Über das Spiel
Meridian was released in 1996, when few people had heard of the Internet. It became well-known for its exciting player-vs-player (PvP) combat system, often setting alliances of guilds against each other. It has been running almost continuously ever since. In 2010 it returned to its original creators, and now it's open source and completely free. Come and see the game that started it all!
After creating your account and logging in, you will customize your character and select your initial skills and spells. You start in the town of Raza. Right-click on signs to learn the controls and basic combat. After passing through a glowing portal, you will be transported to the main world, where you are free to explore. Don't be afraid to ask other players for help!
Meridian is completely free--there are no purchases, in-game or otherwise, and no advertising. If you would like to donate to keep the servers running, you may do so on our Web site.

I know, it might be outdated when it comes to visuals, but give it a try.
mmo-rpg, first 3D one.
Create a Character, learn Weapon Skills and Magic and fight with other Players.
WOW and others are quite based on PVE, but not Meridian 59... PVP was the toughest in quite all MMO's
You will train your character in PVE but you must always be watchfull, just a few save spots are available.
You can fight with others and you're also able to talk to them, to everybody on a server or to your opponent...
Kill or get killed and look for revenge XD

Before they implemented a monthly subscription plan, players were charged by the hour or by the day (can't remember).
Great privilege to have been witness to a historical moment in MMO history.

The game play features good ol' hack n slash as well as magic. There is one Weapons school to master and 6 magic schools to master. When you begin playing you will create a character with RPG stats. These stats make a big difference in what types of things you will be able to achieve during your play time. For example, a high INTelligence is required to learn multiple schools per character. High Might and Stamina will allow you to carry more and achieve higher hit point levels, respectively. Mysticism is used for mana gains and total mana. There are a couple other stats and I *** URGE *** you to go to https://m59wiki.webmaus.net/ or http://www.gilcon.net/meridian/ and read the information about choosing statistics. There are also posts by helpful people here on Steam you can read. It will save you a lot of frustration.
The game is comprised of a huge number of map areas of various sizes. Each map has 2 or more exits connecting to other maps. The load time is almost instantaneous. Each map (there IS an Automap!!!) has different enemies of various strengths and hit points. The monster leveling system is not like many games today that level the enemies to match your strength. If you go into an area you aren't ready for, be prepared to run away or be thumped. :) There are a bunch of weapons and TONS of different spells to use, which keeps things interesting as you level up and achieve greater power.
There are quests to complete and group events to participate in and Guilds to join to make new friends (it's rare to find a player that's a prick) and adventure with. There is a robust chat system that makes communication easy. There's also personal mail and player bulletin boards to post/reply to (globes). The game has tons of Lore to learn, items to acquire, reagents to collect , plenty of gold, fun places to explore, and lots to learn about. There are two servers you can join. Both include PvP and PvE, but server 102 is very safe and friendly if you just want to enjoy playing and not hunting each other. If you want more PvP, choose server 101.
I've put many hundreds of hours into this game over the years and it's still a lot of fun to play. There's so much to do. Players are needed! Give Meridian 59 a try!!!

