Mind Scanners asks the question of whether you’re willing to encroach on free will and identity in order to earn your own upkeep. You play an ambassador for a totalitarian regime, sussing out unfit citizens, dissidents and contrarians -- deciding their fate in society.

Narratively there’s a lot going on. Not only do you need to evaluate people’s minds in unethical ways, living with the ramifications of your own broken justifications. You also need to save your daughter from the same government you’re working for.

It sounds way more exciting on paper than it does in play though. The gameplay itself is mostly about visiting citizens, exposing them for rorschach tests and questionnaires. And as soon as you smell foul play (read: opinions and free will), launch into a series of monotonous mini games to exterminate parts of their personality.

Sadly, it gets bland almost immediately, which is a real shame. I loved Paper’s Please, and Mind Scanners is pretty adjacent to that one. At least in theory. But where the former is a game about observation and deduction, injecting narrative into the gameplay, the latter seems to be content with just an array of anemic challenges, testing your reaction and timing.

Thumbs down for me.

I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS GAME.
When I finished Valhala, I ended up with a bartending hobby. Wonder what I will do after this one :D

The retro mechanics of all the instruments; the clicks, the wires, the sound and feels? - you did such a fantastic job at making it an amazing experience, guys. It's like playing doctor as a kid but times 1000. I was gasping and worrying and stressing, my heart was racing as I tried with all my might to save the personalities of my patients.

This game ticked all the boxes for me. It kept me engaged, but also able to control the pace. It was really challenging but somehow I danced on the sweet spot of almost not making it! but saving the day ^^ the writing is fantastic, the stories have all the shades between zebra stripes. I wish I could erase my memory and play it again without knowing anything, honestly :D

10/10
Play this game.
If you are an empathetic person and like psychology, you simply must play it.

You are a mindscanner and your job is to diagnose patient's to determine their sanity, what that sanity is, and treat it with various machines that correspond to certain illness types. The machines are like short timed mini games. You treat people daily and can choose to develop machines that destroy their being or help them keep their personality.

I enjoyed the creepy imagery and simplicity of the style. The strange dialogue from insane patients was really fun. I got six hours out of one play through and decided to align with the government. I completely ignored any kind of rebellion tasks; the replay value is there.

I love this kind of game, in the vein of Papers Please, Death and Taxes, Strange Horticulture and Do Not Feed the Monkeys. I like interactive fiction, dystopian hellscapes, psychological horror, cyberpunk and science fiction.

I was entirely disinterested in this game within the first 10 minutes. Poor UI, simple but confusing minigames, grating soundscape, bad writing. This game had it all. If the game was half the price I might have considered plowing through these issues. At $17, it's not worth the pain.

I’m very much on the fence on whether or not to recommend this game. After 4.7 hours I have completed one full playthrough and while I enjoyed the experience, I was also ready for it to end.

This game has been compared to Papers Please, and in many ways is similar. You are a government employee of a repressed society where compliance is mandatory and insubordination is heavily punished. Your job as “mind scanner” is to investigate people who have been reported for various behavioural changes and must determine if they are “sane” or “insane.” If deemed insane you must use various devices to treat their insanity until they are deemed cured. Successfully treat your patient and you will get paid for it. Make the wrong call and you will be fined.

Just like Papers Please you must pay a daily maintenance fee and if you run out of money it’s game over. Just like Papers Please you can either do your job diligently or choose to join a resistance movement to bring down the government. I’ve only unlocked two endings but it seems like there are about nine different endings depending on the decisions you make.

What I enjoyed the most about Mind Scanners was the quality of writing in your interactions with patients. It was really fun to try to diagnose their condition and decide how you want to deal with them. Some of the outcomes were quite amusing.

Unfortunately what really dragged the game down for me was the actual treatment process, and in my opinion this is what really holds the game back compared to Papers Please. What made Papers Please such an amazing game for me was that all of the tasks you were doing were based on real world concepts eg imposter detection, document fraud detection etc. and it made them really fun. However the way you treat patients in Mind Scanners is through a series of arbitrary mini games that aren’t particularly fun. Because the majority of the game time is spent doing these mini games, it really started to get tedious by the end. I understand it’s much more difficult to equate psychiatric treatment methods into a video game than looking at passports is, but I think the developers needed to find a different way.

