Mini ninjas
Action game from 2009.
Mini Ninjas is a game that combines furious action with exploration missions to provide a gaming experience that is accessible to a wide audience. It is an action adventure with the focus on giving the player the greatest possible freedom to explore and contains enough game depth to conquer the game in a variety of ways.
This is the promotional text for the game on Steam.
I started exploring before I did anything else. Go to the river and jump in there ..... When have you ever ridden whitewater in a hat?
You are alone or as a group as a little ninja on your way through a world full of dangers.
Look forward to a ninja spectacle like no other.
So small and yet a real ninja: the young Hiro has not yet finished his training as a shadow warrior, but when the evil wizard Ashida invades the peaceful land with his samurai hordes, all hope rests on his slender shoulders. Together with his friends Futo, Suzume, Tora, Shun and Kunoichi, he sets out to put a stop to the hustle and bustle.
You can control the six different ninjas and put them together as a group as you need it in the game.
With Mini Ninjas, the Hitman developers from Io Interactive are fulfilling a childhood dream: likeable heroes whiz through beautifully drawn and lovingly animated 3D worlds, and even the most evil darkling turns back into a cuddly animal after a few bloodless blows, which the hero from then on stands by with his skills.
The setting is excellent and the landscape and your immediate surroundings are kept simple but very nicely done.
The intro is so good, there is a lot of love in it.
I almost had a permanent grin on my face, so cute.
The story is primarily about the importance of friendships to keep evil from taking over the world.
Kids will especially like the simple cartoon look, but aren't we all kids?
So cute, clear recommendation.

Gameplay:
+ fun, relaxing open world gameplay
+ stealth can be fun
+ multiple characters with their own styles and benefits
- no multiplayer or co-op of any kind
+ good amount of collectibles for replayability
- relatively short campaign
- hard difficulty is not that hard (for more seasoned gamers)
Graphics/sound:
+ cute stylized look
+ runs well
+ great sound, especially with headphones
- as mentioned in other comments, there is a weird stuttering that occurs when trying to find other inputs. Thankfully with my laptop, I turned off my Bluetooth keyboard and disconnected my mouse, and I could play with my controller without issues. But apparently there are cases where it's built into the hardware and can't be disabled.
Overall: it's a fun family-friendly game to play. It may not have a lot to offer for seasoned gamers, but it'll still be satisfying to play. Younger kids will definitely love it.

Both my daughter Ariadne (7 year old then) and I have played and finished Mini Ninjas two years ago while my 7 year old son Calchas has given it a wholehearted try. We have been absolutely fond of the adorable ninja crew and their sneaky tricks; Mini Ninjas is a game of friendship and camaraderie.

▶️Introduction
????Positive aspects | ????Negative aspects |
---|---|
Nice looking artstyle. | No sound in game. Needs a 3rd Party program, |
Unique abilities. | Unique yet sadly misused. |
This review contains no spoilers.
Mini Ninjas is a cartooney, ninja-based game. By ninja based I mean the usual combat, stealth, and ability/possession powers. The game’s main point of emphasis is to give the player a wide variety of possible ways to reach his goal.

????Gameplay
There will be no gameplay footage as I am currently without any type of internet connection.
Combat & Exploration
The combat is pretty simple especially after the tutorial that teaches you the basic ninja attacks. The entire attack aspect of the game is extremely basic which makes the game a very easy learning experience. Evading or blocking the attacks in straightforward, special abilities do work with the usual chakra mechanics where you earn the points after you have eliminated an enemy. After maxing the chakra bar out you can easily use the special attack.
Stealth should play in theory a major role but it doesn’t. I tried to play while strictly using stealth but it just wasn’t as effective as going in loud. This is in my opinion wasted potential.
Boss Fights can be challenging at first but after getting the hang of it with experience and the classic usefulness of the hint boxes you will sadly get bored quickly with these fights.
Exploration is another area with wasted potential. You get these big Sniper Elite-styled maps that truly feel huge and full of mystery, but in reality, you get a shallow map that does not reward you for the exploration part as you will waste your time on some minor potions that will be forgotten in your inventory. The entire exploration thing only makes sense if you so decide to 100% this game, or enjoy walking around the attractive-looking environments.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2554985278
Animal Possession & Multiple playable characters
Animal Possession is a weird ability that does not get used correctly within the game. Nine out of ten times you will only find a rabbit and possess it. What ability does the rabbit have? None, the entire value of that is the fact that the enemies do not recognize you, but other than that it is just a gimmick. The real value comes when you find a bear and possess him, as that grants you the ability to attack. Keep in mind that you cannot recover any health when you’re an animal and you will have to jump out of the animal once your health gets low. After freeing an animal it is pretty hard to find a bear again which renders this ability useless.
Character selection allows you to choose between multiple other characters with different fighting styles and abilities. You are required to progress through the story to collect every fighter. After completing that you have multiple options as far as fighting styles go.
????Story
There isn’t much of a story in this game. The entire plot is explained in the intro when you start the game or leave the Menu be at standby until it starts playing that intro. I will have to say that most of the characters are memorable simply because most of them play a huge role within the game.
????Graphics / Audio
The game makes use of the well-established Glacier engine which was used up until Hitman: Blood Money.

