Über das Spiel
The game is inspired by real medieval technology and the way people built architectural works and mechanical equipment using medieval technology. Medieval Engineers strives to follow the laws of physics and history and doesn't use any technologies that were not available in the 5th to 15th centuries.
Medieval Engineers concentrates on construction aspects, but can be played as an action game too. We expect players to avoid engaging in direct man-to-man combat and instead use their creativity and engineering skills to build war machines and fortifications. Medieval Engineers shouldn’t be about troops; it should be about the machinery you build.
Medieval Engineers is the second “engineering” game developed by Keen Software House. The first one is Space Engineers, which sold over 1 million copies in its first year and is still a bestseller.

The building, in particular in creative-mode, may be nice, but the use of blueprints which are essential for some projects (for example me building something alike the roman-germanic border and thus wanting to copy the watchtowers over and over) constantly leads the game into crashing.
Also the GPU is brought to it's limits by a game which doesn't have very outstanding graphics, not even water or many differenc NPCs or blocktypes...
The game may have become a great one if the developers would have put more serious effort into it. But as it is today it is only a nice plaything for when being fed up of another game and just wanting to build along...

-Sound ist verbuggt (und zwar so nervig, dass man sich das echt nicht lange geben kann).
-Spiel hat irgendwie immer wieder Laderuckler, fühlt sich nicht flüssig an.
-gameplay erinnert irgendwie an jedes 0815 survival game

This game had SO MUCH POTENTIAL but KSH would rather milk Space Engineers for cosmetic DLC instead of actually finishing a game they've started working on(though quite frankly I'm just glad they didn't beat the corpse of the game by releasing half-baked cosmetics for this game too)
I've tried playing the game since 2020, but the sheer lack of base content made me go to mods within the first hour.
Do not buy this game. It is 100% abandoned and there is only so much the modding community can do to keep the game playable.

This game runs on the same engine as Space Engineer does. That means controls are very similar if not exactly the same as that game. The only difference between Space Engineers is that this game is no longer developed and has a medieval theme with focus on using wood and stone to make castles and siege equipment. I wish the game didnt get abandoned so that it could get much more polished and more content for its theme.
Because this game is abandoned i cannot recommend buying it. For existing owners i would recommend using mods and modding the game to extend its playtime.

Lastly, thee combat is really lacking and almost seems unfair at times to me as the AI of the enemies is not AI more than it is something that can hit harder than you and has more HP than you.
On a positive note, you can build a Catapult or Treb to fling your friends around.... about the only real fun I had in this game.

This game might be fun with a vast and I mean a vast amount of players, but I could never envision such a crowd of players and in the end it would have been the players making the game fun.
Its a very empty world and definitely not as interesting as the other game from keen software house such as space engineers.
This game just does not do it for me and I do not recommend this game, even if it looks interesting in the trailers and videos, after building your pathetic building or castle, and find out that the siege equipment just does not work, boredom will set in and show the reality of a wasted purchase.

Keen software has to be the dumbest retards I've ever seen. this game had a community, but they didn't care at all, since this game didn't sell as many copies or more of space engineers, so they straight up chucked this abandoned gem of wasted potential right off of a cliff and acted like it never existed.
Core game play is there, building aspect works better than SE in my opinion, and being able to create my own siege engines is actually fun, since as long as its stable, it'll work.
However, this game is an empty shell of what it could have been. its tiring to see games with so much potential being cast off into the nether realm of nonsupporting devs. after seeing the amount of work that obviously went into creating this game in the first place, and hyping up a community waiting for this game for 3 years, only to see it abandoned because Keen wanted to make an Xbox port for SE instead of supporting Medieval engineers, makes me never want to play another Keen game again, as now its hard to say when they'll just up and abandoned another waste of hardware, that doesn't net them enough money in their opinion.
Furthermore, this game hasn't been updated in over a year. crashes constantly happen when going through inventory, and dropping items will crash your game almost always. performance is questionable at times, and like every other Keen software game, the god damned night time lasts waaay too fucking long and daytimes last like 2 minutes at most, worlds are basically empty apart from the odd building or a deer that doesn't mean sh!t, and while building, sometimes its legitimately impossible to make a structure 100% sturdy, which results in these wierd collisions where blocks will randomly break for no reason.
Just some simple fixes and a few new building blocks and food items, would bring this game out from the pit of neglect its currently in. and its sad to see it die off without support. F to pay respects.

It's functional as it is, but needs a lot of QoL fixes. A lot of things are behind layers of menus, key press and navigation.
Survival mode is a chore, creative mode is fun enough. Probably the only redeeming feature is the physics, which admittedly is intent on violently murdering you.
Currently (2021) there are many other open world survival/building games you could have more fun in.