Overall I enjoyed the game and would like to explore it more to find some different endings, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as Papers Please.

I'm a big fan of PP, so I'm quite used to autonomy and monotony etc. However this game is just tedious. I have no interest in seeing what's supposed to happen next. The stories are uninteresting, I feel no moral obligation to any of them, and the bit that frustrates me the most is that the minigames are so ambiguous that I get them wrong with zero idea or understanding of how I got it wrong. There is zero tutorial so you will spend the first 15 or so minutes just clicking around with no idea what you're doing, and absolutely no understanding of what you're doing wrong. I got locked out of a massive story line simply because I didn't understand how to spend points to recuperate personality.

I really wanted to like this game, I've given it a few goes and I've spent a decent amount of time on it, but honestly I just have zero desire to continue playing.

Amazing game, I bought it on an impulse and it surprised me, its narrative, art style, music, gameplay, plot, its all so interesting and well made and you can see how much love the developers put into it.

They keep updating it with extras and fixes even tho they're busy working on console ports!!

I'll probably replay it one of these days and get a different ending and try the new things. This game is worth it's asking price, and if you see it on sale dont hesitate because you'll realise it was worth every cent.

Mind Scanners is a fun and enjoyable game. It has a lot of interesting interactions with the people you encounter within the game. The gadgets are fun, but you really have to be strategic when using each one. By that, I mean you have to watch out for the patient's stress & personality levels while ensuring that you can clear out as many insanity points in one go. Although the story is well-put together, some of the endings could've been better. Hopefully, there's a possible expansion/DLC in the future. For the Normality and the Mind!

Happened across this game one day by chance, and I'm really glad I did! Love this game, the actual gameplay is really unique and a lot of fun! Not like anything else I've played, love these types of management games with a lot of replayability. Can't wait to keep playing for achievements and all the endings! I do think that it took me a little while to pick up on how to actually play lol it's not TOTALLY clear in the beginning, you're more or less just thrown into it, but honestly it's not too hard to figure out with trial and error imo. I've played for only about 4 or so hours so far and I'd say I've pretty much figured it out, so for me that isn't much of an issue. A fun game, definitely takes a bit of playing and starting over to get a good handle on mechanics, but unlike some other people in the reviews, I don't think that it's that difficult lol. Also love the unique style and sound design!

Highly recommend this game. To me it seems to be a commentary on the way mental health is highly misunderstood and misrepresented in real life. I will say, as far as gameplay goes, it can get a bit repetitive at times with repeating the same tasks, and I'm not sure if I'd play it again for a different ending. Then again, I don't want to be too harsh with my criticism because it's a beautiful game with a powerful message and was developed by an incredibly small team. Games like these are the reason I try stick to indie developers.

You'll probably see a lot of comparison between this game and Papers Please. I think that's not a very accurate comparison as the two games may have the same themes or spirit but the game-play is different enough to make them distinct. Now that that's out of the way, let's have a look at the game mechanics.

In a dystopian future city, make your living as a Minds Scanner, a type of doctor that goes between citizens deemed odd or crazy. Using the name-sake of your job, diagnose them as either insane and attempt to help them recover to sanity... or don't. You see, the city officials don't really care whether your methods of curing the citizens leave them as personality-empty husks or as truly happy, healthy individuals; you get paid the same amount either way.

Uncover the insanity types afflicting the citizens and, using your ever growing tool-kit of curative devices, get rid of them. But don't make too many mistakes or the patient's stress will rise and interrupt the treatment. Do a good enough job and some patients may even reward you further by showing their gratitude in varying ways.

To be frank, the game-play mechanics of treating your patients are a little shallow. You will develop tools to be able to further treat patients and each subsequent patient will be more and more difficult to treat, but despite the variety of tools at your disposal the fact remains that they are all still very similar and using them over and over gets repetitive. I feel like this could be avoided somehow by making the treatments a little more complex or perhaps by allowing a broader range of tools. Each tool currently only deals with one type of insanity (destroying 3 units worth of insanity of they are in a row on your patient) but I feel like if the tools would have had more options on them or the ability to upgrade them further (perhaps to destroy even more types of insanity or an additional bonus type) the game would have gained an element of strategy to it that isn't present currently. The developers however are at this time (16. Sept 2021) adding stuff to the game so perhaps further down the line this will be a feature.

