Was ein Spiel!

If It's Hostile, You Kill It

Gameplay: 8/10 - 40%
- The game did a great job of immersion. You had a choice of guns blazing or the more survival focused game. You either ran through the map killing everything or scowering the map for resources and making everything count. Personally I believe the game should be played in a more survival aspect if you do choose to only do only one playthrough.
- The guns followed more realistic recoil and encouraged you to take aim to preserve resources which you don't see too often in FPS games.
- The stealth system was okay, and I believe was only implemented in the Redux version which might explain why it felt odd at times.
- The game during my initial playthough was fun and engaging however the replayability of the game felt low despite its various difficulty modes or playstyles.
- Wish there was a way to skip cutscenes/filler content in missions, especially during my second playthrough.

Graphics: 8/10 - 15%
- Although the game has outdated graphics the level of detail they had on corpses, the environment and the monsters of the world really stood out to me. Don't expect a cinematic experience but you can tell that the details they placed in their game was to help you be immersed in their underground dystopian world.

Audio: 5/10 - 15%
- I did not like a lot of audio in this game. Voices (in english) felt emotionless at times and the children, which were present multiple times, sounded like adults with the audio tuned (apparently not present in Russian voices)
- Vehicles only had 1/2 sounds and a vehicle moving sounded like it was just idling.
- Very repetitive monster sounds.
- Gun sounds were meh at best.

Bugs/Playability 6/10 - 30%
- Visual bugs included teeth showing through lips while talking (only in some characters), dead enemies clipping into walls and getting stuck in weird positions, nothing that was too crazy.
- Major blow to points was the crashing. Although the game saved often and I never lost too much save file progress due to the crashes I did end up losing all of my achievement progress which did suck because there are multiple achievements that are kill 100 enemies with ____ gun. I also had to revisit all the levels prior to get the notebooks again. Thankfully it did not reset my "Moral Points" that contribute to the "good" ending. - In total I probably crashed just over 10 times and lost significant progress once.

Overall Score: 7/10

Achievements Review:

Difficulty: 8/10 - 40%
- Difficulty of achievements was well balanced. I only had two achievements I disliked which was getting kills with fire grenades because they just downright suck and the marksman achievement because there a very limited areas to actually do this and I had to save scum for it.

The Grind: 8/10 - 40%
- The only grinding I had to do were the kill ___ enemies with ___ gun which probably wouldn't have needed much grinding if I didn't lose my save file.
- The flame grenade and marksmen were annoying but only required 15-30, not too grindy.

Variety: 9/10 - 20%
- Game had good variety of campaign, exploration and "play style" achievements. Maybe could have done with a little less kill ___ enimes with ___ gun achievements.

Achievement Score: 8.2/10

I am currently going through my extensive steam library and playing games to 100% completion. I'm doing this to revive my love for gaming instead of mindlessly playing games. I aim to explore everything the game has to offer and all the features a developer implemented into their game.

Metro at it's finest

For years Metro 2033 was used as a benchmark test for the latest graphics cards, so it feels strange to already be seeing a remastered version hit the digital shelves. It's easy to be cynical and assume that Metro 2033 Redux is aimed squarely at the console market, whose under-TV boxes have only just caught up with Metro 2033's full majesty. It's finally a way for living-room dwellers to see what the game is like with all its video options switched on. But what's the value for PC players?

Well, Metro 2033 Redux is an honest to goodness, genuine remaster. A collection of tweaks and polishes, do-overs and rejigs that elevates the game to even greater heights, this is a full visual revamp that brings it in line with Last Light in terms of graphical tech.

If you haven't played Metro 2033 before, this will now be the best place to start. It's post-apocalyptic FPSing at its finest, with a uniquely grim backdrop and appropriately negative portrayal of mankind in the midst of that. The premise of Metro is that the surface of Earth is scorched and irradiated, so the people of Moscow live within the tunnels of the metro (hey, that's the name of the game!) while the Dark Ones above their heads plot against them.

A feature which gives you the option of bartering high-grade ammunition for better guns/upgrades or using them to, you know, shoot mutants is a standout innovation that creates tension in how you approach combat. Scarcity of ammo is a staple of the survival horror genre, but never before has finding a stash of bullets prompted such an internal conflict.

For a game with a grim colour filter, 2010's 2033 was also remarkably pretty. 2014's version is a marked difference. I'm not talking a little texture upgrade here, I'm talking new meshes, new animations and reworked environments. Metro 2033 Redux is Metro 2033 tweaked and polished to a high standard; this feels like the definitive version of the game 4A originally wanted to make.

Even down to the main menu screen. It's the same, but vastly improved. It's not like the old one is looking particularly weathered, it's just that the difference in production values here make it worth paying for again.

There are other smaller changes to the Redux edition. Cutscenes have been reworked so that the camera never leaves protagonist Artyom's perspective. Again, there was nothing wrong with wresting the non-interactive viewpoint away from the player from time to time in 2033, but such a change demonstrates that this is closer to their vision of how this story should be told. In such a tense, atmospheric game heightening the player's engagement with the narrative like this just feels like common sense.

4A has revisited every aspect of 2033, evident in the improved lighting and weather effects, the expanded environments, added secrets or even the addition of some of Metro: Last Light's better features, like weapon customisation.

