For a cute little tycoon-ish sandbox game - this is definitely a win. I absolutely love aquariums in real life and the fact that I get to design my own is tops. HOWEVER I would really like to have my precious whale shark earlier than making me work my butt off to get to 12 (just to officially end the level). Either way, this is definitely an enjoyable game. 10/10 would recommend - if you like aquariums or not.

Achievement hunters: This one is easy - just enjoy the game. A single play through will get you all but... 4? Then all you have to do is play around in the sandbox to get the rest. Hope you love it!

Honestly I really enjoy the game. I played through the entire campaign and have moved on to just building my own aquariums how I want. They do a good job of teaching you how the game works in the campaign and also have an already huge selection of marine life for your tanks.

Only thing I would add to this game is a Undo key, to undo previous actions if you sell the wrong fish or so on. And another would be to move the camera around with just your mouse, so sometimes you can just sit back and play with the mouse.

Other than that I love this game and recommend it to any ocean lovers out there, or just even aquarium lovers.

I really enjoy the gameplay and the sandbox, and in most games, I usually have a preference for one over the other. I love the amount of creativity I have. The only thing I'm missing would be tiny tanks for single small fishies. Not sure if that'd be workshop fix, or a dlc fix. I'm hoping the game hasn't been shelved and that there will be more creative dlc (maybe additional floors instead of just one huge floor, or build-a-tank, and of course fishies!). The workshop itself has some amazing creators and I find myself wanting more content from the workshop than I ever did when playing sims. I highly recommend this game. It's not the amazing life-like 3d quality graphics, but it doesn't need it, the game is so satisfying. And did I mention so many fish? I love fish. Would love game recommendations for games similar (even if no fishies).

I wish there was a neutral option on if I recommend this game... I played for a little less than 2 hours and ended up getting a refund. I know some people will absolutely love this game, that's why I wish there was neutral option because I'm very torn. I was super excited based on the videos and pictures of the game and the positive reviews, but after playing for a little bit, it just feels too hollow for what I'm looking for and the excitement I had did not carry through into the game play. It's very focused on the requirements for the fish and what they need to thrive which is great, but it lacks in the sense of business management and other similar aspects. It basically doesn't scratch the itch of what I'm looking for in a management sim. I was to manage the employees, money, etc in a much more detailed way than this provides. While I love the idea and the coziness of it, it just doesn't scratch the itch unfortunately. Maybe I will check back in the future to see if anything has been improved.

Many aquarium games come up short when creating their gameplay mechanics. Not this one! You have a diverse fish roster, each with stats that make this game seem like a strategy game at times, and it even goes out of its way to introduce sessile organisms such as corals. A simple game, but a great one!

Also I put a giraffe in the aquarium. The modding community is a treasure to behold.

I really do like this game a lot. There's a wide diversity of fish and learning about their needs is really fun! The developers have done their research and it's a great game to play.

I do have a few complaints, though. Being able to set your default Aquarium theme would be nice, like they are in the simulations in the level stages. The music does get repetitive, though nice, but definitely after your 15th hour playing, you'll want to set up a playlist in the background. I wish there was a way to select multiple objects, maybe even duplicate the set, would make for my Longquariums to do better. It'd be cool if you could duplicate full Aquariums as well, but that might be a bit much.

One last thing is that, after a certain point, the game lags due to how many guests and fish are in the Aquarium; that might be due to my little laptop, but also might not. Maybe it's just my imagination, the clock runs the same while my employees are super slow with that lag.

Regardless of my complaints, however, I have thoroughly enjoyed this game and highly recommend it to everyone who has interest in these kinds of games. The Freshwater Frenzy is nice, a little complicated for me, but a nice change of pace for sure and I'm sure helps give a refresher to the gameplay, pun intended. Really hoping for some more DLC so that I've got another reason to go back through and play some more!

As advertised, Megaquarium is a zoo-tycoon-esque game focused around managing a public aquarium. I'm not exactly au fait with zoo management games or honestly management games in general, but I've always enjoyed visiting public aquariums in real life and wound up putting quite a lot of time into this.

The core features that make up the gameplay mechanics strike just the right balance of simple and complicated in a way that makes it not too complicated to get to grips with but are complex enough to be satisfying. The game's primary campaign feeds these mechanics to you piecemeal in a way that lets you get accustomed to them one at a time, and it's basically an extended tutorial for the sandbox mode which will probably ultimately be the primary mode for most players who put hours into the game. The game starts you out with the basics, which is primarily centred around satisfying the requirements of your animals. Like you might expect, your fish need to be fed the right food regularly, but additionally their water needs to kept at the right termperature and it needs to be kept filtered for quality. For this you need various kinds of equipment to be attached to each tank. Some fish require tropical temperatures and others might need it chilled, and some might demand a higher water quality, etc. etc. These basic requirements apply to all your animals but most will have more - for instance some will demand plants, rocks or caves in their tanks. Some predatory fish might eat smaller animals if you house them together. Some might not want to be housed with others of their own species, while some might need to shoal with others of their own species etc. etc. you get the idea. Balancing these kind of requirements to house different fish in different tanks hooked up with the right equipment is the primary crux of the game, and it's fun once you've got it down. There's a pretty solid selection of animals to display in the base game, and with the freshwater expansion there's a ton. The game also has Steam workshop support that adds an absolute truckload more, so you'll have all the fish you could ever want.

The secondary crux is all about satisfying the guests to the aquarium, as that's how you make money. As they view exhibits, they'll generate prestige points which help make your aquarium more popular, and research points for unlocking new animals, tanks, equipment etc. - as such you want to make sure your exhibits are as visible as possible, that there are clear pathways for guests to to travel through that'll take them through a route will take them past everything you want them to see, and that their needs are satisfied and that they keep spending money during their visit. This adds a little more challenge back into the fish management part of the game, because all of the equipment you need to keep your fish alive takes up room and guests don't like to see ugly machinery out in the open. This means you need to use walls to hide it away from view while using staff-only doors to allow your staff access while keeping your guests out. This leads into the game's primary challenge, of designing a layout for your aquarium that allows for staff to access equipment and tanks in an efficient manner while also keeping things practical and convenient for your guests, while also keeping things looking aesthetically pleasing for yourself.