There are only a few developers that I truly despise and will never purchase games from again. Keen is one of them. This developer is scum. This was released into early access and marketed as a game (it still is in the description) and was lucky to receive an update once a year. They've taken this out of early access now (nothing changed, they just say it's not a beta anymore) and stated it will no longer be worked on. On top of that, these developers have the audacity to say that this was essentially a test for their game engine. They sold a tech demo that was misleadingly called a game, lied about updates, then shut the game down with an insulting message to players. Don't buy this or anything else from this developer. On top of all of this, NO WHERE on this store page does Keen state that this is no longer receiving updates. This should be removed from Steam.

This review isn't really targeted towards the game itself, but to Keen themselves for letting us down and giving the middle finger to all of us by giving up on one of the greatest games they made for one that already has so much to it already. I only hope one day they will turn around and redeem themselves by bringing this back or even starting a new project that brings the best of both games into one and only then will they gain respect. Until that day comes, if it ever does, they don't deserve my respect and neither they should yours.
Good night sweet prince...

TL;DR: If you like slowly building things that end up looking really good, and/or if you enjoy games that test your patience, you will most likely enjoy this game.
There's no good reason to do anything in the game. It has a grand (but buggy) physics engine with which you have a lot of freedom for siege engines and the like, and that's great, but it doesn't give any reason whatsoever, either in creative or survival, to build them. None. Nope. No such thing as motivation with this game. It feels like a shell of what could be a brilliant game that has been abandoned without consideration of what could have been.
To compare it with a rather revolutionary game like Minecraft; it's as if every liquid, every explosive, every potion, every movement enhancer (like minecarts, horses, elytra, etc.), and almost every single creature was removed from the game entirely. And also, any rare ores got placed at the surface, with no reason to dig farther than 6 meters underground.
The store description makes it out to be a grand game full of excitement and possibilities and inspiration, but then the game itself is bland. That's the best way I can describe it, bland.
And now for the fun parts of the game, though few;
It feels great to make a machine that actually works. Making a trebuchet feels like a big accomplishment, as you have to assemble it with the parts the game provides, which allows for a whole lot of customization;
You want it to launch 3 large stones a shorter distance? You can very easily do that!
You want to put it on wheels? You can do that!
You want to launch a regular catapult with a trebuchet? You can probably do that! Physics might get buggy, though.
The large-scale building also allows for a lot of customization. Believe it or not, it even has machicolations!
You can also remove any chunk of terrain! You could flatten the peak of a mountain if you really wanted!
To give a numerical rating: 2/10 for an action/adventure/survival game, but an 8/10 for a sandbox building game. (Of course, the negative review is based on my game preferences, you may enjoy it far more than I do! But you may also hate it far more than I do. I personally am perplexed on what to think of this game)

The reason for the lack of hope on it is due to the main developing team pulling focus from Medieval Engineers to their other game Space Engineers. This means that there will be very few if any updates and most of which will only be bug fixes. Even though it was enjoyable, it is not at what I can comfortably say that it is a complete and good game to pay for and play. I wish it could have gotten more attention but sadly it did not.

KSH decided to abandon this game in favour of Space Engineers which they are now milking with premium DLC content previously available for free as mods, yet Medieval Engineers got arguably tonnes more potential and is because of the very basic physics engine far more stable than SE, which breaks very often.

But I'm still playing, so take all of that with a grain of salt. Some interesting bugs pop up, like grid misalignment mid-game causing newly placed blocks to explode, or not being able to sprint or jump (key aspects of staying alive). And then there are the killer branches when chopping trees.
The game mechanics don't seem to be finished, either. Are all blocks structurally load bearing and only capable of supporting light loads? Can you suspend an 8-block chain of stone cubes in space from a single voxel-anchored block, and have the exact same limitation for a stick fence?
What about the rather uninformative tutorial that never teaches you how to deal with hunger, stamina, or health? Or the incomplete and very clunky progression system? Or the rope drum that you can't interact with (other than to push it around)? And whatever are schematics for? Is there something I missed that would allow you to read them, or are they just useless vestiges of the obsolete research system?

Medieval Engineers, or at least my time spent with it, Was a blast, I had a lot of fun with my friends. That being said there are a few bugs we encountered. Especially the world smashing us at times because of glitchy hitboxes but it didn't happen all too much honestly and we still had a great time. We've had a world ongoing for almost 25 hours of playtime (With me only being in it for the past 15) and there is STILL more to do, more to see, lots to explore. I love the random structures. The game is NOT dead , we had a fairly substantial update in June 2020 and the update history is sparse at best, but updates have and do keep coming to those who are patient. Right now this game is a perfectly wonderful time -when played with friends- the combat is pretty rough at first but you get used to it and end up enjoying it after a bit.
That all being said, and as you can see in the trailers. This is not a game you play alone, -can you- play singleplayer? Yes, but its just. ungodly. There is so much to do and it all takes so much time to do it that it just becomes and absolute slug through the dirt and with no way to edit those things on world set up you will pretty much be praying to you medieval gods for automation as it stays just outside your reach for what feels like an eternity, if that is your thing then more power to you. But seriously, grab some friends and come play Medieval Engineers, it's a wonderful game to enjoy with others.
OVERALL SCORE:
Core Game 4/5 - There is work to be done but its still a lot of fun as is!
Singleplayer 1/5 - Never again will i wait that long.
Multiplayer 5/5 - I'm about to go play with my friends right now!

