Note: This would be the Third installment of the Men of War games that is separate from the Assault Squad variants.
Realism
Let’s start off by the realism part of this game. Everything and everyone can be looted. Their bodies do not disappear like that from the MoW: Assault Squad games. Yes, that means you enjoy the bodies of your enemies for the entirety of the mission. When it comes to weapons, tank models, ammunition, they have it all. I haven’t seen a RTS that as this much information on literally everything; even the soldiers are given each their own name. The finer details from the tank variations and what the soldiers carry to the usage of camouflage and hiding in the bushes to deter the enemies vision is all done very well.
Depending on the missions and if you have a big enough gun, you can use craters to also reduce the chance of being hit, hide behind tanks, inside buildings, behind a tree or even use a small box for coverage. Everything in this game is used in your advantage and can become your disadvantage just as quick. Need more ammo, grenades, or even a new type of gun? Grab it off your comrade or the corpse of your enemy. There are interface options to help to highlight your fallen comrades and the enemies, including their guns to help for easy pickings. What about when it comes to enemy vehicles? Yes, if you can kill their crew outside of their tank (quick and quiet) and you’ll have yourself a VI Tiger.
Again, everything is useable in terms to use against your enemy; you just have to outwit them in order to use it.
Bugs/Needs TLC
There are bugs and it shows throughout the games. I haven’t had any that would Crash to desktop, but I had plenty that would make the enemies do bizarre things. One example is trying to kill an enemy in the house with a tank, grenades, etc. and he doesn’t die, but can literally stand there and kill all of your men. Other times are your stealthy low, prone, quietly – with no one else around—and a tank shoots you off from the distance – eh?? The game also run a little less optimized than its previous titles. I recommend you save and save OFTEN. In case a bug does show up, you can just reload it and wait for a new bug to happen.
Challenging
I’d say this is probably the hardest installment of the MoW series (that isn’t Assault Squad). Most missions you are given a squad of soldiers and that is it. It depends on the circumstance. Some missions are easier than others, but they also become extremely difficult if bugs play into the equation. The AI also tends to swam you a lot quicker in this installment that previous titles where they would just sit there and defend their posts. Here, they hear a gun shot and some of them just run after you.
When situations like this arise, I’m unsure if these are bug related or AI related or even a little bit of both. Some missions really just question how this was even done in the first place or may even look impossible. Just know, everything is at YOUR disposal if you can surprise the enemy.
Verdict
Even with the bugs and the game needing some tender, love, and care; this game is still a good challenge and a fun one at that (even though frustrating at times, too!). Between the campaigns and bonus missions, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth and see a bit of the Eastern Front historic battles (more or less).

This game appears to have been rushed. It really lacks the polish of other entries in the series (especially the later Assault Squad games but even the original Men of War was a vastly better product). There are a number of bugs in almost every mission, many of which are not actually very difficult fixes within the GEM editor. For instance in some missions the devs have allowed you to control soldiers that aren't actually supposed to be assigned to you, so they are invincible and also cannot kill anyone... rather frustrating.
In terms of the content, the missions are all very much the same. You have to clear rows of enemy defences with a small number of troops and then defend against a counterattack. If I'm honest the bonus missions were not even really that fun compared to other entries in the series. It's a time sink, but not necessarily a good one.
My genuine recommendation would be to buy either Men of War, Assault Squad 1 or 2, Vietnam or even Red Tide as they are usually the same sort of price but are just much more polished products. It's a shame really that they didn't release any patches to fix the game because I imagine with a little bit more it could've been way more enjoyable.

Best of all, there were a few soldiers to utilize. It was less an RTS and more of a tactical game you could incorporate RTS elements in.
I loved that game a lot. Kept looking for more like it everywhere. Looked through Wikipedia, and found Men Of War: Assault Squad. I bought that game... and was disappointed. It had the same functionalities, true, but the battles were more open-spaced and grand, you'd be attacked through multiple fronts, and so would have to macro-manage rather than micro-manage. Overall, it was more of an RTS with tactical elements if you managed to get some breathing room.
Then I tried Men Of War: Condemned Heroes. I was not disappointed. It was practically an extension of Soldiers, with an overarching plot element that lends to the story. Furthermore, unlike Assault Squad, every mission was different. You didn't have to rush A, B, and C to win. You had to play smart, find your way through enemy lines, or get good chokepoints to set up defensive perimeters. With just a few soldiers, you'd have to take down entire regiments.
It was fun, and worth the price.