UPDATE (STEAM VERSION ISSUE):
Although Meridian 59 is open source, the admin of the Steam version (who isn't the developer) has returned in the comments to prove what bitter and insecure narcissist he is by trying to justify his censorship of the existence of community servers. This guy legit refers to Meridian 59 as HIS property and has been reported to read players' private in-game chat messages.
Since the admin of the Steam version (who is not the actual developer) took the liberty of perma-banning me without warning for mentioning another server in the community hub, I feel inclined to post this here.
The Steam version has numerous issues
-Concurrent players are in the 2-7 range.
-The 1996 UI may have you use text commands more often than you’d like.
-The admin is an insecure, passive aggressive, self-righteous manchild who thinks he basically owns Meridian 59. I found out after sharing my story with other server communities that he routinely bans people that upset his sensitive mood.
There exist servers that are actually very alive and well
-Server 105: Has 30-50 players at all times and an active Discord. Runs a newer game version with some gameplay and UI improvements and the same PvP-focused endgame. Has an optional alternative client with a modern UI. The same client features the 112 German server.
-Server 103: Lots of community developed content, including richer endgame PvE in the form of new bosses, Meridian’s first dungeons, and the whole new desert continent.
-Server 420: Newest of the bunch, runs the original classic version (same as Steam) but has a 400% increase in XP and gold.
About the game itself
Having grown up with 90s' video games, I fell in love with Meridian 59's aesthetics as soon as I saw the game years ago. Beneath this charming exterior, the game basically has you grind through hordes of monsters across a few biomes much like Diablo 2. There's no crafting, and questing is fairly useless, featuring almost only delivery quests that give you an NPC's name without their location. With all of that aside, I have found the game's greatest potential to be in the classless skill system, which allows you to freely mix different schools (elemental, holy, combat...etc) and level each skill up as you use it.
On a final note, the game is not very easy to get into due to the lack and bad indexing of online resources, but you can always go to Gilroy's or the Meridian 59 Wiki and manually search there. Not to mention that many of the people still playing on 105 are extremely passionate about the game and would give you a great deal of advice and occasionally even free items!

It's history.
It's for free.
Why are you even reading this?
Go play it.
A short story of what happened to me playing this game.
Friendly newb mage, looking for ways to learn new spells. Walz into Tos in search of spells.
Tumble into the Inn where I meet two strange looking bards just hanging out.
Eat some food, proceed to get very drunk and ask them where I can learn spells.
Guys help me out and show me the way. Actually find a place where to learn new spells.
On my way back I find an ice cave. Explore the cave all the way, past enemies that could probably kill me in 2 hits.
Find the boss creature, a giant Yeti. Yeti kills me in 3 hits. I wake up in hell, surrounded by several portals.
Climb stairs to the portal furthest away from me. Fall back into the lava. Try again and finally make it.
Got teleported right back to the very Inn I started from.
Proceeded to get drunk yet again with my 2 new bard friends.
Seriously. Go play it.

I had multiple failed attempts to get a proper login to this game, and one suggestion sent to me now appears to be a site that Steam is flagging as a malicious site!
AVOID THIS GAME ! There are plenty of better implemented nostalgic revivals out there instead.

This is a very difficult game. This is a very hard core game. One that involves old school mechanics which are mostly out dated at this point.
There is a wiki, use it a lot. It will help you ask less questions and act more like you know what you are doing.
http://gilcon.net/Meridian/
The community is great however, and when they are on, they are helpful. You will need them, talk to them, they love you and eventually you should love them back.
If you want an easy mode then google the Ogre client. Play that. It's for babies which is why you might sometimes find me sucking on my pacifier.

Meridian59: The Internet Quest Begins
Meridian59 is quite a special game, whether it's the cheesy sprite-based characters or the rockin synthesized soundtrack there's just something about this game that warms my heart, despite never growing up with it.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1573458019
Before the dawning of other classics such as Ultima Online, Everquest or The Realm Online, there was a little game known as Meridian 59. Debuting in 1995 it boasted impressive 'pseudo-3D' graphics in a first-person perspective similar to other games of the time such as DOOM, Wolfenstein 3D and Heretic. It relies heavily on community interaction and PvP combat. (There's also PvE as well)
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1573455790
The art style is goofy and dated, but lovable all the same, while the soundtrack is consistently high-quality and exciting. Meridian's UI and overall presentation is simple, yet just enough to get the job done, and i can appreciate that. One of the more interesting features of this game is the chat box and it's functionality not only to talk to NPCs or players in the world, but also to type in simple commands for your character or other essential player functions, which is unique yet also somewhat confusing.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1573456160
If you're a newcomer like me, figuring things out such as 'where to go' or 'what to do' can be a somewhat daunting task since very little is actually explained to you outright. Thankfully, several kind fellows on the internet have saved you the trouble with a few useful guides, if you know where to look. Still though, this vagueness does make the learning curve somewhat steeper than what many more casual players would be welcome to.
The combat is... interesting. It's in first-person obviously, and reminds me somewhat of the melee combat you'd expect in a game such as Heretic or Hexen, albeit much more laggy and unresponsive. The monsters however are unique and varied, and quite fun to dispose of.
PROS
+ Classic 90's FPS feel wrapped in an MMORPG world.
+ Wonderful soundtrack with plenty of catchy tracks.
+ Friendly in-game players always happy to help out.
+ Very unique, player driven experience.
+ Experience is much better with friends.
CONS
- Confusing quest system.
- Not very much is explained. (And it's very easy to get lost.)
- Playerbase is rather low. (And it needs YOUR help.)
- Unresponsive and laggy melee combat.
BOTTOM LINE
Whether you're a retro buff like me, or a brave adventurer seeking a new challenge, Meridian59 is a golden piece of history well worth checking out if you've got the time and patience for a little oldschool game design and besides, it's completely free so there's no excuse not to give it a try!
I hope you found this review helpful and if you did please consider giving it a like.
See you on the next review!

