and I absolutely adore the art style and design choices. Anyway I'd definitely recommend buying this game if you're as much of a game art nerd as i am and i'd probably recommend it if you like souls games. 8/10

It starts without any explanation or an intro and you find yourself into a tutorial.
This game just like the souls games, the story is given very slowly. Pretty good graphics and nice areas even though the entire map and wolrd is kinda small and you can explore it completly pretty fast. You have 5 different gameplay choices by unlocking and choosing a body/shell, that you can change it throughout the game.
Until you get used to it, you are kinda going blind, cause there is not really guidance. A nice thing was the ability called harden, and i a new mechanism that is fresh, you can turn yourself into stone, take no damage from the next attack and fill while in this stasis your stamina bar.
The game took me around 9 hours to beat ( i think it took me that much, cause i search the entire world and saw the 2 different endings of the game). To be honest i felt the game kinda empty and without a core/soul and kinda easy to beat.
Lastly, i want to say that maybe i wouldnt be so negative about some things about Mortal shell if i havent play elden ring before that.

Το Mortal Shell πρόκειται για ένα souls-like τίτλο από την εταιρεία Cold Symmetry.

Gothic Art in this game is beautiful, the game creates a gloomy atmosphere and does a great job
The Souls-like combat is good too,Rotting Christ being played during boss fights is a nice bonus fits the game perfectly, only complaint i have is that the game is short even though Virtuous cycle DLC adds some replayability also the weapons sometimes feel too strong against bosses when you finally upgrade them alot
Still worth playing if you are looking for something unique out of the souls-like games

If you like souls-like games and you want to experience the same gameplay but in a slightly different version, get this game. However, it does feel like a copy of Dark Souls in its mysterious lore and hard gameplay, but it lacks the magic and adventurous wonder of the games it's trying to copy.
Pros:
- Graphics are very good-looking
- Animations are very well made (especially compared to DS)
- Music and voice acting is good
- It's challenging
- Creative monster design
Cons:
- Tries too hard to be DS, at times
- Very confusing map layout and objectives
- Performance is not the best
On this last topic is why I'm giving it a thumbs down. I started liking it and it kept me entertained for some hours. My main concern until then was that the map layout felt confusing and I didn't really know what my objective was (at all), but I was still enjoying the game and getting the hang of defeating the monsters. BUT I eventually hit one section of the game where everything is dark and suddenly my frame rates plummeted to near 1-5 fps--it became literally unplayable. Tried walking around a bit, reloading the scenario (by talking to the main NPC) and even restarting the game, but my frames would always drop near certain areas. Very frustrating to spend all those hours getting to know its mechanics to suddenly hit a wall that is not even related to its gameplay.

At the core of every soulslike is the combat. If you take the challenging but fair, weighty but fluid combat of Dark Souls and make it unnecessarily cumbersome and janky, I don't need to put much time in to tell it isn't a good soulslike. There are loads of reviews criticising the game for other issues but I don't think any of those matter as much as the combat. If the combat was better I could say this game is worth it, despite the other issues. It's little things like the combo input queue taking ages to reset, often leading to the game throwing out the wrong attacks, the stamina taking ages to start recharging, even if it's half-full, making most fights a staring contest while you wait to be able to attack again, and your character's movement feeling like you're locked to the X/Y Axis and slowing to a crawl when locked on to anything (Why???) that really make the game gross to play. Dark Souls 1, an 11 year old game, is the bar to pass, but Dark Souls 2 feels better to play than this. The harden mechanic, parrying and dodging feel fine, but they couldn't even get the basics down.

-Graphics are great
-Game is only difficult at the beginning, once you get quenching acid and upgrade your weapons it becomes much easier
-Not very many bosses
-The harden mechanic is pretty cool
I would say get it on sale since $30 is a bit steep for around 13 hours of gameplay and like 4 bosses, but it is worth playing.

And my favourite part whenever you pick a loot always enemy horde spawns around you. After one or two times it's just kill the all excitement. I mean the point of a souls like game is the unpredictability which this game can not achieve.
My save suddenly got deleted after returning this game for a some time. I started a new game then Steam Cloud suggested me to take back my old save. I accepted and launched the game. I used restore save feature and got my save back.
But problem is game confused as hell. The things I've done on previous save applied to the newly restored save even though both are unrelated. For example in ice temple map, I killed the boss and returned to base. But now in this restored save level changed as if I killed boss and not. What I mean after killing the boss map gets dark and new enemies spawn.
In my newly restored save, map is dark, but also all enemies on the map or more of them (enemies before killing the boss and after killing the boss both are present). You might say what's the problem you can kill them. Well, it turns out game blocks all possible paths to get to that boss fight. In order to complete the game I need to kill him and get an item from him. But it seems there's now way to achieve that.
If game in an early access stage I would tolerate this, but it's not and this kind of bug is unacceptable because it prevents me to finish the game.
Mortal shell is so hard trying to be a souls like game but ends up being as a boring and easy game.