I'm not entirely sure how I ended up with so many ours on this game. It was enjoyable for the most part. Continually dying and being spawned as far away as possible got old fast though. I feel like I spent most of my time running back to where died/settled. The Viking/enemy mechanics were very unsatisfying. They spawned out of nowhere, with no settlements or camps to destroy or avoid. The building/engineering was intriguing. There's plenty of inspiration from other playing, but I found myself struggling to create anything useful that actually functioned.
If you're an engineer - Recommended!
Everyone else - Nope. There's far better building games available for the casual tinkerer like myself.

TL;DR: Keen up and abandoned this game for what seems like profiteering on another game and that alone, leaving Medieval Engineers half-done at best, and full of bugs.
Keen, if your track record with Miner Wars is anything to go by, this is not good for you, not as a business nor anything else. If you're going to make games, and then release them half-done and full of bugs, then people aren't going to want to buy from you anymore.

As others have said:
Poor game got abandoned by Keen Software, who after promising big changes, abandoned this game, retroactively saying they planned to from around when they announced they would add the stuff.
Then they proceeded to slice the price for this game, making a fool out of anyone who like me, expected a full game eventually.
This game is only a bare-bones framework for a game, plus buying it encourages shitty, scummy, deceitful, business practices.

Medieval Engineers was a second-rate ground-based version of Space Engineers, developed as a side-by-side before they introduced planets into Space Engineers. This was your side of hashbrowns, sold separately, before hashbrowns came with the main course.
Everything that happens with Space Engineers is tied directly to this game, and you can see that Keen has decided to abandon this - just like they've abandoned developmental good will in Space Engineers. To put it simply, they have gotten greedy.
Keen Software House got lucky with one concept - that concept is Space Engineers. Needless to say, take one minute to look what they've decided to do with all continuing updates and additions to that game - new blocks are now locked behind a paywall. These are parts that add functionality, improve the game, and continue development. Instead of continuing to support the people that were there for them through good and bad (and when I say bad, it was unplayable because of planets and multiplayer issues for a very long time), they've decided to exploit the customers as cattle to fill their glass.
This game existed purely because they wanted to experiment with planets. This game never had the potential to be anything like Space Engineers, because Space Engineers is the only game that Keen has had the talent to create. They've run this one into the ground, it's only a matter of time before they run Space Engineers into the ground too unless the community decides to step up and say something.

Yes, this is a $10 dollar tech demo.
Yes, it is abandoned.
Yes, NEARLY EVERYONE can see it had huge potential.
No, this is not the first game KSH dropped the ball on.
No, I am not supporting them anymore.
Yes, KSH was extremely arrogant.
That's why they put all of their energy behind SE, because its their only breakthrough. The newest project (THIS ONE) is doomed because they thought they could make a SE 2 and have double the revenue. Except that they stopped caring because it wasn't 200% intake or some BS corp reasoning. This is EA levels of idiocy here.
If you have some brains, don't fund such a poorly managed company. No offense to the hard workers who put this project together and functioning. But your bosses are not 'very good'.

I used to be one of the biggest supporters of KSH.
I used to buy Space Engineers and Medieval Engineers for friends. I would stream and do community outreach on Twitch, Youtube, and Reddit. I built communities, and ran servers. I was a big supporter.
I bought into Space Engineers when it was a blip on the radar, and thought it seemed cool. I wanted to see the game progress and became a very, very, very early adopter. I later found out that Marek Rosa, and Keen Software House as an extension, had a habit of taking money from one project, and starting another, and abandoning older games.
At first I thought it was new developers, growing pains, etc. I thought it was scummy, but was hopeful. They were communicating with Space Engineers, updating it frequently, went in directions we the playerbase didn't think possible, and their programmers too. Medieval Engineers was announced, and again the reminders that Marek Rosa likes to start projects and take money to new projects swirled around. I was concerned, but they did good by Space Engineers. After releasing Medieval Engineers, both games became stagnant, and they said they would update Space Engineers less frequently. In the end, they started making more content so I bought into Medieval Engineers.
They since have reverted many changes (how compound blocks work) released a patch that went completly tone-deaf breaking the game. They then release this half assed patch saying they repaired game-breaking issues (remains to be seen at time of writing this post (17/03/2020) ). Then basically declare it abandonware, which is still purchasable on steam.
This, when the money that went into this game did not go to the team working on this, did not really go to the team working on space engineers. All the cross-game developments that were supposed to occur (and promised) never came to fruition. No compound blocks or detailed planets on SE. No real content in ME. All while Marek brags about his A.I. project.
I no longer suppor this game, and believe no one should support ME, SE, or KSH. Especially not the snake oilsman Marek.