Staff have stats that determine what they're intrinsically good at, and earn experience over time that allows them to level up their skills. There are several skills, but the most important ones are the ones that determine how good they are at feeding animals and how good they are at fixing broken-down equipment. Both of these things needs constant attention and are vital if you don't want to have dead fish on your hands - this is something you really don't want because every time an animal dies in your aquarium it gives you a permanent prestige penalty. Certain fish are more demanding to feed than others and the heavier equipment that you'll need to maintain your larger tanks both break down more often and take longer to fix, so having staff with high skill to speed this up is vital if you want to keep your big-ticket exhibits maintained. This is where problems started to creep in for me, especially once I started trying to make really big aquariums. To put it simple as possible, staff aren't very smart and will frequently try and take on jobs above their skill level unless you disable their ability to do so. Frustratingly, no matter how low an employees skill is, so long as they have at least some skill in a certain task they'll be able to do every job available in the aquarium regardless of how demanding it is by default - you have to go into their advanced settings and disable their ability to do advanced tasks manually for each employee individually. This isn't too much of a big deal when your aquarium is small but when it becomes large you might need dozens of staff to keep it all running, so having to micromanage every staff member to keep them on tasks suited for their skill level results in a ton of annoying management overhead that feels like a huge distraction. Staff's pathing AI isn't very good either, you can sometimes see them bouncing between tasks at opposite ends of the facility rather than ones that are closer together. There is a zoning tool that'll let you restrict staff to working in certain areas , but it's clumsy and fiddly to use and the zones you can make have an annoyingly small upper size limit. I really think this area of the game needs some better streamlining tools or just needs to be simplified outright.

There are a couple of other small annoyances I have. Firstly, forget the fish, the guests are the real animals here. They have needs that periodically need filling, namely hunger, thirst, need for rest and the toilet. The thing is, once they start to feel one of these needs they'll only search within a rather small area to satisfy them. Basically, if they get hungry and there's no vending machine right there in the room with them, then they'll take the huff and go home. The stuff you need to put down to satisfy them isn't too space-intensive so it's not too serious an issue, but it doesn't feel very true to life. I never went to an aquarium in real life that was absolutely festooned with toilets and vending machines like the ones I found myself building in this game.

The game's graphics are also somewhat simplistic, which is fine honestly, but with one real exception. The collision and movement AI of most of your fish is pretty basic, which is alright really because you won't spend that much time looking at them very closely, but it stands out more with the bigger animals. Once you start housing some of the larger sharks for instance, you can see that they don't turn very convincingly and that they clip through decorations in their tanks. I mean I get that this a management game at the end of the day and not subnautica or something, but I feel like a little more effort on things like this for the large fish that draw the eye even when you're zoomed out wouldn't have gone amiss, even if the smaller animals are fine as they are.

Oh, and the game's music is good but also kind of repetitive, so you might want to make your own playlists to listen to in the background. I use the Abzu soundtrack and various tracks associated with underwater areas in the Metroid series.

Ultimately despite my gripes this is still a really addictive game. There's more than enough in the core game to keep me satisfied but with the expansion content playing it has become a habit for me. If the premise of the game sounds interesting to you then you should probably at least try it. I feel like there are improvements that could be made, both in future expansion content or perhaps in an eventual sequel, but the game's a lot of fun as it is right now if you like management games like this or if you enjoy visiting aquariums IRL.

I'm a zoologist, admittedly not a marine biologist though. I adore the focus this game puts on backstage care, the snappy, satisfying feel of building, and the complex needs of the animals that makes me get out a real pen and take notes to keep my fish straight. Despite being deeply complicated, everything is expressed clearly and simply with easy-to-read icons that, when hovered over, give detailed explanations, making all difficulty intentional and non-frustrating; it feels like a puzzle, not a hurdle. The sound effects are some of the most satisfying sounds I've ever heard.

This is the first zoo game where I've enjoyed campaign more than sandbox (which is a huge compliment to the campaign, NOT an insult to the sandbox, which is customizable and fun). The workshop is alive and thriving with talented modders who make the game more enjoyable than it already is. I recommend either buying the game at full price, or waiting til it's on sale and purchasing with all DLC (as I did). If you have to pick one DLC, get freshwater; it adds new mechanics and equipment that shake up the inevitable monotony that comes with any management game.

A few criticisms/suggestions:
-In campaigns, often the aquarium will come with pre-painting, which will carry when you expand the building. I love this. It's sometimes frustrating to have to paint every sandbox aquarium fresh, especially since I know from campaigns that it's possible to make paint carry. I'd love a setting in sandbox mode to give the whole aquarium a base coat of paint.
-More tanks would be nice, especially more rounded tanks and interior corners, as well as maybe some bigger tanks (though the workshop makes up for this).
-More simple paints would be nice too (though again, workshop adds plenty).
-Freshwater ground texture makes it a little hard to view some of the animals; it's a little too busy. Even in first person mode (which I LOVE, thank you for first person mode, more zoo games need this) it can be hard to spot certain species.

Minor nitpicks in an incredible game.

Think I've put enough hours into this by now to give it a little review.

On the face, it looks colourful and simple. Don't let that deceive you. There's a considerable amount of depth - no pun intended - behind the simplistic art style. You're building public aquariums, and likely going to be making many of them. I've collected every achievement in the game (Three times now, they add a few with every big update/DLC), so I've had a chance to go through all the 'content' as it were.

There's a campaign in the game, and one for the Freshwater DLC as well, but none of that is mandatory. It's just good fun that also eases you into the growing complexity of all your water-borne friends. As it happens, taking care of fish is no picnic. You need to be wary of the sizes of tanks, what fish you put together with other fish, the type of ornaments that go in the tank and so much more. Once you're done with the campaign, you can make your own challenge via the quite customizeable sandbox settings. Or just go ham with full-on creative mode - unlimited money and everything unlocked from the outset.