Another potential shortcoming of the game is that when you interview patients, you get a string of questions with 3 answer possibilities. Answering correctly will proceed the diagnosis and answering incorrectly will set you back. This portion of the game could be greatly expanded on, perhaps with more complex mechanics, more answer possibilities, etc, etc.

My third and final critique of the game is that some of the tutorials are a little bit lacking. When purchasing a new tool f.ex you get a page which tells you sort of what it does but doesn't give you the ability to practice on it. This is a little frustrating when you are using the tool on a patient and are left a little uncertain how to operate your tools. It's a nit-pick for sure.

Despite that I do recommend the game for people who enjoy dystopian settings. You can, depending on your treatment methods, get involved in the rebels vs authorities struggle present in all such works of fiction... or don't. Perhaps you're content just scanning minds and earning your living that way.

If you don't agree with the price tag, at least add this one to your wishlist and grab it on sale. I sincerely hope that the developers will continue to tinker with it a little bit, perhaps expanding the selection of patients, tools or nuances here and there.

i really like this game!!! has a very similar vibe to papers please, but i think it builds on it in a really interesting way with all of the different puzzles you have to do while treating patients, as well as managing your time efficiently and making sure you don't erase your patients' personalities (if that's the route you're going for).
also, every time you start a new game the patients you get first are randomized, making for a slightly different experience every time!
i am a sucker for pixel graphics in indie games and this game did not disappoint! very charming and nice to look at.

Mind Scanners is an experience all its own. While the differing methods of using the tech available to you seems difficult at first, it very quickly becomes second nature, which makes the addition of traps such as the trauma bomb and the brain freezer a very welcome challenge (as well as a perfectly timed one in my second play-through.)

The thing I found particularly troublesome was how easy it is to lose track of the personality meter. This isn't a big problem according to the game, as The Structure still pays you whether you break the patients mind or not (which is actually an important story element) but I personally couldn't abide doing that, forcing me into a moral dilemma which caused me to restart the entire day whenever I noticed it had happened.

Also, I feel as though the choices given, Insane or Sane, didn't go into enough detail when deciding what was wrong with a given patient. If a given patient has a condition which would technically make them Insane, but that condition is doing no harm to them or others, or worse, the condition is actually improving their life, would that person not fall into a third category? Is a person whose implants are malfunctioning actually insane, or is that another situation entirely? Are the same methods which can repair the traumas of the brain also effective on machinery, or would that require another type of equipment? Perhaps if a sequel is made, this is something that can be addressed and expanded upon.

Overall, I loved Mind Scanners and I would most certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a good experience.

Interesting dystopian back story with multiple facets and conflicting agendas.
The simplistic interface and graphics are totally sufficient in telling the story and there are multiple arcs and endings and 3 difficulty settings, resulting into a high degree of replayability.

If you liked 'papers, please!' you are also going to enjoy this.
There are no real penalties for doing 'the right thing'

Some of the mini games can become frustrating and they take a lot of time but that's also the point.

This game looks a lot like 'Papers, Please'. It is a low res, 2D job simulator in which you use a bunch of tools to assess, judge, and process a series of people. Each person has their own little story, but largely the story of the game is decided by the choices you make *and* your skill at doing your job *well*.

It diverges from 'Papers, Please' in its gameplay. Rather than attempting to accurately deduce a binary approve/deny and being graded pass/fail, you are free to decide on each person's diagnosis of sane/insane, and the gameplay really begins with an insanity diagnosis. It is then your responsibility to 'cure' a person through a series of skill and strategy based tools, under the pressure of a ticking clock. Each tool is represented by a minigame. The minigames are all a little grotesque and ridiculous, and don't seem to have anything to do with real world mental health, but they range from fun to finicky, and are all challenging in unique ways.

This is where the game's ethical and narrative elements come into play. Do you avoid a challenging intervention in favour of an easier one that might do a patient harm? Do you take the extra time necessary to protect a patient's personality from being erased? Can you balance it all and still pay the rent?

