I'd booted the thing up and immediately remembered how it works, but not only because I used to consume it in great quantities. The game is easy to pick up due to how self-explanatory and sensible every aspect of it is. I don't even have to explain much. Take your units and link them together in different ways in a match-3 fashion. Create a vertical link to make them charge, link horizontally to turn them into a wall. Or something else, it depends on many variables since numerous factions have vastly different fantasy creatures sporting an array of abilities to experiment with. The linking order is key - do it right and you'll get to combine links together into powerful chains, which unfold in a highly satisfying manner. Do it wrong and have a lackluster fart instead, which will probably lead to a defeat. CoH is a reasonably challenging endeavor, so be ready to happily replay battles ad nauseam. But be that bugs or nausea, this game is still one of the best tactical puzzles in existence.

Summary
A pretty good game with a lot of variety…if you are looking for a head-to-head/PvP that you can sink a lot of hours into (NOT an RPG). If that is you, I’d flip this to recommend. The campaign was short, uninteresting, barely introduces the armies, and the last Act was insultingly incomplete. I wasn’t looking for a game where the fun is when you take on other players with hundreds of hours of experience…but that is what I got.
Clash of Heroes is a fine puzzle/battle simulation centered around a Match 3 mechanic. Ignore any tags calling this an RPG. Yes, the game has “levels,” but those levels are nothing more than a stat check (your level 3 army will have a tough time against a level 4 baddie). The only 2 choices you can actually make is the units in your army and the magic item you wield…which makes this a strategy game, not an RPG.
The campaign takes you to 5 different parts of the world where you assemble an army to do battle with evil. Each zone has unique artwork and atmosphere, and each army plays differently. While the common troops didn’t feel very different (despite having unique abilities), there are some large differences in how defenses/walls, magic spells, and elite units interact with the game. Plus, you only get to field 2 of your 5 elite units, so there can be quite a bit of variety even within the same army type.
Gameplay is smooth and intuitive. The art and music are decent, especially considering this is a port from the handheld Nintendo DS.
My first problem is that it really is supposed to be a head-to-head/PvP game, and I didn’t sign up for that. The sole purpose of the campaign is to introduce you to each army. As soon as you get a decent feel for how an army works, the game shuffles you along to the next zone. Lingering around the zone doing random encounters to practice your strategies also isn’t much fun because you quickly out-level everything, and the zone boss becomes the only moderate challenge.
My second problem is the 5th zone was insultingly incomplete. You start zone 5 with no ceremony, you are already halfway to max level but your army is level 1, bad guys start at army level 3, and the plot is nothing more than “climb the tower and kill the boss.” I mean, I’m sure it saved time because they could just reuse the tower map over, and over…and over. The total number of Act 5 fights is so small you can’t really level your elite units or learn how they work. You are going to be so under-leveled that the final boss is going be very hard. If this was an attempt to make the game “hard,” it was a really unfun way to do it by giving you an unfamiliar army that is massively outclassed.
I wanted a game where I could play and master aspects of the game, and then take on some interesting challenges. Not one where you spend 20 hours getting through the introduction and then be put up against people with hundreds (or thousands) of hours of experience in order to do anything fun. That said, if you like the Match 3 thing, want a head-to-head game that doesn’t take much time, and are ready to commit, this is probably a pretty good game for that.
Yes, there are “quick battles” that let you build an army of your choice to take on a random computer opponent. Personally…not a fan. The quick battles themselves are fine, I just like to have a purpose and structure to my gameplay.

I loved this game on my DS a few years back, and I decided to download it for nostalgia's sake. Unfortunately, I reached a point in the early game where I could not select anything mid-battle, and my only option was to reset the game. I lost over an hour of play time, and I no longer have an interest in continuing.
I understand that this is far from a AAA game, but it's kind of pathetic that nobody bothered to QC the game before releasing it.
The Steam version of this game is a disgrace. don't bother paying money for it.

Initially I had the issue where after making a wall, you lost all input and could no longer select units. That was resolved by using windows 7 compatibility mode on the .exe file.
However today the game just runs slow, like 2-4 FPS from the moment it boots up. Nothing on my computer changed in 24 hours. Nothing else was running.
If you can get it to work, it's a fun little strategy game but you might struggle to get it working and keep it working.

>Most negative reviews come are cos IT FREEZES often and you have to restart.
>The FIX for this is to change compatibility to Windows 7 of the launcher .exe
>(right click -> properties -> compatibility OR run troubleshoot compatibility)
>I can now recommend it. Enjoy.

Maybe the best puzzle game ever.
Played this gem a decade ago in my ipad, it aged like wine. Unfortunately, Ubisoft has the rights for M&M, so our only option is to play the same old games again.