This game is a fun little time-waster that drew me in, even though I've never even really wanted to have a real fish in a tank before. For me, a lot of the fun is the part where I see the money trickling in and that all my guests are leaving only positive reviews of the place. My cleaning staff are olympic sprinters, to ensure not a single thing left on the floor stays there for too long. Another fun aspect is trying to combine varieties of fish in new ways, while also keeping their insane demands in mind. Some fish might harass or eat other fish. Some wants plants to hide in, others want caves. Some want lights, some wants darkness.

If there's any current drawbacks, it might just be that you're restricted to '1 floor', as it were. The latest DLC as of the time of writing adds stairs and tunnels going underground, but neither of them actually lead to a new floor for you to work with. Personally I'd love to be able to work with a bit more elevation, but it's not a huge issue. Even if restricted to just 1 additional floor up and down and I'd be pretty happy, to be fair.

It could also be fun to be able to save whole maps and put those on the workshop for others to see and explore. A bit more incentive for people to make several aquariums by letting us toss them out there and show them off to the rest of the community.

A bit more UI improvements could also be handy. It's a mess trying to go through your employees to find out who's doing what, and you're also currently restricted to a set limit of worker zones that you can make. You can mark areas in certain colours and assign people to only work with things in that area, but some aquariums will inevitably grow too big to only make do with 20 such zones. I'd like for there to be no limit on this feature.

The ability to 'group' or 'sort' your employees would help a ton, and maybe some other ways to navigate the aquarium with a bit more ease. Granted, these things are actively mentioned in suggestion-threads for the game, so we're hoping they're addressed in the future. For now, I readily recommend this game - Even at its default pricetag, but I could also see why some would prefer to wait for a sale, just to be sure.

I am a huge fan of this game.
I first played it on the Switch but had to deal with it crashing more and more as I approached completion, the Freshwater DLC also was not available on Switch (good call because it would be unplayable, Megaquarium is a brilliant game but I do not recommend the Switch version).

Replaying this game on Steam was a great idea. The game runs perfectly even in speed mode and you don't have a fish limit (you are limited to 200 fish per scenario on Switch which is very annoying). This made the campaign brilliant fun. The Freshwater DLC is also really enjoyable, they've added some great new features (tanks, breeding, more things for staff and guests) and it is all available with the existing content in sandbox mode, allowing you to really go wild with tank designs.

All in all I have a fantastic time on this game. 10/10, would highly recommend.

Interesting and cheaper than real aquariums. It's also easier n the back. All my kids are old enough they have all left for school/own lives out in the world. Surprised me how much of the labor they did.( Truth be told they did better with the hobby than I ever did. This game is as deep and intricate as you want to go.

When I first bought this game it felt very basic and wasn't all that much fun. After picking it up again it's now exactly the kind of aquarium game I was looking for. I've spent most of the hours playing in the last week and really can't find anything negative to say about the experience. Great job on continuing to develop the game into something that's really fun.

I've played Megaquarium since release at this point, and I have to say, it is one of if not my favorite game to have come out in the last five years.

A lot of modern management games skip out on the whole management aspect in exchange for more creativity- Megaquarium however, feels much more like a classic management game in that the focus is on the management. That all said, vanilla on its own is a very fun experience and you definitely have room for creativity. I will say, if you are looking for a sandbox with the freedom of Planet Zoo- this isn't your game. This is a management game, not a sandbox. But if you want a genuine management game with some puzzle aspects, this is a good game for you.

To start with the basics, Megaquarium is pretty simple in premise- build an aquarium, and manage the livestock, staff, and guests.

Of the three, staff are the most barebones- but they still have some depth, and being by far the most vital of the three I think it's fair they are more simplistic- afterall, making the backbone of your aquarium more challenging to manage than the animals might be a bit annoying.

Guest management is mostly focused on meeting their needs, which are rather simple, but in this game more than any other management game I've played, it is very important to manage their movement, too. Making sure guests can navigate your aquarium easily is vitally important, not just for keeping the guests happy, but also making sure they see every aquarium and generate the four resources of the game- money, ecology, science, and prestige.

Ecology lets you unlock new fish, science lets you unlock new equipment, and prestige is how you level up to new ranks. Ecology and Science are basically two variants of the same thing- which actually feels good, as it can be a balancing game of making sure your aquarium is making both. Prestige is a pretty dynamic resource gained from a variety of things but only in small amounts- making sure your guests can get prestige from as many sources as possible is thus very important.

Finally, the livestock. The livestock is by far the most fleshed out part of the game, as you'd expect. Your fish, crustaceans, turtles, jellyfish, etc. all have specific, puzzle-piece like needs. It is a balancing act of putting animals together in ways that are inexpensive and efficient. Without spoiling too much, there is a lot of variety in the species and their needs, and you have a lot of possible combinations, but some that you'll find more rewarding an effective than others.

The game runs very well and is easy to get into but can become challenging with the higher difficulties and/or higher ranks. The campaign in particular starts out as a tutorial, but as it goes on begins to morph into unique levels that all have their own challenges that make them all feel special and fun. It feels very natural and smooth of a transition.

The game also has a huge modding community with hundreds of additional animals and scenery pieces to expand your options, and include your favorite animals.

Now, as much as I love this game, I can't say it doesn't have flaws.

Most notably, guests feel a little too barebones. They meet their needs, look at tanks, that's about it. They aren't completely devoid of personality, but they could seriously use something else to do.

Additionally, the game does become somewhat formulaic once you know how to play. This can be fixed with self-imposed challenges or mods, but the first is still self imposed, not part of the game itself, and the other makes the game easier at the same time, so they both have their flaws.

At the time of writing, the only DLC for the game, Freshwater Frenzy, is a HUGE improvement on the basegame, and is one of the best bang-for-your buck DLC's I've ever played. It's $12 at full price, and you get nearly an entire extra game's worth of content from it. I highly recommend you pick it up with the basegame, or once you complete the campaign if you're not fully convinced.

Hopefully, the devs will give us some more DLC that expands the game in other ways that the DLC didn't- making guests feel more alive would be a great change. :)

if you are having an existential crisis and desperately need something to micromanage this is the game for you.