So is it worth buying again? Absolutely. Especially since you can grab Metro 2033 Redux for half price on Steam if you already own Metro 2033. If you don't already own it, then $24.99/£17 for an excellent game that you should have played by now anyway is a pretty damn good deal.

For me the Metro Series as a whole, has been one of my most favorite games up there with Half Life, and Dishonored.

Metro 2033 and other entries in the series have great gameplay and an very immersive worlds, I've put hundreds of hours into the series and see myself coming back for more playthroughs every year. If its your first playthrough, I wouldn't recommend Ranger Hardcore for it, unless you're confident in your ablilties.

Though there are some bugs in the first two games, random crashes at times; It's not unplayable however, but they happen not often as for in a single playthrough you're unlikely to run into these issues.
On Ranger Hardcore, there is a UI bug that doesn't show your throwables when you switch them with tab, with only an audio cue that will tell you which you have selected; However this is manageable if you've familiarized yourself with them on previous sittings. On Exodus this has been majorly fixed and it doesn't have this problem.
In Last Light, there is a bug where in after/during the level Bandits you loose all ability to do take downs, which heavily makes trying to get the good ending of the game difficult in later levels.

If you're a fan of 2033 and Last light and haven't given Exodus a try because of the drift to Open World; I highly recommend you give it a try, as it doesn't feel out of place. Exodus has become one of my favorite games in the series.
With the added crafting mechanic, expanded weapon systems, and various other elements. It has a great story and the DLC's for it are great, my favorite out of the two being Sam's Story.
I have yet to give Ironmode(NG+) mode a try yet, as I don't have my old saves, but I'll update my opinion on that when I get a chance.

Overall, if you're a returning fan, a fan of games like Dishonored, Half Life, Stalker, and other FPS's, or hesitant; I highly recommend this game series to you, it's truly one of my favorite series out there. So next time you its on sale, I recommend you pick up the series!

Metro 2033 Redux is a remaster of sorts of the original game based on the novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky of the same name. The main differences are graphical, though gameplay balances are also present.

Premise: In Metro 2033 you'll take control of Artyom, seeking aid to help his home station. For the uninitiated, Metro 2033 takes place in the metro system underneath Moscow, Russia. The surface and the world at large have been made effectively uninhabitable due to radiation, mutants and an additional, more paranormal presence known as the Dark Ones. Taking place some 20 years after the events that caused this, resources are scarce and Factions have formed.

”Even the apocalypse can't keep us from killing each other over ideology.”

Now, the idea of the post-apocalypse is certainly not anything new with your STALKERS, Wastelands and Fallouts. But I would say that Metro's take on that premise is somewhat unique. I believe it to be one of the few games that can be described as immersive without being a total farce. I don't see many horror games using the 'survival' aspects that “Survival Horror” typically implies. Granted, there are multiple difficulty options in this game to alter just how rare bullets and gas mask filters are, but I think the default here is quite approachable, yet taxing in terms of keeping situations tense. One major complaint I often hear regarding Metro is that the guns feel weak. At times, the enemies do feel a little... spongy. However, I believe this weakening of normal bullets to be intentional to force the player to occasionally use their military grade bullets — which are used as currency in the game.

buT maH iMmUrSHun — anecdotes
This game is very atmospheric. It's also one of the first games I ever played on a PC after switching from console (not this version but the original) and I was blown away after realizing that putting on your gas mask, talking out your flashlight, wiping your gas mask off, bringing out the recharge device for your flashlight, flicking your lighter on and off, using the lighter to see the compass in the dark not only had different buttons but had different contexts as well. I was also surprised you could do those things at all. What's more is the way moisture will build up in the mask, or blood will spatter onto it, or becomes cracked and need to be replaced. Mild spoiler that speaks to immersion: There is a section of the game where a child rides piggyback on Artyom. This causes his aim and movement to become labored as he pushes the weight of the child around — it's one of my favorite sequences.

Even the weapons become more than they first appear. There's your normal, expected weapons like rifles, shotguns and pistols. But the pneumatic weapons are what come as something much more interesting. Similar to the charging device used for the flashlight, you can charge pneumatic weapons as well. In fact, you have to in order for them to work properly — but you can also overcharge them, allowing you to fire the (usually steel balls) at much higher speed causing massive damage. Effectively turning what seems like a pea shooter into a formidable sniper rifle.

Anecdotally, this game reminds me of FEAR 2 a lot. Specifically FEAR 2, not the entire series. This is largely my disconnected brain making similar images and themes feel related. Though, outside of both games being horror themed first person shooters with vague paranormal — maybe psychosomatic aspects, they don't really have anything to do with each other. I've already played 2033 and Last Light a few times but at the time of writing this I've not yet gotten to Exodus. So my playtime does not speak of the campaign length — it's much closer to around 10 hours for one playthrough.

The light betrays us.