Un-optimized computer ports aside. I used to loce this game when I was younger and I used to play it all the time on the DS. I would highly recommend playing it if it didn't freeze up when deleting units.

Story will put you in the shoes of five heroes (Anwen, Godric, Fiona, Aidan and Nadia) and their sidekicks as they struggle to save the world from destruction. This way you will play with every faction - elves, humans, undead, demons and wizards; so you can nicely enjoy the diverse tactics the different armies offer.
Story is okay, nothing too surprising. Graphics are very nice, suiting the younger heroes. Fights are fun and quite enjoyable.
Weakest point is the last campaign (wizards), it doesn't offer any bounties or puzzles, it's quite rushed and Nadia is an unappealing heroine. Also, there can be some problems with optimizing, changing the compatibility to Win7 helped.
I wouldn't mind seeing some similar addition to the HoMM series again, be it prequel, sequel or with some different heroes.

BUT, it is super buggy, a lot of matches crash without solution and you have to quit after playing for 30 minutes with someone. No fix from Ubisoft from years.

There is no amount of strategy or tactical thinking that can overcome a poorly programmed RNG reliant core mechanic.
If you're one of those gaming masochists who believes that exercises in futility are 'challenging' and 'fun'? Then you will absolutely adore this game. If, however, you would eventually like the opportunity to learn the story of this game? Which, by the way, on a more positive note, SEEMS like it's pretty good! I say 'SEEMS' because I can't get past the gate guard in the second portion who keep supercharging one, two, or sometimes three champion units every turn, while I can't even get one on the field reliably, despite having maxed out my capacity for them. Oh! And let's not forget that said unit takes half damage from all physical attacks, no damage from magical attacks, and, since you had no opportunity to gain anything resembling decent experience or levels prior to this match? Can one shot you if left open.
How do you tactically defeat such a monster? Easy! *uninstalls the game*

I played this game on my DS when I was a kid, and I found it by accident on the steam store.
The game is really fun to play, the only problem is that the game has alot of different bugs. Like the emerald dragon bug. The bug I encountered that made me write this review, is a launch bug that repets the ubisoft logo until infinity. The game is now unplayable and there seems to be no fix for it. I tried to play it in compatibility mode for windos 7, reinstalling it, uppdating my drivers and verifyning the game files. Nothing works. I tried to get a refund but to no avail.
I wouldn't buy the game until the bugs are fixed!

Calling it a match 3 game is selling it short -- your pieces are actually unique units with different abilities that level over time. Your units are arranged in a grid, and you can only move the unit on the bottom row. Match three of the same type vertically, and they will go into an attack formation which launches at your opponent in a few turns. Match three horizontally, and they will make a defensive wall. Different units have varying stats and abilities which can really change the way you play, and make it actually a reasonably involved puzzle figuring out how to best counter the enemy's unit composition and layout. E.g. if they have a large special unit on the field, some of which require a match 5 to launch bu make up for it with huge damage, you might want to kill it off with a fast-attacking smaller unit first. Leveling units makes them more effective, but more of the strategy comes in selecting which units to actually include in your army -- different units synergize together better than others.
As the campaign progresses you complete individual characters campaigns, who are all in different regions and have totally different army compositions. It gives a nice variety to the game, and its fun to end up commanding units in one campaign you fought against previously. They also tie all the characters together in an overarching story -- it's nothing incredible, but it does tie together the narrative well enough.
I haven't had any problems with the game running so far, and I'd definitely recommend it -- there really isn't very much else like this out there.

I loved this game in the past. I have bought it on my DS and played for hours and hours. First I played the demo and ran into a game breaking bug. I figured this was just in the demo as that was a separate download so I proceeded to buy the game. Within minutes a new bug appeared and will not allow me to play the campaign. When I form a wall the game 'soft freezes' where I cannot continue with my turn or end it. If this bug and others are fixed I will update my review but as is myself and others cannot play. Look in the forums of this game, it is filled with bugs and some fixes (such as running in compatibility modes) do not work.

With its kinda unique match-three gameplay, Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes can draw hours of your time just to figure out how to make the best out of your troop formation, item, and hero characteristic combination.
To finish the campaign, you should most of the time balance your troop (ie. leveling them up gradually) and sometimes have to specialize your troop formation to deal with tricky scenarios.
Can't wait to challenge my strategies in the Quick Battle mode.

Game constantly will bug or crash while in a battle or just walking around the map. I have restarted the story so many times due to bugs, and it just seems to get worse and worse.
I suggest getting this on any other platform.
Dont waste your money, the quick battle and online isnt worth the bugs.