Pros:
- you can hire and fire staff that can help you
-decently customizable aquariums
- easy to navigate
- very easy to organize with re-naming and zoning thats color coded
-extremely fun for passing time
-easily re-playable on harder levels
-you can NAME YOUR FISH
-each challenge is actually harder then the last and in story mode unlocking things actually feels like an achievement

Cons:
- fuck these customers there is literally a bin RIGHT THERE
- if you cant remember what size each fish will eat or not you have to open like 5 windows for a decently stocked tank
-if playing on a laptop with no mouse you WILL get stuck in first person mode at least once.
-there are no warnings before an autopsy report if one fish is pestering the other or in danger or being eaten
- having to play jenga so that your staff can reach all the items around the tanks especially in the later stages

if i could add anything it would honestly be more decorations like; murals for walls information plaques, floor decals (besides the giant white arrow ) and It would be really cool to be able to customize the outside appearance of the aquarium. If there was also an option to have filtration above or below where customers can see or adding cat walks or the ability to walk over a filter/heater on a bridge would help.

Overall I really like this game and i would recommend it to people who really need to feel control over something in a healthy way.

Superficially reminiscent of the ‘tycoon’ games of the late 90s and early 00s, Megaquarium reveals itself to be an under-developed and disappointing slog through the soporific world of aquarium management. As nameless administrator of a handful of rooms floating in a blue void, you must keep alive enough fish to entrance the visitors endlessly turning up at your door. Do so, and they’ll furnish you with money, reputation points – allowing you to level up from a shack with few goldfish in a tank to extravagant multi-level displays of sharks, turtles and corals – science points, which let you invent bins and better filters, and ecology points, which let you invent new fish.

But beware! Your marine menagerie comes with a headache-inducing panoply of needs, and will punish you by expiring if you fail to meet them. Some will eat their smaller tank mates, others are bullies which will torment ‘wimps,’ others will die without a certain quantity of rocks or plants furnishing their tank, and still others require a minimum or maximum numbers of other kinds if fish if they are not to perish. Assembling a multi-species wonderland of piscine prettiness involves mentally solving a kind of sudoku grid of these needs. Get it right, and nothing much happens. Your completed tank will sit there, passively generating points. Get it wrong, some fish will die, and you’ll have to figure it out again and tinker with the tank until it ceases to be an aquatic slaughterhouse.

I went into Megaquarium hoping for a pleasantly diverting management game, but found it too undercooked to be rewarding, and too frustrating to be relaxing. Unlike, say, Rollercoaster Tycoon, building tanks and filling them with fish is a largely repetitive and thankless process. There are few logistic or staffing complexities to add interest, but enough difficulty in wrangling opaque needs to make failure frequent and punishing. Aside from filling tanks, there’s really not much else to do. Plopping down new rooms, toilets, decorations and the like is fairly perfunctory. There is a ‘creative’ mode which strips out economic and other management considerations, and a first-person viewpoint which allows you to admire the handsome fish models up close. But Megaquarium isn’t really graphically enticing enough for such a sightseeing trip to offer much reward. Meanwhile, objects and decorations materialize from thin air when placed, aquariums hang suspended beyond any sense of place or reality, and staff and visitors alike mill aimlessly, perhaps with a coloured pack of fish food or ice cream cone suspended in front of them. The soundtrack is dreary boppy EDM muzak presumably purchased in bulk; I turned it off five minutes in. In short, Megaquarium clearly suffers from limited development resources that rob the game of any charm or personality that might otherwise have enriched this dreary ordeal.

Reader, I must confess I gave up on Megaquarium midway through the campaign. If the Steam achievement stats are to be believed, so have many others. I wouldn’t waste your time. For players looking to mess about in a simulated world rich with possibility, Rimworld and Oxygen Not Included are vastly superior toyboxes. For those looking to relax with a solid and rewarding slab of management good times, I found Prison Architect to do a much better job of simulating your worker bees and their captives bustling about and butting heads.

Absolutely delightful gaming experience. No prior knowledge of fish required (last time I cleaned a tank was in my elementary school science classroom) but it helps if you love 'em. There's all kinds of critters in here (especially with the dlc) and I think it does a good job of balancing easy to follow gameplay with realistic setbacks and challenges. The mod community is amazing to boot, I'm still only dipping my toes in the water but there's all kinds of good sh*t out here (from simple cosmetics to huge custom fish packs). Give this puppy a shot if you like any kind of building, management, or caretaking sim! (Might be a little educational too? I can for sure identify more fish on sight now, but obvs stuff like unique behaviors and needs have been simplified. It's still a great jumping off point for learning more!)

An excellent harking back to all the best management sims of yesteryear. Some UI elements are a bit fiddly, which can result in misclicks, but it's very rare that minor mishaps cause lasting damage. The actual game environment itself is well-styled, adorably animated, and the aquatic creatures are so detailed.

Things can slow down a bit at higher echelons of research, but for the main part everything is paced really nicely. Campaign mode has a great structure to introduce you to the bulk of the game, freeplay lets you build the aquarium of your dreams.

It’s fun! Maybe because I think aquariums are cool!

Some fish are incompatible with others, and require different things, so it’s fun to balance making community tanks

Pumps can be connected together by connecting them to the same tank, which is neat because that means I can have a single equipment room for multiple tanks

I will say the game itself is easy, and the graphics are nothing to write home about, but it’s a relaxing game, and you can go into first person mode and walk around your aquarium!

You will enjoy it if you like aquatic life, or if you like sim/management games! It’s a great game to get your feet wet in the world of simulation games!

I have spent 10+ hours in the campaign mode and it is so much fun to discover new specimen, different kind of tank and equipment. I particularly like the walk through mode which you can zoom in and walk around to look at your aquariums in a first person camera view.

As a fish keeper myself, this game is pretty accurate to real life. You have to really pay attention to all of the fishes needs, and requirements, as well as water parameters to keep them alive. Overall game play is easy, but does have quite a few different difficulty options for even easier/harder play. Which is great for those looking for a relaxing management game, or even a stressful one. First person viewing is a nice added touch so you can walk through your creations. Gave me a lot of Zoo Tycoon 2 nostalgia, especially if you had the aquarium expansion!