In Game
I was running the game on Maxed out settings at 1080p at around 60fps.
Minimum framerate: 54.6 FPS
Maximum framerate: 55.7 FPS

⚖️Conclusion
Mini Ninjas is an average game with so much wasted potential. When I heard that IO Interactive were the developers of this game, I was sure that this would be amazing but, I was proven wrong. Some areas did not get worked on enough, for example, the stealth ability and some of the other aspects. The game is still a fun experience but with all of the issues that I mentioned previously, I can barely recommend it on sale, at least 50% off.

The game has a unique style which looks great on any setting, so you low-spec users out there will still enjoy playing this one. The soundtrack is especially nice, with all this very calming, zen-like music quickly switching to a frantic war drum beat during combat. The enemies have strange squeaky voices, much like the characters in Magicka, which only adds to the charm. The controls are well laid-out, and all combine to make exploring and combat a very enjoyable experience.
The one negative I have to mention about Mini Ninjas would be the strange every four to five second micro-stuttering I’ve always encountered while playing. Apparently the game doesn’t like USB devices - usually it’s a connected camera or something non-essential one can unplug and this goes away, but in my case it’s the keyboard. Not something game-breaking really, but it is a little irritating at times.
The story is quite long, clocking in at roughly 15 hours for most users. No achievements this time around though, sadly. Easy recommend, especially for the steep discount it regularly goes on sale for.

On criticism is that the game can be quite easy. It is very generous with health restoring items in most parts of the game. I also found that the boss fights rely too much on quick timer events.

A very fun game I played back in high school and finally finished now, Mini Ninjas is an adventure game where you play as one of six characters each with their own unique set of skills to get the job done. Japanese inspired graphics and design this game is a must play if you love the stories and lore of ninjas. You start with Hiro, a ninja on a journey to stop the evil warlord Ashida. Your friends that help you in your journey is Futo - the big loyal guy, Kunoichi, the spear wielding lady, Shun the archer, Suzume the flute wielder and Tora who thinks he is a tiger with his claw weapons. There are some collectables to collect along the way - Jizo statues, anemones and spells. Its a great game to play, give it a go should you feel the need for awesome ninja action!
8/10
You get given a bowl-shaped hat at the start of the game, and it's your shield against normal arrows, essentially. And it doubles as a Cool Boat.

Information / Review English
Mini Ninjas is an Action adventure developed by IO Interactive.
Gameplay / Story
The plot briefly addressed: A powerful, latently megalomaniac and definitely evil samurai warlord with his sinister plans for world domination not only subjugated almost the entire Far Eastern empire, but also caused natural disasters through his magical interventions. In response to this, the good ninja master sent his best warriors into the race against the warlord, but in vain, because none of them was ever seen again. The last hope for the expulsion of the warlord and for a better world lies in the hands of the young but best, because most talented, ninja apprentice Hiro and his friends. It is up to them to free the animals, which have been transformed into samurai fighters by evil magic, through 17 worlds and finally to drive away the evil samurai ruler. Due to the atmospheric density, which is achieved in particular through a wealth of technical details in terms of sound and image, all 17, sometimes smaller and sometimes larger, levels are gripping and captivating, so that you almost automatically stay on the ball. And although the story is really badly neglected over time, one is still excited to see what kind of world or what kind of intermediate opponent will be presented next. There is a very high probability that you will hardly put “Mini Ninjas” aside after an hour or two, even if you, as an experienced player, are bothered by the relatively low-threshold difficulty level. Although this offers two different levels, they are ultimately not noticeably different. In spite of all this, even as a permanent gamer you will have to spend at least two to three full days to play the game through once.
Pro
+ charming adventure
+ Cartoon look
+ 5 playable characters
+ atmospheric soundscape
+ customizable quick menu
+ Collecting stimuli
Contra
- hardly any playful challenges
- linear character development
Conclusion
Mini Ninjas offers you a charming adventure, which scores with its own way.
Information / Review Deutsch