After finishing the game in just over 8 hours, you can tell the developers were more focused on the visuals then the bosses and combat. Not saying its particularly bad but it does feel unfinished and janky at times. Some moves from bosses don't feel like attacks or feel lackluster. Usually the final bosses are climactic battles meant to test everything you've learned throughout the game (like Sekiro's final boss Isshin or dark souls 3's lord of cinder) but mortal shell's final boss just runs away most of the fight. The playable characters and their skill tree's are interesting and fun for the most part. Overall if you're looking for a souls game to play before Elden Ring and you don't mind jank animations from bosses then give it a try.

It may feel quite clunky at the start before you get the hang of the harden ability mechanic. But once you do, it becomes a very enjoyable game that has quite a bit of depth with the different Shells that the character can possess. The icing on the cake for me is also the fact that your abilities change depending on what weapons you have equipped, and they all feel useful and unique in their own right with some very cool effects!
The Virtuous Cycle DLC also adds a lot of replayability, which is a separate part of the game that turns it into a rougelike. You play through the different areas of the main game, but with a twist! You get stat buffs and special abilities/effects by interacting with pillars that are scattered around the world which will help you clear each area and the bosses that are at the end of them.
If you like souls-like games, I'll highly recommend this even at full price, especially if you get the DLC with it!

Review are quite mixed. Here is my 2 cents:
+Personally I enjoy the combat
+I have only just beaten the first boss after 7 hours as I'm clearly not a speed runner. So length seems fine.
+It is a lot more friendly to players than Sekiro
+It looks great
+It runs smooth
+Shells and Hardening are interesting concepts
-It doesn't have co-op or PvP
-The mechanics can be confusing (Just like any Souls game)
-Character Progression seems quite limited (no stat boosts like in DS, but there are skill unlocks for each skin)
+-It's weirdly addictive

this game is pretty amazing for something 15 people put together, it's obviously a little short but whats there does seem to meet a pretty high standard. the shell mechanic is quite cool, give a little replay-ability. cool spin on the souls formula. worth a buy if your looking for something to scratch the itch until elden ring releases, but keep your expectations in check and judge it for what it is, a cool concept with an indie dev team behind it.

The first three hours, I didn't really understand what I should do or where to go, which is always good for me, it was funny and a really challenging experience I always appreciate.
I also admit it's a bit short experience and I would have liked more variety of enemies, story and there were two final or area bosses, I definitely didn't like.
The price it's also good, so for all these reasons, more positive than negative, I could say it's worth it.

This game feels like Dark Souls in some elements, but IMO is like a second cousin to the series. It's different but a good kind of different. Something that a Souls Fan could appreciate.
Short and sweet. Has quite a learning curve. If it's on sale, absolutely worth the buy. Haven't tried the DLC yet.
I'd love to see more content from this company. Maybe make a similar game that has the capability to explore lore more as well as add more features and content.
Beat the game twice and still have not figured out parrying quite just yet. Still working on it.

1. It´s short! Only 20-25 h playtime. Let me tell you why this is great:
1.1. This game doesn't rot on my pile of shame!
1.2. I played it through and that's why i have a great core memory of it!
2. It has no open world! Let me tell you again why this is great:
2.1. It is neither filled with grindy side quests nor with emptiness!
2.2. There are not secrets everywhere, so you don't have to hit every wall for a secret treasure. And that is
why you can stand still and absorb the whole atmosphere
2.3. I prefer handmade map design with details and atmosphere, instead of loveless open worlds filled
with nothing and / or easter eggs behind every corner!
3. It's so atmospheric!
3.1. The unique design of the whole game comes straight out of a metal album!
3.2. The Sound is so Metal and so good. Every Voice Line is a pleasure to hear!
3.3. The text and dialogue are so dystopian and cryptic, and fit so well with the whole world!
but there are also downsides
1. The pathfinding of the A.I. sometimes stops
2. The attack pattern of the A.I. sometimes stops
3. Enemies sometimes spawn too late in the level
But if you are a Dark Souls fan you will love this game!
If you like Souls-Like games you will love this game!
If you are a Metalhead you will love this game!
If you like Singleplayer based Games, without an overload of content, you will love this game!

