Having said that, the RT in RTS is a bit of a stretch for Men of War, since you'll be spending 90% of your time playing either on pause or on extreme slow motion, manually reloading each individual soldier's rifle, manually parallel parking your armored cars under enemy fire, manually walking AT guns and mortar crews into position. All of this extreme micromanagement occasionally feels rewarding when things go right, but mostly the game process drowns under its burden.
Despite this, I would recommend Men of War for the sheer chaotic scope of its battlefields, the realism and the dopamine rush when a carefully concocted plan finally bears fruit (spoiler:almost never happens)

I love MOW, it's probably one of my all time favorites however the sands of time have not been kind to this game or series for that matter. If your running Windows 10 and modern hardware (I'm running an RTX card) you'll likely come across the EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION, this has effectively killed the game. Plenty of forums up on this issue with no real definitive fix, though some lean towards this being Direct X with any fixes fairly hit & miss, but almost always temporary. I can confirm this issue is not just limited to steam, having some of the Men of War series also on GOG, they suffer this fate as well.
Considering this game is from 2009 your best bet is to run this on a much older OS and drivers (compatibility mode has not worked under W10). This same issue is prevalent on Assault Squad (haven't got AS 2 to confirm) and Red Tide. Vietnam just dumps to desktop and the original Face of War (yes pre Men of War) also crashes out.
Whilst I understand this series is now quite old it's a shame 1C has simply left this to rot especially as this has a significant fan base still. For those wanting to play this style of game you may want to consider Call to Arm - Gates of Hell: Ostfront (DLC). It apparently uses some of the assets from the MOW series.
Should a patch ever be released that fixes this issue you can be sure to say I'll update this review to reflect

Pretty fun game, it's old and can be a clunky at times, but it's one of the games you must try, in my opinion, at least in the strategy genre. By the way, the voice acting in this game is so horrible it still makes me laugh to this day

So if you want a better looking game with active multiplayer and more mods, go for AS2, but if you want a great campaign experience, go for MoW, it's pretty cheap aswell.

The missions are pretty varied and honestly it still is fun to play even today with newer editions in the series. In terms of the campaign there are a couple of ways to play:
- Easy: I want to play the game and have fun messing around (It's honestly not even super duper easy on easy)
- Medium: I want a challenge
- Hard: I want to die lots
The game also has an editor, with loads of guides around on Steam and YT so you can make your own maps and skirmish missions. I'd recommend this game as it always seems to be dirt cheap. My advice would be to sort out the controls and configure them to how you like straight away (this may take some playing around). The voice acting sucks but meh - it adds to the clunky charm of this game and it's still super enjoyable to me!

That said this is an old game it is unfair to compare it to a game that was released a decade later it is clunky in comparison and was not scripted with QWERTY keyboards in mind so you might want to change your bindings
Men of war is the true definition of a hidden gem people can be put off because its dated now the voice overs are not professional but i'm pretty sure when i bought it all those years ago i could only play in Russian i find the English voice over highly amusing as it reminds me of a boring BBC history documentary and doesn't really get the emotion in there but once you get past that and start to command your units you move past it.
there are 2 main ways to play be default and just go where the default commands want you to go or select a unit and direct control him to get that perfect shot. Some people find the game unfair as it is you against hundreds but if you take your time plan your ambush and angles think twice you will be fine.
The game is not that hard anyone who says it is, is playing wrong as once you are comfortable with it you will be embarrassed about struggling on easy

The campaigns are mechanically different and feature different atmospheres and environments. Soviets fight across the USSR , The Germans fight in the North African desert, the Americans fight in urban cities with more of an emphasis on stealth. All of which are enjoyable.
Overall the game is a fun experience that your computer should be able to run by now since it’s an old game

Every vehicle, every soldier and objects like crates have their own, fully functional inventory. Every weapon is a real item, every round fired is a real item. Every grenade, knife, helmet, repair kit. Even MGs from vehicles can be mounted and demounted, to be used on a soldier or another vehicle for example. Vehicles have fuel and can be refilled with fuel barrels. Fuel barrels can be used to pour fuel on the ground for fires or for explosions.
Everything is fully simulated and based on physics. Everything has accurate armor models, bullets can overpenetrate or bounce off and hit something else, fires can start and spread out and cause big explosions, shock waves can destroy everything, even houses.
Usually all houses can be entered. They have full interior, are fully destructible, tanks can drive through them etc. Again: EVERYTHING is physics based and FULLY simulated! This is absolutely insane for an engine made in 2004.
You can also control any unit directly. This turns the game into some kind of 3rd person shooter. Oh, and did I mention yet that its fully modable? Own units, own 3d models, own weapons, maps, music, ... you can create whatever you want, and implement it into the game. Not only in singleplayer, but also in multiplayer!
This game is an amazing piece of software and a lot of fun. The campaigns are great and full of cutscenes, the soundtrack is nice and the multiplayer mode (only available in LAN/virtual LAN now as it used GameSpy) supports many maps and modes, mods and even sandbox-like modes like free-for-all with custom resource settings or whatever.
If you like deep RTS games, this absolutely is a must-have. I can't recommend this game enough really. It's totally mindblowing how many possibilities you have.

In this game you micromanage everything. You control individual soldiers right down to managing their equipment and clothing they wear. You control how they move and if they are prone, standing or crawling. You control vehicles and their crews right down to managing their fuel supplies to ensuring each part of the tank is properly maintained. This intense amount of micromanagement is made even more challenging by the number of units you're expected to command. Some levels are small scale guerrilla skirmishes, but most are set piece battles involving upwards of a hundred soldiers and dozens of vehicles.
The game is a realistic story about the Eastern Front that shows the entire timeline of the war. The game starts during Operation Barbarossa which means crappy tanks, poorly equipped soldiers and desperate situations. Tanks are represented in the numbers that fit the history. Tanks are either rare or fragile anti-infantry tanks like the T-27 or BT7 (27,000 destroyed in 1941). The historical weaknesses of formidable tanks like the KV1 are represented (few numbers, fuel heavy, slow, easily to break down) while the weaknesses of the USSR are also fairly represented (inefficiency, poor equipment, disorganization). This game was made by Ukrainian developers and it shows. Most of the social critiques are realistic rather than propagandistic, unlike the Canadian made Company of Heroes 2 .
The game follows two characters that push two narratives of the war. One becomes an officer, while the other becomes a guerrilla fighter and later a penal battalion conscript. The officer goes through the pivotal battles of the war like the Battle of Moscow, while the guerrilla fighter shows the darkest side of the war such as the largely forgotten disastrous Battle of Rzhev. These stories come together to create a balanced perspective of the war and USSR.