The thing that may not be super obvious in this game, especially as it is mostly quite linear with some small areas to explore if have you the gusto (or need for resources), is that there is a hidden morality system in the game. Some of the choices are very upfront and clear — but most of them are background calculations you're not privy to. These subtleties will effect the outcome at the end.
However, you cannot import your save into Metro: Last Light, so it doesn't actually matter. And only one ending is canon, while the other is not.
Stealth is a big part of this game, or rather, choosing to be stealthy rather than overtly aggressive plays a significant role in the minute-to-minute of how the game plays out. You can take out lights, use throwing knives, use bolts or silenced/pneumatic weapons to take out enemies quietly or you can go in guns blazing and light everything on fire. And just as enemies using lights makes them more visible in the dark, so to does light for Artyom.

The Gist:

Story-driven horror (mostly sci-fi) FPS games are one of my favorite genres. It's taken me some time to actually write anything about these games, and truth be told I think it's because I find these games to be more obtuse than your average FPS. Maybe even middle of the line, quality wise, in what might have been an over-saturated genre back in 2010. STALKER was already out, Singularity had released the same year. The original game was quite honestly a bit clunky — this redux version is only slightly improved. Not to mention, the world building itself is not the greatest without the context of the books. However, it is a strong narrative and I believe in what could only have been said after the fact, a classic.

4A Games, the devs, are Ukrainian.

I said when I reviewed Exodus, I did not care for 2033. I do not know how I came to that conclusion other than then it may be just that much different than Redux. Anyway, I was dead wrong. I absolutely loved this game and just finished it. I am now playing Last Light again before playing Exodus again. I only wish I had played them all in order, but I am doing that now. I put this game up as one of the best I have ever played and place it at the same level as Last Light, only a half notch below Exodus which I found to my most fav game of all time. This trilogy is just fantastic, I love the story line and how it was all put together. Wonderful job people

Pretty cool game I guess.

While you're here, here's my very own Perfect Pumpkin Pie recipe :)

INGREDIENTS:
1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin
1 (14 ounce) can Sweetened Condensed Milk
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
½ teaspoon salt
1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust

DIRECTIONS (Very Basic :D):
Step 1
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Whisk pumpkin, sweetened condensed milk, eggs, spices and salt in medium bowl until smooth. Pour into crust. Bake 15 minutes.

Step 2
Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F and continue baking 35 to 40 minutes or until knife inserted 1 inch from crust comes out clean. Cool. Garnish as desired. Store leftovers covered in refrigerator.

This recipe has been passed down in my family for 4 generations. Please enjoy!

Metro 2033 is amazing at times and extremely frustrating at others. I played through the game on hardcore survival difficulty and I found it to be overall fairly well balanced, I never ran out of ammo completely and enemies weren't too overpowered or underpowered. I loved the game's atmosphere, it has this great sense of tension with everything being against you. While I loved the environments for their visuals, the level design can be infuriating at times, where you have a timer due to limited air filters, but the level is designed to have like 10 dead ends and 1 correct path. This level design lead me to load a checkpoint once I figured out where to go, so I don't run out of air filters. There is a specific section in the library where one of the librarians (literally the second one) is inexplicably agro to you, even though they're supposed to stop when you look them in the eyes, this confused me as to how to deal with this enemy type even though I was doing nothing wrong, it turns out you are supposed to just run past that douchebag (who one-shots you on some difficulties) even though it looks like where you're supposed to go is a dead end. There was also a lot of glitches, mostly involving enemy AI getting stuck on geometry or standing on their enemies' heads, but once there was a friendly AI who just didn't move which prevented me from progressing. I really liked the pacing of the story and the progression of getting better and better gear as the game goes on. But in spite of these issues, I had a lot of fun playing it, combat is usually pretty intense and fun. I do think that the stealth mechanics are not great, but they are far better than the original game's stealth, the upgraded stealth can feel a little too overpowered at times. My main problem with the stealth though is that, once you get detected, enemies can see you and shoot you precisely even when you're in pitch black. The story is also great, the morality of the story is very interesting, even if the moral points system is a little dumb at times. Overall, I think the game is good, but don't expect it to be the smoothest ride out there.

Drags on a bit but it's located towards the more interesting end of the shooter story quality spectrum.

Playing in Russian with (or without) subtitles adds to the atmosphere.

Literally one of the best shooter games ever made, on par with Bioshock, Dead Space, Metroid Prime, and Resident Evil 4. This list would be longer but I chose not to include non-shooter games. Although calling it a shooter is disingenuous to the type of experience you can expect. It's more of a survival horror stealth action immersive sim with guns. Imagine all the good parts of Fallout 3, STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, and the Sniper mission in Call of Duty 4, doused in supernatural elements, philosophical ruminations on what it means to be human, and vodka. You manage your limited resources and currency (buy more bullets? more gas mask filters? more medkits? you can't buy them all), do battle with or avoid scary monsters and not-so-nice sprites, sneak around bandits commies and... members of the german reich [because I don't think steam will let me say f@scist or n@zi lmao], blow shit up, marvel at the magnificent haunting beauty of post-nuclear wasteland as you sink seamlessly into the shoes of best protagonist Artyom, and, yes, you can ignore all of that and just go in guns blazing.

Great story and worldbuilding and immersion, great visuals, great sound design, great controls, great enemy design, great pacing, the perfect length to spend an evening or two. And then there's two more games in the series that are exactly the same but even more and even better. I've played through it 4 times and I'll play through it again. And so will you.

Just don't play the original because it may sour your outlook on this superior enhanced better perfect version.