A great management sim! This is probably my favorite genre so maybe I am a bit bias, but I found the campaign to have just the right balance of complicating factors. As a casual player, the normal difficulty allowed me to get by without much micromanagement. On this difficulty, money was only a problem for me at the start.

The sandbox offers a wide variety of custom options if one just wants to build, or experience a tough growth path. I do wish there were more campaign scenarios, and the workshop has not really delivered there. I can easily overlook some missing polish and a few rough spots when so much of the game is enjoyable.

There is a performance patch in the works but I was able to run the game at 2560 x 1440 on my budget hardware, getting 60 FPS for all but the end of the final campaign level. I rarely try a resolution that high so no complaints here!

Megaquarium is the game I've been waiting for so many years, as after the release of Fish Tycoon in 2004 the market has been devoid of any quality aquarium games. With tons of fish with unique care requirements and interesting customization options, Megaquarium appeals to both dedicated fish hobbyists and people who just want to have some fun building their own aquarium. Between the campaign levels and sandbox modes, Megaquarium offers endless fun from perfecting the layout and look of your aquarium to breeding the perfect colors and patterns for your fish. This game is worth every cent and definitely worth picking up!

Without hesitation. The base game is solid, with readily understandable mechanics, a user-friendly interface, a solid campaign, and a decent stable of creatures. It's the mods that take it to the next level - Megaquarium is very friendly to modding, and the community has taken full advantage of this. My current sandbox build integrates a wide array of prehistoric and modern animals, and I am eagerly awaiting further installments in the Project Artificialis mod project.

It takes a while to fully appreciate this game for what it is, but it's worth it.

    PROs:
    - Loads of different species with different requirements, so you'll have fun figuring out what to keep together in a tank, and it will likely be different in every scenario.
    - A wide variety of different settings for the sandbox mode, so you can make it a real challenge (or not).
    - It can be very relaxing because you're never forced to act - when you have a working ecosystem, you can just sit back and watch guests admiring it.

    CONs:
    - The graphics are quite basic, so guest mode is not as captivating as the other zoo-themed games out there.

Very fun management game. The animal requirements make sense, and the scenarios are very fun. On easy mode, it is extremely relaxing. The UI is easy to understand and the building process is very simple compared to other management games (that isn't to say that it's not customizable or uninteresting). Overall, very glad with my spur of the moment purchase.

This game deserves so much respect!

As a long time fish-keeper, working in the industry and rescue centres over the years, this is a fresh way of expanding your horizons. If you are new to fish keeping, or are a long time nerd, this game incorporates both. The single player campaign starts easy and increases in challenge as you go along, teaching you everything you need to know. Whilst, those who need further challenge can access a vibrant and amazing community hub of mods and extra items. I honestly have massive respect for the brains behind this. It is fantastic!

Wow I really enjoyed this! Very reminiscent of the tycoon type games that made me first fall in love with gaming to begin with (RCT, Theme Hospital, Pharaoh, AoE ect) it was nostalgic even though it's new. The visuals are very basic but everything is really clean and easy to understand, the UI is basic but all the information you need as you play the game is well presented. The progression is well balanced adding new elements as you go and the DLC campaign added some welcome challenge for those wanting more after completing the base game. Building tanks and taking care of the guests is satisfying but it did become a little overwhelming especially in the finale mission of the DLC but overall it's a pretty chill game and great just to unwind and relax. The music is very repetitive so you'll most likely want to find our own chill tunes after hearing the same couple loops a million times but it is catchy and suits the game well. The huge levels like both finales become very stuttery and laggy even on a 9900k oc'd to 5.2ghz on all cores so def some optimization issues. The game also used barely any gpu as well so kind annoying and immersion breaking but this was only an issue very late game on massive levels so I think it's actually the engines fault which I'm assuming is Unity. Tons of variety of species/decorations/tanks ect especially once to add in the DLC which imo is really great and a must have if you enjoy the game. Could spend even more time playing this on sandbox mode but I've beaten both campaigns and feel it's well worth the money. Highly recommend to tycoon/management sim games. 8.8/10

    Love this game.
Addictive. Simple. Just enough challenge and content to keep the game constantly growing. I love the framework that was created; and since the release of the workshop tons of new fish, mods and wonderful ideas have streamed into the game. Its a blast and it's really got this chill vibe.

    Graphics 9/10
Simple, stylized, works great on my high resolution monitor
I've really grown to love it's simplicity and how it gets really immersive. You can spend hours fine tuning a layout or you can really quickly bang out a new expo wing; whatever you want it's there. Absolutely review workshop content and get extra plants and decor

    Audio 9/10
I didn't feel like this was a ground breaker in terms of audio, but considering the small team it does the job.
The fish splash the machines buzz; there's even this relaxing fish tank gargle that I kinda love. Id be fun if a bit more depth was added here but I'd say it does the job and it does the job well. The soundtrack is catchy and feels fresh, could be expanded but for people who love simplicity; this does it!

    Gameplay 10/10
Theres amazing depth in this game, especially now with the new content pack; it just feels like a real wonderful playbox where you can just keep growing this massive aquarium and add all sorts of bobs and ends to every fish tank. I never felt like something was too over the top; or really over done. It's just got this really loveable simplicity that has really hit the target on creating a great vanilla base game; where I felt the home run was really hit is the ease of mods. Its got a community that really quickly just fell in love with developing all sorts of variants and there's just something so pleasing about building this huge fish tank where every fish is happy.

Love the game; and for the 20 bucks; I've gotten my moneys worth and more. Many relaxing hours, I'd say the challenge level is like a 7 or 8. It's perfect for kids, young gamers, or adults. It's got this really easy to understand formula for how to play and I'd really recommend the whole package. Get in there and gotta breed/buy/ and display em' all!

I love this game! It's almost like a puzzle game as much as a management sim, with how you have to make sure the fish are set up properly so they don't eat one another or make their tank-mates unhappy. It's a calming game, not particularly challenging, but with enough complexity to keep you on your toes. There's always something to do and new goals to work towards. Super fun!