True, its simple, short and made for kids, but in that lies a beautiful rendition of Eastern Landscapes, Music, and a Journey that not many other games had replicated since. Every level is different in its artistic approach, from lush forests, to cold mountainous canyons, and dark hills alit by starlight, and fire, all of which contribute to an immersion that's simply awesome. The writing is pretty strong too, and although its rather simple, there is a certain maturity of its approach that I have still found enjoyment in.
Beautiful, simply beautiful, and the gameplay really starts to pick up towards the latter half. Its just a shame there never was a sequel to continue the build. A bit of Prince of Persia, a bit of Zelda, and a bit of Kung Fu Panda is what you get, when you play the game, and such a combination is its strength. You really do feel that you are on a great trek across a dangerous land, that is also beautiful and mysterious.
If you have not played it, do yourself a favour and buy it. Its practically free when its on a discount, and you won't regret it!
Due note, you need to download a sound fix to get the game working, and I had to unplug my keyboard for the micro-stutters to stop. Both of these are really easy to do, and if you go to the Community Hub, there's a special page on how to do these.

Ogenki desu ka, Hiro?
Sorry, I don't speak Japanese. But many of the characters do in this. Especially when performing Kuji, the magic in game that only Hiro can use.
Each character uses Ki, a sort of stamina and also has access to power attacks denoted by the red circles. Enemies drop these to recharge.
There are six playable characters that sort of live inside Hiro. You can switch in between them at any time to take control.
- Hiro: The main character, skilled with a sword. Can perform Kuji magic found in hidden shrines throughout the game.
- Suzume: She uses a flute and her power attack lulls enemies to sleep with her playing. Or, at the very least, stuns them briefly. Great against fast moving targets that otherwise would prove quite challenging.
- Futo: Not your typical sort of Ninja—he's a big, clumsy oaf, maybe not in so many words but he's great for taking down larger enemies.
- Tora: He believes he is a tiger... And has claws like Vega from Street Fighter. He also runs pretty fast.
- Kunoichi: She wields a spear which has great reach for those pesky samurai that Hiro can't reach with his sword.
- Shun: He is an Archer. A bit rambunctious for a ninja, his ledge grab stance is amazing. He flips himself upside down and grabs hold with his legs such that he can still fire arrows. His power attack is an explosive fired from his bow.

I'm not a big fan of realistic visuals as they almost never age well.
Luckily for Mini Ninjas that isn't the case. While perhaps not the most aesthetically pleasing game, it's got a lot of character to the environment and overall world feel that I really enjoy.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2178550543
The world itself is not open-world, but rather an assortment of various locations connected by 'levels'. A mildly archaic design by any modern standards. But it suits the game well. Though, were there ever to be a full-fledged sequel it'd be great to see a fully realized open-world game in this style.
Imagine if you could make your own ninja!
Mini Ninjas has leveling, it even has a stat sheet you can look at. And upon each level, gained by collecting XP from fallen enemies or freeing animals from cages, you're given either the ability to hit more enemies with your power attack (a sort of marked auto-kill ability, similar to Hitman or later Splinter Cell games but appropriate for those not too keen on violence. It's from IO interactive after all.) or simply more health or ki energy. I think it'd be really neat to see something where you could choose what to level into for your characters.
Story wise, it's pretty strait forward. Though there was a TV show spawned from this game. The story is semi-dark in tone but still in-line with being kid friendly. When you kill enemies, they turn into cute little animals. The Samurai Warlord that is the antagonist is very 'Dr. Robotnik' in this regard. However the samurai do burn down villages and put the other characters and animals in cages. So it's not hyper childish.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2178550588
THE GIST:
It's a great game for all ages. You're able to craft potions using recipes using things found in the environment. You can explore the maps to search for hidden shrines—it's got collectibles. You can stealth through areas or fight your way through. And the combat, while simple, isn't boring and keeps your attention with various enemy types and ways to take them on. All and all, it's a fantastic and relatively overlooked game and still holds up today.
Zitat:
If you've read this far, consider following my curation — Station Argus
It'd be real cool to see a more robust, open-world game with more character customization. Sure, that might sound generic. And I'd agree. But it'd be awesome.