I'm gonna be a bitch because I love the original metro 2033 so much. I HATE the simplified stealth system and filter timer in the redux, and the character remodels are some fake ass shit. The original metro 2033 has period correct armor and gear for everybody, a punishing yet addictive ranger hardcore, and a stealth system that has everybody's fingers on their triggers. You can't sprint around knocking people out in the OG 2033, but with the redux's stupid stealth overhaul, the boys that live in an actual nightmare can't seem to understand how to shoot something charging right at them. The original also had armor pieces that would fly off if hit, knocking the enemy to the ground; in addition to actually existing, giving you a more realistic picture of what an enemy in a post-apocalyptic Russian Federation would look like.

I've beaten the original god knows how many times. Love that game to pieces. Redux ain't the way it was meant to be, man.

If you're having issues getting the original to work, there's three files you have to drag over from Last Light (PhysX.dll's, all three of 'em) that should prevent the crash on startup. If you don't have that piece of shit, check online and you should be able to download them (or just leave a comment here.)

A true classic, the difficulty of this game is almost flawless, ranger hardcore is not impossible and the HUD removal makes for a more immersive experience, stealth is quite nice and rewarding.

I love the trowing knives, a little tip with them is to use them with your weapons laser sight.

The story itself is worth investing in, looting and treasure finding is a nice bonus.

The enemies are interesting and varied, and some will jump scare you out of nowhere.

The guns also feel, sound and look quite nice and graphics hold up even in 2021.

The level design is linear BUT linear as in DISHONORED style linear, so there is usually more than one path/option for an area.

If you are a fan of shooters, occasional horror survival, and great stories then pick this game up when you can, you probably wont be disappointed.

This is such a beautiful game. Set in post apocalyptic world of Russia in year 2033. After a major disaster event, the remaining population of Russia is now living in metro underground tunnels. The atmosphere of every metro station is made to perfection. People walking around, begging, talking in Russian language, or in English but with a heavy Russian accent, trading, feeding pigs, drinking, singing. You have a feeling of the real living world in tunnels. People going about their business.

You are Artiom, a young fellow who got the mission to travel from your metro station to the next one and do some basic chores. But on the way things happen, you get sidetracked, and you end up in a wrong place, and get yourself involved along the way in the greater mission of saving the remaining people. The whole story is really great, and it is based on a book by Dmitry Glukhovsky.

Along your journey through many metro stations and encounters you have companion(s), mostly the guy called Bourbon. He is a shady character, but actually helps you out, and you help him out along the way. To be honest, I was scared for my in-game character the whole game, because the enemies are pretty scary, and the locations are scary in themselves, especially parts where you must climb outside in the open world, and solve some missions under the gas mask, in frantic search for gas mask filters, and avoiding flying enemies.

This game is very memorable and it calls you to play it again. The only downside to the game is that it is a bit short. I passed it on Hard difficulty in 17 hours with taking my time discovering locations and walking around admiring the game itself. But it is an excellent experience, it is linear, but I didn't mind that at all.

Top story and ambience. The story could be longer, I've got run thru it in 6 hours.

I will definitely repeat the experience.

Update:

So, I have played this game ones again. Everything worked normal as it should. This time, I took some more time to complete the game, to get more achievements and good ending, because last time, what i remember, I got the bad ending. I was getting only good karma, I even gave people more than just one golden bullet, but still got bad ending.

After the end of the game, I reloaded some of the chapters, to get what I have missed, but game crashes after i load any of the chapter.

Metro 2033 is the 2033rd entry in the Metro series.

In 2013, a nuclear exchange between nations left the world an uninhabitable wasteland because, I dunno, Oil or something. Before the bombs dropped, thousands of residents of Moscow managed to flee into the metro tunnels of the city, which were designed to survive a nuclear assault. Twenty years later, people just kind of live down there now.
You play as Artyom, a cool guy who is good at shooting stuff. Artyom’s home station is under attack by strange monsters known as the Dark Ones, and he is tasked with getting help from Polis Station if his friend Hunter does not return within a few days.

With his home on the line, Artyom arms himself and disobeys his step father’s wishes and travels to Polis station because he wants to help and also you’re not my real dad.
Also Communists and Nazis show up. You know, just because.

Metro is probably my favorite entry in the “Post apocalypse stories made by sad Russians” genre. When I played the original 2033, I liked it so much I ended up buying the book, and then the next book, and then I had to wait till 2013 to get a sequel. And then the other sequel didn’t come out for another six years after that.

Jesus. Six Years?

The Metro games are a series of first person shooters created by 4A games and originally published by THQ and is now published by Deep Silver. Metro 2033 is a rather linear journey through the Moscow Metro that has been jury-rigged into a society split between quasi nation states that each control specific parts of the Metro. There’s also, like, a Satanist cult that are trying to dig a hole to hell in the books. I always thought that was funny.

Also, get it, Linear, because the Metro is on rails. Haha.

The Metro series does a great job at feeling like a world that really sad people get to live in. Thousands of dudes just kind of stuck underground and making the best of it. You can pick up how people live just by looking around. Pig farms, butcher shops selling meat from rats or unspecified mutant animals, military grade ammo is currency, you can hear people talk about jobs like fisher, mushroom gatherer, etc. Its really neat.