*Some part of the review might be seen as SPOILERS. Read at your own risk*
After 19 hours and 19 achievements (excluding DLC ones), I have explored literally every single corner in the game. There is so much potential that it hurts to see how it’s just ignored and unused.
The world:
You start in a swamp (Fallgrim), which is the centre of the entire game. The swamp is really vast, but a lot of it leaves an empty feeling. You continuously fight the same mobs throughout the swamp, and there isn’t really anything hidden anywhere. It serves more as a gateway to the other worlds around it. However, once you spawn you don’t know this, so you fight your way through mobs and explore, just to feel next to no progress at all. Later on, Fallgrim becomes nothing but a place you just run through.
The exact same feeling of exploring and returning emptyhanded happens in the Eternal Narthex. You walk out of what seems to be a great hall, and you look upon this intriguing, obsidian world, and you’re ready to explore, just to find… nothing at all. There are massive areas without any mobs or hidden loot, just empty ground. Once you move on to the Dim Gate, you find yourself in this strange architecture, with a few hidden paths. Unfortunately, you end up being stuck on platforms if you follow these hidden paths (like the platform to retrieve the Baguette or the Quenching Acid). Here you’re forced to use the Untarnished Mask, if you want to keep your Tar that is. If you’re out of Untarnished Mask’s, you have to either; sacrifice your Tar by committing suicide or your Glimpse by using a Tarnished Mask.
It also goes for the Enshrined Sanctum, which is another beautiful location. You look down into the solidly frozen pathway, and you’re ready to explore. A few moments and mobs later, you already find yourself in the bottom of the pit, entering Martyr’s Altar, and you wonder where all the exciting exploring is.
After completing any area, and retrieving a gland, the world changes drastically while this item is in your possession. This is a nice feature the first time, but it gets very old very quickly. You return to Fallgrim, which is now The Mist, and you’re excited to see what inhabitants this place now. The mobs have turned into… Nocteserper. One kind of monster. So the second time you return to The Mist, you just run through because there is nothing new to kill or new to explore. It just becomes an annoying hiccup. Sometimes the mobs aren’t even visible, they spawn on top of you, and that’s really bothersome. This is not only in The Mist, but also throughout the entire game.
Now when we’re talking about worlds, let’s talk about the bosses that you face in these worlds. They are simply too easy. I am reading that Mortal Shell is harder than this and that soulsborne title. It is not. I have completed DS3, including 27 hours of playtime on Nameless King alone. I have trouble with Amelia in Bloodborne, I have troubles early on in Sekiro… and I almost beat entire Mortal Shell without dying. I died less than 10 times in 19 hours of gameplay. All bosses besides of Hadern with Axatana (2 deaths) and The Unchained (4 deaths) was killed in my first try without any use of consumables. I would usually be out of any kind of healing items at the time I made it to the boss fight (I’d generally be out of healing in the entire game). They don’t have any real mechanics you want to study in the start of the fight, no one-shot combos (or hits), no… nothing really. They are just a bigger mob. It might be intentional, but when you draw inspiration from souls-games, then you automatically expect hard and brutal bosses. The biggest disappointment is Grisha, because you’ll encounter him four times in three different forms throughout the game. This is what makes Nioh annoying; same mobs, same locations, and you’re forced to fight through this.
On that note, let’s talk DLC. The Virtuous Cycle does not offer anything new to Mortal Shell. It does what Nioh does; same location, different “objective”, same mobs. It’s like a mini-game in the same world, in case you didn’t get tired of exploring it the first time. I am very happy that I got this for free, otherwise I’d really have been disappointed.
The game does a lot of things really well, such as the hardening ability. This is what distinguishes the combat from any other game I’ve ever played. It allows you to be incredibly aggressive, or really passive, get out of tight situations and so on. It is incredibly diverse, and my absolute favourite feature of the game. To top it off, the entire combat system is really well made. Yes, it does have a few 360 degree spin hits, but EVERY soulsgame has this. Especially Sekiro, where it’s so extreme it generally pisses me off. So, the combat in Mortal Shell is very well made. Only downside of the combat is the Kick. I tried to kick multiple enemies off of ledges, and it just doesn’t happen. They mostly hit an invisible wall and stay on the ledge. It’s very hard to get a Spartan Kick, unless you try to achieve it in the specific places where it was designed for it.
Speaking of combat, the weapons have really unique animations and styles, enhancing the combat experience a lot. Especially moves like the heavy attack flip of the Hallowed Sword, or the spin with Axatana. However, I’d have liked to see many more weapons with more of these unique styles.
Another thing it does well is the Shell-system, and it’s tree upgrades. This allows you to upgrade your characters as you desire, and use them in different situations, and actually create a huge variety of builds. Unfortunately, like everything else in the game, it falls short. Since the Tar droprate is so low, you’re maxing your characters shell and weapon by the time you’re about to fight the last boss. You don’t really get to use it’s full potential to defeat harder enemies which would’ve been extremely hard otherwise.
It’s not only the Shell-system which is really amazing but falls short. Same goes for the Familiarity system. The whole idea of using items to get more familiar with them, so you unlock better benefits is extremely clever. But since the world is so small and doesn’t encourage exploring, the Familiarity system doesn’t unlock its full potential either, which is another great shame.
The music throughout the game was right down my alley. All the bosses have amazing soundtracks, and so does the lutes, which is also a cool and unique feature to this game.
In essence, despite the really amazing features of the game, which makes it super unique, there are just too many flaws which are big enough to leave you dissatisfied… almost depressed even. The game has the potential to be so much more than it is, but it ends up leaving you feeling like a child who thinks they’re going to Disneyland, just to end up on a coin operated ride outside the local supermarket.
For those who’re defending Cold Symmetry, saying it’s a small indie company and therefore we shouldn’t be harsh on them and expect more than what we’ve received. They aren’t FromSoftware, what can we expect. Hollow Knight and Salt and Sanctuary are also created by indie game developers, whose teams are significantly smaller and yet their game has so much more substance.
If Cold Symmetry decides to make Mortal Shells 2 (which I really hope), I’d like for them to keep these things in mind, so we as fans aren’t being let down twice. The unique features are too good to put on the shelves already; they just need a lot more passion and development.