Megaquarium is a casual relaxing and fun building simulator. There is no real challenge in this game as everything is laid out in a calm and simple manner. The only challenges you will have is correctly putting different kind of fish together in one aquarium. It is pretty easy to figure out what your animals need to survive. The campaign is fun to go through and not very challenging. The best part of the game is the calming simulation game play. You do not have to worry about anything derailing your aquarium like disasters. If you figure out how to lay out and keep your fish alive, you will have a great time not overthinking how to play this game. The only negative I have is sometiimes when i try to click on a specific fish in a aquarium to move is sometimes you end up moving the whole aquarium which is annoying, but nothing major. It seems a little expensive at the full price, but any saie is worth it. You will get lost in this calm, relaxing and fun building simulator. Must for any tycoon and casual gamer.

A fun and easy game to pick up and play. A great casual game. This game reminds me of Euro Truck Simulator 2 where you can do anything you want. It does have missions and those missions teach you the basics of the game. The graphics while they are low poly I like them. The fish are colorful and if you zoom in enough you get a first person view of the fish and tanks. So you see what the guests see in your park. The game is never pushy and it allows you to go at your own pace. Also the file size is very small under 500mb so its not gonna take a huge amount of space on your pc. Its also very cheap right now at under 20 bucks that includes the DLC that I bought. I played on normal and had no issue with the first mission.

So if you like Fish and don't want the hassle of cleaning the tank and taking care of them this is a good game to get. You can just kick back and walk around your aquariums you made. A really fun game.

Very fun, chill, and addicting management game. Easy to learn and relaxing to play, but still provides some fun challenges of laying out space effectively and efficiently, making sure your staffing costs don't run out of control, and above all else, balancing the needs and traits of different fish species to create fun and interesting exhibits!

Definitely recommend this one, and if you're looking for an added challenge, the Freshwater Frenzy DLC adds a lot of depth and cool new features to the game as well.

It's pretty great if you are interested in aquariums. It's always been sort of a pipe dream of mine to have a public aquarium and this is exactly that. The campaign is great so far with fish and corals unlocking at the perfect rate. It's pretty easy, but it's meant to be more a chill game. Would I say it's worth $24.99? It depends. If you're really interested in fish, then it is easily worth it. If not, then I'm not sure. It's a decent enough management game, but the main draw is making your own aquariums.

Lovely game, can’t wait to get my hands on the freshwater expansion. I thoroughly enjoyed the original game and made my way through the campaign missions, now need to start the sandbox and build my dream aquarium. The joy is how you can design the aquarium exactly how you want. It feels a simple game, but still challenging. Look forward to more from the devs if this is the quality we can expect. 5*s

What a modern zoo tycoon: marine mania would be like! There are a lot of really cool features in this game that make it really close to Zoo tycoon's DLC packs back in the day. If you liked any zoo tycoon game it's really a must have.

    Pros:
    Cute graphics
A lot of ability to customize things (tanks, decorations, etc.)
Ability to unlock and level up workers
Challenges in the game itself (you will get quests by mail to do while also managing your aquarium)
Everything isn't super cheap; which means you really need to manage vs. just playing and accumulating tons of wealth
    Challenging
Has mods so that you can freshen up the game if it gets boring

    Cons:
Parts of game are a tad confusing; The game didn't really explain that you can level up your workers (so for a long time they'd be sitting there are level 1)
Game doesn't seem to have options to sell certain fish in tanks. If you have a fish that likes to be alone and didn't realize... you can't just click on a particular fish and then sell them. The only workaround I found for it was to create a whole new tank then put the fish into it and then sell the whole tank. Could be easily fixed with an option to sell fish when you click on them.
Lack of decorations outside of tanks.
Lack of many facilities zoo tycoon had

Hoping that they add more and continue to make this game better

This might be the best bug free game on steam. Everything always works, no crashes ever. What a fun relaxing game, with mod support. Excellent replayability. My only minor issues are that some of the plant's graphics look poorly designed (love to see them updated), and size scale of fish size is strange for the tank size. 10/10

Megaquarium is an excellent indie aquarium simulator. That's a pretty small comptetition, but it's great fun all round. Especially if you like aquariums like me. It's got a decent (if slightly fiddly) UI, a happy vibe and a long campaign. If you enjoy tycoon games like Zoo Tycoon or Parkasaurus, this should definitely go on the list. I initially thought it would be fairly simple, but the tank requirements for each different kind of fish are actually really varied, so there's plenty to think about when trying to work out which fish can go in which tanks together.

    Additional
+ It's got lots of real fish, with realistic requirements
+ Long campaign (which, judging by the Steam achievement percentage, most people haven't touched)
    + Nice background music
+ Huge variety of tank requirements
    + Educational

    - The biggest problem I have with the game is being able to plan an aquarium with a route. The visitors come in and leave through the same door, so you can't have an entrance and exit. They ignore the floor signs, and basically just wander about aimlessly until they're tired and go home - which makes it impossible to create a one way system where visitors are funnelled through the aquarium. It forces you to build a large sprawling aquarium where everything is just separate blocks with space around them.
    - The's game's viewing angle is really weird. After 20 hours I never got used to it. It's using orthographic instead of isometric, which makes the map bend and distort in unusual ways.
    - I'd like to be able to move multiple objects at once. Moving a tank's supporting maintenance room is a pain
    - How to heat a tank is really clear - you just have to have a heater with a temperature which matches the 1:1 size of the tank. Water quality is super confusing though. There's a filter, a protein skimmer and a nitrate reactor, but I have no idea why there are 3 separate devices, and the game doesn't give you any clear information about it.
    - Managing staff has the same kind of approach as planning the aquarium - you end up just spamming enough staff to feed all the animals

This is one of the few games me and my wife play together - it's relaxing but it also makes you think and plan ahead, as a real sim should. MEGAQUARIUM is pretty much perfect - not too hard but not too easy either. You'll have to consider many factors (which fish can be placed in the same aquarium, how you'll spread your staff, research etc.) but the gameflow never becomes overwhelming and always gives you an out if you make mistakes. According to an aquarist friend of mine, the fishes' preferences for food and companions are quite realistic too, so that's something, I guess!