These guys actually do better living underground than people who have an entire country basically to themselves in Western Post-apocalyptic series’. Get your shit together, Ellie.

The politics are also fun, people actually fight wars down there, its crazy.

Its been literally 10 years since I played vanilla 2033, so I can’t comment on all the changes. I did notice the lighting is different, a bit brighter, and the weapons aren’t as flashy and bright when they fire. Also, Artyom sounds different, which makes sense since he’s 24 and sounded like he’s been a sad drunk for 45 years in the original release.
I do miss his old voice, though.

A big part of Metro is the weapons, and luckily they all sound punchy and do a solid chunk of damage when you decide to aim it at something that doesn’t need to exist anymore. I recommend playing on Ranger difficulty or above, its not really all that hard to begin with, but it helps make gun fights feel intense and enemies, much like myself, tend to fall down faster when they are hit with bullets.

Going through Metro 2033 in a day was pretty cool
I guess
. I was always kind of put off from playing Ranger, but now I get why people say its THE way to play Metro. I can’t really tell you which is better between 2033 and 2033 Redux, since its been so long since I played 2033 Vanilla, but I still think Redux is a good choice if not just because easy-Stealth is the funnest stealth in any game.

I only ran into one glitch, and that was a cutscene monster appearing before the cutscene and just kind of standing there until the actual cutscene played, which was weird. But other than that, hey, good to go.

Metro 2033 Redux gets a score that would make you mad out of 10.

Crows now have a concept of Zero.

Join the Dirk Metro. We have the only video games in all of Moscow.

Also, I think I got this game for free. I'm not sure.

I'm not going to garrulously go on as there are plenty of review for that, but in short, this game is graphically beautiful and perfectly atmospheric. Sounds of nefarious anomalies down distant tunnels will have you checking behind you regularly all while checking time left on air filters( plenty even on survival). There aren't many detractors for this game aside from odd facial animations and the same voice actor for virtually everyone. This is simply a very enjoyable experience. I will warn though that this game never seemed optimized because my first gpu ( gtx 1060) was pushed to the max by this game. Having said that, a 20 series card or more hardly breaks a sweat with this game.

What a ride! Still to this day eleven years later an incredibly immersive and stunning game.

The stark contrast between the dark tunnels of the underground and the gleaming snow-covered surface of Moscow keeps the environment feeling fresh throughout the journey. Sadly, it's held-back by a series of poorly implemented stealth mechanics, perplexing morality system, and from time to time questionable level design.

I'd say it's definitely worth a try if you're into the post-apocalyptic genre!

I recall playing the original Metro years ago and absolutely hating it. Stealth was broken, enemies would snipe you from across the map, the checkpoints would be in random terrible places most of the time, even while you were being shot at and almost dying. But i was convinced to finish it, and managed to enjoy the game a bit by the end. enough to give the series a shot and buy the Redux versions of 2033 and Last Light.

Metro 2033 Redux is a huge improvement over the original version. Graphically and just overall with it's game mechanics. It is a lot more enjoyable. It did away with all the annoyances i mentioned above. The difference is so big, that it makes me question if i was just super bad at playing the original. Might have to go back and revisit it to see.

Recommended if you've never played any of the games. Good story, gameplay and excellent atmosphere.

I didn't love this game nearly as much as I think most people did, But it didn't stop me from appreciating what Metro 2033 had to offer. It's pretty clear 4A's first game has been impressively handled under a small budget, but that doesn't stop the problems that come with it.

The game play is probably where the budgetary limits are most notable. The gun play is actually pretty solid, although nothing excellent, movement can be a bit wonky but it gets the job done. The game is always serviceable, everything works fine for the content you're playing through, and the games short enough where it never gets tedious. The main standout is the weaponry. Although a small arsenal, most guns felt rather unique to Metro's setting and I always revelled in finding a new one.

While the game play is mostly fine, its instantly brought up to a much better level of quality with the inclusion of ranger mode. A lack of HUD, not being able to tell how much ammo you have in combat and relying on in-universe notifiers for your survival was what made Metro's moment to moment game play so enjoyable and unique to me. I highly recommend playing on ranger mode as it adds so much to the experience, just keep in mind the game will disable tutorials in this mode, which is a bit infuriating. I do wish the game went all out on the survivalist aesthetic though. Resource management even on survival mode is a piece of cake (I almost always had full ammo) and the guards are so pathetically blind that stealth ended up being very easy to maintain. Game play was still enjoyable overall, its just very clear it could've been pushed much further.

By far the most terrific part about Metro and what I presume is the reason why people love this franchise so much is the world you explore. This is an excellent take on a post-apocalyptic setting, I love how humanity is confined to these dark and claustrophobic spaces while the normal world is represented as this terrifying unknown. Exploring how people have adapted to living in these tunnels was an excellent treat, and just built up more excitement for when I got brief visits to the surface. While the aesthetic of this world is great, the story told in 2033 is rather lacking to say the least. The premise, while enticing towards the end, is just so one note for the majority of the game, mostly just being mindless travelling. This would be fine, but going through the metro, while visually interesting, is just very an uneventful story. I think what could've saved the story is interaction with the various travel companions you meet throughout the story. Unfortunately, most of the NPCs end up being rather dull and simplistic in personality, a factor that's only made worse by Artyom being a silent protagonist (he has a voice, but only speaks in loading screens), a limiting decision that makes most companion banter feel awkward and incomplete. I feel like 2033 does an amazing job adapting Glukhovsky's novel into a realistic world, it just misses offering an interest plot to accompany it.

