I love the artstyle and the concept of everything the developers did so far. There is so much Detail and Love in the smallest things and i really appriciate it.
Sadly i still cannot recommend it.
To me, there is just a lot that still needs work and improvement.
The fighting system is abysmall and killed the fun for me completly.
While in combat it often happend to me that my character got stuck between two objects and there was no escaping anymore. I wish that the character was able to jump to get a better flow in movement. This would also help improve the walking flow in general because often you have to walk far around obstacles due to the 2D nature of the game. Just let me jump over the fence.
The Quest system is nice, but there are quests in this game that are timelocked and there is no indication for it whatsoever. You just get notifications that the quests has failed while your playing, not even knowing the quest had a timer in the first place.
All in all i would love to give this game a positiv review at some point when those things are worked on and improved.

It plays like a mix of Stardew Valley and Don't Starve. You have a beautiful cozy world, farm, crops, chickens, animals, a city filled with residents... And then you get attacked by a werewolf. Or a bandit. Or a swamp hag.
However, the combat is clunky, resource respawn is a drag, game tends to lag sometimes... It has issues.
Positive review because:
- it's being actively developed
- there's enough gameplay to last you tens of hours, if not more
- the world is beautiful

Combat was definitely painful at first. But with time and practice, and better gear, learning enemy movements and improving your timing makes it much more satisfying. There's a great sense of progression as you start mastering the mechanics.
Overall, Mirthwood blends relaxing gameplay with engaging adventure really well, and it's one of those games that's hard to put down once you get into the rhythm.

The idea of using skills to level them is not new, but there is a twist in Mirthwood in that at levels 3, 6 and 9 of skill trees you unlock cards that can be used to give passive bonuses, across farming, survival, melee, archery, crafting or social skills. Unlocking new skill slots is by way of Fable Feathers which are spread across the game world, motivating the player to explore the map and its many biomes. The kicker is you can have a maximum of 5 bonuses active at any one time, meaning you have total freedom to build a character and play however you want.
The game world is chock full of resources to collect which are needed to upgrade tools, weapons, armor and farm equipment, with a clear upgrade path from copper, iron, steel, through to silver and finally to gold. Some areas in the game world locked behind story progression and others require the player to repair items (bridges/boats) or upgrade tools to remove obstacles.
There is a good variety of enemies spread across the game world, from bandits, wolves, bears to sithlurkers, werewolves, spriggans and the occasional hag. Enemies broadly have similar attack patterns and move sets and don’t get stronger as you progress the main story. Combat is a mixed bag, with melee being very janky due to limited combat moves and archery can be frustrating if you don’t aim your shots just right. Upgrading combat skills does feel meaningful but levelling them to the max level does take a very long time.
Quests are pointless and mainly involve fetching or killing things, and the main quest ends a little suddenly. The level of information given to the player when receiving a quest is very limited and there is no indication of what rewards will be offered (if any at all). There is a placeholder morality and reputation system in the game, but there aren’t negative consequences for making bad choices or stealing items.
Yes it's a bit rough around the edges, but has a dedicated and active development team who provide regular updates to the community. If you enjoy farming games, exploration games or medieval games, I recommend you give Mirthwood a go.

I bought Mirthwood once the marriage update was released and I genuinely haven't been able to put it down. I can see myself sinking many many hours into this game, and as of writing have already completed 39 hours. The fact that this game is visually and audibly stunning is an added bonus. I've been playing on steamdeck and there have been hiccups (there's a bit of lag occasionally, the bow is pretty much non-useable), however it seems the developers are active with keeping on top of the game and bringing updates. The world is very big, which is great as someone who loves exploration. You won't run out of things to do - between the main storyline, side quests, resource hunting and exploration, forming relationships with the NPCs and house/farm customisation- it's hit the nail on the head for keeping the player hooked. The balance of the time it takes to make money and upgrade tools is just right, you don't feel hindered or rushed but equally it doesn't just get handed to you. Unlike other farming sims, I really don't feel a time pressure with the days and the day lengths feel comfortable. I also don't feel like I've wasted time if I sleep to the next day. I also want to thank the devs for allowing a manual and auto save feature!! This has honestly been one of the best things, because it means I don't have to cut my day short because I want to save & quit the game. I feel as though the quality of life features are there which honestly makes such a difference when comparing to other games. This to me is the ultimate cosy game. I love the fact that there's combat which isn't just super simple or easy, it is challenging but not in a way that puts you off. Honestly, I really hope the devs keep bringing out updates and adding quests and possibly add multiplayer later down the line, because this is honestly one of the best games i've played. I would absolutely recommend this game to anyone.