The admins are very active and host events frequently. This is a game that looks simple initially, but has some serious depth and culture. It's a blast from the past that sucks you in, making friends along the way all while providing every opportunity to become great. Try this game, you wont regret it.

It does. The graphics are crap and the interface is clunky by today's standards, but that is not what makes M59 special. The best part of this game has always been the community, and the overall gameplay.
The first, and best thing is that this game is actually hard. I mean like really, actually hard. Not WoW hard. Death has consequences. Die, and you will wind up naked in hell(well, the underworld), far from your corpse and loot, and you lose xp and stat points.
Your actions have consequences. Killing non-evil players and mobs results in you slowly(or not so slowly) turning evil yourself, which has an effect on what you can do in the game.
The community is still good. I didn't have to play for long before someone offered to help me find my way around and level. This is huge in an older game like this where there are no online world maps(there are area maps) and there are both pk's and deadly mobs in many spots. There are several active guilds, and your guild can have a hall. Halls can be captured by rival guilds, which sets up some interesting gameplay.
I'm really enjoying my return to the game. It's worth a shot, especially if you enjoy interaction more thant just whacking things. There's a good online resource for info - http://www.gilcon.net/meridian/. It's an older site, but has the map(s) you need plus a great deal of valuable info on how the game actually works. Plus, cool 90's web design ;) and no, it's not going to be readable on your smartphone.
Honestly, the pvp mechanics of this game are much more balanced than many subsequent MMO's. If you are at all interested in retro gaming or just something that's actually cool and different, get this. I've yet to run into anything really like it in the nearly 20 years since I first played.
Hope to see more folks trying it out!

Imagine 10 players vs 10 players in a battle, coordinating their fights against each other with a mixture of spells and weapons. A few moments into battle someone realizes they're being hit by 6 of those players and can't escape fast enough, being killed. All of their belongings free to be looted.
When the game first came out, this was a harsh way of playing MMO's, but it's one of the reasons the game is still alive today - some of the old players hoping to get that adrenaline rush once more before they are too old to enjoy life.
To give you a history lesson, when Meridian 59 came out, Ultima Online shortly came out (taking most of the player base) and then Everquest a year or two later. Shortly after, 3DO shut down the game, but Near Death Studios reopened the game to the public. Meridian 59 became a game for veterans and hardcore players for several years, and dwindled down its player base over 15 years due to spreading out the game to different servers hosted by players and lack of content.
Over the last 20 years the game has evolved through players who had played when they were growing up. Over 10,000 hours of development have been randomly added to different versions of the game which unfortunately have come and gone.
The game is old but no other game has mastered the life & death effect quite like Meridian.
So if you want something different, looking for an adrenaline rush or want to push the envelope on life & death, give this game a try. When you finally take control over the game you'll find plenty of enemies to kill, especially other players.

The PvP is epic and Death has a steep price. Murdering innocents can turn the server against you as players will hunt you down and not even death will remove the stain of your actions. Unless pardoned by the elected justicare you will forever be an outcast unless you are part of a very strong guild. 10/10 this game will amaze you even with the dated graphics.