I think where the game struggles the most is in the design of individual levels, the quality here ranges a lot. There were some real amazing standouts here that I loved. The first trip to the surface where you discover what has happened to Moscow was nothing short of incredible, and I'll probably remember The Library for many years to come. These levels make it such a shame when the majority of time spent in the game ends up being traversing uninteresting enemy camps as well as way too many outright bad missions. Limiting set-pieces plague the story and are almost never any fun to trudge through, and I was hitting my limit when a terrible turret section was immediately followed with an awful escort mission. Most missions also suffer from relying on an NPC to walk to specific objectives, giving the player nothing to do but listen to rather bland dialogue. I really cannot stress enough how good some levels in 2033 are, there's just a lot of bad ones scattered in between.

5/10

Metro 2033 has a lot to offer and I think 4A have an impressive debut thats been cleaned up by the redux version, but its ultimately weighed down drastically by its issues. I'd recommend 2033 if you plan on playing through the entire franchise as its a solid opener, it's just not the best as a standalone product.

Metro 2033 Redux | November 26, 2020 | [★★★★]

This is one of the most immersive games I've played. Metro 2033 Redux captures the world of apocalyptic Metro inside and out. Combined it with great amount of deep lore that makes your adventure filled with astonishing encounters.

It also has plenty of mechanics that enrich the atmosphere, especially the gas mask particle effects and its wiping features. Guns that very fitting to the theme and stealth which is one of my favorite sections of the game. A must play particularly for those fans of the FPS genre.

Metro 2033 is the game that have taken on three times and all those time finished it till the end. There aren't honestly many games that would last too many playthroughs, but this title surely isn't one of them.

First entry start journey of Artyom who hails from small faraway backwater metro station that encounters new threat, so young fellow needs to push onwards to get help after experienced fighter doesn't come after promised time has passed by. Path forward is filled with threats and new things to see with good amounts of mystery and learning curve in them. The sections between combat, story, companions, safe places and unnatural things are very well balanced which is even more enforced by exquisite feeling of the game and atmosphere. Be it winter in outside world or tight dark corners of the metro.

Game doesn't hold your hand too much, but characters and world itself teach you about it and how to work around things Artyom will encounter during his journey. This means one can go at enemies guns blazing or in stealth to learn more things while in shadows listening in conversations.

Most likely will never forget that intense moment when backing away from Librarian in it's halls and other one decides to plummet on the floor. Never wished some much having crossed eyes as back then. Think it's the best title out of three while doing things very well all around and would consider it being a masterpiece with a full score!

Metro 2033, the stepping stone to the metro series, this game surprised a lot of people when it first came out and for very good reasons.

I wouldn't qualify this game as an FPS, I would say it's more like a survival game where you happen to have guns.
This game will keep you on your toes, you will second guess every sound you hear, you will count every bullet, the world is a chaotic, unsafe place and the game will make sure to pass that dread to the player, all in all, a pretty unique and spine chilling experience that I totally recommend.

Plus, the voice acting and graphics are top notch, guns feel and sound great.
Metro 2033 is all around a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ great game.

Complete the first part of the famous Metro series.
I was left with good impressions of the game and its passage. It has a very wonderful atmosphere, transmitted from the book of Glukhovsky. The graphics and gameplay in the game are also at a high level. I liked the plot average, but still very good. In the end, I want to say that I recommend the game to everyone who has not yet played it, especially Russian-speaking gamers, because it is in this language that the whole spirit and atmosphere of the game is conveyed.
I definitely recommend it!

It is my third time beating Metro 2033. I remember playing it on release day. Good times. Well, having played it in 2020 at 144 FPS, I gotta say the Redux edition aged well with respectful graphics. Story and lore is a treat for post apocalyptic survival fans. Spooky scenes still get me. HD graphics look really well especially in low light tunnels.

I expected to be bothered by the game mechanics, but it is pretty good and did not bother me at all. Shooting is intuitive and pretty simple. You mostly encounter enemies in close range, so it is up to you whether you'd want a 2x scope or a red dot sight. Silencing your weapons makes the game a bit too easy though. You cannot vault, but ammo management and general survival theme leaves some room for head on combat or stealth approach.

Don't expect to be blown away by the visuals, but the lore or the vibe is second to none. Stalker games haven't aged well, so there aren't a lot of alternatives to Metro style games. Fallout or Wolfenstein series are AAA, so Metro series are rather AA with minor bugs, but with an awesome story, which makes up for repetitive gameplay.

There is no skill tree, so you only upgrade you weapons, swap air filters in your mask, and clear the dirt off of your mask. You're also a killing machine.

You will probably end up speaking with Russian accent after playing the game. It gets funny though. I have played it in both Russian and English. Russian version sounds like fake Russian whereas the English version sounds like an overkill of Russian accent. Enable subtitles because even in the English version Russian dialogue occasionally pops out of nowhere. AA quality confirmed.