This game has been made by a tiny indie team (a pair of brothers and their 3 friends from the pet shop, it seems), yet it's more stable and polished than many AAA products of late. You do not have to wait for a sale to get this one, it's worth every penny, in my opinion - not only because it's such a polished and tight experience, but also because it's clearly a work of love. I have a soft spot for those, like most people who love video games.

If you need a sim that's weirdly relaxing yet also challenging, MEGAQUARIUM is for you.

When I bought this game I already knew that I probably would love it as I really like aquariums. The game has different objectives that one must complete along the way to level up and to be able to unlock other aquariums in different locations. I got the Fresh Water Frenzy addition the other day, it definitely is worth it. The graphics are realistic and one can chose how challenging they want the game to be for each aquarium location. I definitely would recommend this game to other people. Also the game is on sale until August 12 so if anyone wants to get it at a cheaper price now would be a good time to consider getting it.

This game requires you to keep track of which fish are which type and which type of fish are not allowed to be in the same aquarium as other types of fish, etc etc. But the UI isn´t optimized for this, really making it a drag of a game. The rest of the game is easy, but this chunk of the game requires so much clicking around it will be your challenging factor.

A nice and quite simple management / building sim.
The base game is much easier than the DLC, so if you are lookingfor more challenge, get the Freshwater Frenzy.
As in other games like this, you manage your staff and build your aquarium filling it with more and more species of fish. The only challenge here is to match the fish in the tanks so that their living requirements are met.
The campaign is smooth and will easily let you get all the achievements.
What I liked most in the game was its cool relaxing atmosphere, you are only focused on expanding your facility and not dostracted by unexpected disasters.
One more thing I liked is the flexibility of the building - you can expand it in any way you want and can get the desired shape.
All in all, I really enjoyed the game and highly recommend it.

This is a great aquarium builder, I'd love to see an update to the graphics in the future (something along the lines of Zoo Tycoon) making the critters seem more real, and to be able to walk around like a patron. I'd also love to see a mobile version, I'd play it all the time on my phone is it was.

This is my very first review I've written but I feel like this game is a hidden gem that's worth the praise. Definitely the best of any aquarium/tank management game. It's realistic enough to provide a challenge with tank maintenance, but not enough for it to pull from the casual fun of just building your own aquarium and running it how you want. Devs have also proven time and time again, they listen to issues or suggestions the community has and does their best to make it a game they can be proud of.

This is the very first game that had very positive user reviews that I actually didn't like that much. Not to say it was a BAD game, but I found it boring. I found the UI to be uninspiring, and as other negative reviews said, not as customizable as I'd wished.

I wasn't a big fan of the graphics style. It seemed a bit to simplistic and because of the low polygon-style, many of the fish looked the same with just a different colour.

But, it seems I'm in the minority in not enjoying this game. So I'm not sure if I do or don't recommend this? For me it was a no.

As you can see by my play time, I really REALLY enjoy this game. I used to play a lot of Zoo Tycoon 2 when I was younger, and this hits just the right spot. Although Megaquarium is relatively simpler, I still find myself engrossed in it. The management and strategy aspects are easy enough to pick up but get more complex as you progress. This makes it very rewarding when you're able to set up a good system. Then you can just have some time enjoying your critters move around and eat!

Regarding the graphics, they are cartoony, indeed, but I think it only adds to the charm of the game, especially with all the cute animals. Plus, the wonderful mods made by the community and the sandbox mode give Megaquarium endless replay value. I've also heard that the game is pretty accurate when it comes to animal care requirements. While I can't judge for saltwater, the freshwater expansion was on point!

In short, if you like fish, you have to give this game a try!

A very good and enjoyable public aquarium management sim/tycoon game. Complex enough to be interesting but not intimidating. Not yet found any time pressure in game, so you can take your time and get things just right. In fact, that's generally the way to do things. Rushing often involves missing a detail and you'll risk losing valuable livestock! Stacks of content, animal types, aquarium designs, equipment and more.

Really enjoyable and definitely recommended for those who like aquatics, marine biology, tycoon and management sim fans.

Looks like an extremely rare update to pump interest to buy an overpriced DLC, that again, in my opinion, should be part of the original game and game mechanics.

    Only buy if heavily discounted.

    A cute sim.

Have just wrote the following comments into the discussions and so might as well copy it here.
The amount of time this game has been played by me (only 3 hours) indicates my captivation on this particular sim (I have played most SIM games over my 45+ years of gaming).

    So, my comments were;

Too expensive and DLC contains what the original should have by default, primarily, breeding.
I do not mind DLC if priced right, but 10 pounds UK plus the original cost for my game for a cute but average sim.

Of course this is my opinion and will not follow the view of everyone, but I think I shall be avoiding (buying the DLC).

4 Pound and I probably would have added it (the DLC) to my large collection.

Easy to make mods for. Although some modders make things that really don't mesh well with vanilla, I have to say this is a good game with a lot of mod potential.

It's cute and fun. Maybe a little repetitive in the unlocking cycles, but worth checking out if this type of game seems to appeal to you. I'd probably wait for it to be on sale first.

Surprisingly deep business management sim with a lot of opportunities to specialize and train employees while also balancing customer needs and finding the right balance of tanks and pumps. It's a lot more complicated than I was expecting on the highest difficulty, and finding more efficient solutions becomes more and more valuable as you progress along the tech tree.

This game is similar to Big Pharma and Production Line - which come from the same developers - so if you like either of those you'll find a lot to like here. It's different enough from either of those to buy alone but familiar enough to see similar business management tools.

I loved this game. I took a break from it for quite a while, and I think that might've been because the initial campaign levels were quite repetitive. I still think that those levels were a bit of a slog, but despite that, I still came back, and I got hooked all over again. Part of the fun in this game is finding a way to get all of your equipment into a workable and aesthetically pleasing layout. In that way it's a little like a puzzle game where you design your own puzzles.
The AI frequently phase through each other and overlap, but honestly, it didn't bother me. The game would be significantly more challenging if only one staff member could exist in a single space. As it stands, it's kind of funny, keeps the difficulty down to a simple level, and does not detract from this game's charm.