Like 'Papers, Please', the game has multiple endings based on your choices, relationships, successes and failures. My biggest criticism is that a lot of the endings seem quite similar, but it still feels rewarding to complete the game in different ways following different sets of priorities and the story can be quite different along the way.

I don't think it ever really steps out of the shadow of its inspiration, but I would still consider it a strong entry in, what I am happy to imagine is, a new genre of... 'Paperslikes'?

Personally I really liked this game! I got the Good Zebra ending, and it was a cool ride! If you liked Papers, Please you'll probably like this game just as much. You feel the weight of your choices as you go, you feel like you're actually making a impact on the people you meet during the game. It's a game that really makes you feel like you're there, treating these people, trying to do better for society and your kid. Long story short: I'd recommend it!

Don’t worry, you’ll be all better after I jam this thing into your throat and force you vocalize.

In Mind Scanners, you play a citizen that lives in a diamond shaped city called The Structure, and while being a Mind Scanner sounds like it’ll be kind of fun and interesting, you actually haven’t aspired to be one. The Structure (confusingly enough, the government is named the same as the city) has actually taken your daughter sometime before the game has started and you’re told she was put under quarantine after a “highly contagious mental illness” was detected. What that is? Well, who knows they won’t tell you. But you can visit your daughter still right? Don’t have that high of hopes. The only way you can get authorized to go into The Zygnoka Institute To see her is to become a Mind Scanner and get to a Level 3 Citizenship. And that’s exactly what you do.

As you pass the days you do get more information on what’s going on in The Structure and what’s happening outside of it (which is called The Outer Zone). Like how there’s this thing called The Pulse that some citizens have that can cause the technology The Structure uses to break down. As well as a group called Moonrise that aims to bring down The Structure. You’ll learn this sooner rather than later, but the treatments Mind Scanners use have a side effect. And while The Structure doesn’t really care, or may even prefer it, Moonrise does care.

Anyway, you are now a Mind Scanner and you have a job to do now. Every day you will start in a random location in one of the many districts (surprisingly The Structure is bigger than it seems) and you’ll be given a couple of citizens that have been marked for possible treatment. They were either flagged by The Structure or by those around them. You also do get a quick overview of who they are, what they look like, and why they might need treatment. Of course, you can’t exactly go to everyone as there are only so much time in one day (200 to be exact) and traveling to them will take time depending on how far they are. So you can go to anyone that’s closest or someone that seems like they need help the most. Once you pick who you’ll be going to and travel there, you’ll also have some dialog and proceed to perform a Mind Scan.

Mind Scan is probably misleading, but you’ll basically put this headset on them and they’ll get a Rorschach test where they’ll tell you what they see on the screen and you interpret what it might mean out of three options. Some will have you questioning between two options, but some are obvious. It might even help remembering why you’re here in the first place as the little blurb you get gives you some insight on them. However, if you interpret it wrong, it will cause you to lose time as you will need to answer more questions. For example, you'll scan a very popular hairstylist, but she is recently losing her customers and doing a Mind Scan confirms her customers leaving and being angry, but it also shows that she started using dangerous tools and have been cutting anything she feels is off balance. After the Mind Scan is complete, you’ll get some text explaining more of the diagnosis and you can pick if you find them insane or sane. This decision is up to what you think is best, but declaring them as sane will put them on their way with you getting a small Kapok (the currency here) fee, while classifying them as insane will require you to treat them (and give you more Kapok at the end). Though, you'll get fined if they do harm to themselves or others because you didn't treat them.

If you classified them as insane, you’ll have to treat them for the condition they have by removing their insanity symptoms. There are 6 different insanity types that you’ll have to deal with. You do have a device that can target all of them, but it gets… a little broken after the first day. You can, however, craft devices that specifically aim for one insanity type and even chain three at the same time. Crafting them will require time and science points (which seem to be given as you do treatments), but it’s worth it. There will be at most three insanity symptoms, but the amount you’ll need to remove increases. Each device have their own little mini-games ranging from easy and quick to difficult and slow. Like a morse-code like device where you aim to replay the same sequence or one you have to slowly turn a knob to avoid putting stress onto your patient. Getting an input wrong will also stress out your patient and it getting too high will cause treatment to close before the day ends. Considering you can chain remove them, it may be best to chain the ones that take the longest. Later on, some patients will have instabilities that will make things harder like symptoms being frozen and needing to melt completely before removing, electrocuting your device afterwards, or will explode after a while.