Since the game isn't particularly long, it is also a treat for achievement hunters. It takes about 9 hours to finish the story, so I would definitely recommend playing this prior to jumping into Metro Exodus or Last Light.

Redux bundle might be cheaper than purchasing Metro 2033 or Metro Last Light games separately. You're in for a good time if you enjoy first person story driven shooters. So give the Metro series a try.

Post apocalyptic scenarios do fascinate me. I listened to the audiobook of Metro 2033 some years ago, so I knew about the base story, but forgot all the details. This game is telling the story very well. The world feels authentic and does look great. The Redux version of Metro 2033 is still looking very very good in 2020 though it was released in 2014.

Metro 2033 is a linear game, with a fast pacing. Action more or less all over the time. I even consider the stealth passages as action, as they can cause a nice tense stress level. You mostly have the option to stealth through an area, but one little mistake turns the situation into a heavy fight. Which can be a problem, when you are running short on ammo. Though there are enough loot spots, you still need to find them.

There is a nice diversity in the areas, from crowded underground stations, to snowy and frozen cities, a giant library, a nuclear reactor with an alien like setting and a great view from a giant tower. The game never gets boring. There are also some pretty tricky parts, where you might have to use trial and error to find the correct path, while enemies are hunting you all the time.

Though I completed the game in less than 9 hours, which makes the game quite short nowadays, I enjoyed every minute. An easy recommendation for me.

I played the native Linux version, during loading transitions there are some heavy hiccups interrupting the narration a bit, but gameplay has been butter smooth and I had no crashes.

Scary, immersive and beautiful is the three words I would use to sum up Metro 2033 REDUX. It is a great post apocalyptic game that takes the player on a journey through the Russian metro post WW3, where you discover different factions fighting for control of the tunnel. This happens parallel to a mutant invasion that could eradicate the last humans surviving in the metro.

The story was rather vague but it all cleared up as I started reading the Artyom diary pages left around the levels. Apparently there are different endings based on a hidden moral points system, which is neat. Something that further promotes several playthroughs is that there exists two different gamemodes -Spartan & Survival. The Spartan gamemode is for someone that rather plays a more fast pased FPS whilst Surival aims to give a more authentic post apocalyptic experience where resources are more scarce and enemies tend to be smarter. (The enemy AI was terrible on detecting stealth in both gamemodes but that didn't really affect the gameplay too much...)

The Future is Now

When traversing the snowy ruins of post-nuclear-war Moscow accompanied by the howling wind, the clicking of your Geiger counter, and the occasional screaming of something not human, with the added knowledge that it’s only just beginning, you know Metro 2033 is on to something great. It’s the setting, a surrealist’s interpretation of humanity’s greatest fears – the unknown, the new normal, the “monster under the bed” put into everyday settings, like train stations and playgrounds – that give the game an eerie vibe that something is off, wrong even. Metro 2033 takes proven storytelling concepts trailblazed by other mediums and translates them superbly into one of the greatest first-person shooters of its generation. With a solid combination of exciting story beats mixed with great linear action and good gameplay mechanics, Metro 2033 is simply a must-own for fans of its genre. But it also has the unique ability to extend to fans of other genres by providing something all gamers seek – immersion.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2121588961

Metro 2033 oozes atmosphere. From the very beginning, when you’re thrust into the metro tunnels of nuclear-wasteland Moscow, the game does a superb job of delivering exposition that never feels forced. It assumes the player is intelligent, and will take the time to soak up the breadcrumbs it’s leaving along the path. Each metro station in the tunnels acts as a hub, and it is here where our main character, Artyom, will be granted the time to wander and experience the culture of Russia’s people. The populace is now crammed into the train tunnels, avoiding the patrolling beasts and nuclear radiation on the surface above. There’s a verisimilitude to it – mothers trying to feed their children, men making plans of war, hockers trying to make some coin, shops, bars, restaurants, strip clubs and underneath, sadness?

Forward to the Past

There is a feeling of emptiness here that palpates through the entire narrative. A world wrought by the consequences of failed government. The protagonist is young, an idealistic do-gooder that wants to save the people of the metro from themselves. After some initial story beats and exposition, the game presents our hero with a crossroads. A decision Artyom has to make will impact his life and accelerate his future. He has to grow up and use the skills the metro has taught him: survival and violence. And he does it well. The more you progress the more you feel Artyom learning the terrifying depth of his abilities. He’s a killer. And a good one. Motivated to do the right thing, Artyom seeks to use his penchant for violence to fix the only home he has ever known. But considering what remains here, is this even a world worth saving? Artyom didn’t know the world before this and thus lacks the wisdom to answer that question.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2121588041

This isn’t a world you want to live in. But it is one you can get immersed in. Navigating the lost and lonely tunnels of the metro provides the player with context for the new world of 2033. A dark place, something to be feared. A place featuring the most complex and authentic aspect of any post-apocalyptic society: the emphasis on the human element. Specifically, what would human beings actually do in these circumstances? Tear themselves apart, obviously. But that’s easy and lacks nuance. Metro supposes a hypothesis, one that makes a lot of sense the more the real world transitions to a more global society. There’s a strong emphasis on group identity over one’s individual identity, and it’s prioritized by a lot of the characters we come across. There’s each metro station’s identity which translates to real-world regional identity, and with that comes conflicting ideologies from the metro’s occupants. There are Nazis and Reds, naturally the extreme form of collectivism, regimes taking advantage of the situation offering protection in return for controlled groupthink. And Artyom’s journey forces him to confront these competing ways of life violently.