Suprisingly relaxing and fair management game. The crises feel not random at all and the game mechanics are clear and well explained. To my surprise - I had much more fun than in Jurassic World: Evolution - JW:E is shallow compared to his title (the animal interactions are on the same level in both games, sadly...)

The workshop content is amazing, and I'm really looking forward to sinking more hours into this title.

As an aquarist in a public aquarium, I LOVED this game. It took so many real-life concepts and animals and beautifully applied them to a video game in easily digestible terms. I'm just impressed.

The simulation scales quite well, and the campaign mode is both interesting and walks you through the increasing complexity with a smooth learning curve.

My only real complaint is that the 1st person exploration mode is under-cooked with no higher resolution assets; but you'll spend 95% of the time top-down anyway.

Megaquarium is a pretty chill management game that understands you want to have a lot of fish to look at without also feeling like you're doing your taxes. Things can still go wrong if you aren't thorough, such as when I forgot I only had one toolbox, so the poor soul carrying it didn't have enough time to repair everything before several fish died. The drive to keep expanding and improving your aquarium comes from needing visitor impressions and money to afford and unlock the new fish, tanks, etc.

This game was really well done. It was a treat to play but after 24 hrs I feel like I've accomplished everything and don't have anything to pull me back into playing. Need some downloadable content with more missions. I'd easily give you another 10-20 bucks.

Well worth it. Sometimes I just watch my fish swim around. It's relaxing at the end of a long day. I wish there were more challenges. And more fish. You can never have too many fish.

This is a very charming and sometimes challenging tycoon style game, harking back to the Themeparks and Hospitals of yesteryear. It is very relaxing to play and I really enjoying creating my own aquariums over the course of the campaign. I would heartily recommend it to anyone who is on the fence.

The basic idea is to build tanks, furnish them with the correct accoutrements for whichever fish you would like to stock them with and then to ensure they are supplied with appropriate heating and filtration. Then you must hire staff to feed your organisms and give talks to the customers. The customers shower you with ecology, science and renown points which allow you to unlock different species, equipment and theming items.

The challenge is that each species has a particular set of requirements and some species eat others. You must create habitats fulfilling all these requirements to satisfy the guests and advance through the levels. It isn’t that difficult per se, but it is taxing enough to provide some extra layers to what is a very chilled out game.

Despite enjoying this title, there were a few aspects that I found frustrating. It was quite hard to discern information about your tanks, their contents and their status and you often find yourself with an awful lot of menus open. It is a minor annoyance, but one that crops up again and again.

Another element that I found to be flawed, both aesthetically and mechanically is that your aquarium essentially exists in an infinite plane of “blue” and is not situated in “reality”. This has two important problems for me. The first is that it was hard to see my aquariums as an actual place and more of a “virtual simulation” and second is that this allows for seemingly infinite expansion of your aquarium, making space a non-constraint in your plans and designs. I think it was a missed opportunity to really play with the mechanics and force the player to make use of constrained space, like a real aquarium would be. Some of the classics in the genre used this tactic frequently, for example, levels in Theme Hospital with smaller buildings.

Overall I think this is a phenomenal effort for a small team, I really enjoyed it and loved the attention to detail with the descriptions of the fish and how lovingly they were modeled. I think there is a great opportunity for more content in the vein of freshwater species and perhaps a lot more themes and scenery items. I hope the team consider making an expansion for this one. It’s a very novel setting for a game and I think they pulled it off admirably.

While the base game is a little limited right now, the mods available make it FANTASTIC. You can be lazy and just play to relax, or go all crazy and try to build insane aquariums with every type of fish and tank. I really enjoy it.

I did all 10 campaign missions over a period of 41 hours. You might say I like this game.

The challenge of this game is in growing: making sure all the species you have in a tank are compatible, having efficient staff, and optimizing your space are all challenges that you'll run into. Mistakes can end up in the death of your specimens through errors in compatibility or lack of food.

That being said, overall the game is laid back—a great way to spend a few hours unwinding after work.

Also, even after playing all 10 campaigns, there are quite a few late game specimens I want to explore in Sandbox; will probably start some games around level 8 or 10, and build out a high-level aquarium or two.

Lastly: This game is by the same guy as Big Pharma, which was a great game. Go check it out!

A very simple zoo type simulation that plays more at the level of a mobile phone app. This does not require a lot of strategy or management, but might be good if you are just looking for a relaxing game.

Really great simulator/managing game. You can be really creative and there are a lot of fish available. Graphics are more cartoony but the gameplay is really fun.

As someone who grew up on Zoo Tycoon 2 I was incredibly excited when I heard about this game. I bought it the second I could. Of course, my Macbook that I was trying to play it on barely ran the game and it lagged horribly, but I couldn't stop playing, despite the lag. This game fills my heart with joy and it makes the inner fishkeeper in me so happy. I can't recommend it enough, and I also can't tell you how happy I was when I played it for the first time on a computer that could actually run the game and I could really experience the game fully. It was the first thing I opened when I got my new computer, so excited to see my little fishy friends without the lag that always accompanied them.

As for the actual game play, The mechanics work well and are fairly accurate to the fish species they represent and I adore the models of the fish, my favorite so far being the Lumpsucker. I don't exactly know much when it comes to critiquing the actual mechanics, but that it's really fun game and it works well. That's all you really need to know.

I think the only place I could see this game improving are some of the animations. While they look fine from above, I noticed the humans in the game have some odd animations sometimes, like when they go to sit down on the benches. It's just..not great. Along with that, the characters' won't actually hold any items as far as I've seen. These are small nitpicks of course, but it's just a little odd compared to the much better animations for the fishes. But this is a small nitpick and doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the game.

Overall, I adore this game and I'll be playing it for a long, long time. It's an incredible simulation game and the are fish adorable, the challenges fun but challenging and I always love discovering the new fish and items each time I level up. If you're thinking about getting this game, it's absolutely worth it.