There are also other devices you can use that don’t treat symptoms, but will help out in other ways. Like a de-stressor or one that returns personality as each successful treatment will take a point of personality away. And once it’s all gone, it can’t be brought back. So treat your patients well (or don’t). Though, I will have to say that my favorite has to be the Hypnamid which will stop time when you hypnotize your patient for a short while, which is mainly since the pills you can buy to help you out will pause along with it (and I found out you can have two Hynamid uses with one pill if you time it right).

Once treatment is completed, you’ll be paid and see what the treatment did, which will determine if they needed it (which most seem like they do) and if you treated them with care so they kept their personality. You might be tempted to just not care, especially in late game where it takes multiple days to fully treat them, but the next day you’ll get letters or calls from them or people they know on how they’re doing and if they or people around them are satisfied. Taking away personality will really hit you as their loved ones shame you. While treating them with care will even give you bonuses like extra time, more money, or just that warm feeling of doing a good job. Just keep an eye on how much time you’re taking as running out of Kapok to pay your fees at the end of the day will cause a game over.

Every patient manages to be unique from one another, with them being randomized as you might not see someone or might show up earlier, as they all suffer from different ailments or their personal life affected them differently. Heck, even when you take away their personality they manage to be unique. Some may even take extra steps to start the Mind Scan, like giving them some more time, and give you an opportunity to lower their stress.

Verdict

I’m someone that is reluctant at comparing games, especially since I’m someone that gets annoyed at that as well, unless it gives me a heavily reminds me of it and Mind Scanners really does remind me of Papers, Please. Especially after playing it. Though, I mainly came in after seeing the mini-game like treatments that you get to do and I love this game for it. The story here is fine, but really I stayed for the mini-games, the art direction, and the music that really matches the whole oppressive vibe that bares on everyone in The Structure.

Though, your enjoyment of Mind Scanners will heavily depend on if you do like time management and the mini-games that you’ll constantly be doing. As well as if you’ll get frustrated that you won’t be able to try the devices out before treating a patient (personally, I was fine with it and you can easily rewind the day). You won’t really find the story here as deep as you probably would like, but it still serves its purpose.

I really like the concept of being in a dystopian world, where everything is like a mystery, with different ways to play the game, each having thier own, different outcome. I think that the game is very exciting and mysterious. I would totally recommend the game to anyone, whos considering to buy it. It is totally worth it, and you cant stop playing, when you start. I have played it for a couple of hours in total, and im loving it. The Outer Zone should definitely keep making games like this and more.

Really sucks you in with its writing, which manages to make every character you come across feel unique. The mechanic of having to take your time with your treatments in order to be more humane to your patients is also super engaging. I really recommend it, especially for fans of games like Papers Please and Not Tonight!

Edit: Just finished my first playthrough and it took around 3-4 hours to complete. I rarely feel excited to replay games but this one had me start a new save immediately just to do some things differently, not just for the main storyline but also for the patients that I either completely missed and ones that I got not-so-good outcomes for.

Saw this on ABG Youtube channel a while ago and I was hooked. I can't stop playing it. I love it, the art style, the characters, world-building, lore, everything seems amazing.

Not very user-friendly at first though; little information about the menus is given, but with curiousity you can get the hang of quite fast.

I wanted to like this game. I love the concept, the dystopian bent, and even the old school stylization all tick boxes of joy for me. But the mechanics of the necessary mini games are just too painful to proceed through, especially with how vague some of the instructions are.

I could tolerate trying to master each of the shitty mini-games but the time and maintenance mechanics they have in play are too intense for my tastes, I would fail the game repeatedly before mastering all but the first one (due to multiple exiles, etc). It's just not enjoyable imho. Either remove the flying blind aspect, or loosen the time/economy crunch, maybe by adding difficulty levels - the two combined quickly exhausted my patience for this game. As it stands, it plays less like a dystopian adventure and more like an exercise in negative reinforcement for anyone playing it. There are far better things to spend your time on, unless you enjoy this type of thing.