The Secrets it Keeps

The tunnels also hold other secrets. Mysterious creatures born from the preceding nuclear war. Generic monsters, maybe? But each encounter acts differently and all of these beasts behave differently from the other. Encounters with humans, which are handled with your typical stealth or run-and-gun approach, are wholly different from Artyom’s encounters with monsters. While it doesn’t make the combat necessarily innovative, it does provide enough variety to make most situations feel unique. Your combat situations will alter depending on your play preference and the resources you have at your disposal. Ammunition is scarce in the metro; sometimes a more subtle approach will suit your needs best. Situational differences – not having ammo, getting spotted in stealth, lacking the most efficient weapon – develop from each combat’s varied manifestation. Nothing is really original, but it comes together well. Damn well.

Metro is almost a genre unto itself. Originally born from the novel Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, then produced into a movie (Stalker) by the great Andrei Tarkovsky before being turned into its own book Metro 2033, it finally made its way into video games (S.T.A.L.K.E.R.). Expect a shooter with science fiction and survival horror aspects coupled with a story-first approach. Metro is a game about survival and overcoming odds articulated by fantastic narrative moments and action set pieces. You are meant to feel overwhelmed. And feeling that way creates honest moments of dread. The story is relayed through one-sided conversations with the game’s characters (Artyom is silent during these interactions) mixed with loading-screen diary entries read by Artyom. It’s a really good way of debriefing between the action and a lot of Artyom’s character is revealed in these monologues. Don’t skip them.

Conclusion

The Metro series is a well-kept secret in gaming circles. It’s the video game equivalent of a cult classic. Those in the know – really know. There’s simply no denying that the foundations laid here in the original have been built upon and refined into one of the great video game trilogies of the modern era. I recommend them all, but you need to start with the original. It introduced the right amount of everything. All elements of gameplay, storytelling, and immersion are all so perfectly balanced that it’s plain to see why so many people have quietly admired it over the past decade – and why, eventually, it spawned a trilogy.

The beginning of one of the great survival tales in video games, this is a must-own for fans of all the sub-genres it utilizes. As an immersion-based apocalypse simulator, Metro 2033 came together beautifully. What was once a game for 2010, is still a game for now, and likely a game for all time.

9/10 (excellent)

This is a very satisfying shooter with an intriguing story line and wonderful atmosphere. I was pulled in immediately and didn't want to stop playing. It may seem a bit older, but feels very good for the most part, aside from wonky AI and using items. Stealth, firefights and exploration along with a gripping narrative make this a game definitely worth playing.

I love the Metro games, the franchise and the Books. Metro 2033 is a great survival horror first-person shooter game with a deep and great storyline that is based on the book Metro 2033 from the author Dmitri Alexejewitsch Gluchowski. Metro 2033 has a great atmosphere and a nice Karma system. You can play the game full Rambo or Sneaky beaky Like. In my eyes Metro 2033 is a must have for every survival horror game fan.

I'm totally brand new to the Metro series and I can fully recommend this game to anyone stuck during the COVID-19 Pandemic and have nothing else better to do. I'm looking forward in purchasing Metro Exodus after the completion of this game. This is a great first person horror survival game that gives you options to play in face pace or slower pace. As a russian speaker myself I find the russian accents funny but when you meet the germans with russian accents it becomes funnier. I'm surprised the demons also dont speak russian in this game. Love the developers and thank you!

Better to play the original one, because this one will most likely ruin your game. Being grabbed by demons ? Say hello to glitch when you can see the whole level from under the map. Playing trolley combat mission ? The worst part. Will eat your nerves, because there is a high chance that you wont be able to rotate the machine gun, if you are playing with the mouse and keyboard. The game is full of bugs and i have my 1.5 hour progress ruined by the level with trolley. I'm so pissed off.

    + Perfect atmosphere
+ Resource management is unforgiving which creates tension
+ Guns feel decent to use
    + Story is good

    - Human models are very unnatural
    - Large portion of the game revolves around trailing behind a slow NPC without being able to do much

    SHOULD YOU PLAY THIS GAME?
YES! BUY IT! I HIGHLY recommend. WHY?

    STORY
IS AMAZING!!! Metro 2033 isn't your average shooter. It´s a great STORY! You can complete the game like man who killed everything or you can play stealthy and kill nobody.

Metro 2033 is a first-person shooter survival horror video game developed by 4A Games and published by THQ.
The story is based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel of the same title, and is set in the ruins of Moscow following a nuclear war, where the survivors are forced to live in underground Metro tunnels. YOU play as ARTYOM twenty years young man who must save his home station from the dangers lurking within the Metro.

SURVIVAL Mode (stealthy, survival-horror gameplay, you have to wipe your ammunition and filters to your gas mask and must scavenge for bullets and other useful items from the bodies of dead enemies or from caches.)
I RECOMMEND if you like a chalange to start play on SPARTAN MODE on RANGER or HARDCORE RANGER DIFICULLTY completely disabled HUD.)
